The Commissioner is also responsible for investigating applications by

refugees to allow family members to enter and reside in the state and for reporting to the Minister on such applications. Its principal function is to advise the Minister for Justice and Equality in relation to the administration of longterm prison sentences (sentences of eight years of more). The Board advises the Minister of the prisoner’s progress to date, the degree to which he/she has engaged with the various therapeutic services and how best to proceed with the future administration of the sentence.
