Angels’ first steps onto their new field!

t h e h o ly a n g e l s s t r e a m p r o g r a m

Advancing your future today! Evolution does not occur solely in nature – academic programs can and must evolve as well. That is why Holy Angels is thrilled to announce our STEM program’s evolution from four disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) to five (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math), and now to six (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Art, Math). This new AHA program is called STREAM!

Growth and progress Holy Angels has long offered our students a program rich in the sciences and mathematics that prepared them for college majors and careers in STEM fields, teaching them to think critically and be passionate about their learning. Our history of success is documented on our STEM page at www.holyangels.org. However, to be truly innovative, to help advance the world’s knowledge, students also need creativity, a vibrant imagination and the liberating feeling of no boundaries. To make a lasting difference in the world, to contribute to the welfare of the common good, artistic vision and technical know-how need to be embedded in a value-laden curriculum that will foster ethical judgment, moral decision making and the kind of integrity that weds knowledge to social justice. Thus, STREAM represents the fullest interpretation of a STEM program, one that will enrich the minds and hearts of all the AHA students who pursue these courses.

Changing the world today Our most recent graduates are already incorporating their love of learning with innovative ideas to produce real change. Graduates like Ivetty, who plans to combine Chemical Engineering with a law degree at Yale University in the hope that there will be swift reaction to environmental disasters in poor neighborhoods. Or Lydon, who will use her Engineering degree from Princeton to bring alternative energy to impoverished areas of South America.

Exciting opportunities for hands-on experience More than just amazing courses, Holy Angels’ STREAM program offers many outside opportunities: • research as close as Englewood Hospital and as far away as the surface of the moon (ExMASS) • the study of heavy metal contamination at the Meadowlands • workshop opportunities with colleges and philanthropic organizations • career education through first hand experiences with alumnae and others in healthcare careers • a chance to create interdisciplinary projects with 3D printing and Project Greenhouse • and so much more! Student recognition will be accorded through induction into one or all of our Honor Societies in Science, Art, and Mathematics.

If you believe in Living Simply, Responsibly and Sustainably as our Holy Angels Community does...

Dear Alumnae, Parents and Friends,

Melinda Hanlon, President

president@holyangels.org

I have always found the beginning of a new year a good time for reflection. As I look back at the last six months I am grateful for the many blessings I have received since arriving here at Academy of the Holy Angels. This issue of Tidings includes our 2013-14 Annual Report to Investors and I give thanks for the generosity of our many benefactors. Your gifts support our mission to provide the highest caliber of educational opportunities here at Academy of the Holy Angels. Our commitment to afford our young women the spiritual, academic, social and extracurricular opportunities to become leaders of tomorrow could not happen without your generous and loyal support. As you explore the pages of this issue, you will find good news of great tidings here at AHA. Our STREAM program invites all of our students to develop the critical thinking and ethical decision-making skills that are the hallmarks of an AHA graduate. Join us as we celebrate the accomplishments of our Angels. Each day I am in awe of the achievements of our young women. In the classrooms, on the fields and most importantly through their service to others, they give each of us our reason to serve the Academy. The dedication and professionalism of our administrators, faculty and staff are reflected in the accomplishments of our students. Our strategic plan, AHA 2020, calls for us to look forward and focus on mission fulfillment and program improvements. To this end, we have begun work to complete a master facilities plan which includes study of enrollment trends, program needs and a strategic marketplace assessment. Our Board is working to define their structure and function to best support the strategic plan vector. Our development committee is focused on the development of both a planned giving program and major gifts initiative. I will keep you posted on all of these processes. Next year we will celebrate our golden jubilee here on the Demarest campus. I wish to extend a special invitation to all our alumnae to come home and visit us. Whether your journey as an Angel began under the dome in Fort Lee or here on Hillside Avenue, all of our alumnae bear witness to the vision and determination of our school’s founder Sister Nonna Dunphy and the mission of the School Sisters of Notre Dame. We often end our school prayer services and liturgies with the following song, “…and with all the Angels we will continue to spread the goodness of God.” I look forward to spreading the goodness of God for and with our Angels. May God bless you for all you do to support us on this journey.

