Farming machinery and techniques to launch at Notts event

Local farmers are looking forward to the return of a popular machinery show where new products, machinery and technology are set to be unveiled The Midlands Machinery Show takes place on Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 November at Newark Showground, Nottinghamshire.

exhibited at the event since it was set up four years ago and says it has reaped dividends for the firm, which manufactures specialist spraying equipment.

Around 200 agricultural businesses are exhibiting at the event – organised by the Newark and Nottinghamshire Agricultural Society - which will not only give them the opportunity to discuss advances in their products and services, but also allow farmers to discover how such techniques can help to improve the productivity of their land.

He said: “Midlands Machinery Show is an ideal opportunity for farmers and agricultural businesses to congregate and discuss how the farming industry is faring across the country.

Joe Allen from Gainsboroughbased Chafer Machinery has

“They really benefit from meeting others within their community, seeing new technology and actually being able to spend time talking to other exhibitors about how their machinery and products can benefit their farms.”

George Taylor, Midlands Machinery Show manager said: “Technology is advancing at a fast rate within the agricultural industry, and it is really important farmers invest their time in attending events, such as the Midlands Machinery Show, to determine how this can be used to improve productivity and efficiency.” As well as new technology being showcased, soil health and drones which can help improve precision farming.are being discussed as part of a series of expert seminars by crop precisionist Hutchinsons.

John Deere: Expands Gator range

Offering the company’s quietest ever cab, more room for both driver and passengers and an extremely efficient heating system cargo box has a load capacity of 454kg, while towing capacity has been increased by a third to 907kg and total payload capacity is 680kg.

John Deere’s new full-size Gator utility vehicles are designed to maximise yearround productivity and comfort. Available from UK and Irish dealers in early 2018, the brand new petrol XUV 835M and diesel XUV 865M models are being preceded this autumn by the restyled HPX 815E, XUV 560E and XUV 590M Gators, which feature new model numbers and several specification updates. The 54hp XUV 835M and 23hp 865M offer power steering, a CVT transmission and a top speed of 37 or 31mph (60 or 50kph) respectively, plus a tight turning circle and optimal weight distribution for superior off-road Smithfield Tractors Llanelwedd, Builth Wells Powys, LD2 3SR t: 01982 553221 www.smithfieldtractors.co.uk

performance. For extra versatility, these Gators can be fitted with a wide range of over 90 attachments from snow blades to winches, and feature a large 42-litre fuel tank to keep the vehicle running longer between fillups. The spacious, pressurised cab can accommodate three people, for off-road use only. This new cab incorporates noise isolation and sound dampening components, making it the quietest yet available on the Gator range. It also offers year-round weather protection and the heating system includes a windscreen defrost feature. Both these new, sleekly styled XUV Gator models feature ample legroom and a tiltable steering wheel to help reduce driver fatigue during long working days. The versatile and durable

The diesel powered HPX 815E Gator utility vehicle shares its new styling with the XUV 855M model, which replaces the 855D. The 815E’s updated cargo box also has a load capacity of 454kg and both the sides and the tailgate, which has a pick-up style onehanded latch, can be easily removed to provide a flatbedstyle load bay if required. The durable composite construction of this industry leading cargo box makes it dent, rattle and rust-resistant. Additional changes to this model include a new digital dashboard, powerful LED headlights and a restyled front bumper, to improve handling and operation particularly in challenging terrain. The XUV 560E (non-power steering) and XUV 590M (with power steering) Gator models both have petrol engines and now feature LED headlights as standard and an instrument cluster for easier operation. The new styling includes alloy wheels, which allow the suspension to follow ground contours more closely and thus improve grip. A seat belt interlock system provides a safer drive, by restricting the machines’ speed to 8mph (13kph) if the seat belt is not done up.

Case IH supports future of farming through youth agricultural summit

Case IH is underlining its commitment to the future of farming and the people who will lead it by supporting and participating in the Youth Agricultural Summit, taking place from October 9 to 12 in Brussels, Belgium. Organized by Bayer, together with the two Belgian young farmers associations Groene Kring (GK) and Fédération des Jeunes Agriculteurs (FJA), the summit aims to address the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end hunger, achieve food security, and promote sustainable agriculture. The event will see 100 young leaders aged 18-25 from 49 countries come together to collaborate, share perspectives and find answers to the question ‘How do we feed a hungry planet?’. The long-term goal of the summit is to connect and inspire the next generation of young leaders in 6 | Agri News

agriculture to not just think, but to act and become global instruments of change. Outcomes of the 2015 Summit were tabled at the UN 42nd Committee on Food Security in Rome and each delegate developed individual actions to implement in their local communities. As part of its commitment to the future of farming, Case IH had a stand at the event, where attendees had the opportunity to discuss developments in advanced agricultural technology, with a particular focus on precision farming and other new technologies increasingly being adopted in the industry, such as the use of drones.

Mark 3 REV V drone creates high-resolution 1.6cm-perpixel images which can be ‘stitched’ together to enable full field analysis, and the data from this can then be used to make variable fertiliser and spray applications.” “Not only ca n this technology be applied to combinable crops, but it is also relevant to roots such as potatoes. Higher yields and reduced seed costs can more than recouped from the investment in the technology, which can be used to measure the variance in light reflection from leaves, indicating crop fertiliser requirements and disease levels.”

