Editor’s Note

, Welcome to the 2017 Mental Health Awards A single lifetime can result in many mental health experiences caused by biological issues, life experiences or even a family history of disorders. The emotional, psychological, and social wellbeing of individuals is just as important as their physical fitness, and these unseen problems can be difficult to live with, both for the affected and their loved ones, so it is the delicate job of mental health professionals and services to diagnose, treat and care for those who find their day-to-day lives disrupted or altered.

Clinical Psychiatrist of the Year 2017 – Tokushima Prefecture Yasuhiro Kaneda is a Chair of the Board of Directors, Iwaki Clinic, Anan City, located in the southern part of Tokushima Prefecture, Japan. We profiled Yasuhiro and invited him to tell us more about the clinic, discussing what makes it successful. Since its founding in 1999, Iwaki Clinic has been serving as a general Clinic, including psychiatry, internal medicine, and surgery, providing support for both mind and body of the citizens. Yasuhiro outlined the services the clinic provides, as well as how the staff works. “Alongside usual practice services, at Iwaki Clinic we provide special outpatient department for Dementia (practice by a dementia specialist, utilizing examinations of neuroimaging and neurocognitive function) and Diabetes (practice by a diabetologist). Also, we have Home Support Center for consultation such as the nursing care insurance/care service, and Medical Examination Center which provides a great variety of medical examination menus individually by our openhearted staff. Furthermore, we provide day-care for people with authorization requiring support or nursing care, and child-care for sick and convalescent children, and thus we can cope from children to the elderly. Now, we are preparing for group-home.”

4 GHP / September 2017

Yasuhiro received his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Tokushima, School of Medicine, Tokushima, Japan. He has been committed to a career in research, teaching, and clinical work with a major focus on psychiatry including depression, schizophrenia, and dementia. Prior to this, he was chief psychiatrist of in- and out-patient care at Tokushima University Hospital. He is a designated psychiatrist certified by Japanese Society of Psychiatry and Neurology, and a specialist physician certified by Japanese Psychogeriatric Society, Japanese Society of Clinical Neuropsychopharmacology, and Japan Medical Association. Yasuhiro details to us the projects that the practice has focused on, emphasizing the clinic’s overall mission. “The clinic extensively has focused on neurocognitive assessment using the Brief Assessment of Cognition in Schizophrenia (BACS) and Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale-cognitive subscale (ADAS-cog), because of the extensive evidence that cognitive impairment is a core feature of the diseases, as well as a

key determinant of functional outcome. Regarding the BACS, we developed the Japaneselanguage version (Japanese BACS), and now it has been adopted in the majority of the Psychiatric Departments of medical schools in Japan. “Ultimately, I would like to emphasize that Iwaki Clinic contributes the health maintenance and promotion for both mind and body of the citizens, without distinction of

age, living in the southern part of Tokushima.”

Best for Business-focused Mental Health Services – UK & Excellence Award in Business Training Courses: Time Mastery Monkey Puzzle Training and Consultancy was founded by Karen Meager and John McLachlan in 2007. We spoke to Karen to find out what makes the firm successful and what the future holds for the company.

Monkey Puzzle was born out of the co-founders’ desire to help businesses maximise the skills and talents of their people and grow their businesses at the same time. The aim was to blend their extensive business experience in retail and financial services with a deep understanding of people. To achieve this both John and Karen undertook training in a range of psychologies. John is a qualified Clinical Hypnotherapist and Karen is a UKCP registered Psychotherapist. Karen discusses the services the firm offers and the types of clients the company deals with. “The focus of our work is in businesses where the leaders are professional or technical experts who also require the skills to run their business and lead people. Examples include tech companies, financial services, architects, lawyers, accountants, marketing and also the creative industries. Our aim is to make personal and

6 GHP / September 2017

professional growth real, useful and practical through a blend of training, one to one work and business strategy events.” Detailing the company’s specific focus, Karen talks us through the business plan as well as how herself and John lean on their previous experience to help staff at the company thrive in their respective positions, giving the best value for clients. “Businesses can be both successful and healthy, though all too often businesses overly focus on one or the other, either very commercially focused or very focused on wellbeing. We believe with the right skills and strategic plans and processes you can have both and take a holistic approach with the businesses we work with. The focus of our work is in supporting organisations to develop key people in the business, training employees on essential self-care and relational skills and becoming more effective and efficient with their time thereby achieving more and reducing stress.

