Sexual assault survivor: ‘You are not alone’ By Staff Sgt. Nancy Kasberg American Forces Network-Kaiserslautern
This is my story of how I was sexually assaulted. After a year at my first duty station, I volunteered for a short tour to Osan Air Base, South Korea, as an American Forces Network broadcaster. It would be a difficult tour because my husband was unable to join me, but we agreed it was a great opportunity. I quickly learned the assignment was no easy task. The days were long and work never seemed to stop. Half way through my tour, I finally made time to volunteer off-base with a fellow coworker to help members in the local community practice their English. After lunch, my coworker and I said our good-byes to the Koreans and headed back to base. A taxi dropped us off in front of the base. I paid the driver, thanked him and waved goodbye to my buddy as he left to play pool off base. Walking toward base, I noticed a button on my coat was loose, so I stopped at a tailor shop a few feet from the gate entrance. I walked in and asked if he could fix my button. He nodded and took the coat from me. When he finished, I put it on and asked how much. He kept saying no charge and proceeded to get closer to me. The next few minutes became dark. He proceeded to take advantage of me, and I just froze. I didn’t know what to do; I was in shock. I couldn’t believe what was happening. Once I snapped to, I ran as fast as I could toward base. My brain kept telling me, there’s no way this could have happened. But it did. As I sat in my room, replaying the events in my head, my husband called me via Skype. He immediately knew something was bothering me and asked what was wrong. Hesitating, I slowly began to tell him what happened that day. I could see the anger
and frustration in his eyes; he wanted so badly to hug and kiss me and tell me everything was going to be all right, but he couldn’t. The following day, I took his advice and talked to my supervisor. She asked what I wanted to do and explained my options. We walked to the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator’s office and the lieutenant there escorted me to the (Air Force) Office of Special Investigations, where they took my statement. The OSI agents were very understanding and explained that because this was a Korean national, I would have to file a

I thought it would end there, but that was only the beginning. The SARC informed me this would be a long procedure and recommended I use the Air Force’s new Special Victims Council Program to help me through the process; I agreed. A few weeks later, my first sergeant called to tell me that, according to Korean law, anytime a person files a sexual assault, both parties must present their account of the actions in front of a judge. “You will have to face him if you want to keep going with this,” he said. I echoed softly, “Face him?” This was the last thing I wanted.
He got quiet and then told me, “Hey, I don’t agree with this system. You should never have to see him again. I will support whatever decision you make, but just know our OSI translator says most women end up retracting their statements because they’re afraid of facing their assailant.” After hearing that, I knew I had to do what was right. Soon, an Air Force captain from the SVC contacted me. As a lawyer, he would help me through any legal issues and be available for support. Finally, the day arrived when I would have to face the man who assaulted me. At the Korean National Police Station, we would argue the truth over that day’s events. My first sergeant and commander drove in from Seoul to accompany me. My commander asked me how I was doing and if I was ready. But I will never forget what he told me next, “I have to tell you that I really admire what you’re doing. It takes a lot of guts, so let’s go out and (seek justice for what has happened to you).” At the police station, an officer escorted us into a room. The door opened and I saw my assailant. Next to him was an empty chair where the officer signaled me to sit. Shaking, I managed to take my seat at which time my assailant started yelling. There was no need for translation; my interpreter told me he was accusing me of lying and trying to ruin his marriage. I left the room to try and compose myself. I took a deep breath and looked in the mirror. I had been so stressed for the past two months and it reflected in my physical appearance. My skin had broken out from my face all the way down to my chest. But I knew in my heart what happened that day; I wasn’t a liar. I closed my eyes and prayed to God for strength. SOCEUR pays tribute to brother-in-arms Special Operations Command Europe Public Affairs
Special Operations Command Europe, joined by members of the local special operations community, Stuttgart military community, Hungarian special operations representatives, and the German army, gathered to remember and pay tribute to Sgt. 1st Class James M. Ginas III during a memorial ceremony at Patch Barracks April 27. Ginas, 30, who passed away April 18, was a highly decorated Special Forces Soldier remembered for his infectious smile, positive attitude and warrior spirit. “Sadly, SOCEUR will not be the same without him,” said Air Force Maj. Gen. Gregory J. Lengyel, SOCEUR commander. “Jim was the nicest guy you’d ever want to meet, but he was also a complete badass. If I were casting an actor to play an SF Soldier, Jim Ginas is the guy I would choose.” Ginas, well respected around the world, will be remembered for breaking down barriers between people and being a friend to everyone he met. “Sgt. 1st Class James Ginas was an ideal friend, a trusting brother, a loving son, a devoted father and a consummate warrior. His character was inspiring and his personality was magnetic,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Jeremiah S. Boenisch, SOCEUR director of communications. “Wherever he went there was sure to be smiling, jokes and laughter. He never shied from the tough tasks, but instead went headlong after them with dogged determination to get it done right. Tragically, his time
ultimately decided to enlist in the U.S. Army in April 2003 as a signal intelligence analyst. He completed basic combat training at Fort Jackson, S.C., and advanced individual training at Good Fellow Air Force Base, Texas, before being assigned as a signal intelligence analyst with B Company, 3rd Military Intelligence Battalion, at Camp Humphries, South Korea. After his tour in Korea, Ginas moved to Fort Campbell, Ky., where he served as a Special Operations Team Bravo signal intelligence analyst for 3rd Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group. He completed two deployments to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom before attending the Special Forces Assessment and Selection. Upon being selected for Special Forces training in June 2008, Ginas moved to Fort Bragg, N.C., to complete the Special Forces qualification course. In May 2010, Ginas graduated SF training as a communication sergeant and was selected as the Special Forces qualification course honor graduate. He was then assigned to 1st Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group in Stuttgart. As technology improved and audience-viewing habits changed, officials explained, Internet-based distribution became a more economical and

