MUDDER from Page 1 Challenge joint event,” said Scott Lockard, 86th Airlift Wing vice director. “This is a great opportunity to touch on the pillars of Comprehensive Airman Fitness, but also to make everyone aware of sexual assault prevention and response.” With the Ramstein CLEAR Challenge being an awareness event focused on bringing awareness of sexual assault and its impact, combining the two events happened naturally. “It gives you an opportunity to reflect; to think how can I help? Who can I help? How can I stop this? Because in our lifetime it would be great if we didn’t need a sexual assault prevention and response office, a special victim’s council, because we had everyone treating each other with dignity and respect and working together and loving each other like they should be,” said Lockard. “We got an awesome team here who put it together, and we’re looking forward to doing it for many more years.”

Airlifter of the Week: 37 AS Airman receives honor

Ramstein-Miesenbach Mayor Ralf Hechler signs the partnership document as U.S. Air Force Col. George Granholm, 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing vice commander, obeserved at Ramstein-Miesenbach City Hall on April 8. The friendship between Ramstein-Miesenbach and Rota gradually developed since 2013. U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Erol Pangelinan, 37th Airlift Squadron aviation resource management apprentice, stands in front of a C-130J Super Hercules aircraft on Ramstein Air Base, May 3. Pangelinan received the honor of being Ramstein’s Airlifter of the Week for scoring a 100 percent on his aviation resource management systems test, building orders for over 30 flights, inputting vital post-mission data, and maintaining aircrew training records. The partnership document signed by Ramstein-Miesenbach Mayor Ralf Hechler and Rota Mayor José Javier Ruiz Arana sits on a desk at Ramstein-Miesenbach City Hall on April 8. The document signifies an important step in the intercultural exchange of both cities.

Story and photos by Barbara Coe 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The mayors of Rota, Spain, and Ramstein-Miesenbach signed a city partnership agreement at RamsteinMiesenbach City Hall on April 8. U.S. Air Force Col. George Granholm, 521st Air Mobility Operations Wing vice commander, said: “The 521st AMOW works with joint partners to achieve national defense requirements as part of the global en route supply chain.” The cities host the 521st AMOW, a tenant wing located on Ramstein Air Base, and their subordinate units, the 521st Air Mobility Operations Group and the 725th Air Mobility Squadron, at Naval Station Rota, Spain. “It is only fitting that these two cities form a strong partnership because they have been such good partners to the U.S. and to NATO,” said Granholm. “As one of our strongest allies, Germany and Spain are both

very important to the United States in their roles within NATO and as well as support for our military missions worldwide.” Mayor José Javier Ruiz Arana from the city of Rota and Mayor Ralf Hechler of Ramstein-Miesenbach signed the agreement during an official ceremony at Ramstein-Miesenbach City Hall. “Rota is in a similar situation as Ramstein-Miesenbach. One third of the area is used for military purposes, the Americans are there and we recognize that we have a lot in common. I think we complement each other over all generations, institutions, schools, preschools, clubs, and, of course, politically in Europe,” says Hechler. The partnership between RamsteinMiesenbach and Rota gradually developed since 2013. Both communities shared similar progress as hosts to U.S. military installations for more than 60 years.

Airman 1st Class Erol Pangelinan, 37th Airlift Squadron aviation resource management apprentice, received the honor of being Airlifter of the Week, May 2. Pangelinan doesn’t take his Air Force specialty training lightly. He knows how important job knowledge is in accomplishing the mission. Pangelinan recently earned a rare 100 percent on his aviation resource management systems test. In addition, he built orders for more than 30 flights, inputted vital post mission data and maintained aircrew training records.

Chief Master Sgt. Mark Umfleet, acting 86th Airlift Wing command chief, elaborated on the importance of training. “Every path in the Air Force begins with training,” said Umfleet. “Each training program is designed to help you find your strengths and to develop the skills necessary to succeed in the Air Force and achieve your goals. Airman Pangelinan succeeded in his goals which is shown in his recent test score. We just don’t see these type of scores very often.” The Airlifter of the Week program recognizes Ramstein Airmen who, through their hard work and dedication, make the 86th AW the “World’s Best Wing.”

Ramstein Community Center holds monthly spouses tour

Jennifer Latuff, military spouse, gesture towards facilities during a base spouses tour on Ramstein Air Base, April 23. The spouses tour is designed to familiarize Ramstein Air Base newcomers with the local area.

