The definition of ‘green’ alternatives gets a little more concrete

BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS It’s not your grandparents’ pervious surface.

Brett Pomerleau of Andover and Twin Cities area residents have created a new pervious concrete-like material called Percoa.

Percoa, also the name of the company, manufactures and installs the product, a patent-pending porous concrete mixture that serves as a green alternative to parking lots, driveways, roadways and other hard surfaces.

Percoa is built to drain and filter stormwater runoff of pollutants before it reaches rivers, lakes and other water systems.

The company formed in 2010, Pomerleau said, but they just finished their business plan in January.

“We started evangelizing, and it just started taking off,” Pomerleau said.

He said they’ve talked with Eden Prairie officials, Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak and U.S. Congressman Erik Paulsen.

They have even been flown to Florida and caught the interest of contractors who work with one of Pomerleau’s family members. He’s confident some manufacturing and project deals could come GREEN: TO PAGE 25

Off EP streets after 30 years

BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS After 30 years as the public works director for the city of Eden Prairie and 40 years in the industry, Gene Dietz is retiring.

His jobs and roles have grown with the city’s population and development over the past 30 years, and having a chance to be apart of all the infrastructure developments that come with a fast-growing Dietz city have been a privilege, he said.

That’s why he wouldn’t call his retirement a relief, he said.

“Relief wouldn’t be the way to say it, because this has been – I like telling people I have one of the 10 best jobs in the state of Minnesota. … For a civil engineer, Eden Prairie has been, without a doubt, one of the best places to work in.”

Part of that city development includes an efficient, experienced staff with a “participatory form of management.”

“The experience for Eden Prairie is not walking out the door next week,” Dietz said. “It’s just one part of it, and there’s some very good people left behind.”

So, before he walks out that door Friday, May 27, Dietz shared a unique water tower story, shared some wisdom for residents and talked about one of the bigger infrastructure challenges the city will face.

SC: Whenever a project comes up or an idea comes up, it seems like you have a good story or some kind of background on something that’s happened.

Is there one memorable incident in Eden Prairie?

GD: Well, I think something that will always be memorable was in like 1993 or ’94. If you were in my office, you would see that I have a direct line of sight from my office window to the water tower on Single Tree Lane. And, during construction … they were getting ready to make the last pour of the concrete, and they had been having trouble with the liner sticking to the concrete after they were done, so they juiced it down really well with form oil. It’s just like thin motor oil kind of stuff.

Then, because they were going to make some penetrations through the wall, someone got a good idea that, well, instead of working on this with a hacksaw, lets use a cutting torch and cut out some of the reinforcement steel of this whole thing.

Who’s scared of an audit?

BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS The idea of getting audited sometimes gets muttered as if it were an urban legend that could actually come true.

So, imagine getting one every year.

That could be a screamer.

Minnesota cites do. It’s state law, in fact.

The good news is, cities are usually a little more prepared and well equipped to handle such a comprehensive report.

And from some good, on-going book keeping from the finance staff working at the city of Eden Prairie, 2010 brought a report worthy of a large magnet on city’s proverbial refrigerator.

For a $37-million general fund budget, “You’re within one half of 1 percent where you budgeted, and that’s superb. … You really can’t get any closer than that,” Steven Wischmann of Kern, Dewenter, Viere, Ltd told the Eden Prairie City Council during a workshop May 17. KDV, an independent auditing firm, helped city staff members prepare the report.

For its overall finances, given the eco-

nomic conditions in the last few years, the city is doing great with the resources it has, Wischmann said.

“Excellent report, excellent financial condition,” he said.

Of the remaining assets, $9 million is restricted and $56 million could be used to meet ongoing obligations to citizens and creditors, according to the audit report.

Another statement posted, lawsuit question remains

BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS Looking to halt K-6 elementary school and boundary changes this coming fall, a group of anonymous Eden Prairie community members have said they are looking to file a lawsuit against the Eden Prairie School District.

In a statement posted on its website Thursday, May 19, the group Yes for Neighborhood Schools said it is looking to strike a deal with a law firm that would represent them pro-bono, and if successful, they could be paid back through a school district insurance policy. That’s how the statement described the financial arrangement of a 2007 Supreme Court case involving the Seattle School District.

If and when such a deal is made, they would look to move forward with a judicial review within 10 days, according to a second statement posted last Thursday.

