37th AS conducts exercise in Romania Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Lane Plummer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

OTOPENI AIR BASE, Romania — The 37th Airlift Squadron kicked off exercise Carpathian Summer 2016 May 9 on Otopeni Air Base, Romania. This 11-day off-station training is a bilateral exercise to enhance interoperability and readiness with Romania by conducting combined air operations. According to 1st Lt. Mark Alpert, 37th AS executive officer, the exercise demonstrated the U.S. commitment and close cooperation with NATO partners. “We have a lot to learn from each other,” Alpert said. “We have a great relationship with the Romanians and have been working with them since 1996. It’s been beneficial for both of our armed forces.” Approximately 80 personnel from the 37th AS and three C-130J Super Hercules are participating in the training.

Airmen train in areas such as high-quality threats, unimproved landing zone qualifications and more. According to Airman 1st Class Daniel Ehrsam, 86th Operations Support

Squadron weather forecaster, the opportunities gained through the exercise are invaluable. “I’ve had an amazing time so far,” Ehrsam said. “It’s been an interesting process

working in a different environment than usual. I think I’ve learned more about my job here and I’m excited to bring this experience with me back to Ramstein.” Although the exercise is

about training, the cooperative efforts shared between U.S. and Romanian Airmen continue the longstanding history of Ramstein demonstrating its airpower alongside U.S. allies.

KMC housing collection changes Beginning June 1, the way trash gets picked up for residents in the Ramstein, Vogelweh and Landstuhl townhouse-style units will change to become more like off-base pickups by switching to waste containers for sorting, recycling and handling household trash.

Like in the U.S., where sorting of glass, bottles and paper may change from state to state, it is also different here in Germany with the different underground dumpsters. People who live off base are familiar with the local rules and are a good source of information if you have questions. On-base recycling has been a dumpster-type system, until now. Whatever may come: Are we ready for it? COMMENTARY

by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs I sat at my desk feeling tired as the clock approached 5 p.m. It was a long day at work, and I was ready to go home. I already started daydreaming. Retreat, that sweet afternoon bugle song, would call an end to the duty day as I say “see you later” to my coworkers and enjoy a nice workout at the gym. Feeling fit and refreshed, I would drive home where my wonderful wife would greet me at the door and a delicious dinner would greet me at the table. Content with all that life has given me, I would end the day sleeping in my soft comfortable bed. “Ah,” I thought to myself as I continued spacing out. “What could be better than the bliss of home-sweet-home after a job well done?” Suddenly a mysterious disembodied voice popped my dream bubble and dragged me back to reality.

“Exercise, exercise, exercise!” it said. At first, I thought it was the little angel on my right shoulder telling me to hurry to the gym. But no, it was the loud speaker announcing the early phase of Ramstein’s exercise Wing Thunder. Wing Thunder was meant to evaluate Ramstein’s response in the event an adversary would try to attack the base. “Alarm yellow, alarm yellow,” the voice continued. Alarm yellow is a military code meaning an enemy attack is probable within the next 30 minutes and all personnel should seek shelter. We hunkered down in our building and braced for the fictitious attack. I soon realized I would arrive home later than planned. Thanks a lot, mysterious disembodied voice. I thought to myself, “How strange of this hypothetical scenario playing just as it was time to go home!” I pondered on this thought for a while,

and then it hit me: if the enemy wanted to attack us, they would hit us when we are least prepared. Around 5 p.m., we tend to wind down. We start thinking about going home, going to the gym, going out with our friends or sitting down to a meal with our family. A missile attack is the last thing on our minds. Enemies can be unforgiving and if we are not prepared, we won’t know what hit us. Then it will be home, the gym or the restaurant which will be the last thing on our minds. So I meditated upon this concept of readiness. I remembered that as a member of the U.S. armed forces, I must be prepared for anything no matter what time of the day or week it is. Readiness is what prepares us for our mission, no matter what it is. It is what enables us to take on anything which comes our way, however daunting it may be. This is the valuable lesson I learned during exercise Wing Thunder.

U.S. Army Sgt. Roman Vyatkov, Defense Threat Reduction Agency Russian linguist, was named the Secretary of Defense’s 2015 Junior Noncommissioned Officer of the Year at the Pentagon April 7. Vyatkov is a Russian linguist and interpreter for the Defense Threat Reduction Agency in Europe currently stationed at Kleber Kaserne. DTRA-E’s mission is to safeguard the U.S. and its allies from weapons of mass destruction by providing the means to prevent and counter WMD proliferation and reduce, eliminate and mitigate their effects. Vyatkov’s role in this mission is as a liaison officer for U.S. and NATO installation commanders in United States Air Forces in Europe.

