This is the advice of Germinal’s Ben Wixey, who says turning stock onto recovering grassland too quickly could prove counterproductive. “If grazed before they reach the optimum growth stage, regrowth of grassland swards will be stunted and that will mean less grazing later in the season,” he points out. “If grazing is critically short, it will be better to select a sacrifice area to use as a platform for feeding supplementary silage

until the better-performing grazing fields have reached the optimum growth stage. “One benefit of the heatwave is that soils may well stay warmer for longer into the autumn. This will offer the potential for late season growth and extended grazing, so it is worth looking after leys during the period of recovery. “Identifying the poorest performing fields is also important, so that these can be ear-marked for reseeding. Again, warmer soils will extend the opportunity to establish new leys that are going to be an important part of restoring forage stocks.”

New Kuhn disc cultivators for lower powered tractors

Kuhn Farm Machinery has launched two mounted versions of its Optimer stubble cultivator for use with lower power tractors KUHN Farm Machinery has launched two mounted versions of its OPTIMER stubble cultivator for use with lower power tractors. Available in working widths of 3 or 4 metres, the new OPTIMER XL 100-series machines feature two rows of independent discs followed by a roller bar which can be equipped with a variety of KUHN press wheels. Both versions use large diameter (620mm) notched discs made of 6mm thick steel which are capable of working at depths from 5 to 15cm: working depth can be adjusted either manually as

standard or hydraulically as an option. The large diameter of the discs makes them able to incorporate high volumes of trash and crop residue easily and efficiently. Each disc is mounted on four elastomer blocks which enable them to move independently over obstacles, thereby maintaining an even working depth across the machineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s full width, even when working in very stony conditions. Adjustable soil retaining discs which can be angled 14o to the front or 14o rearwards, and by up to 12o vertically, prevent soil being thrown out of the cultivated strip and maintain

level and consistent seedbed preparation. The second row of discs is followed by a roller bar which can be equipped with a choice of tube or ring rollers (see table below for individual roller specifications). All discs and rollers are mounted on sealed-for-life, nomaintenance bearings. The compact design of the OPTIMER XL 300 and OPTIMER XL 400 makes both machines compatible for use with smaller tractors: the 3m version is suitable for 105165hp tractors while the 4m version requires 140-220hp.

With the legal requirement for all types of pesticide application equipment to be tested, along with the introduction of fertiliser spreader testing in 2015, NSTS have continued to give excellent coverage across the whole of the UK, with test centres and qualified examiners providing these services to all sectors operating the different types of equipment. NSTS have also revamped their website www.nsts.

org.uk , making it easier to search for your nearest test centre or to check the test date from a report number. There is also up-to-date information on the requirements and timescales for testing of all the different types of application equipment, including any additional requirements within Red Tractor Assurance schemes. Although there is no legal requirement for fertiliser spreaders to be tested, the NSTS test offers a comprehensive inspection of the machine, followed by a tray test to confirm the evenness of spread across the full application width.

National Egg & Poultry Award winners named in inaugural ceremony The 2018 National Egg & Poultry Award winners were announced on Tuesday night in a prestigious ceremony at London’s Royal Garden Hotel LJ Fairburn & Son scooped the Poultry Business of the Year award in recognition of their sustained programme of investment and growth, while Moy Park was named processor of the year. Noble Foods won the prize for marketing initiative of the year for its Happy Eggs campaign, and Traditional Norfolk Poultry walked away with Grower of the Year. The National Egg & Poultry Awards were launched this year as an annual event by Poultry Business magazine and Lewis Business Media to recognise excellence and innovation in the egg and poultry sectors. Automation in plants is truly impressive to see, and the level of investment in some businesses – into new equipment, new processes, new people – shows this industry is fit for the future. “Growing and supplying food is the most essential, basic role any society depends upon. As we often hear when discussions of economics, politics and the environment come up – everyone’s got to eat. And whatever changes in the world around us that fact will remain. “And what’s really encouraging is that all the winds are set fair for those in the egg and poultry business.

“In 2018, six billion eggs were sold to UK consumers – the highest number ever. “In the three months ending in April, 130 million kilos of poultry meat was sold to UK consumers – nearly 3% up on the same period a year ago.“ In the individual awards, newcomer Lyn Williams was named stockman of the year. She works on a 16,000 freerange laying unit producing eggs for Tesco through egg packer Anglia Free Range. The unit was established in January 2017 on a green field site on an upland beef and sheep farm that had no experience of poultry farming before. The first flock of Lohmann Brown is about to be depleted and they have produced 325 eggs per bird at a mortality of 3.7%. Anna Healy was named unit manager of the year for her work at Joice & Hill Poultry. Over the last five years she has managed the expansion and modernisation programme to ensure the business has one of the most modern, bio-secure and efficient hatcheries in the UK.

Effective Poultry House Cleaning Steve Birchall Poultry House Cleaning Services High pressure powerwashing, disinfectant and cleaners With the poultry industry experiencing more than its fair share of problems over the past 12 months or so no poultry producer can afford to hinder flock performance by allowing a build up of micro organisms. Even low disease levels drag profits back and skimping on the cleaning routine between flocks is false economy, says Lancashire based cleaning specialist Steve Birchall. “There is no opportunity these days to rest buildings between flocks. Turnaround times are tight and it is, therefore, vital that buildings are not only throughly cleaned but disinfected as well, and if there has been a problem

the cleaning and disinfection treatment should take account of it” says Steve, who has been operating a nationwide poultry contract shed cleaning business for over 30 years. His three teams are equipped to carry out whatever cleaning regime producers require and he suggests a good standard routine for anyone who wants the best safeguard. After the litter has been removed, the building and any equipment either retained inside or taken out should be power washed at about 2,500 psi with a combined cleaner/ sanitizer/deodorizer, which should remove some of the 80% of micro organisms at this stage.

“Older buildings are often more difficult to clean than modern ones”, Steve says, “However, if you are going to do the job at all, then it is worth doing properly and you have to take sufficient time, particularly in breeder or laying units where nest boxes and equipment have been in place for 12 months or more. Broiler units with a six or seven day turnaround are less difficult. However, people who prefer to do what is a rather unpleasant job themselves often get rather jaded before it has been done properly. If there are other enterprises on the farm, they have to keep breaking off to do other work.