Support grads with alcohol-free parties

BY HEATHER HAEN ANDERSON • CONNECTING WITH KIDS EDINA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Graduation from high school and a party to celebrate it are rites of passage for many teens.

Like thousands of other Minnesota parents, I have a senior in high school who will graduate in just a few short weeks. And like thousands of other graduates, my daughter would like a party to celebrate her achievement. No longer a child, she is eager to start college in the fall and join the ranks of other adults.

Planning her graduation party has been a lot of fun, but there are decisions to be made. Should we highlight her life in high school or emphasize her college plans?

Who should be on the guest list? What time of day? What food should we serve?

Our easiest decision was to celebrate without alcohol – even for our guests of legal drinking age. We want to provide a safe place for our daughter and her friends while communicating our expectations

that underage drinking is not acceptable.

Besides the fact that it is against the law to serve alcohol to people under the age of 21, there are many other reasons we chose to host an alcohol-free party. First and foremost is our concern for the safety and wellbeing of all our guests.

According to Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), alcohol use by teens affects their cognitive functioning and impairs their learning and memory.

Teens, like all of us, make poor decisions while under the influence. When teens consume alcohol they are more likely to commit or be the victim of a crime. They are more likely to engage in risky sexual behaviors. They are more likely to die in an alcohol-related car crash.

I realize that some parents allow alcohol to be served at their children’s celebrations and I have heard several rationalizations for their decision. Many parents think that teens need to learn to use alcohol safely by drinking at home. Others, believing that students are going to drink anyway, want to

provide a safe environment for them to do so. I’ve also had parents tell me that they want to reward their children for not using alcohol in high school by offering it at their grad party.

These arguments are wrong. The reality is that there is no safe amount of alcohol for teens because of their still developing brains. Also, many teens choose not to consume alcohol – over one-third, according to SADD. By celebrating without alcohol we can reinforce their decision to lead substance-free lives.

Even though our children are graduating from high school and entering the ranks of adults, they are still our kids and it is our responsibility to keep them safe. So when you are planning their graduation party, honor their achievements and dreams with a safe, alcohol-free celebration.

The rapture has passed. How was your weekend?

If you’re reading this I’m still here. And so are you.

We’re either all left behind or for the second time since 1994, Rev. Harold Camping is wrong in predicting the beginning of the rapture.

According to Camping, the rapture was to begin 6 p.m., Saturday, May 21. Those not taken to heaven at that time were to be left to roam the Earth until Oct. 21 when life was scheduled to end.

I spent rapture weekend working, watching movies and making tee times for July and August. What did you do?

Depending on your outlook the fact that we’re still here is either a really good thing or a really bad thing. Or maybe it was entirely predictable.

For hundreds, if not thousands of years, different individuals or groups of people have attempted to predict when the end of days would be upon us.

The difference between those making those claims 500 years ago – or even 20 years ago – and today’s doomsday-sayers is technology.

Five-hundred years ago you didn’t have the ability to put out a 140-character message to your followers or have your blog post picked up by an even more influential blogger and viewed by millions.

Nope, back in the old days you had to spread your crazy message by hand and foot.

Fortunately for me, I’ve always been the type that always needs more proof – sometimes it’s a hindrance, but more often

than not my skepticism works for me. Even when it comes to matters of my own faith.

I was raised Lutheran. But as many of my friends, family members and classmates have become more passionate about their faith and more involved in their churches, I’ve faded away from mine.

It’s not because I have anything against religion or don’t believe in the words that come from the Bible. I’m simply doing what I feel is the right thing for myself.

When I was still in school if you name it I did it at church – Sunday school, church, acolyte, youth group, fundraisers, choir, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, etc., etc. etc.

The thing that differentiated me from many of the people I was in these things with was I never really felt it. I was there because I was told to be. If I wanted to go on trips I had to be

in the youth group. If I wanted to be in the youth group I had to attend services every week. As long as I was already attending services every week I might as well sing in the choir and take my turn as the acolyte.

I felt as though none of the decisions regarding my own faith were my own. Once I got the freedom to explore my feelings and beliefs I realized I’m not sure what they are, but I struggle with the idea of blind faith – I’m the type of person that needs concrete evidence.

These days I consider myself to be agnostic – much to the dismay of my friends and family.

What I’ve found, however, is that by not having a passionate connection to one religion or belief, I can appreciate them all much more.

