Day-to-day life is full of revelations, some good and others bad. When bad situations arise, an Airman’s attention to detail on the ground is imperative to save a life in the air. The 86th Operations Support Squadron aircrew flight equipment Airmen support the 76th Airlift Squadron and the 37th Airlift Squadron aircrew with up-keeping, testing, inspecting and educating aircrew members on all flight equipment. They ensure the aircrew’s gear is fully operational for everyday and emergency conditions. “Aircrew members have to trust that in case they need to bail out, the equipment works.” said Airman 1st Class Yasmine Mills, 86th Operations Support Squadron aircrew flight equipment apprentice. “If an emergency ever happens, they pretty much put their life in our hands.” The AFE Airmen manage a variety of equipment to include radios, parachutes, life preserves, survival kits, See PREPARED, Page 2

Fall cleanup will take place Tuesday and Wednesday by Tech. Sgt. Kory Peterson 786th Civil Engineer Squadron As we approach our fall cleanup, take a moment to reflect on why we work together to accomplish the Base Pride Plan. We dedicate time to clean where we work and clean where we live to make a happier and healthier you. In fact, the environments where we work and live greatly influence our health, attitude and productivity. The smallest of courtesies such as emptying the trash, sweeping the floors and dusting the office can play a big part in reducing asthma, allergies, colds and the flu. By working together, we can make a dramatic impact on the places we see every day. This is why the 86th Airlift Wing and U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz are setting aside Tuesday and Wednesday

to focus on improving the KMC. Tuesday is for cleaning administrative and industrial facilities, grounds and common areas across the KMC by facility managers and building occupants. Objectives for this day include litter collecting, weed pulling, trimming overgrown shrubs, tidying plant beds, removing tree limbs and pine cones, and raking and bagging leaves and placing debris into biodegradable bags. Interior suggestions include cleaning stairwells, entries, carpets, cleaning out storage rooms, purging old files, washing windows and even doing some minor touch-up painting. The unit areas-of-responsibility are published in Ramstein AB Instruction 36-2901. To help get this work done, facility managers may go to the U-Fix-It store to check out tools, weed eat-

ers, hedge trimmers, power washers, rakes, shovels and more. The KMC U-Fix-It store is located on Ramstein, Bldg. 505. Store hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and can be reached at 480-5034. Wednesday is for cleaning military housing exteriors. Goals for this day include weeding, trimming, raking, bagging and placing debris into biodegradable bags. Remember to include common areas such as playgrounds, walkways and areas around the underground trash containers. Participation is mandatory for housing residents, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun working in groups to make your community better. To assist residents, the KMC SelfHelp stores have a variety of equipment, tools, grass seed, biodegradable bags and other materials avail-

able. The KMC Housing Self-Help stores are located on Ramstein in Bldg. 859 and can be reached at 06371-46-39520 and on Vogelweh in Bldg. 1070 and can be reached at 0631-357-90915. The 786th Civil Engineer Squadron will provide curbside pickup for tree limbs, branches, leaves, weeds and bulk trash items. To facilitate composting, place weeds and leaves in biodegradable bags while separating branches into two piles — one pile for small stems up to 4 inches in diameter and another pile for larger material. Nonbiodegradable items should be properly sorted and disposed of in garbage dumpsters. Items such as batteries, glass, bulk paper and metal must be taken to the nearest recycling center: Bldg. 5146 on Ramstein or Bldg. 2820 on Kapaun.

Haven Asche 86 OSS NCO in charge. “We have a lot of small attention to detail items.” Every stitch sewn and number documented is essential to prepping each piece of gear for a potential bad day. “(While repacking) parachutes, missing one tacking (could lead to) someone losing their life,” Mills said. “Attention to detail is everything.” Throughout different areas of the shop, AFE Airmen focus either in solitude or with music, to diligently work on various pieces. Troubleshooting each piece offers its own set of challenges. “Sometimes you have a perfect piece of equipment to inspect, sometimes it’s more intricate,” Asche said. “It’s not monotonous at all; it’s never the exact same thing.” The detail-oriented Airmen perform mission-termination inspections daily with more thorough assessments monthly and annually. “We’re trying our best.” Mills said.

jobs nobody realizes what you do until something goes wrong. But, if you did your job right, a life is saved.” As aircrew members continue to aim for mission excellence thousands of feet up in the air, AFE Airmen will continue to do their best to prepare for the worst while on the ground.