“Sgt. Vyatkov provides essential linguistic capability to all of DTRA’s primary missions in Europe,” said Air Force Maj. Gen. John P. Horner, DTRA and U.S. Strategic Command Center for Combating Weapons of Mass Destruction acting director and Standing Joint Force Headquarters for Elimination commander. “He facilitates communication between U.S. government representatives and our foreign counterparts, primarily from former Soviet, Russian speaking countries.” In addition to his job as a linguist, Vyatkov also conducts combat lifesaving skills training for DTRA-E personnel. While participating in an exercise in Wisconsin in 2015, he witnessed a real-world vehicle accident involving a civilian family. He used his combat medic experience and was

able to take control of the situation before medics arrived. “After breaking the windows, I extracted both parents and one child from the vehicle. At that point I realized another child was still lodged in the backseat of the van,” Vyatkov said. “I noticed one child had a partial amputation. Relying on my combat experience, I immediately put an improvised tourniquet around her arm to stop the arterial bleeding.” His quick actions, including triaging each patient, resulted in a toddler’s limb being saved due to him applying a tourniquet using his own belt. Horner commended Vyatkov’s actions during this situation. “For those who know and work with Sgt. Vyatkov, it is not surprising that this young NCO was ready and poised to render the necessary

It was a very proud moment to represent my unit and our agency.”

KMC honors Kindergraves

Kaiserslautern Military Community members view the gravestones of deceased children after the Kindergraves Memorial Service May 14 at the Kaiserslautern Military Cemetery. The ceremony is held annually to honor the children who were lost during the Cold War. They were mainly infants who died of complications before reaching their first birthday.

Story and photo by Senior Airman Nicole Keim 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Kaiserslautern Military Community members came together May 14 for the Kindergraves memorial service to honor and remember 451 American children who died during the Cold War and were buried in the Kaiserslautern Military Cemetery. With a few exceptions, these little ones were the children of American military members stationed in the KMC. At that time, assistance was not available to transport the deceased for a stateside burial. Most of the children were infants who died of complications before reaching their first birthday. Chief Master Sgt. Stephen Arbona, Ramstein Area Chief’s Group president, began the ceremony with opening comments. “We are dedicated in continuing this event each year to remember the children and to honor the sacrifices of their parents,” Arbona said. “The children, born between 1952 and 1971, had no real chance at life. Most died before their first birthday, and we recognize the parents who suffered through the pain and agony of losing their children and had to leave their loved ones behind.” After the opening comments, Air Force, Army and local community leaders laid wreaths and lit candles to honor the fallen children.

ANY WHERE IN TH EW

The U.S. Air Force Forces in Europe band then played a song to commemorate the children and parents which was followed by comments by Lt. Gen. Timothy Ray, 3rd Air Force commander. “It’s an honor and a privilege to be here,” Ray said. “When I think about this setting, I think about a paradox — a paradox of how pretty of a setting this is, and how peaceful of a dynamic we have here, but it’s underscored by an emotional scar. This is about family. When you think about the military, it is all really about family.” During the initial years, the city of Kaiserslautern donated the use of two public burial plots while local groups associated with the military community maintained these sites. The lease for the gravesites expired in 1986, but the future of the graves was secured by donations from the German-American Women’s Club of Kaiserslautern, the Army and Air Force Spouse’s Clubs and other private sources. The RACG volunteered as executive agent and signed the lease with Kaiserslautern. City officials agreed to consolidate the two original gravesites into one area where the children rest today. The German-American and International Women’s Club and RACG continue to oversee the care and maintenance of the Kindergraves to this day.

