In 2008 the Animal Humane Society served as an invaluable community resource, providing care and services for 37,622 animals of which 34,752 were companion animals and 2,910 were wildlife. This effort requires a true partnership between AHS and the community.

You have been a valued partner in a community that has stepped up to adopt, share financial resources, work and volunteer, use our pet training and boarding services, and ultimately advocate on behalf of animals and the human-animal bond.

Together we are finding homes for animals, working to reduce the number of animals that are orphaned and need a second chance and, most importantly, working toward reducing euthanasia of healthy and treatable animals. This is the core of what we do. Because of you, the Animal Humane Society is a resource for all the stages of an animal’s life–nurturing bonds and keeping pets in their homes for life.

escue on the road

When animals needed help in Cedar Rapids, Iowa after the floods in July of 2008, AHS was there to assist. Our team helped to care for the more than 600 displaced animals. On a second trip to Iowa, our team returned with some of the animals that had not been reclaimed by their owners. Thirty-six found new homes with AHS adopters.

Two months later we dispatched a team to Texas to help with the rescue efforts after Hurricane Ike. Our team cared for injured wildlife and pledged to return to help 118 dogs that were displaced. We transported 59 dogs and enlisted the support of Northwest Airlines who helped bring an additional 59 dogs to safety at AHS locations.

Animal Humane Society is an open admission facility. Although we do not turn animals away based on space, temperament, health, age or physical characteristics, we believe we have a responsibility to ensure that animals being adopted are good citizens. We do not impose a time limit on available animals at our adoption centers. As long as the animal remains in good health and temperament, it is available until it is adopted.

hat a pet and owner need

We’re committed to helping people keep animals in their homes and helping pet owners overcome challenges.

We designed and developed our behavior and training programs based on the information we heard from people who needed to surrender their animals—and built a program that helps pet owners create a lasting relationship with their pets. More than 40 classes and socialization opportunities were offered weekly including Levels classes, small dog and shy dog playgroups, puppy training, therapy dog training and tricks and games. Renowned training and behavioral expert Tamar Gellar has called our program among the best in the country.

ducating today for tomorrow

Humane education is about social responsibility, making educated choices, and nurturing a reverence for life.

We believe humane education is critical to teaching compassion and making the world a better place for people and animals. That is why education is such an important part of our work at AHS. Our in-school class programs focus on topics such as pet responsibility, animal classification, urban wildlife, endangered species, and animal communication and bite prevention. Last year, 11,398 students received these programs. In addition, 279 young people learned about life inside an animal welfare organization through Unleashed, AHS’s summer camp program.

AHS provided homes and second chances for 19,064 dogs, cats and domestic critters.

AHS is an open admission organization with a strong belief in providing services for all people and animals in need. Sadly, many animals come to us who we cannot safely and responsibly place in homes. In addition, there are many more animals surrendered by the community than there is capacity for rehoming in the community.

In 2008, AHS staff made the difficult and heart-wrenching decision to euthanize 12,330 animals. In addition, people sought our services for end-of-life euthanasia for 2,953 animals in place of private veterinary services.

Wildlife In addition to domestic animals, AHS operates a wildlife rescue program. Through our partnership with Wildlife Rehabilitation and Release, animals are treated and released back to the wild after rehabilitation. In 2008, 2,910 wild animals received services through this program.

The Minnesota Charities Review Council’s Standards of Accountability state that at least 70% of an organization’s annual expenses should be for program activity with not more than 30% for management, general and fundraising expenses combined. In 2008, the Animal Humane Society exceeded this standard by directing 74% of our expense back into programming for the animals and our community.

Population served: Animal Humane Society serves pets and the public from its facilities in Anoka, Hennepin, Ramsey, Washington and Wright Counties. The Humane Investigations unit provides services throughout Minnesota and western Wisconsin. AHS is a founding member of the Minnesota Partnership for Animal Welfare (MnPAW), a coalition of animal welfare organizations in Minnesota. AHS has partnerships with more than 60 animal welfare organizations in Minnesota, the University of Minnesota Veterinary School, animal rescues in Indiana, Ohio, Oklahoma, Georgia and Iowa and municipal animal control authorities throughout Minnesota and western Wisconsin.
