13 nations jump-start International Jump Week by Airman 1st Class D. Blake Browning 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs U.S. service members along with military personnel from 13 partner nations traveled to Bitburg, Germany, between July 10 and 14 to participate in International Jump Week. “The intended goal is to get partner nations on the same page in terms of air dropping parachutists,” said Capt. Christopher Deans, 37th Airlift Squadron Mission commander for International Jump Week. The differences in techniques, parachutes, and other ways of dropping paratroopers initiate this training year after year. “We have a standardized practice now working with the 435th Contingency Response Group,” said Deans. “If we ever have to go into a joint operation we’ll all be on the same page.” During the weeklong mission service members battled adverse weather conditions while dropping approximately 500 paratroopers. “We were able to use every single parachute that we have,” said Deans. “We were also able to deal with a little bit of weather this week, and a couple days we had to weather-cancel, so a majority of the work was done in one day.”

Parachutists load onto a C-130J Super Hercules assigned to the 37th Airlift Squadron for takeoff during International Jump Week July 11 in Bitburg, Germany. Inside Spangdahlem Air Base’s airspace, the Bitburg drop zone required complex coordination between the 435th Contingency Response Group and Airmen assigned to the 37 AS.

Deans said three lifts were completed in Bitburg to make sure all of the jumpers were able to accomplish their mission. Additionally, 37 AS Airmen per-

formed formation flying pilot training in transit to Bitburg. “Exercises like this allow us to network and build relations with our allies,” said Tech. Sgt. Luke Hightower,

Mark Tilsher, the Ramstein ALS School commandant. “His adherence to the core values and dedication to the wingman culture is without equal. Tech. Sgt. Wilson never misses an opportunity to educate, motivate or inspire. He loves to help others succeed, and is driven by helping others reach their own goals, all while being an absolute master of his craft. Wilson is credited with building the Air Force’s first iTunes U pilot program saving the Air Force approximately $21K a year, leading USAFE’s largest ALS for 2.5 months during a manning shortage, among numerous other accomplishments.

“He has been critical to the success of the Ramstein ALS mission and helped navigate the school through a prolonged mission surge and manning crunch,” Tilsher said. “Wilson is the wingman, leader and warrior you want on your team, and the Air Force is better for having him.” The 12 Outstanding Airmen of the Year for 2017 (listed alphabetically by major command): 1. 86 CCATT and AE sharpen cohesiveness

Airmen assigned to the 86th Medical Squadron’s Critical Care Air Transportation Team and 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron transport mannequin patients from a bus to a C-130J Super Hercules during a training exercise on the flightline July 12 on Ramstein. Despite the inclement weather, the Airmen pressed forward with the training as they would with real-world scenarios.

Story and photos by Senior Airman Devin Boyer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 86th Medical Squadron’s Critical Care Air Transportation Team and the 86th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron team conducted a training exercise on Ramstein’s flightline July 12. The training improved working relationships between medical entities while increasing the clinical and readiness skills of the Airmen performing in the exercise. “When you get into a situation with a patient, you don’t know what to expect so you always have to expect the unexpected,” said Capt. Brandi Leahy, 86 MDS CCATT nurse. “Anything can go wrong, so you have to be prepared for that.” During the simulation, CCATT and AE worked together to transport the patients who were in critical condition from the scene to the aircraft, and from the air-

craft to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center. “On the occasions that we do fly with CCATT, which isn’t that frequent, we need to make sure that we can still coordinate together,” said Staff Sgt. Yadira Wood, 86 AES technician. Although both CCATT and AE deal with patients, their responsibilities differ. CCATT provides critical care to the patients in the air and in transit while AE has more extensive training with the aircraft and water survival. Both are important assets when dealing with scenarios like the one in the training exercise. “The cohesiveness between CCATT and AE is critical,” said Leahy. “We need them and they need us in these situations. So being able to communicate with them and have good training exercises with them makes it better when you actually fly a real mission. You know what people’s strengths and weaknesses are and you know what to expect from them.”