Waters 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Walking outside and seeing clouds or an incoming storm can incite different reactions. Some dread the stormy weather, while others enjoy it. Sometimes the weather isn’t always an important part of a particular mission, so people won’t think too much about a storm. Airmen assigned to the 21st Operational Weather Squadron are constantly watching the weather to ensure service members within the U.S. European Command and the U.S. Africa Command can perform their duties in spite of the conditions. “Our responsibility is to characterize the environment for our customer in conjunction with resource protection, forecasting and flight weather briefs,” said Senior Master Sgt. Jacob Arfa, squadron operations superintendent. “This is so that our customers can take that information and exploit it in the execution of a mission.” One of the squadron’s missions is to ensure that aircrews know the weather conditions or any other possible weather related hazards. When a pilot submits a request for a flight weather brief, ground sensing stations that are only found at airports and military installations sense and record all atmospheric conditions, such as temperature, air pressure and wind speeds. From the moment a pilot leaves the ground to landing at their final destinations, the weather conditions can greatly affect their mission. Each report is speVOTING, from Page 1

The Airmen at the 21 OWS are no strangers to teamwork, as the wingman concept is often ingrained into every one of us. But the Airmen also have an opportunity others may not get to experience; teamwork between military branches. For the past 11 years, the squadron has worked side by side with the U.S. Navy Fleet Weather Center Aviation Detachment. Sharing the same equipment and professionalism between the two branches has only improved the unit’s efficiency. “The professional development that

DOD GTCC policy

Department of Defense policy is that the Government Travel Charge Card will be used by all DOD personnel to pay for all costs related to official government travel. Official travel is defined as “travel under official orders while performing duties pertaining to official government assignments such as temporary duty and permanent change of station.” Members are not authorized to use the Central Billing Account unless they are DOD personnel who have an application pending for the travel card, individuals traveling on an invitational travel order or authorization, and new appointees or recruits. US Consular Outreach Day

Senior NCOs mentor, develop junior officers

Pike 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs A recent mentoring luncheon held Oct. 5 at the Ramstein Officers’ Club on Ramstein gave senior noncommissioned officers a chance to teach company grade officers about the structure of the enlisted corps and leadership. “As senior NCOs, we are charged with mentoring and developing our company grade officers into leaders,” said Senior Master Sgt. Willie Frazier, 1st Communications Maintenance Squadron superintendent. “This luncheon helps us to do that.” While senior NCOs are responsible

for mentoring the junior officers, company grade officers are responsible for learning from them to develop themselves. “Commissioned officers are charged with executing the mission effectively and efficiently and we cannot do it without (learning from) our enlisted force,” said Capt. Lori Wilhelm, 86th Military Personnel Flight commander. During the luncheon, officers were free to choose any topics they felt were necessary, but the two main topics were enlisted performance reports and the enlisted force distribution panel. “At my last base, I had to fight for my noncommissioned officer at the

Thanks to my senior NCO who helped prepare me and gave me talking points, when it got to me I was able to rattle off everything she had done the previous year.” Because of Wilhelm’s senior NCO co-worker mentoring and preparing her for the meeting, her NCO ended up getting the “promote now” statement at the wing level. “Had it not been for the guidance from a senior NCO I may not have known either,” Wilhelm said. This way, the retirees don’t have to make sepa rate trips to each place.” Shelton said, as a retiree who now works to help other retirees in the community, she knows events like this are important. “This event is important to me because I am a retiree,” Shelton said. “This gives all of us the opportunity to come together and see how every one is doing. I get to see people I love to see, but don’t see often. It’s a good social event and is a lot of fun.” The retiree population has served honorably in the military, so it’s time to give back to them, said 1st Lt. Lauren Kram, 76th Airlift Squadron C21 pilot and Retiree Appreciation Day assistant project officer. “The retirees have all served their country just as we are now, and it’s really important for them to know they aren’t forgotten and we want to provide our support,” Kram said. “We were able to sit down and talk with them during breakfast and heard their stories. Ramstein’s religious support teams — one chaplain and one chaplain assistant — are on standby to assist Airmen in crisis, who need religious support, or who just want to talk things out without fear of retribution. “We’re here for the Airmen,” said Capt. Sharior Rahman, 86th Airlift Wing chaplain. “I have atheists that come to me for counseling; I also have Buddhists, Christians, Muslims — a wide range. Now, I may be a pastor, an imam, a priest or a rabbi just to my faith group, but I am a chaplain to all.” Chaplains are bound by a policy of 100 percent confidentiality, which benefits Airmen and their families who may not want anyone else to know what they are going through. Even when chaplains conduct their unit visitations, they cannot report specific incidents or specific people to the unit commander; they can only give general information to the commander, Rahman added. “We do a lot of visitations, but we also advise leadership,” Rahman said. “We make it a point to get on

