In good hands: 86th OSS ATCALS ensures safe takeoffs and landings Story and photos by Senior Airman Elizabeth Baker 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The most dangerous part of flying an aircraft is takeoff and landing. Air crews flying in and out of Ramstein are in good hands, though. No matter the weather, day and night, the 86th Operations Support Squadron Air Traffic Control and Landing Systems team ensures that when pilots need guidance on and off the flightline, the systems in place are ready. As Airman 1st Class Connor Murph, 86th OSS ATCALS radar, airfield, and weather systems technician explained, the team monitors, repairs, and maintains all air traffic landing, radio and weather systems on Ramstein. Those systems have been making sure aircraft take off and land safely for as long as Ramstein has existed. Though the ATCALS team maintains equipment, calling them maintainers isn’t exactly accurate. Electronics are a huge part of the job, yet calling them See ATCALS, Page 2

Air Force Assistance Fund campaign kicks off Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Kristof Rixmann 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The Air Force Assistance Fund campaign kicked off with breakfast at the Officer’s Club on Ramstein Air Base, March 26. The AFAF was established to provide an annual effort to raise funds for the charitable affiliates that provide support to Air Force members and their families. Total force Airmen, retirees, dependents, and surviving spouses experiencing financial hardship are target audiences for this program.

Col. Joseph Wenckus, 86th Airlift Wing vice commander, explains what sets the AFAF apart from other charitable organizations. “The AFAF is different from other charitable campaigns in that it is ‘Airmen helping Airmen,’” Wenckus said. “These affiliates epitomize the concept that our Air Force takes care of its own. Their mission is to serve our Airmen and their families. The support they provide runs the gamut from providing educational grants to covering funeral expenses. When our Airmen are out of options, the affiliates of the AFAF are the shock

absorbers that help our Airmen maximize their resilience.” The charitable affiliates supported by this campaign are the Air Force Aid Society, Air Force Village Foundation, the Air Force Enlisted Village, and the General and Mrs. Curtis E. Lemay Foundation. The Air Force Aid Society is the official charity of the U.S. Air Force and was established in 1942 as a private, non-profit organization. This organization provides worldwide emergency assistance, sponsors education assistance programs, and offers base community enhancement programs. The Air Force Village Foundation

was founded in 1964 to provide an appropriate and cost-effective retirement community for the widows of retired Air Force officers. Similarly, the Air Force Enlisted Village’s primary focus is to provide a home and financial assistance to the surviving spouses of retired Air Force personnel. No surviving spouse is refused assistance due to financial status. The Lemay Foundation helps widows of all Air Force retirees through financial grants of assistance. This financial assistance does not require the recipient to pay it back. These organizations do not solicit See AFAF, Page 5

ers is having massive positive impacts on squadrons. For the first time in a very long time, I feel like a commander. I feel I have the authority, decision flexibility and true support from my senior leaders to assess my squadron and make decisions that are not only best for the mission and the squadron, but for my people. I feel I can take calculated risks for the mission and not be constrained by “red tape.” An example of a positive impacting change has been to the Basic Instructor Course, a required course designed to give new instructors the skill necessary to provide training. Recently, training units have been delegated the authority to change this course to best suit the unit’s individual needs. Many of the space and nuclear operators and maintainers come to the 381st Training Group with years of training experience at the operational wings. Although the training squad-

of the tallest structures on base, using their extensive knowledge of the systems to conduct repairs and preventative maintenance inspections. “You have to be very careful, especially working inside some of our systems,” said Tech. Sgt. Jerel Sledge, radar, airfield, and weather systems production control noncommissioned officer in charge. “You have to make sure you’re not sticking the wrong tools in the wrong area because you could easily blow apart a circuit card or shock yourself. That means you also have to be knowledgeable about the systems as a whole. Murph explained that one of the most important things ATCALS Airmen can do is learn the theories behind the systems they maintain.

Only with that knowledge, can they figure out what’s wrong. “The most difficult part of the job is trouble shooting,” Murph said. “For example, the instrument landing systems and the tactical air navigation systems have giant cabinets full of electronics. You’re supposed to have a certain output at the end, but there’s thousands of components that come in before that, and if there’s an issue you have to find it.” Despite the challenges, Murph is at home with what he does. “I love this job, honestly,” Murph said. “I kind of fell into it. I didn’t know what it was when I got the contract. Now I’m  maintaining equipment worth millions of dollars. Every single flying operation that goes through this base uses our systems. It’s pretty cool.”

Revitalizing squadrons: A commander’s perspective

by Lt. Col. Peter Aguirre, 381st Training Support Squadron

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, CALIF.  Over the course of a 20-year career,

I have experienced some challenges at the squadron level due to decisions made by higher headquarters staff personnel that have negatively impacted squadrons or go against what a commander might think is best for their squadron. For the most part these decisions and initiatives are meant to help squadrons, but unfortunately, they don’t always hit the mark. So I was very optimistic when Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. David L. Goldfein released his first focus area on revitalizing Air Force squadrons. As a current commander serving in Air Education and Training Command and 2nd Air Force, the efforts to move authorities and decisions down to the tactical commandATCALS from Page 1 electricians isn’t right either. They work with computers and communications systems, but they aren’t information technology or communications Airmen. “This career field really doesn’t fit into a box,” Murph said. “It’s a little bit of everything. Basically the air traffic control tower controls the aircraft, but all of their equipment is our responsibility; the radios they use to communicate with the airplanes, down to the monitors that they sit in front of.” Making sure critical landing systems operate correctly is no small task. Murph said the job takes attention to detail, a huge database of knowledge, and the ability to withstand heights. ATCALS technicians climb some

The clinic offers ophthalmology eye disease management and eye surgeries to military members, dependents, retirees and qualified Department of Defense civilians.

