ELEFSIS, Greece — More than 150 Ramstein Airmen from the 86th Airlift Wing and 435th Air Ground Operations Wing, along with U.S. Army jumpmasters, participated in Stolen Cerberus, a two-week ﬂight training deployment designed to incorporate various training methods to maintain proﬁciency during deployed operations from Feb. 2 to today. The training mission brought U.S. and Greek military forces together to build upon and strengthen the bonds shared between the two countries, while continuing to improve interoperability as Greece and the U.S. continue to work together in operations worldwide. “We are here to build partnerships while working with our Greek counterparts as we exchange airlift and airdrop tactics and ideas. Diversity is our strength by Lt. Col. John Frazier 86th Maintenance Group I learned early in life that diversity equals strength. I attended Robert E. Lamberton public school in Philadelphia at the age of 10. Though Lamberton had a reputation as a good academic school, diversity of the student body is what made it special. Lamberton was one of the few public schools in Philadelphia that accommodated children in grades kindergarten through 12th. In addition to being diverse across age groups, Lamberton was far more racially and ethnically diverse than most Philadelphia schools at that time. The student body was racially integrated at about 45 percent white, 40 percent black and 15 percent from various other ethnic groups. Considering my previous student population, which was close to 100 percent black students, the transfer

to Lamberton became a life altering experience. I will never forget the first bus ride. The closer we got to school, the more I noticed students getting on the bus who did not look like me. When we got to the final bus stop, students of all ages, color and shades headed toward the school. For me, it was surreal. For the students who had already been attending this school, it was just another day. I would later discover that we were even more diverse. For example, some of the black students who I thought looked like me actually came from vastly different cultures. Many of these students had family who grew up in France, the Caribbean and Africa. The same was true with the white students. The more I learned about each group of students, the more I was intrigued about our cultural differences. Many, if not all of the white

students had a strong sense of their cultural heritages. They all lived in neighborhoods with strong identities with Italian, Irish, Polish and even Jewish-American roots. Some of their parents or grandparents were first generation Americans who did not even speak English. Lamberton was not a melting pot of cultures, but rather a mixed salad bowl. Most of us came and went back to home environments that were much less culturally diverse than the school we all attended. We brought our strong cultures to school each day. We celebrated, discussed and worked through our commonalities and differences at a personal level. Like most other students throughout the country, we played sports, dated, hung out and attended each other’s birthday parties. Even though there were racerelated issues at times, we worked through them with meaningful dialogue and learned life lessons in

the process. The Lamberton experience better prepared each of us for graduation and the realities of life. In the U.S. military, we learn starting in basic training to use this same position in order to trust the Airmen, Sailors, Soldiers and Marines next to us. We know the success of the mission and getting home alive is a product of how well we work together. Intuitively, we know it is in everyone’s interest to share and learn about other cultural backgrounds. In doing so, we strengthen the relationships that make us the best armed forces in the world. February is Black History Month. More than ever, there are many programs and events for people to take part in to learn about and share the African-American heritage. We are blessed to have an incredible group of men and women who serve from all backgrounds, and it is our diversity that gives us strength.

Well-fed and exercised, the king of the beasts is there to be seen in all its glory. There’s even a nice barrier to ensure the lion stays on its side and the people stay on theirs. In other words, there are no unauthorized snacks for the lion. But imagine this — the lion, wandering the plains of Africa, hunting and stalking prey, majestic as one of the great creatures. The lion knows it is the top of the food chain, that it has its pick of the menu from what wanders the plains. Large or small, it could be dinner for the beast. One night, the lion is waiting patiently for

It’s waiting, and waiting patiently. When prey comes, it employs another well-known lion technique — stalking. Sneaking up on its prey, the lion is focused — so focused that, if seen, it will freeze and look into the distance as if nothing was happening, then go quickly back to its task as soon as the prey looks away. How does the lion stay so focused? One of many African proverbs comes to mind: “A lion does not turn around when a small dog barks.” “A roaring lion kills no game,” is another phrase heard in the African world. We can get very distracted at times. People, events and thoughts that in the grand scheme of things don’t really matter can grab our attention. Critics, success, bumps in the road, fawning over an achievement, temporary setbacks and things that we don’t understand or sometimes have any control over will cause us to lose our focus. For

There is nothing wrong with that focus until something distracts them, or they miss the direction of an option they had not previously considered. What is the goal? How is life to be lived? Many people believe many things, but there is wisdom in the words of the African proverbs. What are your long-term goals? How are you working to reach them? What about your dayto-day goals? Are you stagnant and making noise or getting somewhere along the road of life? How are you conducting yourself as life happens around you? Take a moment to think about, write out and review your goals, both long-term and shortterm. What tasks go with those goals, and how are you getting there? Ask what is distracting you from them? How do you best keep focus on what really matters?

