More than 660 joint families were supported during this year’s Thanks for Thanksgiving event. “For the families, it doesn’t matter what uniform we are wearing,” Holcomb said. “We are out here taking care of each other.” Additional gifts such as familyfriendly DVDs, toys, keychains and a complimentary edition of the Stars and Stripes newspaper were added in every package. Volunteers received warm food and beverages in the morning for their efforts, as well as hot dogs and refreshments later in the day. As the holiday season commences, military service members can relax a little knowing that no matter what their situation, their community is ready to provide assistance.

Ramstein’s angels keep holiday spirit alive

Wyatt Jacobs, son of Chief Master Sgt. Taylor Jacobs, 21st Operational Weather Squadron superintendent, places an Angel Tree donation into a box Nov. 8 on Ramstein. The Angel Tree program provides assistance to see Airmen through unforeseen financial difficulties.

Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Savannah L. Waters 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Air Force first sergeants throughout the KMC gathered at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center to kick off the 2016 Angel Tree ceremony Nov. 8 on Ramstein. The Angel Tree program is a First

Sergeant Council outreach initiative that provides monetary assistance to Airmen and their families. The program provides assistance to help Airmen through unforeseen financial difficulties, such as travel expenses for them or their families due to medical emergencies or even toys for their children during the holiday season. “I was an Airman once, and sometimes they might not have the

financial means to give everything they want to their children,” said Master Sgt. Timothy Bedford, 21st Operational Weather Squadron first sergeant. “There are times we have to prioritize things such as food or clothing over the little things we want but don’t necessarily need in our life. We can help our families not have to make that choice.” Sixteen Angel Trees were placed throughout the KMC, three of them at the KMCC’s entrances alone. Each tree is covered in tags with recommended donation amounts, but any donation is accepted. Last year, the Angel Tree program gave back nearly $15,000 in a single month. More than 200 families received donations, affecting more than 400 children’s lives. “Just to see the impact of being able to provide some relief to Airmen throughout the KMC is huge,” said Master Sgt. Daniel Olivares, 86th Operations Support Squadron first sergeant. “It shows the support of the United States Air Force as a whole can provide for our families.” This year’s goal is to match and hopefully exceed that amount, said Olivares.

After the Angel Tree kickoff, first sergeants handed out random gifts to Airmen around the KMCC. “We are always discussing how we can give back to the community and how we can better serve our Airmen,” Olivares said. Proceeds from the 2016 Angel Tree program will be given to families in need after Dec. 21.

Mitigating human factors in workplace Every day, Airmen get busier as they strive to improve themselves and take on new responsibilities in their careers. The increasing workload, in conjunction with manning issues and shift schedules, can lead to a loss of quality in work products and overall job performance and can create more safety violations due to human factors if they are not properly managed. “Human factors are anything that affect performance,” said Master Sgt. Maria Paucar, 86th Airlift Wing Safety office human factors consultant. “The

concern is when an Airman does something, their mental or physical state could affect the outcome of a situation. When Airmen do too many things, they may end up becoming overwhelmed.” While human factors can affect anyone and are present throughout most work places, they typically aren’t a problem unless they go unchecked. “A majority of workplace incidents involve human factors,” said Capt. Charity Bolling, 86 AW Safety office human factors consultant. “Airmen can control the factors by maintaining a sense of personal responsibility and living a healthy lifestyle.” Other than personal responsibility,

Airmen should also take some responsibility for their wingmen’s safety and health. “It’s important to monitor your peers, because they may not be aware that they are fatigued (and underperforming),” Paucar said. “The most troubling cases are those that go unrecognized for prolonged periods of time, until it is too late and an accident happens.” Another simple solution to mitigate human factors is for Airmen to have two-way communication with their supervisors. “Most supervisors ask their Airmen how their day is going but accept the typical ‘fine’ response,” Paucar said.

“Getting to know the Airman is an important step into knowing when they aren’t good to go. Airmen should also not be afraid to tell their supervisor when they may have too much going on and need assistance.” The key to preventing mishaps from human factors is knowing how to identify them. “Education and awareness of human factors is the best possible way to eliminate them,” Bolling said. “Knowing the signs of an overworked, stressedout Airman can help determine if they should take a step back for a bit. Taking care of each is how we remain safe and complete the mission.”

