Earth Day 2012 by Amanda Mehrtens 86th Civil Engineer Squadron During the month of April, more than 1 billion people in 192 countries worldwide will commemorate “Earth Day,” including our host nation, Germany. “Earth Day” was ﬁrst celebrated in the United States more than 40 years ago. Today, environmental stewardship and understanding the importance of recycling, waste reduction and energy conservation remain critically important. This year, the Air Force will celebrate Earth Day today. In fact, the Air Force has launched a comprehensive program to reduce energy and water consumption with yearly goals while increasing installation sustainability. Meeting these goals is reliant on the behavior of each person living and working on Kaiserslautern Military Community installations and within the local area — this means YOU! In order to support this year’s Earth Day theme of “Conserve Today — Secure Tomorrow,” start with small steps, like changing your conventional light bulbs to energy saving bulbs. Continuous Improvement by Lt. Col. Matt Wehner 37th Airlift Squadron We’ve all been there before. You are the new recruit or a veteran service member who is reporting for duty at a new location. As you begin to get accustomed to the way your unit does things, at some point, be it right away or a short time later, you see a process or practice that can be done in a more effective manner. It isn’t that the flight or section is broken and leadership, whether that is the flight chief, squadron commander, the group, wing, or major command isn’t asking that anything be done — but you know that the standard operating procedure could be better. Do you at this point settle for the status quo and assimilate yourself into the current way of doing business, or do you become an agent of positive change? As you contemplate an answer, consider for

a minute the current Air Force environment. At this very moment our senior leadership is making some difficult decisions, including further force reductions. As this all unfolds, I’ve tried to pay attention to the Air Force message as we try to maintain the premier air force in the world in the face of difficult fiscal constraints. A few of the messages I’d like to expound on briefly are the need for leadership at every level of the chain of command and the need for continuous improvement. Just what does it mean to have leadership at every level of the chain of command? Does it mean you have to lead those who work for you? Most certainly and no doubt that will be beneficial, but in my opinion, it is more than that. Each Airman must lead up and down as well as across the chain of command. Take charge of your folks, yes, but back to our original example — be an agent of positive change

and take the process in your flight or section by the horns without being asked. In this manner, you are effectively leading up — as your unit benefits, and across — as your peers see you in action. We are the world’s premier air and space force. How do we stay there? In sports, how many repeat champions are out there? In business, how many companies have seen success only to be overcome by a competitor who took a product or idea to the next level? The order is a tall one for you and I today, and force reductions and budget cutbacks don’t make things any easier. Again, I go back to our original example. No matter your rank or experience level or how long you’ve been in your unit or the Air Force, by never settling for the status quo, by taking that process or practice and making it your own, by improving it, we all benefit and the U.S. Air Force maintains its esteemed position.

Motorcycle safety: My four rules to riding Safety commentary by Tech. Sgt. Raul Sauceda 86th Airlift Wing Safety Recently, some friends of mine and I were sitting around at a motorcycle rest stop in Johanniskreuz after an afternoon of riding our bikes. The majority of us being experienced riders and all of us being Motorcycle Safety Foundation Rider Coaches, we eventually began to talk about safety, new riders and mishaps. What could we do, if anything, to help prevent mishaps and protect our riders? In the end the suggestions were varied, but we finally came up with a list of four things we want to tell each rider every time they get ready to ride. The number one thing we all agreed on was “ATGATT” or “all the gear all the time.” What

does this mean? It means wearing every bit of protective gear possible, i.e. full face helmet, motorcycle gloves, riding boots, leather or textile riding jacket and pants with protective padding. I think it’s safe to say that there isn’t a military member that would go to the battle zone without their weapon and body armor. Why take your chances on the road without wearing all the gear you can? Wearing the proper gear can make the difference between spending days in the hospital having your road rash tended to by medical personnel or simply picking your bike up dusting yourself off and learning from your mistakes. The second thing we discussed was to get all the training you can. The 86th Airlift Wing offers the MSF Basic Riders course and Basic Riders Course 2 free of charge.

Third Air Force commander visits 86th Airlift Wing by Staff Sgt. Travis Edwards 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Lt. Gen. Craig A. Franklin, 3rd Air Force commander, visited the Airmen of the 86th Airlift Wing April 11 to see firsthand how they keep the base operationally ready. The visit gave Franklin and his wife Julie, the opportunity to see how the Airmen of the 86th AW work together to support the European and African theater of operations and build strong bonds with partners throughout Europe. This marked the first official visit since the general assumed command March 30. “Thanks to the 86th for hosting me today. I learned what you do for the entire mission, not only at Ramstein, but across NATO, the United States Air Forces in Europe and the joint coalition partners in the Kaiserslautern Military Community,” said Franklin. “It’s a great team and I appreciate the work of our Airmen who are mak-

There is no time to zone out, become complacent, or let your guard down. A rider should always drive defensively and always ride like the other vehicles on the road don’t see you. Lastly we came to the most personal recommendation of all, which is to tell each rider to ride responsibly and ride not just for themselves but everyone. Prior to enlisting in the military, I worked as a police officer for a city on the outskirts of Houston. In the ten years as a patrol officer, traffic investigator and patrol sergeant, I saw hundreds of accidents, some ranging from minor fender benders to multiple vehicle fatalities. No words can express how hard it is to notify a family member that their loved one has passed away. What makes these tragedies worse is that some of them could have been avoided.