• A road construction project affecting traffic entering and leaving Ramstein Air Base through the West Gate will start Monday and end in about six months. The project site for construction will be the bridge over state road L363 leading from the base to the 435th Construction and Training Squadron site. Starting Monday, the ramp coming from Ramstein-Miesenbach will be closed to traffic. The contractor will start cutting trees and then progress in phases to repair the bridge that crosses L363. Therefore, expect multiple lanes to be closed in various phases. • Construction work will begin Monday on the parking lot in front of Bldg. 426 on Ramstein. The parking lot will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic during this time. Pedestrian access to the Ramstein Northside Post Office will be maintained by a sidewalk along Jefferson Avenue. Post office parking can be found at the aquatics center or golf course parking lots. The sidewalk access will be maintained, but parking in the area will be impacted significantly. The reconstruction is needed to maintain roadway safety, ride quality and reduce vehicle deterioration. Traffic delays can be expected through March 17. • Arizona Boulevard on Vogelweh will be restricted to one lane in front of Bldgs. 1034 and 1035 from Monday to Feb 28. A contractor will be connecting the recently installed water line to the existing water line, fire hydrants and building water supply lines. Traffic in both directions will still be possible, but will be controlled with traffic lights. • Construction work for the installation of new driveways to the Ramstein Commissary parking lot will continue until Feb. 28. New driveway access to the commissary will be installed and removed in three overlapping phases. New York Avenue will be restricted to

The shooting association of Nanstein Castle will conduct a seminar on gun salute shooting from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. March 8 on its compound at Fleischackerloch in Landstuhl. There will be increased background noise from about 100 gun salutes.

The Ramstein Clinic is asking patients to call on days other than Mondays since Monday is the highest call volume day for the clinic. On average, the clinic ﬁelds 40 percent more calls than on any other business day of the week, and on-hold times can exceed 30 minutes. By simply calling on a different day whenever possible, the clinic will be able to assist in a more timely fashion.

However, Sean Osborne, who works at the passport office, said it is only one appointment per customer. For example, a sponsor who needs new cards for him- or herself and three children would need to create four adjacent appointments at the site. “It’s an easy system to use,” said David

Lingo, the garrison’s ID cards and passports section supervisor. Immediately upon confirming their appointments, customers receive an email with detailed instructions about what they need to bring to the ID card office. Lingo said customers must read and comply with the instructions to ensure they are not turned away. 86th SFS first-term Airman defends, protects, empowers Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Holly Mansfield 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Editors note: This is the first story in a three-part series about first-term Airmen working different jobs at Ramstein. For some Airmen fresh out of technical school, stepping out of an aircraft onto foreign soil can bring a blanket of silence and terror upon them. Knowing they are going to be part of the Air Force’s premier installation can put added pressure on them, but first-term Airmen of Team Ramstein mold themselves into competent, reliable and responsible service members. When stationed at a base working for a large wing with a lot of responsibilities, many first-term Airmen take on high priority tasks. Duties like guarding and checking identification cards at the gate or patrolling any of the military installations in the KMC is a major part of securing the safety of service members, civilians and resources throughout the area. “We get a bad stigma as cops, but I feel we help a lot of people here,” said Airman 1st Class Christian Kampe, 86th Security Forces Squadron defender. “We protect all the military personnel and their families in the KMC by performing entry control

and various other activities.” Having the responsibility of protecting more than 50,000 American military members and their families in the KMC can cause stress for many security forces defenders, but for Airmen like Kampe, seeing the benefits of being a defender makes the job enjoyable. “I love my job, because there’s literally no other career field that allows me to do so much,” Kampe said. “It’s a lot of fun and varies each day.” Along with duties at work, Kampe and other first-term Airmen are active in the community and academics. “I’ve done as many certifications for my job as I can while being an A1C,” Kampe said. “Before joining the Air Force I was attending college, and I hope to continue with my education once I complete my upgrade training, but for now I spend a lot of time volunteering around Ramstein.” Getting as many certifications as possible early in his career has put Kampe above most first-term Airmen. Certifying for jobs usually given to NCOs showed security forces leadership that he is committed. “He is an outstanding member of the 86th Airlift Wing team, who recently completed his certification as a base defense operations center controller,” said Master Sgt. Scott Brown, flight chief, 86th Security Forces