Team Ramstein embraces innovation

Airman 1st Class Patrick Stone, 37th Airlift Squadron loadmaster, poses in front of a C-130J Super Hercules Nov. 17 on Ramstein. Stone, along with wingman Staff Sgt. James Gaston, 37 AS loadmaster, worked together to create a new repair program within their unit, which salvages usable parts from nonfunctional headsets to create complete units. In the first iteration of their program, Gaston and Stone were able to assemble nine fully functional headsets from individual components, thus reducing the number of new headsets needing to be purchased. Together, they saved the Air Force $8,100.

Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Lane T. Plummer 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Team Ramstein is embracing its culture of innovation by putting a new way to inspect its units and Airmen into action. Continuous Process Improvement is a program focused on driving performance improvement and cost reduction through datadriven decisions. Processes are constantly evaluated and improved in light of their efficiency and effectiveness. Feedback from the process and customer are evaluated against each other and the organization’s goals. Lydia Bradley, 86th Force Support Squadron management analyst, believes Airmen are the front line of innovation. “Airmen are at the tactical level, performing the processes, and therefore they witness the problems and issues,” Bradley said. “The application of CPI principles enables Airmen to integrate continuous improvement into day-to-day operations across the full spectrum of AF operations.” The goal of Air Force

CPI is to eliminate waste while maximizing customer value. It uses several process-improvement methodologies, including lean, six sigma, theory of constraints and business process reengineering. Key principles contained in these methodologies include improving flow and reducing waste within a process, focusing on factors that degrade product quality, identifying and overcoming process constraints and redesigning processes. “Continuous process improvement is a hallmark of highly successful organizations,” Bradley said. “Wasteful, ineffective or unsafe ways of doing business cannot be tolerated. Commanders must foster a culture of innovation and challenge inefficiencies.” The program aligns its goals with Air Force Instruction 90-201, The Air Force Inspection System, which states, “Units should show a fostered culture of innovation and its members should be encouraged to challenge inefficiencies. A process for identifying and fixing deficiencies should be established and followed.” Some Airmen that exemplify this are Staff Sgt. James Gaston and Airman

1st Class Patrick Stone, 37th Airlift Squadron loadmasters. Gaston implemented a repair program that salvages usable parts from nonfunctional headsets to create complete units. Leveraging his background as a mechanic, Gaston identified the broken components in the headsets and developed a process to repair or replace the broken parts. He then spent the time to train Stone to perform headset repairs, making the repairs a continuous, transferable process improvement. In the first iteration of their program, Gaston and Stone were able to assemble nine fully functional headsets from individual components, thus reducing the number of new headsets purchased. Together, they saved the Air Force $8,100. It’s something Stone believes is inside his unit’s culture. “We always want to get the job done, and as we discover more efficient methods to do so, it proves how much we strive for excellence,” Stone said. “It may be a matter of doing something slightly different or implementing an entire new system. Regardless, we’re devoted to innovation.”

In order to continue enabling theater and strategic airpower, Ramstein has to maintain integrity in its work force. CPI is intended to help Airmen embrace their culture of innovation

by shedding waste, finding more effective ways to accomplish the mission and providing Airmen more ability to help the unit find shortcomings and strengthen key assets.

No glasses in passport photos

Since Nov. 1, customers must remove their eye glasses when taking a photo for a U.S. passport. This change in the requirement allows officials to more readily identify their customers. Photos of customers wearing eye glasses often have a glare on the lens. Glasses also create shadows on customers’ faces or block a portion of their eyes. Customers may wear glasses only in rare circumstances of medical necessity. In these cases, customers should obtain a signed statement from a medical professional or health practitioner.

Every meter reader has a company badge, which customers should ask to see. If meter readers are unable to reach customers at home, they will leave a message. Those customers are asked to read the meters themselves and report the readings to Stadtwerke as soon as possible. Customers of Stadtwerke Ramstein-Miesenbach can transfer their meter readings to the customer portal on www.stadtwerke-ramstein.de or use the form they received, fill in their customer information and drop it in the mail box next to the Stadtwerke entrance — Am Neuen Markt 8, Ramstein-Miesenbach — or fax it to 06371-592-303. Customers of Stadtwerke Kaiserslautern should email their meter readings to ablesung@swk-kl.de, visit www.swk24.de or call 0631-8001-1999. If customers don’t notify their city works, their consumption will be estimated. Officials ask customers to remove all objects in front of the meters to make the reading as easy as possible.