Story and photos by Senior Airman Sara Voigt 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Ramstein Community Center held their monthly Spouses Tour April 23 on Ramstein Air Base. The Community Center Spouses Tour is an ongoing event that strives to educate Ramstein newcomers on base facility resources and opportunities when they PCS to Germany. Leaving home can become a familiar feeling for military members and their dependents. Oftentimes, families get settled at a new base only to end up getting orders somewhere else. Moving overseas can be a beast, but service members and their families have mul-

tiple agencies here to help tame the transition to an overseas station. One of the biggest concerns for families when they move to a new base is knowing where different base facilities are located. Ramstein offers a variety of resources to military personnel, DoD civilians, and their dependents, to help them navigate their way throughout the Kaiserslautern Military Community. One resource that the base offers is the Ramstein Community Center’s Spouses Tour. “The purpose of our tour is to reach out to anyone who is new to the KMC area and to connect them to local resources and activities, on and off base,” said Susanne Cruz, 86th Force Support Squadron Community Center Event

Planner and tour guide. “We aim to reach anyone who is new to the area or even those who have been here a while but feel they do not know much about it.” The spouses tour gives Ramstein newcomers and spouses a guided look around base and off base to include downtown Kaiserslautern. “We first meet at the Ramstein Community Center for a 30-minute briefing where such entities as the base library, Airman & Family Readiness Center, and Non-Appropriated Funds Human Resources representatives are present,” said Cruz. “Then we get on a small bus and tour FSS facilities on base: Outdoor Recreation, Aquatic Center, Arts & Crafts. We also point out other facilities as we drive past, such as the clubs, Gear Up and Moms, the fitness centers etc.” After taking a look at on base facilities, the spouses tour heads to Kaiserslautern to visit the German American Community Office where tour members receive handouts, flyers and information on the local community. This part of the tour serves as a great integration piece on getting acquainted with German customs and cultures. From the GACO, tour members walk to the center of Kaiserslautern to have lunch in order to experience traditional German food and gain knowledge on restaurant dining etiquette in Germany. “Having local national employees at the Ramstein Community Center, we are uniquely positioned to give our customers a tour with in-depth knowledge

of the area and personal experience to share,” said Cruz. Cruz, a German National who moved to the U.S. after becoming a military spouse, is passionate about the tour, and strives to make sure that everyone who attends her tour feels a “little bit more at home” afterwards. “I get to share a bit of my experience of having been a military spouse and lived [living] in a foreign country, so I can empathize with our customers’ situation of being ‘a stranger in a strange land,’” said Cruz. “I make it my goal to leave our customers with the impression that Germany isn’t so ‘strange’ after all.” The spouses tour is held every fourth Tuesday of the month. You can call the Ramstein Community Center at DSN: 480-6600 or commercial: 4906371-476600 to sign up.

Junior enlisted logisticians expand knowledge at workshop by Staff Sgt. Adrian Patoka 21st Theater Sustainment Command For the first time, junior enlisted logisticians from across Europe came together April 22 for a one-week transportation knowledge management workshop at Kleber Kaserne, Kaiserslautern. Soldiers from 21st Theater Sustainment Command, 16th Sustainment Brigade, Surface Deployment and Distribution Command and 7th Mission Support Command learned and practiced with multiple digital tracking and information systems currently used in U.S. Army Europe sustainment operations, like setting the European theater. Setting the theater involves tracking and moving thousands of pieces of a deploying unit’s equipment set from the U.S., into Europe, then through Europe to their final destinations. “With the systems that we’re on and accessing, in a timely manner service members can capture the equipment that comes into U.S. Army Europe,” said Chief Warrant Officer 3 Thomas Fernandez, Plans and Operations Officer, 39th Movement Control Battalion.

