PARQUE NATURAL DEL TURIA Cerca de la ciudad de Valencia se encuentra este parque, con una extensión aproximada de 4.692 hectáreas y una longitud de 35 kilómetros. En este espacio se produce el encuentro entre los relieves orográficos del Sistema Ibérico y la llanura del río Turia, configurando un paisaje plano rodeado de suaves ondulaciones atravesadas por barrancos. Cuenta con una rica biodiversidad en fauna y flora. Conserva varias especies características del bosque mediterráneo (orquídea, lentisco, zarzaparrilla, pino carrasco…) y presenta como moradores ardillas, cernícalos, lagartos y jabalíes. Su elevado valor cultural se ve reflejado en la existencia del poblado de la edad de bronce de la Lloma de Betxí y el castro fortificado visigodo de Valencia la Vella. Por otro lado, el paso de la guerra civil española dejó un conjunto de estructuras que hoy forman parte del patrimonio histórico. Mención especial requieren los azudes y acequias, de un gran valor patrimonial e hidráulico, destacando la Real acequia de Moncada, de época islámica.

THE TURIA NATURE PARK The park lies close to the City of Valencia and stretches for 35 kilometres, with a surface area of approximately 4,692 hectares. Here we can see where the mountains of the Iberian System meet the plain of the River Turia, creating a flat landscape surrounded by gentle rolling hills crossed by ravines. The area has rich and diverse fauna and flora. It is home to several species that characterise the Mediterranean woodland (orchids, mastic trees, sarsaparilla, Aleppo pines, etc.) as well as animals such as squirrels, kestrels, lizards and wild boar. Its considerable cultural value can be seen in the Bronze Age settlement at La Lloma de Betxí and the fortified Visigothic fort at Valencia la Vella. As well as the above, the Spanish Civil war left its mark with structures that are now part of the historic heritage. Special mention should be made of the irrigation channels and dams, all of incredible value, both historically and hydraulically, especially the Real Acequia de Moncada, dating back to Islamic times.

FONT ROJA Situado en la provincia de Alicante, en los términos municipales de Alcoy e Ibi, abarca unas 2.298 hectáreas. Comprende la alineación montañosa de l’Alt de Sant Antoni, el carrascal de la Font Roja y la Teixereta. La cumbre del Menejador, con 1.356 metros de altura, es la cota más elevada de este espacio natural protegido. Con una vegetación muy abundante y bien conservada, nos descubre un bosque de carrascas de roble valenciano, acompañado por gran diversidad de plantas como hiedras y madreselvas. Las condiciones climáticas favorecen la abundancia y variedad de flora, hongos, líquenes y musgos, pudiendo encontrar 455 especies diferentes. El formidable bosque da cobijo al gato montés, jabalí, tejón, garduña y comadrejas. Con todo, los farallones de la sierra del Menejador son el hábitat por excelencia del águila perdicera, emblema del parque natural. En el parque también podemos encontrar joyas de la arquitectura tradicional como la Nevera Coloma.

FONT ROJA The Font Roja Nature Park is located in the province of Alicante, covering some 2,298 hectares in the municipal areas of Alcoy and Ibi. It includes the l’Alt de Sant Antoni mountains, the Font Roja kermes oak woodlands and the Teixereta mountain. The summit of El Menejador, at 1,356 metres, is the highest point of this protected natural area. The exuberant vegetation is very well preserved, with a Valencian kermes oak forest and a wide variety of plants that include ivy and honeysuckle. The climate favours the abundance and variety of flora, fungi, lichens and mosses, with some 455 different species having been catalogued. This exceptional forest provides a home for mountain cats, wild boar, badgers, beech martens and weasels. In addition, the rocky crags of the Sierra del Menejador are the ideal habitat for the Bonelli’s eagles that are the symbol of the nature park. In the park we can also find gems of traditional architecture such as the Nevera Coloma ice store.

SIERRA DE MARIOLA La Sierra de Mariola forma un parque natural comprendido entre el norte de la provincia de Alicante y el sur de Valencia (L’Alcoià, El Comtat y La Vall d’Albaida). Sus más de 16.000 hectáreas están presididas por los 1.389 metros del emblemático Montcabrer. Como lugar de nacimiento de los ríos Serpis, Clariano y Vinalopó presenta innumerables fuentes, manantiales y surgencias que salpican toda la superficie de la sierra. El parque es muy rico en variedades vegetales, pudiéndose observar el bosque de tejos más meridional de Europa. Pero la verdadera riqueza de la sierra se encuentra en la diversidad florística, llegándose a identificar 1.200 especies. Se pueden destacar la salvia de Mariola, el rabo de gato, el espliego, el hipérico o el té de roca. Por otra parte, su variedad de ambientes hace que posea un gran número de especies animales, entre reptiles, aves y mamíferos. Numerosos yacimientos arqueológicos aparecen por toda la zona, abarcando desde el paleolítico hasta la época medieval. Además, destacan las abundantes fuentes, masías y pozos de nieve (caves), así como una intrincada red de senderos, que evidencian la intensa actividad de aprovechamiento de los recursos naturales llevada a cabo por sus antiguos pobladores.

SIERRA DE MARIOLA The Sierra de Mariola mountain range makes up a nature park lying between the provinces of Alicante to the south and Valencia to the north (L’Alcoià, El Comtat and La Vall d’Albaida). Its over 16,000 hectares are overlooked by the emblematic Montcabrer at 1,389 metres. The rivers Serpis, Clariano and Vinalopó all rise here and there are countless springs and sources scattered throughout the mountains. The park has a very varied plant life, with Europe’s southernmost yew tree wood. However, the real worth of the range lies in its diverse ﬂora, with over 1,200 species catalogued. Special mention should be given to Mariola sage, rabo de gato (Arundinella Hispida), lavender, St. John’s Wort and té de roca (Jasonia Glutinosa). Its varied habitats also provide a home for many species of reptiles, birds and mammals. There are archaeological sites all over the park, ranging from the Palaeolithic to the Mediaeval. There are also numerous springs, farmhouses and pozos de nieve (caves) or ice stores, as well as an intricate network of footpaths that shows how intensely the area’s natural resources were made use of by its ancient inhabitants.

PENYAGOLOSA En la provincia de Castellón, las localidades de Villahermosa del río, Vistabella del Maestrazgo y Chodos dan acceso a las 1.094 hectáreas de este fabuloso parque. Dominado por el pico que le da nombre, es la segunda cima más alta de la Comunitat Valenciana con 1.814 metros. Su clima mediterráneo con influencias continentales le confiere una gran diversidad de especies botánicas. La vegetación se desarrolla en el parque natural en función de la altitud y la geología. En las cotas más bajas crece el pino negral, a la solana encontramos el pino rodeno y en las umbrías y tierras altas predomina el pino albar. También es frecuente observar formaciones de sabina albar. Cabe destacar la presencia de roble valenciano, el tejo y formaciones de melojo. De la fauna asociada a este ecosistema destacan las grandes rapaces (el águila real, el águila perdicera, el águila calzada y el halcón peregrino) y el búho real. Entre los mamíferos abunda la presencia del gato montés, la cabra montesa, la jineta, el tejón y la mayor población valenciana del murciélago troglodita. Incluido en el parque, el barranco de la Pegunta fue declarado en 1998 microrreserva vegetal, para favorecer la conservación de las especies botánicas amenazadas que conviven en él.

