All along the Rhine River, towns will be aglow, fireworks will light the sky and bathe the water in fire, flotillas of ships will be illuminated and castles will be alive with dancing colors during the annual Rhine in Flames, which takes place near the cities of Rüdesheim and Bingen Saturday. Rhine in Flames is one of the biggest fireworks events in the middle Rhine valley. River boats will begin to sail off from various locations along the Rhine River at around 4 and 5 p.m. to prepare the large crowds for a romantic fireworks display in the late evening. Towns along the river, including Trechtingshausen, Rüdesheim and Assmannshausen, will create their own unique aluminous fireworks display as people stop to gaze and appreciate the flaming river.

Rhine In Flames

Between 15,000 and 20,000 boat cruise tickets are sold each year — 2,500 of those tickets in Rüdesheim alone — and most tickets sell out

quickly by the beginning of the year. Gaby Shaefer, executive assistant in charge of event management of Rüdesheim tourism, said Rhine in Flames, is incomparable to any other fireworks display. “We are the biggest and most original,” Shaefer said, “therefore, we call it Rhine in Flames — the original.” Shaefer said the best part of the fireworks display — the finale — consists of three big fireworks displays. “The final firework is always the biggest,” she said with a laugh. “Boom! (There’s) a big bang in the end.” All the river boats, big and small, including cabin and hotel ships, some with dinner and music, meet in Rüdesheim and Bingen for the grand finale after their unique voyages up and down the River Rhine. Beginning in Rüdesheim, ships parade together through the Upper Middle Rhine Valley to view castles illuminated in “bengal fire,” a burning effect, and old church ruins and historical monuments surrounded with booming fireworks, making a dinner and music boat ride just that much more romantic. Although the best place to soak in the fireworks is from the boats,

the towns along the river each have exciting festivities going on the entire weekend. Rüdesheim and Bingen both have a great party kick-off beginning at 3 p.m. Friday to prepare guests for the

fireworks on Saturday, then continues through Sunday. “Many people come to the firework event and stay the weekend,” Shaefer said. Festivities take place at the main market square in Rüdesheim with rock bands and wine and food stands. This year, three major wine growers set up their stands near the Niederwald monument, a statue standing 32 meters tall that can be seen from a distance overlooking the sparkling river. This is another preferred spot to camp out for a spectacular view of the fireworks. Getting up to the monument is an invigorating experience all in itself — a chair lift will take people over the rolling hills of local vineyards as they toast with a glass of Champagne that can be purchased with a lift ticket. On top of the hill people can get comfortable around the monument as they patiently prepare for the grand finale. Bingen also has a great party that can’t be missed. There will be food and beverage stands as well as entertainment. For more information on available boat tickets and events, visit www. rhein-in-flammen.com.

ummer can not officially kick off before you bite into your first juicy, sweet and refreshing slice of watermelon. A dry slice has the power to disappoint more than a summer blockbuster with a weak plot, and when they disappear from the produce department, your heart sinks as it recognizes that summer’s “fun” season has ended. On average, you will eat more than 15 pounds of watermelon each year. The United States produces more than 4 billion of the fruit each year. Forty-four states produce them today. Humans have been eating them since 900-1,000 A.D. as they moved from their origination in Africa through Asia and the Middle East. China continues to harvest the most watermelon in the world. You can’t seem to tire of its unique texture and tang, so it’s a good thing your immense appetite mirrors the immense nutrition it provides. Each one is a powerhouse of vitamins: vitamin A (an antioxidant), vitamin C (helps prevent cell damage) and vitamin B6 (increases the conversion of protein to energy). It also has the highest concentrations of lycopene of any fresh fruit or vegetable. Can’t stomach bananas? Get your potassium from watermelons. Potassium is critical for balancing your acidity level and can also be found in spinach and beans. The fruit serves heart health as well, as it is full of amino acids (citrulline and arginine), which can help maintain good blood flow in your arteries. The more ripe a watermelon is, the larger amount of vitamins it will produce. Research has shown that when the flesh changes from white to different shades of red, beta-carotene and lycopene content get higher and higher. You’re hungry now! With so much going for it, you can’t wait to add it back to your daily breakfast routine or your summer fruit salad. Sure, you can just slice up watermelon and enjoy it plain and simple. But why not try out these fun recipes for a new twist on how to enjoy this spectacular summer staple? Your appetite might not be appeased, but it will be pleased.