https://www.FindItGuide.com/

“They can capture the equipment and start the distribution process much faster by coordinating with the unit, dragging their data off the systems instead of waiting for information to be fed [to them],” Fernandez said. “Being able to see the equipment long before it arrives definitely helps

the Joint Logistics Enterprise.” Oftentimes, junior logisticians are at the tip of the sustainment operations spear. The training expands their knowledge and mission readiness. “A lot of the units, we have junior Soldiers that come here right out of AIT. That confidence – that knowl-

edge, where you know your role – it creates a common understanding of what you are supposed to do,” Fernandez added. Small Movement Control Teams are at the forefront of receiving the equipment. Systems like the Distributional Retrograde Adaptive Planning and Execution Management, or DRAM, Single Mobility System and National Radio Frequency-In-Transit Visibility server expand the capabilities of logisticians at the ports. “You hear about these things, but you don’t use them,” said Sgt. Brandon Peterson, a junior logistician with 1181st Deployment Distribution Support Team, 598th Transportation Brigade. “So, once we get that handson experience it helps us with our job. As long as you know how to use these systems, you can fall into a position easily.” “It gives you a broader view of your job as a logistician,” he added. The workshop helped synchronize use of the multiple digital equipment tracking platforms used by U.S. Army Europe logisticians. Organizers hope to continue workshops like this to build readiness and increase efficiency in sustainment operations.

Mother’s Day by Jutta Lausberg-Saam 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs “Thank you Mom.” These three words cannot be said enough and on Mother’s Day we should also express our gratitude in other ways. In many countries, it has become customary to celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May. Mother’s Day originated in the United States. Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis founded a mother’s movement in 1865 and initiated a “Mother’s Day Meeting” where mothers could talk about current issues. Her daughter, Anna Maria Jarvis, called for Mother’s Day on May 12, 1907. In a church, she organized a devotional to mark the second anniversary of her mother’s death. Five hundred white carnations were distributed to other mothers as a symbol of love for their mother outside the church. On May 8, 1914, the U.S. Congress called for a permanent celebration and President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May, as a sign of love for the mother, as the official Mother’s Day.

Mother’s Day is not a public holiday in Germany, but a highly regarded event that many families traditionally celebrate. Children throughout the world behave extremely well and do something

nice such as preparing breakfast, give cards, flowers or handcrafted items and other gifts. Lavish gifts shouldn’t take center stage. It makes sense for a mother to spend this day surrounded by the family. Making

time for the mother, listening to her and pampering her should be the focus on Mother’s Day. Mother’s Day is a wonderful opportunity to say thank you for the mother’s caring support.

Garrison environmental, firefighters conduct HAZMAT training by Mary Ann Davis Installation Management Command Europe Public Affairs U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz environmental engineers and firefighters conducted hazardous material spill training with Defense Logistics Agency personnel to hone response procedures and strengthen the installation/tenant partnership at Germersheim Army Depot, May 3. Garrison members served as technical advisers during the training scenario that tested the tenant unit’s ability to control, divert and contain HAZMAT spills to ensure they were capable of mitigating these types of environmental emergencies. Melissa Malakos, USAG RP Directorate of Public Works Environmental Engineer, emphasized how the recent exercise gave responders the opportunity to practice and critique their own performance. “The training was very much hands on, using spill response supplies and making the required notification calls for assistance,” she said. She further explained that the DPW Environmental Management Division tends to do this type of on-site training in two parts. “First, we play out the spill scenario with little instruction — as if it were to happen without notice during the normal work day. This allows the unit’s environmental officers and safety man-

agers to identify areas for improvement in the training they provide their unit members,” she explained. “Afterward, we talk through what happened during the response, discuss what could be corrected and then repeat the same spill event to watch the improvements.” This training is important to ensure personnel know how to respond during an actual spill scenario, where emergency supplies are and how they are used and to validate leader roles, said Lt. Col. Jonathan Ackiss, DLA Distribution Europe commander. “I trust our workers have a solid base

of classroom training and by combining this with hands-on training, we’ll achieve a holistic training effect,” the commander said. “A critical component of this training and our HAZMAT awareness is the role of the GAD Fire Department and garrison environmental team. By working as partners, we can reduce the impact to the community and environment — you only achieve this by conducting training.” In real-world situations, garrison firefighters stand ready to respond to HAZMAT incidents within five minutes to employ all necessary counter-

measures if a major spill cannot be handled by a tenant unit’s initial responders at the scene. “There are several measures in place to assist GAD Fire Department with HAZMAT spill containment,” said Germersheim Army Depot Assistant Fire Chief Michael Hill. “If a spill occurs, barriers are installed in facilities to prevent run off and absorbent materials are applied to contain spilled matter. There are also a variety of tools and equipment to block or shut off sewer lines. Additionally, there are sewer storage reservoirs installed to control the flow of spilled material.” Malakos said the more responses and procedures that are practiced, the more likely a real situation will be handled well. “This training was a benefit to all involved. It emphasized the response of those who were truly first on the scene at the spill site,” she said. “The only way first responders can really get familiar with the emergency supplies and how they work is by using them. These types of hands-on sessions allow practice without realworld consequences.” Keeping the environment safe is a high priority, Ackiss said. “Our ultimate goal is that our workers, leaders and partners have a high level of trust in their training and in one another to provide the best cumulative response possible,” the commander concluded.