The National Sprayer Testing Scheme Ian Foreman - NSTS manager

Offering the company’s quietest ever cab, more room for both driver and passengers and an extremely efficient heating system The National Sprayer Testing Scheme (NSTS) is now in its 10th year of providing a standardised procedure for testing sprayers in the UK. A recent update to the test procedure has been the implementation of the new test standard EN ISO 16122 in February this year which includes some additional test items. As well as checks for safe emptying of the tank and removal of the filters, it also includes 2 checks on electronic controllers. This confirms the flow in l/ min compared against the nozzle output checks already being done. The second is checking speed over a measured 100m distance. Although the NSTS test does not include a calibration of the sprayer, these additional Andrew Lovegreen

checks will assist the operator when he carries out calibrations, as required by Crop Assurance but also best practice throughout the season. Although the largest number of tests carried out by NSTS examiners are crop sprayers, since the implementation of the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD) in November 2016, this now includes all types of pesticide application equipment except for knapsack, handheld and pedestrian applicators. Therefore, anyone applying granules such as nematicides and Avadex and slug pellets, these machines all now must be tested. There are different timescales depending on the size and type of equipment and variances within Crop Assurance and other

schemes so please check with your scheme provider or check the NSTS website, www.nsts.org.uk for further information. The most common fault found on sprayers at the time of test is filters. As well as checking they are clean and undamaged they also need to be compatible with the nozzles fitted. Second are leaks and drips. Machine examiners will check the sprayer for leaks, both static and at a higher working pressure when used in the field. The aim here is to try and force a problem that may be starting, such as a hose deteriorating, and find it in a more controlled situation rather than in the field which may cause additional risk to either the operator or the environment.Other test items

Farmer airlifted to hospital after legs become trapped in machinery

The North Yorkshire farmer had to be airlifted to hospital following the accident involving farm machinery where his legs became trapped in equipment.

A North Yorkshire farmer had to be airlifted to hospital following a farm machinery accident where his legs became trapped in the equipment. The man had to be be cut free from the farm machinery in Staxton on

Saturday night (28 October) after his legs became trapped.

Figures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have revealed that in 2016/17, agriculture had the highest rate of fatal injury, around 18 times higher than the all Industry rate.

Fire crews from Scarborough, Filey and Malton attended the incident at

Poorly used or faulty vehicles and machinery are the biggest cause of death and injury on farms.

just before 8pm . The crews used hydraulic cutting equipment and small tools to release him from the machinery, he was then transported to Hull Royal Infirmary by Air Ambulance.

Farmers come into contact with a host of machinery daily – combines, choppers and hay balers which bring their own attendant dangers. According to Martin Malone from the Farm Safety Partnership: “Machinery and transport continue to be the main causes of life changing and life ending injuries on farms.

The Air Ambulance Service Mission critical. Saving lives

Our lifesaving missions are funded by your generous donations. We do not receive any government funding.

Emma’s story It was early August 2009 when Emma took a drive that would change her life completely. Emma was driving down a country lane when she was involved in a horrific collision. Emma’s car, a small Ford Ka, collided head on with the supermarket delivery van. She suffered appalling injuries including a broken elbow, ribs, jaw, pelvis and femurs, as well as a punctured lung and crushed spleen. Her injuries were life threatening. Within minutes our helicopter was at the scene. Our crew sedated Emma before airlifting her to hospital for further treatment. Thankfully Emma went onto make a full recovery. She now raises funds for the service that helped save her life. “If the air ambulance didn’t exist, then I’m sure I wouldn’t have survived. I believe it was their speed and medical skills that saved my life.” Emma Lockton

Farm safety training rolled out to tackle Scotland’s farm death toll

Last year there were five fatal accidents in Scotland and many more accidents caused serious and life-changing injuries. Farming continues to be one of the most hazardous occupations in the UK however award-winning charity, the Farm Safety Foundation has been working closely with Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) to encourage students studying landbased and agricultural courses in Scotland to think about safety in the hope that the number of accidents, whether major or minor, decrease and lives are saved. The Introduction to Farm Safety course, run by the Farm Safety Foundation, aims to raise awareness of the risks and hazards farmers face every day in the workplace and challenge and change the attitudes to risk taking so that the next generation of farmers will take good behaviours into the industry. Last year there were five fatal accidents in Scotland and many more accidents caused serious and life-changing injuries. The Farm Safety Foundation worked with lecturers at SRUC to tailor their unique course to meet their students’ needs and recreated four CSI-style farm accident scenes. Small groups of students spent approximately 20 minutes at each scenario, which were set up at the college’s farm location to provide a realistic setting. This approach enabled students to work out what may have happened at each “accident scene”, decide what immediate action

12 | Agri News

should be taken, contemplate First Aid implications and explore what measures should be taken to prevent the accident happening in the future. The Farm Safety Foundation charity was established by rural insurers NFU Mutual in 2014 to raise awareness of farm safety among young farmers, challenge and change their attitudes towards farming safely and reduce the toll of injuries and fatalities which bring heartbreak and misery to farming families and rural communities every year. Martin Malone, Manager for NFU Mutual in Scotland, said: “We insure most farmers in Scotland and we're determined to do all we can to reduce the toll of deaths and serious injuries resulting from farm accidents. “NFU Mutual set up the Farm Safety Foundation three years ago to deliver practical help – and especially training – to help tomorrow’s generation of farmers and crofters develop a safe working mind set at the beginning of their careers. “It’s great to see that SRUC have signed up to receive the Farm Safety Foundation’s course. The training programme demonstrates the need to put safety first at all times when working on a farm – and the risks of becoming complacent when working with large machinery and livestock on a daily basis.