I know some of you will think less of me following this revelation, but I hope

you don’t. I’m not saying your religion of choice isn’t right, I’m just saying it isn’t right for me. At least not right now.

My prediction for the end of days? I can’t say I really have one.

However, I do believe that we’d all be foolish to think that life as we know it is infinite. There will be an end, but nobody has anything concrete to say when, how or why it will happen.

I – like everyone else – don’t have the answer. The one thing I do know is that it didn’t happen last weekend.

COMMUNITY BRIEFS Stoltz of Eden Prairie earns Eagle Scout rank Spencer Stoltz, 14, of Eden Prairie has earned the rank of Eagle Scout and was scheduled to receive the honor during an Eagle Court of Honor Wednesday, May 25, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Waconia.

Stoltz is one of approximately 4 percent of all Boy Scouts who attain the Eagle Rank.

He is the third generation in his family to receive this honor.

Stoltz earned 27 merit badges, six more than the required 21 badges to become an Eagle Scout. He has attended Many Point Scout Camp for three years and has served as the Scribe for his Den in Troop 295.

His Eagle Project was to build lap desks and easels for Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis.

Stoltz had a particular interest in giving back to Children’s Hospital because his younger sister was cared for there for the first four months of her life.

Spencer is active in track, football, and plays the piano. He has also participated in several community theatre productions with the Eden Prairie Players.

He has a 4.0 GPA and is interested in pursuing a career in Mechanical Engineering. Spencer is the son of Jon and Veronica Stoltz of Eden Prairie.

City and schools offer forum for Realtors The city of Eden Prairie and the Eden Prairie School District will be hosting a joint “Eden Prairie Realtor Forum.”

Realtors are invited to attend the event, where they can learn and talk about the latest city and school news from the school district and city leaders.

The event is scheduled 8:30 a.m. to noon, Thursday, June 9, starting in the Cambria Room at the Eden Prairie Community Center, 16700 Valley View Road.

HTC to offer new paramedic program Hennepin Technical College has announced that it is the first institution to offer community paramedic training in response to Gov. Mark Dayton’s signing into law the Community Paramedics Bill, which creates certification for emergency medical technicians-community paramedics.

The course begins in May at the college’s Eden Prairie campus.

Community paramedics will help provide health services where access to physicians, clinics or hospitals is difficult or does not exist, particularly in rural Minnesota, where there is a large population of elderly citizens and a critical shortage of health care professionals.

Another benefit of the expanded role of community paramedics is their preparation to monitor and provide some treatment to patients with chronic diseases and perform minor medical procedures in the patient’s home.

Experienced paramedics who enroll in the program will complete 96 hours of classroom training at the college’s Eden Prairie campus, as well as 196 hours of clinical training at various Twin Cities hospitals.

Riding a cupcake wave: Businesses making big money off small treats

BY PAUL WAHL • SUN NEWSPAPERS Once a favorite treat for tots, cupcakes have been re-discovered by grownups.

From coast to coast, millions of consumers are peeling away paper lines and chowing down on dozens of flavors of the rich and tasty treat. Wedding cakes have been replaced by cupcake trees. The debate over whether they’re a fad or here to stay rages.

Several area businesses have jumped on the bandwagon and plan to ride the cupcake wave as far as it will take them.

“When we first heard about it, we thought it might be a fad and maybe had already passed us up,” said Tom Van Beusekom, president of Crown Plastics in Plymouth.

His company is manufacturing and marketing a line of cupcake trees being sold online. The idea for the product was hatched when a bride asked Van Beusekom to create a suitable display device for wedding cupcakes. Crown Plastics had been building and selling high-end coffee bean dispensers. That aspect of the business has cooled a bit.

The flowering plant Alliaria petiolata, more commonly known as garlic mustard, was introduced into North America from parts of Europe, Africa and Asia as a culinary herb about 150 years ago.

Though still used and processed for food by some, the plant is restricted in Minnesota and in several other states for the harm that it can cause to other vegetation.

Garlic mustard has been found in Bloomington’s Hyland Lake Park Reserve among other natural areas in the Three Rivers Park District and elsewhere in the Twin Cities. Three Rivers has partnered with the Minnesota GreenCorps environmental protection initiative to schedule garlic mustard removals at two parks this month, including Hyland Lake Park Reserve.