Independence Day Celebrating

As Chip Middleton looked around the theater in Saarbrücken, waiting for a performance by the Russian Ballet to begin, she felt something was missing. “The thing that struck me was that there was not an American flag in the theater,” Chip recalled. “The German flag was on one side of the stage and the Russian flag on the other. No ‘Star Spangled Banner’ played — nothing American.” At any sporting event or performance in the United States, she would have expected to see an American flag prominently displayed. For the first time during her travels, she thought deeply about what the American flag stood for: freedom. “I didn’t feel the absence of freedom, but not having the American flag displayed was unusual to me,” Chip said. “It did make me proud of our country and our flag, however.” While living in a country where days such as the Fourth of July or Memorial Day are just another weekday to other residents, Chip and her family also gained a new appreciation for patriotic holidays and how they are celebrated in the U.S. The Middleton family, Bill, Chip and their then 4-year-old daughter Stephanie, arrived in Germany on Jan. 3, 1978. Bill Middleton was hired as an interior designer and was later promoted to chief interior designer for the non-appropriated funds facilities at Morale, Welfare and Recreation. “I had a staff of five designers to cover the 30 plus bases we had across Europe,” Bill said. “That office still exists, but I think they’re down to two people right now.” Bill recalled the close-knit community of the stairwell dwellers on Ramstein Air Base — many of whom he views as his “adopted family.” “While there were lots of civilians living on base at that time, we were blessed to have military families in our stairwells in both the buildings we lived in,” Bill said. “It gave us a sense of family with those dear folks and allowed us to be there with

them in the good times and the bad. It truly made our freedom special.” The stairwell residents enjoyed American style cookouts on holidays and weekends when they didn’t travel, he recalled. “We would nearly always get together with everyone and have a cookout and then go watch the fireworks show on base in the evening,” Chip added. While living overseas, the Middletons took advantage of unique ways to celebrate patriotic holidays, as well. “One of the greatest things we were able to do while there was visiting the battlefields and burial grounds where so many of our brave American Soldiers had given their lives,” Bill said. “It really made us appreciate our freedom and the sacrifices the military makes for our freedom.” Chip said reflecting on the sacrifices made for freedom of religion and government gave her a new perspective on what it means to be an American and the “American dream” craved by people from all walks of life. Sydney Bittner has been living in Germany for a year and a half. She celebrated Independence Day in Germany for the first time last year. Bittner said Independence Day is her second favorite holiday — second only to Christmas. “My family used to have a party every year,” Bittner recalled. “We lived in a town a block from the carnival, and we would always watch the fireworks from my back yard.” Last year, Bittner and her husband watched the fireworks on base, but they didn’t have any other festivities. “Living here is different; people have private parties or go on base,” she said. “You definitely have to stay in this area to get the sense of a holiday. I liked celebrating this holiday a lot more stateside.” Although Independence Day is very special to her, Bittner said she hasn’t made many particular celebration plans this year. “I assume I’ll watch the fireworks,” Bittner said. “Maybe FaceTime my hubby so he can see them too.”

abroad

Bittner has prepared an Independence Day themed box to send to her husband, Spc. Hayden Bittner, who will be deployed through the holiday. While the Bittners and others will continue to make the most of Independence Day abroad, for the Middleton family, those are sweet but distant memories. The Middleton family moved to San Antonio, Texas, Aug. 20, 1993 after more than 15 years living abroad. In addition to keeping up with the celebration of traditional patriotic holidays while overseas, the Middletons enjoyed incorporating aspects of German celebrations into their own holidays — even after they returned to the states. “We enjoyed the German Christmas holiday the most,” Chip said. “Some of their traditions we have adopted for our own family and many we miss terribly.” Chip contrasted the fragrant smells of the spices that floated through the German Christmas markets in the winter with the more commercialized version she sees living in the U.S. “When stores start putting out Christmas displays in July, Christmas is somewhat tarnished by December, and you feel that the true meaning is getting lost amongst everything else,” she said. Watching fireworks shows, signifying the “bombs bursting in air” during the U.S. fight for independence, will remain one of Bill’s favorite traditions — along with crowding as many small American flags as he can through the flowerbeds in front of his home in San Antonio. Living in a civilian neighborhood, Chip misses being surrounded by men and women in base housing who, with their families, make sacrifices every day to preserve freedom. She said she was filled with patriotic pride when she would hear the national anthem blared on loud speakers at the end of the workday. “It never bothered me to have to stop my car or stand outside while it was being played,” Chip said. “I always felt a sense of pride when I heard it — and still do.”