Between inclement weather and working in tight spaces, the Airmen faced many challenges as they tended to their patients. “Usually you don’t have this many people, but because we’re trying to maximize our capabilities we wanted to have as many people as we can out here,” said Wood. From the challenges faced, the Airmen came out of the training with ideas to improve their effectiveness. “I think we definitely need to maximize the aircraft space,” said Wood. “Ideally we would want to use the entire plane so the patients aren’t side by side.” Overall, the training left the Airmen with more experience than they arrived with. “Today we learned that you can never learn enough and you can never be prepared enough,” said Leahy. “These training simulations are important. If we don’t keep doing them, then things will slip and the deficits will get bigger and bigger.”

German apprentices keep Ramstein rolling Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs German students who finish school with a diploma have an opportunity to learn trade skills and earn money on Ramstein Air Base. Every year, the 86th Airlift Wing Civilian Personnel Office invites German high school-age youth to apply for and participate in a threeand-a-half to four-year apprenticeship training program on Ramstein. Applicants who are accepted are embedded with a participating unit. One of the units which conducts the apprenticeship program is the 435th Construction and Training Squadron. Dieter Flachsland, 435 CTS director of operations, said the program makes a statement that the Air Force is eager to benefit the local area. “It creates ties between the surrounding community and the military organization,” Flachsland said. “This shows families outside that there are job opportunities for local nationals. The U.S. military is one of the biggest employers in this area. This program even tells younger folks that there is an opportunity to work here.” Flachsland added that besides providing employment for locals, his squadron’s three-year-long apprenticeship program also helps ensure there is a continuation of skilled workers in the area. Applicants hoping to work on Ramstein find themselves competing with their peers. For every job opening, there are two or three applicants, Flachsland said. Felix Mayer, 435 CTS administrative service clerk apprentice, said he was grateful for being able to land a job with the squadron. “I put a lot of effort into this whole process,” he said. “As soon as I heard that there were so many other guys that wanted this job, I was like, ‘I’m super lucky.’” Mayer recounted the day he found out he was hired. When he read the acceptance letter, he could hardly believe he really got the job, he said. “It felt unreal,” Mayer recalled. “As soon as I saw the Air Force symbol I was like, ‘Is this happening?’ It took me two days to realize that this is happening — that I would be working for the U.S. Air Force. It’s an honor for me to serve the U.S. Air Force,” he continued. “Since I was 10 years old, I always wanted to be a part of it. A lot of my friends are American, so I was

“Our folks learned in time that they have something to bring as well: motivation, curiosity, and eagerness to learn new things,” he said. “We learned that it is beneficial to us as well to mix things up a little

bit more by having some younger folks on board.” Those interested in Ramstein’s apprenticeship program should contact the 86 AW Civilian Personnel Office at 480-2167 or 06371-47-2167.

Realistic active-shooter training preps Airmen Story and photos by Staff Sgt. Nesha Humes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs A roar of gun shots echoes throughout the crisp hallways and the smell of gunpowder hangs in the air as a masked shooter fires blank ammunition on the hunt for victims. The 86th Maintenance Group readiness and training cell surprised 86 MXG Airmen with a realistic active shooter exercise July 12 on Ramstein. The readiness training aimed to highlight Airmen’s initial cognitive response by appealing to their senses. “We want to emphasize critical thought process during an emergency,” said Tech. Sgt. David Sanner, 86 MXG readiness and compliance cell noncommissioned officer in charge. “We want them to use their brains and act accordingly. Hopefully, that would increase the lives saved in that type of scenario.” Sanner said some critical thought process questions the Airmen should be asking themselves are: Can I escape? Should I evacuate? Do I hear gunfire? Do I smell smoke? Although the readiness training took most Airmen by surprise, overall they reacted positively by quickly notifying the base defense operation center while barricading themselves into locked rooms for protection. In addition to practicing contingency response reactions, safety is a priority during readiness trainings and coordination is key to plan exercises. Multiple organizations such as command post and security forces were notified prior to the exercise to practice emergency procedures. “We’re keeping ourselves in check by evaluating ourselves and doing those type of events,” said Sanner. “We can identify areas we need to improve… That’s a healthy habit for an organization.” Approximately 15 key players worked directly with the 86 MXG readiness and training cell to facilitate the exercise. “We’re the largest American military community outside of the U.S.,” Sanner said. “We need to be prepared to react to readiness scenarios whether it’s active shooters, aircraft damage, shelter in place, fire drills.” The 86 MXG readiness and compliance cells have enabled about 20 trainings since January 2016.