WWII vet adrift in Pacific two days after sinking of carrier ship

BY JONATHAN YOUNG • SUN NEWSPAPERS A Japanese shell punched through the hull of the aircraft carrier and hit a torpedo bomber in the hangar deck.

The shell exploded 75 feet from Conrad Gjestvang.

The shock sent Gjestvang flying. He slammed down on the deck, a falling pipe knocking his helmet over one eye.

His friends closer to the blast were dead. “Abandon ship.�

The call rang from the loudspeakers.

Gjestvang stood, not realizing he’d taken shrapnel wounds to both legs and his left arm. He ran to the sponson, a platform protruding from the hangar deck about halfway up the side of the ship.

He jumped.

Splashing into the Pacific in some of the world’s deepest water, Gjestvang looked up and saw the ship listing away

from him. Shipmates were leaping from the flight deck — by now 60 feet or more above the water — and plunging in the sea beside him.

He kicked off his shoes and swam away from the ship as fast as he could so it wouldn’t suck him under when it sank.

But the worst was still to come.

Machinist First Class Conrad Gjestvang of Brooklyn Center was born in Esterville, Iowa, June 21, 1923.

He grew up in Watertown, S.D., and the Bryn Mawr neighborhood of Minneapolis. In the spring of 1942 he graduated from the former West High School, and that September he enlisted in the Navy.

ing course at the University of Kansas in 16 weeks.

“Every day you had to go,” Gjestvang said. “You went there all day long.”

As a machinist, Gjestvang would be responsible to operate and maintain the main engines of his ship, so he went to Milwaukee to learn how to operate the steam engines that powered carriers. His next stop was the Navy base at Bremerton, Wash., to train on a ship like the one he’d be assigned to.

Gjestvang was assigned to a small carrier, the USS Gambier Bay, commissioned Dec. 28, 1943. It was 512 feet long, a dwarf compared to the attack carriers, which often measured more than 800 feet long.

The Gambier Bay was a Casablancaclass carrier, or “jeep carrier,” built by the American company Kaiser. The jeep carriers’ unusually light armor also helped earn them the nickname “Kaiser coffins.” But they were intended as escort ships to protect convoys against submarine attacks and were never supposed to be in large-scale naval battles.

But that’s where Gjestvang and the crew of the USS Gambier Bay found themselves Oct. 25, 1944. They were in the thick of the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the largest naval battle of World War II and perhaps the largest naval battle in history.

In the Battle of Leyte Gulf, the Japanese fleet split into three attack forces. One force approached from the south of Leyte and was destroyed. A decoy fleet, including four aircraft carriers with almost no aircraft on board, drew much of the American fleet away from the northern part of Leyte. That cleared the way for the main assault force to advance from the north.

“They were going to wipe out the invasion of Leyte,” Gjestvang said.

“But we were in the way.”

The Gambier Bay was part of a group called “Taffy 3,” one of three light carrier groups with planes supporting General MacArthur’s invasion of Leyte. Leyte was an island in the Philippines considered a strategic position in the American advance toward Japan.

Taffy 3 had only three jeep carriers, three cruisers, three destroyers and four destroyer escorts. The Japanese fleet boasted four battleships, eight cruisers and thirteen destroyers.

Among the battleships was the Yamato, the largest battleship in the world.

“They started shooting at us at 20

miles away,” Gjestvang said. “And then they could go 30 knots, where we could only go about 18 knots. So they kept getting closer and closer, and we kept running … laying smoke screens and everything else.”

During the action, Gjestvang performed damage control.

“If we had any hits, then we went to go and repair them,” he said.

The ship took hit after hit: twentyeight in all, he estimated.

Because of the thin armor, many of the heavy artillery rounds pierced one side of the ship and went out the other like a rifle bullet. That saved a lot of lives, Gjestvang said, because there were fewer explosions. But it also made water pour in faster.

“One [shell] went down through the engine room,” Gjestvang said. “It went down and then went out through the bottom, and they had the water coming in from two directions.”

Eventually, enemy shells took out both engines, and the ship was dead in the water.

Gjestvang was still running hoses over the ship’s side to pump out the water when a shell blast threw him to the ground. Then he heard the order to abandon ship.

That order came at 8:50 a.m. By 9:07 the ship had capsized. At 9:11 it sank in the Philippine Trench, one of the deepest parts of the ocean.

“Losing your ship is like watching a tornado strike your house,” Gjestvang said. “Everything I had was gone.”