available from housing self-help stores. The yellow bags are for light fractions and rinsed food cans, all plastics, Styrofoam and wax papers; blue bins are for paper products, like in the states; brown bins are for biological waste, most kitchen waste and yard waste; and the black bin is for everything else. More details on what goes into each bin will be distributed to houses along with the schedule for pickups. Starting June 1, we will switch from the underground dumpsters, which will be phased out, to these containers and the yellow bags with a collection on a regular schedule. To start with, the black bin and yellow bags will be collected twice a month, with no limit to how many bags you can put out. The blue bin will be collected once a month. The brown bin will be collected weekly from May through November and twice a month from December through April. On collection day, put the respective container curbside in front of your house by 6 a.m. with the lid shut, and put it away by 6 p.m. The truck cannot pick up over filled containers. If trash is put in the wrong container, the contractor will not pick it up, consistent with German law, and will provide a note of what was wrong. The conversion is to reduce the improper dumping that has come with the underground containers and reduce our refuse collection costs. Right now we are often charged the full-trash rate for all our dumpsters because they have a mix of trash, whereas the yellow, brown and blue bins are charged a cheaper rate if they don’t have regular trash mixed in. The change will make it easier for you to sort trash at home rather than carrying bags to the nearby underground dumpster only to find the wrong things are mixed or one of the dumpsters are jammed. If you have problems with the containers, report it in accordance with the directions in the flyer from the housing office.

Holocaust survivor shares story with Ramstein by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Selma van de Perre was just a young woman when World War II broke out in Europe. She remembers the day when her older brother came home with the news. “He came home on the 10th of May shouting, ‘Wake up, wake up! It’s war, it’s war!’” she remembered. Van de Perre shared her story of survival in front of a packed crowd May 6 at Hercules Theater on Ramstein. “In 1941, they started collecting Jews,” van de Perre said. “In 1942, they started calling out Jewish boys and girls as well as taking them from the street. They had big vans and they just collected (from) the street daily.” Van de Perre and her family were of Jewish descent, meaning they were a target in 1940s Europe. As persecution against the Jews increased, van de Perre knew it was no longer safe for them to stay where they were. As others were being imprisoned, hauled off to concentration camps and even killed, van de Perre arranged for her family to be taken into hiding in the south of Holland, and eventually met a group of doctors who happened to be members of the resistance. After spending time with many members of the resistance, she made a decision to stand up, she joined the fight against Nazi tyranny. Van de Perre explained that they were short of people helping the resistance because so many of them were already being imprisoned or had to go into hiding themselves. “So I said, ‘Can I help?’” she explained as she remembered how enthusiastic she was as a young girl. “They said, ‘Oh yes, are you sure?’ and I said yes. So that’s how my career started.” She found herself delivering what she called “illegal papers” for the resistance around Holland and in other European countries. She also transported money used for the cause and also to pay families which housed Jews hiding

Selma van de Perre, 92-year-old Holocaust survivor, sits with Tech. Sgt. Robert Jarvis, 86th Civil Engineer Squadron firefighter, during a Holocaust remembrance event May 6 on Ramstein. Van de Perre shared her story of surviving Ravensbrueck, a womens concentration camp.

from persecution. “I was given a few assignments,” said van de Perre, “All of them were quite dangerous and very risky.” Along the way, the resistance gave van de Perre a new identity. The Nazis however eventually caught van de Perre. She was brought to the police station where she was interrogated for several days before being sent to a concentration camp in the Netherlands. “I was told I was (going to be) in prison for the duration of the war,” she said. “I was put to work in the gas mask factory.” Van de Perre did not stop resisting the Nazis even while she was imprisoned. When they put her to work, she made some of her work unproductive. Van de Perre said she intentionally assembled the masks in such a way that they would come loose by the time they would be used. Later on, she and other prisoners were moved to the Ravensbrueck womens’ concentration camp in Germany, where she and her fellow prisoners were subject to cruelty and physical abuse. “I saw the most terrible things happening there,” van de Perre said. She recalled a story of when two so-called nurses came to assist a very sick woman and just took her mattress and threw it on the ground with her on it and just dragged her outside as she screamed and cried out.

“The woman was screaming, ‘No, no, no, please, no, no, no!’” van de Perre recounted. “We never saw her again.” Van de Perre herself was also abused and degraded by the Nazis at Ravensbrueck. One day she missed a roll call because she was unable to move, and she remembers being beat with a belt until she fainted. In addition to being beaten and tortured, van de Perre and her fellow prisoners were also subjected to starvation. Van de Perre said they were not given lunch despite working for so many hours and not being paid. After a long day of work the prisoners would be given a slice of bread and socalled coffee. “Sometimes there was soup — it was called soup, but it was just water with grass in it. And that was all you had, so people became very thin quite quickly,” she explained. “Some prisoners even died of starvation at the camp.” As the war raged on, the Nazis began killing off more prisoners at Ravensbrueck. Women who were disabled or impaired started being singled out and put into groups, said van de Perre. The Nazis told them that these women did not have to work anymore; they were gassed. One day rumors began spreading around the camp that they were going to be freed. At first, van de Perre said they did not believe the news. Later on however, someone arrived to assure them that the