faculty news Kraytem named Educator of the Year AHA faculty member Laura Kraytem was named Educator of the Year by Operation Smile during the 24th Annual Operation Smile International Student Leadership Conference in Limerick, Ireland. AHA’s chapter has over 150 members, many of whom have traveled on mission trips around the world. Last year, Laura served as a Student Sponsor on a mission to Jordan which inspired her to become even more involved. She shared, “I saw my students transformed on so many levels that I wanted to offer them more opportunities for involvement beyond their club meetings at school. I was touched by the award because it meant Operation Smile recognized my passion for supporting my students to do great things...I know that if I can lift their awareness level to action, and tie action to moral responsibility, the world will be a better place. This is the gift AHA gave to me and now I want to give to them.” Immediately following her participation at the conference in Limerick, Laura traveled to Malawi where she spent two weeks on an Operation Smile mission, working as a Student Sponsor and educator. AHA Principal Jennifer Moran applauded Laura’s dedication and passion to OpSmile, noting, “Mrs. Kraytem embodies the dual missions of Academy of the Holy Angels and Operation Smile by providing a transformative education for her students and transforming the world, one smile at a time.”

Members of the AHA community marched among the more than 300,000 participants in The People’s Climate March in New York City on September 21st. Pictured above are faculty members Carol Fay (L) and Joan Connelly (R).

There are some who bring a light so great to the world that even after they have gone, the light remains. On October 11, 2014, the Academy lost alumna and recently retired faculty member Sister Catherine Green, SSND ’50. S. Catherine retired this past June after serving as Religious Studies teacher at AHA for over thirty years. Remembered for her spider web projects, where students learned about their connections with others, she provided a lesson that was still lasting, years later. In the last two decades, the world wide web became her passion as she embraced new technologies and was a patient teacher to not only her students, but fellow faculty as well. Overall, the one comment that was repeated by many at her memorial prayer service and funeral was that she was a great listener. S. Catherine not only heard you but she followed up, remembering every detail. She will truly be missed by the Holy Angels family.

“Sister Catherine brought joy to so many people, myself included, during her time at Holy Angels. She had that absolutely wonderful combination of profound wisdom and generous joy. She will be missed very much, but I am so grateful to have counted myself among those who got to cross paths with her.” –Jackie Heath ’10 5

angels around the halls athletics Martha Merriam spent the summer in Poland and placed sixth in The Cadet World Cup, a fencing tournament in which 109 girls from all over Europe competed. Catherine Apostol has successfully completed the United States Equestrian Federation’s (USEF) High School Equestrian Athlete Program. She was required to document at least 100 hours of training and provide verification of participation in three equestrian competitions during the year.

In June, Kelly Farrell, Lisa Harootunian, Patricia Krisan, Shiho Numakura, Jenny Quispe, Arianne Rowe and AHA faculty members Kate Chambers and Carol Fay participated in Young Neighbors In Solidarity, a project of the Center for Ministry Development. For one week, the group worked in Baltimore, MD in a soup kitchen and a facility that accepts and resells items for a fraction of the original cost to those who cannot afford new materials. The group also spent time at the Catholic Relief Services’ international headquarters in Baltimore, learning about the systemic causes of poverty and the skills needed to advocate for effective ways to address these important issues. They also traveled to Capitol Hill in Washington DC to meet with the aides of the two New Jersey senators and the congressional representatives of two local NJ districts to share their experiences and to advocate for the Food for Peace Bill.

In July, Isabelle Akinyemiju, Christina Careri, Emily Imbarrato, Annie King, Salina Lyu, Jenna Piccinich, Olivia Sheppard, Antonia Thompson, AHA Campus Minister Mrs. Kathy Sylvester and AHA Mission Integration Coordinator Mrs. Joan Connelly volunteered at St. Peter the Apostle School, an SSND-sponsored school in Philadelphia. The group did a variety of tasks to assist the principal and faculty for the opening of school. Yerin Karenna Jeong traveled to El Salvador on a mission trip with members of her church to volunteer at an orphanage called Shalom. The group spent two weeks there doing a variety of service projects.

Kelly Sim took third place at the Philadelphia Runner Junior Golf Championship held in August at the Cripple Creek Golf & Country Club in Dagsboro, Delaware.

Students from various archdiocesan institutions worked together in painting classrooms, working as camp counselors, and assisting at a food pantry.

Fiona Williams coordinated a service trip with Fabretto Children’s Foundation in Nicaragua over the summer. She recruited fellow Angels Juliet Vicari, Cassidy Feerick, Elly Rose Jayson and Abigail Williams to join her on a service trip to Nicaragua where they helped paint a school, build an irrigation system and teach English and team sports. Fiona is pictured digging an irrigation trench with Elly Rose.