After he jumped in the water, Gjestvang swam toward a life raft, but a shell hit the raft and sent it flying in the air. So he swam to another raft.

The 20-man raft filled up quickly as the men paddled it around, picking up the wounded. When no more could fit, they tied men to the sides so they wouldn’t drift away.

On the raft, Gjestvang discovered he was wounded.

“I didn’t even know I was hit,” he said. “My leg got numb … I put my hand back there. There was a hole in my pants, and I found a hole in my leg.”

He couldn’t do anything about it. All he could do was wait and hope for rescue.

After a while the bottom of the overcrowded raft gave way, and everyone had to “hang on for dear life.”

Gjestvang and his shipmates floated two days and nights without food or water or medical supplies.

“I don’t know how many miles we drifted, but we were thirty miles away from where they thought we were,” he said.

“I thought they were going to shoot us, but they didn’t,” Gjestvang said.

“They were just kind of waving to us.

Respect, you know.”

The crew’s only other company was sharks, which attacked many of the men.

“Sharks got a lot of our guys,”

Gjestvang said. “They could smell that blood in the water.”

Others who weren’t taken by sharks died when they drank the salty ocean water.

The second day, the raft hit an oil slick from a damaged ship, and a black film coated men and raft as they drifted through it. But there was no sign of ship or shore.

“You just hoped somebody would see you,” Gjestvang said.

SC: And you can see this from your office?

GD: Yeah! I can see it from my office.

And somebody came to me and said, “Gene, turn around and look!” So, I’m looking at this thing, and here’s this thing just burning like a roman candle. It’s just amazing.

So, they got it put out and it took some serious thought and engineering and that sort of thing with our consultant and our hired forensic consultant to figure out how to resolve this. … So, it’s like the only water tower in history that burned.

Well, except that it happened twice more – two times subsequent to that.

And, the fire chief will never let me forget this: We put those clock faces on it, and the initial clock faces were … neon lights.

They were neon. And, low and behold one day, this thing starts firing. And fire was coming out of the clock face, because this thing somehow catches on fire and the neon, plasticy kind of stuff starts burning.

So, the fire department goes over there.

And, so its starts for a second time.

Well, then by this time now, on the third incident, George Esbensen is the fire chief now, and he’s a department head, and it’s the night of a council meeting. It was one of those council meetings in early fall, when it’s chilly outside and that was it.

I get a phone call from him, and I think the assistant chief says something like, to George Esbensen, “I’m standing here at the market place tower. … We got fire at eight-o-clock,” or something like that. …

So, I’m betting if there’s a Guinness World Record for being the public works director that had one single water tower be on fire three times, I might have that record. That would be my story.

SC: After, 30 years, and working with residents, what wisdom could you impart on Eden Prairie residents when working with public works? What are the bigger concerns you’ve faced?

What could you clear up with Eden Prairie residents?

GD: Well, you know I think that something that maybe some residents don’t quite fully understand is that cities in Minnesota are a creature of the state, and we get all of our powers from what the state legislature grants to us – nothing more and nothing less.

And so, we’re a pretty highly regulated industry, and a lot of times we do what we do because we have to do it that way. I

think that we’re a community though that shouldn’t be confused with mega-government. I mean, I think most suburban governments are very close to the people.

Anybody that wants to call up the mayor can do that. And, she’ll take the phone call.

But, that doesn’t happen in Minneapolis or St. Paul. …

When was the last time you called someone at the state about a pothole? You can do a pothole number, but if you really are concerned about a pothole [in Eden Prairie], you can call the director of public works because they’ll put you through the front desk right to my line if you want to talk to me. And so I think suburban government in general and Eden Prairie in particular is a very responsive form of government.

I think that we may not always make the decisions people may like, but sometimes we can’t make a different one. But, if we decide to do something that doesn’t fit in with people’s idea of right and wrong, you can generally get an answer about why that is. … We try to be very careful about treating everyone as equally as we can [about our city rules]. …

SC: As you move on, what will be one of the biggest challenges, issues, or topics when it comes to the city’s infrastructure?

GD: Well, there’s a conversation going on right now with the city council and the

Budget Advisory Commission and a number of staff people about how to finance our ongoing maintenance for city streets.

We, as I said, are creatures of the state.

The state has given us the authority to collect fees and funds for sanitary sever systems, for water main systems in the water treatment plant and for storm sewer systems. We can even do some things around street lighting. There’s a lot of things that we can do.