war was over and they indeed were free. “After hours of waiting, there was a little sports car arriving with this very nice tall, blonde Swedish man in it. He told us that he was… a friend of the head of the Swedish Red Cross.” The prisoners waited for hours to be picked up. As the day turned to night, the man offered van de Perre a cigarette. As the Swede lit the cigarette for her, someone from the camp shouted at van de Perre not to smoke. But her new Swedish friend assured her that she could smoke and the Nazis had no more authority over her. “It was then I suddenly felt I was free,” she said with a smile of relief.

Van de Perre survived approximately one year at Ravensbrueck, enduring the cruel and degrading treatment of the Nazis. She said what kept her going was the will to live and the mutual support of her fellow prisoners who became her friends. “I didn’t want the Germans to be successful in having me dead,” she said. “I was (in) very bad (condition) at times, but I survived.” Van de Perre said she considers it very important her and other holocaust survivors to speak out and tell their story to the coming generations. “I speak to students so they can pass it along to their children, because I think it’s very, very important that our stories are getting through in the future so that it won’t happen (again),” she said. After van de Perre concluded her talk, Col. Brandon R. Hileman, 86th Airlift Wing vice commander, thanked her and presented her with a gift as a token of appreciation. “As today’s event comes to a close, we’d like to thank Ms. Van De Perre again for joining us. It’s been a pleasure ma’am,” Hileman said. “May each of us remember the powerful story we heard here today and use the knowledge to fight the evil that exists in our society, to stand up for freedom, equality, justice and peace and to better ourselves and the world around us.”

Ramstein students learn financial realities through CU4Reality Story and photo by Senior Airman Larissa Greatwood 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Ramstein middle and high school students had the opportunity to learn lifelong skills through the CU4Reality program May 5. CU4Reality is a business model curriculum that has been integrated into classrooms to teach students the importance of budgeting, career and lifestyle choices. The program has been used in American schools in Germany for the past nine years. Sandra M. Campbell, overseas education department manager, said the purpose of the program is to show students how their grades can impact their future career and the overall choices they will make on a daily basis. The program is part of a business class that students can choose to enroll in. When they first start the class they do not know what their career path will be yet, but as students progress throughout the semester, their potential professions are dictated by their cumulative grade earned. Once the students had a better idea of their status in the class, they were given options on what career path would match their grade. The hope is that the students will understand the correlation between receiving good grades to pursue a well-paying career in the future, Campbell said. “We did research on what types of careers are available to each graderange,” she said. “A lot of them realize they may need to do better in school to make the right career choice. The purpose of the program is to show them the importance of

school for their futures.” Erin Markus, Ramstein High School business, computer and health education teacher, explained that this is the second semester her students have participated in this program and she hopes it continues in the future. “I love teaching the business course because it’s important to be prepared for the current economy and instability these days,” she said. “We’re trying to get them prepared for any adversity they may experience, but also the realities in life. I always tell my students that they may not understand the relevance of this course until they’re faced with making their own budgets and paying their own bills. Hopefully they’ll remember something they learned from my class, and that’s how I know I did my job.” Through the semester, the students

basically created a fictional life for themselves reflecting their real goals. The teachers made sure they were ambitious but realistic at the same time. “They had to choose their career, research how many years they would have to go to college and the average salary for their chosen career,” Markus explained. “This course is just a snippet of reality and a familiarization of what’s to come in their futures.” Some students struggled to stay within their financial means, while others made the most of their situation and kept their spending practical. “It was an interesting experience,” said Dominic Kubaz, Ramstein High School senior. “There are a lot of things I didn’t think about like insurance and taxes that really cut into your pay. It made me realize how bad