Another will be attached to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Md., and one to Brooke Army Medical Center, Texas. There will also be a WTU in Hawaii and Germany.

Stuttgart military community volunteers contributed 80,416 hours of service last year, worth exactly $1,813,380.80. This amount is based on volunteer hours recorded in the Volunteer Management Information System using $22.55 as the average value of a volunteer hour. While the estimate helps to quantify the impact of those who make a difference by selflessly dedicating their time, talents and energy, most will agree their value is immeasurable. After all, volunteers can be found in every quality of life program in the Stuttgart military community: coaching youth sports, supporting chapel programs, assisting in the schools and in Scouting programs, organizing the service birthday balls. “Stuttgart volunteering touches all areas of our community, thanks to the efforts of the many organizations that are active in our community … ,” said Col. Glenn K. Dickenson, the U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart commander, during the annual Volunteer Recognition Ceremony held April 17 at the Swabian Special Events Center. The ceremony honored all 635 registered volunteers and those who made significant contributions over the past year. About 40 percent of the volunteers, 274 to be precise, received certificates of appreciation for giving at least 50 hours of volunteer time in 2014. Dickenson and Heidi Malarchik, the USAG Stuttgart deputy to the commander, recognized those who donated more than 1,000 volunteer

Earlier in the year volunteer organizations and units nominated their “most valuable players” for Volunteers of the Year awards. Abigail Argo, Patch High School ROTC, was the sole nominee in the Youth category. Civilian nominees were Kelly Just, Child, Youth and School Services Youth Sports; Lauren Jelle, Stuttgart Community
Spouses Club; and Alexis Kelley, USAG Stuttgart Army Substance Abuse Program. James Joyce, USAG Stuttgart Retiree Support Center, and Edwin Jusino-Vega, USAG Stuttgart Central Processing Center; were the Military Retiree nominees. Nan Singh (who recently retired from the Army), Arts and Crafts Center, Kelley Barracks, was the sole Military nominee. The Spouse category nominees were Gretchen Cooper, Stuttgart Community Spouses Club; Cindy Kim, Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society; Mary Stewart, U.S. Africa Command Family Readiness Group; and Susan Tipton, American Red Cross Stuttgart. According to Lt. Col. James
Lockridge, an engineer with Special Operations Command Africa, and emcee for the ceremony, the nominations were rated by a panel of judges who considered the volunteers’ scope of responsibility, their impact on the organization or community, their accomplishments and demonstration of character. The 2014 Volunteers of the Year were: Abagail Argo, Youth; Susan Tipton, Spouse; Kelly Just, Civilian; Nan Singh, Military; and James Joyce, Military Retiree. In addition to the award, each of the Volunteers of the Year received a $50 Exchange gift card. A reception followed the ceremony and included food and live music.
On the Blotter March 21 A Military Policeman found a needle and syringe on Robinson Barracks. March 22 • A family member was observed at the Exchange placing mascara in her bag and then proceeding past the point of purchase without paying. German Polizei took her into custody. In accordance with U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart policy, her full privilege identification card was confiscated and her sponsor was advised of the suspension of privileges. • During the evening a service member and his wife became engaged in a domestic dispute in Family Housing that
turned physical and resulted in minor injuries to both parties. Military Police were dispatched to the scene and took both individuals into custody. March 27 A family member was observed in the Exchange placing tweezers, lipstick and body jewelry into a bag in her purse and then proceeding past the point of purchase without rendering payment. The incident is under investigation. April 12 In the early morning hours Military Police reported to the German Polizei station to pick up two service members. The service members were being held on suspicion of assault and resisting