But they’ve never granted us the authority to have what’s called a street utility, where we could send out a bill just like a water bill every month to have a source of funds to pay for the maintenance of streets.

And we don’t – we don’t have a source of dedicated funds for that. We’ve been using some combination of liquor store profits and tax dollars to do that, but we’ve ran up to a cliff here one of these last couple years, and it’s really made the budgeting process more difficult.

And, so, right now that conversation is ongoing. The Budget Advisory commission has been given the assignment to evaluate different funding schemes for the whole thing. I don’t think that’s going to be an arduous task. I think that it will be a challenge, but I think that we’ve got a council that’s poised to make good decisions about that. I think we’ve got an experienced staff to help make those decisions. …

Finally help arrived.

Strong hands pulled Gjestvang and his shipmates from the water.

Sometimes the rescuers had to put ropes around the shoulders of the men and hoist them up.

“You’re so weak, you’re like a wet rag,” Gjestvang said. “You can’t hardly help yourself.”

Had he stayed in the water another day, Gjestvang believes he would have joined the estimated 280 casualties.

The Battle of Leyte Gulf ended as an American victory. The Japanese attack force that sank the Gambier Bay mysteriously turned around and stopped pressing the attack.

“Nobody really knows why,” Gjestvang said. “They could’ve kept

coming and done three times more damage than they did.”

After his rescue, Gjestvang was shipped back home and received 30 days leave before being redeployed on a brand new carrier, the USS Vella Gulf.

He received the Purple Heart, one of the nation’s highest military honors, in 1944 and was honorably discharged from the service in March 1946.

After leaving the military, Gjestvang had a career as a railroad engineer and raised a family of three children. He

has seven grandchildren and 17 greatgrandchildren. This year he is celebrating 60 years of living in his Brooklyn Center home and 63 years of marriage to his wife, Betty.

Eighty-seven-year-old Gjestvang says he wouldn’t want to relive those two days in the water. But he still travels the country for reunions of his shipmates. Even though the number of people at the reunions has dwindled, there is still a strong bond among the crew of the USS Gambier Bay.

“I’d like to get something started here first,” Pomerleau said, “in our own back yard.”

In that backyard, the start-up has put in preliminary bids for a parking lot project for the city of Eden Prairie, and it seems they are poised to get the nod for what would be their biggest project so far.

Birch Island Woods Conservation Area off Indian Chief Road is expected to get a 7,800-square-foot parking lot, and Percoa is positioned to get a bid for nearly the entire parking lot.

The watershed district also awarded the city a $25,000 grant for the projected $55,000 project. The Eden Prairie City Council accepted the grant during its May 17 meeting.

“I think it’s a pretty intriguing concept,” said Nine Mile Creek District Administrator Kevin Bigalke. “It’s one of the reasons the district approved some cost share dollars to go toward the Birch Island project.”

The city’s project calls for a pervious pavement to be used for the entire parking lot, except for a 24-foot section of the entryway, said Stuart Fox, the city’s parks and natural resources manager.

The city has to make a final, formal bid for the project, according to Fox, and prevents sunlight from hitting the ground,” Kearns said. “Then the other seeds can’t germinate.”

Volunteers at the parks will be removing and bagging the garlic mustard plants by hand. Residents interested in joining the cause should wear clothes that can get soiled (including gloves) and bring drinking water for their personal use.

but Percoa gave the lowest preliminary quote among three contractors.

The project could start as soon as July and be wrapped up by September, Fox said.

How it works Two overlapping slabs of the Percoa product form the top layer of a filtration system. Below it are other layers — aggregate material, filter fabric, followed by sand or sub-grade.

The Percoa slabs are cast and cured away from the construction site, so it’s not poured on the spot like most concrete or pavements, Pomerleau said.

Soil and loose impediments can clog the material, but maintenance such as sweeping or vacuuming the surface isn’t frequently needed, Becker said.

Even with 90 percent of a slab clogged, it can still drain 1 inch of

water per hour within a square foot, Pomerleau said.

“Maintenance is not a huge issue,” Becker said.

The product is also being tested at a St. Anthony Falls Laboratory, run by the University of Minnesota, Pomerleau said. Pervious surfaces like Percoa have been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency for treating stormwater, Pomerleau said.

