The definition of ‘green’ alternatives gets a little more concrete BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS It’s not your grandparents’ pervious surface. Brett Pomerleau of Andover and Twin Cities area residents have created a new pervious concrete-like material called Percoa. Percoa, also the name of the company, manufactures and installs the product, a patent-pending porous concrete mixture that serves as a green alternative to parking lots, driveways, roadways and other hard surfaces. Percoa is built to drain and filter stormwater runoff of pollutants before it reaches rivers, lakes and other water systems. The company formed in 2010, Pomerleau said, but they just finished their business plan in January. “We started evangelizing, and it just started taking off,” Pomerleau said. He said they’ve talked with Eden Prairie officials, Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak and U.S. Congressman Erik Paulsen. They have even been flown to Florida and caught the interest of contractors who work with one of Pomerleau’s family members. He’s confident some manufacturing and project deals could come GREEN: TO PAGE 25

For his younger sister, Matt Bushland, right, guides Colton Simmer on a blindfolded walk on a rainy Saturday, May 21, at Round Lake Park during a fundraising walk-a-thon, “From Darkness to Light: Mary Rose’s Walk.” Bushland was among 25 volunteers who were scheduled to help 50 participants. The guides helped participants around the lake and talked about Leber’s Congenital Amaurosis, a genetic blindness that afflicts children and newborns. See page 20 for more photos from the event.