Screenings and self-exams key to early detection by Capt. Laura Segovia 86th Medical Squadron October is breast cancer awareness month. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the United States, second only to skin cancer. Overall, females have a one in eight lifetime risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer. The mortality rates have dramatically declined since 1989 due to early detection and improvements in treatments. There are many factors that influence a woman’s risk for developing breast cancer, some of which include: age, family history, and age at time of first childbirth. According to the American Cancer Society, breast selfawareness is important for every woman. This ensures women are familiar with

the normal appearance and feel of their breasts. Breast self-awareness is part of the screening process which helps women discern when to be seen for an abnormal finding. All professional organizations agree that the best screening method to detect breast cancer is mammography, which is one of the methods used at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. At this time, LRMC utilizes digital mammography, which stores the image on the computer for radiologist to review. The decision of when to start screening, the frequency of screening and discontinuation of screening should be done through a shared decision making process incorporating the individual’s background and preferences while weighing the risks

and benefits of screening, according to American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, 2016. Woman who are over 40 with no breast-related problems or family history of breast cancer can self-refer themselves for a mammogram by calling the Mammogram Hotline at LRMC at 590-6331. An experienced specialist will provide initial screening with a variety of questions to ensure the correct appointment is scheduled. Mammogram screening takes place on both Monday and Friday. Women can also have this screening test ordered by their primary care manager or woman’s health provider. spirituality is lacking, sooner or later the physical and mental will collapse as well.” Rahman noted that it’s important for a chaplain and chaplain assistant to work together, especially given the possible barriers between officers and enlisted personnel. This working relationship must be properly maintained in order to be able to minister effectively, he said, recalling his experience when he was at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas. Basic military trainees would become nervous when an officer approaches. “At basic training, new recruits into the Air Force are drilled constantly the difference of an officer and enlisted whereupon they even salute a poster of an officer outside their chow hall line,” Rahman said. “The first thing they see is not the chaplain insignia, the first thing they see is the rank. It can build walls, and they’re not easily apt to open. If you have a chaplain assistant who is enlisted like them, they may be more apt to open up to them.” Even though RSTs are heavily engaged at home station, their mission of serving the Airmen’s spiritual needs extends to deployed locations as well. Cilliers said being deployed as an RST can be an advantage, explaining that the separation from the extra duties and responsibilities at home base allows them to focus more on ministering to the Airmen. Another benefit,

Cilliers added, is that chaplains and chaplain assistants can work at a closer level since they are deployed to the same location and work longer shifts. “You share a dining facility together, you walk down the street in between the tents, you see people and interact with them,” Cilliers said. “It’s not like people who jump in their car and go home; you stay where you are.” Religious support teams are sometimes called upon to serve those who have bravely faced some harsh realities of war, Cillers said. An RST’s task descriptions may have a wide range; apart from counseling Airmen and advising leaders, RSTs also make sure the chapel facility is kept in good condition, conduct retreats for married couples and singles and even prepare food for base events. However, these different tasks have a focus: the Airmen and their families, Cilliers said. “There are several duties which go along with it, but if I have to sum it up in one sentence, it’s taking care of our Airmen,” Cilliers explained. “That doesn’t mean just junior enlisted, that means all of us from airman basic to general; we all are Airmen, and we need to be taking care of the spiritual needs of those Airmen.” While Rahman and Cilliers may have different duty titles and different ranks, they both have the same reason for doing what they do: the desire to help people.