Harlem Globetrotters entertain service members, families Story and photos by Airman 1st Class Joshua Magbanua 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The Harlem Globetrotters treated Department of Defense members and their families to an energetic evening of entertainment Nov. 10 at the Southside Fitness Center on Ramstein. The 86th Force Support Squadron coordinated with Armed Forces Entertainment and Navy Entertainment to bring the basketball exhibition team to Ramstein. “We’re so excited to have them as our guests and to bring a little bit of home across the ocean,” said Stacey Harness, 86 FSS base-wide special events coordinator. “Some of us have seen the Globetrotters many times and for others, it’s their first time…and everyone remembers their first time seeing them!” The Globetrotters have performed for U.S. troops stationed overseas for more than 10 years, according to the group’s website. Fatima Lister, Harlem Globetrotters guard, expressed her excitement about bringing the experience to the service members at Ramstein. “We have a military tour every single year,” Lister said. “This is my first time doing the tour, and I’m really excited to just come and give back. It feels good to be able to come over here and give them a taste of home.” “It feels like they’re really appreciative of us being here,” Fatimah added. “They’re super excited and very responsive to all the jokes and all the antics that we bring. We feel like the home team wherever we go.” The team’s antics included short skits and dance segments in the middle of the game, a comic performance from Globie — the team’s mascot — and a demonstration of tricks called the magic circle.

Globie, Harlem Globetrotters mascot, gives an audience member a high-five during a performance Nov. 10 on Ramstein. The 86th Force Support Squadron, Armed Forces Entertainment and Navy Entertainment brought the Harlem Globetrotters to Ramstein in order to boost the morale of Department of Defense members and their families. The basketball exhibition team combines elements of sports, theater and comedy to produce entertaining shows for its audiences.

Amid the applause, laughter and cheering which reverberated throughout the venue, it was apparent that the spectators were entertained. The Harlem Globetrotters’ performance made heavy use of crowd participation, which is a hallmark in their games. Whether a team member jumps into the crowd or brings an audience member out to the court, the Harlem Globetrotters go through lengths to make the spectators feel like they’re a part of the show. “It’s really fun to watch the reactions on kid’s faces when the Globetrotters make crazy shots or are running through the crowd with their crazy antics,” Harness said. “It’s great to see the excitement and thrill when they’re actually part of the game.” Harness added that events like these are meant to lift the spirits of U.S. troops and their families overseas. This is why

the 86 FSS works closely with Armed Forces Entertainment to help bring the troops closer to home, she said. “The biggest reason to do these shows is to boost morale,” Harness said. “There’s nothing like bringing your favorite entertainers, musicians, comedians from the states to stir up a memory and help pump up your spirits. Any time Armed Forces Entertainment brings a show to Ramstein, 86 FSS is the point of contact.” Lister said this was her team’s way of showing appreciation to service members overseas. “They’re away from home — from the United States,” Lister said. “It feels good for us to bring a little bit of home to wherever they’re at: to give them some smiles and maybe take their minds off of anything they may be going through while abroad. It feels good for us to come back and do what

we love to do and give back that way.” Harness expresses her gratification at seeing events like the Harlem Globetrotters game come together, saying it feels rewarding seeing hard work pay off. Whether the squadron is bringing a sports team to play an exhibition game, a magician to enchant the audience or any other entertainer to bring smiles to the KMC, the 86 FSS will be there to give Ramstein’s Airmen a glimpse of home away from home, she added. “It’s worth all the work we put in to an event, if the crowd leaves happy,” Harness said. “Some of these gigs require late hours and a lot of manual labor, but when you see folks leaving and they all have big smiles on their faces, you know you did your job. I just want to thank everyone for coming out to see the show. Keep your eyes open for what’s next!”

The Harlem Globetrotters play against the World All-Stars Nov. 10 on Ramstein. The event aimed to boost morale among U.S. troops and their families stationed in the KMC.