Squadron alpha flight, flight chief. “Having him complete this certification, which is normally accomplished by ranking senior airmen or staff sergeants, as an A1C is unheard of and is a great testament to his dedication.” More responsibilities are required of base defense operations center controllers, who work in the hub of the security forces squadron; they must be able to communicate to other agencies during emergency situations. “The base defense operations center is the nerve center of security forces,” Kampe said. “Whoever is the BDOC controller is the number one conduit during an emergency situation on this base. They coordinate with command post, firefighters and medics.” Communication with other agencies puts a lot of demand on first-term Airmen in security forces, but with the help of teamwork they are able to complete the job. “The majority of people I work with are first-term Airmen,” Kampe said. “With security forces there is a lot of responsibility for new Airmen, but the ones I know are very effective at what they do. We work very well together and we get the job done.” Being an important part of such a large mission, firstterm Airmen help provide world-class security to support over one-third of all U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air

Forces Africa civilian and military personnel stationed in Europe. “First-term Airmen are an essential part of the 86th SFS accomplishing the Air Force mission from controlling entry onto the installation to standing guard to billions in U.S. and NATO assets,” Brown said. “This just covers the home-station mission and does not begin to touch on our numerous deployment requirements, which spans three combatant commands.” Working hard and effectively at a large base means Airmen like Kampe have a huge impact on the day-to-day missions of different organizations, such as USAFE-

AFAFRICA and NATO’s Allied Air Component Command Headquarters Ramstein. “First-term Airmen assigned to the 86th SFS have a huge impact here at Ramstein Air Base,” Brown said. “With USAFE-AFAFRICA, 3rd Air Force, NATO’s Allied Air Component Command Headquarters Ramstein and various military and civilian tenant agencies working here, they are the very first impression people have of the base. The 86th SFS Airmen know this and take pride in our professionalism and our ability to defend Ramstein, ensuring successful execution of air, space and cyber operations.”

The event, the first of its kind according to Kaiserslautern ACAP officials, is open to service members and family members throughout Europe. “One of the most common concerns that we often hear from our transitioning service members are the lack of job fairs and employers coming to the area,” said Tamara Brethouwer, Kaiserslautern

ACAP counselor. “This was our way to remedy that. This is us bringing the employers to you. We actually have some Soldiers who have already uploaded their resume and have been already contacted by recruiters.” Job-seekers participating in the event can upload their resumes, build a profile, view and apply for jobs, visit employer booths and talk to recruiters. “This is Europe wide, and we’ve also opened it up in Camp Arifjan, Kuwait,” said Naini Robinson, Kaiserslautern ACAP counselor. “There are other installations that are jumping on it as well. This is not just for Kaiserslautern.” Fifteen to 30 employers from companies such as Wells Fargo, Lowe’s, Capital One and Xerox, among others, are expected to be online.

“Depending on if this launch is a success, this is something we would like to offer on a continual basis … so hopefully we will have enough support and we’re able to continue,” Brethouwer said. Everything to live for by Airman Larissa Greatwood 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Many times there are difficult obstacles to overcome in life. Not only can these obstructions be mentally and physically challenging to individuals, but they can be painful to discuss with others. Staff Sgt. Craig West, 693rd Intelligence Support Squadron plans and installation manager, struggled from a young age to cope with certain dynamics in his life. To this day, he still finds it hard to accept the haunting reality of his past decisions. “We all have things in life that are hard to admit or discuss,” West said. “The hardest thing that I’ve had to admit to myself is that I’m gay and tried to commit suicide.” Because of West’s upbringing, he felt shameful for being homosexual, because most people in the town he grew up in were traditional and conservative. “Where I grew up, you were Catholic,” West said. “If you weren’t Catholic, you were Methodist. It was a very conservative area. Being gay in that area doesn’t happen.” Growing up, West knew he was different from his peers. He felt out of place around everyone in school. “Going through high school, I wasn’t like the rest of the guys,” West said. “I wasn’t looking at girls.” Though he didn’t participate in chasing women, no one knew he was gay. In fact, he was terrified to let anyone in on his secret. “When I was a sophomore my cousin, Allen, came out to my family,” he said. “My father and his two brothers gave him 24 hours to get out of the state. I didn’t want that to happen to me, so I hid it. I hid it so well that no one had a single clue.” West grew to hate himself. He focused his emotions on school and tried to numb himself from the pain he felt. He knew if he told anyone, they would reject him, especially the ones he loved most — his family. “I went off to college and buried myself in work,” West said. “I was doing 18 to 22 credit hours a semester, working two to three jobs, doing anything to keep myself preoccupied. I started shutting down my emotions. The only emotion I couldn’t shut down was my