Cautionary tips for home-based businesses Americans who engage in homebased business activities here in Germany are subject not only to U.S. law, but also to German taxes and regulations. Your protections under the NATO Status of Forces Agreement do not extend to your self-employed business activity. The only benefit derived from SOFA status is that you do not need a residence permit (“Aufenthaltserlaubnis”) or work permit (“Arbeitserlaubnis”), thanks to the German Supplementary Agreement to the NATO SOFA. If you lose your SOFA status and intend to remain in Germany (for example, if you retire here), you must obtain these permits. To set up your home-based business properly, you should contact the local trade supervision office (“Gewerbeamt”) to find out if your business needs to be registered with them. While some for-profit activities require registration, others do not. The “Gewerbeamt” for the City of Kaiserslautern is located at Willy-Brandt-Platz 1. If your business needs to be registered, you will be asked to fill out a questionnaire and pay a small registration fee. Thereafter, the “Gewerbeamt” will inform the German Finance Office (“Finanzamt”) of your newly registered business. The “Gewerbeamt” will also inform you if any special permits are required to perform your business activity.

If your business is considered a “handicraft,” you may also want to consult the local Chamber of Handicrafts (“Handwerkskammer”). In Kaiserslautern this office is located at Am Altenhof 15. If you are dealing with food items, you should contact the local Health Office (“Gesundheitsamt”); in Kaiserslautern this office is located on Pfaffstrasse 40. If it turns out that your business does not need to be registered with the “Gewerbeamt,” you have to contact the German Finance Office (“Finanzamt”) yourself. The office for Kaiserslautern is located at Eisenbahnstrasse 56 and the office for Landstuhl is at Kaiserstrasse 51. A business activity has to be registered with the local “Finanzamt” so that it can be assigned a tax identification number (“Steueridentifikationsnummer”). Since the German Finance Office will only answer general questions, you should consider hiring a German tax consultant (“Steuerberater”). In doing so, you should stress your special NATO SOFA status, allowing you to remain subject to “limited taxation” (“beschränkte Steuerpflicht”) by the German government. You may want to refrain from declaring yourself an ordinary resident of Germany which subjects you to unlimited German taxation (“unbeschränkte Steuerpflicht”). Doing so could backfire and subject all of your worldwide income to German taxation. Your business’ profits will be

subject to German income tax (“Einkommensteuer”). On your U.S. tax return you will also have to report that income but you should be able to exclude it as foreign-earned income. Furthermore, German value added tax (VAT or “Umsatzsteuer”) and municipal trade tax (“Gewerbesteuer”) could be charged. However, the latter two taxes probably won’t be relevant to you as they have high annual thresholds and/or optout options. For example, the municipal trade tax has a threshold of 24,500 euro and the German VAT has an opt-out option in case your turnovers will be small, totaling no more than 17,500 euro per year. As far as your German income taxation is concerned, you will have to maintain a balance sheet (expenses vs. income) in order to calculate your profits. Everything must be in writing and well-documented. Don’t throw away any receipts or bills even after you have filed your German tax return. Instead of an itemized list of business expenses, you may consider taking a flat deduction for your expenses (e.g., no more than 20 percent of your income). This would facilitate the filing process if accepted by the “Finanzamt,”

which will depend on your type of business. You should also realize that it is illegal to use privileges derived from your NATO SOFA status for your private business. For example, you cannot use your APO mailing address, your USAREUR-plated car, or customs and tax-free goods for your private business. These would violate customs laws and could adversely affect your privileges. Itemized deductions for such items cannot be made, so the flat deduction mentioned above might be your best option. The Legal Assistance Office is prohibited from rendering case-specific advice on German tax laws for private businesses. As mentioned above, your best option may be to hire a German “Steuerberater,” particularly since your German tax return will have to be e-filed, using German tax software. Also, you should remember to deregister once you end your private business activity in Germany.