4 ASOG Airmen honor fallen German soldiers by Senior Airman Tryphena Mayhugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Four Airmen assigned to the 4th Air Support Operations Group attended a German National Day of Mourning ceremony with the German reservist unit Reservistenverband Undenheim Nov. 13 in Undenheim, Germany. The ceremony included speeches from the city’s mayor and a religious figure, a small musical performance, and wreath laying at a memorial for fallen German soldiers. “It was a unique opportunity to celebrate the things that are common between professions of arms,” said Maj. Dan Sabatelli, 4 ASOG air mobility liaison officer. “They might be German military and speak a different language, but there’s a common bond between memorializing those who have been killed in battle and have come before us. It doesn’t matter where you’re coming from or what language you speak, you still maintain the similar traditions. It was very unique to be a part of that event.” Tech. Sgt. Amin Momna, 4 ASOG NCO in charge of operations intelligence, has had the opportunity to attend the memorial service for multiple years.

Over a decade, 4 ASOG and Reservistenverband Undenheim have developed a relationship and participate in multiple activities together.

“I always enjoy it,” Momna said. “Personally, I think it’s amazing, and it’s important we always remember to pay respects to our fellow soldiers. Regardless of history, we are all here working together.” Building a relationship with a host country’s military is a key factor in

the success of the Air Force’s mission, but it is also beneficial to foster a bond with the community. “One of the biggest reasons we’re here is partnership; we are ambassadors for the U.S.,” Momna said. “We were not only there with the reserve unit, but with the community as well.

I think it’s important for the community members to see us side-by-side with their local reservists.” Members of the 4 ASOG and Reservistenverband Undenheim have developed a relationship spanning over a decade. “This wasn’t a big faceless event in a city; this was a small town and a small unit,” Sabatelli said. “Afterwards, we all went to a local restaurant and were talking about what we do on a day-to-day basis, how things are going, and experiences we’ve had.” Over the years, the Airmen and reservists have participated in multiple activities together. “They would do ruck marches and military competitions, like shooting events, together,” Sabatelli said. “They had a reservist day where all the different military parts set up booths, and we would go out there and do the same thing. There’s a history between us and this reservist unit.” The 4 ASOG Airmen help strengthen the partnership between the Air Force and the German host nation through their continuing relationship with the members of the Reservistenverband Undenheim and the Undenheim community.

Daenner Chapel: Remote but teeming with life by Prof. Christian Fuehrer Daenner Chapel volunteer To most KMC residents, Daenner Kaserne is probably best known as a location of logistics and reserve units. In fact, the installation serves as home to a Defense Logistics Agency facility, the 405th Army Field Support Brigade, the U.S. Army Reserve’s 7th Mission Support Command and other reserve units. As reservists gather on Daenner Kaserne for training on weekends, the installation becomes a busy place, even on Sunday mornings. But there’s more to Daenner Kaserne on Sunday mornings than many KMC residents may be aware of. The installation is also home to Daenner Chapel, one of several chapels throughout the KMC and a major hub of religious activity in the USAG RheinlandPfalz. Consecrated in May of 1952, the chapel looks back on more than 64 years of history, serving generations of service members, civilians and their families in and around Kaiserslautern. As many USAREUR chapels built in the 1950s, Daenner Chapel has been designed to meet the needs of both Christian and Jewish congregations. Chapel — unlike other chapels in the KMC — is far away from major housing areas in the community, making it hard for congregations to “spread the word” that they exist and thrive in this somewhat remote location.

“It’s quite a ride from Ramstein or Landstuhl, so people really need to make a decision to come here on Sunday mornings,” said Chapel Next Senior Chaplain (Lt. Col.) R. Randall Thomas. “This is why we heavily rely on word of