Ramstein boasts lottery of numbered units, heritage by Airman 1st Class Jordan Castelan 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

amstein possesses a grabbag of numbered squadrons, detachments and globally separated units. How these squadrons came under control of the 86th Airlift Wing starts back when the wing was first established. Jan. 13, 1942, marked the inception of the 86th AW and its three squadrons: the 309th, 310th and 312th Bombardment Squadrons. By the time the 86th AW established its first headquarters in Germany, it continued a now long-running tradition of having squadrons numbered with no correlation to the wing. Currently, Ramstein has two dif-

ferent civil engineer squadrons, two different force support squadrons, two different security forces squadrons, two different airlift squadrons and a handful of GSUs and detachments. How did all these squadrons become a part of the 86th AW, and what differences do each of these units have from each other? “The exchange of units is something that happens frequently,” said Silvano Wueschner, 86th AW historian. “As wings gain units they always try to keep those with the strongest heritage as well.” Other squadrons became part of the Ramstein family through structural reorganization. “The 86th and 786th Force Support Squadrons came into existence after the merger between the previous 86th

Raymond Mason, U.S. Army G-4 (Logistics) deputy chief of staff, presented the CLEA for deployment excellence to Soldiers of the 635th. “They beat out literally hundreds of small, medium (and) large units — Active, Reserve and National Guard,” said Mason during his remarks. “A

He did the only thing he felt he could do to distract himself; he buried himself in his work again. He soon realized that he couldn’t dwell on his hurt and sadness. “After Jess’s death, I felt demoralized and depressed. I moped around a lot and at one point I realized, Jess would be kicking my butt up one side and down the other if I didn’t try to go back out there and at least try to live life,” West said. “Slowly, but surely, I got there.” With a newfound confidence, West was able to find happiness and closure. Soon after, something happened that would change the lives of many. “Something incredible happened; our president signed the repeal of ‘don’t ask, don’t tell,’” West said. “I didn’t believe it was real. I started to think, ‘Well, what if they repeal the repeal?’ It finally hit me when an Airman posted a video on YouTube of himself calling his father and letting him know he was gay.” With homosexuality being open in the military, West felt he was able to finally start opening up, and the hardest people to tell would be his family. “I decided I was going to tell the person closest to me, my cousin Delisa. When she came to visit me, I finally told her what happened at Osan and everything else,” West said. “Next thing I know, I have a right-hook coming at me across my face. Then she gave me a giant hug and said, ‘Everything will be OK.’

WASHINGTON — The Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Welsh III published his professional reading list Feb. 6. “This year’s CSAF reading list was designed to build understanding,” Welsh said in his message to Airmen. “There are stories of Airmen, fellow service members and leaders from many different backgrounds. I bet there’s a book, a movie, a piece of artwork, or a TED Talk in there that you can relate to.” This year’s list contains 12 books — nine from Welsh and three selected by Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force James A. Cody — seven ﬁlms, seven TED talks, Web-based resources, artwork and photography selections. “Every day is an opportunity to tell our Air Force story. Books offer the knowledge to help appreciate and, at times, better understand these stories,” Cody said in his message. “These three books provide new perspectives. They offer new ideas on how we can connect and communicate to reach personal and professional goals.” Selections will be available at base libraries within the next month. Most notably, 635th Soldiers were recognized for providing transportation movement control support at Ramstein Air Base to thousands of service members on deployment and redeployment status. In 2012, they coordinated buses and security for more than 3,000 personnel deploying to Afghanistan. Additionally, the unit received, processed and shipped