apprehension. Alcohol may have played a factor in this incident. April 15 A family member reported that her dog was attacked by the dog of an unknown individual. Her dog suffered bite marks to the neck, rib cage and hip. April 16 A service member reported a dent to the hood of his vehicle while it was parked on Panzer Kaserne. April 17 The Stuttgart Golf Course reported that overnight two golf carts were damaged and that various parts of the golf course lawn were torn up. There are currently no known suspects.
April 18 A service member was observed removing property from the Exchange. Military Police notified the service member’s commanding officer and released her to the unit. Plan ahead for German and U.S. holidayS In Germany, May 1 is May Day, or Labor Day. May 14 is Ascension Day and May 25 is Whit Monday, Pentecost. May 25 also is Memorial Day in the U.S. Stores, businesses, post offices and banks on the local economy will be closed May 1, 14 and 25. Typically, restaurants, museums, beer gardens and ice cream shops will be open on federal holidays. All Community Banks in U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart will be closed on these days. In addition, several garrison offices staffed primarily with local national employees – Housing, Drivers Testing and Training Station, Privately Owned Vehicle Inspection Station, Customer Service Team Stuttgart, Installation Property Book, SATO and Central Issue Facility – will be closed on May 1, 14 and 25 for the holidays, and also May 15 because of a local national shop
agreement. The Vehicle Processing Center will be closed on May 1, 14 and 25. The Personal Property Processing Office will service customers by appointment only on May 1, 14 and 15. Connoisseurs rejoice: asparagus season in full swing By Teri Weiss Special to The Citizen
For many Germans “Spargel,” or white asparagus, literally epitomizes springtime. The harvesting and eating season, or “Spargelzeit,” begins early to mid-April and typically ends June 24, the feast day of St. John. This adheres to the old farmers’ almanac rule: “Kirschen rot, Spargel tot.” “When cherries are red, asparagus is dead.” There is some truth to this; asparagus plants must “rest” to gather strength for next year’s growth. During Spargelzeit, and for the rest of the year, Germans consume more than 70,000 tons of the elegant, pale vegetable, according to the German Agricultural Marketing Board. Cultivated by ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, asparagus has long been cherished for its delicate flavour and as one of the first vegetables of spring. Germany’s white asparagus is grown entirely submerged in earth in fields of long, plastic foil-covered rows of kneehigh sandy soil mounds that protect the slender stalks from sunlight and prevents them from photosynthesizing and turning green. The lack of exposure produces the vegetable’s subtle flavour, less robust than that of green asparagus. Asparagus is harvested just before the tips break the earth’s surface with a special knife that cuts through the soil. Remarkably rich in nutrients, but low in calories, asparagus is a very healthy food. It packs a nutritional punch since it consists of 93 percent water, 2 percent protein, 4 percent carbohydrates, and only 0.2 percent fats. About 150 calories per kilo, asparagus contains potassium, calcium, iron, phosphorus and nitrogen as well as Vitamins A, E and K. Baden-Württemberg is one of Germany’s major asparagus-growing regions and has its own scenic “Asparagus Route” that runs 136 kilometers from the asparagus-producing town of Schwetzingen via Reilingen, Karlsruhe and Rastatt to Scherzheim. In fact, the city of Schwetzingen claims to be the “Asparagus Capital of the World,” and proudly holds an annual Spargelfest, or asparagus festival, as do many other towns in “Spargelland.” Historical documents indicate that the roots of German asparagus are to be found in the area around Stuttgart, where it has been grown since 1500. Until the 19th century it was planted exclusively for the ducal and the royal Baden and Württemberg courts, earning Spargel the nickname