The Great

Story and photos by Dr. Krystal White, Contributing writer

Contrary to assumptions that the longer days of summer inspire people to be more active, many people still struggle to find the time to exercise during the summer. We know we should move more, but oftentimes hot weather, traveling and summer breaks decrease our motivation to be active. In the past 20 years, the frequency of time children spend outdoors during the summer has steadily declined. No longer is it common for children to spend free time wandering their neighborhoods, lounging in their backyards or exploring the great outdoors. Unrecognized parenting habits may reduce a child’s exposure to outdoor activities. Everyone knows the gender stereotypes: boys like to play sports; girls like to play house. These beliefs are so entrenched that sometimes parents naturally shift their play focus. Research has shown that preschool girls are 16 percent less likely than boys their age to be taken outside by their parents to play. Nearly half of preschoolers don’t venture outside with their parents to play every day, and girls are most likely to suffer. These facts were found in a new study of 8,950 American children in their final year before entering grade school. Minority children and children under 5 who stay at home are most at risk. Although preschoolers should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day, 42 percent of those who don’t regularly attend child care don’t go outside daily. That lack of exposure can lead to a health disadvantage. We know we all need to get some exercise, but research indicates that being in nature may give us unique health advantages. Being outdoors is really great for motor development, while contact with nature is beneficial for cognitive development. For young children, exercise and play is interrelated. So when children spend time outdoors, they are more likely to be using their body in a way that shapes the development of multiple skills. According to one study, moms were

more likely than dads to take their kids outside, and gym-rat mothers even more so. Mothers who worked out more than four times per week were 50 percent more likely to take their child outside at least once a day than mothers who didn’t exercise. Adults need “green time” as well. The constant stimuli of city life can be mentally exhausting, and life in the city can actually dull our thinking. A few minutes in a crowded city setting can cause the brain to suffer memory loss and reduced self-control. Even brief glimpses of natural elements improve brain perfor-

mance by providing a cognitive break from the complex demands of urban life. Researchers at the University of Glasgow found activities in natural environments, such as forests and parks, have an especially positive effect on stress, fatigue and mood. Some research shows that outdoor activity is more healthy than indoor exercise, specifically for mental health benefits. The experience of nature helps to restore the mind from the mental fatigue of work or studies, contributing to improved work performance and satisfaction. Are you ready for adventure? The bold, the beautiful and the bacon

A weekender’s guide to Bamberg by Dr. Krystal White Contributing writer A three hour drive from the KMC brings travelers to one of the most quaint german towns in the country. Old timbered houses, colorful facades, friendly water canals, and some of the most delicious beer you’ll drink await you. Located in Bavaria, Bamberg is one of the few cities in Germany that was not destroyed by World War II bombings. A nearby German artillery factory prevented planes from getting near Bamberg, and therefore many spectacular buildings were spared from ruin. The architecture is simply gorgeous and pleasant. baroque-era buildings nestled along the water offer superb photography shots or a simple summer stroll. More than 3,000 buildings comprise this very pleasing town, now a UNESCO world heritage site. A sunny Saturday morning offers weekenders a quaint farmers market. Don’t worry if you find yourself there during the week as the market is held six days a week. At this market you will find some of the best tasting honey in the area, as well as farm fresh eggs, produce and cheese. Bamberg is also home to eight breweries: Brauerei Fässla, Brauerei Greifenklau, Brauerei Heller-Trum (Schlenkerla), Brauerei Kaiserdom, Brauerei Keesmann, Klosterbräu, Mahrs-Bräu and Brauerei Spezial. It is also home to one brewpub, Ambräusianum. In a city with a population of 70,000, the residents are ensured to have easy and entertaining access to quality beer and a jovial atmosphere. Hundreds of years ago, many beers were prepared in the same environment where meat was smoked, giving it a very particular flavor. The grain, usually something like barley, was smoked over fires to dry until the 1700s. The procedures were lost with the Industrial Age, but now, the German town of Bamberg fans the flame of tradition by producing a beer worthy of worship with its own special “rauchmalz” (beechwood smoked malt).