The decisions you make and actions you take while riding a motorcycle not only affect you but all of those around you. Think of your family at home, your loved ones in the states, your friends and your co-workers. Motorcycle Safety Day

The 21st Theater Sustainment Command hosts a Motorcycle Safety Day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at Kapaun Air Station in Kaiserslautern. Riders can have their motorcycles inspected and their equipment and riding apparel checked before they complete a motorcycle proﬁciency course, then conduct an approximate 92-kilometer mentorship ride from Kapaun to Alsenz and returning to Kapaun. These bulbs pay for themselves in savings within one year, saving money and reducing carbon emissions produced by electrical companies each year over their 10 life expectancy. Look around your office or place of work. If you notice incandescent bulbs still in place, talk to the facility manager. The self-help store offers these to your unit for free. If you are a resident on base, you can also get these bulbs for free at your U-Fix-It store. On base, you can save at no cost if you are aware of your resources! Try unplugging your electronic devices from the wall or connecting them to a power strip with an off button instead of leaving them on standby; these items still draw power even when turned off. Washing your clothes at a lower temperature with modern detergents reduces energy use and still gets the job done. Beyond utilities, there are other ways to save. Think about all of the “stuff” we have. Where does it all come from? Where does it go when we are done with it? Imagine this: the production of a small cell phone weighing only 1/4 pound consumes 165 pounds of resources. In addition, under the shiny plastic exterior are parts that contain heavy metals which, if not disposed of correctly, can have a devastating impact to the environment. We don’t have to give up our lifestyles in order to commit to acts of green; we only need to make smarter decisions. Before we buy new items, we should first ask ourselves if we really need them or if there is a way we can reuse or refurbish something old. When you find you must buy new, are you willing to purchase products from many of the reputable companies who utilize sustainable practices whenever possible? There is a hugely popular movement toward “sustainable consumerism,” which is purchasing goods produced with the minimum amount of resource consumption. Not only does this concept apply to things like electronics, toys and textiles; sustainable consumerism can be applied to our food sources as well. Large supermarkets often provide goods that are grown thousands of miles away, sometimes in a location that requires extensive irrigation. Usually, various chemicals are applied to increase the production and shelf life of the food as it is transported long distances to a store which in turn consumes large amounts of electricity before it reaches the consumer. Conversely, the food at an organic or local farmers’ market is grown with fewer or no chemicals to be sold in the local area. Farmers’ markets provide the freshest seasonal produce which is better for our health with less environmental impact. Did you know that many nearby cities, including Kaiserslautern, hold regular farmers’ markets? During Earth Day 2012, think about all the little things you can do that will save money at home and at work, protect the environment, and help your family to focus on sustainability. Off-duty doctor comes to aid of German woman by Chuck Roberts Landstuhl Regional Medical Center Public Affairs Donald Bittner has been a doctor since 1981, but the Navy captain had never practiced medicine like he did March 26 while driving to a local restaurant with his wife. They were passing through the village of Bann when they noticed several people crowded around a man performing CPR to an elderly woman beside the road. When he approached the scene and announced he was a physician, the daughter told him the woman was her mother and had collapsed only a few minutes prior. Bittner quickly assessed the woman who was not breathing, had no pulse and had turned blue. After succeeding in opening an airway blocked by her dentures, Bittner performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and assumed control of CPR procedures with the help of the initial responder who assisted when he became fatigued from the continued effort. After about 25 minutes an ambulance arrived and they were able to assess she was in ventricular fibrillation, which is when a weakened heart flutters or quivers and is unable to pump blood. However, the defibrillator in the ambulance was inoperable to

apply the needed electrical shock to restore the heart. Bittner continued CPR until a second ambulance arrived and the defibrillator was successfully applied to initiate a heartbeat, a pulse and resume breathing on her own. The patient was taken to nearby St. Johannis Krankenhaus where the Bittners visited about an hour later and met the emergency room doctor who said the patient was in stable condition but had transferred to Westpfalz Klinikum in Kaiserslautern for further care. It was there that Dr. Bittner met with the family and received a tearful, grateful hug from the daughter. He said they were the ones he was thinking of as he performed CPR and his wife Leticia held the IV bag above. “My concern was for the family,” said Bittner. “I saw my own self in that situation, and the feeling of helplessness the family must have felt in being there. It really made me feel bad for them that they had to witness that.” Although Bittner said he has performed CPR a few times during his career, to include reviving a patient in the operating room who had gone into cardiac arrest, it was the first time while off duty. “In a hospital you have that sterile setting. When you’re outside the hospital it’s a whole different thing. It’s not sterile anymore.