“However, it’s clear from the latest farm accident figures that there’s a lot more work to be done to help farmers of all ages work safely and for this reason we’re calling for other organisations involved with farming to help finance the Farm Safety Foundation so it can expand its farm safety programme.” Graeme Ligertwood, Chair of the Education Division Health & Safety Committee at SRUC, said: “Working with the Farm Safety Foundation, we are determined to reduce the number of accidents taking place on Scottish farms by providing practical, hard-hitting training that instils a deep understanding of the need to safe working which will stay with students throughout their careers. “As technology advances within farming, the risk of accidents can actually increase. While the safety of machinery and equipment has improved, the fact that machines can do so much more can make people complacent. “It’s fantastic to have an outside organisation like the Farm Safety Foundation come in right at the start of the student journey to help us emphasise the importance the college places on farm safety and for our students to face scenarios they could come across on their own farms when they go home or in their future workplace.”

John Deere has named Europe’s top self-propelled forage harvester drivers for 2017 in a unique social media campaign. Contractor Simon Burton of D & B Farming at Leasingham, near Sleaford in Lincolnshire will be featured at the end of October as the UK & Ireland’s Chopping Pro on a mobile billboard in his local area. Simon’s success follows that of his brother and codirector James Burton, who was one of two representatives from the UK & Ireland at this summer’s John Deere & 16 | Agri News

Michelin European Drivers’ Championship in France, where he was placed 4th out of 16 tractor drivers. Simon Burton registered for the Chopping Pro campaign via John Deere’s Facebook page in order to get as many likes from the internet community as possible. A total of 64 operators from seven countries entered the contest on Facebook, and 484 people voted for Simon Burton’s post, in which he said: “I love driving the John Deere 8600i and think it’s an engineering genius, so please vote for me!” Simon was rewarded with a professional photo and

video shoot at his local John Deere dealership Sharmans Agricultural Ltd of Grantham. The resulting pictures, taken in front of a new 8000 Series selfpropelled forage harvester, will be displayed on a special mobile billboard that will be driven on a route from Sharmans’ Gonerby Moor, Grantham headquarters to Simon’s home village of Leasingham. The tour is taking place throughout the day on Friday 27th October 2017, when family and friends, colleagues and neighbours are being encouraged to join in the congratulations for their ‘local hero’. Simon Burton also receives a John Deere 8000 Series SPFH driver’s gift pack, including a cap, polo shirt, overalls, waistcoat, softshell jacket, thermal mug and a 99-piece tool box.

New grass & forage belt merger from KUHN offer multiple windrow delivery

KUHN Farm Machinery will be launching a new version of its belt merger grass rake at this year’s AGRITECHNICA event in Hanover from 12-18 November. KUHN Farm Machinery will be launching a new version of its belt merger grass rake at this year’s AGRITECHNICA event in Hanover from 12-18 November. Aimed at large-scale grassland farms and contractors, the MERGE MAXX 950 uses two adjustable, variable width and bi-directional merger belts to give a maximum grass pick-up width of 9.50 metres. The bi-directional design of the MERGE MAXX 950’s twin belts provides multiple windrow delivery options: forage can be delivered into a single central windrow, a single lateral windrow (left or right side), two lateral windrows (one either side) or a central and left or right lateral windrow.

width can be varied between 1.00 and 1.50m. For central windrows, the windrow can be up to 2.20m in width. Auto-regulating rollers at the front and side of the pick-up unit self-adjust their position according to crop thickness. These in turn pass a consistent and constant supply of forage to the merger belts, thus enabling the MERGE MAXX to produce a uniform, airy and faster-drying windrow which makes it easier for the subsequent baler or chopper to collect large volumes of grass: for forage harvesters this can equate to a 2-3 km/h increase in forward operating speed.

As with any rake, clean grass pick-up and the ability to produce a swathe which is free of stones, soil or other impurities, is reliant on the Pick-up and windrow width ability to follow ground can be adjusted to suit the contours accurately. On quantity and type of forage the new MERGE MAXX material being harvested, 950, this is controlled by thus enabling the number three key design elements: of passes and associated articulated pick-up skids, costs to be reduced. For powerful lift-control springs, lateral windrows, the windrow and pivot points which Craggs of Conder Green

provide vertical and angled ground clearance. As well as ensuring good forage quality, less debris within the swathe also translates to less time and money spent on replacing blades and other working parts on the forage harvester or baler. The MERGE MAXX belt merger can handle a variety of forage types, including the most delicate crops, and always preserves full nutritional value of the harvest. Compared to a conventional grass rake, the MERGE MAXX 950 offers a 30-100% increase in working rate, with the greatest time savings to be made when handling wet or heavier forage crops. The MERGE MAXX 950 folds to 3.00m (width) by 7.40m (length) by 3.60m (height) for easy transportation between fields and is compatible for tractors with a minimum power output of 85 hp. The basic machine retails at £65,356.