Bamberg, Germany, is known for its beautiful medieval- and baroque-era architecture, including its town hall located on a bridge over the River Regnitz.

If you ask a handful of locals or read a few beer enthusiasts’ blogs, they will say Aecht Schlenkerla is the best smoked beer in the world. This tried and true method of researching has yet to fail, and from the moment a visitor enters Schlenkerla, he or she will feel a bit like they’ve stumbled upon local gold. The tavern occupies a building first mentioned in 1405, and its low timbered ceilings and dark wood reflect the high sun of a summer’s day with welcoming ease. The dark, chestnut beer tastes a bit like maple and the subtle woodiness of smoked meat. The weiss (light) smoked beer tastes assertive and tangy. With a hint of tobacco, this beer is

easy to settle down with after a trying day. The word “Schlenkerla” means to “shake, like when drinking,” or literally, I learned later, “to dangle.” And the beer lives up to its name. If most Franconians are considered reserved, then Schlenkerla shakes their inhibitions loose a bit. This beer smokes the competition. Grab your best bud and head to Bamberg soon! The first firework weekend takes place in Bremm on July 11, and the second display will be held Aug. 8 with an open-air baroque-style performance that is timed perfectly with the fireworks. The Mosel Music Festival brings Germany’s historical cities to life, one of those being Trier or “the Roma of the north,” Germany’s oldest city. Trier’s Porta Nigra and Basilica of Constantine, historical buildings that date back more than 2,000 years, will serve as a backdrop to the musical entertainment, making the event more unique. “Having a concert in such an old place creates an atmosphere you can’t buy,” Latsch

Cruising along the Burgundy canals by Sandy Paige Contributing writer Seven brilliant sunrises, seven breath-taking sunsets, 80 locks, 26 lock-keepers, 158 kilometers, 35 French villages, seven Americans and countless memories. This was our boating holiday on the “canal de Bourgogne,” or Burgundy Canal, in central eastern France. We started in the village of Venere, meandered to Tanlay and returned one week later to Venere on summer solstice. We sailed into tunnels of trees with backdrops of green meadows and past vineyards and Charolais cows. Singing birds awakened us each morning, and croaking bullfrogs serenaded us each evening. The moon was our night light. Mooring posts were available near every village, and when we chose to stop in the countryside, ropes and metal stakes secured our boat. Three people served as our crew (one at the wheel and two on shore to secure ropes fore and aft), but often other docked boaters sprung to the task. Three of our group were French speakers — a definite plus in the small villages on this route. The trip’s highlights included the beauty and tranquility of Burgundy (straight out of an 18th century French painting); the friendliness of the French all along the way; the interaction with other boaters — French, German, Dutch and English; the fresh bread, croissants and pastries from village “boulangeries,” or bakeries; the “Galettes,” which are French pastries; the Burgundy wine; the lock houses (every one was photo-worthy); the 12th century church at Chassignelles with its roof of four layers of stacked shale and remarkable murals; and the well-preserved, furnished Abbey of Fontenay, a 12th century chalet that was Photo by Cheri de Haas occupied, but unharmed, A boat waits in one of the many locks of by German soldiers during the Burgundy canal in France in July. World War II. The Burgundy canal system was started in the late 1700s and completed in 1832. The locks still retain their old world character and charm. Lock gates are opened and closed with hand cranks, so water trapped inside quickly rises or drops to the needed level. In this part of Burgundy, locks are managed by lock-keepers, available from 9 a.m. until noon and 1 to 7 p.m. Most lock-keepers manage two or three locks and shuttle back and forth by bicycle, moped or car. These locks offer great photo opportunities of delightful, helter-skelter gardens and flower boxes brimming with colors and blossoms. At Lock No. 82, there was a hand-crafted wooden rack of homemade marmalades, coffee and pastries to go. Lock No. 87 offered bottles of Burgundy wine and glasses of sangria and delightful garden art created by a lock-keeper with a lively, whimsical imagination. Friendly dogs and curious cats greeted us at most stops, and families of ducks often paddled alongside. We booked our cruise through Nicols (www.boatrenting-nicols.co.uk); other companies offer similar packages. Our boat had four bedrooms, each with a private bathroom (marine toilets and hand-held showers), a small but efficient kitchen equipped with dishes and cooking utensils, and a lounging deck on each end — adequate and comfortable for seven. Total cost was €3,100 plus an additional €300 for fuel. Earlybooking discounts are available. Bicycle rentals are available at the embarkation point.