Story and photos by Senior Airman Savannah L. Waters 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs U.S. Air Force medical squadrons around the world do their best to ensure that service members’ medical needs are taken care of, and it’s certainly no different for Landstuhl Regional Medical Center’s Ophthalmology Clinic. The ophthalmology clinic at LRMC is operated by both Airmen and Soldiers, and separated into two parts: ophthalmology and the refractive surgery clinic. The clinic offers ophthalmology eye disease management and eye surgeries to military members, dependents, retirees and qualified Department of Defense civilians. Refractive surgery is available to active duty members through the Warfighter Refractive Eye Surgery Program, which helps to reduce or eliminate the need for distance glasses.

“We offer both photorefractive keratectomies (PRK) and laser eye surgery (LASIK), and perform over 600 procedures a year,” said Maj. Ryan Molchan, 86th Medical Squadron Warfighter Refractive Eye Surgery Program chief. “By making our active duty members less dependent on spectacles, we can enhance their war fighting capabilities.” The program started in 2000, and only active-duty service members qualify for this procedure. As each service component has unique requirements, members should visit their local optometrist to learn about the process. “ B y decreasing spectacle and contact lens dependence in our fighting force, our laser center enhances operational readiness for the commands that we serve and increases mission safety for our patients,” said Staff Sgt.

“Hands down the best part of my job is helping people see better.”

Pricious Dongon, 86th MDS WRESP NCO in charge. Having both Army and Air Force physicians gives the clinic ready access to colleagues who understand the ocular conditions and impact on the respective service requirements, said Tech. Sgt. Michael Mayes, 86th MDS ophthalmology clinic NCO in charge. This teamwork helps them to amalgamate into a better performing unit with the different experience they bring to the table through training. Special categories, like flight status, have different restrictions and forms. This helps with patient’s readiness, and gives physicians the resources they need to care for a service

member of a sister service. “I’ve spent about half my career in a joint environment,” said Maj. Michael Madsen, 86th MDS ophthalmologist. “While there are some differences in how things are administered, medicine is medicine

and patients are patients, so there really isn’t too much of a difference in how we approach things clinically.” Every day, these service members work together with their sister services to provide the full-scope of comprehensive eye care to active duty members, retirees, and dependents in U.S. Air Forces in Europe, and find the instant and life-changing results of their work extremely satisfying. “Hands down the best part of my job is helping people see better,” Molchan said. “Often in medicine we manage chronic diseases, but in Ophthalmology, we can improve someone’s vision for the rest of their lives.”

Customs helps guests ‘drive on’ in Germany by Robert Szostek U.S. Army Customs Agency-Europe Public Affairs

WIESBADEN, GERMANY  One advantage of being stationed in Germany is that friends and family can visit you and travel around Europe. But you must first receive customs approval if you want to lend them your USAREUR-plated vehicle for their excursions. You don’t require the approval if any member of your household who has a USAREUR driver’s license is going to be in the vehicle while your guests drive. “Just go to your local military customs office and our customer service personnel will fill out the application

form,” said Fred Evans, chief of services, USAREUR Customs Executive Agency. If you want to have the paperwork ready before your relatives or friends arrive, you should bring along your vehicle registration and clear copies of their passports, stateside driver’s licenses and either an official German translation of their licenses or an international driver’s license. “International licenses should be issued by the American Automobile Association or National Automobile Club,” he added. For visitors from countries other than the USA, please ask your customs office if an international driver’s license or translation is required. It is also wise to ensure that your automobile insurance covers your guests.

It is also important to note that your guests cannot be residents of Germany or plan to establish residency in Germany, they cannot be your dependents and must be 18 years old or older. Your guests can use this exception to policy to drive a USAREUR-registered POV in Germany for up to 90 days within a six-month period. The 90-day period begins on the day the visitor arrives in Germany or in the European Union. The document must remain in the car when your guests use your vehicle independently, along with their passports, the vehicle registration, proof of insurance and their international driver’s licenses (or official translations of their licenses). “Driving in Germany is a tax-free

privilege for U.S. Forces personnel and their family members,” Evans explained, “which is why the customs authorization is required for guests.” He warned that this exception to policy does not allow your guests to buy gas at AAFES gas stations or use your AAFES fuel ration card. Likewise, friends or family visiting Germany who rent a car may not use AAFES gas stations or fuel ration cards. Your guests can have a great time driving around Europe if you plan ahead. Call any military customs office to find out more or consult the customs web site at www.eur.army.mil/opm/customs/POVauthorization.htm for more details on procedures and locations of customs offices.

