Air Force formalizes policy on retention of non-deployable Airmen

Airmen who have been non-deployable for more than 12 consecutive months will be notified by their chain of command and evaluated for retention either through referral to the Disability Evaluation System or consideration for administrative separation. non-deployable service members, the Air Force implemented its guidance in a memo signed Feb. 19. Airmen who have been non-deployable for more than 12 consecutive

USAG RP fire department receives 2018 IMCOM-Europe awards by Mary Ann Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz Directorate of Emergency Services Fire Department has once again proven its dedication to military and local communities with two Installation Management Command Directorate-Europe awards. Germersheim Army Depot firefighter Sven Mayer recently earned the

2018 IMCOM-Europe Emergency Medical Service Provider of the Year and the USAG RP Fire Department was named IMCOM-Europe’s 2018 Large Fire Department of the Year. Mayer began his career as a garrison firefighter in 2008 and later became an emergency medical technician in December 2014 because he enjoyed helping people. “My interest in medical care started through a colleague I knew in

Heidelberg,” Mayer explained. “I wanted to learn more so I could provide more assistance.” His penchant for learning was evident in his completion of several Regional Fire Training Center certifications and National Incident Management Systems accreditations, ensuring compliance with host nation and U.S. training requirements. “I try to pass on my knowledge to colleagues so we can do a good job as a

team,” said the EMT, who volunteers as a civilian firefighter and at the German Red Cross in his off-duty time. Although there were many reasons why Mayer won the award, one event stood out — he saved someone’s life. Last year, Mayer and his team responded to a medical emergency on GAD where an individual suffered a severe cardiovascular episode. When See IMCOMEUROPE AWARDS, Page 2

steps to maintain their readiness,” stated the memo signed by the secretary, chief of staff and chief master sgt. of the Air Force. “Commanders will ensure Airmen understand what is required and ensure the necessary resources are available to achieve our goal of a 95 percent or higher deployable rate within their units. The defense of our nation requires Airmen and the Air Force be ready to deploy at all times.” Airmen exempted from this policy include those who are pregnant or postpartum, in a training or transient status, deployable with limitations, and are filling positions exempted by the secretary of defense. Additionally, the new Air Force policy lists adoption, humanitarian assignment, legal action, sole survivor/sur-

viving family member/deferred from hostile force zone, conscientious objector, absent without leave, or pending administrative separation as categories that are also exempt from this policy. For some Airmen, being fit for duty means deploying to an austere environment at a moment’s notice; for others, it means being fit to execute wartime missions from home station. In both scenarios, commanders remain responsible for ensuring their Airmen are fit for duty. “Being ready to go is in our DNA,” said Lt. Gen. Brian Kelly, Air Force deputy chief of staff for Manpower, Personnel and Services. “It comes from our expeditionary roots as Airmen.” The Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Manpower and

Reserve Affairs will serve as the final retention approval authority, with one exception. Only the secretary of the Air Force may disapprove retention requests for combat-wounded Airmen who have been evaluated through the Disability Evaluation System and whose reason for being non-deployable is a result of their combat wounds. “As a member of the profession of arms, all Airmen must be ready to execute their wartime missions,” said Shon Manasco, assistant secretary of the Air Force for Manpower and Reserve Affairs. “Retaining Airmen who meet our standards to deploy is a top priority.”

performed their work flawlessly. “Mr. Mayer is an outstanding firefighter who is committed to serving the Army,” said USAG RP Fire Chief Marshall Fiedler. “There’s no better feeling than knowing that we saved a man’s life that day. It’s something that all firefighters of USAG RheinlandPfalz can be proud of.” While being a firefighter and EMT is tough work, Mayer said he enjoys his work because “it’s an important and well-respected job in our society, and through my work, I feel I can give something back.” The USAG RP DES Fire Department also received accolades for protecting IMCOM-Europe’s largest garrison of 41,000 people on 29 sites. In 2018, garrison fire department professionals responded to more than 900 calls for service to include 22 fires with no loss of life. Its fast-acting fire teams traveled great distances demonstrating an aggregate response time at 88 percent compliance rate — the best in Europe. Garrison firefighters responded to several emergency calls to include a solar panel fire atop a facility. Their expertise and quick actions resulted in less than $80,000 in building dam-

age. Fire teams also conducted 385 fire drills in garrison facilities and led 14 joint exercises with local communities. Always committed to professional development, garrison fire teams earned 65 certifications and received 35 NIMS accreditations online, saving more than $20,000 in training funds. Garrison fire departments also implemented a job qualification standard so newly hired firefighters were armed with knowledge and skills prior to formal training to enhance their qualifications and duty performance.

“I’m very proud to be a part of our firefighters, fire officers and our organization. Our department is young and has rapidly grown with the garrison,” Fiedler said. “Each member of our team continues to impress me as we strive each day to provide the best customer service possible to our Soldiers, Army families and civilians. We are looking forward to making more progress and continue to work to serve our community.” Good luck to Mayer and the garrison fire department as they compete at the IMCOM headquarters level.