PENYAGOLOSA In the province of Castellón, the towns of Villahermosa del Río, Vistabella del Maestrazgo and Chodos act as gateways to the 1,094 hectares of this superb nature park. Dominated by the mountain of the same name (at 1,814 metres, the second-highest peak in the Region of Valencia). The area enjoys a Mediterranean climate with a continental inﬂuence, making for an impressive diversity of ﬂora. The type of vegetation depends mainly on altitude and geology. Black pine trees grow at lower elevations, with maritime pine on sunny slopes and Scots pine in shady areas and at higher altitudes. Spanish juniper is also a frequent sight, as are Portuguese oaks, yew trees and formations of rebollo oak. The wildlife in the area includes birds of prey (golden eagle, Bonelli's eagle, booted eagle and peregrine falcon) and the Eurasian eagle owl. Mammals include the mountain cat, mountain goat, jennet, badger and the largest population of cave bats in the region. In 1998 the Barranco de la Pegunta gorge was declared a plant micro reserve, to help conserve the threatened plant species that grow there.

TINENÇA DE BENIFASSÀ Se extiende por los municipios de la Pobla de Benifassà y Castell de Cabres en la provincia de Castellón. Posee una extensión de 4.967,54 hectáreas, con un continuo de imponentes muelas de piedra y laderas muy escarpadas, que dibujan el perfil del parque por donde discurren los ríos Sénia y Servol. Carrascales, robles valencianos y pinares de pino negral destacan en su flora, rica en bosque de ribera. Dentro de la fauna encontraremos la cabra montesa, aunque el grupo de vertebrados más diverso y el que aporta a la Tinença un mayor valor dentro de la Comunitat Valenciana es el de las aves. Destacan, concretamente, el gran grupo de rapaces que realizan sus nidos en la zona: el águila real y la culebrera, el halcón peregrino y, sobre todo, el buitre leonado.

TINENÇA DE BENIFASSÀ The park lies between Pobla de Benifassà and Castell de Cabres in the province of Castellón. It extends for 4,967.54 hectares, with a continuous succession of impressive rocky outcrops and very steep slopes that trace the outline of the park through which the Sénia and Servol rivers run. Kermes oak, Valencian oak and Austrian pine forests take centre stage, with rich riverbank woodland. Animals found here include mountain goats, although birds make up the most diverse group and the one that endows Tinença with its importance in the Region of Valencia. Outstanding examples include the many birds of prey that nest in the area: golden eagles and short-toed eagles, peregrine falcons and, above all, Griﬀon vultures.

SIERRA DE ESPADÁN Este parque natural castellonense, entre las comarcas del Alto Palancia, Alto Mijares y la Plana Baixa, y en las últimas estribaciones del Sistema Ibérico, se extiende a lo largo de 31.181 hectáreas. Sus montañas más altas superan los mil metros como el pico de la Rápita con 1.106 metros, el alto del Pinar con 1.106 metros o el pico Espadán con 1.083 metros. Junto al río Veo, diversos arroyos, ramblas y barrancos surcan el parque, desaguando en los ríos Palancia o Mijares. Es hábitat de raras especies forestales, como musgos y plantas de humedales, ya que más del 50% de estas especies tienen su representación en este parque natural. Por otra parte, la fauna del parque es eminentemente forestal, con una buena representación de los distintos grupos, destacando en el de los anfibios el gallipato y las 16 especies de murciélagos, siete de las cuales de gran importancia, estando por ello catalogadas como especies amenazadas. En cuanto al patrimonio histórico, el macizo de la Sierra de Espadán conserva muchas construcciones tradicionales destinadas al almacenamiento de nieve y numerosos castillos, como los de Ayódar, Almedíjar o Eslida.

SIERRA DE ESPADÁN Between the Alto Palancia, Alto Mijares and the Plana Baixa areas, and in the last foothills of the Iberian System, the Sierra de Espadán nature park in Castellón extends for 31,181 hectares. The three highest peaks exceed one thousand metres and are la Rápita, at 1,106 metres, el Pinar, at 1,106 metres, and el Espadán, at 1,083 metres. As well as the River Veo, various other rivers, streams and ravines ﬂow through the park into the larger Palancia and Mijares rivers. The area is known for its rare varieties of moss and wetland plants as more than 50 per cent of these species can be found in the nature park. There is a varied range of wildlife in the park, including the Spanish ribbed newt and 16 species of bat, seven of which are of great importance and are listed as endangered. In terms of historic heritage, the massif of the Sierra de Espadán is home to many traditional constructions for storing snow, as well as various castles, such as the ones to be found at Ayódar, Almedíjar and Eslida.

SIERRA CALDERONA Situado entre la provincia de Valencia y la de Castellón sus 17.772 hectáreas ocupan terrenos de 18 municipios diferentes. En el margen derecho del río Palancia el parque desarrolla su perfil, mediante magníficas muelas calizas (Mola de Segart, Xocainet o la Redona) pero su máxima altura la alcanza la cota del Montemayor con 1.015 metros. De la flora existente, cabe destacar la reintroducción de la jara de Cartagena, especie que se pensaba extinta en la Península ibérica, pero de la cual se localizó un ejemplar en una población cercana al parque. La fauna es eminentemente forestal con presencia de grandes aves rapaces que nidifican en los formidables farallones que salpican la Sierra Calderona. Observaremos vestigios de castillos y masías fortificadas como el de Olocau, el de Serra o el de Segart y la aldea conocida como L’Olla. También se puede observar la Cartuja de Portaceli, datada del 1272.

SIERRA CALDERONA Lying between the provinces of Valencia and Castellón, its 17,772 hectares stretch over 18 different municipalities. The park rises on the right bank of the River Palancia, with magnificent limestone hills (Mola de Segart, Xocainet and La Redona), although it reaches its maximum height of 1,015 metres at Montemayor. The flora includes a rare example of the Jara de Cartagena (Cistus heterophyllus carthaginensis), a species that was believed to be extinct on the Iberian Peninsula but was found close to the park. The typical woodland fauna includes large birds of prey that nest on the impressive crags found everywhere in the Sierra Calderona. You can find the remains of castles and fortified farmhouses, such as those at Olocau, Serra and Segart, as well as the hamlet of L’Olla. Also of interest is the Cartuja de Portaceli charterhouse, dating back to 1272.

PUEBLA DE SAN MIGUEL En la comarca del Rincón de Ademuz situado al Noroeste de la provincia de Valencia se encuentra el parque Natural de la Puebla de San Miguel, con una superficie de 6.390 hectáreas. En este espacio se localiza el punto más elevado de la Comunitat Valenciana, el Alto de las Barracas, con 1.839 metros de altura. Esta altitud, la distancia que lo separa del litoral, junto a otros condicionantes físicos y humanos configuran unos paisajes únicos. Estas características orográficas y climáticas han favorecido el desarrollo de comunidades vegetales de una rareza y belleza excepcional. Posee múltiples variedadestípicas del bosque mediterráneo (quejigo, tejo, pino albar y silvestre, pino negro…), entre las que destacan sus sabinas milenarias y sus espectaculares carrascas, así como una gran cantidad de especies aromáticas (mostajo, tomillo, terrero, pudio…). Respecto a la fauna, hay un gran número de especies animales. Cuenta con aves rapaces (águila calzada, águila real, lechuza…); mamíferos como la cabra hispánica y el gato montés; y una amplia representación de reptiles, anfibios e insectos. En la zona, además, existen abundantes yacimientos paleontológicos, tanto de dinosaurios y especies marinas como de los primeros pobladores de cronología prehistórica.