How to be a better neighbor in Germany

by Senior Airman Elizabeth Baker 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Ralf Hechler, RamsteinMiesenbach mayor, notified the German-American Community Office of several complaints neighbors made involving U.S. military members. The U.S. military enjoys good standing in the RheinlandPfalz area, and it’s important for service members to make sure it continues. The 86th Airlift Wing and

AFAF from Page 1 through the annual combined federal campaign. “It is important to know that neither the AFAF nor any of its affiliates receive taxpayer support,” said Senior Master Sgt. Ronald Robinette, AFAF action officer. “They operate through contributions from those they directly support. One of the things that sets this charity apart from others is that 95 cents, or more, of every dollar contributed is actually spent on the AFAF mission.”

These charitable organizations rely largely on voluntary contributions, so leaders are called upon to promote awareness of this campaign while volunteers help spread the word about the difference the AFAF campaign makes. “Our efforts that start today will help those who are serving and those that have served,” Robinette said. The breakfast provided an opportunity to gain support from the wing, group, and squadron leadership as the campaign commenced. Airmen can donate to the AFAF campaign via the MyPay website.

8 1 0 2 y a D h Eart by 86th Civil Engineer Squadron “Building a sustainable society is the critical challenge of this century. Everything depends on it.” (Senator Nelson, Founder, Earth Day) The idea for a national day to focus on the environment came to Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, after witnessing the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. Inspired by the student anti-war movement, he realized that if he could infuse that energy with an emerging public consciousness about air and water pollution, it would force environmental protection onto the national political agenda. Over 20 million Americans demonstrated for a healthy, sustainable environment in massive coast-to-coast rallies. The event was so successful that in December 1970 the Congress authorized the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts. As a result, Americans began honoring Earth Day on the 22 of April every year. In 1990, Earth Day went global in 141 countries and the event continues to spread internationally, providing a powerful focal point from which people can demonstrate their commitment to being good stewards of the environment. This year, more than 1 billion people in 192 countries worldwide will commemorate “Earth Day.” Earth day goals, more than just spreading awareness! The aim for a clean environment continues with even more urgency, as the possibility of climate change becomes more apparent every day. Scientists worldwide have amassed evidence suggesting the need to take action now is more important than ever

before. As we have seen in recent and past news, larger and more frequent natural catastrophes such as floods, storms and other natural catastrophes are occurring, costing millions of lives and destroying the livelihood of even more. If we do not rethink our consumer behavior, we could steer our communities into an ecological crisis. We don’t have to give up our lifestyles in order to affect a change; we only need to make smarter decisions. Small changes in our lifestyle can make a big difference. And everyone can do them without experiencing a significant cut to their day to day business. There is a popular movement toward “sustainable consumerism” occurring in e.g. Europe and the U.S., which promotes purchasing goods that are produced with the minimum amount of resource consumed in the production of those goods. A large supermarket provides goods that are grown thousands of miles away, sometimes in a location that requires extensive irrigation; what about changing that by going to a local farmer’s market. Farmer’s markets provide minimum resources used to produce a product that provides just as much, if not more, benefit to the consumer - you. Did you know that many nearby cities, including Kaiserslautern, hold regular Farmer’s Markets? And there are even more possibilities to easily change the negative impact by doing simple things such as changing your conventional light bulbs to energy saving bulbs, such as LED (light emitting diode) or CFL (compact fluorescent lamp) bulbs. These more efficient bulbs use 80% less energy and can last 10 times longer. Imagine, just replacing 10 bulbs will pay for themselves within one year, saving you about $25 per year, and reduce 14kg of carbon emissions from being produced by electrical companies each year. Additionally, fully powering off

electronics, or even unplugging them, instead of keeping them on standby will save both energy and money, as will washing your clothes at a lower temperature to reduce hot water bills. Do you really have to use your car for short distances? Walking is healthy and your wallet will be grateful. Finally, did you know that for every degree Celsius less room temperature, you will consume about 10% less energy – again a win/ win situation for your wallet and for the environment. Earth Day 2018 Theme: End Plastic Pollution Every year Earth Day campaigners call for events with an annual altering theme. In the U.S. the 2018 Earth Day theme is “End Plastic Pollution.” Plastic pollution is killing our planet, and plastic pollution is killing us. It’s choking our oceans, poisoning our food and water supply, and wreaking havoc on the health and wellbeing of humans and wildlife worldwide. In response, Earth Day 2018 is dedicated to providing the information and inspiration needed to fundamentally change human attitude and behavior about plastics. Why should you care? Following are some shocking facts about the scope of plastic pollution to educate, inspire and mobilize your friends, family, coworkers and community to join the movement to end plastic pollution this Earth Day: We now use about 20 times more plastic than we did 50 years ago. The amount of plastic produced in a year is roughly the same as the entire weight of humanity. Virtually every piece of plastic that was ever made still exists in some shape or form (with the exception of the small amount that has been incinerated).

Nearly TWO MILLION single-use plastic bags are distributed worldwide every minute. 100 BILLION plastic bags are used by Americans every year. Tied together, they would reach around the Earth’s equator 773 times! ONE MILLION plastic bottles are bought EVERY MINUTE around the world — and that number will top half a TRILLION by 2021. Less than half of those bottles end up getting recycled. 8 MILLION TONS of plastic winds up in our oceans each year. That’s enough trash to cover every foot of coastline around the world with five full trash bags of plastic… compounding every year. There is more microplastic in the ocean than there are stars in the Milky Way. If plastic production isn’t curbed, plastic pollution will outweigh fish pound for pound by 2050.