Cycle of service: Volunteers serve service members by Airman 1st Class D. Blake Browning 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The American Red Cross aids many branches of the Armed Forces, their service members, and even their family. Without the dedicated service of the volunteers who run the Red Cross, many would go without information and basic necessities during times of trial. “The American Red Cross is run by 90 percent volunteers,” said Camey Ramirez, Ramstein Red Cross volunteer and public relations communication lead. “And when I say that, I don’t mean just here in the Kaiserslautern Military Community, I mean nationally. Luckily, we have volunteers who show up, work, are enthusiastic, want the organization to be great, and want their community to be great.” Serving as one of the pillars that keeps the military flourishing, the Red Cross is there to ensure service members are fit to fight both on and off the battlefield.

“We may not be the ones who are holding the weapons with the jackets,” said Ramirez. “But we’re the ones there to give you a bottle of water and a hug when you get back.” For more than 100 years the Red Cross’ primary mission and biggest impact has been their ability to deliver emergency communication. In addition, the Red Cross holds many events that assist service members and their families. Everything from basic life support classes to babysitting courses that teach young adults how to watch children. They are able to provide disaster relief and partner with other nonprofit organizations like the Armed Services Blood Program to get blood donations, Ramirez said. While most people’s journey to the Red Cross are all different, many of the volunteers are spouses or family members of service members. Ramstein Red Cross volunteer Arlene Williams realized it was time to volunteer once her husband got involved. “I just wanted to do something

good with my time,” said Williams. “So when he started, I started volunteering too.” Well aware of the Red Cross’ impact, Williams dove in with the volunteering. “My dad worked for the United Nations and in Sri Lanka the Red Cross was always very involved.” said Williams. “So growing up I always knew about the Red Cross. I later volunteered for the German Red Cross and then I moved away for a while so I didn’t really do much with them. So when my husband started volunteering for the Red Cross I was motivated to come back.”

Volunteers are the pulse of the Red Cross. They allow the program to continue aiding and assisting service members throughout the department of defense. While volunteers give the Red Cross life, the Red Cross gives something valuable back to its volunteers. “Volunteering is a great way to bridge the résumé gap,” said Ramirez. “You don’t go back to the states and look at your résumé and wonder why there is a giant gap. Everyone knows who the Red Cross is. They’re a huge help to our forces and they’re a huge help to hospitals and health services back home.”

Officials urge retirees to transition club membership to virtual portal by Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center Public Affairs JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIOLACKLAND, Texas — For many Air Force retirees, a club membership is one way to stay connected to the service they love. Air Force Services Activity officials are encouraging retirees to activate their new Air Force Club Member Portal accounts before losing that connection. “Our retiree population is a special part of our Air Force family. Their contributions to shaping the Air Force of today are invaluable and we want to keep them connected to our Airmen and our installations,” said Col. Donna Turner, the AFSVA commander.

The Air Force began transitioning away from a club credit card to the Air Force Club Member Portal at six pilot installations in May: Osan Air Base, South Korea; Thule AB, Greenland; Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri; Eglin AFB, Florida; Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, Texas, and JB Charleston, South Carolina. Current member information was automatically loaded on the club portal, but members need to log in and update payment information to maintain their membership. The free MemberPlanet app is available in the App Store or Google Play. The weband app-based system allows members to choose their payment methods and receive real-time event information directly on their smart devices or

computers through the portal. “Members can now use their credit or debit card of choice,” said Jonathan Boyd, the AFSVA chief of nonappropriated fund food and beverage operations. “It’s an easy process … you simply update your profile using your smartphone, tablet, laptop or desktop computer.” Members without easy access to smart devices or computers can also stop by their local club for assistance. “Through the club portal, club members will have easy access to a wide variety of information such as events and special programs scheduled, meal specials and other notifications in near real time,” Boyd said. The portal will be rolled out across the Air Force Aug. 1, 2017. Members

can either show their digital membership card through the MemberPlanet App on their smart devices or print a card from the app. The card features the member’s name, preferred club, and an expiration date. “Air Force Club membership is a tradition,” Turner said. “It’s where our Airmen experience, learn and share our Air Force culture. Our clubs provide resiliency to our Airmen and their families. This new approach to membership will make it easier for our Airmen to stay connected with our Air Force tradition and build on the culture and esprit de corps established by those who have previously served.” For more information, contact your local club or visit www.myairforcelife. com/clubs/cmp.aspx.