with Ricotta Ingredients (for 4 people) 1/3 left over dried out baguette 10 tablespoons olive oil ½ cup pine nuts 4 garlic cloves 2 tablespoons capers 8-10 stalks of mint Zest of 1 lemon 1 pound tagliatelle pasta ½ teaspoon salt 8 tablespoons ricotta cheese 1 cup black Taggiasca olives in oil without stones (at your economy grocery) ½ teaspoon fresh ground black pepper Cut bread in ¾ inch cubes. Heat four tablespoons oil. Add bread and pine nuts and roast until pine nuts have a slightly brown color. Drain on a kitchen towel to reduce some of the oil. Add garlic to remaining oil and let it slightly simmer until the garlic is soft. When it is soft, put it in a bowl

and mash it to the consistency of mashed potatoes. Put capers in cold water for 5-10 minutes to reduce the salt. Then strain. Tear the mint leaves a bit so you don’t have whole leaves. Wash the lemon under hot water and dry it. Grate it on the fine side of the grater. Press all the juice out of the lemon. Boil pasta in salted water for about 9 minutes until almost done. Heat mashed garlic, oil, capers, olives, 1 cup of the pasta water and ricotta cheese. Cook on low heat 3-4 minutes, stirring constantly. Season with salt, pepper, lemon zest and 2-3 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice. Strain pasta and add to the other ingredients. Add mint. Stir all together. Garnish with roasted bread and pine nuts. A sprinkle of pepper on top will add a nice color as well.

New ACS facility welcomes community families Story and photo by Brittany Jones 21st Theater Sustainment Command Public Affairs Army Community Service officially opened its doors during a ribbon-cutting ceremony held Oct.3 at the agency’s new home on Kleber Kaserne. Col. Keith E. Igyarto, U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz commander, and Command Sgt. Maj. Edward J. Williams III presided over the earlyafternoon ceremony. Mary Aguirre, Gold Star mother, and Inge Colton, Gold Star family member, cut the honorary ribbon. The new facility, located in Bldg. 3210, is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays and Fridays, and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursdays. Though ACS has not established any new programs, its move to a larger facility allows space to revamp signature community services like the Lending Closet, where service members and their Families turn to borrow household items during their military transitions. Close proximity to the regional Soldier in-processing facility is an added benefit. Soldiers and families conducting processing business can easily access the extensive Lending Closet during their visit. The building, which served formerly as Army barracks, has been completely renovated. The new location includes privacy frosted glass doors separating the facility from other co-located agencies like Family Advocacy and Sexual Harassment/Assault Response Prevention. The larger facility brings ancillary benefits such as additional opportunities for employment. Motorists must watch out for dangers in fall by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Motorists must be extremely careful now during fall and be aware of additional dangers on the streets. There are fog, storm, black ice and deer passing. Automobile clubs and Polizei officials give recommendations on how to get safely through the fall season. Whenever there is dense fog, a general rule is to slow down, drive even more carefully, and always have the lights turned on. Adjust speed to range of sight. If visibility is only 50 meters ahead, don’t drive faster than 50 kilometers per hour. If it is 100 meters, don’t drive faster than 80 kph, and if visibility is 150 meters, don’t drive faster than 100 kph. Focus on the safety poles, not the center stripes. The poles on the right side always have rectangular reflectors, and those on the left have two round reflectors. The density of fog can be estimated by the distance of those safety poles. On regular roads, the distance between two poles is 25 meters and on the autobahn it’s 50 meters. A reduced speed during bad visibility or while driving through forests is

also needed for another reason: With less daylight, animals become active later in the morning and earlier at night. If animals suddenly appear, motorists should brake immediately, turn down the lights and blow the horn. They should not swerve and lose control. On streets with deer crossing traffic signs, drivers should drive in a cautious and anticipating way. If a collision with an animal happens, the warning lights have to be