PUEBLA DE SAN MIGUEL Rincón de Ademuz is located in the northeast of the province of Valencia and is home to the 6,390 hectare Puebla de San Miguel Nature Park. Here you will ﬁnd the Alto de las Barracas, at 1,839 metres the highest point in the Region of Valencia. The altitude and the distance from the coast combine with other physical and human factors to create unique landscapes. The relief and the climate have favoured the development of exceptionally rare and beautiful plant communities. There are countless varieties of plants typical of Mediterranean woodland (gall oaks, yew trees, Scots pine, mountain pine, etc.), with pride of place going to the ancient savin juniper and the spectacular kermes oaks, as well as an abundance of aromatic species (whitebeam, Poley or Teucrium Polium L., Rhamnus alpina, etc.). The many animal species include birds of prey (booted eagles, golden eagles, owls, etc.), mammals such as Spanish ibex and mountain cats, as well as a wide range of reptiles, amphibians and insects. The area also has many palaeontological sites, with remains of dinosaurs, marine species and the ﬁrst prehistoric settlers.

CHERA –SOT DE CHERA En la provincia de Valencia, enmarcado en los municipios de Chera y Sot de Chera se encuentra este parque natural que comprende un espacio de 6.451,17 hectáreas. Sede del primer parque geológico de la Comunitat Valenciana, se trata de una superficie abrupta y montañosa situada en el interior de una enorme fosa tectónica rodeada de picos, con desplazamientos de la corteza terrestre que pueden llegar hasta los 600 metros. Incluido como Lugar de Interés Comunitario cuenta con bellos paisajes como los formados por el río Sot, el embalse de Buseo, el barranco de la Hoz o las cumbres más importantes: el Pico Ropé de 1.136 metros y el Cinco Pinos de 1.171 metros. La vegetación propia del bosque mediterráneo da cobijo a grandes aves rapaces, unidas a una importante población de anfibios. Se trata de un lugar privilegiado en el que se estiman más de 200 fuentes permanentes.

CHERA –SOT DE CHERA This Nature Park stretches over 6,451.17 hectares and is to be found in the municipalities of Chera and Sot de Chera in the province of Valencia. Home to the Region of Valencia’s ﬁrst geological park, it is a rugged mountainous area located in an enormous tectonic trench surrounded by mountain peaks, with movements of the earth’s crust of up to 600 metres. It is registered as a Site of Community Importance and its attractive landscapes include those created by the River Sot, the Buseo reservoir, the Barranco de la Hoz ravine and the highest peaks: Pico Ropé at 1,136 metres and Cinco Pinos at 1,171 metres. The typical Mediterranean woodland vegetation provides shelter for large birds of prey, as well as an important population of amphibians. It is estimated that there are over 200 permanent springs in this privileged spot.

RÍOS Sin lugar a dudas, los ríos de la Comunitat Valenciana son protagonistas de muchos paisajes de gran belleza. Las cuencas altas de los grandes ríos (Mijares, Palancia, Turia, Cabriel y Júcar) ofrecen espectaculares entornos discurriendo entre cortados, laderas y montañas mediterráneas. A su paso no solo encontraremos zonas de importantes masas forestales, sino también una fauna autóctona en muchas ocasiones. Los ríos son también lugar de encuentro de los amantes de los deportes acuáticos, pudiendo realizarse diversas actividades a lo largo de sus cuencas, así como la pesca, respetando los periodos de veda.

RIVERS The Region of Valencia’s rivers undoubtedly play a leading role in many extremely beautiful landscapes. The catchment areas of the major rivers (Mijares, Palancia, Turia, Cabriel and Júcar) flow through spectacular scenery consisting of gorges, cliffs and Mediterranean woodland. Their banks are home not only to extensive woodland but also to indigenous fauna in many cases. The rivers are also magnets for lovers of water sports, with a wide range of activities available throughout their length, as well as fishing in the permitted seasons.

EMBALSES Los embalses valencianos son espacios en la naturaleza creados por el hombre, de gran belleza, rodeados de una densa vegetación. Ofrecen enclaves idóneos como zonas recreativas. Permiten la realización de diferentes actividades, así como la práctica de deportes acuáticos. Podremos hacer piragüismo y kayak. Además, también tendremos la oportunidad de realizar excursiones en barco fluvial y de practicar la pesca deportiva.

RESERVOIRS The reservoirs of Valencia are beautiful man-made spaces in the midst of nature, surrounded by dense vegetation. They make ideal leisure spots, and are perfect for a range of activities, particularly water sports, such as canoeing and kayaking. Excursions on river boats are also possible, and the reservoirs provide some excellent ﬁshing opportunities.

Pantano Buseo - Chera

CASCADAS El otoño, la estación lluviosa, da inicio a la temporada en la que se puede contemplar la cara más espectacular de los ríos. Numerosas cascadas, torrenteras y saltos de agua, afloran ofreciendo impresionantes panorámicas hasta la llegada de la primavera. Podremos encontrarlas no solo en las cuencas de mayor relevancia o Parques naturales, sino también en diferentes enclaves a lo largo y ancho de nuestra geografía. Por citar algunas de ellas, disfrutaremos del Chorro del Salt en Mariola (Alicante), de la Cascada del Brazal o del Salto de la Novia (de 60 metros de altura) en Castellón y de las del río Bohigues en Valencia.

WATERFALLS AND CASCADES Autumn is the rainy season when you can start to enjoy the most spectacular face of our rivers. Countless waterfalls, cascades and mountain torrents come to life, an amazing sight that lasts until spring. As well as along the major rivers and in the nature parks, you can ﬁnd them in many places across the region. To mention just a few, we have the Chorro del Salt in Mariola (Alicante), the Cascada del Brazal and the Salto de la Novia (60 metres high) in Castellón and those along the River Bohigues in Valencia.

SENDERISMO Los recorridos a pie son la mejor forma para disfrutar y conocer al detalle la riqueza natural valenciana. Practicando el senderismo entraremos en contacto directo con la naturaleza y descubriremos de manera exhaustiva los rincones con más encanto, tanto por su vegetación y fauna típicamente mediterráneas como por su variada orografía. El visitante amante de esta actividad podrá elegir de una extensa red de senderos homologados, regidos por la normativa internacional que los clasifica en función de la distancia y la dificultad del recorrido. Seis senderos de Gran Recorrido (de más de 50 kilómetros) atraviesan nuestra Comunidad, sumando un total de 968,5 kilómetros de caminos señalizados, que forman parte de la Red Europea de Senderos. Estas rutas recorren las tres provincias, destacando el GR 7, que discurre a lo largo de las tres, de norte a sur. Pero, además, los amantes de esta actividad podrán disfrutar de una extensa nómina de trazados cortos. Más de 250 rutas a lo largo de nuestra geografía le esperan, catalogadas de Pequeño Recorrido (entre 10 y 50 kilómetros) y de Senderos Locales (menos de 10 kilómetros).

HIKING Walking is the best way of enjoying and learning more about the rich natural environment of Valencia. Hiking allows us to come into close contact with nature and discover the most delightful spots, both for their typically Mediterranean ﬂora and fauna and their varied relief. Hikers can choose from a dense network of waymarked paths, all complying with international standards classifying them by distance and diﬃculty. Six Long Distance Footpaths (abbreviated to GR) (over 50 kilometres) cross our Region, 968.5 kilometres of signposted routes that are part of the European Long Distance Footpath Network. These routes pass through all three provinces, especially the GR 7, which crosses all three from north to south. Apart from the above, lovers of hiking can also enjoy a vast number of short paths. Over 250 routes throughout the region are waiting for you, listed as Short Distance Footpaths (PR) (from 10 to 50 kilometres) and Local Footpaths (SL) (under 10 kilometres).