86 CES Fire Protection Battalion Chief earns Airlifter of the Week

U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Cody Simpson, 86th Civil Engineer Squadron Fire Protection battalion chief, is recognized by Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, 86th Airlift Wing commander, for being the 86th AW’s Airlifter of the Week at Ramstein Air Base, Feb. 21. Photo by Airman 1st Class Noah Coger

by Kelly Sanders 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs An 86th Civil Engineer Squadron Fire Protection battalion chief received the honor of being Ramstein’s Airlifter of the Week, Feb. 21. Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, 86th Airlift Wing commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Ernesto Rendon, 86th AW command chief, praised Tech. Sgt. Cody Simpson for his abil-

ity to step up and run command and control for one of the largest military fire departments within the Air Force. For the last two weeks Simpson was assigned Assistant Chief of Operations duties, overseeing daily scheduling, training, and emergency response operations for 64 firefighters across the three districts and seven fire stations. His leadership was put to the

test as he mitigated a foam system activation in a hangar. In a separate instance, he led a suspicious package response. “It feels good to be recognized. I couldn’t have done it without a great team and great leadership,” said Simpson. Simpson’s ability to accept a challenge extends beyond the job. Last year, he achieved the gold level German Armed Forces Proficiency

Badge in accordance with German military standards. The badge is a decoration of the German Bundeswehr that U.S. military members can earn by accomplishing various tests of physical strength and showing proficiency in marksmanship. The Airlifter of the Week program recognizes Ramstein Airmen who, through hard work and dedication, make the 86th AW the World’s Best Wing.

You’ve got mail … faster by Airman 1st Class Milton Hamilton 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 786th Force Support Squadron post office has a way to sort letter-mail more efficiently, allowing its customers to receive mail faster. Each box number is now affiliated with a special four digit extension code that allows postal staff to sort through mail quicker. Service members or any Ramstein personnel that have a mailbox at the North or Southside post offices may add the special designated extension code, after the standard zip code that is synonymous with all Ramstein personnel.

“If everyone on the base uses the extension code, it would make all first class letters come in order, which saves approximately two hours of sorting time,” said Airman 1st Class Dilan Harvey, 786th FSS military postal clerk. There are certain periods during the year that postal staff highly recommend customers use the extension code. Harvey said the benefits of the four digit extension code are really apparent during Christmas, when the post office is handling thousands of letters. Customers who would like to know their four digit extension code can visit or call 786th FSS customer service.

Garrison hosts local officials for Germersheim tour

A Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Europe official provides a tour of their main warehouse during a community relations visit of the facility at Germersheim Army Depot, Feb. 21. Several German community leaders were invited to tour the tenant units on the installation to build and strengthen local partnerships.

Story and photo by Stefan Alford U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Local elected leaders and host nation emergency services representatives visited the installation in Germersheim Feb. 21 to learn more about what goes on behind the gates and fences of one of their largest local employers in the area. With more than 1,000 civilian employees, an influx of more than 30 million euro annually into the local economy, and more than 70 million euro planned in military construction projects in the next two to five years, the depot serves as a major industrial hub in the area. It’s the central distribution point for several major Department of Defense organizations that supply Soldiers and families throughout Europe and Africa with supplies, food items and retail products. “We appreciate the chance to be here today and share information,” said Dr. Fritz Brechtel, Germersheim county commissioner and administration chief. “It is good for us to get to know about the U.S. presence and what is being done here. The brief-

ings help us to understand. We are very thankful for the invitation to this event.” Other distinguished guests included Marcus Schaile, Germersheim mayor; Frank Leibeck, Union Community Lingenfeld mayor; Dr. Sascha Hofmann, Germersheim deputy mayor; Gert Müller, Germersheim city councilor; Peter Beyer, Lingenfeld city councilor; Wolfgang Zöller, Germersheim chief of police; Sandra Giertzsch, Germersheim deputy chief of police; and Steffen Andres, Lingenfeld fire chief. The depot is one of 29 sites and installations that belong to U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz, headquartered in Kaiserslautern, and the community relations visit was hosted by garrison commander Col. Jason T. Edwards to continue to build and strengthen local partnerships. “Although Germersheim is the farthest away of the many sites in our footprint, we make an effort to stay in touch with our local counterparts here as much as we can,” said Edwards, citing the garrison leader-

ship’s recent participation in the city’s National Day of Mourning ceremony and New Year’s reception. “These events and today’s visit help to maintain the close relationships we’ve established over the years,” added Edwards. “We try to conduct these kinds of open house gatherings every few years at each of our locations, from Baumholder to Mannheim, and sites in between. It’s a great opportunity for open discussion on mutual interests.” At Germersheim, the U.S. Army depot houses the distribution centers for the Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Europe activity, which provides logistics support to operational readiness; the Army and Air Force Exchange Service, where all commercial products bound for U.S. forces shopping facilities are initially warehoused; and the Defense Commissary Agency, from which most standard food products are dispersed to the military grocery store system across Europe, Southwest Asia and Africa. The day’s events included briefings and a tour of the DLA headquar-