ties to get computers, phones and all sorts of other comms up,” said Staff Sgt. Al Lotito, 1 CBCS radio frequency transmission systems technician. “Also, we have air-to-ground and groundto-ground communications, so we’re in charge of making sure we can talk on the ground, to planes from the ground and coordinate movements or strikes. We give that capability to our commander.” Setting up and maintaining the satellites is an important first step for the success of the mission. “If we cannot get the established wave path down, the infrastructure guys cannot give us phones,” Lotito said. “If there’s no phones or computers, the mission will fail.” For these Airmen, exercises like Healthy Thunder not only prepare them for deployments, but also for larger exercises. “We have big exercises beyond the squadron level that we participate in every so often, so getting the team working on the same page and figuring out how things go together is huge,” Bergman said. “This is very important and we plan on doing plenty of these to get everyone going.” For many of the Airmen, Healthy Thunder was their first exercise. “Personally, I hope to learn just how combat comm works,” Bergman said. “I’m relatively new to the unit, so this has been pretty vital to me and a lot of team members who are brand new as well, and this is our first look at what we do as a squadron.” Despite so many fresh Airmen in the group, the team pulled together to complete their mission. “They’re working very well,” Bergman said. “This is the first time we’ve done one of these exercises as a team, and they’re doing a good job. As with any exercise, there have been some hiccups, but they’ve handled and overcome them really well.” Setting up communications was only half the battle during this exercise. It also included a portion where the Airmen had to defend their base. “You learn things in basic training, but practicing it throughout your career is definitely going to set you up for success should you need it,” Bergman said. “This squadron goes out a lot of the time to the middle of nowhere where there isn’t an existing base, and we’re setting it up. Knowing how to protect it is very important, and that’s what we need to learn from this.” Teamwork is not only important to complete a mission, but it can help build stronger relationships between Airmen and raise morale. “This is a blast, it’s the most fun I’ve had in the squadron,” Bergman said. “The planning phase was a little bit of a beast, but once you’re actually out here and you have tents going up and people working hard, morale is the highest I’ve seen it in a while. It’s a real good time.” While on a deployment, communication is vital to success and the 1 CBCS Airmen engage in the training they need to ensure they can provide that service and keep it defended.

Airmen assigned to the 1st Combat Communications Squadron set up communications during exercise Healthy Thunder Oct. 27 on Ramstein. The squadron was broken into several teams during the exercise, each one playing its own role. The purpose of Healthy Thunder was to prepare the Airmen for a deployed situation.

TODAY:

Stuffed Veal Breast Ingredients (for 4 people)

One week in advance go to your local butcher, requesting 1-1.5 kilograms veal breast and 1-2 kilograms veal bones. 4-5 dried old pretzel rolls or pretzels ½ cup diced bacon ¼ cup chopped parsley 1 medium onion, finely diced 1 carrot cut into ½-inch pieces 1 celery stalk cut into ½-inch pieces 1 onion cut in larger pieces 2 eggs 2 cups milk 4 tablespoons oil for roasting 1 teaspoon tomato paste 1 cup red wine 2-3 cups veal broth (called Kalbsfond on the economy) String and needle to close veal breast The veal should come from the butcher with a pocket in it. If not, you can cut it with a sharp knife. Don’t cut all the way through the meat. You want an opening only on one side. Heat oven to 200 degrees Celsius. In a roasting pan, add oil and bones. Roast in oven until they have a nice brown color on all sides. For the stuffing, cut Pretzel into thin slices. Heat milk in a small pot, meanwhile let bacon simmer in a skillet. Add diced onions and let them cook until they are glassy. In a bowl, place the cut pretzels and warm milk and let sit for 10 minutes to soak up the milk. Then, add salt, pepper and a bit of nutmeg, and onions and bacon mixture. Once the mixture has cooled off, add both eggs, kneading to make a firm dough of the mixture to complete the stuffing. Stuff veal breast with pretzel mix. Close the

pocket with the binding and needle. When the bones are nicely browned, move to the sides of the pan and put the veal breast in pan for roasting on all sides until nicely brown. Then place the veal breast on top of the bones on the side. Now place the tomato paste, carrots celery and onions into the center of the pan to create the gravy. Let tomato paste get a nice brown color. Add a bit of red wine. Let it reduce. Add a second portion of red wine. Let it reduce. Add the remaining red wine and 1 cup of veal broth. Add salt and pepper. Now spread vegetables and bone evenly on the bottom of the pan. Place stuffed veal on top of bones and vegetables. Let it cook for 2.5-3 hours. Every half an hour add veal broth to the bottom of pan so that veal doesn’t burn. Take out of oven. Remove the tools used to close the opening of the veal breast. Slice into 4 pieces and place on a plate back into oven. Strain the sauce to remove vegetables. Add a bit of salt and pepper to sauce to taste. To plate, add a piece of veal breast with sauce on top. You can add roasted potatoes as a side dish or red beet salad.