Your German teacher may have taught you how to say hello, “Guten Tag,” but have you ever been answered with a friendly greeting of “Grüß Gott,” “Moin” or “Guude”? Don’t worry if you didn’t understand. You have been introduced to the German dialect, and some Germans may not understand, either. Just as the different U.S. states have varying slang words and dialects, so do the different regions in Germany. For example, a fisherman from the Frisian Islands up north will find it hard to talk to a winemaker from the Kaiserslautern area or a skiing teacher from the Alps. Everybody has their own dialect. And this problem was even noticed by church reformer Martin Luther when he complained in 1538: “There are just too many dialects in the German language, that one might not understand each other properly.” The reason dates back to early Germanic tribes who each had individual languages. Through the centuries, the scattered regionalism and small territories didn’t help much to unify the language. It was Luther and his Bible translation, as well as the invention of the printing press by Johannes Gutenberg, that set a standard for what was eventually to become “Hochdeutsch,” the dialect-free standard version of German you learn in school. Today, Germany has 16 major groups of dialects, but there are countless regional, even local, variations to each dialect. Other than in Great Britain, where speaking the regional tongue is a political dead-end, German politicians found it to be very helpful for their career to prove their belonging to a special region by means of dialect. You will encounter a stronger type of dialect in the rural areas than in metropolitan regions, and it is not uncommon for villagers to pride themselves on their very own language variation. So, as an example, if you are hungry and want to buy a plain bread roll: In the German capital of Berlin, you order “Schrippen,” whereas the Swabian bakery sells “Weckle,”

its Franconian colleague offers “Breedla,” and the people in the south Baden talk about “Weggli.” They are called “Rundstücke” in the northern metropolis Hamburg, but “Semmeln” is your word in Bavaria. You need to ask for “Luffe” in the Braunschweig area, and that’s not yet counting Austrian and Swiss dialects. But, if your German isn’t advanced enough and you are having trouble trying to cope with Ruhrdeutsch, Hamburgerisch, Kölsch, Hessisch, Sächsisch, Berlinerisch, Pfälzisch, Badisch, Plattdeutsch, Bayerisch, Schwäbisch or Fränkisch dialects, just stick with what you know — Hochdeutsch — and say, “Ein Brötchen, bitte!” And if the German language and all its dialects don’t confuse you enough, here’s the bonus round! In contrast to other German dialects, “Bayerisch” differs so much from standard German that even native German speakers have difficulties speaking and undererstanding it. So, the next time you are at Oktoberfest or sitting at a restuarant in Munich, listen for some of these phrases, or maybe try to use some on your own! Hello! Could you tell me where to find a nice restaurant around here? Griaß Eahna Gohd. Kenna Sie uns sogn, wo ma bei Eahna a guade Wirtschaft findt? I would like to order a large glass of beer, please! I mog a hoibe, bitschee! Would you please bring me a menu? Taatn S uns bitte d Speiskartn bringa? Do you have roast pork with bread dumplings? Hom’s a Schweinsbrohn mit Semmekneedl? We would like to pay. Mir mechatn gern zoin. Thank you very much and have a nice day! Dank schee und an scheena Tohg wünsch I!