What to consider Did you know than in Germany you have to pay a deposit for most of the plastic bottles you buy? This is usually 25 cent per bottle. Once it is empty, you can bring it back to the supermarket and get your deposit back by putting it in a bottle recycling machine. Germany started the action of plastic bottle recycling and Beverage can recycling in the year of 2003, becoming the first country to do that in Europe. The regulations stipulated that citizens need to pay 0.25 euros for each bottle’s deposit when they buy water or beverage under the volume of 1.5 liter, and only when they return the bottles can they get the deposit back. This deposit system aims to do the

Time to think about our mothe r Earth work of plastic bottle recycling in a more efficient way, by which every citizen forms the awareness and habit of recycling and environmental protection. It is said that a strong plastic bottle for mineral water can be recycled and reused for up to 30 times, which can take full advantage of it. Bottles for mineral water, beer and beverage of different brands are in the same type, including plastic bottles and glass bottles, which can make the task of recycling and reusing much easier. We’ve compiled 30 easy tips to help you go green, protect the earth, save money and make every day Earth Day. You can make a difference! • Join a local park, river or beach cleanup. • Use environmentally-friendly, nontoxic cleaning products. • Replace inefficient incandescent light bulbs with efficient CFLs or LEDs – reduce your carbon footprint by 450 pounds a year. • Car pool, ride your bike, use public transportation or drive an electric or hybrid car. Reduce your carbon footprint by 1 pound for every mile you do not drive. • Keep your tires properly inflated and get better gas mileage. Reduce your carbon footprint 20 pounds for each gallon of gas saved. • Change your car’s air filter regularly. • Stop using disposable plastics, especially single use plastics like bottles, bags and straws. • Recycle paper, plastic and glass. Reduce your garbage by 10% and your carbon footprint by 1,200 pounds a year. • Donate your old clothes and home goods instead of throwing them out. When you need something, consider buying used. • Use cloth towels instead of paper ones. Reduce garbage and save trees.

• Change your paper bills to online billing. You’ll be saving trees and the fuel it takes to deliver your bills by truck. • Read documents online instead of printing them. Go paperless, even in the office. • When you do use paper, make sure it’s 100% post-consumer recycled paper. • Set your office printer to print twosided. • Collect used printer, fax, and copier cartridges to recycle. • Bring a reusable water bottle and bring a mug to the office, to school and to the coffee shop. • Bring reusable bags when you shop. • Buy local food to reduce the distance from farm to fork. Buy straight from the farm or join a local food coop. • Compost kitchen scraps for use in your garden. Turn waste into fertilizer. • Take a shorter shower and use a water-saving shower head. • Fix leaky faucets. • Run your dishwasher only when it’s full. Save time, water and energy. • Wash your clothes in cold water and line dry. • Turn off and unplug electronics that you’re not using. This includes turning off your computer at night. • Turn off lights when you leave a room. • Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Save energy and get exercise. • Move your heater thermostat down two degrees in winter and up two degrees in the summer to reduce your carbon footprint by 2,000 pounds. • Lower the temperature on your water heater. • Contact your utility company and find out about renewable energy options. • Use energy efficient appliances.

It may seem to be a bit complicated here in Germany: so many different containers for different wastes, differences in on-base and off-base waste separation and so on. Don’t worry, there is a comprehensive recycling brochure that describes in detail what waste goes where and how the processes work. See last chapter for contact information. During Earth Day 2018, think about all the little things you can do that will save money at home and at work, protect the environment, and help your family to focus on sustainability. Earth Day’s message is about the personal responsibility we all have to “think globally and act locally,” in order to protect the planet’s finite natural resources today and for future generations.

attendees can observe the falcons flying performances, which are usually used to scare away other large birds from the flightline to ensure safety for our pilots, the falconer and his team will educate audience on the importance of their daily activities. They also talk and educate about the nature of the animals, their protection status and if you are brave enough, you get to help feeding them or will be allowed to carry them around by wearing the special falconers’ gauntlet (see picture).

How does the KMC officially celebrate Earth Day 2018? The most common practice is to plant new trees, which is also the biggest event being held on Ramstein Air Base. This year, about 45 students and teachers will participate to plant approx. 800 trees. Ramstein’s contributions towards a goal which was set during last year’s Earth Day with the theme “Trees for the Earth,” planting 7.8 billion trees – one for every person on the planet - until Earth Day 2020, which marks the 50th anniversary of the Earth Day celebration. (Tree planting event with elementary school students: Tuesday, 9-11 a.m., in the housing area on Ramstein and tree planting ceremony with 86 AW, 86 CEG Leadership and German Forest Departments: Friday, April 20, 12-1 p.m., at Bldg. 2411) Beside the tree planting events, more activities will take place that week on Ramstein. Ramstein Middle School students get to witness the base falconer and his birds of prey executing a training session. (Falconer Show for middle school students: Tuesday, 9-10 a.m.). While