You become actually involved with the family, so the whole emotional experience is completely different.” The timing of the incident, said Bittner, proved interesting. Just four days prior he completed a basic life support refresher class that included new procedures he applied on the scene. The events also happened soon before his scheduled departure from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center where he is serving a one-year rotation as deputy director for Navy Expeditionary Medical Unit 12 supporting the wartime effort in treating Wounded Warriors. “For me it was a culmination of my time here because I felt so good to be able to give something back to the German community that has been so nice to me,” said Bittner.

AF Assistance Fund comforts Airmen by Airman 1st Class Trevor Rhynes 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs

The Air Force Aide Society provides financial relief to Airmen by providing money in times of emergencies. For some Airmen, like Senior Master Sgt. Mike Keeler, superintendent of the plans and programs division, 86th Security Forces Squadron, money is requested for unexpected and adverse circumstances. “I was in San Antonio from 2003 to 2004, as an instructor at the security forces schoolhouse,” said Keeler. “My wife and I were excited to be on a controlled tour, because we wanted to start a family. “When she had our son, it was the first of September,” he said. “After three days, Connor was good enough to be brought home on the afternoon of the fourth. We had a few people over for a barbeque, and to showed our son off, everything was going well.” But that night, things changed for the Keeler family. “I was up until four in the morning, staying with my son in his room, sitting on the rocking chair where he fell asleep on my chest,” said Keeler. “I was talking to him doing the dad thing. I laid him down between four or five, then went to my room to go to sleep. “An hour and 45 minutes later my wife woke me up,” said Keeler. “I walked into his room at around six to pick him up for feeding. That’s where I found him.” Even with all of his experience as a security forces Airman, Keeler wasn’t ready for what he saw next. “He was just laying there when I walked into his room,” said Keeler. “I’ve responded to a lot of deceased calls, but it’s different when it’s your child. “I immediately started CPR but I knew in my heart, that he was gone,” he said. “My wife knew something was wrong because I screamed out ‘call 911.’” Chaos ensued, his wife and her sister were crying and screaming as the ambulance transported Connor to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. “We ended up leaving the hospital just after 2 p.m.,” said Keeler. “My wife just didn’t want to leave him. That was a very difficult time.” This is where he said his memory became hazy, because of a lack of knowing what to do. “The next day my wife and I met with the shirt who directed me to the Air Force Aide Society to figure out how to transport Connor,” he said. “I sat down with the AFAS representative, Judy, who was a huge help,” Keeler said. “She ended up planning everything from getting us tickets home, to contacting a mortuary, to making sure the airline would allow us to fly on the same plane. “She did so much for me and my wife, but in that short period of time, I never got her last name,” said Keeler. “She continued asking what I might need and even though I was never sure, she kept providing.” The help received from the AFAF has driven Keeler to take a bigger part in the yearly campaign. “Since then, I’ve always made sure I’ve been a part of the campaign whenever I had the chance to,” said Keeler. “I try to ensure that our folks know that donating money is a selfless act. It’s special how we can take pride in helping fellow Airmen.” Reaching out to as many Airmen as possible is an important task for Keeler.

“This year, I was selected as our group representative,” he said. “I ensure that my troops know how important this is, it’s a program that only helps Airmen. This covers many different situations, not just those like mine. “I know that I’ll continue donating into my retirement. That’s how important this has become to me.” Not everyone runs into someone like Judy whenever they’re going through a hard time, but there is always someone to go to. “My biggest piece of advice is seek someone out,” said Keeler. “Seek someone to talk to, for me it was Judy from the aide society, but you can go to chaplains, supervisors, or first sergeants. “Nobody will ever understand the pain you’re going through, or the thoughts in your mind,” he said. “However, they will help you turn those negative thoughts into positive ones to help you get through whatever problems you may have.” For Keeler, this story was something normally

kept between him and close friends, but he hopes sharing it will help others going through similar issues. “I had to ask my wife, if she was okay with me sharing our story at the Air Force Assitance Fund kick-off breakfast,” he said. “That was the seventh time I had told our story to anyone, previously it was just to close friends. But I know if telling my story will help at least one person, and I have someone in mind, it will ease their suffering.”