Limiter edition: 100 years - 100% discount

100 years - 100 days - 100 % discount off an Amazone border spreading system In these days of increasing tramline widths, the area around the field boundary adds up to a fairly substantial strip and so maximising the yield on that first pass with the spreader can make a big difference when it comes to profitability. Amazone pioneered boundary spreading back in the 1980’s with the introduction of the TeleSet border spreading disc on their then revolutionary ZA-U twin disc spreaders. Of course, in those days, one had to get off the tractor to change the disc over and then back again; and it wouldn’t be the first time that a few people went up and down a few tramlines with the border disc still fitted in error before realising it and swopping it back! Then, in 2000, we saw the introduction of the Limiter M which offered a system of preventing the fertiliser going into the hedge bottom by use of a hydraulically-actuated lamella box fitted to the side of the spreader. This baffle system shot the fertiliser back around the corner thus curtailing the sideways throw.

The huge benefit was that the Limiter could be lowered down into the spread fan remotely from the tractor cab and so offered additional comfort and convenience in relation to the old border disc solution.

en spreading discs, which came with introduction of the ZA-M Profis Hydro and Ultra Profis Hydro, again in the noughties, meant that instead of mechanically preventing the spread of fertiliser sideways by limiting its throw by mechanical means, the disc could be slowed down from the cab and so the fertiliser was not thrown as far in the first place. The speed of each individual spreading disc could be altered separately so that the spread pattern up to the border could be fine-tuned on the move taking into account side winds and topography.

Modern electronics then gave us the ability to reduce the application rate on that side so as to prevent overdosing whilst spreading up against a water-course or roadway, the so-called “eco-settings” and thus conforming to EN13739. However, the new Limiter V+, as found on the ZA-V, has brought even more flexibility with its ability to electrically raise and lower from the seat a new open shape of lamella box in Your local approved Amazone dealer 100 steps and so again offerGreat North Rd Dalesgate Works Station Road ing the ability Darrington Keighley Ottringham to control the WF8 3BW BD20 7BX HU12 0BJ t: 01977 795241 t: 01535 632661 t: 01964 622351 spread pattern from the tractor seat. New Holland to showcase its compact tractor and mini excavator ranges

The company will profile its compact Boomer tractor models, displaying the Boomer 25 ROPS and Boomer 40 CAB alongside ROPS mini excavator New Holland will be showcasing its expertise in ground care, sports, amenities, estates, and green space management machinery at this year’s Saltex event. The Company will profile its compact BoomerTM tractor models, displaying the Boomer 25 ROPS with midmounted mower deck and Boomer 40 CAB with frontlinkage, alongside its ROPS mini excavator, from the company’s agricultural construction range, on stand (K189) at the two-day event held at the Birmingham NEC on 1st and 2nd November 2017.

It’s the ideal tractor for small landowners, municipalities, and contractors providing ground maintenance.”

The New Holland compact Boomer tractor range offers five models with power outputs ranging from 23 to 47 hp delivered by quiet, fuel-efficient three and four-cylinder engines. These compact but powerful tractors are responsive, efficient, comfortable, and built to make ground maintenance easier. All models across the range have unique features that keep the operator comfortable while saving valuable time and money.

The mini crawler excavator series features seven models, with engine power ranging from 16.8 to 64.7hp and lift capacity between 1.7 to 6 tonnes. Compact dimensions are matched with high performance to maintain power and versatility when working in difficult-to-access areas.

James Emery, New Holland’s mid-range tractor product specialist in the UK and Ireland, says: “Boomer tractors are well-suited to a variety of tasks, from installation and maintenance of turf, to landscaping and hardscaping.

22 | Agri News

All Boomer models have powerful electro-hydraulically engaged rear, and optional mid, PTOs capable of lifting up to 1250 kg, allowing for the use of a wide range of powered implements. Alongside the Boomer tractors, New Holland will be showcasing its construction range, highlighting its ROPS mini crawler excavator line.

Constant hydraulic flow means New Holland’s mini crawler excavators can power a variety of demanding attachments including soil augers, flail mowers for hedges and

verges, as well as cutterbars and saws. The boom and dipper offers power arm versatility with the ability to work hydraulic shears, breakers and stump grinders. Mick Berry, Construction Sales Manager for New Holland UK and Ireland, says: “We have consciously designed the mini crawler excavators around the operator, the cab’s slim frame pillars ensure excellent all-round visibility, with an improved view of the boom and dipper, enabling the user to work faster with confidence.” The range is available with a choice of canopy or cab, and all variants within the mini crawler excavator range are ROPS (rollover), TOPS (tip-over) and FOPS (falling-object compliant) to ISO standards. All models operate at low noise and vibration levels, allowing for extended work periods with no compromise to operator safety.