Another educational event is a guided tour through the base-owned water supply plant, where most of the potable water used at RAB is treated, stored, maintained and controlled. The attendees learn about the technical equipment used to clean and protect this important natural resource. (Water Plant Tour for middle school students: Friday, April 20, 8:30 a.m.) If you have another event in mind, we are happy to support you putting it into practice, if not for this year’s Earth Day, then definitely for the next. Jordan Goslin, USAG RP ASAP intern, explained that alcohol addiction can be avoided with low-risk choices when it comes to drinking. “We want to promote responsible drinking by promoting low-risk choices,” Goslin said. “For example – pace your drinks, alternate drinks with water, eat food before and during drinking alcohol and do not drink and drive.” Goslin also explained the 0-1-2-3 guideline, which recommends: • Zero drinks for those who are underage, pregnant, at risk for alcoholism or planning on operating a vehicle • One standard drink per hour maximum • Two standard drinks per day maximum if you are a daily drinker or regular drinker • Three standard drinks maximum if you are an occasional drinker or drink only on special occasions

ASAP hosts several events throughout the month of April to provide education on alcohol and inform community members of local resources and where to turn to if they need help. ASAP will host a monthlong static demo display for unit prevention leaders and non-commissioned officers interested in providing unit training. Participants may come to the ASAP offices in Kaiserslautern (Pulaski Barracks, Bldg. 2886) and Baumholder (Clinic Kaserne, Bldg. 8743) for the displays. Staff will demonstrate how to use training tools and resources so that UPLs and NCOs may provide various training formats for their units. ASAP will host information tables from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., April 13 at Baumholder Commissary and April 18 at Vogelweh Commissary. The tables will have information on different resources available in the community and alcoholfree recipe cards. ASAP will also provide daytime hot spot tours in Kaiserslautern and Baumholder for leaders to become aware of locations where Soldiers are making high-risk choices. April 19: The first five registered participants, E-5 and above, will meet at the Kaiserslautern ASAP office at 9 a.m. where they will be taken to on-post facilities along with hot spot locations

in downtown Kaiserslautern. Pre-registration is required by April 17. April 27: Participants will join ASAP at 9 a.m. at Bldg. 8720 along with other community counterparts for a walking tour of downtown Baumholder and its hot spot locations for alcohol and drug use. Pre-registration is required by April 26. Lastly, ASAP invites the community to take part in an alcohol-free weekend, April 27-29. The alcohol-free weekend challenges community members to abstain from alcohol for three days. Garrison Commander Col. Keith E. Igyarto recommended participation in the alcoholfree weekend. “This is a great way to increase self-awareness. We can’t seek help if we’re not aware that there is an issue. If you find it difficult to abstain from drinking alcohol for three days, I encourage you to seek help from our community organizations such as ASAP. We’re here to help you and support you, and erase the stigma that comes along with asking for help,” he said. If you would like more information or if you think you may need help overcoming an alcohol addiction, call ASAP at 4931710 or 0631-3406-1710 in Kaiserslautern, 531-3141 or 0611-143-531-3141 in Baumholder.

Wolfstein, a town in Kusel County, lures visitors with a special attraction. The “Kalkbergwerk,” or lime mine, is an industrial monument and a museum of a special kind. It usually is open to the public from the end of March until the beginning of November. Town officials say that the lime mine is an impressive destination, where visitors will be able to learn a lot about former times. The underground world in the mountain demonstrates how hard people worked and what methods to win ore and lime were used. The technical cultural monument offers a ride on a pit train through winding tunnels with stone trails and bizarre rock spurs. In 90-minute-long guided tours, visitors learn how lime mining was conducted with traditional equipment. Throughout the year there is a temperature of 13 degrees Celsius (54 degrees Fahrenheit) with high humidity. Visitors are asked to wear sturdy shoes and dress accordingly. The tours are recommended for all age groups and are accessible for wheelchair users. Entrance cost is €5.50 for adults and €4.50 for youth. Family tickets cost €14.50 Opening hours are 1 to 6 p.m. Sundays and German holidays. The last ride into the mine starts at 5 p.m. Groups and school classes can register for guided tours by calling the Wolfstein Tourist Office at 06382-791-118. Every third Saturday, underground wine tastings will be offered at 6:30 p.m. Tickets cost €19.50. For groups of at least eight persons, wine tastings can be organized at other times also. Wolfstein is located in the Lauter valley, on federal street B270, north of KreimbachKaulbach and south of Lauterecken.

Timber-frame Road

Continued from March 30 and April 6

PART THREE

by Ruth Cuevas contributing writer

7. Monschau: On the westernmost edge of Germany along the Belgian

border, is the town of Monschau. Monschau is located in the District of Aachen, in the state of North Rhine Westphalia. Traversed by the river Rur and surrounded by mountains, its clean air, quiet atmosphere and abundance of nature have made Monschau an ideal location for wellness retreats. In 1996, Monschau was named a health resort town. The half-timbered buildings in the town center have remained unchanged for the last 300 years. Along the river, half-timbered houses line the landscape creating a breathtaking backdrop. Unlike the brightly colored structures in Limburg a.d. Lahn, the heavy use of slate in Monschau gives the village a monotone greyish hue. During WWII, the town was at the northern-most point in the battlefront making it a strategic location during the Battle of the Bulge. Every summer, Monschau hosts an open air classical music festival on the castle grounds and every winter, the popular Christmas market draws thousands of visitors. Monschau is located 245km north west of Kaiserslautern. http://www.monschau.de/de/