“Königsgemüse,” or royal vegetable. It has also been called “Elfenbein zum Essen,” edible ivory, or “Weisses Gold,” meaning white gold. Typically, German asparagus is served with melted butter and new potatoes accompanied by hollandaise sauce, ham, salmon or shrimp, or with eggs. A fine local side dish is the Swabian crepe called “Kratzete,” a “scrambled” thin pancake. This spring, wherever you are, whether at home, in a "Gasthaus" or restaurant, indulge in this regional German delicacy while the season is “on.”
asparagus has a tough, somewhat bitter peel that must be removed before cooking: Trim the lower 1/2 inch from the ends and peel each spear downward from the crown, then cook preferably standing in simmering water or vegetable broth (water, salt, sugar, lemon juice and butter). By the way, the peelings and several whole stalks simmered for a while and served with whole cream make for a tasty asparagus soup.

Preparation Methods of asparagus preparation can also range from simple to extravagant. Asparagus aficionados believe that asparagus should be cooked “the quicker the better.” There is nothing quite like a fresh bunch of plump, straight stalks with crown buds tightly closed, right out of field, garden or market stall and into boiling water. Cooked “al dente” between 10 to 15 minutes, seasoned with salt and fresh cracked black pepper, and coated lightly with melted butter. Unlike green asparagus, white

Students were introduced to many of the opportunities available to them in the world of work during a Child, Youth and School Services-sponsored Youth Career Fair April 17 at the Patch Youth Center. The annual event allows students to meet with professionals in a variety of career fields — from the military to medicine to the arts. Last year the fair was held in the Patch High School gym for PHS students. This year, however, organizer Stephen Kimbro, the workforce preparation specialist for CYS Services, said he elected to expand the audience to include middle schoolers and wanted something visual to engage the younger students. The result was a different kind of career fair, one that spilled out into the parking lot surrounding the youth center and acquainted students to some of the more interesting aspects of the professionals’ daily jobs. While the 100th Military Working Dog Detachment showcased working dogs’ skills, the U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart Fire Department allowed students to practice putting out a fire with a fire extinguisher. I looked around at all the people who came out to support me: my commander, first sergeant, station manager and OSI translator. I remained as calm as I could and answered the questions, despite my offender being a few inches away and constantly yelling at me and the interpreter. This was, by far, the hardest thing I’ve had to face in my life. After weeks, the judge decided to take my case to court. I would have to testify again, except this time no one was allowed in the courtroom with me. In the courtroom I sat in a chair that was placed in the middle of the room. No one sat in the pews and there was no jury — just a judge, an interpreter and a transcriber. They all stared as the prosecutor approached me. I was the victim, yet somehow, the room, the glares, the questions, all made me feel as if I was the offender.

