Opportunities October: It’s time to get involved!
What does it mean to be a commuter adult student? It means that you probably have a full or part time job, take care of a family and handle other responsibilities all while being dedicated to attending classes. But, all of the juggling of time and activities can create a rift between a commuter student and the university. So, why is it important for a busy student to get involved with campus organizations or activities? Jon Campbell, Coordinator of Leadership Programs, says, “We all have a need to continually grow and expand our world view. The leadership programs at Memphis provide opportunities for networking and creating connections that can help you get that ideal job or promotion one day.” The lunch with a leader series gets students connected with local leaders while discussing issues and eating lunch. The lectures cover topics that provide “real life perspectives and open-ended discussions” about leadership and professions. All University of Memphis students are invited to participate. The next series is November 8th with Stephen C. Reynolds, President of Baptist Memorial hospital. Box lunches will be provided on a first come first serve basis. If you are already active in a student
organization, the Tiger Leadership Summit will offer students the chance to network with other student leaders, learn methods for improving as a leader, and generate ideas for creating ideal Student Organizations at Memphis. The leadership summit is on November 17th and the Office of Student Leadership and Involvement is currently accepting applications. “Our office is here to provide a connection to students and the campus,” said Campbell. “We also offer information about internships, community service and volunteer opportunities and leadership scholarships.” Other offices on campus offer career development opportunities to students. Career Encounters is a job shadowing program offered by the Center for Counseling, Learning and Testing. Students can explore the future career they want while shadowing a local business leader. It offers unique insights and gives students the chance to ask successful leaders about their careers. Getting involved on with the university can help develop students for leadership the same way that classes prepare them for a career.