things can get really quickly if you aren’t budgeting. “I chose to be a doctor, so I definitely had money to spend,” he continued. “I was convinced to take the exclusive apartment which was a one bedroom for $3,900 a month. I also went with a Tesla car, and almost bought a Macbook, watch and sports game tickets, but when I looked at my budget, I realized I couldn’t buy everything I wanted. Even if you make a lot of money, you still have to cut back.” Brittany Peterson, Ramstein High School senior, said her career of choice was a high school teacher. “I didn’t have a whole lot of money so I had to be very realistic,” Peterson said. “I learned that if I’m really thrifty and don’t spend a lot of money on food or temptations, then I definitely do have enough money, but I have to be very careful. I had enough money for everything I needed and some things I wanted. I went with things that were mid-priced and practical. I learned that I can spend in my range, I just have to make sure I keep my spending reasonable.” The students agreed that the experience taught them the importance of budgeting and being practical regardless of their income in the future. Though some students are graduating from high school, while others have years to go before reaching adulthood, they were all able to get a head-start on practicing budgeting and being realistic when it comes to living on their own financial plan. With programs like this, students are able to learn important lessons and better prepare themselves for their futures after graduation.

Ramstein Airmen honor lost IFO 21 crew Story and photo by Senior Airman Nicole Keim 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Airmen snapped to attention to render a solemn salute as they watched the U.S. flag being lowered in front of them. More than 50 Airmen from the 86th Operations Group gathered for a remembrance ceremony and retreat April 29 on Ramstein. Lt. Col. Daniel Mangan, 76th Airlift Squadron commander, led the formation that is held annually to honor those who paid the ultimate price two decades ago. On April 3, 1996, an aircrew from the 76th Airlift Squadron assembled to prepare for a mission over Dubrovnik, Croatia. As they readied a Boeing CT-43A and passengers for the Implementation Force 21 mission, they could have never predicted the challenges they were about to face. Six Airmen from Ramstein and 35 passengers lost their lives on that flight while transporting a distinguished visitor. The aircrew made fatal mistakes that ultimately cost them and the passengers their lives; these mistakes

have helped Airmen learn valuable lessons even today. The CT-43A used for this flight was formerly a T-43A navigator training aircraft converted for distinguished-visitor travel. The pilots were faced with an unusual maneuver that night, which involved a non-precision type of instrument approach to their landing, which lacked vertical guidance that U.S. pilots are used to. The approach was not sanctioned for Department of Defense aircraft nor were the pilots proficient in this type of landing. First Lt. Benjamin Kram, 76th Airlift Squadron pilot, explained the accident has taught Airmen how important paying attention to detail is to avoid any tragedies like this in the future. “They were doing the exact same job that we are doing now,” Kram said. “It could have been anyone of us. There were some mistakes made by the crew that led to the incident, so remembering that gets the squadron to take a look at what we can do better in the future to make sure we don’t have another incident like this. … They (were) Airmen, our brothers and sisters, so it’s important to honor them.”

Airmen from the 86th Operations Group stand in a formation before a retreat and remembrance ceremony April 29 on Ramstein.

Although the mission at the 86th OG continues around the clock, Airmen took time out of their schedules to remember their fallen wingmen. “It was such an honor to be able to take time and pay tribute to the six crewmembers who made the ultimate sacrifice 20 years ago,” said Senior Airman Andie Carlson, 76th AS flight attendant. “It also serves as a reminder that each day the people

around us put their lives on the line to meet a greater purpose; that’s bravery in its truest form. I’ve been blessed to have the opportunity to serve with the men and women I do, and to honor the individuals who I will never get the chance to.” Although the flag approached the ground with the close of the duty day, Airmen continue to remember those who have served before them to better achieve the mission in the future.

569th security forces Airmen conduct active-shooter response training by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Airmen from the 569th U.S. Forces Police Squadron participated in an active-shooter response exercise May 5 on Vogelweh. The exercise fulfilled an annual train-

ing requirement for security forces members, and sharpen their combat skills. “Today we conducted active-shooter training for the members of our unit to help prepare them in case of a real world situation,” said Tech. Sgt. Christian Smith, 569th USFPS assistant NCO in charge of training. During the exercise, which took place inside the vacant Galaxy Theater on Vogelweh, Airmen simulated various trainings such as room-clearing operations and weapons handling. Smith said the training was designed to be more realistic partly because of the use of Simunition rounds, which are a brand of non-lethal training ammunition, similar to a paintball. “This training provides concrete realism,” Smith said. “If you try to clear a corner of the building and get shot, then you know you did not clear it properly.” The training was divided into three phases. In the first phase, Airmen teamed up in pairs and stormed into the theater to shoot at targets. In the second phase, some Airmen went to the upper floors of the building and played the role of the opposing forces. The remaining Airmen infiltrated the stairwell two at a time in pursuit of the enemy. The third phase of the training was a competition where Airmen guarded a