After all, he couldn’t keep it a secret forever. “I finally worked up the courage and called my mom,” West said. “I told her, and she said, ‘Craig, you’re my son. I’m going to love you no matter what. By the way, I already knew. I’ve always known.’ My relationship has gotten better with my mom because of this.” The acceptance he was finally receiving enabled West to be himself, and he was finally happy. “When I was stationed in Osan, I met fantastic people there who helped finish what just started,” West said. “I laugh and smile now. Before, I was a very ugly human being.” If he thought it would be difficult telling his mother, it would be practically impossible to admit it to his father. It took a lot for him to finally work up the courage, but West finally made the call. “One night I gathered the nerve and called my dad. After I told him I’m gay, he said he was very disappointed in me, then he hung up the phone,” West said. “My dad and I didn’t talk for more than a year. When it was time to leave Osan, I called my mom and told her I couldn’t come home. She asked me why. I said, ‘Think about dad. Think about the family.’ She told me

not to worry and that she’d take care of it.” His father’s reaction far from encouraged West to go home, but this is his family. He knew they’d still love him, though they may not fully agree with his lifestyle. When West arrived home, he came home to an unexpected warm welcome. “After I got through customs at the airport, I saw my dad crying,” West said. “He said to me, ‘I’m so sorry.’ I had never seen my dad cry before. To this day though, I wouldn’t say my dad’s necessarily OK with it. As he says, I’m still his son so he still loves me, but he doesn’t agree with my ‘choice.’ If I could choose, I’d choose to be straight. There’s so much less crap you have to deal with.” With the weight of his secret off his shoulders, West is able to live his life the way he wants. Though he struggled to get where he is today, West said he’d rather be here than dead. “If you get one thing from my story, I hope it’s if you’re in a situation like mine, please don’t harm yourself,” he said. “It’s not worth it. To the family, friends and supervisors: don’t let someone you know feel so alone that they attempt the unthinkable. Talk to them, not at them. Let them know that you care and that someone is there for them. To those of you in my situation: don’t give up hope. Hold on to it, cling to it and ﬁght for it with every ounce of your being. Death is far too permanent.”

Healthy dating for teens by Emily McCormick Ramstein Family Advocacy February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. If you are not aware of this issue, you are not alone. In a survey from 2012, 81 percent of parents believed teen dating violence was not an issue or stated they don’t know if it’s an issue. Unfortunately, because teen dating violence is often a problem that teens keep secret, even parents who have an open, close relationship with their son or daughter may be unaware it is happening. In reality, 1 in 10 American teenagers are physically abused by a boyfriend or girlfriend each year. Others may be sexually or emotionally abused. Here is some information that may help you talk about this issue with your teen. What is teen dating abuse? Dating abuse occurs when one partner seeks to gain power and control over the other by emotional, sexual, physical or social abuse. Teen dating violence can include the following: • Physical abuse — non acciden-

tal use of force causing fear or injury (hitting, slapping, shoving, biting, strangling) • Emotional/verbal abuse — behaviors such as demeaning, belittling, name calling, threats, isolating from friends/family, stalking, extreme jealousy • Sexual abuse — unwanted sexual contact • Cyber abuse — using social media to demean, threaten, isolate, humiliate. This could include spreading rumors about the partner, uploading pictures without consent, stalking. Teen dating abuse usually involves a pattern of behavior; the behavior typically intensifies over time, causing the teen to be increasingly at risk. Often the relationship seems to start well, with the teen feeling special and valued. It then evolves into a relationship that is exclusive to the point of isolating the teen from friends and family. Some signs that abuse may be happening in your teen’s relationship: • He/she may cancel plans with friends, withdraw from sports or other activities.

Teens stay in an abusive relationship for a number of reasons. They may feel embarrassed, ashamed or confused and expect that no one will believe them. They may also lack the ability to recognize what abuse is. They may have been threatened by their partner. They may not be ready to end the relationship and fear that their parents will put an end to the relationship. They may also think that parents will be angry at them for not telling sooner, and they may lose privileges or be in trouble. Parents should talk with their teen about safety in ending the relationship, as a teen may be at increased risk during a break up. Courtesy photo

• Evidence of anxiety or depression. • The need to stay in constant touch with the partner. • Secrecy beyond what is normal for him/her. • Reluctance to talk about any problems in the relationship. • Defensive if perceiving their boy/ girlfriend is being criticized. • Injuries for which the explanation seems vague or doesn’t make sense.