Meanwhile, an employee from the MWR Automotive Skills Center demonstrated how to use an automotive scanner to test and diagnose car engines. The highlight of the fair, however, seemed to be the Naval Special Warfare Unit 2’s display. The unit brought a RIB, or rigid inflatable boat — a high speed, high buoyancy, extreme weather craft — armed with a .50-caliber machine gun and a Mark 19 semi-automatic grenade launcher.
Inside the youth center, representatives from various organizations manned displays and information tables designed to give students a feel for what a job might be like. At the U.S. Army Stuttgart Health Clinic table, students were able to perfect their suturing techniques on pigs’ legs. The optometry clinic display in-
cluded a realistic model of the human eye and an array of handheld instruments used for examining eyes. Technicians also conducted depth perception and color blindness tests on the students. Other booths included the Stuttgart Dental Clinic, Exchange, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, USAG Stuttgart Army Substance Abuse Program and USAG Stuttgart Provost Marshal Office. In all, 21 organizations participated in the event, one of many held this month as part of the USAG Stuttgart’s Month of the Military Child celebration. Kaylen Rousseau, a PHS senior who said that while he is interested in joining the U.S. Coast Guard after graduation, he still “enjoyed finding out about different career fields.” “One aspect of the CYS Services Workforce Preparation Program is to introduce youth to as many career paths as possible and to have them begin to think about their futures,” said Stephen Kimbro. “The Stuttgart community has been integral in accomplishing this task by coming out to share, show and engage with the youth in our community. Their support is greatly appreciated.”

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month Forgetting about the sun, even in Germany, may burn you in the end
Frequently Asked Questions SPF 100 sunscreen must be better than SPF 30, right? Not necessarily. The actual protection from the sun maxes out at about SPF 45. There are incremental increases in protection, but for all practical purposes, sunscreen above SPF 45 is all the same. What’s more important is applying it correctly according to the directions on the label. According to the National Cancer Institute, people very commonly don’t apply enough sunscreen. Are tanning beds safer than lying out in the sun? No. Tanning beds use the same UV rays as the sun to achieve their effect so you are still exposing yourself to excessive UV light. In Germany, with roughly the same number of sunny days per year as legendarily dreary Seattle, it may be easy to forget about the risk of skin cancer and other ailments associated with overexposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. But according to the National Cancer Institute, even indirect sunlight, over time, can increase the risk of skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States. UV radiation from the sun is the main cause of skin cancer, but it can also come from tanning booths or sunlamps. More than 3.5 million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed annually. The good news is that skin cancer can almost always be cured when it’s found and treated early. Early detection of melanoma, the most dangerous kind of skin cancer, can save your life. Make sure you check your skin once a month for changes. A new or changing mole should be evaluated by a dermatologist. Even better than early detection, however, is taking steps to reduce your
exposure to harmful UV rays in the first place. Even on completely cloudy days, 40 percent of the sun’s UV rays pass through cloud cover. This means you could be exposing yourself to UV rays and the long-term risks they create, even if you don’t feel any sunburn at all. Take simple steps today to protect your skin.
Do not burn Sunburns significantly increase one’s lifetime risk of developing skin cancer, especially for children.
Avoid sun tanning and tanning beds UV radiation from tanning beds and the sun causes skin cancer and wrinkling. Avoid tanning beds, and minimize exposure to the sun whenever possible. Stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Generously apply sunscreen Use sunscreen with Sun Protection Factor 15 or higher. Put on sunscreen every two hours and after you swim or sweat. Generously apply about one ounce of sunscreen to cover all exposed
skin 15 minutes before going outside. Sunscreen should have a SPF of at least 30 and provide broad-spectrum protection from both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. Reapply every two hours, even on cloudy days, and after swimming or sweating.
Wear protective clothing Wear protective clothing, such as a long-sleeved shirt, pants, a widebrimmed hat and sunglasses, when possible.
Seek shade Seek shade when possible, and remember that the sun’s UV rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Use extra caution near water, snow and sand Water, snow and sand reflect the damaging rays of the sun, which can increase your chance of sunburn.
Get Vitamin D safely Get Vitamin D safely through a diet that includes vitamin supplements and foods fortified with Vitamin D. Don’t seek the sun.
Why should I bother with self examinations? Detecting skin cancer early through self-examination is the best way to decrease the chance of the cancer spreading or becoming more dangerous. Skin cancer is curable in almost all cases if detected early, according to the National Cancer Institute. It’s not that sunny here in Germany — do I really need sunscreen if it’s cloudy? Yes. Studies indicate that clouds diffuse visible light at a much higher rate than they do UV radiation, which means that even on days when it is cloudy and does not seem bright to the eyes, the skin is being exposed to damaging UV rays. Even on a completely cloudy day, 40 percent of UV rays pass through the cloud cover, according to the National Institute of Cancer. This can create serious risk because people may be exposed to those UV rays for longer periods since they don’t detect any sunburn. As far as UV exposure, spending the whole day outside on a cloudy day is comparable to lying in the sun for several hours.