metal box in a room, while the rest of the Airmen attempted to enter the room in an effort to retrieve it while returning fire to the enemy. Some participants in the exercise considered it an opportunity to enhance their skills in installation defense. Staff Sgt. Steffan Roverud, 569th USFPS installation patrolman, said it was a good chance to apply what he learned in the classroom through handson training. “Its good training,” Roverud said. “Instead of just watching slideshows and discussing it, you get put into it and experience it with a low level of stress.” Roverud also affirmed that the use of the Simunition rounds helped provide a more realistic training experience. “It gives you feedback on what you’re doing wrong,” Roverud said. “If you’re not taking cover properly, you’ll feel it instantly.” Senior Airman Jesse De Alba, 569th USFPS installation patrolman, said he enjoyed the training and learned important lessons from it. “I had a lot of fun and learned a lot of things,” De Alba said. “When you get in there, there’s a lot of questions going through your mind, such as who’s in the room, how many are there and what kind of weapons do they have. Obviously the threat is there, but you

don’t know where.” De Alba said it is important for Airmen to be aware of the possibilities of threats on base and to know how to respond. “Its great training, I think everybody in the Air Force should have it,” De Alba said. “When it comes down to active shooters, it’s unpredictable.” The 569th USFPS is ready to respond in case of a crisis such as an active shooter explained Smith. This training the Airmen conducted set a standard for the whole unit to follow regardless of who they would be paired up with, he continued “This installation is well protected,” Smith said, “If ever an active shooter comes onto the installation, the unit has been trained to the same standard; no matter who our Airmen are partnered with at the time, they will handle the situation in the same exact way.” De Alba said he and other 569th USFPS Airmen stand ready to protect Vogelweh thanks to the training they have received. “I’m always ready,” De Alba said. “Every type of training we do betters us in some way. ... This helps us become better patrolmen for the base to protect the populace, as well as to spread what we’re trying to teach to the other members of the Air Force and the military.”

Multinational disaster exercise on Hungarian air base builds relationships Story and photo by Tech. Sgt. Andria Allmond 111th Attack Wing, Air National Guard PAPA AIR BASE, Hungary — Three countries practiced working together during Exercise Anakonda Response 2016, a joint-service, multinational exercise that included military and government civilians from Hungary, the United Kingdom and the United States. The goal of the exercise was twofold: test and evaluate the 7th Mission Support Command’s military effectiveness in a multinational humanitarian relief effort and build real-world bonds with fellow NATOcountry militaries. “Our goal coming into this was to train the staff and have them gain an understanding of foreign humanitarian assistance and disaster response; and I think we went a long way to accomplishing that,” said Lt. Col. Lance Oliver, 7th MSC chief of plans. “Another mission goal was building relationships. And I think that was the biggest take away from this, not only with our host nation, but with all the participants in the exercise.” For the roughly two-week-long event, the U.S. organized a full assembly of military representation: Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Army Reserve, Army National Guard and Air National Guard. Also, the Hungarian military hosted the United Kingdom’s Royal Army and Corps of Royal Marines. The array of military constituents worked with previously unfamiliar comrades toward achieving a common goal. By doing so, bonds were built. Upon the exercise’s end, leaders from all three countries viewed the scenario as an overwhelming success.

A U.S. Army officer and civilian check the seal on the protective mask of a U.S. Navy officer May 2 during Exercise Anakonda Response 2016 at Papa Air Base, Hungary. For the roughly twoweek-long event, the U.S. organized a full assembly of military representation, including the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Army Reserve, Army National Guard and Air National Guard. Also, the Hungarian military hosted the United Kingdom’s Royal Army and Corps of Royal Marines.