BTT Desde Alicante hasta Castellón, los practicantes de esta modalidad ciclista (BTT o mountain bike) contarán con una red de rutas perfectamente señalizadas y con una serie de servicios complementarios de equipamiento y de apoyo al uso de la bicicleta. Encontrarán una amplia variedad de rutas, cartografiadas y balizadas, diseñadas para todos los públicos con el objetivo de recorrer los espacios naturales más bellos y los lugares que cuentan con un rico patrimonio histórico y cultural. El desarrollo de nuevas modalidades de pesca no agresivas con las poblaciones de peces y el cuidado de estos cotos hace de la actividad piscícola un instrumento decisivo para la conservación sostenible con el disfrute del patrimonio natural valenciano. La pesca fluvial y lacustre es una competencia de la Generalitat Valenciana, que fija los periodos hábiles (calendario y horarios), así como las normas generales relacionadas con la pesca en aguas continentales (especies pescables, especies vedadas, tallas mínimas, uso de materiales…), con el fin de proteger la fauna ictiológica valenciana. Ejemplos de estas múltiples localizaciones son Forcall y Navajas en la provincia de Castellón; y Casas Bajas, Chera y Villargordo del Cabriel, en Valencia. En Villargordo se halla el pantano de Contreras, que cuenta con gran variedad de especies, como la carpa, el lucio, la anguila o la trucha común, entre otras.

FISHING Enjoy beautiful natural countryside that guarantees peace and quiet in idyllic settings, while enjoying this attractive sporting and recreational activity. Fishing is a way of getting to know and appreciating these habitats. The appearance of new types of fishing that do not deplete fish stocks and careful management has made fishing a vital tool for sustainable conservation that allows us to enjoy the natural heritage of Valencia. Fishing in lakes and rivers is controlled by the Valencian Regional Government, Generalitat Valenciana, which fixes the seasons (calendar and timetables), as well as the ground rules related to fishing in continental waters (species that can be fished, prohibited species, minimum sizes, materials that can be used, etc.), so as to protect Valencian fish species. There are countless places to fish, including Forcall and Navajas in the province of Castellón, as well as Casas Bajas, Chera and Villargordo del Cabriel in Valencia. At Villargordo, we find the Contreras reservoir, home to many species, such as carp, pike, eel and common trout amongst others.

RAFTING Aventura y diversión en una de las modalidades acuáticas de mayor demanda en los últimos años. Vence la bravura del río sin experiencia previa. Su popularidad le ha llevado a adaptarse a los diferentes tipos de demanda que recibe: se puede practicar rafting de iniciación, rafting familiar y rafting integral, así como rafting weel, para los más osados. Si bien el descenso en balsa neumática se lleva a cabo en diferentes ríos a lo largo y ancho de nuestra geografía, hay localizaciones donde se disfruta de un entorno natural privilegiado como el río Cabriel (Venta del Moro, Villargordo del Cabriel…), donde se disfruta de un descenso entre paredes de piedra; el río Mijares (Montanejos), o el Júcar, entre otros.

RAFTING Fun and adventure with one of the most popular water sports of recent years. Brave the raging river without previous experience. Its popularity has led to the development of different types of rafting: beginners, family and total rafting, not forgetting wheel rafting for the most daring. You can go rafting on many rivers all over the region, although there are certain especially attractive settings, such as the River Cabriel (Venta del Moro, Villargordo del Cabriel, etc.), where you float between rocky cliffs, the River Mijares (Montanejos) and the River Júcar, amongst others.

RUTA FLUVIAL Itinerario que recorre bellos espacios naturales navegando por el cañón del río Júcar. La primera ruta turística fluvial de la Comunitat Valenciana discurre por el embalse de Cortes, en el tramo comprendido entre Cofrentes y Cortes de Pallás (Valencia). Esta actividad organizada cuenta con las adecuadas condiciones de seguridad y de respeto al medio ambiente, y acerca al visitante a extraordinarios parajes de alto valor medioambiental. Una excursión que asegura espectaculares panorámicas. Entre las abruptas montañas de la Muela de Cortes, con vertiginosos acantilados y pequeñas playas en las riberas del embalse, se puede contemplar una vegetación típicamente mediterránea (pinos, carrascas…) y la fauna de la Reserva Nacional de Caza Mayor (cabras montesas, muflones…). Se completa las vistas con el rico patrimonio que ofrece el paraje: el Castillo de Chirel, bastión de resistencia morisca; la localidad de Cortés de Pallás, con su inconfundible cascada; y la población de Cofrentes con su castillo, rodeada de barrancos entre los ríos Júcar y Cabriel.

FLUVIAL ROUTE This inviting excursion passes through beautiful countryside while sailing through the River Júcar canyon. The first river route for tourists in the Region of Valencia crosses the Cortes reservoir between Cofrentes and Cortes de Pallás (Valencia). ERMITAS Y MONASTERIOS El patrimonio cultural valenciano cuenta con un importante número de ermitas y monasterios que el visitante encontrará diseminados por toda la geografía. Estas edificaciones de carácter religioso fueron uno de los legados más importantes de la época medieval. Gracias a la actividad de los monasterios valencianos se mantuvo vivo el cultivo de las artes y se llevó a cabo una intensa labor repobladora y de estabilización de los territorios, disputados en los choques entre las diferentes civilizaciones de estas tierras. Muchos de estos monasterios, mediante mecenazgos y donaciones, hicieron acopio de grandes obras de arte. En la actualidad, son formidables archivos documentales y muestran colecciones de arte sacro de gran valor. Las visitas a los Monasterios de Santa María de Simat de la Valldigna (Valencia), Santa María de Benifassà y de San Francisco de Morella (Castellón), al Palacio-Monasterio de Cocentaina (Alicante), y a los Monasterios de San Miguel de Llíria y de la Asunción de Xàtiva (Valencia), así como a las Cartujas de Vall de Cristo de Altura (Castellón) y de Portaceli en el término municipal de Serra (Valencia), entre muchas otras, darán cuenta al viajero de la importancia de este patrimonio cultural de carácter religioso.

HERMITAGES AND MONASTERIES The cultural heritage in the Region of Valencia includes a significant number of hermitages and monasteries dotted all across the land. These religious buildings are one of the most important legacies passed down from the Middle Ages. Thanks to the activity of monasteries in Valencia, the arts continued to be cultivated and areas were intensively repopulated and stabilised that had previously been subject to clashes between the different civilisations that settled in the region. Thanks to patronage and donations, many of these monasteries combined a wide range of architectural elements and styles, and came to house major works of art. Today, they constitute formidable documentary archives and display hugely valuable collections of sacred art. To discover the significance of this wealth of religious heritage, recommended sites to visit include the Monasteries of Santa María de Benifassà and of San Francisco de Morella (Castellón), the Palace-Monastery of Cocentaina (Alicante), and the Monasteries of San Miguel de Llíria and of the Asunción in Xàtiva (Valencia), as well as the Carthusian Monasteries of Vall de Cristo de Altura (Castellón) and of Portaceli in Serra (Valencia), amongst many others.

Monasterios de Santa MarĂa - Simat de la Valldigna

CENTROS HISTÓRICOS Adéntrate en el tiempo paseando por los centros urbanos valencianos, que guardan las huellas del paso de sus diferentes civilizaciones. Como primitivos núcleos poblacionales dan cobijo a los principales edificios de romanos, musulmanes y de los primeros cristianos. Encontrarás centros históricos con un trazado urbanístico de estilo árabe y medieval, caracterizado por un entramado de calles estrechas y pequeñas plazas, donde se dan cabida a las primeras iglesias, las antiguas Casas del Consell, las casas señoriales con sus escudos heráldicos… Es recomendable la visita a los centros urbanos de Llíria, Requena o Bocairent, entre muchos otros. Además, la planificación urbanística de antaño incluía la construcción de murallas que rodeaban y protegían a toda la población. De éstas quedan pocos elementos, dispersos por las calles de los cascos antiguos. Junto a estos lienzos, en muchos municipios se conservan torres, arcos y puertas del pasado amurallamiento. No obstante, hay lugares donde las murallas gozan de buena conservación, como es el caso de Morella o de Sant Mateu, declaradas estas últimas Bien de Interés Cultural.