Red Beet Salad

2 jars Boiled red beats, strained and cut in small slices. Keep remaining liquid 1 ½ tsp apple cider vinegar 1 ½ tablespoon vegetable oil Salt sugar and pepper to taste 1 small onion, finely diced With 3-4 tablespoons of beet juice, add vinegar, oil, salt, pepper, sugar, and diced onions. Add sliced red beets. Stir and let it sit for 2-3 hours, allowing the beets to soak up the flavor of the sauce.

Puppy buyers must be careful Courtesy of the 86th Mission Support Group

Christmas is approaching and some people might think a puppy is a nice Christmas present. Acquiring a new puppy should be a joyous event. However, it is important for buyers to be aware of unscrupulous individuals who sell puppies. Regrettably, some of these puppies become sick or even die shortly after their purchase, resulting in large veterinary bills and heartbroken buyers. Here are a few helpful hints to increase the likelihood of making the right choice when buying a puppy: • Purchase your puppy from a local source. Make sure you meet with the seller and write down the seller’s name, full address and phone number. Ask the seller for a list of references that includes previous buyers and other breeders.

• Visit the puppy two or three times before making the purchase. This will allow you to check out the facility more than once and will also let you better understand the animal’s actual temperament and health. • Insist on seeing the mother and also inspect her. • Examine both the puppy’s and the mother’s vaccination records. If the record is in a foreign language, make sure to ask a local veterinarian’s office what the vaccinations cover. Also, take notes as to the vaccination dates and the age of the animal when it was vaccinated as this will help the vet’s office verify that the animals are on an adequate vaccination schedule. • Inspect the actual pedigree. Pedigrees should have both the Verband fuer Hundewesen — VDH — and Federation Cynologique Internationale — FCI — symbols and the dogs with these pedigrees must be

Puppies should not be found under the Christmas tree unless the buyer has followed some tips as to how to make the right choice.

identified by either an individual tattoo or be microchipped. These identification numbers must appear in the pedigree as well as the numbers from the animal’s ancestors.

For further advice, consult with a veterinarian. Also, if one of the owner’s in the household is German, the puppy must be registered with German authorities.

Polizei give tips for Christmas market visits Courtesy of Police Criminal Prevention of the federal states and the federal government of Germany This is the time for families to

visit a Christmas market. It is also the right time for pickpockets doing their job. They like the crowds between vendor booths and act fast. The criminal statistics by Polizei shows a total of 168,142 cases of

pickpocketing in 2015 in Germany, which is a raise of seven percent compared to 2014 (157,069 cases). These thieves cause a damage of about €50.8 million. “Pickpockets like Christmas markets since the alleys between the booths are pretty narrow. One pickpocket is distracting the victim. A second one is stealing an item and passes it on to a third one, who is disappearing with it, in the crowd” said Gerhard Klotter, chief of the Police Criminal Prevention of the federal states and the federal government of Germany. “If they don’t get caught in the act, they are difficult to find, especially since victims don’t notice the loss until later.” Pickpockets often are professional and internationally operating perpetrators, who are active in all of Europe. They can be recognized by their searching look. They avoid direct eye contact with the victim and look more for the valuables. Pickpockets get close to people and push them. The victim gets angry, turns around and then the purse or wallet in the coatpocket is easy to reach. Another successful scam of pickpockets is to smutch the outfit of a possible victim with mustard, ketchup or another fluid, and then offer their help in cleaning it. The victim is distracted from the valuables. To be able to enjoy a stroll across the Christmas market, German Polizei are giving the following tips:

A pickpocket steals valuables while distracting his victim by spilling coffee over his clothes and then helping to clean it.

• Only take as much cash as you actually need. • Carry money, credit cards and ID cards in various closed inside pockets of your clothes, close to the body. • Carry purses with the closing side (zipper) to the body. • Watch your valuables in crowds. Be suspicious if you suddenly get pushed or two people sandwich you. • Never keep your PIN code in your wallet. • If you lose a credit or bankcard, get them locked.