AETC announces changes to developmental special duty assignments by Marilyn Holliday Air Education and Training Command JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIORANDOLPH, Texas — Air Force officials are making three substantial changes to the developmental special duty process that will significantly improve the Air Force’s ability to fill these important positions by adding more flexibility to the process and increasing opportunities for NCOs. The changes include opening military training instructor opportunities to staff sergeants, reverting the technical training instructor process for three-level awarding schoolhouses back to the Enlisted Quarterly Assignment Listing-Plus website and lowering the physical training score for all DSD and TTI positions to the Air Force standard of 75 points versus the former DSD standard of 80.

Rank changes for military training instructors

The change allows staff sergeants to be nominated for military training instructors overseeing basic military training. This change replaces the 2012 policy that limited the ranks of MTIs to technical and master sergeants. The DSD process for MTIs will now afford commanders the opportunity to nominate staff sergeants with at least two years’ time in

grade for this critically important special duty. This change more appropriately aligns the eligibility aspect of the nomination process with other DSD opportunities that already allow staff sergeants to serve, such as military training leaders, professional military education instructors and recruiters. “Allowing skilled staff sergeants to once again serve as MTIs provides greater NCO developmental opportunities,” said Chief Master Sgt. Stephanie DeSouza, the Operations and Special Duty Airmen Career Management Division superintendent at the Air Force Personnel Center. “We are confident that mature, experienced staff sergeants have the skill set necessary to thrive as MTIs and better balance the (basic military training) work load.” There are currently 557 Airmen serving as certified MTIs at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland. “MTIs represent the Air Force enlisted corps on a national stage and they are called upon to develop America’s sons and daughters into our next generation of Airmen,” DeSouza said.

Technical training instructor assignment process reverts back to EQUAL Plus

The second change authorizes Airmen interested in volunteering for the Air Force’s TTI duty to volunteer for these positions directly through

the EQUAL Plus assignment system. This change became effective June 26, 2017, when the initial group of EQUAL Plus advertisements began appearing live on the Assignment Management System. “Requirements for these instructors are rank and Air Force specialty code-specific,” said Chief Master Sgt. Dave Staton, the command chief for Air Education and Training Command. “It has been difficult to identify enough of these AFSC-specific, qualified candidates using the DSD nomination process. Through EQUAL Plus, we expect to find qualified candidates in a more timely manner and have the flexibility to react to shortnotice changes and requests for fills to include instructor increases.” Since July 2013, more than 2,700 TTI positions were included in the DSD process along with nine other special duties that were filled utilizing a commander nomination process. Staton said using EQUAL Plus should prove more effective to fill and manage the assignment process for technical school instructors. Airmen interested in applying to become TTIs can begin looking for positions via AMS after June 25. A large number of TTI positions will be filled over the next year which presents an excellent career opportunity for many Airmen.

PT score changes to 75

Effective the fall 2017 DSD assignment cycle, the physical train-

ing test scores will now be set at 75 or above on the previous three assessments, which aligns this requirement with the Air Force standard. “This change just makes sense for the process,” said Maj. Gen. Mark Anthony Brown, the AETC vice commander. “If you meet Air Force standards, you should be qualified to perform in a DSD or TTI position. Brown said this change also opens the aperture and allows more Airmen to qualify and compete for these positions “that are so important in professional development.” Identified as developmental due to their unique leadership roles and the responsibility to mentor and mold young Airmen, the nine DSDs are: career assistance advisor, military training instructor, military training leader, Air Force Academy military training instructor, Airman and Family Readiness Center NCO, first sergeant, Air Force Honor Guard NCO, recruiter and PME instructor. Developmental special duty qualifications are outlined in the special duty catalog. Additional information about specific rank requirements, nomination eligibility criteria, process and other specifics can be found on myPers under Special Duty Assignment Programs on the Active Duty: Enlisted Assignments Home Page or select “Active Duty Enlisted” from the dropdown menu and search “DSD.”