8. Rothenburg ob der Tauber: Traversing across Germany back

to the east, on a plateau above the Tauber River and in the Franconia region of Bavaria, lies Rothenburg ob der Tauber (there are two Rothenburg’s so be sure you’re heading towards the one in the district of Ansbach). While Rothenburg does not sit on the German Timber-Frame Road, it is part of the popular Romantic Road. Rothenburg dates back to the year 950. Today, it is known as one of the more complete medieval villages and draws many tourists from all over the world. In the old town are timber-framed houses but it is also known for the well preserved Gothic and Renaissance buildings. In large part, the village is stuck back in time because in 1634, the Bubonic plague killed the majority of the town’s population. The town had no money to rebuild so it remained in its original state for many hundreds of years. During WWII, Rothenburg was believed to be a near perfect example of German life so it was both occupied and protected by German soldiers. Allied forces dropped bombs on the village and succeeded in destroying a part of it before sending a small contingent of soldiers to negotiate a German surrender. Against Hitler’s orders to stay, the local German commander surrendered the town in hopes of preventing further damage. After the war, the town was quickly repaired. Rothenburg ob der Tauber is located 242 km east of Kaiserslautern (on A6). http://www.rothenburgobdertauber.org

9. Calw: Heading south-west and back towards the Fachwerkstrasse in the

state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, is the district of Calw. There are 13 subdivisions within the district. If you’re looking for the historical city center, you’ll want to follow directions towards the subdivision of Calw. The village is located about 33km west of Stuttgart, in the Northern Black Forest. The cave of Bruderhoehle, a 12 meter long cave, which can be explored without restrictions, can be found on the west slope of the Nagold Valley. The village is first mentioned in 1037, and grew as a result of expansion by the Earl of Calw. Today, the old town remains practically untouched which draws many tourists. In addition to its spectacular scenery and pristine condition, bibliophiles will be drawn to the fact that Nobel-prize-winning writer Hermann Hesse is the most prominent resident of Calw. From Kaiserslautern in the direction of Stuttgart, Calw can be reached in 177km when traveling on the A6. https://www.calw.de/welcome

10. Meersburg: The southernmost town on the Deutsche Fachwerkstrasse

is the village of Meersburg. Meersburg dates back to the year 630. Its name literally means, “Castle on the sea,” and is likely derived from its two castles and its location on Lake Constance. The Old Castle is open for visitors and the New Castle is now a museum. There are also two medieval town gates that remain from the original fortification. Meersburg is also home to vineyards known for producing rosé wines called, “Weissherbst.” Though it’s safe to say almost everyone is familiar with the term, “mesmerized,” few know that the

April 13, 2018

term originated from the 18th Century doctor, Franz Anton Mesmer, who died in 1815 in Meersburg and is buried near the upper town gate. To reach Meersburg from Kaiserslautern, follow the A81 south for approximately 363km. https://www.meersburg.de/de/Home About the author: Ruth Cuevas is a freelance writer, Adjunct Professor and Yoga instructor who has lived in six countries in three continents since 2008. Story and photo by Thomas Warner contributing writer Less than a year after Kaiserslautern High School won the boys DODEA soccer championship, head coach Enrique John has stepped down from his top post. John said he chose to “do what was best for the program at this given time” and elected three weeks ago to hand the controls to top assistants Dominic Stumpf and Lisa Rimmler. ished below third place in the DODEA large school’s classification and had put together an undefeated campaign in 2017 that ended with a 3-1 championship victory over rival Ramstein High School. Ramstein also lost a varsity leader at the start of this season when girls head coach Ricardo Buitrago resigned. The Royals had been under Buitrago’s guidance for 14 seasons and appeared in nine DODEA championship matches, winning five titles. “It’s tough not being coach after doing it for so long,” Buitrago said “It’s been one of my biggest passions to have played and been able to coach. I feel like we had a very successful program while I was there.” Volunteer assistant Ariel Crespo, a former player and coach on Buitrago’s staff, remains alongside current JV coach Katina Campbell and others as the new leadership staff for the girls’ program. Royals sweep wins over Raiders In matches played at the start of spring break, Ramstein swept four wins over their area

rivals from Kaiserslautern. The feature game between the defending DODEA champion K-Town boys and the visiting Royals was the closest of the day, with the Royals breaking a late scoreless tie when freshman striker Jaden Buelvas raced downfield in the final minutes against two defenders and struck from the right side with the game’s only marker. “Man, what a great match that was between two really good teams,” Buelvas said. “K-Town has guys that really push you to do your best but my teammates were pushing hard, too, to keep us in position. Things went back and forth out there. Good defense and hustle from my teammates … that’s what set up the goal and it helped us get the win.” The Ramstein varsity girls topped Kaiserslautern 9-1, then in junior varsity action Ramstein’s boys won 10-1 and the girls won 9-1. Both schools continue their seasons and will work toward the Europeans Championships that happen during the last week of May.