Pomerleau has been in the concrete business since he graduated high school, and he had his own company for 18 years, Concrete Masonry Unlimited, he said.

Percoa business partner Ryan Becker began working with Pomerleau in high school. Becker started his own concrete business five years ago, called Unlimited Concrete Concepts.

Cupcakes FROM PAGE 11 “I think there are as many coffee shops as there are going to be,” said Van Beusekom, who is a native of Loretto and a former mayor. “It was nice to have something come along to replace some of that business.”

One of Crown’s loyal customers in the west metro is Robin Johnson, who opened Sweet Retreat Cupcake Boutique in the trendy 50th and France area of Edina a year ago. Cupcakes, and more recently cupcake pops, are created and sold to customers at the bakery as well as through a growing catering market.

“It’s creating a small bit of luxury everyone can afford and it makes everyone happy,” said Johnson, who hatched the idea during what she calls a midlife crisis.

Her first exposure to the cupcake craze came while visiting San Francisco. She made subsequent trips to Nashville and Chicago to gather input. She traveled to Sprinkles, the California-based chain of cupcake stores in Los Angeles.

“The lines were out the door,” she said.

Taking her degree in food science from University of Wisconsin–Madison, Johnson began developing recipes, including her signature butter crème frosting. Combinations and flavors vary with the season, but her red velvet and salted caramel varieties are consistent best sellers. She uses Van Beusekom’s trees in her store and on the catering side of the business.

The trees come in a variety of sizes, ranging from three-tier to six-tier with an optional Lazy Susan base. Trees come in acrylic and a less expensive Celtec plastic.

Acrylic varieties are clear plastic and the Celtec versions are a white plastic, Van Beusekom explained.

“You can display cupcakes with the acrylic trees and not take away from the cupcakes,” Van Beusekom said.

He is turning his design skills next to cake pops.

Johnson makes them by blending smashed cupcakes and crème cheese frosting, shaping the mixture into a ball and freezing them, then dipping them in white chocolate. Think cupcake on a stick. The stick is where Crown Plastics comes in, but that’s about all Van Beusekom is saying for now.

The cupcake trend is believed to have originated more than a decade ago when the characters in “Sex and the City” began eating them at New York’s Magnolia Bakery. Cupcakes eventually made it onto the Oprah Winfrey Show, and foodies of all types fueled the fire.

Cupcakes were on the menu when Reino Wuollet opened his first bakery in 1944, but sales and popularity over the past year have skyrocketed, according to Aaron Wuollet, manager of the company.

“They’re easy to serve and a lot of fun,” said Wuollet, whose company operates stores in Edina, Robbinsdale and Wayzata, in addition to Minneapolis and St. Paul.

To emphasize the fun, Wuollets plays with cake flavors and icings.

About 45 combinations are available.

Wuollets has also noticed the growing link between cupcake and nuptials.

“They’re so much easier to serve at a wedding,” Wuollet said.

Everyone with a finger in the cupcake business is trusting they will continue to be popular with consumers.

“I’d hate to think they’re the next Krispie Kremes,” Johnson said.

Van Beusekom admitted he wasn’t personally a big fan of cupcakes.

“Most of them have too dang much frosting,” he said.

EP settles for second in state True Team meet

BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Eden Prairie came very close to repeating as state Class 3A boys True Team track and field champion May 20 at Stillwater High School.

The Eagles led by four points with two events remaining before Rosemount outpointed EP in the 3,200meter run and 4x400 relay to claim the state championship.

Rosemount finished first with 851 points while Eden Prairie placed second (827) in the nine-team meet.

Minnetonka was third (748.5), just three points ahead of fourth-place Stillwater (745.5).

“I felt going into the meet that there were four or five teams capable of winning the state True Team title,” said Eden Prairie head coach Bruce Kivimaki. “But it turned into a twoteam deal. Rosemount finished strong in the final two events to pull ahead.

Rosemount was nearly perfect to beat us.

“But I have no complaints about the way our guys competed. We had an excellent meet and it was a lot of fun even though we finished second.”

Eden Prairie had several first-place finishes. Mike Sandle was a double winner, taking first in the long jump with an effort of 22 feet, 3 inches. He also took first in the triple jump (48-2).

Eden Prairie’s David Platner won the 800 in 1 minute, 57.03 seconds.