HISTORIC CENTRES Step back into the past as you walk through Valencia's town centres, which still display the legacies left by their different civilisations. As the original centres of ancient settlements, they contain Roman, Muslim and early Christian buildings, all together. You will find town centres with Arab-style and medieval layouts, typified by narrow streets and little squares, which are home to early churches, former Town Halls, stately homes with their coats of arms... Recommended town centres include Llíria, Requena and Bocairent, among many others. The towns of yesteryear also included surrounding walls to protect the whole of the population. Little of these remain, and tend to be spread out among the streets of these historic centres. Many towns also still display ancient towers, arches and gates that formed part of these walls. However, there are also towns in which these walls have survived more or less intact, such as Morella and Sant Mateu, where the walls have been officially declared Cultural Assets.

ARTE RUPESTRE Una de las manifestaciones artísticas más antiguas de las que se tiene constancia presentes en el interior de la Comunitat Valenciana. Escenas de caza en las que se puede contemplar a grupos de arqueros lanzando flechas contra una amplia variedad de animales, siguiendo huellas o recogiendo a sus presas y la recolección de la miel son algunos de los dibujos que tras miles de años se pueden apreciar en el interior de las cuevas. Entre los ricos y bellos parajes naturales que dan cobijo a Bicorp (La Canal de Navarrés, Valencia) se conservan pinturas rupestres de fama mundial, que desde el año 1998 cuentan con la protección de la UNESCO. Millares, Dos Aguas, Quesa, Moixent, Enguera y Navarrés, todas ellas pertenecientes también al ámbito del Macizo del Caroig, cuentan con el privilegio de albergar en sus términos yacimientos arqueológicos con pinturas prehistóricas que han merecido la declaración de Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Aitana es, en la montaña alicantina, una de las zonas más profusas de la Comunitat Valenciana en manifestaciones de arte rupestre. Los vestigios encontrados allí también han sido catalogados como Patrimonio de la Humanidad. L’Alcoià, El Comtat, La Marina Alta y La Marina Baixa son las comarcas en las que se han encontrado un mayor número de muestras de este arte prehistórico.

CAVE ART Cave art is one of the most ancient types of artistic expression known in the inland areas of the Region of Valencia. Hunting scenes showing groups of archers shooting arrows at a wide range of animals, following tracks, collecting their prey and gathering honey are just some of the drawings that have endured for thousands of years inside the caves. They are generally found in rocky shelters and their excellent state of preservation and variety (we can identify three styles – Levantine, Macroschematic and Schematic) has allowed us to record and identify the evolution of cave art in the Region of Valencia. The beautiful sites around Bicorp (La Canal de Navarrés, Valencia) are home to world-famous examples of cave art, which came under the protection of UNESCO in 1998. Millares, Dos Aguas, Quesa, Moixent, Enguera and Navarrés are all located in the Macizo del Caroig mountains as well and they too have the privilege of having archaeological sites with prehistoric paintings that have been declared World Heritage Sites. Among the mountains of Alicante, Aitana is one of the areas with most cave paintings in the Region of Valencia. Indeed, the examples found there have also been declared World Heritage Sites. Most examples of this prehistoric art have been found in L’Alcoià, El Comtat, La Marina Alta and La Marina Baixa.

PATRIMONIO HISTÓRICO INDUSTRIAL La trayectoria industrial de la Comunitat Valenciana ha generado un rico patrimonio de construcciones fabriles, dedicadas a diversas actividades en el pasado (papel, calzado, metal, textil…), que se remontan a los siglos XIX y XX. Hoy estas fábricas empiezan a reconvertirse en museos. Además, cabe destacar que, en algunos casos, la industrialización condicionó el desarrollo de las ciudades, aglutinando las fábricas que se iban instalando en los cauces de los ríos. Siguiendo la estética del momento, la burguesía levantó bellos edificios modernistas en sus principales calles, dejando huella en diversas poblaciones, entre otras: Alcoy, Novelda, Onda, Ontinyent o Xàtiva. Algunos de los ejemplos más bellos de esta tendencia se encuentran a disposición de los visitantes en Novelda, cuenta con la Casa-Museo Modernista y el Santuario de Santa María Magdalena, inspirado en el templo de la Sagrada Familia de Gaudí en Barcelona; y Alcoy es una población incluida en la Ruta europea del modernismo, que comprende 57 ciudades, por edificios como la Casa del Pavo, el Círculo Industrial o la Casa Escaló, entre otros.

INDUSTRIAL HISTORIC HERITAGE Industrial development in the Region of Valencia has led to a rich and varied heritage of factory buildings dedicated to a variety of activities from the past (paper, footwear, metal, textile…) dating from the 19th and 20th centuries. Many of these factories are now being converted into museums. It is worth noting that in some cases, industrialisation inﬂuenced how towns and cities developed, as factories appeared one after the other along river banks. During this industrial make-over, the bourgeoisie of the time commissioned beautiful modernist buildings on the town's main streets leaving its mark in various populations including: Alcoy, Novelda, Onda, Ontinyent and Xàtiva. Visitors can ﬁnd some of the most stunning examples of this tendency in: Novelda which is home to the Modernist Museum-House and the Shrine to the saint Santa María Magdalena which took its inspiration from the Sagrada Familia by Gaudí in Barcelona; and Alcoy, for example, forms part of the European Modernism Route, which takes in 57 cities via buildings such as the Casa del Pavo, Círculo Industrial, and Casa Escaló, amongst others.

MUSEOS DE ARTE La Comunitat Valenciana, cuna de muchos artistas a lo largo del tiempo, tiene una sensibilidad especial de cara al arte. Porque como componente cultural establece una comunicación única, inherente a cualquier cultura humana y cualquier espacio o tiempo. Los citados a continuación son una muestra de la extensa nómina que el visitante encontrará en estas tierras. Albaida. Casa-Museo Jose Segrelles. En sus estancias se exhiben más de 150 obras originales del pintor, entre las que destacan las ilustraciones para las novelas de Vicente Blasco Ibañez, entre otras. Requena. Museo de arte contemporáneo Florencio de la Fuente. Una selección de 90 obras de las 368 donadas a Requena se exhiben en la casa solariega de los Gil Fagoaga. Serigrafías y litografías, de Picasso, Miró, Dalí; y originales de Antoni Tàpies entre otros. Vilafamés. Museo de arte contemporáneo. Fue fundado en 1960 e instalado en la Casa del Batlle, un caserón del siglo XV. En él pueden contemplarse obras de los más afamados pintores contemporáneos españoles: Chillida, Miró, Cuixart, Canogar...

ART MUSEUMS The Region of Valencia, birthplace of many artists over the centuries, has a special sensibility when it comes to art, establishing a unique communication that is inherent to any human culture, and to any place or time. The museums listed here are just a few of the examples of what you can ﬁnd in this region. Albaida. José Segrelles Museum House. More than 150 original paintings by the artist are on display, including his illustrations for the novels of Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, among others. Requena. MUSEOS TEMÁTICOS Estos centros culturales ofrecen la posibilidad de profundizar en campos mucho más heterogéneos de la sociedad valenciana, desde las tradiciones milenarias de producción del vino y del turrón hasta los entresijos de las diferentes fiestas, entre muchos otros. Aielo de Malferit. Casa-Museo Nino Bravo. Es un espacio dedicado a mantener viva la memoria de Nino Bravo. La Colección Museográfica Permanente Universo Nino aglutina un número importante de objetos personales y profesionales cedidos por la familia, los fans y amigos de Nino Bravo. Ibi. Museo del juguete. Reúne una variada muestra de 444 juguetes, ordenados siguiendo el hilo argumental que se apoya en los entornos o ambientes figurativos que los propios juguetes representan. Banyeres. Museu fester. Construido a principios del siglo XIII, en época almohade, sobre un espolón rocoso. Dividido en tres plantas cubiertas por bóvedas de medio cañón. El edificio alberga una muestra representativa de los trajes y tradiciones que rodean el mundo de la fiesta.