Landini tractors - New Rex 4-100F orchard tractor debut

All-new Landini Rex 4-100 F orchard tractor launched at the National Fruit Show The all-new Landini Rex 4-100 F narrow orchard tractor made its debut at the Marden Fruit Society’s National Fruit Show today (October 25/26, Detling, Kent), marking the launch of a new series of specialist narrow tractors. Exhibited by distributor AgriArgo UK & Ireland, and Kent dealer Horsepower UK, the Rex 4-100 F is a 95hp model in the line-up designed as a narrow orchard tractor that can be configured down to 1.3m wide.

There are six other power outputs available from 69111hp to give growers a choice of performance levels. New transmissions have threespeed powershift for the first time, enabling operators to quickly change ground speed when towing or working soilengaging implements without losing momentum or having to use the clutch pedal. Fingertip power shuttle shifting between forward and reverse also makes life more comfortable for the operator.

Front axle suspension is another new feature that cushions the front end of the tractor as it passes over humps and hollows, which can help the driven front wheels maintain traction over rough ground while also giving the driver and mounted

implements a less jarring ride while in work or travelling between jobs. Power comes from a new 2.9-litre compact fourcylinder engine providing similar outputs as before but additional torque at the lower end of the range, while the new Eco pto gearing and Eco 40kph transmission options help fuel consumption by lowering engine speeds in work and during transport. At the same time, larger fuel tanks reduce fill-up frequency, especially with the ‘F’ and ‘GT’ versions as they get almost 40% more fuel capacity at 90-litres. With ‘F’ narrow orchard, ‘GE’ low stance, ‘GT’ traction orientated and ‘V’ ultra-narrow – down to 1m – vineyard models available, the new Rex 4 Series represents a flexible choice of power units for a wide range of fruit and horticultural operations. View the Landini tractor product range for more information on all the models in the series.

Effective Poultry House Cleaning Steve Birchall Poultry House Cleaning Services High pressure powerwashing, disinfectant and cleaners With the poultry industry experiencing more than its fair share of problems over the past 12 months or so no poultry producer can afford to hinder flock performance by allowing a build up of micro organisms. Even low disease levels drag profits back and skimping on the cleaning routine between flocks is false economy, says Lancashire based cleaning specialist Steve Birchall. “There is no opportunity these days to rest buildings between flocks. Turnaround times are tight and it is, therefore, vital that buildings are not only throughly cleaned but disinfected as well, and if there has been a problem

the cleaning and disinfection treatment should take account of it” says Steve, who has been operating a nationwide poultry contract shed cleaning business for over 30 years. His three teams are equipped to carry out whatever cleaning regime producers require and he suggests a good standard routine for anyone who wants the best safeguard. After the litter has been removed, the building and any equipment either retained inside or taken out should be power washed at about 2,500 psi with a combined cleaner/ sanitizer/deodorizer, which should remove some of the 80% of micro organisms at this stage.

“Older buildings are often more difficult to clean than modern ones”, Steve says, “However, if you are going to do the job at all, then it is worth doing properly and you have to take sufficient time, particularly in breeder or laying units where nest boxes and equipment have been in place for 12 months or more. Broiler units with a six or seven day turnaround are less difficult. However, people who prefer to do what is a rather unpleasant job themselves often get rather jaded before it has been done properly. If there are other enterprises on the farm, they have to keep breaking off to do other work.

Fears grow in UK after bird flu cases in Europe

Last winter highly pathogenic H5N8 swept across 18 European countries, including the United Kingdom British authorities are increasingly concerned about the possible return of avian influenza following a number of outbreaks in continental Europe. The risk of avian influenza in the United Kingdom currently remains low, despite confirmation of outbreaks in continental Europe. Authorities have confirmed to the OIE (the World Organisation for Animal Health) that bird flu has struck in a near 42,000-bird commercial layer flock in the Zeeland region of the Netherlands. The strain involved is a low path type H5N2 - the virus involved in large bird flu outbreaks in the United States in 2015. A new highly pathogenic outbreak of a H5 strain has also been reported on a farm in Bulgaria involving nearly 11,000 birds. Culling has been carried out on both farms and restrictions have been put in place around the affected premises. Perhaps more significant for the United Kingdom, is that highly pathogenic H5N8 - the strain that hit the UK and the rest of Europe last winter - has been found in a wild bird in Germany.

This is on a route that migratory birds take on their way to the UK. On Wednesday (25 October), the UK government increased the bird flu risk from low to medium for wild birds in UK, but poultry flocks remain low. Despite the discovery in Germany and the threat level rising to medium for wild birds, the official UK risk level remains low. Despite the risk being low in the UK, EU Member States have been preparing for cases of bird flu this winter. Robert Gooch, chief executive of the British Free Range Egg Producers Association (BFREPA), says he understands that the current risk is lower than it was at the same point last year. “Specialists we have spoken to say that at the moment we are in a better position than we were at this same time last year," said Robert. "Last year cold weather in Russia and continental Europe brought easterly winds, which brought wild fowl to the UK carrying the virus. This year we have been seeing southerly winds. "AI is definitely around but it mostly seems to be travelling