Just because the trend is common, does not mean it is normal. It is too easy for teenagers to slip into screen coma during the summer months. Happy and active youths turn into zombie like creatures with little urges to do anything that involves leaving the house. Brain studies confirm that once engaged, the brain subconsciously finds it difficult to disengage from such a pleasing experience. Sometimes adults suffer screen addiction as well, although men appear to be at greater risk. Stanford researchers studied the brain activity of men and women while playing video games. The region of the brain associated with reward and addiction was more active in men than in women.

ost of us have binged here and there — staying up late to catch episodes of “Game of Thrones,” scouring travel sites to inform our decisions about where to stay or eat within our budget, reaching for our phones when our bodies sense that we will have a minute or more of unoccupied mind time. A 2014 Pew Internet Project collected almost 2,000 experts who estimated that screen based technology will become as seamlessly a part of our daily rituals as electricity by 2025. Our health, education and entertainment systems will become personalized, while our personal security, depth of relationships and ethics may be compromised. Our use is increasing. In 2008, the typical teen and adult logged more than seven hours a day and more than 50 hours a week in front of a TV, computer or cell phone screen, according to research from the Kaiser Family Foundation. In 2013, Nielsen estimated we spend almost 11 hours a day with a gadget of some kind. Compare that with how many “un gadget” hours we spend with each other, and it’s easy to see where relationship problems may be rising as well.

Ten life-changers invented by Germans

by Nicole Karsch-Meibom, Contributing writer Everyone knows the Germans were responsible for the creation of the Mercedes and the Porsche. But there is a bigger list of common, everyday items that many don’t realize the Germans invented — and they are things many of us could not live without!

ADIDAS

In the early 1920s, two brothers, Rudolf and Adolf Dassler, from Nuremberg started producing the now legendary sportswear shoes with the famous white stripes — Adidas. These shoes became an immediate success, and athletes at the Olympic games in 1928 wore them for the first time. Later, after the brothers had a falling out, Rudolf introduced the Puma shoes.

ASPIRIN

Headache, fever, inflammation? There’s a quick remedy most of us take every day. Aspirin, the medical remedy for many ailments, was developed in 1897 by the German company Bayer. The proper name is acetylsalicylic acid, which was first synthesized by Felix Hofmann, who worked for Bayer. Fortunately, they came up with a shorter name, too!

CHIP CARDS

Do you know what chip cards are? We use them every day, even if we don’t realize it, and there’s hardly an area of our lives that doesn’t revolve around them. They are found in phone cards, ATM and credit cards, and ID and patient cards. The smart data carrier was developed by Jürgen Dethloff and Helmut Göttrup in 1969. In 1977, Dethloff applied for a patent for the microprocessor card, the so-called smart card, that can be freely programmed, thus providing high functionality.

COMPUTER

Though companies like Apple are now at the forefront of technology and the poster children for computers, it was actually a Berlin engineer, Konrad Zuse, who has often been regarded as the inventor of the modern computer. Zuse built an electromechanical binary calculator, which later became the world’s first programmable computer in 1941.

CONTACT LENSES

Contact lenses were invented in 1887 by a German doctor and eye specialist, Adolf Gaston Eugen Fick. Unlike the modern version, his lenses were made from heavy, brown glass

Courtesy photos

and could only be worn a few hours a day. He first tested the lenses on rabbits, then on himself and finally, some volunteers participated in the experiment. There is no record about how much these lenses hurt, but his invention became a success.

HARIBO GUMMY BEARS

If not yours, at least the lives of your children would be different if Hans Riegel had not invented those sweet, colorful bears. Fortunately, Hans Riegel of Bonn (HARIBO) enriched the world with gummy bears in 1922. Now, these sweet treats come in six colors and varying flavors. Every attempt to introduce a new version has so far failed.

MP3 FORMAT

And did you know Germans were responsible for inventing the MP3 format? In 1987 researchers at the German Fraunhofer Institute succeeded in compressing audio files to this new format for the first time by eliminating all the frequencies inaudible to the human ear. Today, modern devices make it possible to have all of your music with you all the time! See INVENTION, Page 25

Homeschooling

on the move Military children often have to switch schools multiple times in a year during a PCS. While many families choose to homeschool because of the quality of the school district their children are in, bullying or for religious reasons, some military families have opted to homeschool for practical purposes. After her children had to change school districts three times in one year because of an international move, military spouse Nicole Fisher began to consider homeschooling. Fisher said she appreciates the public schools her children have attended. “I have no problems or issues with the current public school my children attend, and I do not consider their current school among the reasons I am choosing homeschooling,” Fisher said. “The teachers do their best to tailor to each child’s learning style, and I understand it can be difficult with numerous kids in each class.” Fisher said she is considering homeschooling to give her children a more stable learning environment when their family relocates and to give oneon-one attention in areas where they struggle. “My 10-year-old is having some difficulties in school and needs the extra attention and the flexibility to take the extra time in certain subjects or move ahead if need be,” Fisher said. An added benefit to homeschooling is taking advantage of the learning opportunities afforded by living in Europe and traveling regularly, she said. However, with school-age children starting second and sixth grade in the fall, Fisher will miss the anticipation and preparation for the first day of school, hearing about her children’s classrooms, teachers and classmates, and participating in school functions and activities throughout the year.