ments will be given by Mayor Beate Kimmel at 11 a.m. Throughout the day, visitors will have the opportunity to sample a variety of different foods. Ramstein boys, girls sweep Vilseck; Royals boys up record to 10-0 Ramstein Second Baseman Syd Smith beats the throw to the plate against Vilseck. The Royals swept the double header. Photo by Tammy Rudolph Hollenbeck

by Robert Baldwin contributing writer Winning is hard. The Arizona Cardinals can attest to that. So can Wile E. Coyote. Or ask any team that plays a Ramstein boys squad that involves teamwork, a ball and the legal use of hands. After Friday’s sweep of Vilseck, 7-6 and 16-0, the undefeated Euro champs in football and basketball and are now 10-0 in baseball this spring. The streak has been anything but mundane. The opener against Vilseck confirmed that the Royals have a definite flair for the dramatic. “These boys carry themselves in a more mature manner than many other young teams,” Coach Osvaldo Garcia Carillo said. “They know what is at stake, which is to reach the European tournament as the number one seed! They know that they are really good, but they want to be better than good. The key is that these guys know me and how I react to adversity by staying cool, calm and collected, regardless of the situation. They know they have my trust 100 percent. The team is committed to our plan, and they won’t stop until we bring that championship back to Ramstein.” The

Euro tournament is dated May 23 to 25 in the KMC. Vilseck was supposed to be the next victim, but they were not buying it. With a crafty lefthanded pitcher and timely hitting, they entered the fourth inning at the Southside Gym field tied at four. They went down meekly in their half of the inning and, true to the script, Ramstein took advantage in the bottom of the inning and scored two more on a single to right center by freshman C.J. Delp and a double by Chris Gazaldo. With two outs, Miles Murphy cracked a fastball that took about a ten foot hop over the bag at second on the marginal Ramstein infield surface knocking in both base runners. The Falcons got two back in the fifth on a double ripped to right field following an error and a walk, then, after a strike out, put runners at first and second with two outs when the number nine hitter walked and the leadoff hitter legged out an infield single. But pitcher Tieran Shoffner squashed the rally when he fielded a squibber down the third base line barehanded and threw in one motion to nip the runner for the final out, game still tied. “We had a plan to try the arms

from the bullpen on this particular game,” Garcia Carillo said. “The pitches were not falling in desired locations. So, our pitching staff, for game one, missed a couple of pitches high, and the Falcons made us pay the price by hitting the ball in the gaps.” In the fifth, catcher Nathan Kranz opened with a walk and advanced to third on a Nate Smith double down the line in left. With runners on second, third and first base open, Vilseck chose to pitch to Kaden Romelski, who was hitless in the contest. But he never got the chance to be a hero when a Falcons breaking ball squirted away from the catcher. Kranz slid in with the winning run, 7-6. In the second game, the Royals picked up eight runs in the opening inning and never looked back, winning 16-0. The big blow was an opposite field home run by Guzaldo, who circled the bases with a grin on his face. Shoffner doubled off the fence in right and Makani Stanger also homered in the ballgame, which was halted after three innings. The Royals had seven hits and eight walks. Murphy and Jeremy Leclair combined on the mound, holding Vilseck hitless. Garcia Carillo said everything leads towards the European tourna-

May 10, 2019 ment later this month. He has the luxury of having a very talented young group and some juniors and seniors who show what it takes to win. “The upperclassmen have been an essential part of our success, especially in moments where the team is coming from adverse situations. We have a way to communicate effectively among the players and coaches. I always listen to their likes, wants and needs, and try to guide them through by acknowledging their concerns or ideas. The seniors have direct input and suggestions on our weekly plan and game plans because they are the ones on the field working together to win games,” he said. Tomorrow, Ramstein travels to second place Wiesbaden for a doubleheader that will play big in the seeding for the Euro tournament in the KMC May 23 to 25. On the girls’ side, one can close the eyes and tell which team is batting. The dugout of the team at the plate sounds like the chorus from a Wagnerian opera with call and reply and a cacophony of sound. In the second game, Ramstein cruised to a 17-7 victory. But in Ramstein’s razor thin 14-13 victory over Vilseck in the opener, those sounds got progressively louder, especially in the heartstopping last inning. It looked like a Ramstein blowout at the outset. The Royals scored six in the first and batted around, the big hit a triple by shortstop Paige Nielsen. But Vilseck’s core of experienced players chipped away with strong hitting and took advantage of the opportunities it was afforded and after the sixth, the contest got very exciting very quickly. The Royals took a 14-9 lead into the final inning. The Falcons led off with an infield single and added another base runner when Ramstein second baseman Syd Smith fielded a ground ball and tried to get the force out at second. But the throw was low, handcuffed the shortstop, and both runners were safe. They both advanced on a passed ball and were plated by a double off the left center field wall by leadoff hitter Cecelia Jackson. Following the first out, a liner to third base, Vilseck got to within two when a single brought the run around. The Royals got the second out on a line drive caught by Smith. The runner at first advanced on a wild pitch, putting the run in scoring position. Freshman pitcher Lauryn Szczygiel got the batter to hit the ball back to her, but her throw was wide at first and the runner came home. Vilseck trailed by one with the