down the central European flyways at the moment. So the risk to the UK seems to be lower than last year at this time . "The weather can ob viously change. It is still likely that we will see an outbreak this winter but the Defra official risk level just now is low." Mr Gooch said he had taken note of the wild bird discovery in Germany, and BFREPA members were being advised to ensure their levels of biosecurity were maintained. But he said he did not think the German case - in a mallard at Niedersachsen - changed the position in the United Kingdom. "We know there is still residual virus in the environment. I don't think this case changes things here just now." Last winter highly pathogenic H5N8 swept across 18 European countries, including the United Kingdom. In the UK there were a total of 13 confirmed cases between December and June, although none of them involved commercial layer flocks. Six of the cases in the UK involved backyard flocks, and there were also outbreaks in turkeys and game birds. Agri News | 27

Every feature is purpose-built to maximize consumer comfort, vehicle stability, and handling – a must for people who are looking for a full day of adventures.

New technical crawlingspecific Can-Am Maverick X3 X rc models A new specialized Can-Am Traxter utility side-by-side vehicle Lausanne, Switzerland, Sept. 26, 2017 – BRP (TSX: DOO) is launching for Europe its Can-Am ATV line-up meeting the new EU regulations. This extensive line-up offers a vast choice for all user profiles, from utility-oriented consumers to recreational or sport users, and it comes with a major breakthrough in the industry: BRP is the first manufacturer to offer ATV models equipped with the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) technology. With this new line-up, the Can-Am brand once again demonstrates its ingenuity and leadership on the market. BRP also unveiled four new 50”-wide Can-Am Maverick Trail side-by-side vehicles at its annual dealer meeting in Dallas, TX. People can now enjoy the Maverick experience while accessing many public trails and tuckedaway destinations with ease.

Bernard Guy,senior vice president, global product strategy at BRP, says, “The Can-Am Maverick Trail lineup introduces our incredible X3 pedigree to trail exploration. People love riding trails because it’s an adventurous escape into nature to discover new destinations with friends, and these ingenious machines are built to maximize the user experience in every way.” The fun doesn’t stop on the trail, though, as BRP also introduced a new technical crawling-specific model for 2018 – the 172hp Can-Am Maverick X3 X rc TURBO R. Rugged crawling is extremely popular (and growing), and BRP went to the rocks to gain real-world insight from owners before finalizing the design. One critical takeaway for the

best possible user experience was the need for a fullylockable front differential. In response, the Can-Am team created a technology called Smart-Lok™*, which is an ingenious fully-lockable onthe-fly front differential with electronically-controlled automatic modes. That smart technology enhances the riding experience and amounts to traction in extreme conditions. The Maverick X3 X rc model is specifically designed for maximum maneuverability even at low speeds with a high ground clearance and large, specialized tires. It also comes loaded with features for maximum protection including rock sliders, front and rear suspension protectors, and a front differential guard for enhanced defense against harsh terrain and rocks. On the utility side of the lineup, BRP introduced a new specialty package to its CanAm Traxter model family. The Traxter X mr HD10 is a mudready vehicle that’s built to tackle grimy conditions with ease. It also has a Smart-Lok front differential, and along with other tough and clever elements, is built from the ground up so people can conquer harsh environments. For additional information and technical specs on these new models, visit /www. canamoffroad.com.

donkey will eat a bale of hay a day as a supplement and indoor stables, barns and field shelters have to be tended; then there’s fencing to be done and the onerous task of poo collecting. At the beginning of 2017 the decision was made for the Sanctuary to purchase a Polaris Ranger Diesel UTV to take on all the day-to-day tasks previously carried out by staff using barrows and body power to carry feed and maintain the Sanctuary. The Ranger was supplied by C & O Tractors of Newport who also provided training. “I don’t know what we did without the Polaris,” says Derek Needham, Charity Manager, “it’s in constant use to do everything from maintenance to moving feed and carrying fence posts to towing a poo cleaner in paddocks. We’ve worked it in all conditions, heavy and wet and it takes on everything, putting smiles on faces

by cutting down on hours of work while protecting people from the weather. It’s so flexible and very popular with the girls who say it’s ‘female friendly’. It certainly frees people up to work with the public and the animals.” The main site is an education centre and learning resource for schools across the island and those visiting from other parts of the UK. There’s a range of educational activities including sessions called ‘classroom in a stable’ with ‘hands on’ practical work combined with looking at the role donkeys have played on the island and the mainland. Less formal visits are available so children can enjoy activities such as ‘treasure Hunting’ and ‘Donkey Spotting. The Polaris Ranger is also so popular with the children The Donkey Sanctuary will soon be running a competition to characterise it and give it a name.