But Fisher is not concerned about her children keeping up social interactions with peers their own ages. “Because my children are involved in outside sports and activities and have several neighborhood friends, I do not have any concerns with my children’s ability to socialize with peers,” Fisher said. “I have found several homeschool support groups that have weekly meet-ups, field trips and play groups, so socializing will not be an issue.” One of Fisher’s main concerns is whether she is equipped to help her children stay on track and excel in their education. She said she realizes the road will not be easy. Besides teaching two children, Fisher will be continuing to care for her 1-year-old and giving birth to her fourth child — all while studying as a full time college student. “I do have some concerns about being able to keep up,” she said. “But as with any new venture, I am sure it will take some time, flexibility and adjustments as time goes on. To say I am not nervous about the homeschooling process would be a lie.” Fisher has found resources that help new homeschooling families through Internet research and local support groups. A KMC area teacher with eight years experience teaching in elementary schools in the United States and overseas shared some of her insights. In addition to the resources made available through the experiences of others and modern technology, she suggests parents consult with licensed teachers who have been professionally trained in education — especially if faced with educating students with learning disabilities or special needs. “I am a public educator who believes in what she does,” she said. “I believe every child can and will

learn; it is a matter of finding the best instructional fit.” Parents who are considering homeschooling should understand the amount of knowledge, preparation and energy it will require, as well as the dedication they must put in, she said. “Because there are so many variables that go into learning, the most important question parents need to answer is what is best for their child,” she said. “And realize what is best for one of your children may not be best for all of them.” She also shared some keys to a solid educational environment, whether at home or through the public school system. A good teacher will recognize that each child is unique and provide for their individual needs, teaching the whole child — academically, socially and emotionally, she said. Meeting a child where they are and taking them to the next level while instilling in them a love for learning is the key to a good education. It will also aid in the transition to or from the public school for parents to meet with the classroom teachers outside normal school hours regarding what skills and strategies have already been covered and the expectations the school system has for a particular age group, she said. “Find out the child’s current level in all academic areas,” she said. “It is best for children, for teachers and parents to be on the same page, and communication is the way to get there.” When considering homeschooling, parents should consider the overall scope and sequence of their educational plan, asking themselves, “What is See homeschool, Page 23

The truth about body image by Dr. Krystal White Contributing writer

W

e all want our next generation to be healthy. We know we should model healthy eating habits and physical activity for our children, but knowing how to model a healthy body image as a parent and as a community is extremely challenging. Should we want to change our bodies? Or feel good about what we have? With so many mixed messages, developing a healthy body image feels almost impossible. More than 97 percent of surveyed women admitted on a Glamour magazine survey to having at least one “I hate my body” moment each day. Their research found that, on average, women have 13 negative body thoughts daily — nearly one for every waking hour. And a disturbing number of women confessed to having 35, 50 or even 100 hateful thoughts about their own shapes each day. The National Mental Health Information Center found that girls are still three times more likely than boys to have a negative body image. But body image concerns for boys and men are increasing. If they are honest and open, many boys admit to being worried about how they look. The Journal of Pediatrics reported in 2013 that 90 percent of boys in middle and high school exercise occasionally with the specific goal of gaining muscle mass. These messages that our bodies aren’t “good

enough” come from the media we consume. When we watch certain shows or play certain games, we are exposed time and time again to “models” of good/bad bodies or good/bad houses or good/bad relationships. This exposure changes what we think is normal and can distort our ability to see our own strengths. People who are “thin” or “average” or “healthy weights” are just as likely to insult themselves as overweight people. We hear so much about the obesity epidemic that our minds are on constant alert for any sign of deficiency. Body image pressure is all around us. Some days, our defenses against it are stronger than others. On bad days, more unhealthy body image thoughts may be a symptom that “something else is going on.” We take our stress and worries about our lives out on how we “feel” about our bodies. Whether you’re unhappy in general is a much larger factor in how you feel about your body than what your body actually looks like. We need to start looking at what our bodies do for us rather than on how they let us down. Most teens watch an average of 22 hours of TV a week and then spend a lot of time looking at fat-free or toned bodies in the pages of health, fashion and teen magazines. This “standard” is impossible to achieve. Take a look at the 10 most popular magazines on the