Aielo de Malferit. Nino Bravo Museum House. This museum keeps alive the memory of the great singer Nino Bravo. The Universo Nino Permanent Collection includes a large number of personal and professional objects granted by the family, fans and friends of Nino Bravo. Ibi. Toy Museum. Built in the early 13th century during the Almohad period, on a rocky outcrop. Museo del Juguete - Ibi

MUSEOS ETNOLÓGICOS En un viaje a través del tiempo, observarás la esencia más pura de los valencianos y la herencia más tradicional en aquellas actividades transmitidas de padres a hijos durante siglos. Los aquí incluidos son ejemplos de las diferentes tipologías que se pueden encontrar. Cocentaina. Centre d’Estudis Contestans. Se pueden contemplar diversos aperos de labranza y útiles y herramientas para la vida doméstica. A través de sistemas audiovisuales y paneles explicativos profundizaremos en el proceso de elaboración tradicional del vino, aceite y harina. Vilafranca. Museu de la Pedra en Sec. Permite conocer la rica técnica de la piedra en seco que forma parte del patrimonio de Vilafranca gracias a herramientas, paneles, maquetas, recreaciones y audiovisuales. Xàtiva. Col•legiata, ermita de Sant Feliu y Museu de l’Almodí. Por una parte el antiguo Almudín renacentista y el edificio del antiguo Peso Real reformado en 1818. El museo expone piezas de arqueología de época íbera, romana, visigoda, islámica y cristiana, además de colecciones de bellas artes.

Discover the fascinating technique of dry stone construction that forms part of the heritage of Vilafranca, with tools, panels, models, recreations and audiovisual explanations. Xàtiva. Collegiate church, hermitage of San Feliu and l’Almodí Museum. Museu de la Pedra en Sec - Vilafranca

MUSEOS ARQUEOLÓGICOS Descubre cuál fue el perfil de nuestros primeros pobladores a partir de sus numerosos restos hallados en estas tierras. Los de Alcoy y Villena son una reproducción de la vida de los antiguos pobladores a través de una extensa muestra cronológica de todo aquello procedente de los yacimientos. El museo de Tírig descubre al visitante la riqueza del Arte Rupestre valenciano, con estilos propios dentro del Arte Rupestre del Arco Mediterráneo de la Península Ibérica. Alcoy. Museo Arqueológico Municipal “Camil Visedo Moltó”. Ubicado en la antigua Casa de la Villa, uno de los edificios más notorios del núcleo histórico. La exposición museográfica permanente presenta la selección desde época prehistórica. Villena. Museo Arqueológico José Mª Soler. En el se encuentra el llamado Tesoro de Villena. Los fondos permiten establecer un recorrido histórico de la comarca del Alto Vinalopó, desde el Paleolítico hasta el siglo XX. Tírig. Museu de la Valltorta. El Museu de la Valltorta actúa como centro de acogida del visitante. Se trata de un centro creado para la conservación, estudio y divulgación de los valores del Arte Rupestre de la Comunitat Valenciana.

ARCHAEOLOGY MUSEUMS Discover the history of the first settlers in the region from the various remains found in the area. The museums in Alcoy and Villena reproduce the lives of the first settlers with a chronological display of all the finds uncovered at the various sites. The Tírig museum shows the wealth of Cave Art in the region, with styles from the Mediterranean Arch of the Iberian Peninsula. Alcoy. “Camil Visedo Moltó” Municipal Archaeology Museum. Located in the former Town Hall, one of the most notable buildings in the town's centre. The museum features a permanent display of items dating from pre-historic times. Villena. José María Soler Archaeology Museum. This museum is home to what is known as the Villena Treasure. The items on display take you on a historical tour of the Alto Vinalopó district, from the Palaeolithic era to the 20th century. Tírig. Valltorta Museum. The Valltorta Museum is a visitor centre created to preserve, study and disseminate the value of the Cave Art that exists in the Region of Valencia.

Museo Arqueológico “Camil Visedo” - Alcoy

RUTAS CULTURALES Las rutas culturales son una oportunidad para descubrir parte del patrimonio histórico mientras se goza de la naturaleza. La Ruta de los Monasterios comprende cinco puntos de interés: el Monasterio de San Jerónimo de Cotalba, el Convento del Corpus Christi, el Monasterio de la Valldigna, el Convento de Aigües Vives y el Monasterio de la Murta. Todos ellos son visitables menos el de Aigües Vives. El trazado se puede realizar a pie por un tramo de la senda GR-236, perfectamente señalizada, y en coche. Cuatro recorridos se adentran en el interior de la Comunitat Valenciana, pudiéndose llevar a cabo por senderos o en coche. “La conquista de Valencia” pasa por Montanejos y Segorbe. En “La defensa del Sur” atraviesa, entre otras, las poblaciones de Alzira, Xátiva, Ontinyent, Banyeres de Mariola, Biar y Villena . CULTURAL ROUTES Cultural routes provide an opportunity to discover part of a place’s historic heritage whilst enjoying nature at the same time. The Route of the Monasteries covers ﬁve places of interest: the monasteries of San Jerónimo in Cotalba, Corpus Christi, La Valldigna, Aigües Vives and La Murta. Visitors are allowed inside all of them except Aigües Vives. The route can be walked using the GR-236 footpath, which is clearly signposted, or completed by car. D.O. ALIMENTACIÓN: PRODUCTOS TÍPICOS TRADICIONALES Un tesoro gastronómico representado por alimentos tradicionales, fruto de una agricultura sostenible y respetuosa con el medio ambiente añadido a los procedimientos artesanos da como resultado que el interior de la Comunitat Valenciana ostente cuatro denominaciones de origen protegidas, que la identifican en todo el mundo. El turrón de Jijona, conocido, admirado y saboreado en todo el mundo. La uva de mesa embolsada del Vinalopó, es la única uva de mesa que posee una D.O. Las cerezas de la Montaña de Alicante, ostentan este honor desde el año 1988. Las bebidas espirituosas tradicionales de Alicante utilizan hierbas autóctonas de la Sierra de Mariola unidas a las materias primas de mayor calidad para su producción (Anís Paloma de Monforte del Cid, Aperitivo Café de Alcoy, Cantueso Alicantino y Herbero de la Serra de Mariola). Otros productos que por su notable calidad conviene destacar son: el embutido artesano de Requena, los nísperos de Callosa, las trufas negras del Maestrazgo de Castellón, la miel de la Marina Alta y los aceites de oliva de la sierra de Espadán.