Army Reserve units participate in Unified Endeavor by Spc. Glenn M. Anderson 221st Public Affairs Detachment GRAFENWOHR, Germany — Army Reserve Soldiers with the 406th Human Resources Company, 7th Civil Support Command, based out of Kaiserslautern, along with members of the 1172nd Movement Control Team, participate in Unified Endeavour March 16 here. Unified Endeavour is a joint exercise involving more than 2,000 personnel from the Army, Air Force, and military personnel from Germany, Belgium, Canada, Spain, England and current ISAF Soldiers who were flown in from Afghanistan to participate in the event. The 406th HRC conducts realworld support for all UE participants to include registration of incoming personnel, administrative duties as well as providing supplies and sleeping quarters. “This is great training for all members of our unit,” said Sgt. 1st Class Mathew Smith, the non-commissioned officer in charge of operations for the 406th HRC. “It really doesn’t get more real than it does here especially with all the different countries participating in this event.” “In the military we train and train and then train some more, so this event will put all our training to the test and I can see where our strengths lie and where we might need to make improvements,” said Smith. As the main event of admitting participants kicked off on March 16, the building that the 406th occupied filled to capacity in a matter of minutes. “I am extremely happy that the entire unit gets to come together as a human resources company,” said

We get to finally work as a tight knit family unit.” Although there was only a limited amount of time to process incoming personnel, Soldiers of the 406th HRC remained in high spirits. “We have some very motivated and hard working Soldiers here,” said 1st Sgt. Yolanda Meekie, the first sergeant of the 406th HRC. “This is the first unit mission that all of us have been on ground at one time functioning as a team or unit, and the Soldiers are doing an amazing job.” As a bus pulled up to the staging area with more than 80 military members from different countries, the 406th HRC was ready and prepared to handle the large influx of personnel. “It’s challenging and actually something I have never done before, but I think that it is going very smoothly,” said Spc. Douglas K. Piper, a human resources specialist in charge of billeting with the 406th HRC. “We receive forecasts of what to expect, but those forecasts aren’t always correct so we always have to remain vigilant and on our toes.” “I love what I am doing here and have the opportunity to help others prepare for their mission. It gives me a real sense of camaraderie working with my peers,” said Piper. “I love the support that I receive from this unit. They have been really awesome, and the leadership is second to none.” As personnel arrived and departed the area of operation, the 406th HRC remained in good spirits and could be heard laughing and talking amongst themselves during an occasional small break between incoming units.

With Sexual Assault Awareness Month coming to a close, there are key points the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator would like the Kaiserslautern Military Community members to remember. “Sexual assault happens all too often in preventable situations. Bystanders and wingmen need to stay vigilant and think about what they would want someone else to do for them or a loved one,” said Capt. Scott A. Simoneaux, KMC SARC. “The Sexual Assault Awareness Month is to get people talking about it, and open their eyes to how serious of a problem sexual assault is.” With more than 50 reported cases of sexual assault over the past two years in the KMC area and seven cases this year already, service and family members need to realize it affects not only those directly involved but co-workers and family as well, said Simoneaux. Sexual assault awareness also ties into the four pillars of resiliency: physical, mental, social and spiritual. “Sexual assault can affect all pillars,” said Senior Airman Michelle DeMers, a victim advocate for the SARC. The physical effects may be irreversible, such as unwanted pregnancy, risk of getting a sexually transmitted disease or infection, possible sterilization or injury. Mentally, it can affect the victim’s ability to focus at work and at home. Possible post-traumatic stress can develop, which affects positive and negative behavior and the way the person performs their duties. Socially, sexual assault can change the group dynamic in and outside of the work place. The victim may find maintaining or building a healthy social life to be difficult and may end up isolating themselves, leading to confusion, turmoil and workplace hardship, said DeMers. Spiritually, it can make a person doubt what they believe and creates mistrust in the people around them. “Being sexually assaulted can have devastating results for the victim and each person will deal with it differently. There is no standard method for healing. The victim should not be judged or criticized harshly for the way they handle their situation,” said DeMers. “They need people who are there to talk and give support through the healing process.” As events continue through April, the SARC stresses that sexual assault awareness is not limited to one month. “We should be raising awareness all year and speaking up for past victims and stepping in to prevent possible future victims,” said DeMers. “The people involved may never thank you for it, but sometimes doing what’s right doesn’t need a thank you.”