Liam Haslam takes new delivery British Superbike star Leon Haslam has added to his collection of Kawasakis by taking delivery of a Kawasaki Mule Pro-DX utility vehicle. Mule Pro-DX isn’t quite as potent as the 200+bhp Ninja ZX-10RR Haslam races in the British Superbike Championship, but after a short initial test drive, he was impressed and said:

British Superbike star and JG Speedfit Kawasaki rider Leon Haslam has added to his collection of Kawasakis by taking delivery of a new Kawasaki Mule Pro-DX utility vehicle. You might usually associate Haslam with two wheels but when it comes to life at home on his Derbyshire farm, he needs something with a wheel in each corner something that’s tough and capable of handling serious hard work. With selectable two and four-wheel drive plus rear differential lock, power steering, 907kg towing potential and a tipping cargo bed capable of holding 453kg, the Mule Pro-DX makes light work of tough jobs. Haslam plans to put it to work straight away and said: 36 | Agri News

‘We’ve got wild boar, deer and horse liveries on the farm so transporting food and hay for the animals is really important and having the Mule Pro-DX with its large cargo bed will make that job a lot easier and quicker. I also do a lot of training here on my motocross bike so I’ll be using the Mule for moving dirt along with towing rollers and trailers. ‘Unlike a lot of utility vehicles I’ve used previously, with the Mule you’re fully enclosed with windscreen and doors, which means that when the winter months roll around, I’ll be better protected from the weather while I’m at work using it to move things around the farm.’ With a high torque threecylinder diesel engine, the

‘The land that we’ve got here is very undulating so being able to get up the hills while carrying things and towing heavy loads is really useful. From what I’ve experienced of it so far, the Mule makes light work of climbing up banks and hills. Getting through bogs and troughs doesn’t seem to be an issue and I’m keen to get it out on the MX track and am looking forward to getting things done with minimal fuss.’ Simon Riches, ATV and Mule Product Manager at Kawasaki UK, said: ‘With the recent introduction of the Mule Pro models into the UK market, it’s now becoming the choice of many professionals with its strong Mule heritage stretching back over 30 years. The Mule Pro-DX and DXT models have rapidly gained a reputation for reliability and performance and its fantastic to see Leon has recognised this in his choice of utility vehicle for use at home on his farm.’

The utility of choice for many professionals such as farmers, gamekeepers and all grounds-care experts, the two machines at the top of the Kawasaki MULE series will carry the new name PRO for 2016.

Dacia Laureate: “Altogether a very pleasant driving experience”

Richard Fawcett at Yorkshire 4x4 Limited test drives the new Dacia Laureate and here’s what he has to say about it.. readable otherwise fairly usual layout all falling well to hand. A bit plasticky but better than many with a bit of chrome here and there. Access is good, wide doors, comfortable seating, not a lot of support in the seats but sufficient even for my 20 stone or so! You normal lot should be fine.

"Altogether a very pleasant driving experience." "Some say Day-cia some say Dar-cia seems to be Dachia now, sounds quite posh". The cars not bad at all (that's quite a compliment from a Yorkshireman). They brought me the Duster Laureate an up market job, some whistles and bells but still only £18,000.ish. Shame really I was keen to see the cheaper model but hey 5seats, four wheel drive traction control and DAB, delightful power steering and a super slick little 6 speed box and a whole lot more, because spec is great really. Best of all economy 55/56 to the gallon all week, no motorway work just around the villages of these beautiful Yorkshire

dales and moors and including some off road work. It will never of course be a Defender but then most Defender owners never go off road anyway and certainly wouldn't be first choice on road whereas the Duster is comfortable and well mannered on road. Sufficient space for the dogs in the boot with room for the family in the rear and good space up front and plenty room in the footwell for my size 11's. Ergonomically well laid out though the two wheel drive four wheel drive knob on the lower central dash panel is a bit awkward. The built in screen for reverse cameras and nav is a good size and very

After a muddy run care is needed when getting out of the vehicle if you don't want mud on the back of trouser legs, the side rails, built in jobbies look very smart but protrude from the vehicle side so do catch you out if you're not careful. The engine, a super sweet 1500 diesel lots of torque no need to rev it, in fact better not to - it sounded a bit harsh at higher revs but as I say no revving necessary just bags of low down power, amazing these little modern diesels. Throw it into corners and it gripped nicely though suspension perhaps a shade on the soft side for road work but did mean plenty of axle articulation when crossing undulating off road terrain and keeping all four wheels in touch with Terra Firma.

Exciting new era as MG launch brand new compact-SUV

The launch of MG’s new Compact-SUV marks an exciting new era of design for the iconic company

The launch of MG’s new Compact-SUV marks an exciting new era of design for the iconic company. The brand-new Compact-SUV is set to go on sale later this Autumn, representing a major step-change for MG. The new MG design philosophy is based on ‘Emotional Dynamism’, which represents a more expressive design language that emphasises the premium nature of MG’s latest model. The contemporary look harmoniously brings together the three key elements of ‘Emotional’, ‘Humanised’ and ‘Agility’ that accentuate the car’s desirability, accessibility and dynamic stance. One of the key design features is the compelling new face for MG, which features an enlarged, full frame grill, which was inspired by the famous brand’s heritage, but executed in a contemporary way.