May 10, 2019 tying run at bat, dangerous Rebekah Heckert. Szcyzgiel challenged her with the fastball and Heckert hit it hard. But Szczygiel stopped the one bouncer and ran it half way to first before tossing underhand for the final out and preserving the 14-13 victory. “You continue to play the way that you practice and as long as you play for the outs and you work on your fundamentals and you continue to work through the fundamentals, the game will take care of itself,” coach Thomas Wright said between games.

Wright is not normally one to focus on just one individual, but he admitted that recent transplant catcher Mykel Taylor is something special, both defensively and with the bat. Taylor is like a coach on the field. She is the glue that holds it all together. She blocks balls in the dirt artistically. She dares the other team’s runners to take the extra base on her howitzer of an arm and she is vocal in her approach to her teammates. Most importantly, she steps up and takes charge. Her assertive demeanor is

ideal for the young Royals team. “She came to us as kind of a surprise, a very good surprise,” Wright said with a laugh. “We are thankful she is here. She has worked into the team and meshed with the other girls really well and I think she and the other girls are coming together and starting to play together well.” In the fifth, Taylor picked out a fastball on the inside part of the plate and hit a bomb over the fence in left. The following inning she straightened out an outside pitch and hit a rocket off the fence in right center. She also doubled in the six run first inning. She is a threat to hit the ball hard every time she is at the plate. Defensively, she kept everything in front of her and knew how and when to talk to her young pitcher. In the sixth, when the game was still in the balance, the Vilseck coach called time and said Szczygiel was doing something illegal with her arms as she pitched. A lengthy time out and discussion ensued between the umpires and coaches. Szczygiel’s face showed she was confused about the call since she had done nothing differently that inning than she had the entire game. Taylor trotted out to the mound, called the infield over, demonstrated to her pitcher what the

Page 17 argument was about, calmed everybody and made sure they were on the same page. “We think that Mykel is an all around athlete. She plays well. She has played ball for a long time. She played in the States (Virginia) on a traveling team,” Wright said between games of the doubleheader. Nielsen had three doubles and scored three runs. Left fielder Jayda Roberts had two doubles and a first inning RBI triple. They are at Wiesbaden on Saturday.

Home alone — rules for dogs by FindItGuide.com We all love our four-legged friends. They show us unconditional love when we get home and they are more than happy to give us a lick on the cheek when we are down. We go through great lengths to take them with us, even when we move halfway around the world. When you land in Germany, there are many privileges that accompany dog ownership. Bringing your dog to a beer garden on a nice sunny day is one of those great privileges (it really helps if “Fido” is trained). With great privilege comes great responsibility. Germany has clear rules within the German Animal Welfare Act regarding your dog with regard to quality of life, leaving them at home alone and many other topics. Here is a quick reference list of some hot topics to refer to: • A dog should not stay alone without being walked for more than five hours (recommended dog walking time is at least one hour per day).