Area prep softball teams building something new Story and photos by Thomas Warner contributing writer Ramstein returns the top pitcher in all of DODEA and can hit for power while Kaiserslautern thinks it can also have a say in this season’s high school softball scenario. The rivals will play during the last week of the regular season and maybe again at the annual Europeans tournament. Both schools have multiple construction projects going on now, with new high school buildings, elementary schools, and athletic fields going up on both campuses. Ramstein and Kaiserslautern are each playing at new locations this season but coaches aren’t complaining about the progressive atmosphere that comes with new facility construction. KAISERSLAUTERN The Raiders opened the season three weeks ago, splitting wins with Spangdahlem and averaging about 20 runs a contest. Coach Jesse Costa also saw her defense give up lots of runs in the opener and said a core group of four seniors will be asked to give guidance and production if the season is to have big rewards. “The construction hasn’t bothered us and I think our practices have allowed us to get better in these first few weeks,” Costa said. “We are just really excited about our chances this

She is assisted on the 2018 Raiders staff by Jose Velasquez and Dina Swaim. Phoenix Whisennand, Victoria Jackson, Ally Alamos, and Chloe Whisennand all played key roles last season and are the veterans on this current roster. Alamos accepted a scholarship to play collegiately at Our Lady of the Lake University in Texas and got off to a fast start this year. “The regular season needs to be a time when we improve gradually,” Alamos said. “You use the regular season to get prepared for Euros. It’s a time

to get your team right … to get that focus before you hit Euros.” The seniors say Kaiserslautern will have a strong infield this year, with the Whisennand twins moving around between shortstop, third base, pitching, and catching and Alamos as the team’s top pitcher. Jackson will bring a big bat and can play effectively at third base, first, or shortstop. “I think we are going to do really well,” Phoenix Whisennand said. “We have another year where we come in with a whole lot of athletes. It’s not like we have to show off with all our pitchers. We know that we have to ‘get there’ and we have to make sure that we get the strike.” Costa described her roster as either ‘on the way out’ or ‘just coming in’ with only one junior and everyone being freshmen and sophomores. The coach previously won multiple championships at other schools including Naples and Kadena. “Our role is to help train the new players the way we were trained,” said Jackson. “There are a lot of new ones this year and you see habits they got in little leagues that we try to change. At tryouts we saw several new players who could hit so I think we are going to have a good season.” RAMSTEIN Royals senior mound ace Abby Walker said her team has a mindset that nothing that happened in the past matters to the current squad. Ramstein won the championship last season and has appeared in the DODEA championship finals

nearly every year that softball has been played in Europe. They scored 18 runs twice and swept Wiesbaden two weeks ago to start the new campaign. “Every year it’s new girls, new players … you always have to make a new team,” said Walker, the Stars and Stripes player of the year last season and one of six seniors who will play key roles for the squad this year. Ramstein was going to play at Southside Field on base but instead has moved into a new field built last year near the middle and elementary schools. A batting cage, a storage unit and other intangibles give the Royals’ program new amenities to aid the push for another title. Tom Wright and Carter Hollenbeck are dual head coaches, assisted by Kandle Baxter and other support personnel. In the past, DODEA softball has seen dominant pitching at Vilseck, Kaiserslautern, Stuttgart, and other schools. Now is the time for Ramstein to showcase the circuit’s top hurler. Walker will again try to limit the number of pitches she throws each inning and the Royals will ask

Savannah Sparrow and others for mound contributions, too. “I like to hit the ball and I played slow-pitch for several years so I got good at it,” Sparrow said. “My main position is shortstop and with slowpitch you also constantly play defense so I can do a lot to help us this season.” Madison Jarvis was set to play a role last year but was injured and had to wait. Three of the nine returnees for Ramstein are seniors, with Walker and Sparrow joined by veteran catcher Azure AgriculaMcCormick. Catching for Walker has been a blessing, Agricula-McCormick said, on both offense and defense. “Seeing what she throws certainly helps with my batting because she’s a veteran and she has taught me specific things about what other pitchers are going to throw at me and little things to look for when I’m batting,” Agricula-McCormick said. “We definitely lost some key players but having Abby as one of our returnees is really big for us. If you bat against her in practice you are going to become a better hitter.”

» Inherit the Wind: Don’t miss KMC Onstage’s production of this timeless, science vs. religion story. The accused was a slight, frightened man who had deliberately broken the law. His trial was a Roman circus. The chief gladiators were two great legal giants of the century. Like two bull elephants locked in mortal combat, they bellowed and roared imprecations and abuse. The spectators sat uneasily in the sweltering heat with murder in their hearts, barely able to restrain themselves. At stake was the freedom of every American. This play is based on the evolution trials of the 1920s, but its central theme — the pursuit of intellectual freedom — is just as relevant today as it was 100 years ago. Evening performance dates: 7 p.m. today, Saturday, April 20 and 21; and 3 p.m. Sunday matinees Sunday and April 22. Air out your house by Bret Helenius How many times has someone suggested that you “go out and get some fresh air” when you weren’t feeling great? Well there definitely is some good health advice behind that suggestion. But did you know it can also keep your house healthy...and it is required by German law? Germany’s geolocation on the European continent provides the country with an ample amount of moist humid air all year round. The climate here is even affected by the Gulf Stream as it separates with one part going to the northeast of the U.S. and the other half going to Europe. All that extra humidity through the year means it is tougher to get things to dry out. It also means certain types of mold, especifically black mold, tend to grow very

easily. It is this type of mold that can be very dangerous to your house and your health. Black mold can cause, chronic coughing and sneezing, headaches, eye irritation, nose and throat rashes and damage your metabolism. If you rent in Germany, you are obligated to air out your house or apartment every day. In some cases, your landlord can take legal action against you if there is permanent damage to your rental. Regularly opening your windows and airing out your apartment will regulate the humidity inside and should be done two to four times daily, plus after showering, cooking, or mopping the floors. Unfortunately this rule is not just for the summer time. In fact, it is extremely important to air out your abode in the wintertime even if it is cold outside.