What parents can do: • Talk openly with your teen about safe and healthy relationships. • Use opportunities like watching a TV show to talk about their choices — a good approach is to ask how other teens handle dating issues. • Talk directly, but without judgment, to your teen if you suspect abuse. When they stand in front of their formations, they can render hundreds of Soldiers silent with a single word. Today, they will face a new challenge as they try to mentor a new group — the first grade. The 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s 21st Special Troops Battalion command team took time out of their day Feb. 7 to read children’s books to students of a first-grade class at Kaiserslautern Elementary School on Vogelweh Military Complex. Lt. Col. Patricia K. Wright and Command Sgt. Maj. Brian K. Mainor, the 21st STB commander and command sergeant major, each chose books they thought would best entertain the young students and promote Black History Month. During a 30-minute session, the “Always Ready” command team amazed and entertained nearly 40 students with pictures, words and questions, said first-grade teacher Laurie Smith. “They are doing a great job entertaining and reading to the kids… this is a very important thing they are doing,” Smith said. “When our students see members of the military reading to them, it shows them that everybody reads.” Mainor, a native of Staten Island, N.Y., led the reading with the book “The First Bear in Africa,” by Satomi Ichikawa, a tale of a young boy’s teddy bear that is left behind after his family visits an African Village. As he read, he posed questions to the children about the pictures they were seeing and asked them to identify different animals described in the book. After reading, Mainor shared his thoughts on mentorship and why reading to the students was important.

Afterward, she explained that mentorship is something every Soldier should strive to do within their community. “Reading is fundamental, and I think children really enjoy having someone other than their teacher come and read to them,” Wright said. “I think that Soldiers should all try and volunteer. This is our community, and we should be involved.”

Volunteers worked for weeks to prepare gift baskets that range from small children’s baskets to extra-large gift baskets filled with candy, candles, bath items, stuffed animals, wine and beer. Don’t wait until it’s too late

Picture this: A mother takes her 4-year-old to the dentist for her child’s annual checkup. During the appointment the dentist diagnoses the child with a cavity that needs treatment and a few areas that could lead to future cavities, but do not require treatment at this time. That same day, the mother is able to schedule a return appointment. When she speaks with her husband, he is disappointed because he had a surprise trip planned for the family at the same time the child is scheduled for dental treatment. The husband divulges the surprise and since the child is not in pain, the mother makes the decision to cancel the scheduled treatment. Several months go by, and life catches up with this family. The mother seeks urgent dental care when the child starts running a fever from a problem tooth. She anxiously brings her child to sick call, and the same dentist from a year ago reviews the child’s documented treatment needs. What should have been a simple treatment now requires extensive dental care.

Tooth decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease. It is five times more common than asthma and seven times more common than hay fever. Children who lack basic dental care miss more days of school and see a general decline in health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, untreated tooth decay is progressive and can be devastating to children’s long-term health, such as with eating, speaking, playing and learning. In extenuating circumstances, untreated tooth decay can even lead to death. In 2007, a 12-year-old boy named Deamonte Driver had an abscess that resulted from tooth decay. His mother, who had a small income, searched desperately to find a dentist that would take her insurance. Deamonte’s pain was so intense that his mother ended up taking him to the emergency room. He was given antibiotics to treat sinusitis and a dental abscess then sent home. Unfortunately, Deamonte’s situation worsened, and he was rushed back to the hospital and into surgery. The young boy had a bacterial infection from the dental abscess that spread to his brain. Deamonte

A child’s first visit to the dentist should happen between the eruption of the first tooth and their first birthday. Bringing the child to the dentist at a young age is the best way to identify and treat problems. Service members from around the world converged on the KMC Feb. 3 to 7 to train international partners from Africa for Central Accord 14 Phase I. Central Accord 14 is an international training exercise coordinated by U.S. Army Africa, and Phase I acted as an opportunity to provide familiarization training to soldiers from Burundi, Cameroon and Nigeria. U.S. personnel engaged in training, and oversight of Phase I came from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s 5th Quartermaster Company, 21st Special Troops Battalion, the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, C Company Long Range Surveillance, 3rd Battalion, 108th Cavalry Regiment and the Defense Medical Readiness Training Institute. Two Soldiers from the 300th Military Intelligence Brigade also took part in Phase I as interpreters. The 173rd ABCT provided officers and NCOs to act as observers and controllers during all the training. The “Sky Soldiers” also coordinated the training schedule, ensured all training occurred on time and even provided some assistance to the translators from the Utah National Guard, said Capt. Thomas Torchia, the officer in charge of Central Accord 14 Phase I, assigned to the 173rd ABCT. “The 173rd is assisting with all phases of Central Accord 14, and for Phase I, we are here to make sure the training stays on track and to make sure our African partners are getting the training they need,” Torchia said. “This event is a valuable opportunity for these African soldiers to get this training in a small group environment.” The “First in Support” Soldiers from the 5th QM Co. coordinated sleeping arrangements for all training members, arranged transportation to all training sites and provided cold weather clothing for the African partners. The riggers were also charged with conducting training in parachute rigging and air drop operations. The 5th QM Co. conducted an air drop featuring four parachuterigged bundles for the African delegation to observe. “Anytime we get to do an air drop or airborne training with our international partners it’s a great experience,” said Spc. Edwin Schimmer, a parachute rigger assigned to the 5th QM Co. “We trained them on how to prepare a bundle