“In our previous business roles, we saw a lot of people becoming commercially successful at the sacrifice of their health and too many talented people crash and burn along the way. The problem was increasing and we believed that it didn’t have to be this way. We also saw that mental health and emotional resilience were often ‘treated’ if they became an issue through EAP schemes and sporadic training initiatives. Whilst well intentioned, these approaches never got to the heart of things, partly because mental health still carried so much stigma in the workplace. We wanted to change this and identified processes where we integrate positive mental health skills into everything we delivered. “The approach of staff includes teaching people to work on their emotional regulation as part of a leadership development programme, rather than developing a specific course or how, by using their time better, they will be calmer, more focused, and more efficient.

For our clients, this approach shifted the perception of mental health from something that was a problem that needed to be dealt with to something people could develop and work on much like they would for their physical health through diet and exercise.” With regard to the company’s ongoing success, Karen is obviously excited about what the future has in store for the firm. She discusses how the firm want to develop more with other health professionals as well as maintaining the commercial success of the company. “Looking ahead, we are really excited to be working with some organisations right now who have big plans that will impact the pace of social change which we are also passionate about. We are enjoying helping some super bright people achieve great things by supporting them to develop themselves and their mental and emotional resilience. We also want to develop more with other health professionals

to help businesses care for their employees holistically whilst maintaining their commercial success. In the mental health industry, there are always advances and developments which Monkey Puzzle will have to adapt around. Always learning, Karen points out

that the company are introducing more and more technology into their company as this will become a much bigger part of mental health in the future. “Ultimately, we are all on a big technology learning curve right now because we think this will become a much bigger part of

the mental health space going forward. Working with some therapeutic organisations we are looking at how we can harness tech advancements whilst maintaining aspects like confidentiality and the all important human touch.

Mental Health Psychologist of the Year 2017 – UK & Best CBT Practice - UK My Private Therapy Clinic is a unique mental health practice based in London. We invited award-winning Consultant Clinical Psychologist Dr Patapia Tzotzoli to tell us more about the clinic and the work she undertakes there. My Private Therapy Clinic focuses on providing a relaxed friendly atmosphere for either short- or long-term therapeutic sessions. Patapia enjoys a reputation of warmth and informality in her professional work, while achieving effective outcomes for her clients. She draws knowledge from different therapeutic frameworks to offer bespoke treatment to her clients. “The focus of my work is on adolescents, adults, and couples. I specialise in assisting people to overcome difficulties, to work towards optimal personal effectiveness, and to improve their overall quality of life. I am particularly interested in difficulties that stem from relationships (with self or others), work or studying, and physical health. I love working with business professionals, highly successful executives, and students, as well as medical patients alongside their families or caregivers.” Applying her specialisation in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Patapia tailors each intervention to an individual

8 GHP / September 2017

client by complementing this with techniques from other approaches, such as mindfulness, motivational interviewing, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT), and schema therapy. Her expertise in neuropsychology provides her with a valuable additional method of assessment and the ability to offer specialist advice where cognitive weaknesses, such as memory and attentional difficulties, trouble individuals in their everyday life. Patapia discusses how she and her team work to ensure that every client receives the treatment they need. “Our vision to create an environment where clients are at the heart of psychological services has come to life with My Private Therapy Clinic. Their care here is personal and comprehensive. Always evidence-based, we develop tailor-made therapeutic plans for clients by considering the difficulties they are currently experiencing alongside any personal, work-related or social factors.

To ensure we meet the exact needs of everyone we treat, where appropriate we liaise with consultants from other specialties (e.g., personal trainers, psychiatrists, neurologists, lawyers, osteopaths, etc.) to ensure a holistic approach to clients’ care. We provide therapy in context resulting in more effective outcomes for our clients.” Alongside her work at the clinic, Patapia is the CEO and founder of iConcipio Ltd, and she is interested in developing support systems using web-based technologies to promote personal effectiveness. She began with MePlusMe, an online system designed for students in higher education to address their mental health and study skill needs. Looking ahead, Patapia plans to later adopt this for business corporations. As part of this work, she is actively involved in the research and development of the system, as well as fundraising and funds management, strategic business development, marketing, and leading a team of 15 people at different levels of seniority and specialties. As a result of this project, she was

the recipient of the Lion’s Den award in entrepreneurship from King’s College London in 2011 and was shortlisted from over 2,400 applicants to participate in the Falling Walls Lab 2016 competition in Berlin. At present, she is partnering with University of West London to carry out a feasibility study prior to fully developing and rolling out the system. The ongoing aim is to show that MePlusMe can alleviate at least some of the pressure that universities student support services face at present due to high demand. This is particularly vital, given the increasing focus on technology in mental health care, and as such My Private Therapy Clinic’s ongoing aim will be to provide clients with flexible solutions that help them to recover and fit around their lifestyle, as Patapia concludes: “Looking to the future, e-health is likely to become the number one offering. Therapy delivery will massively depend on technology. As such, therapists should be able to adapt their skills and be comfortable around technology, and clients will need to take control of and responsibility for

™

their own mental health. Our clinic already offers services that incorporate technology, and is pioneering in persistently incorporating them among our other offerings, while helping clients feel comfortable and confident within this setting. We aim to offer all this alongside an always accessible and personal contact with clients.