ters building and warehouse, a windshield tour of the AAFES and DeCA sites, and a stop at the garrison’s fire department where Edwards highlighted the joint response between U.S. and German firefighters during last summer’s minor roof fire on the DLA’s main administration building. “Our firefighters were on scene in less than five minutes and the Lingenfeld firefighters arrived shortly after that,” he said. “It was a successful example of teamwork borne from training.” “The cooperation between our firefighters and the fire department of the Germersheim Army Depot is working perfectly,” said Mayor Leibeck. “It’s amazing.” The Germersheim site is located on an old German training area and officially established as an Army depot in 1951 with a mission to store, receive, and issue equipment and supplies in support of U.S. Army in Europe. It was selected due to its ideal location near river, rail, air, and ground transportation ports, which continue to make it a valuable asset and major distribution hub.

Remembering the Wereth 11

Airmen from the 786th Civil Engineer Squadron and 86th Logistics Readiness Squadron salute during a ceremony to commemorate the Wereth 11 in Wereth, Belgium, March 24, 2017. A permanent memorial stands in the exact location in the small village of Wereth where 11 African American Soldiers were found tortured and executed by the Nazi SS. The 11 Soldiers were a part of the 333rd Field Artillery Battalion when they were separated during the Battle of the Bulge, and later captured by the Nazi SS. Photo by Tech Sgt. Sara Keller

by 2nd Lt. James Hanley 700th Contracting Squadron As Black History Month comes to a close, it is our duty to reflect on the many contributions and awesome impact that Black people have made. Throughout the annals of history, there has been no shortage of scientific prowess, artistic ability, or rousing courage in the Black community. Unfortunately, this means that there have been some who are not routinely highlighted in the history books, and it is our job to keep their stories alive. One such group is the Wereth 11. On Dec. 16, 1944, the Germans launched their last great offensive against the Western Allies through the Ardennes Forest of eastern Belgium. It would become known as the Battle of the Bulge. The brutality of the Battle of the Bulge is well documented. With instances like the Malmedy Massacre, it has been said that the ferociousness in this battle mirrored that of the Eastern Front (e.g. The Battle of Stalingrad). The initial priority was to stabilize the 50-mile front that was under

attack and many of the units tasked with this duty were all-black (the United States Armed Forces were not desegregated until July 26, 1948, when President Harry S. Truman issued Executive Order 9981). One of these all-black units was the 333rd Field Artillery Battalion. On Dec. 17, 1944, a number of men from the 333rd were overrun by a contingent of German soldiers accompanied by an armor unit. Chaos ensued, as German infantrymen descended upon the camp site. Those who escaped fled toward the woods for cover, but the freezing rain and mud severely hampered their mobility. As groups broke up to head in different directions and continue to evade capture, a group of 11 men headed west toward American lines. These men continued to evade at the edge of the tree line for several hours before deciding to ask for help. They eventually made it to a small Belgian village called Wereth. Shortly after emerging from the tree line, white flag in tow, the group was taken in by the Langer family. Harboring this group was an incred-

ibly dangerous decision on the part of the Langers. Wereth and the surrounding area had been a part of Germany before post-World War I annexations. There also remained a number of residents that identified as German and were sympathetic to the Nazi cause. Later that same evening, an SS convoy descended upon the house; they had likely been tipped off by one of the German sympathizer families in the village. The men emerged from the house with their hands up, likely to avoid any harm being done to their harborers. The SS patrol forced the men to run toward a small field outside of the village where they proceeded to kill all 11 men. In February 1945, an American infantry patrol was directed to the site by villagers, and they discovered the frozen bodies of the victims. From their remains, it was evident that the SS had savagely beaten and tortured the men prior to killing them. Although historians disagree over whether the SS patrol’s actions were race related, the degree of torture and disfigurement suggests that race played a part in what took place,

keeping consistent with the perverse racial ideology of the Third Reich. For many years, the story of the Wereth 11 was conflated with the Malmedy Massacre, which took place during the same battle. In fact, the original report documented a dozen similar massacres during the Battle of the Bulge but did not include any reference to the killings in Wereth. In the past two decades, a lot of work has been done to unravel the mystery of what happened to those men that day. It wasn’t until recently had there been enough information to truly highlight the sacrifices that Black Americans made in World War II’s European theater. The exposure of this nearly forgotten war crime, resulted in a resolution (H. Con.Res.68) being introduced in January 2014 in Congress. The resolution sought to correct the omission in the 1949 report and appropriately recognize the dedicated service and sacrifice of the Wereth 11. Though these men did not live to see themselves truly free, by remembering them and their sacrifice we can appropriately add them to the long list of heroes who died for freedom.