DENOMINATION OF ORIGIN FOOD AND DRINK: TYPICAL TRADITIONAL PRODUCTS A gastronomic treasure house represented by traditional food and drink, fruit of sustainable, environmentally-friendly architecture, combined with traditional methods means that the inland areas of the Region of Valencia boasts four protected denominations of origin that identify it all around the world. The turrón (nougat) from Jijona is recognised, admired and enjoyed worldwide. The Vinalopó bagged table grapes are the only grapes with a Denomination of Origin. The cherries from the Mountains of Alicante were awarded this honour in 1988. Traditional Alicante Spirit Drinks are made with herbs gathered from the Sierra de Mariola mountains and combined with top-quality raw materials (Anís Paloma from Monforte del Cid, the Coﬀee Aperitif from Alcoy, Cantueso Alicantino and Herbero from the Sierra de Mariola mountains). The many other products that stand out for their excellent quality include: Requena’s traditional sausage, the loquats from Callosa, the black truﬄes from Castellón’s Maestrazgo region, honey from the Marina Alta and olive oil from the Sierra de Espadán mountains. 114 Gastronomía

ENOLOGÍA El clima mediterráneo confiere a la uva y, posteriormente, a los vinos de la Comunitat Valenciana un carácter propio, con todas las características de los mejores vinos que les hace gozar de gran prestigio y popularidad a nivel internacional. Las tres denominaciones de origen, que regulan la calidad del vino (Alicante, Utiel-Requena y Valencia) suponen un amplio catálogo de posibilidades para disfrutar de nuestra enología: vinos blancos, rosados, tintos, dulces y cavas. La D.O. Alicante destaca por su producción de unos vinos muy frutales y blancos secos o dulces. La D.O. Utiel-Requena se están obteniendo vinos rosados equilibrados y frescos, y tintos muy bien estructurados, sabrosos y elegantes. La D.O. Valencia da lugar a blancos, rosados y tintos muy agradables Visitar alguno de los museos dedicados al vino resulta muy interesante para adentrarse en el conocimiento de esta tradición milenaria. Se pueden contemplar las distintas marcas de nuestras D.O. y los utensilios empleados en la elaboración del vino a lo largo de los años. RUTA DEL VINO FERIAS TEMÁTICAS GASTRONÓMICAS Adéntrate en la cultura del vino, degústalo de mano de los bodegueros más expertos, descubre el patrimonio, pasea por su naturaleza y conoce la forma de vida en las zonas que se dedican al cultivo del viñedo. Son propuestas de las diferentes rutas del vino, durante una jornada o un fin de semana. La Asociación Ruta del Vino de la Denominación de Origen Utiel-Requena ha puesto en marcha unos circuitos de enoturismo que facilitan todas las gestiones al viajero. Diversos lugares de la región organizan ferias gastronómicas donde poder disfrutar de la tradición alimentaria valenciana. En la Muestra de Embutido Artesano y de Calidad de Requena los amantes del buen comer podrán degustar embutidos curados, bollos con magras, platos típicos y sus famosos vinos. Otros eventos de esta índole destacables son el que organiza Utiel, con su Ruta del Tapeo; la Feria de Navidad de Jijona, de turrones y dulces navideños; y la Feria Gastronómica de la Vall d’Albaida, que se lleva a cabo en Ontinyent.

The various wine routes make for a superb day out or weekend away. The Utiel-Requena Denomination of Origin Wine Route Association has implemented a series of routes for wine lovers with everything provided for. Various areas in the region organise gastronomic fairs where visitors can enjoy a range of traditional Valencian food and wine. At the Requena Quality Artisan Sausage Festival, lovers of good food can sample cured meats, ham buns, other traditional dishes and the famous local wines. Other similar events include the Tapas Route in Utiel, the Christmas Fair in Jijona, with delicious nougat turrón and other seasonal delicacies, and the Gastronomic Fair of the Vall d’Albaida in Ontinyent.

LA SEMANA SANTA DE CREVILLENT En Semana Santa, Crevillent (Alicante) celebra su fiesta grande, de Interés Turístico Nacional, cuyos orígenes parecen atestiguarse ya en el siglo XVII. Religión, arte, tradición, se funden en una expresión popular viva y dinámica. La noche del Martes Santo es el punto de inicio de un serie de procesiones, en las que las diferentes cofradías y el público llenan las calles para vivir el paso del Santísimo Cristo de Difuntos y Ánimas al son de los tambores. Pero en la madrugada del Viernes Santo, las rondallas y bandas de cornetas con sus populares "dianas" marcan el inicio del día festivo más importante. Al amanecer tiene lugar el acto más arraigado por los crevillentinos: el abrazo entre la madre y el hijo durante la procesión de Camino del Calvario. Con el atardecer, llega la Procesión de la Muerte de Cristo, quizás la más espectacular de todas. Los pasos del escultor Mariano Benlliure jalonan tramo a tramo las calles del centro, invadidas por un absoluto silencio, sólo roto por motetes y cantos de la pasión interpretados por las corales de la localidad.

HOLY WEEK IN CREVILLENT Holy Week sees Crevillent (Alicante) holding its keynote festival, declared to be of National Tourist Interest, with evidence pointing to it having first been held in the 17th century. Religion, art and tradition blend together in a lively and dynamic event. The night of Holy Tuesday sees the start of a series of processions, where different religious brotherhoods and the general public fill the streets to experience the procession of the Santísimo Cristo de Difuntos y Ánimas image to the sound of drums. In the early hours of Good Friday, groups of serenaders and trumpeters with their popular "dianas" or reveilles signal the start of the most important festival day. The most deeply-felt act of the local population (los crevillentinos) takes place at dawn: the embrace between mother and son during the Calvary Procession. At nightfall, the Procession of the Death of Christ takes centre stage, this being perhaps the most spectacular of all. The floats created by the sculptor Mariano Benlliure mark the different stages along the streets in the town centre, accompanied by the most absolute silence, only broken by the motets and chants sung by local choirs.

LA PEREGRINACIÓN DE LES USERES En el municipio de Les Useres, en la comarca de El Alcalatén (Castellón), el último viernes del mes de abril se celebra una singular procesión penitencial en la que participan los vecinos de la población. Es una tradición muy arraigada, que pervive sin cambios desde el siglo XIV. El camino de los Peregrinos de Les Useres es un recorrido de unos 35 kilómetros, con un desnivel de más de 1.000 metros. Suben desde Les Useres hasta el santuario de San Juan de Penyagolosa, situado en el parque natural del mismo nombre, donde celebran el verdadero ritual de los peregrinos, la causa última de la peregrinación, la “Ceremonia del Perdón”. La peregrinación se hace en estricto silencio, con el único acompañamiento de un grupo de cantores que entonan antiguas melodías tradicionales. Al paso de la procesión, los vecinos barren y adornan la senda de flores y hojas verdes para homenajear a los trece peregrinos (que representan a Jesucristo y sus apóstoles) y al complejo séquito.

THE PILGRIMAGE OF LES USERES Les Useres is the town in the El Alcalatén region of Castellón where on the last Friday of April the residents march in a unique penitential procession. This deep-rooted tradition has come to our days unchanged since the 14th century. The Les Useres Pilgrims’ Route is some 35 kilometres long and rises over 1,000 metres. The faithful walk from Les Useres to the sanctuary of San Juan de Penyagolosa in the nature park of the same name and hold “The Ceremony of Forgiveness”, the true pilgrim’s ritual and purpose of the pilgrimage. The pilgrimage takes place in strict silence, only accompanied by a group singing old, traditional melodies. When the procession passes by, the locals sweep the track and decorate it with ﬂowers and green leaves to pay tribute to the thirteen pilgrims (representing Jesus and the apostles) and their retinue.

FOGUERES DE SANT ANTONI DE CANALS Entorno al 17 de enero, día de San Antonio Abad, tienen lugar en Canals (Valencia) las hogueras en su honor. El visitante podrá disfrutar de unos días en los que cobran protagonismo el fuego, las bendiciones de los animales domésticos y actos tradicionales de gran arraigo. Su origen nos remonta al año 1748, en el que un fuerte terremoto asoló muchas de las poblaciones vecinas, sin afectar en absoluto a Canals. Los canalenses atribuyeron esta protección ante el peligro a San Antonio Abad, convirtiéndolo a partir de entonces en su patrón. Sus hogueras son de las más espectaculares de cuántas se levantan a lo largo de la geografía valenciana en honor al santo. Desde primeros de enero, la población alza, una impresionante pira cónica de aproximadamente 20 metros de altura y 12 de diámetro en su base, coronada con ramas de naranjo y revestida de pino. Pero además de la hoguera, otros actos populares se dan cita en Canals. Destacan la procesión que se celebra al día siguiente de la “cremà” de la hoguera y también las cabalgatas infantiles de las Carrozas y Comparsas. Las fiestas acaban con la Festa dels Parells y la bendición de los animales.