Preventing tick-borne diseases Story and photo by Senior Airman Devin Boyer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs In Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany, more than 2,000 cases of Lyme disease occur every year; and from 2000 to 2010, 3,126 cases of tickborne Encephalitis occurred in all of Germany. Lyme disease and TBE are infectious diseases transmitted to humans and animals through the bite of an infected tick. Bacteria from the tick’s saliva enters the body while the tick feeds on blood. In addition to ticks, people acquire TBE by consuming infected raw dairy products from cows, sheep, and goats. “With it being the summer months, people are doing more outdoor activities so it’s important for people to be aware that there are diseases that they can pick up from ticks,” said Staff Sgt. Maria Rodriguez, 86th Aerospace Medicine Squadron epidemiology non-commissioned officer in charge. Early signs and symptoms of Lyme disease include fever, chills, headache, fatigue, muscle and joint aches, swollen lymph nodes, and a rash that resembles a “bull’s eye” which may feel warm to the touch. TBE symptoms may include fever, discomfort, anorexia, muscle aches, headache, nausea and vomiting. While it is important to know how to identify the symptoms after

Pets are susceptible to tick bites and tick-borne diseases the same way humans are. According to PetMD, tick infestations are more common in dogs than cats. Be sure to check pets for ticks every time they come in from outside.

86th Medical Squadron public health technician, said to use repellent containing 20 percent diethyltoluamide, commonly known as DEET, to ward off ticks. Due to the nature of summer, many people will likely go on hikes and camp in the woods. Individuals who partake in these activities should frequently examine their body, clothes and gear for ticks. Pets can also bring ticks indoors from the outside when people least expect it. So it is important to check them for their safety and the pet owners as well. “If you’re hiking, make sure you walk in the center of the trail, not so much near the tall grass and bushes,” said Morton. According to www.tickencounter. org, ticks do not jump or drop from trees onto people’s heads. If a tick is found on the head, it most likely latched onto the foot or leg and crawled up from there. The public health team said if a tick is found on your body, it needs to be removed immediately. First, with fine tipped tweezers, grasp the mouth part of the tick, as close to the skin as possible. Then, pull back

slowly and steadily with firm force. Don’t twist or jerk the tick; this can cause the jaws to break off and remain in the skin. If this happens, remove them with tweezers. If you are unable to remove the mouth easily with clean tweezers, leave it alone and let the skin heal. Finally, dispose of the live tick by submersing it in alcohol and placing it in a sealed bag or container. Never crush a tick with your fingers. If you develop a rash or fever within several weeks of removing a tick, see a doctor. Be sure to tell them about your recent tick bite, when the bite occurred, and where you most likely came into contact with the tick. Ramstein Public Health sends tick specimens through the Human Tick Test Kit Program to the Army Public Health Center for testing and identification. Individuals interested in getting a tick tested for diseases can bring the tick specimen to Public Health at the Ramstein Clinic, Bldg. 2114. For more information on Lyme Disease or any other disease go to www.cdc.gov or call Public Health at 479-2086 or 06371-46-2086.

Seminar provides transition tools for service members by Stefan Alford U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs “Soldier For Life” isn’t just another catch phrase. At least not when you look at all that it entails to provide a wide range of transition support services to separating or retiring service members. As part of that effort, the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz SFLTransition Assistance Program sponsors a free upcoming event open to all service members of all U.S. military branches, their spouses, veterans and civilians to provide the knowledge, skills and self-confidence necessary to be competitive and successful in the global workforce and to achieve post-military service goals. The Afterburner Military Transition Seminar takes place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m July 28 at Armstrong’s Club on Vogelweh Housing. “We want to encourage transitioning service members to make informed decisions through benefits counseling and employment assistance to ensure a successful transition from active duty,” said Mary Steele, contractor manager for the SFL-TAP at Kleber Kaserne. The Afterburner seminar (partnered with Hiring Our Heroes and USAA) is geared toward developing an executable career plan with objectives, networking strategy, interviewing skills, she explained, adding that it also focuses on “how to shift from a military to a business mindset and how to identify specific industries that need military leader skill sets. The event features leading subject matter experts in the commercial and private sector of U.S. industry. “Today’s civilian job market is highly competitive and demands well-prepared, articulate individuals, able to stand out from their competition, so attending job fairs, transition hiring events, career skills programs and transition seminars, help service members to devel-

op a comprehensive strategy to land the right job,” said Steele. Post-military employment is rated as one of the biggest challenges facing veterans, she added, citing that a national survey of active and retired military person-

nel found that 38 percent consider the transition back to civilian life to be the most significant challenge; with 24 percent believing that finding civilian employment is the greatest challenge. That’s why “Soldier For Life” is much more than a buzzword.