Did you know: March is brain injury awareness month? by Dr. Kendra Jorgensen-Wagers and Vanessa Young Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic The month of March is dedicated to brain injury awareness and prevention, and the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic is spreading awareness to help the local military community to know more about brain injuries, how to obtain educational material, and where to seek care. TBI or concussion is referred to as the signature injury of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq because many service members experienced blast or vehicle accidents that resulted in a concussive event during that time; however, brain injuries can happen to anybody. Here are some tips to help you prevent and recognize a concussion: Did you know? Each year there are over 1.7 million TBIs reported, and data from 2016 indicates that seven percent of U.S. children have suffered a severe concussive event during their life time. The Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center recorded a total of 383, 947 of U.S. service members diagnosed with TBI in the past 18 years. TBI cases continue to increase keeping them one of the most common causes of neurological disorders worldwide. Did you know that mTBI can be caused by a multitude of types of accidents and injuries? Primary examples of TBI include slip and fall accidents, bicycle accidents, sports inju-

ries, motor vehicle accidents or combative training. TBI occurs across a spectrum of severity from mild to severe and mTBI is a widespread injury among civilians and service members. Mild TBI is defined by the DVBIC as “a blow or jolt to the head that disrupts the normal function of the brain. It may knock you out briefly or for an extended period of time, or make you feel confused or ‘see stars’ (alteration of consciousness).” It is important to keep in mind that not all blows to the head will cause a concussion, but sometimes that blow to the head can be more than a concussion as well.

Sometimes its symptoms are non-specific and commonly occur in the general population. Many patients fail to recognize and report a brief loss of consciousness. Often, individuals with mTBI do not seek medical care at the time of injury, but they present to their primary care physician days, weeks, or even months after the injury with complaints of persistent symptoms. Furthermore, diagnosis of mild brain injury may be missed in the face of more dramatic physical injuries. Many patients may appear unimpaired and be discharged, only to notice the extent of their symptoms once they attempt to return to normal functioning.

Did you know that mTBI is often referred to as a “silent epidemic?”

Did you know that going to the emergency room or seeing your

primary care physician following a potential concussive event is important to receive the evaluation and the education needed to for a quick recovery? Seeking care following an injury event helps you to get the right education and care quickly to ensure full recovery and return to duty. Anyone who has had a concussive event is encouraged to contact their primary care provider or to self-refer to the TBI Clinic at LRMC should they have any questions about mTBI. The clinic’s goal is to ensure that each member of the military community is evaluated appropriately and appreciates the necessary steps in recovering from a concussive event. The LRMC TBI Clinic, along with the primary care clinics throughout Europe,

have TBI experts who can assist service members, veterans, and family members with mTBI screening, evaluation and treatment. Getting care for mTBI and understanding how to manage recovery is imperative. Ultimately the final goal is to ensure that each member of the military community is evaluated appropriately and knows the necessary steps in recovering from a concussive event. Rest is a vital part of treatment, but helping symptoms to resolve and gradually resume activities are key components for effective recovery. Your primary care physician or TBI clinic provider can assist you in understanding this and helping you get back to resuming your duties and activities. Did you know? You are not alone. We want our families and Service Members to recover quickly, sustain military readiness, and be able to maximize their quality of life. If you or a family member experience what you may think was a concussive event, seek care. Ask your physician questions and follow your physician's guidance in slowly returning to normal activity to ensure that the symptoms don’t recur. Think ahead toward prevention of accidents and use the appropriate protective gear to help protect your head. Helmets may not be “cool” but they are smart. You’ve only got one noggin, so please use it! For more information on the LRMC TBI Clinic, visit https://rhce.amedd.army.mil/ landstuhl/Services/tbi.html.

Ramstein, Baumholder boys european champions by Robert Baldwin Contributing Writer And the beat goes on. For the fifth straight time, the Ramstein boys basketball team was crowned Division 1 champions of the DODEA Europe Basketball League by downing Kaiserslautern 48-39, completing a hectic four-day tournament in Wiesbaden. Baumholder repeated as kings in Division 3 over top seeded Anspach 70-65, and Ramstein was runner up to Stuttgart 29-24 in the Division 1 girls championship game. Not since Heidelberg in the early 2000s has a European team been so dominant, and when the Royals go after number six next year, they will start the season with a 35-game unbeaten string at home. Those are dynasty-type numbers. Kaiserslautern’s boys spotted the Royals a 6-0 lead, then produced a 16-3 run to take a seven point lead at the end of the quarter. With juniors Isaak Pacheco and Tre Dotson sealing the boards and junior Ervin Johnson running the offense, the Raiders got three-point field goals from four different shooters. Kaiserslautern extended the lead to 22-9 to start the second, but Ramstein had been in this position many times before and, like so many times this season, started a run of their own. At the 4:50 mark, it was 22-12. Two minutes and 30 seconds later, with Jason Jones III working the boards and JJ Little pushing the ball upcourt, they trailed by one and took the lead