“I think the exercise has reached its aim, because the aim was to see and to work out how we can work together efficiently, and this has never happened before between the (Hungarian and U.S.) forces,” said Col. Csaba Szarka, the Hungarian officer in charge. “And it was not only to incorporate the military forces, but also with the civilian parts as well. And our forces received the necessary training to be better prepared for the next scenario, hopefully. ” Hungary not only served as the host, but was also

the nation upon which the scenarios were based. In 2010, the retaining wall of a caustic waste reservoir in the country collapsed. Releasing more than 38 million cubic feet of highly-alkaline red sludge, the toxic material flooded several villages, killed 10 people and injured more than 120 with chemical burns. Exercise planners used these factual events to fashion some notional incidences, while also incorporating fictional content to maintain training currency. Created to be challenging, participants were clearly tested by the experience. Many stated that the scenarios, and real-world trials, served to assemble a more skillful total-force military. “It’s the connectivity; the common thread. It’s the people who make this work,” said Color Sergeant John Dixon of the No. 3. Column, 77th Brigade, Dennison Barracks, Royal Marines, United Kingdom. “The people coming together with a common goal, a common understanding to take this forward; and with that, strengths are built. This experience is going to prove mutually beneficial across the whole of the sphere. “When I see what’s going on during this exercise, it tells me that people are talking to each other. When that happens, so can progress toward a mutually beneficial goal.” With the success of this year’s exercise, the planning for next year has already begun. “I hope that we can continue to develop the relationships that we had to establish to do this,” said Oliver. “And that’s where we’re at. We’re looking forward to maintaining the relationships. So we get the participation again next year and continuing to work with our Hungarian allies, we have to maintain momentum.”

by Lt. Col. Jefferson Wolfe 7th Mission Support Command Public Affairs The 7th Mission Support Command held a double change of responsibility ceremony May 8 at the Kaiserslautern Community Activities Center. Command Sgt. Maj. James J. Murrin handed over his duties as the 7th MSC Senior Enlisted Advisor to Command Sgt. Maj. Raymond L. Brown. “Thank you for the opportunity to pursue my passion,” Brown said during the ceremony. Previously, Brown was the command sergeant major for the 361st Civil Affairs Brigade. Chief Warrant Officer 5 Martha Ervin, 7th MSC’s new command chief warrant officer, replaced Chief Warrant Officer 5 Debra A. Blankenbaker, who will also retire this year. “This is great opportunity to be the command chief warrant officer of the 7th MSC, and I look forward to the challenge,” Ervin said. The ceremony was officiated by the 7th MSC’s Commanding General Brig. Gen. Arlan M. DeBlieck, who praised Murrin and Blankenbaker as they head toward retirement later this summer. Both leaders brought wisdom and experience to their positions, DeBlieck said. “It’s been a long, long, great ride,” said Murrin, who will retire with nearly 40 years of service. During his time with the 7th,

Murrin deployed to Senegal as part of the team that provided logistics synchronization from October to December 2014 for the fight against Ebola. He also spent six months filling in as command sergeant major of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command, the 7th MSC’s active-duty headquarters. Murrin was instrumental in making the 7th MSC “an organization of excellence,” DeBlieck said. Murrin never dreamed he’d still be in the Army almost 40 years after enlisting in June, 1977. “The Army has never been better than it is right now,” he said. “The Army will answer the call and will do it well.” Blankenbaker’s experience with personnel, and her experience working at Human Resources Command helped get the right people to the 7th MSC for years to come,” DeBlieck said. “Her level of expertise is beyond me,” he said. “It’s way up there. She’s been a godsend.” In 2014, Blankenbaker earned the Army’s Sexual Assault Prevention Innovation award and received the Defense Department’s award for the bystander intervention training program she developed. “I can’t think of another place I’d like to end my career,” said Blankenbaker, who has more than 36 years in uniform. “I’m very proud to have been part of that. I’m honored to serve.”

WRAPPED IN KRAEUTERFLAEDLE (herb pancakes) and Ham

Ingredients (for 4 people)

2.5 pounds asparagus 1.5 pounds potatoes 8 6-inch slices boiled ham 2 cups flour ½ cup chopped fresh parsley Salt, ground white pepper and nutmeg to taste ½ teaspoon lime juice ½ teaspoon sugar 2 eggs 1 ½ cup water 3 tablespoons butter 2 tablespoons margarine Peel the asparagus. Prepare the boiling water by adding 1 ½ teaspoons salt, ¼ teaspoon nutmeg, ½ teaspoon ground white pepper, ½ teaspoons sugar, 1 tablespoon butter and lime juice to 3 quarts of water. Boil the water with the asparagus peels and the parts of the asparagus that you cut off because they were at the bottom of the stalk. This is a great way to get some additional flavor from the peels before throwing them away. Let it boil ½ hour. Remove the peels and add peeled asparagus to the same water. Let it boil for 10 minutes and then reduce heat to simmer for 45 minutes.