Germans observe the Advent season with numerous traditions. The word Advent comes from the Latin verb “advenare which means “to arrive and indicates the coming of Christ. One tradition is the lighting of the first candle on the Advent wreath on the first of four Advent Sundays, which was Nov. 27. Every Sunday until Christmas another candle will be lit. The original Advent wreath is made of fir tree branches decorated with four candles, fir cones, ribbons and little Christmas ornaments. Today, Advent wreaths of different shapes are made of different materials and placed in homes, stores, offices, public buildings and churches. The history of the Advent wreath goes back to northern Germany in 1839, when Johann Hinrich Wichern, the founder of the Evangelist Home Mission and a juvenile home, created the first wreath made of wood and decorated with 24 candles, four big white ones for Sundays and little red ones to be lit on weekdays. Also visible in windows during this season are wooden arches with candles. They originate in the Erzgebirge mountains, where in the 17th century miners started to create these items after working in dark mines for many years. Another tradition observed by children is the Advent calendar. Starting Dec. 1, they open a door each day until Christmas Eve, when customarily German children receive their gifts. The Advent calendar was invented in 1885 by a mother in Munich, whose son Gerhard, as soon as the first candle of the Advent wreath was lit, kept asking when Santa Claus would come and bring the gifts. Gerhard Lang’s mother had to think of something to make him understand when the waiting time is over. She designed a cardboard box and drew 24 squares on it. She explained to little Gerhard that each square means getting up once and going to bed again. She even sewed a cookie onto each

square to sweeten up the waiting time. From then on, Gerhard’s mother had to design a calendar every year until she thought he was too old for it. At the turn of the century, Gerhard Lang founded, together with a partner, a lithographic art publishing company. When business wasn’t good anymore, he remembered his mother’s idea and brought the “Munich Christmas calendar onto the market in 1904. Its subtitle was “The 24 Waiting Days and it was sold for 30 pfennigs (about 15 euro cents) in stationer shops. Today, different kinds of Advent calendars are available — cardboard calendars, felt calendars with filled pockets, 24 bags hung up on a string or 24 little houses set up like a town. The baking of Christmas cookies is another tradition during Advent. There is a big variety — cookies with nuts, almonds, chocolate, marmalade, nougat, vanilla or marzipan. Traditional butter cookies are made in the shape of Christmas motifs such as stars, Christmas trees, candles, bells and snowmen. Other baked goods only offered during preChristmas time are Dresdner Stollen, a cake filled with raisins, candied lemon peel and orange peel, and gingerbread or “Lebkuchen, which is known all over the world.

Santa Claus visits children, brings goodies by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Tuesday, Germans observe “Nikolaustag, or “Santa Claus Day. Traditionally, the night of Dec. 5 children will place their boots outside their rooms to have them filled by Santa Claus with candy, cookies, nuts, oranges and little gifts during the night. The day is observed in honor of Saint Nikolaus, who was bishop of Myra, Asia Minor during the fourth century. Nikolaus was born around A.D. 270 in Patras. Two hundred years after he passed away — he died Dec. 6, 345 — he was canonized. As the patron of children, he is one of the most favored saints. Legend says he once restored to life three little boys who were killed by an evil innkeeper, cut up and preserved in barrels of vinegar. Nikolaus found them, put them together and after saying a prayer, the boys were alive again. Saint Nikolaus is also known as patron of skippers, because he was able to calm down stormy seas and save sailors’ lives. At the age of 19, his uncle, the bishop of Myra, ordained him. The new priest was then put into the monastery of Sion as abbot. When his parents died of the plague, he inherited all their property and gave it to the poor. That’s why in another legend, Nikolaus became the patron of maidens. He saved three daughters of a poor family from becoming prostitutes for not having a dowry. One

night, he secretly dropped bags of gold through their windows so the girls would be able to marry. Actually, he helped a lot of needy people by quietly giving gifts. Nowadays, besides visiting families at home, Santa Claus makes his appearance in kindergartens where he recites each child’s name out of his golden book and mentions if the child behaved well or not. The children have to sing him a song, before they receive chocolate and sweets. Some children fear him because he might bring them a rod to let them know that they didn’t behave well throughout the year. But usually the rod is hung with sweets

and is supposed to remind children of their bad behavior. The costume of Nikolaus varies from place to place. In some German regions he is dressed like a bishop with mitre and bishop’s crook and is accompanied by “Knecht Rupprecht, a shabbily dressed peasant who carries the sack of toys and treats, flourishes bundles of rods and threatens punishment to naughty children. In the Pfalz area, he appears mostly in a red robe and a peaked cap and has a long white beard. He is a friendly old man, who accepts children’s Christmas wish lists and asks children to promise to change for the better.