NEGATIVE BODY IMAGE HABITS DEVELOP EARLY AND THEN GET WORSE AS WE AGE  Toddlers begin to think that being “overweight” equals being “bad”  Children as young as 5 or 6 start to state that their ideal size is smaller than their real size  Children as young as 5 or 6 start to think “small” equals “good” (nice/friendly)  Even preschool-age boys can feel like they don’t have “enough muscles”  One third of girls in the fourth to sixth grades mention “how I look” as one of their top three concerns/things they think about  About 63 percent of girls would rather be a men‘s magazine model than a doctor, teacher or nurse  In the last 10 years, hospitalizations for eating disorders in children under 12 have doubled.  Six out of 10 teenagers think they’d be happy if they were thinner, and 67 percent think they need to lose weight.  A shocking 90 percent of all women want to change something about their appearance.

THERMOS

When asked to develop an insulating container for liquid air, glass blower Reinhold Burger came up with a brilliant idea in 1903, and this idea can still be found in most households today — the thermos flask. His slogan was, “Keeps it cold, keeps it hot — without fire and without ice.” While the initial idea of insulation came from the German chemist Adolf Ferdinand Weinhold in 1881, Burger discovered the practical aspect by using glass.

TOOTHPASTE

The world would be full of people with bad breath and rotting teeth if it weren’t for two German scientists. After studying tooth hygiene,

pharmacist Adolf Heinrich Bergmann invented a type of tooth soap in 1852, and Ottmar von Mayenburg developed the first toothpaste “Chlorodont” with peppermint flavor in 1907. The name comes from the Greek word “Chloros,” which means light green as well as fresh, and “Odon” for tooth.

COFFEE FILTER

And, finally, one we can all be thankful for! Housewife Melitta Bentz from Dresden loved coffee but was tired of over-brewed coffee and coffee grounds in the mug. So she came up with the idea of using blotting paper and a perforated brass pot, creating the first coffee filter. In 1908, she got the patent for her coffee filter, and a year later she had already sold more than 1,000 filters.

Page 25 BODY IMAGE, from Page 23 newspaper racks. The women and men on the covers represent about .03 percent of the population. The other 99.97 percent don’t have a chance to compete, much less measure up. Most ads are reproduced, airbrushed or changed by a computer. As a community, and as parents, we need to educate our children on body tolerance; health comes in all sizes. Think of three people who you admire. Do they look like fashion models? How does their appearance affect how you feel about them? It is also important to remember that society’s standards have changed significantly over the last 50 years. The women who were considered the “ideal beauties” in the 1940s and 1950s (like Marilyn Monroe, size 14) were full-bodied and truly beautiful women, but they would be considered “overweight” by today’s standards. As we enjoy the full freedom of summer, this is the perfect time for families to adopt a healthy attitude about body image. Adults can question their own mixed body thoughts. If adults are constantly dieting or talking about their “bad bodies,” how are children going to develop body confidence? Families are encouraged to eliminate talks about “diets” and beginning to question the status quo of what it means to be “beautiful.” If we hear kids say, “I look/ feel fat,” or, “I shouldn’t eat this cookie,” or, “My (insert body part here) looks fat,” the best response is one of understanding. All of us have moments where we don’t feel good about how we look. We can allow children to talk this way and also say, “Hey, there are times I feel that way too.” Understanding first, we then can move toward skills. Give children ideas to feel better about their bodies. Name three things your body did for you today, take a walk, wear something comfortable, eat something healthy or study about healthy lifestyle choices. The best skill to have is building relationships based on secure attachments that value character over size.

But when Jenko meets a kindred spirit on the football team and Schmidt infiltrates the bohemian art major scene, they begin to

If these two overgrown adolescents can grow from freshmen into real men, college might be the best thing that ever happened to them. Starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum.