To make the Krauterflaedle: Mix flour, water and two eggs to make a runny dough. Add parsley, ground white pepper, nutmeg and salt to taste. Heat margarine in a non-stick 8-inch pan. Pour a thin layer of dough over the entire pan. Cook on both sides for 2-3 minutes. Remove from pan and place in a pre-heated oven at 170 F. Repeat until you have 8 Krauterflaedle. Heat a 10-inch non-stick pan. Add 1 tablespoon butter. Heat the 4 slices of ham on both sides for 2 minutes, just long enough for them to get a little brown and you can smell the ham. Remove to oven and brown the remaining 4 slices. Once done, roll the asparagus and ham up in the Krauterflaedle. Hollandaise sauce is the perfect topping. Get it pre-maid at your local grocery store on the economy. Just warm it slightly in a pan and drizzle over the top of your creation. You will have a nice summer meal to enjoy on your back patio! Serve with a green salad with a light dressing.

10th AAMDC conducts annual Dragon Fire CBRN competition

A Soldier decontaminates a Patriot Launcher in mission-oriented protective posture 4 to simulate a real-life scenario during chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear training for Soldiers from the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command on Baumholder Army Airfield.

by 2nd Lt. Brandt Ange 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command Public Affairs Teams of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear-trained Soldiers from the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command converged to increase CBRN threat awareness, mission readiness, unit cohesion and to find out which team would be named the Dragon Fire 2016 champions May 3 through 5 on Baumholder. Each team consisted of six Soldiers with at least one noncommissioned officer, and none of the members of the team could hold a CBRN military occupational specialty. These teams were trained up

by a CBRN subject matter expert to ensure that not only was the playing field level, but that all individuals participating in the event were trained to be able to continue fighting and surviving in the event of an attack where CBRN weapons were used. “The Soldiers were given around two weeks to prepare for the event, with their unit’s CBRN Soldier,” said 2nd Lt. Danilo Del Pino Jr., the 5th Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery Regiment’s CBRN OIC. “Also on day one of the event the teams ran through all the stations to get a full understanding of each station.” The competition raged for three days, with teams competing in a

myriad of different CBRN events. The events covered a wide variety of CBRN related basic soldier skills including a CBRN written proficiency test, detecting chemical agents using different types of equipment, reacting to a CBRN attack, and even a weapons assembly relay wearing CBRN protective gear in mission-oriented protective posture 4. “To simulate real life scenarios we had the teams decontaminate a Patriot launcher in MOPP 4,” Pino said. “Once you get into different MOPP levels the tasks aren’t so easy.” At the end of the day only one team could claim the coveted CBRN Dragon Fire Trophy, and

that team was from Headquarters and Headquarters Battery 5-7 ADA. While they were the winners of the day, the true winner is really the 10th AAMDC who now has CBRN subject matter experts who will return to their batteries and share their new knowledge and experience, dramatically improving mission readiness and CBRN threat awareness. “In my opinion these competitions are extremely vital for all soldiers to take part in.” stated Spc. Nicholas Incelli, a 14T Patriot Launching Station Enhance Operator who participated in the event. “Not only do you learn new things, earn recognition, or have a great time, but it’s a great change of pace and a way to get outside of your comfort zone.”

Reipoltskirchen will host a medieval market at the bottom of its “Wasserburg,” a moated castle, Saturday and Sunday. For the fourth time, this castle, which is one of the bestkept castles in the Pfalz, will be the location for medieval groups presenting the life of the Middle Ages. “Our medieval market also features knights fights, dance performances, musical presentations, craftsmanship demonstrations and children’s activities,” said organizer Thomas Fischer. “One of the highlights will be the juggling duet Jomamakue, who entertains the audience throughout both days and shows off a fire show at 10:45 p.m. Saturday.” Vendors will sell herbs, spices, jewelry, toys, clothes, leather goods, soap, berry wines and liquor. Craftsmanship presentations include spinning wool, dying wool, pottery, blacksmithing and embroidery. Visitors have the opportunity to learn archery and how to use bow and arrow. “For the first time we are able to present a show with birds of prey at noon and 4 p.m. Sunday,” Fischer said.

Children can have fun in different camps and take part in basket making, building with clay and face painting.