“TAP is a shared responsibility,” said Steele, “and requires a coordinated effort by a number of federal agencies to include the Department of Defense, Department of Labor, and Department of Veteran Affairs.”

She also emphasized that while service members have specific responsibilities regarding their separation and transition, “SFL-TAP is a commander’s program at the lowest level and requires leadership support in order for it to be successful.”

Civilian misconduct roundtable shares information, best practices Story and photo by Stefan Alford U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs Representatives from every major Army installation in Europe gathered at the Assistant Civilian Misconduct Action Authorities roundtable in June, sponsored by Installation Management Command-Europe. “The Roundtable provided ACMAAs opportunities for positive interaction and collaboration that never seemed likely before this type of event,” said Don Gwinn, USAG RP Civilian Misconduct Program manager. “This roundtable also provided ACMAAs an invaluable opportunity to discuss best practices, identify barriers, recommend changes, and discuss concerns with their colleagues and community stakeholders in related fields.” The weeklong roundtable was organized through the efforts of Gwinn and his team — Robert Leist and Rick Anderson — after hosting similar events the previous two years that brought other garrison ACMAAs together for training and seminars. Last month’s sessions included presentations from a variety of experts in related areas, such as legal, law enforcement (both U.S. forces and host-nation police), the Criminal Investigation Command, the Inspector General Defense Criminal Investigative Services, the Army and Air Force Exchange Services Loss Prevention Program, Department of Defense Education Activity school administrators, family advocacy, substance abuse program, behavioral health, safety, and human resources. “In addition to providing much needed training and bringing best practices together, the roundtable provided a phenomenal forum wherein ACMAAs can meet subject matter experts from throughout the USAG RP community, receive briefings on their programs and learn new ways to interact with their SME’s from their respective Garrisons when addressing misconduct,” explained Gwinn. “The wealth of professionals at the roundtable represented multiple law enforcement authorities, legal advisors, installation access and security professionals, and professionals that can help mitigate future misconduct by addressing the root cause from various counseling and support services from multiple providers throughout our community.” As such, the roundtable focused on resources available in responding to disciplinary issues as well as preventing them.

More than 60 subject matter experts provided information at the Installation Management Command-Europe 2017 Assistant Civilian Misconduct Action Authorities roundtable held at Sembach in June.

The charter of the Civilian Misconduct Program is to address legal infractions/crimes committed by family members, U.S. civilian employees, contractors, retirees and Army-affiliated local national employees — all of whom could also be subject to host-nation laws, military reprimands and possible revocation of logistical support or privileges. “Most civilians (here) are under the impression that only Soldiers are under specific rules … that the SOFA (Status of Forces Agreement) is so different here that nothing will ever happen to the civilian,” said Leslie Smith, USAG Italy Civilian Misconduct Officer who attended the roundtable, citing a common misperception. In fact, the host nation has exclusive criminal jurisdiction over civilians under the SOFA. “Civilians don’t understand that logistical support for Armyassociated personnel is a privilege that can be revoked for misconduct,” added another roundtable participant, Ken Hughes, Director of Emergency Services at USAG Benelux. “The Civilian Misconduct Program provides fair, meaningful and impartial resolution of incidents concerning misconduct of civilians overseas,” explained Gwinn. “The program establishes administrative actions and procedures to be taken in response to civilian misconduct to safeguard the resources, facilities and welfare of U.S. Forces communities in Europe.” The most common types of civilian misconduct cases are similar across the European garrisons and involve