World-famous neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange’s life changes forever after a horrific car accident robs him of the use of his hands. When traditional medicine fails him, he is forced to look for healing, and hope, in an unlikely place — a mysterious enclave known as Kamar-Taj. He quickly learns that this is not just a center for healing but also the front line of a battle against unseen dark forces bent on destroying our reality. Before long, Strange — armed with newly acquired magical powers — is forced to choose whether to return to his life of fortune and status or leave it all behind to defend the world as the most powerful sorcerer in existence. EXPERIENCE AN AUTHENTIC SWISS FONDUE DINNER!

Have you ever driven to Switzerland just to have a fondue dinner? Only the crazy people will say, “well, yes I have.” Consider me one of the crazies! Our recent family road trip put us in the vicinity of Switzerland. And by “in the vicinity”, I mean a 6-hour road trip from Austria. Road Trip We likely could have gotten there in 4 hours, but we stopped several times to take pictures of the beautiful scenery. My family was visiting from Georgia and wanted to experience an authentic Swiss fondue dinner. Who am I to disappoint? So, Zurich was added to our list and off we went. We arranged an overnight stay at a local apartment we found on airbnb, which was just a quick tram ride from Zurich’s Old Town. Dining A google search of “best fondue in Zurich” would lead us to the restaurant Le Dezaley, which was

the number 1 fondue restaurant on Trip Advisor. I am ashamed to tell you exactly how much we paid for this dinner. As you may have heard, Switzerland in general has some high price tags. Let us just say that we ate like royalty. Zurich The city of Zurich lies at the northern end of Lake Zurich in northern Switzerland. The picturesque streets of Old Town on either side of the Limmat River reflect its pre-medieval history. We had exactly 18 hours to enjoy as much as we could see. After check-in, we immediately found the tram and headed to Old Town. Spectacular Views A 15-minute walk along the river brought us to our culinary destination. We were so hungry and focused on getting to the restaurant that we probably did not appreciate the beauty of Zurich at night, as we should have. We did manage to get a few pic-

tures and as I looked through them after our return, I was a bit disappointed that we did not spend more time just strolling along the river. Of course, after eating that much delicious fondue, we were all just ready to go to bed. So, we made plans to call it a night and wake up bright and early to take on day two. Felsenegg Cable Car Second to fondue on our request list was a cable car ride. The only cable car in Zurich is Felsenegg. It is located a little less than five miles to the south of Zurich. Due to its proximity to Zurich, it is a very popular destination. Lucky for us, we arrived early so we were practically the only guests. Felsenegg includes a restaurant located at the summit, which overlooks the valley and Lake Zurich. It seems to be a very popular hiking trail and I can imagine that it is very busy during the summer. We had one other idea for our time in Zurich a boat ride along

the Limmat River to see all of the things we missed the night before. Unfortunately, it was cold, raining and everyone was tired and we still had several hours of driving ahead of us so that particular boat ride did not happen. I know that there are many museums in Zurich as well as the beautiful Lake Zurich. I am adding this to my “summer wish list.” I really felt as if our timing was a bit off as it was a little too late for summer activities and too early for the holiday festivals. How to Get There Zurich is approximately 4 hours south of Kaiserslautern. Author’s Profile: Cheryl Koller is a native of Georgia. My wife and I are looking for an energetic, full-time babysitter or nanny to watch our 11-month old daughter. We just moved to the Kaiserslautern area - I am in the Air Force and my wife has been offered a job at Ramstein so we need someone who can start immediately. Child care would be either at our home or yours, Monday through Friday and roughly 6:30 am to 5:30 pm. We're on a waiting list for base childcare, so this job would be at least 3 to 6 months with the potential to become permanent. Pay is certainly negotiable, and we are willing to pay rates commensurate with education and certifications/experience if applicable. If you are interested please call 01523 2734453 or 01729 629804, or email us at hokiejosh08@gmail.com