Eden Prairie’s first-place 4x200 relay team consisted of Met Hines, Rashawn Fountain, Jack Lagermeier and Steve Frisbie. The Eagles’ time was 1:30.50.

The Eagles finished second in the 4x800 relay with Roy Shillock, Aaron Bartnik, Cal Lawton and David Platner.

Eden Prairie’s time was 7:58.17.

Eden Prairie had several other high finishes. Danny Virgin placed fourth in the 110 hurdles (15.39). Sandle was second in the 100 (11.22).

Mohamed Mohamed placed second in the 1,600 (4:19.59). Fountain was runner-up in the 400 (49.32). Matt Griffin finished fifth in the 300 hurdles (40.66).

Bartnik was eighth in the 800 (2:00.49). Sandle added a third-place time of 22.51 in the 200. Jordan Mugarura was fifth in the 200 (22.85).

Lake highlights Eden Prairie was fourth in the Lake Conference meet May 17 at Hopkins High School.

The team standings were: Wayzata 122, Minnetonka 102.5, Hopkins 75, Eden Prairie 65.5 and Edina 51.

Eagles begin defense of section baseball title

BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Defending state Class 3A baseball champion Eden Prairie had a wakeup call heading into post-season play.

The Eagles were blanked 7-0 by Edina May 19.

Eden Prairie was 15-4 overall entering its final regular-season game May 23 against St. Thomas Academy.

The Eagles received the No. 1 seed in the Class 3A, Section 2 tournament and will host 10th-seeded Waconia or seventh-seeded Mankato West at 3:30 p.m.

Saturday, May 28, at Round Lake Stadium.

Eden Prairie must win that Subsection 1 game or its season ends. A victory advances the Eagles into the double-elimination portion of the tournament Friday, June 3, and Saturday, June 4. Those games

would be played at Round Lake Stadium if the Eagles win their first-round game.

The championship game would be 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 7 (and 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, if necessary).

Minnetonka, Shakopee and Buffalo are the other top Section 2 seeds.

“We got pounded in every aspect of the 7-0 loss to Edina last week,” said Eden Prairie head coach Mike Halloran. “I told the guys afterwards that they have to show up ready to play every game.

“We have to be able to hit to be successful in the playoffs. We didn’t swing the bats well against Edina.

We had only three hits, all singles.”

Eden Prairie played won its other two games last week, defeating Hopkins and Minnetonka in Lake Conference play.

The Eagles, 9-3 in the conference, defeated Hopkins 4-2 May 18. Starter Tyler Ruemmele pitched four innings to gain the win. Reliever Grant Soderberg picked up a save.

“Soderberg has been awesome on the mound for us in a relief role,” said Halloran.

Tony Skjefte contributed a run-scoring double.

Ryan Maenke doubled in another Eagle run.

Soderberg chipped in with a two-run single.

Senior pitcher Adam Bray appears to be ready for a strong playoff run after missing most of the regular season with an ankle injury.

Bray, 7-0 last spring, pitched a three-hit shutout and struck out 11 as the Eagles defeated Minnetonka 3-0 May 16. Catcher Danny Blasy hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh.

Eagles girls are third in Lake Conference track Eden Prairie finished third at the Lake Conference girls track and field meet May 17 at Hopkins High School.

The Eagles earned 73.9 points and finished behind Hopkins (135.2) and Minnetonka (83.7). EPHS placed ahead of Wayzata (67.2) and Edina (56).

One of Eden Prairie’s most productive events was the 1,600-meter run.

Eryn Stewart won in 5 minutes, 10.30 seconds. Teammates Brittany Platt and Allie Rudin were third and fourth respectively with times of 5:13.38 and 5:14.08.

Megan Platner was victorious in the 3,200 (11:09.57).

Laura Lawton finished second in the 800 (2:18.49). Hana Fischer placed third in the 100 (13.26 seconds). Megan Kristo was sixth in the 400 (1:02.82).

Maria Steblay placed second in the 100 hurdles (15.34).

Eden Prairie’s third-place 4x400 relay team members were Steblay, Platt, Rudin and Lawton.

Eden Prairie was also third in the 4x800 relay with Carlin Schultz, Alexandria Birkle, Olivia Dengel and Megan Platner.

Danielle Schultz was third in the high jump (4-10). Gabriella Terp placed fourth in the long jump (15-7) and triple jump (33-0).

Chelsie Kraines was fourth in the shot put (34-0) and discus (101-6).