Excellence Award for Staff Wellbeing Initiatives Mary Prendergast, Director of Nursing at St. Patrick’s Hospital, designed, developed, applied and facilitated a programme for restoration and wellbeing of staff in busy services. We spoke to Mary and profiled the hospital to try and find out more about herself and the programme and she helped to design. The award winning restoration programme at St. Patrick’s Hospital falls in line with the policy on the retention of staff in the HSE evaluation process. The programme is completed and highly rated by and for supporting staff, and it is now likely it will be implemented by ONMSD and HSE as a mechanism to keep staff healthy, both mentally and physically. This will contribute to the retention of staff in the healthcare services whilst also ensuring their wellbeing, and this is considered to be progression in the advancement of aims to support and nurture staff. Mary details the programme and outlines what the overall aim is. “Fundamentally, I run a programme of restoration for staff called the Steps of Restoration one day- Day 1. The programme is a mindfulness based practice of self-care and wellbeing, which outlines the science of how stress can affect all kinds of people and why people’s bodies respond differently when under constant stress of any kind. It offers and provides techniques that may help staff in their professional and private lives, based on a coaching model and on a human given theory of how emotional needs are met and if they are not being met, what happens.

10 GHP / September 2017

“The aim of the programme is to provide support to nurses, midwives and care staff, enabling them to feel grounded in their own wisdom, whilst also exploring their innate capacity to feel deeply and understand their values and beliefs. Staff need to be able to think clearly and act with integrity, demonstrating a high quality of standards and care. The programme will also help people to understand emotional intelligence and learn mechanisms or tools which can support them in challenging situations.” After day one of the programme, Mary explains how she offers the opportunity to staff of continuing the programme through conscious caring, which comes about through collaboration, peace and leadership, on days two, three and four respectively. “Basically, the aim of our programme is to enable nurses, midwives and healthcare staff to develop a range of strategies and techniques to tackle a stressful, busy working environment and build capacity to facilitate appreciative enquiry, commitment and contentment in the work place. Staff should also be able to feel grounded in their own professional and personal wisdom, while exploring their innate capacity to feel deeply and understand their values

and believes, think clearly and act with integrity to demonstrate high quality and standards of professional care and behaviour in relation to the values of care, compassion, trust and learning.” Regarding the hospital’s overall mission statement, the company aims to help the people it serves, maximising their health and social wellbeing, using the resources at our disposal as effectively and efficiently as it can. The hospital has a vision of providing patient centred care, which is a shared decision, ultimately aiding residents, families and carers settle into a homely setting where each person’s uniqueness and the right of choice is valued. The hospital achieves this vision by being open to new ideas and ways of working, demonstrating a commitment to effective communication and teamwork and developing practice to reflect its shared vision with its residents. The hospital manages its resources, staffing levels and skill mix, continuing professional development with the careful management of its ageing care environment. Fundamentally, St. Patrick’s aim of care reflects its philosophy and person centred vision in that all continuing care wards provide a safe, caring and

clean environment in which all of residents receive the utmost standard of quality care that they require and deserve. Continuing to be positive, the hospital’s philosophy is to embrace positive ageing and place the elderly person at the centre of all our decisions in relation to the provision of the residential service. It acts as the residents advocate and provides a forum for residents to take an active role in relation to decisions of the service, appreciating any sort of feedback. The team promote independence, health and well-being and aim to provide a safe therapeutic environment where privacy, dignity and confidentiality are respected. With empathy, kindness and a holistic approach, staff address physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of the residents. At the hospital, employees encourage individual choice and active participation in care related decisions based on effective communication and information exchange. Involvement of family and friends enrich care and contribute to a happy homely atmosphere. Ultimately, St. Patrick’s Hospital recognises the expertise and valuable contribution of all staff and the importance of team

working. The team and its staff strive for excellence and ongoing learning and development inform its high standards of care. Research and audit are used to validate and improve practice.