on a Fraley three pointer and led 27-25 at half. Vintage Ramstein. The Raiders’ Eric Santiago tied it early in the third, but it would be as close as the Raiders would get. Neither team was able to play uptempo and each possession was crucial. With Eaves and Jones working the boards for Ramstein and Dotson and Pacheco doing the same for Kaiserslautern, second shots were rare and both teams had to grind it out. A Johnson steal and layup made it 38-35 Ramstein, but Little countered with a strong move to the basket and then Fraley split the Raiders zone for a layup and it was a six-point lead. An Eaves basket on an inbounds made it an eight-point lead with less than two minutes left. Johnson hit a late three for Kaiserslautern to close it out. Any coach will say that winning one championship is difficult, but to repeat is even harder. Winning five straight is an incredible feat because the players wear a target on their backs and opponents gear up for the chance to knock them off their perch. So, for O’Connor, number five was so gratifying. “I used to look at the five banners in Heidelberg’s gym and think that is impossible (championship 2001-2005). We did not set out to tie that record, but we just took everything day by day,” he said. “When (the streak) got to three I started thinking about it, and it was a little bit surreal that we did it. It still seems impossible. We’ve had years where we had the most talented team. But we also

stole two where we shouldn’t have won but got hot at the right time.” For the Royals, it was a sweet swan song for seniors Naser Eaves and Gabe Fraley. Eaves, the Most Valuable Player in the tournament, thrilled the crowds throughout his career with his athleticism and flash while Fraley impressed as a gritty, hard-nosed workhorse during his Ramstein tenure. “You cannot replace those two,” O’Connor said. “They are Ramstein legends. Naser (Eaves) is the only player to win three MVP awards in Division 1 history. Gabe (Fraley) is the ultimate Royal work ethic wise, practice, work hard,” O’Connor added. For Kaiserslautern, it was another disappointing loss to Ramstein in the playoffs. Once again they started out quickly, but let Ramstein back into the game. “My game plan was to keep them guessing,” said Raiders Coach Corey Sullivan. “I wanted to throw something at them they’ve never seen, and keep switching defenses. The kids did their part excellently. However, it was too loud for me to keep switching defenses and so I changed up on that. That and I may have gotten too conservative when we got an early lead. And that may have hurt us. I take responsibility for that.” After another close finish with no title to show for it, what does he tell them now? “Tell them I love them. Tell them I’m proud of them. Tell them that they deserved it. Apologize for not being able to deliver better for them.” In the Division 3 final, Baumholder had a score to settle with Ansbach. Earlier in the year, the Bucs lost to them by 18 points. So the incentive, plus the quest for a second straight title, was there. The Cougars started with a 12-0 run and it looked like déjà vu, but Baumholder sophomore Chandler Piggé, the Division 3 Player of the Year, who one of the tournament coaches dubbed “the Man-Child,” overwhelmed Ansbach with a 30-point, double figures rebound game, including 11 points in the cru-

cial fourth quarter. He also got some much needed help from teammate Lawrence Huxtable, who added 17. But the victory happened because the team nailed 12 of 16 free throws and outscored Ansbach 19-13 in the fourth quarter to seal the deal. Andrew Ogden and Kevin Karmara combined for 46 for the Cougars. “Ansbach came out, they pressed hard, they played great defense, but we weren’t worried,” Piggé said. “We then played the best defense of our lives and stuck together as a team. We are family. That’s our motto and we stuck together as family. I may be standing here getting interviewed, but it is because of them that I am here.” Ironically, it was actually two losses that they took during the year to big school powers Kaiserslautern and Ramstein that prepared them for the title by showing them where they needed to improve. “It definitely helped. Even though we lost we got to see things better and allow us to play together better as a team so come Euros it helped us to get through and make it back to the championship game,” said Piggé.

Coach DeWayne Piggé agreed. “It helped tremendously because that was fine tuning for our game plan for what we needed to do. It helped the team come together more, balance, and chemistry-wise we improved,” he said. Every title is special, but it is usually the most recent that is most satisfying. “This one was sweeter,” Coach Piggé said. “Our backs were against the wall. Not many believed in us. But we stepped up to the charge. We were down 12 but we keep fighting. We don’t give up. Just keep grinding and that’s what our boys did.” In the girls finale, Ramstein and Stuttgart started the game like two heavyweights feeling each other out in the boxing ring. Neither team would give an inch and it was 10-10 at the half and 19 all after three. With 2:30 left in the in the fourth, with Ramstein leading 24-23 after a three pointer by Shamilia Johnson, Stuttgart ramped up its defensive aggression up front and physicality underneath and shut down the Raiders for the duration. Led by savvy point guard Adan Mahar, Stuttgart pounded the ball in to its big people and crashed the