Known at one time as Hangar 13, a simple, aluminum-sided building sits near the entrance of what is now Stuttgart Army Airfield. To most passers-by it could be any hangar on any airfield. To those who know its history, this hangar, a nearby gravesite and a memorial just outside the airfield gate serve as solemn and stark reminders of a darker time 70 years in Germany’s past. In late 1944 and early 1945, the Allies were tightening the noose on the Nazi regime. Across Germany desperate Nazi troops were taking extreme measures to keep Hitler’s brutal war machine running. Among these was working concentration camp prisoners quite literally to death. At the unassuming Hangar 13, 600 prisoners were housed from late 1944 to early 1945, and at least 119 of them died during that time, though some reports claim many more died. The prisoners were brought to the airfield to help repair damages to the runway and other facilities from Allied bombing. In the aftermath of World War II, it was difficult for the Allies to find solid information about the disposition of those who died in concentration camps and similar facilities. At the Stuttgart airfield site, it is known that 19 dead were cremated, and a mass grave of 66 was discovered in 1945. Most recently in 2005 another mass grave, this one with 34 bodies, was discovered by workers excavating for a construction project. Investigations were conducted and the area on the airfield where the bodies were discovered was converted to
a gravesite in Jewish tradition, and the bodies of the Holocaust victims were reburied there. Now, 10 years after that grisly discovery and seven decades after World War II, it is as important as ever to remember what happened at this site and others throughout Germany, according to Rabbi Shneur Trebnik of the Israelite Religious Community of Württemberg, who attended a commemoration ceremony April 16 at the gravesite. The ceremony was marked by a prayer offered by Rabbi Netanel Wurmser, State Rabbi of the Israelite Religious Community Württemberg, and a prayer song by a traditional Jewish cantor. After the prayers and a short moment of silence, those gathered placed simple white stones upon the graves, in accordance with Jewish tradition. “We place the white stones on the graves to remember those who died,” Trebnik said. “It’s very similar to the practice of placing flowers on a grave, but in the Jewish faith we believe a gravesite should be a somber place. It should not feel comfortable here. It should be somber and remind us of the history here.” After the stones were placed, many of those gathered took a few minutes to visit the Holocaust memorial that was erected in 2010. The memorial consists of two paths, and the inscription “Wege der Erinnerung” or paths to remembrance, adorns one of two white walls. These white walls sit along one of two intersecting paths that point towards the site of the mass grave and the hangar. A sound system built into the memorial continuously plays the names of the 600 prisoners who were kept at the site between 1944 and 1945.

Kindy 500 The four kindergarten classes at Patch Elementary School celebrated their annual Kindy 500 on Friday, 24th April. Each student, with the help of their parents, created a vehicle that they could drive while visiting seven major American sites. The Patch High School Drama Class provided the props and actors for the sites. After obtaining their driver's licenses, the students visited and heard about the following sites: The Statue of Liberty, Mount Rushmore, The White House, Betsy Ross, Lewis and Clark, the bald eagle and the Liberty Bell.