21st TSC helps train multinational forces by Staff Sgt. Michael J. Taylor 21st TSC Public Affairs GRAFENWOEHR, Germany — More than 50 Soldiers from the 21st Theater Sustainment Command based out of Kaiserslautern, Germany, participated in exercise Unified Endeavor here, March 18 to April 6. The 21st TSC Soldiers assisted in providing training to multinational forces in preparation for their roles in overseas contingency operations. Unified Endeavor is a semi-annual series of exercises that was developed in 1995 as a way to train commanders with new, computer simulation technology. The exercise is a three-phase program that culminates with a simulation driven computer-aided exercise. The phases consist of academic training (how to develop a plan), development of the operations plan and execution of the operations order. UE brought more than 1,900 multinational Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, government civilians and

contractors from 27 countries together at eight different locations spanning across the globe to participate in or to support the multi-tiered command and control exercise. This year, all the major headquarter structures expected to deploy in support of overseas contingency operations took part in the training at the same time to allow the unprecedented ability to weave exercise scenarios throughout national and international leadership. The computer-based training during the exercise included hundreds of scenarios based on situations that Soldiers may face while deployed. “The training is to help them see the problems that they are going to encounter during their deployment, so they can prepare and have ideas of how they would handle those problems,” said Lt. Col. John Looney, the 21st TSC’s training and exercise chief and Atlanta native. “It is also basic staff training so that there is interaction between staff sections so that they can

understand and talk to each other and share information as opposed to all just working individually.” The primary training unit supported by the 21st TSC contingent was the 3rd Sustainment Brigade, located at Fort Stewart, Ga. During the exercise the 21st TSC acted as their higher command referred to as the Joint Sustainment Command-Afghanistan, in addition to supporting other training events with units from the ISAF Joint Command. “The 21st’s role went extremely well,” said Looney. “We conducted one train up prior to the event; we established operations and the communications team did an excellent job establishing communication.” “There were some growing pains as the exercise began but because of our preparations, everything was right on track. We had a really good team out here,” Looney added. The 21st TSC supported the event with members from all of its primary

staff sections in addition to personnel from the public affairs, surgeon and chaplain offices to name a few. “It makes me feel proud to be a part of an exercise like this,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 George Annan, a maintenance management technician for the 21st TSC and a Baltimore native. “I have been downrange before and we didn’t receive training like this.” “What we’re teaching to these guys is what they are going to be actually doing while deployed,” added Annan. “So I’m hoping that when they go downrange they will be like wow, the stuff we were taught is very helpful.” “I’m encouraged to see that we could all come together as a team and work towards a common goal to get these Soldiers ready to conduct operations in Afghanistan,” said Staff Sgt. Herschel Skinner, a support operations financial management noncommissioned officer for the 21st TSC and a Winston Salem, N.C. native.

First impressions important Commentary by Tech. Sgt Edward J. Jones Jr. 786th Civil Engineer Squadron First impressions are lasting impressions. If they weren’t, we would not worry about our appearance or how we came off to others. I can remember as a young Airman at my first duty station, my fellow wingmen never shined their boots, never pressed their uniforms and many times walked around with unserviceable items. Their excuse was, “We’re dirt boys and we’re supposed to look this way.” Over time I began to adapt this theology until I ran across a young senior Airman in my shop that had just gotten back from a deployment. His uniform was pressed so tight that it looked

like his sleeves could cut glass; his boots were shined so bright that they blinded you just to look at them. He came to work that way, changed into work clothes, and worked, then left the same way that he came in. When I asked him why he went through all of that trouble he told me, “True, we are heavy equipment operators, but we are Airmen first, we are expected to hold a standard or exceed it.” From that point on, those words played in my head and still do to this day. I started shining my boots on a daily basis and my uniform was always pressed. With that new look came a new persona. When people saw me they knew I was sharp from the first impression and my personality did the rest. I did a complete

turnaround and ended up making below-the-zone and numerous awards followed. Sometimes, when we are surrounded by people who don’t care about a standard or upholding it, you have to be the one to step up and make a stand. You may not affect the masses, but if you can affect the attitude and change at least one person’s thought process, then you have done your job. Before we were civil engineers, security forces, medical, special forces, communications, we were, and are Airmen first. Those lasting impressions that we make now will affect generations to come. So ask yourself, are you setting the example? What kind of impression are you leaving on the new generation that will one day take your place?

The 2012 Summer Hire program, which runs from June 18 through July 27, provides jobs in clerical, labor and child development positions. vice members or Department of Defense civilian employees, ages 14 to 22. Ramstein will hold the annual Community College of the Air Force graduation ceremony at 2 p.m. May 4 in the Ramstein Officers’ Club. Graduation rehearsal will be held at 9 a.m. the same day and location. Rehearsal is mandatory for all graduates participating in the ceremony. Uniform for CCAF graduates is service dress. If you are PCSing, separating, deploying or retiring prior to this date, provide the necessary information to education@ ramstein.af.mil. Members at a GSU that are located more than one hour away from Ramstein will have their diplomas forwarded to their first sergeant. Participation in this ceremony is optional, but CCAF requires diplomas to be awarded in an appropriate ceremony. KMC Job Shadow Day scheduled for April 27 It is that time of year again! Job Shadow Day is upon us and we are excited about the possibilities of “Connecting classrooms, communities and careers.” Job Shadow Day is essentially a partnership between the installation and the schools located on that installation. It is designed to give students the unique opportunity of an up-close look at various careers. Students may “shadow” workplace mentors or accompany their parents at work to experience a typical day on the job. Fortunately, the Job Shadow Day project invites students to witness ﬁrsthand how the skills learned in school relate to the work environment. Spring brings outdoor activities, health hazards by Ed Drohan ERMC Public Affairs HEIDELBERG, Germany — Spring is here and people are heading outdoors to enjoy the balmy weather. But such harmless activities as taking a walk through the woods or cleaning out the attic could put you at risk for some pretty serious medical issues if you’re not cautious. A walk in the woods exposes the hiker to ticks, which can carry both lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis, while dust stirred up from that spring cleaning job can contain dried rodent droppings that can cause hantavirus in humans. All three diseases are common to Germany and, in some areas like Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria, are prevalent, but all can be prevented with some simple precautions. Lyme disease is caused by bacteria, while tick-borne encephalitis is caused by a virus, both of which live in ticks and can be transmitted