March 1, 2019 boards, getting to the free throw line, making the last six clutch points to put a cap on the contest 29-24. Stuttgart Coach Robin Hess said that even though it was tied at halftime, she did not go into the locker room and rant and rave. She said she knows her girls, she knows what they are capable of and she walked out and let them figure it out. It worked. “We just decided we were not going let them beat us,” Mahar said. “We came out and played the best defense we have all year and got the victory.” Mahar’s maturity and leadership were evident. Her future includes a scholarship to Iowa State University to study in a Marine Corps program there. Ramstein received the runner up trophy. “We knew it was going to be a battle. Stuttgart is well coached and defensively so good,” Ramstein Coach Nathan Brewster said. “Our plan was to move the ball and attack gaps but, man, they were really good at shutting down gaps.” Brewster said that although they did not come out victorious, it was an education of sorts. “These girls work so hard, they overcame so much. We are the only team that beat Stuttgart all year. They learned that hard work pays off. We finished higher

than our seed. (In the tournament) we beat KTown, who beat us twice. We beat Naples which was redemption for last year. And we fell just a little bit short in the championship game.” Johnson led the Royals scoring with nine, including a key three pointer down the stretch. Kaiserslautern’s girls came home with the third place trophy after beating a strong and disciplined Naples team 28-21. The victory was special, but bittersweet, because it was the last time All Everything La’Jhanique Brown will wear the red and white. She was named to the All European team all four varsity years. “I want to play for the championship,” she said. “But at least we got to play for third and got it. We played together well as a team considering Naples is a very good team, they are very patient and they move the ball well.” Now that it is over, she knows what she did was special. “It’s all going to sink in when I get to college and realize that maybe there is no more. I am going to definitely miss it,” she said. “I have so many great memories but my favorite was senior night.” It is easy to see why. She scored 28, threw in a half court shot just before half and had a full gym of Kaiserslautern fans thanking her for what she accomplished.

The Pfennig Bazaar is known as the biggest flea market in the West Palatinate. Its name originates in the former German currency, which was Deutsch Mark and Pfennigs, today Euro and cents. This bazaar is the club’s biggest fundraising event. All proceeds will be donated to various German, American and international charities, the Federation of GermanAmerican Clubs in Germany and student exchange programs. In 2017, donations to the total amount of about €25,000 were made to USO, the Airmen’s Attic, scout groups and the GermanAmerican student exchange. The German-American Women’s Club was established in 1956. Meanwhile, other nationalities are included, and the name carries the word international as well.

“Our goal is to promote tolerance within cultures and international understanding, and foster friendship between German, American and other communities,” said Christine Schneider, club president. “We offer a variety of interest groups, to include literature, international cooking, reading lessons, handicrafts and traveling, and we organize evening events, concerts, trips and monthly gettogethers.” Club members also get involved in community activities. They take care of the kindergraves at Kaiserslautern’s main cemetery and support the Fisher House at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. For the Pfennig Bazaar, the club still needs donations, to include clothes for men, women, children, household goods, books, toys, electrical appliances and paint-

ings. Bulky items such as furniture, mattresses, skis and suitcases as well as shoes, underwear, curtains and 110V electrical items will not be accepted. Donations can be dropped 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday in the flower hall of the Gartenschau Kaiserslautern. The bazaar is also in dire need of volunteers for all the days listed above. If there are any individuals or organizations who can help, please contact Christine Schneider at 0160-99327090 or come by at any time. The Pfennig Bazaar is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. March 8, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 9 and 10.

AER celebrates 77 years of assisting Soldiers, families Story and photo by Mary Ann Davis U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs In 1942, Army Emergency Relief began as a private, nonprofit organization. Since then, the organization has helped more than 3.7 million Soldiers, retirees and families receive vital financial assistance and scholarships totaling 1.9 billion dollars and aims to provide more assistance during their annual campaign March 1 through May 15. “It’s What We Do” is this year’s AER theme, which speaks to its selfless mission of helping Soldiers and their families, said Kristin James, U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz AER coordinator and Army Community Service Financial Readiness Program manager. “AER is a commander’s tool to ensure individual Soldier readiness, which is a Soldier’s ability to fight and win the nation’s wars anytime, anywhere, under any conditions,” she explained. “Many times, people don’t know where to turn when they are going through an emergency financial crisis. Sometimes, they obtain high-interest loans that charge up to 300 percent interest. To prevent this, AER assistance is provided through interest-free loans and grants or a combination of both.” Some categories of assistance include: emergency travel, funeral expenses, vehicle repairs, cranial helmets, minor home repairs, rent, mortgage and more. When Soldiers experience financial difficulties, it has the potential to affect several aspects of their lives to include readiness, personal relationships and mental health. That’s why AER is committed to easing those burdens and taking care of Soldiers so they can focus on taking care of the mission. “AER is one of the most