FOGUERES DE SANT ANTONI DE CANALS Around 17th January, the feast day of San Antonio Abad, the town of Canals in Valencia organises bonfires in his honour. These festivities consist of celebrations involving, the blessing of pets and other deeply rooted traditions. The origin of this celebration dates from 1748, when a violent earthquake devastated many of the neighbouring towns, but left Canals completely unaffected. The people of Canals claimed that they had been protected by San Antonio Abad, who was thus declared the town's patron saint. The bonfires in Canals are the most spectacular to be found throughout the Region of Valencia in honour of this particular saint. From early January the locals build a huge cone-shaped bonfire, measuring 20 metres high and 12 metres in diameter, topped with orange branches and covered in pine. However, the bonfire is not the only popular attraction of the festivities in Canals. There is also the procession held on the day after the bonfire burning, “la cremà”, and children's parades with floats and music. The festivities end with the parade known as Festa dels Parells and the blessing of pets.

MOROS Y CRISTIANOS DE ALCOY Una de las expresiones más espectaculares de las fiestas de “Moros y Cristianos” se produce en Alcoy, durante los días 22, 23 y 24 de abril. Declaradas de Interés Turístico Internacional, se rememoran unos hechos acaecidos en el siglo XIII, en tiempos de Jaime I el Conquistador, cuando la ciudad sufrió el ataque de las tropas sarracenas del sublevado Al-Azraq y, según la leyenda, San Jorge apareció cabalgando para ayudarla. La población juró construir un templo en su honor y celebrarlo con festejos. La primera referencia documental es de 1672, en la que un cronista local las describe como “festejos religiosos y populares”, señalando, además, la aparición de las compañías (filaes), una de cada bando. En estos días Alcoy es una auténtica explosión de alegría. Miles de banderas blancas con la cruz de San Jorge y otros tantos gallardetes verdes con la media luna del Islam engalanan la ciudad. Se enlazan dianas, procesiones, entradas y alardos, escenificando la toma del castillo por el bando “Moro” y la reconquista por el bando “Cristiano”.

MOORS AND CHRISTIANS IN ALCOY One of the most spectacular examples of the “Moors and Christians” festival takes place in Alcoy from April 22nd-24th. Officially recognised as being of International Tourist Interest, they commemorate events that took place during the 13th century in the times of Jaime I el Conquistador (known as the Conqueror), when the town was attacked by the Saracen troops of the rebellious Al-Azraq and legend claims that San Jorge appeared riding to help. The inhabitants promised to build a church in his honour and celebrate the event with festivals. The first written record dates back to 1672, when a local chronicler describes them as “religious and popular festivities”, also mentioning the appearance of the companies (filaes), one for each of the opposing groups. During the festival, Alcoy literally explodes with joy. Thousands of white flags with the cross of the saint San Jorge, matched by the green pennants bearing the crescent moon of Islam decorate the town. There is a constant succession of reveilles, processions, triumphal entrances and proclamations, portraying the taking of the castle by the “Moors” and its reconquest by the “Christians”.

ENTRADA DE TOROS Y CABALLOS DE SEGORBE La popular Entrada de Toros y Caballos de Segorbe (Castellón) tiene lugar durante la segunda semana de septiembre, de lunes a domingo y a las dos de la tarde. Declarada de Interés Turístico Internacional, data de la centuria del 1300, pero su verdadero origen podría remontarse tiempo atrás, cuando se llevaban los astados desde los corrales a la plaza. Hay que reconocer que de su origen no hay muchos datos y la explicación es lógica porque la entrada se ha considerado siempre como un complemento al día de toros en su conjunto. Conserva todas las peculiaridades que sus creadores le supieron imprimir. Especialmente, la referidas a la emoción y el riesgo que conlleva este magnífico espectáculo, en el que la manada de toros es arropada y guiada a través de la calle Colón por una decena de diestros y valientes jinetes. Son testigos una multitud de personas, que forman una muralla a lo largo y ancho del recorrido, convirtiendo en estos días la capital del Alto Palancia en una ciudad cada vez más visitada por turistas y aficionados al toro.

BULL AND HORSE DROVING IN SEGORBE The popular Bull and Horse Droving in Segorbe (Castellón) takes place at 2 p.m. from Monday to Sunday in the second week of September. The event has been officially recognised as being of International Tourist Interest and dates back to the 14th century, although its real origins may lie much further back, when the bulls were brought from their pens to the bullring. It’s true that we haven’t got much information about its origins and this is a logical explanation because the event has always been seen as a complement to the day’s bullfighting. It still has the unique charm that its creators instilled it with, especially when we talk about the excitement and risk involved in this magnificent spectacle, where the herd of bulls is surrounded by ten skilled riders who bravely guide the animals along the Calle Colón. The whole procedure is witnessed by a large crowd that lines the street, making the capital of the Alto Palancia region one of the most-visited towns for both tourists and lovers of bullfighting.

LA TOMATINA DE BUÑOL La fiesta más participativa y reciente, que atrae a visitantes de todo el mundo, se da cita en Buñol, provincia de Valencia, el último miércoles del mes de agosto. Invita a pasar una hora de risas y tomatazos. Los orígenes de esta fiesta se remontan al año 1945, cuando unos jóvenes decidieron hacerse un hueco dentro de la comitiva de un desfile con músicos, gigantes y cabezudos. El ímpetu de los jóvenes hizo que cayera un participante que, presa de la ira, empezó a golpear todo lo que encontraba a su paso. Por capricho del destino, allí había un puesto de verduras que fue pasto de la multitud enfurecida: la gente empezó a tirarse tomates unos a otros hasta que las fuerzas del orden público pusieron fin a aquella batalla vegetal. Al año siguiente, los jóvenes repitieron el altercado de forma voluntaria y llevaron los tomates de su casa. Aunque la policía disolvió en sucesivos años la reciente tradición, los chicos habían hecho historia (www.latomatina.es). Fiesta considerada de Interés Turístico Internacional, hoy en día 45.000 personas participan en la “batalla” donde se lanzan 125 toneladas de tomates. Para participar sólo hay que acercarse a Buñol, eso sí, no es conveniente llevar ropa que quieras volver a ponerte.

LA TOMATINA IN BUÑOL This, the most participation-based and recent of festivals draws visitors from all over the world to Buñol in the province of Valencia on the last Wednesday in August, for a bout of tomato-chucking fun and games. The festival dates from 1945, when a few youngsters decided to interrupt a procession of musicians, giants and other carnival ﬁgures. The group's antics caused one of the participants to fall and, in a moment of rage, began to hit out at everything in his way. As luck would have it, a vegetable stall provided the ammunition for the crowd's fury: people began to throw tomatoes at each other until the police moved in to put an end to their food ﬁght. The next year, however, the youngsters returned to repeat the episode voluntarily, taking tomatoes from their homes. Even though for several years the police broke up the recently created tradition, the boys had made history (www.latomatina.es). Considered an International Tourist Asset, the festival now attracts 45 thousand people every year, all eager to battle it out with 125 tonnes of tomatoes. To take part, all you have to do is head for Buñol. We just wouldn't recommend you wearing any clothes that you'd like to use again.
