Heavy Duty Flail Toppers

Direct sales specialist Spaldings has added a range of flail toppers to its field equipment product line that offers farmers and contractors a long-lasting investment designed to cope with a demanding workload. The heavy-duty implements come in sizes from 1.8m to 2.8m rigid, 4.8m and 6.1m folding and 2.2m with a swing arm offset mechanism. The 2.5m and 2.8m models have hydraulic side-shift. All the flail mowers are tractor rear-mounted but the 2.5m and 2.8m TMS models have a twin headstock so they can be operated on the front or rear tractor hitch and are suitable for use with reverse-drive tractors. Steel chains or flaps prevent objects being thrown forwards without impeding progress in dense vegetation and a full-width
steel roller regulates working height to protect the flails and prevent scalping. “The machines are produced by TMC Cancela, a manufacturer based in northern Spain that uses the engineering standards it applies to forestry and construction equipment for this range of agricultural toppers,” says Alex Smith, Spaldings product development co-ordinator. “They are not the cheapest machines of their type but they are engineered to do the job well without giving trouble, and to last a long time.” All models from 2.5m upwards have a six-belt drive pulley for the thickwalled (12mm) flail rotor, with fan blades built into the large pulley to avoid any likelihood of the belts overheating. Interchangeable pulleys adapt the machines to 540 and 1000rpm tractor
pto speeds. For extra heavy-duty applications, selected models have TMC Cancela’s Boltop flail coupling, which provides a socket connection between the 27mm bolts and lugs on the rotor such that the bolt head is completely embedded in the lug and cannot come loose. On other models, the 20mm and 24mm flail bolts are significantly larger than the 16mm bolts typically used on other makes of flail topper. Strenx performance steels are used in all but the medium-duty TP-180, providing the flexibility to cope with impacts and stress loads while being much stronger than mild steel so the machines can be built for durability without being overly heavy. Other notable features include an freewheel gearbox on all models, adjustable rear hood on TJL-280, TJP-480 and TJP610 models, and optional lighting and reflector kits. Prices start at £3475 for the TMS Cancela TP-180 mulching topper, which comes with four-belt drive, replaceable skids and counter-blades and removable rear scarifying tines, rising to £18,750 for the TJP-610 hydraulic folding topper. A new competition aimed at injecting some feel-good factor into Scotland’s arable farming sector is set to be announced at AgriScot next month. The AgriScot Scottish Arable Farm of the Year Award, aims to emulate the success of the Scottish Dairy, Scotch Beef and Scottish Sheep Farm of the Year competitions. A cab designed around the safety and wellbeing of the operator Blue Cab™ 4 is an innovative concept designed around the safety and improved internal air quality for the operator. It has two levels of filtration in a single system: category 2 and category 4 filtration, in a closed circuit internal pressurisation system. On the grape harvester, this intelligent system starts category 4 filtration in automatic mode only at the moment the coupled sprayer is activated. Blue Cab 4 offers other unique features such
as the automatic air-cleaning valve (patented) to bleed the air in the cab before pressurising and starting category 4 filtration as well as the filter management system that keeps track of the maintenance intervals and consumption of the filters themselves. Upgraded Farmall C range revealed / First international show for new Luxxum tractors and latest generation Maxxum models Case IH is using EIMA 2016, the international farm machinery show to be held in Bologna, Italy, from November 9-13, 2016, to launch an upgraded Farmall C tractor range, while the show will represent the first international exhibition for the new Luxxum range – a 2016 Tractor of the Year finalist – plus the revised Maxxum range. Examples from the improved seven-model, 58114hp Farmall C tractor range, incorporating a number of new features for 2017, will make their European debut at EIMA 2016,. Like the larger models in the Case IH range, they can now be specified with the Multicontroller armrest for fingertip control of key tractor functions including transmission and hydraulics. Maximum lift capacity on the four largest tractors can now be increased to 4,400kg when an optional second assister ram is specified. Further options include a three-speed (540/540E/1,000rpm) PTO, and an ‘eco’ 40kph top speed achieved at lower engine rpm, plus the ability