important programs for helping Soldiers in need,” said USAG RP Command Sgt. Maj. Brett Waterhouse. “The purpose of the program, reflected in its title, is to help Soldiers who find themselves in an emergency situation by providing them with financial relief. What makes the program unique is that Soldiers fund it. Please donate today to this ‘Soldiers helping Soldiers’ program so there are funds available for those in need tomorrow.” From basic living expenses to emergency travel, AER brings financial assistance and stability to today’s Soldiers and retirees in need. Giving them a help-

ing ‘hand up’ is a part of what it means to be “There for Those Who Serve.” AER also brings the hope of a brighter future to Army spouses and children through scholarships, grants and interestf ree loans. The Spouse Education Assistance Program takes applications throughout the year, while the Major General James Ursano Scholarship Program accepts applications between January and early April to provide scholarships to dependent children. In fact, more than 10 percent of all AER assistance was distributed in the form of grants. In 2018, 8 million dollars was awarded

to 3,223 dependent children and spouses. “Army Emergency Relief is 100 percent funded through donations, and anyone can donate,” James said. “There are many methods of donating, and you can do this by reaching out to your AER Campaign Unit

Representative or making a donation online at www. aerhq.org.” For more information about AER, visit www.aerhq.org or call Army Community Service at 541-9000 or commercial at 0611-143-5419000.

Renting an apartment...with no kitchen! By FindItGuide.com I remember looking for a place to live when I first arrived in Germany and coming across a bizarre occurance on more than one occasion. What was odd wasn’t that everything was in metric (it was!) and it wasn’t that all the rooms were separated off with closing doors (they were, including living rooms). It was that some of the places I saw had no kitchen! If you have ever put in some serious time in the housing market in Germany, you possibly have come across places with the kitchen missing. If you haven’t come across this yet, consider yourself lucky. That means you probably found a place to live rather quickly and were not subject to loving everything about the house/apartment...except for the fact it had no kitchen. As Americans, we would never run into this strange occurrence in the states, probably because the reason we rent a house is because we

don’t own any part of an apartment. We need a place to live with all the amenities, including a sink! I have asked many of our German hosts why this is a thing. It seems many Deutschers actually like this! One friend brought up a good point when he explained it to me.

“When I moved into a flat, it was the perfect location and the price was right. Unfortunately, the landlord hadn’t updated it in about 30 years and the kitchen was the ugliest pea-green you have ever seen.” He went on to say “one of the best ways to have a nice modern place is to

actually update it yourself!” I asked what you do with the kitchen when you move and the next place is a different size? “No problem. There is actually like a black market for kitchens where you can almost find every size of used kitchen you want to buy or sell.” So what else might “move with the owner” in Germany? It is often likely that the light fixtures move with an owner or renter, but that depends on what the situation is. In extreme cases, it is possible some people take floors with them! In areas around the military installations, a bit more of the American culture has rubbed off on the local population, so it is likely that these types of cases are more rare than they used to be. If you do run into this type of situation though, you may want to see it as a positive. This could be your opportunity to have the kitchen you have always wanted. And then get paid for it when you sell it to someone that needs it when you move!

THE GREATEST BRITAIN ROAD TRIP, PART 4: LAKE DISTRICT, ENGLAND As we slowly make our way north, we arrive back in England. In Lake District, to be exact. Otherwise known as Lakelands or just The Lakes and located in the county of Cumbria in the northwest of England, it’s less than a 3-hour drive from Llandudno in Wales. With a population density of only 18 people per square kilometre and 900 square miles of nature, it’s yet another perfect destination to relax and unplug. Trust the 19 million tourists that travel to the park ever year as well as the countless poets and writers that visited the area for inspiration and plan a trip there during your stay in Europe.

Since hotels, restaurants and other public establishments rely heavily on the profit from the summer months, the entire area is extremely child- and dog-friendly, allowing your furry friends to enter many of the hotels, restaurants, pubs and cafés. Check out this list of 25 things to do in the Lakes with your dog for more ideas at lakedistricitgems. co.uk. Children will love the area’s connection with Peter Rabbit, since his creator, Beatrix Potter, loved the Lakes and aside from vacationing there all her life, lived, drew and wrote there for years. Her cottage, Hill Top Farm, is a museum now and should not be missing on your itinerary.

swimming anyway, we shall treat it as a lake nonetheless since it’s a large body of fresh water and that’s what I think of when I imagine a lake. You can walk around the whole mere in circa 1.5 hours and since it’s a very even path, it’s ideal for children as well. The scenery around the lake is absolutely stunning and very diverse boasting forests, meadows, hills (to look at not to hike), sheep, cows, waterfalls and a mini beach. The walk is equal parts relaxing and simply beautiful and should 100 percent be on your itinerary during your time in the Lakes, if only because, and I cannot stress this enough, Syke Farm Tea Room has the best scones. End the walk with a cup of tea and a hot scone or a bowl of soup at Syke Farm Tea Room right next to the parking spot. Drive back to Keswick via the gorgeous Honister Pass and stop at the Slate Mine Museum for even more highlights in one day. Cat Bells This little mountain had me crying three minutes in but 11-year-olds were overtaking me all the time so it might not have been as hard as I made it. (Yes, I used my dying breath to ask random children for their age because I couldn’t believe how unfit I actually am.) The steep walk that doesn’t stop being steep until you make it to the top ends with a sweet view that may have even been worth this near-death experience. Make sure to wear hiking boots for the ground is uneven at times and there is a mini climb involved.