You may have noticed households with blankets and pillows hanging out the win-

dow as well. That is someone practicing “good house hygiene.”

Your sheets can also be a source of mold and mildew if not aired out on a regular basis. Practicing this type of daily routine can save you money on expensive clean-up services later on when your mold concern becomes a mold problem. Another reason mold can build up is forced air systems are not used in Germany like they are in the states.

cally for this issue. Because air is such a vital part of keeping your house mold free, furniture is required to be placed away from the walls to avoid mold from forming. During winter months, rooms that are north facing are usually colder and should be heated. Bathroom doors should be kept closed to the rest of the house while a window is open to allow all the moisture to escape from the house.

Keep an eye out for the beginnings of mold problems in your dwelling. You may spot small occurrences of mold called “schimmel” behind couches resting against the wall. It is important to clarify that when you are airing out your house or apartment, you don’t just crack the windows open with the wonderful German window feature that is built in. You need to embrace the outdoors! Open those babies fully and get fresh! You will be doing yourself a favor.

Ingredients (for 4 people)

• • • • • • • • • •

4 pork steaks from the neck 2 eggplants 8 tablespoons oil Salt and Pepper to taste 1 can diced tomatoes ½ teaspoon sugar ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper 2 teaspoon oregano ½ cup fresh ground parmesan Basil leaves for garnish

Preparation

TODAY:

Baked Eggplant with

Pork Steak

Heat diced tomatoes in a pot. Add sugar, cayenne pepper and oregano. Simmer for 25-30 minutes. Preheat oven to 220 degrees Celsius, without convection. Wash eggplant and cut in ½-inch slices. Put oil on both sides with a small brush. Sprinkle with a dash of salt on both sides. Cover a baking sheet with foil. Place eggplant on foil and put in the middle of the oven for 15 minutes. Take out and add tomato mixture. Top with parmesan cheese and return to oven for 15 minutes more. Heat a pan with the remaining oil. Season pork steaks with salt. Roast on both sides in the pan, 5 minutes on both sides. Season them with pepper at this point. Put them in the oven to allow them to rest a bit, approximately 3-4 minutes. Put ¼ cup red wine and ¼ cup water in the pan where the steaks roasted. Stir to get all flavors out of the pan. Let it reduce a bit. Season to your own taste, perhaps a bit of cayenne pepper. You have a nice sauce to add to your meat as you plate. A nice garlic butter baguette would make a lovely finish to this meal. Love our recipes? Let us hear about it! THE DRAMATIC BURG ELTZ

Story courtesy of MilitaryInGermany.com read more at the http://militaryingermany.com/the-dramatic-burg-eltz I remember when we first moved to Germany, I found myself mesmerized by castles. I actually saw a Facebook post where someone mentioned that they had lived in Europe for over two years and they were tired of castles. What? I was seriously offended. How can you ever see too many castles?

Most Impressive Fast forward three years and I get it. However, a visit from my daughter prompted a day trip to a medieval castle nestled in the hills above the Mosel River between Koblenz and Trier. Burg Eltz is owned by a branch of the same family (the Eltz family) that lived there in the 12th century and 33 generations ago. Burg Eltz is the castle that has impressed me the most and is now my favorite castle in Germany. Even in

a region where it is almost impossible not to stumble over some castle ruins, this castle really stands out. Not many things are more associated with Europe than castles; and after visiting Burg Eltz, I have to say it’s one of the best I have ever seen. Why? Well, let me tell you why. That WOW Factor Burg Eltz sits in a lush green valley, hidden away from main road traffic. It is the first castle that has ever actually taken my breath away as we rounded a corner in the shuttle and got a look at the view. Unlike the vast majority of castles along the Mosel and Rhine Rivers, this was one of the few that has never been destroyed or badly damaged. Burg Eltz’s setting is simply stunning, as it sits perched on a rock and surrounded by thick-wooded hills and the babbling Elzbach creek on three sides. This was apparently a strategy, since the location was perfect for exacting tolls on passing traders, which provided much of the early wealth to Burg Eltz’s residents. Getting There You can reach the castle on foot by the scenic fifteen-minute walk through the woods from the parking lot or taking a much longer hike

from a nearby town. On the other hand, you can cheat like we did and take the shuttle. Either way, you will have a “wow” moment when you round the corner and see Burg Eltz lying before you.

tours include a visit to the rustic medieval kitchen and stately Knight’s Hall, where the families gathered for large feasts and conversation.

Inside the Castle Walls Once inside the castle walls, the main courtyard is a hodgepodge of design styles, reflecting the fact that three different branches of the family once resided in the structure together.

Location Burg Eltz is located in the Mosel valley and is an easy drive, although the GPS address took us a bit off course. As you get closer to the castle, you will see signs for parking.Address: Burg-EltzStrasse 1, 56294 Muenstermaifeld, Germany The castle is just under 2 hours north of Kaiserslautern.

Guided Tours All tours are guided and depart every 10 to 15 minutes in German. Guided tours in other languages, including French, Dutch, and English, are also available but depart less frequently. Even more gems are present inside the residential quarters, as all