for air-drop, how to properly weig and how to properly label it. That’s fine, but I think they enjoyed the ac air-drop most. They even helped recover the bundles from the drop z after the mission was over.” The Soldiers from C Co. Polizei increases traffic controls during Fasching by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

he fifth season, Fasching is in full gear, and many Fasching parties and dances are scheduled to take place. The Westpfalz Police Headquarters in Kaiserslautern wants all motorists to make it through this time without any accidents or alcohol-related incidents. At this time of the year motorists should be aware of an increased number of traffic controls and DUI checks performed by German Polizei. According to the police headquarters in Kaiserslautern, 13 alcohol-related traffic accidents with five injured people occurred during the last seven days of Fasching in 2013 in the Westpfalz. Polizei will request a breathalyzer test if they are suspicious of a motorist’s driving ability or attitude. If the suspect refuses the test, Polizei can take the suspect to have their blood taken. The suspect has

to pay about €70 out of his or her pocket if the test comes back positive. When the blood alcohol level or the breathalyzer concentration is over the limit, the motorist’s drive ends right there. Depending on the level, consequences can be a fine, withdrawal of the driver’s license and a possible lawsuit. 10 tips from German Polizei • Plan your trip to the event and back in advance. • Be responsible; stay sober. Don’t think that one more drink is fine. • If you drank alcohol even though it wasn’t in the initial plan, make sure to give your car keys to somebody else. • Alcohol, drugs and medication influence the way you drive. • Take responsibility for others and keep them from getting behind the wheel of a car drunk. • Never enter a car with a drunk driver. • If you are the party host, tell your guests about possible police checks.

Kaiserslautern hosts half marathon March 23 by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The running division of the sports club TSG 1861 Kaiserslautern will sponsor the 33rd annual half marathon March 23 in Kaiserslautern. The 13.1-mile course is free of traffic and leads through the scenic surroundings of Kaiserslautern. “The course is fast with slight differences in height, making it suitable for all runners — beginners whose key objective is to complete the course and regular long-distance runners who like to beat their personal best time,” said Angelika Hausser, one of the sports club’s organizers. “In earlier years the run was conducted with the KMC and was called German-American Half Marathon, but after 9/11, cooperation ended. I took over the organization of the run in 2012 and started to include American participants again,” Hauser said. Start and finish area will be the Bertha-von-Suttner School (Schulzentrum Süd), Im Stadtwald, 67663 Kaiserslautern. Follow the signs reading “Stadion” and “Halbmarathon.” Start will be at 9:30 a.m. Finish will be around noon. Registrations can be made from 7:30 to 9 a.m. at the school lobby. Advance online registrations can be made by visiting www.tsg-kl.de and clicking on “Laufabteilung” and “TSG Halbmarathon.” Online registrations will end March 19. Registration fee is €10, which should be paid the morning of the event. Participants will be able to change and take showers in the school’s gym. gest starter groups. “Last year, a total of 447 runners of which more than 100 were Americans, took part in the half marathon,” Hausser said. The overall male winner ran a time of 1:12:10, the overall female winner’s time was 1:20:59. Second best male runner with a time of 1:16:07 was an American participant, Matt Albertson. Albertson, who works as a management analyst in the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Headquarters management hopes to be able to run the marathon again this year. “It is a nice and scenic route with a variety of both road and trail — some paved, some dirt — running,” he said. “I can recommend the marathon to anybody who likes to run.” This year, organizers expect a total of 350 to 400 runners. “We hope to be able to again welcome many American runners, joggers and just-for-fun athletes,” Hausser said.