Windermere Stop by Windermere, the largest lake in the district, on a sunny day and take a boat tour to see the scenery from a new perspective. You can hop on and off at different stops so you can take a few hours to go for a swim or relax in the sun before cruising back to where you parked your car. Wildlife Unfortunately I am not a wildlife expert but if you are or wish to be, the Lakes are, again, the place for you. Red squirrels can be found in comparatively large quantities here and since they are getting rarer by the minute, it’s important to drive carefully and be on the lookout at all times. Other highlights include golden eagles, fish and birds I know nothing about but hear are very special and the incomparable Herdy Sheep, a breed indigenous to the park. The babies are born black and while their wool turns white during their lives, it gets grey again once they grow older, which always makes them look like judgmental old ladies. Hill Top Farm, Beatrix Potter’s Cottage

Scafell Pike The top of the highest mountain in England can be reached by foot though one should not underestimate the climb that leads to the breathtaking view. It’s tough, steep and rocky. The path starts at a car park in Lake Head. Dogs are welcome but should be used to long, uphill walks. Wray Castle

Buttermere

A ‘mere’ is basically a lake that’s too shallow to deserve the term. Since Buttermere isn’t open for

of the original furniture and is packed with changing exhibitions and child-friendly play areas instead. Consider arriving by boat (lake cruises from Windermere stop there), bike or foot as the car park fills up quickly during the summer months.

Beatrix loved the Lake District after having vacationed there every year as a young girl and woman. Many of her books were inspired and written in her 17th century farm house Hill Top Farm, which is open to visitors year-round. A leaflet will guide you through the small village adjacent to it and point out little spots you might recognize from your favorite Potter tale.

This majestical, Victorian and New Gothical castle built in 1840 unfortunately does not contain any

The World of Beatrix Potter Though designed for younger visitors, this exhibition near Windermere is a journey into the enchanted world of Beatrix Potter’s creations. Peter Rabbit, Jemima Puddle, Mrs Tiggy-winkle, Mr. Jeremy Fisher and all their friends invite you

Other famous writers that either stopped by or wrote about the Lakes are John Keats, Lord Tennyson, Thomas Carlyle, Percy Shelley and even Ernest Hemingway. The Pencil Museum Granted, the Pencil Museum in Keswick might not be world-renowned but it is the only one in the world (I think) and especially on a really, really rainy day (and there are lots of those in the actual wettest inhabited place of the United Kingdom), it’s an excellent way to pass the hours until the sun returns. Don’t forget to prepare for wet weather and pack a sufficient supply of raincoats, rain boots and a spare pair of shoes!

lish language. His birth house can be visit in Cockermouth, only 20 minutes from Keswick. While you’re in the beautiful little town of Cockermouth, don’t miss out on the best hot chocolate I had on my entire trip (and believe me when I say there was a lot of hot chocolate involved). You can find it at a place called “The Moon & Sixpence” on main street, which is conveniently titled Main Street in true small town fashion.

Where to Stay: Booking.com is always a safe bet. Airbnb offers fantastic little cottages for surprisingly low prices that will have you waking up to miles and miles of rural happiness. The Youth Hostel Association, YHA, has a series of hostels, dorms and private rooms, all over the Lakes. If you’re traveling with your pet, you might want to check out Canine Cottages for extra dog-friendly accommodations.

Page 27

Where to Eat: Keswick, the unofficial capital of the Lakes, is the best place to eat. Park your car in the Booths (a great supermarket by the way) parking lot and hit the town on foot. I highly recommend Kat’s Kitchen, which is all vegan but their creative and unique recipes will impress meat-eaters all the same. Visit Wild Strawberry for your afternoon scone, soups, sweet and savory crêpes and other culinary delights. I didn’t eat a single bad meal during my three months in the country so I’d say you’re pretty safe to walk into any restaurant and come out happy and full. Author’s profile: Leonie is a poetry-loving literature student with a passion for small towns, road trips, and self-timering photos of her back where she acts like she has no idea a photo is being taken even though she just spent 25 minutes leaning her phone against a patch of grass. When she isn’t hopping from one bargain flight to the next, she is making sure you’re hanging with the locals and staying updated on events in your area.