shoplifting, property crimes, student misconduct, domestic violence, assault and drug-related infractions. The role of the ACMAAs is to compile reports, conduct interviews, collect data, coordinate with supporting agencies and supply vital information to the CMAA (typically the garrison commander and their deputy) while providing recommendations as well. How those actions are processed across IMCOM-E was part of the roundtable discussion. “This event is not only for ACMAAs benefit and knowledge, it’s also beneficial for our stakeholders at USAREUR, IMCOM-E, and garrison internal and external stakeholders to better understand the civilian misconduct process and how we can better work with each other to create a partnership and jointly work toward decreasing misconduct throughout the region,” said Gwinn. Ultimately, however, it’s the civilians who fall under the program’s auspices who need to be most aware of the ramifications of misconduct, he added. “The public should be more aware of how misconduct can negatively affect their privilege to remain in the overseas command, and what they can do to prevent misbehavior,” stated Gwinn. “Misconduct does not only affect the individual directly involved; it affects their sponsors, their units, their employment, their other family members and the military community as a whole. The public must realize that their negative actions while overseas are a reflection on how the host nation perceives

the U.S. presence in their country.” Some tips that Gwinn and his staff promote to help prevent incidents of misconduct are: • Make sure that all family members have positive ways to spend their time. • Work with other community members on solving common problems. • Report crimes or suspicious activities to law enforcement immediately, and encourage family members to do the same. • Teach family members to settle arguments without violence in school and the community. • Get involved and help make communities safe and secure places to live. “The roundtable was an important event that brought together over 60 subject matter experts, attendees, and participants from across Europe,” summarized Gwinn. “The event was a great idea and hopefully IMCOM-E will continue this initiative and make this an annual event for all IMCOM-E ACMAAs. This event provides a very important forum for ACMAAs to interact with colleagues and community stakeholders. We are grateful to all roundtable attendees for their valued participation, support and commitment during the event. We are also grateful that IMCOM Europe gave us the opportunity to be part of an exciting forum that had lots of energy, was well facilitated, and had excellent participation.”

THE DRAMATIC BURG ELTZ

Story courtesy of MilitaryInGermany.com read more at the http://militaryingermany.com/the-dramatic-burg-eltz I remember when we first moved to Germany, I found myself mesmerized by castles. I actually saw a Facebook post where someone mentioned that they had lived in Europe for over two years and they were tired of castles. What? I was seriously offended. How can you ever see too many castles?

Most Impressive Fast forward three years and I get it. However, a visit from my daughter prompted a day trip to a medieval castle nestled in the hills above the Mosel River between Koblenz and Trier. Burg Eltz is owned by a branch of the same family (the Eltz family) that lived there in the 12th century and 33 generations ago. Burg Eltz is the castle that has impressed me the most and is now my favorite castle in Germany. Even in

a region where it is almost impossible not to stumble over some castle ruins, this castle really stands out. Not many things are more associated with Europe than castles; and after visiting Burg Eltz, I have to say it’s one of the best I have ever seen. Why? Well, let me tell you why. That WOW Factor Burg Eltz sits in a lush green valley, hidden away from main road traffic. It is the first castle that has ever actually taken my breath away as we rounded a corner in the shuttle and got a look at the view. Unlike the vast majority of castles along the Mosel and Rhine Rivers, this was one of the few that has never been destroyed or badly damaged. Burg Eltz’s setting is simply stunning, as it sits perched on a rock and surrounded by thick-wooded hills and the babbling Elzbach creek on three sides. This was apparently a strategy, since the location was perfect for exacting tolls on passing traders, which provided much of the early wealth to Burg Eltz’s residents. Getting There You can reach the castle on foot by the scenic fifteen-minute walk through the woods from the parking lot or taking a much longer hike

from a nearby town. On the other hand, you can cheat like we did and take the shuttle. Either way, you will have a “wow” moment when you round the corner and see Burg Eltz lying before you.

tours include a visit to the rustic medieval kitchen and stately Knight’s Hall, where the families gathered for large feasts and conversation.

Inside the Castle Walls Once inside the castle walls, the main courtyard is a hodgepodge of design styles, reflecting the fact that three different branches of the family once resided in the structure together.

Location Burg Eltz is located in the Mosel valley and is an easy drive, although the GPS address took us a bit off course. As you get closer to the castle, you will see signs for parking.Address: Burg-EltzStrasse 1, 56294 Muenstermaifeld, Germany The castle is just under 2 hours north of Kaiserslautern.

Guided Tours All tours are guided and depart every 10 to 15 minutes in German. Guided tours in other languages, including French, Dutch, and English, are also available but depart less frequently. Even more gems are present inside the residential quarters, as all