Luxxum makes international show debut Spanning 99-117hp, the new Luxxum models launched earlier this autumn will also be seen for the first time at a major international show. Midrange tractors with maximum specification levels, they feature a 32F/32R automatic gearshift with power shuttle, the Multicontroller armrest with integrated loader joystick, and cab and front axle suspension. The transmission offers four powershift steps and eight ranges, and can be set to shift progressively within each of the lower four ranges for field work, and through the higher four for road travel. The Maxxum range has been restyled and improved for next year, with four 115-145hp four-cylinder models and two 145hp six-cylinder tractors all meeting Stage IV emissions legislation. Further Improvements include a new work light package, revised styling and a single-piece windscreen. In the cab there are upgraded seat choices, and the option of Class 3 ISOBUS control on Maxxum Multicontroller and Maxxum CVX models, allowing compatible implements to control tractor operation for maximum efficiency. HMC II Headland Management eases operation at field ends while, at the rear of the tractors, new spool valve positioning with colour-coded covers provides easier identification when connecting implement hydraulic services. Other exhibits will include recent additions to the tractor range, including the 270-300hp Optum – upper medium size tractor category winner in the Machine of the Year 2016 awards – and the unique rear-tracked Magnum Rowtrac, plus Puma tractor models. Axial-Flow combines will include a 140 series model incorporating concave section size reductions and other upgrades announced last year.

As of 1 November 2016, new owners of John Deere 7310R tractors are eligible to participate in a programme that rewards customers financially for fuel-efficient driving on the road. The Fuel Guarantee Programme is designed to offer a special incentive to customers for limiting or even reducing the fuel consumption of their tractor in transport mode. It applies to any new 7310R model ordered by 30 April 2017. “As approximately 50 per cent of the cost of ownership is spent on fuel, we want to encourage customers to proactively monitor their tractor’s fuel consumption,” says Chris Wigger, Deere’s Region 2 vice president sales & marketing. “The capabilities of JDLink and our network of specialist dealers will enable operators to track their machine usage and fuel efficiency when in transport mode. This is one of the key benefits of our FarmSight precision farming approach.” Once the customer signs up to the programme, he and his supplying dealer will use JDLink to record the tractor’s actual fuel consumption in transport mode during the first full year of ownership. If the total fuel consumption has exceeded the John Deere target level, customers will be refunded by the company. If the tractor consumes less than the targeted amount, owners of more efficient machines will still be rewarded, as they will be reimbursed twice the price per litre saved. Depending on the amount of transport work carried out through the year, this could mean a cash refund worth up to four figures. John Deere takes its responsibility to the environment very seriously. Combined with the lower fuel consumption of 7R Series tractors, the new Fuel Guarantee Programme is aiming to make a significant contribution to reducing emissions – which is good news for the environment. No poultry producer can afford to hinder flock performance by allowing a build up of micro organisms. Even low disease levels drag profits back and skimping on the cleaning routine between flocks is false economy, says Lancashire based cleaning specialist Steve Birchall. “There is no opportunity these days to rest buildings between flocks. Turnaround times are tight and it is, therefore, vital that buildings are not only thoroughly cleaned but disinfected as well, and if there has been a health problem the cleaning and disinfection treatment should take account of it” says Steve, who has been operating a nationwide contract poultry shed cleaning business for over 35 years. His two teams are equipped to carry out whatever cleaning regime producers require
and he suggests a good standard retune for anyone who wants the best safeguard. After the litter has been removed, the building and any equipment either trained inside or taken out should be power washed at about 3400 psi with a combined cleaner/sanitizer/ deodorizer, which should remove some 80% of micro organisms at this stage. “Older buildings are often more difficult to clean than more modern ones,” Steve says, “however, if you are going to do the job at all then it is worth doing properly and you have to take sufficient time, particularly in breeder or laying units where nest boxes and equipment have been in place for 12 months or more. Broiler units with a six or seven day turnaround are less difficult. However, people who prefer to do what is a rather unpleasant job themselves often get rather jaded before it has been done properly. If there are any other enterprises on the farm, they have to keep breaking off to do other work. Poultry buildings, whether they are broiler, breeder, layer or turkey units, not only need to look clean, they must be disease free. The standard routine might, in the event of a flock health problem be extended to include powerful vircuide. All the products used should be biodegradable and safe should there be a run-off into a watercourse.