when the tick bites a host. The earliest symptom of lyme disease is a rash that looks like a bullseye at the site of the tick bite, and can progress to ﬂu-like symptoms including muscle soreness, headache, fever and malaise. Early treatment with antibiotics can usually cure the disease, but left untreated it can cause persistent chronic problems and physical disability. Tick-borne encephalitis can affect the central nervous system and causes symptoms similar to lyme disease — headache, fatigue and muscle pain. In the event the virus does affect the central nervous system, paralysis can occur and hospitalization might be required. In the case of tick-borne diseases, the best offense is a good defense. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend minimizing areas of exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, boots and hats. Tucking in shirts, tucking pants

Avoid squeezing the tick or removing the head while removing the tick. Hantavirus is carried by rodents — the Red Bank Vole in Germany — and is usually spread through contact with their urine and excrement. In most cases, people are infected when they stir up dust in areas that are frequented by the rodents and breathe in the dried particles of those droppings. Patients infected with the strain of hantavirus common to Germany may suffer from the abrupt onset of fever

Violinist teaches, shares musical spirit at Ramstein Community Center Story and photo by Angie Kipp Ramstein Community Center Did you know that you can play or learn how to play violin for free at the Ramstein Community Center? The violin instructor, Alexandra Panchina, has toured the world as a violinist in a prestigious orchestra and has a distinguished pedigree, having trained under preeminent classical violinists. Her training began at the age of six, when she studied under Yampolski at a special musical school in Kiev. She moved to a St. Petersburg conservatory at age 14, where her tutelage was overseen by some impressive figures, including Boris Gutnikov, a virtuoso who had achieved world renown as a violinist by the time he was 30. Her teachers had also studied at the knee of Leopold Auer, a famous violin professor who left Russia for New York one year before the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917. “I was very lucky to study in the same classroom as Auer and his students,” said Panchina. After finishing her formal education, Panchina found work with a small chamber ensemble that traveled around Russia.

“We played a big repertoire – from Bach to modern music, and we played from memory without sheet music,” she said. “It was very good practice for me.” Two years later, she moved on to bigger challenges. Following the birth of her daughter, she joined the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra and began traveling the world. As her career progressed, she performed in places like Carnegie Hall, and made friends with people like Mstislav Rostropovich, who conducted the Washington Symphony and was arguably the best cellist in the world. She also began taking on students of her own. Now, Panchina lives in Kaiserslautern, teaching at a German music school and playing with the Mannheim Symphony Orchestra. As part of her passion for teaching music, she instructs the American Violin Ensemble at Ramstein. “I’m very enthusiastic about ensembles,” said Panchina. “My goal is to show children and adults how to present music, to play together and to be responsible for their own instrument.” Under Panchina’s watchful eye, the group learns to play the different pieces inherent in ensemble music.

The American Violin Ensemble is open to students of all ages and abilities and is offered free of charge every Monday evening from 6:457:45 p.m. in the multi-purpose room at the Ramstein Community Annex, Bldg. 411. Panchina, who speaks fluent English, says the most international language of all is music, and she is grateful for the opportunity to inspire others’ musical dreams at Ramstein. On April 28, Panchina and her

Reservists sponsor march to honor fallen comrades The Association of Reservists of the German Bundeswehr, Reservist Camaraderie SpiesenElversberg will sponsor its 4th Horst-Feld Memorial/ Spiesener Long Distant March May 5 in Spiesen. The march is a combination of a remembrance event for departed comrades along with a competitive but non-obligatory march and a social get-together. The Association of Reservists wants to maintain the original idea of having a march, conduct an ecumenical church service in memory of Horst Feld, in