• You are not allowed to chain up the dog within the apartment or keep it locked in a separate room. • Owners should not keep their dogs on balconies, in basement rooms and bathrooms when the owner leaves the house. • Dog owners must pick up excrement left from their dog during walks. • Dog owners must keep their dogs on a leash while walking them on public streets in housing areas. Violators may be punished with fines up to 5,000 euro. • Dog owners need to make sure that their pets don’t bark and whine during quiet hours: 1 to 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Outside these hours, dog owners must ensure that dog noises do not last longer than 10 consecutive minutes (or more than 30 minutes cumulatively per day). There is an easy to understand English version of the German Animal Welfare Act put out by Michigan State University at https://www.animallaw.info/statute/ germany-cruelty-german-animal-welfare-act

Story and photos by Leonie Milde MilitaryInGermany.com Isle of Skye The Isle of Skye is one of those places you simply do when you’re in Scotland. As is often the case, the reason it’s on every traveller’s itinerary is that it’s so beautiful and while those that would like to think of themselves as serious travellers (myself included) sometimes like to skip the touristy destinations, Skye shouldn’t have to pay the price for its own popularity. A bridge conveniently connects it to the mainland so you don’t need to get on a ferry and it really isn’t that big either so you can cover most of it in two days. However, there is plenty to see if you wanted to stay for a week or more; you will not run out of new hiking trails and spots to explore. The island is a lot greener than for example Glencoe and specked with waterfalls, mountains, lochs and glens as far as the eye can see. Fairy Pools and Kilt Rock are some of the most spectacular waterfalls on the island, the latter falling down a magnificent 90 meter cliff while the former comes with a scenic circa 5km walk.

The island’s main city is Portree. Its colorful little houses either glisten in the sunshine or brighten up a rainy day so it’s a win-win town all the way. You will find shops, restaurants, a large supermarket and accommodation here. The Old Man of Storr is a classic hike most people do when they’re there. It only takes an hour or so to get to the top but even if you only walk halfway up, you will be rewarded with fantastically serene views that make you feel like you’re on top of the world. The “official car park” (anywhere you can find a spot) is only a fifteen minute drive from Portree. Talisker Distillery Talisker is a famous single malt whiskey distilled right there on the island and one of the oldest distilleries in the country. Legend has it that the roughness of its shores are captured in every drop of the liquor and, honestly, if you believe in it strongly enough, you really can taste it. There are tours of the distillery every half hour, including a small tasting.

Oban We are slowly heading back south but there is one more spot we want to see. This little fishing town is also known as the gateway to the Hebrides, which will be covered in a future post. Great restaurants, shops and their very own distillery are only a few of the highlights as they also offer a number of boat trips

to seal banks as well as other sightseeing boat tours. Bonus: I saw what was perhaps the most beautiful sunset I’ve ever seen in Oban. Right outside my hostel door, the sun set over the ocean and little ducks floated on the water looking at the sky, revelling in the sublimity of nature. It was a moment of absolute bliss.

Keep in mind that those are only my personal must-sees in the west. There are countless other places worth visiting and I still think one day I might pack a backpack and get back on these roads for more than a few weeks until I’ve sampled every whiskey, asked every sheep to let me pet it and tasted every scone. In the words of Robert Burns: My heart’s in the highlands. Where to Eat The Artisan Café is an old church that was recycled into a charming café with gorgeous old windows, sweet treats, lunches and a small gift shop. Depending on the season, you can either sit in the sunshine and enjoy a magnificent mountain view or cozy up near the fireplace inside. If you’re driving from Glasgow towards Glencoe, it is inevitably on your route. However, it is a bit hidden so you will need to be on the lookout for their sign. Luss (Loch Lomond) and Fort William (post Glencoe) are also great towns if you prefer a selection of dining places but there are cafés and restaurants along

the way, too, so no need for starvation anxiety. Getting There Your best call is renting a car in Glasgow and driving to these destinations in the order I listed them in to make sure you don’t miss any high(lands)lights. Getting around with public transport is also an option, for there are buses and trains everywhere. Where to Stay Check out booking.com or airbnb for cozy B&Bs away from the main cities. SYHA and Hostelling International offer private rooms and beds for lower prices in both rural areas and bigger villages. My absolute favorite hostel was Ratagan, only a few minutes’ drive from the bridge to Skye. It is located in the middle of nowhere with a stunning view of the Five Sisters of Kintail, a mountain range popular with hikers and lookers like me. Waking up to this view was one of the greatest joys on the whole trip. No construction noises, no traffic, nowhere to be but in the moment. Aside from the occasional snoring roommate, this place is as peaceful as can be and ideal for becoming one with nature. Author’s profile: Leonie is a poetry-loving literature student with a passion for small towns, road trips, and self-timering photos of her back where she acts like she has no idea a photo is being taken even though she just spent 25 minutes leaning her phone against a patch of grass. When she isn’t hopping from one bargain flight to the next, she is making sure you’re hanging with the locals and staying updated on events in your area.