44 | Agri News

It allows for a much bigger MG badge to take centre stage and showcase pride in the brand. Carl Gotham, Design Director of SAIC European Design Centre, said: “It’s a really exciting time for MG as it starts to roll out its new brand identity. Emotional Dynamism brings to the fore a premium feel to the new Compact-SUV with exceptional attention to detail throughout, such as the distinctive detailing on the ‘eye’ headlights and signature tail lights. It has a level of detailing and range of impressive features you would not expect to find on a car of this size or price.”

goes on sale this Autumn. The all-new Compact-SUV will join the highly-praised MG3 and MG GS at a time when the iconic brand is recording an outstanding sales performance in 2017. Its sales were up by nearly 83% yearon-year in August, driven by its well-established, simple and transparent scrappage scheme. MG Motor UK is championing consumers by providing them with exceptional choice, excellent value for money and a hassle-free buying process.

Five essential elements that inform the new SsangYong Rexton

The new SsangYong Rexton 4x4 is now on sale in the UK, heralding major advances in style, quality, safety and technology for the brand journey by driving to the SsangYong Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials in Oxfordshire. (See separate press release). Introduction Impressing with its sheer presence and beautifully balanced exterior, new Rexton is a large D/E-segment four-wheel drive that offers a prestige cabin for passengers to travel in supreme comfort, while disguising its tough and rugged off-road capability. Representing a huge step forward in every area - looks and style, interior ambience, structure and safety, performance and technology, this new car stays true to SsangYong’s core brand values with extremely competitive pricing from £27,500 on the road. Commenting on the new car’s launch, Steve Gray, marketing & communications director of SsangYong Motor UK says: ”Following hard on the heels of Tivoli when SsangYong set new standards for value-priced compact SUVs, new Rexton is further evidence of the brand’s re-generation after Mahindra made significant investments in the company. It demonstrates the rapid progress being made as a specialist producer of 4x4s and SUVs.

48 | Agri News

“Rexton is the second addition to our all-new model line-up. SsangYong is committed to introducing a new car every year for the next three years, which includes a pick-up truck derived from Rexton early in 2018. The company is also focused on creating further growth by developing petrol powered, EV and other eco-friendly vehicles. “For what is generally perceived as a value-brand, I think everyone will be astonished by the quality of this new car - it’s a huge advance.” In what might be called the ultimate ‘test drive’, five SsangYong Rexton SUVs completed a 50 day, 8,000 mile drive from the SsangYong factory at Pyeongtaek in South Korea to Europe, via Beijing and the Silk Road. Designed to test the vehicles in extreme conditions, the Rexton Trans Eurasia Trail travelled through ten different countries, including China, Kazakhstan and Russia. All five cars arrived in Frankfurt in time for press day at the IAA motor show, before two of the cars completed their epic

The new Rexton is a large, D/E-segment authentic 4x4. It is powered by a 2.2 litre turbo diesel engine delivering maximum power of 181PS and maximum torque of 420Nm, with a 6-speed manual or 7-speed Mercedes-Benz automatic transmission. It measures 4,850mm in length, 1,960mm wide, 1,825mm high, and has a 2,865mm wheelbase. Style and space Developed under the project name of Y400 and seen as the LIV-2 concept at the Paris motor show in September 2016, the new car is known internationally as Rexton (G4 Rexton in Korea), and takes its inspiration from the ‘Dignified Motion’ of SsangYong’s design language, ‘Nature-born 3 Motion’. This imposing, authentic fourwheel-drive features a body-onframe construction to create an extremely robust and durable car, yet features a dignified and beautifully balanced style throughout.

Subaru Forester gets even safer with eyesight

Subaru Forester has been updated in tijme for winter with the addition of Eyesight, Subaru’s advanced driver assist technology. Subaru Forester has been updated in time for winter with the addition of EyeSight, Subaru’s advanced driver assist technology, fitted as standard equipment. EyeSight acts as a second pair of eyes for the driver and depending on the vehicle’s speed, can completely avoid and significantly reduce the severity of accidents at high speed. With safety one of the main objectives, EyeSight was also developed to lower carbon emissions by reducing incident congestion and subsequently

lower the economic effects of sitting in traffic. EyeSight has two stereo cameras, mounted on each side of the rear-view mirror, and they use image recognition to capture three-dimensional colour images with clinical precisions. The technology can distinguish vehicles, motorbikes, bicycles, pedestrians, lane markings and road furniture and can differentiate between these and determine the general traffic conditions. With an emphasis on realworld tests and evaluations,

EyeSight has been developed to correspond exclusively to the individual country’s traffic conditions. In total EyeSight uses six technologies to maximise safety including Adaptive Cruise Control, Pre-Collision Braking, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, Lane Departure and Sway Warning, Lane Keep Assist and Lead Vehicle Start Alert. The institute for Traffic Accident Research and Data Analysis in Japan produced a study of Subaru vehicles involved in accidents between 2010 and 2014. It found that there were 61% fewer accidents involving EyeSight equipped cars compared to those without. Globally, the milestone of one million EyeSight-equipped vehicles on the road was hit back in 2016. In the UK, Forester is the third model in the range to be fitted with EyeSight. Subaru vehicles are already among the safest on the road today; with all three vehicles in the SUV range receiving the maximum 5*Euro NCAP rating. EyeSight will be standard equipment on all Forester XE Lineartronic and XE Premium Lineartronic models from October and will also be equipped with a black shark fin antenna and DAB radio. Prices start from £28,995.00 on the road.