turned on and the vehicle has to be secured. Injured persons have to be taken care of and the police have to be called. The animal should not be touched. Foxes can be infected with rabies and deer, apparently unconscious, can kick out. It’s considered poaching if somebody takes the deer and puts it in the trunk. This results in the confiscation of the vehicle and a fine. In some cases, a prison sentence of up to five years is possible. Car owners need written confirmation

by the police or the lease holder for hunting in the area so comprehensive insurance will pay for the damage. The lease holder is obliged to find an animal that got hit and hurt and put it out of its misery. If possible, motorists should take a photo of the location of accident and the animal. As soon as possible, the insurance agency should be contacted. In 2015, more than 230,000 motorists had accidents caused by animals in Germany. Insurance agencies had to pay a total of 575 million Euro for the damages. Autumn usually brings the first black ice, which calls for special attention. Also, when agricultural vehicles dirty the roads with clay and clods of earth, dangerous situations may occur, especially for motorcyclists. Mud and clumps in combination with moistness can result in slippery street surfaces. Heavy winds or storms can cause another danger. Drivers should adjust their speed, be careful when passing trucks or busses, and watch for signs on bridges and in forest aisles. Officials also recommend not to park under trees when it’s very windy or stormy. Branches might fall onto cars and damage them badly.

October carnival starts today in Kaiserslautern by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Messeplatz fairgrounds in Kaiserslautern will turn into a big amusement park today to Oct. 24, when the city will sponsor its traditional “Oktoberkerwe,” or October carnival. The event will feature rides for adults and children, beer gardens, and a wide range of merchandise as well as food and candy specialties.

The history of carnivals in Kaiserslautern dates back to March 1571, when Emperor Maximilian II granted the town of Kaiserslautern the right to hold two cattle markets each year. For this event, traveling people came to town, and the traditional “Kerwe,” or carnival, which nowadays is held in May and October, started to develop. Since World War II, the “Lautrer Kerwe” with 200,000 to 250,000 visitors today, has the reputation of being the biggest folks fest in the Westpfalz. Oktoberkerwe will open at 5 p.m. today and tapping the first keg of beer is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the fest tent. When it’s dark, around 9 p.m., a fireworks display will light up the sky. The amusement park will feature a variety of rides such as the Jungle Train, Flash, Break Dance and Kick Down. Zombie is an adventure haunted house offering funny creeps to families on two floors. Visitors can enjoy rides in The Crazy Maus, a giant Ferris wheel, and car enthusiasts can ride go-karts and compete against 15 other drivers. The Walk of Fame is a mirror maze with fog and laser effects. Children can have fun with skills games and taking rides in miniscooters, merry-go-rounds and on ponies.

The Superwellenflug, a chair swing ride, offers a romantic ride at the October carnival in Kaiserslautern today to Oct. 24.

Beer gardens, tents and bistros will lure hungry and thirsty visitors. Palatinate and international culinary specialties such as crispy chicken, ham hocks, crepes, pizza and fish will also be available at the food booths. The “shopping street” will take visitors on a shopping trip. Until late at night they can buy a variety of merchandise to include clothes, curtains, household items, leather goods, jewelry, spices, arts and crafts items. The ride owners and vendors will

say good-bye to their customers with a Thank You fireworks display around 9 p.m. Oct. 24. The rides will be open 2 to 11 p.m. each day and until midnight today and on Saturdays. Some food booths and vendors will open at 11 a.m. each day. Like every year, stores in Kaiserslauten will open 1 to 6 p.m. the first Sunday during October carnival. Wednesday will be Family Day with reduced prices on rides and merchandise.

The Pfrimmtal Touristik association will sponsor its traditional spooky Halloween event Oct. 22 in Breunigweiler. A diversity of animals such as giant spiders and bats as well as ghosts, witches, monsters and bandits will be up to mischief and scare participants on a horror trip trail. The horror event will take place 6:30 to 11 p.m. and the entry to “spooky horror world” will be at the sports field in Breunigweiler. Here, hiking participants will be able to get refreshments before starting their horror trip. “Sturdy shoes and the love of adventure are good requirements for the 2-kilometer long route,” said Albert Koch from the PFT association. “Just like last year, the horror trip leads to the center of Breunigweiler, which will turn into a giant horror arena, decorated with bloodthirsty accessories and typical Halloween items,” Koch said.