honor of all fallen comrades and friends, and offer an 8-km distance march, with the opportunity of a stopover at a half way point for those, who would prefer a more leisurely environment. “When we planned the first Horst-Feld Memorial March in the beginning of 2009, we didn’t expect that this event would have such a positive outcome: over 120 guests accepted our invitation, and this positive achievement was topped in 2010 by 80 military as well as 60 civilian guests who attended,” said Col. In recognition of the National Drug TakeBack program, there will be an event 10 a.m. to noon April 28 at the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center. Individuals are invited to turn in their unused and expired medications for proper disposal with complete anonymity — no questions asked. Members from the Ramstein Pharmacy will be on scene to facilitate the Drug Take-Back along with several agencies from the KMC to provide information and answer questions. According to a recent article published by the FDA, proper disposal of prescription medications is important for several reasons. First and foremost, to keep medications out of the hands of children or others who might use the medications with potentially harmful effects. Secondly,

there are environmental concerns to rivers, lakes, and possibly water supply. Helping Soldiers maintain a healthy weight through nutrition by Chanel S. Weaver U.S. Army Public Health Command Public Affairs It is widely known and reported that the prevalence of obesity in the American population has been increasing over the past few years. But the Army is different, right? Soldiers are entrusted with fighting America’s wars, so they are in the best physical condition, right? Wrong. The 2008 Department of Defense Survey of Health-Related Behaviors reports that 13 percent of the Army is currently obese, according to body mass index classifications. That number is up from only 2 percent in 1995. Although, the rate of obesity in the Army is lower than the general population, the upward trend in obesity rates closely mirrors the general population. Additionally, a 2011 Army public health assessment indicates that excess body fat in the Army is associated with injury and decreased performance, which can lead to problems maintaining unit readiness. One in six Soldiers (16.4 percent) reports difficulty in meeting the Army weight and body fat standards. Even those Soldiers who are actually fit enough to deploy can face challenges in maintaining a healthy weight while serving in the deployed environment. A study by the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine and the U.S. Army Public Health Command notes that during a deployment, diverse mission requirements may prevent Soldiers from developing consistent exercise practices or participating in sports activities.

“Literature suggests that fitness decreases and fat mass increases during deployments,” said Dr. Theresa Jackson, a public health scientist at the U.S. Army Public Health Command. Obesity can lead to serious health problems if left unchecked. “In addition to heart disease, obesity can lead to breathing problems, arthritis, cancer, diabetes and ultimately, premature death,” Jackson said. One platform available to help Soldiers lose weight is the USAPHCinitiated Army Wellness Center, a program that is being set up at 38 locations across the Army in the next five years. These centers serve as community resources, providing Soldiers with lifestyle tools to improve their health and well-being. Among their standard services, these centers offer a variety of options to help Soldiers maintain healthy weight, including metabolic testing, basic weight management and nutrition education. During a health assessment at an AWC, metabolic testing is conducted to determine an individual’s base metabolic rate. This rate indicates how many calories the individual burns at rest. If the person desires weight loss or nutrition counseling, the AWC will provide basic guidance or a referral to a registered dietitian for individualized nutrition counseling. “This package includes basic weight management tips, body composition review and encouragement of ... behavior changes,” said Todd Hoover, program manager for the Army Wellness Centers Operations Program at the USAPHC. The Army also recently unveiled the Soldier Fueling Initiative, spearheaded by Initial Military Training Center

of Excellence and the Joint Culinary Center of Excellence and supported by the USAPHC. Mandated in February 2011, this initiative targets Army personnel who are attending basic combat training and advanced individual training at 10 sites in the continental U.S. The program uses color-coded labeling at these training sites to indicate the health benefit of foods and beverages. Items labeled red have low nutritional value, items that are labeled amber provide moderate nutritional content, and foods labeled with a green tag are the best options for consuming foods high in nutritional content. “The goal is to create an environment where healthy behaviors can take place,” Jackson said. Lt. Col. Sonya Cable, program manager for the SFI, said the program gives Soldiers the fuel they need to perform their duties as Soldiers. “Initial Military Training’s Soldier Fueling Initiative, a community effort, sets a training table for our new Soldier athletes while educating them on the proper fuel to achieve their specific performance goals,” Cable said. The SFI is receiving positive feedback, said Jackson, who helps evaluate and assess the effectiveness of such health promotion and public health programs for the Army. “Even the dining facility workers who prepare the foods said by learning to prepare food in a healthier fashion, they are taking home these practices to their own families,” Jackson said. “It’s not one individual program component, but a combination of factors that make this initiative effective.” Maintaining a healthy weight and eating a balanced diet is no easy task, but a proper mixture of fuels is

important for health and performance. Research shows that a balanced diet includes complex carbohydrates, lean protein and a moderate consumption of fat. “This can be easily done by consuming a variety of foods from all five food groups (dairy, fruit, vegetable, protein and grains) as close to the natural form as possible,” said Lt. Col. Sandra Keelin, a registered dietitian at the USAPHC. Keelin also said timing of meals and hydration is just as important as what you eat. Eating small, frequent meals is preferred to skipping meals or consuming large meals. With the busy schedules and multiple demands placed on Soldiers, cooking a healthy meal at home is often time-consuming. But even if fast food is a Soldier’s only option, Keelin said there are healthy choices that can be made. “Most fast food restaurants have a nutrition analysis of their menu that can be found online or on-site,” Keelin said. “Reviewing this information prior to making a selection can help guide healthier, low-calorie choices. Choose low-fat options such as baked potatoes, baked fries, fruit or a side salad. One can also choose water, low-fat milk or small juices as a healthier option over soda,” she said. As much of a bargain as it sounds, Keelin said Soldiers should avoid supersizing value meals as this generally results in overeating. While eating a balanced diet is important for Soldiers, another key to maintaining an optimal weight is engaging in regular physical activity. “Consuming lower-fat and lowercalorie diets coupled with increased physical activity is the most effective tool to curb obesity,” Jackson said.

To give your dental health a boost, here is some important information about the use of fluoride from Capt. J S. A. DeMeo, 86th Dental Squadron dentist: The dentist has likely been telling you and your family about the need to use fluoride but most people may not understand what fluoride is and how it is beneficial. Fluoride works by incorporating into the crystal structure of tooth enamel making it more resistant to demineralization and enabling it to re-

mineralize when affected by bacteria. Fluoride also inhibits bacterial acid production which decreases your chance for getting cavities. “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention named water fluoridation as one of the 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century.” Fluoride is provided to a family through multiple sources including the water supply, foods processed with fluoridated water, toothpaste, mouthwash, and supplements. It is important to know how much fluoride is in your community water supply in order to understand if your family needs any additional fluoride exposure. Although most stateside bases have fluoridated drinking water, not all installations in the KMC are currently fluoridated. The water is fluoridated on Ramstein Air Base and is kept within an acceptable range. Currently the water on Sembach and Vogelweh does not contain fluoride. 10 Tips to help prevent medical errors A recent study shows that one in seven Medicare patients in hospitals experience a medical error. But medical errors can occur anywhere in the health care system — at hospitals, clinics, pharmacies and even patients’ homes. Errors can involve prescriptions, surgery, diagnosis, equipment or lab reports. Most errors result from miscommunication. The best way you can help prevent errors is to be an active member of your health care team. That means taking part in every decision about your health care. Research shows that patients who are more involved with their care tend to get better results. Here are some tips to help us provide safer care for you:

1. Make sure all of your providers know about every medicine you are taking. 2. Bring all of your prescriptions and supplements to your medical appointments. 3. Make sure your provider knows about any allergies and adverse reactions you have had to medicines. 4. Ask for information about your prescriptions in terms you can understand. 5. When you pick up your medicine from the pharmacy, ask, “Is this the medicine that my provider prescribed?” 6. Speak up if you have questions or concerns. 7. Make sure your health care team has your important health information; do not assume everyone has all the information.

8. Know that “more” is not always better. It is a good idea to ﬁnd out why a test or treatment is needed and how it can help you. 9. If you have a test, do not assume that no news is good news. Ask how and when you will get the results. 10. Learn about your condition and treatments by asking your provider and nurse and by using other reliable sources. Garrett 18th Military Police Brigade Public Affairs There is a tradition in college basketball known as “March Madness” where teams compete in a tournament to win a championship. For the Soldiers of the 18th Military Police Brigade and the Airmen assigned to the 435th Security Forces Squadron, a similar tradition has begun. The 18th MP Bde. hosted the first Sembach Invitational Basketball Tournament March 31 on Sembach Kaserne, where six teams from Sembach, Heidelberg and Mannheim, representing the Air Force security forces, the U.S. Army Contracting Agency, Europe and the Army military police contended in a battle of the services for bragging rights and a trophy. The teams were divided into two brackets. The teams in each bracket played against each other in 20minute games. The top four teams then advanced to the semi-finals, similar to the Final Four of the NCAA tournament. During the tournament, the 529th

MP Company defeated the 435th SFS in the semi-finals, 36-18, and the brigade headquarters team defeated Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 95th MP Battalion, 43-36 to advance to the semi-finals. A motivated 529th MP Co. defeated an exhausted brigade headquarters team 53-31 for the championship. This was redemption for the 529th MP Co., after losing the flag football championship to the Air Force in the Sembach Invitational Football Tournament held in November. The tournaments have sparked a friendly rivalry between the services, and many are anticipating the next one. “It was pretty cool to do the Army versus Air Force thing,” said Staff Sgt. Bryan Meraz of the 435th SFS. “This set up a rivalry. They wanted to beat us, and we wanted to beat them.” Jeff Thomas, an operations specialist with the 18th MP Bde., arranged the tournament in an ongoing commitment to bring something to the growing community of Sembach.