Carolina Zulaga spent her summer on a mission trip to Guatemala City working at Programas Sociales de la Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Carmen. This organization helps to educate women and care for their children. Carolina spent five days there, feeding the children, working in the nursery and conducting a seminar on nutrition.

academics Twenty rising juniors and seniors led by faculty members Nancy Schneberger and Gail Fair traveled to Austria and Germany to participate in AHA’s summer study abroad humanities program. They enjoyed musical concerts, visited art museums, attended lectures and presented papers about historical and

cultural events. While in Munich the girls were welcomed at the SSND Motherhouse by S. Brunhild, SSND who shared stories with them and gave them a tour of the grounds. A very special highlight this year was being in Germany to witness the excitement of Germany’s victory at the World Cup Championship.

Mrs. Laura Kraytem led a group of 37 students on a 16 day European tour to three countries in July. Starting in Rome, they visited Assisi, Florence, Lake Garda, Modena, Milan, Paris and Amsterdam. Mrs. Rita Goff, Mrs. Eileen Musich, and, Mrs. Kraytem’s son and daughter-in-law served as chaperones on this trip. The group is pictured standing before the Coliseum in Rome.

LEADERSHIP Amanda Hernandez participated in the Girls’ Leadership Worldwide Program at the Eleanor Roosevelt Center in Val-Kill, NY. Christina Daniello attended a leadership conference, “Shaping your World: Social Media in 2014” at Bucknell University in July where she attended classes, met professors and collaborated with other students on a group project about the ways in which social media and technology have impacted our modern world. Christina also finished her Gold Award Project at Holy Innocents Catholic Church in Neptune, NJ where she refurbished their large prayer garden. Monica Moser attended the National Youth Leadership Forum: Careers in Digital Media, Broadcast and Journalism at Fordham University. She was able to network with a variety of experts in the fields of digital media, public relations and journalism and visit the New York Film Academy where she produced and edited a news segment. Alexandra Alfonso traveled with the All-American Model UN Team to attend a Model UN conference in Beijing, China. She was assigned to the United Nations Human Rights Council committee. Alexandra was the head delegate for the team and was awarded an honorable mention for her efforts. Ingrid Noriega took part in American University’s Community of Scholars Program. While in DC, Ingrid was able to attend briefings at the US Department of State, the US Institute of Peace, the World Bank, and the Embassies of Saudi Arabia and Canada. Aleksandra Atansoska traveled to Macedonia to work with the Children’s Embassy to plan an international conference. She also attended two summer camps: one at American University in Washington, DC focusing on Political Action and Public Policy, and a second at Princeton University concentrating on International Relations. Stephanie Albert attended CSI camp at Richard Stockton College where she investigated simulated crime scenes using a variety of forensic techniques. The program included several interesting

field trips to a hospital morgue, the county jail and the federal air marshals training center. The program culminated with a mock trial. Samantha Pereira attended Space Camp at NASA in Huntsville, Alabama for a week in August. Katherine Koh participated in the Dartmouth Debate Institute at Dartmouth College. The program enabled her to sharpen her debate skills by doing speaking drills and research at the Dartmouth Library. Holy Angels students were invited by S. Eileen Reilly, SSND, the United Nations NGO representative for the School Sisters of Notre Dame, to the UN celebration of the International Day of the Girl in October. The program, called Girls Speak Out, included presentations of the poetry and stories by girls from around the world.

THE ARTS Bridget O’Donnell won 2nd Place in the Under-15 Solo Irish-Fiddle Competition in Sligo, Ireland in August. Her fiddle teacher is Mrs. Rosemarie Flanagan (mother of AHA alumnae Maeve ’07 and Bernadette ’09).

e always say how fast time flies, and the current seasons are no exception! The fall and winter have been so busy at Holy Angels – Foundation Day, Alumnae Weekend, the Senior Halloween party (yes – that still goes on and is always well attended), Junior Ring Ceremony, Thanksgiving food and turkey drive, and all of our Christmas events. Take a moment and think back to when you experienced these events at AHA. Do you remember what you and your friends dressed up as at the Senior Halloween party? Was your class ring the “traditional” onyx stone or were you able to choose your own design? Do you still have your Christmas ornament? Alumnae Weekend was a fantastic time, both during the day and at the wonderful dinner dance where over 200 alumnae came and reminisced over these things and more. This year we witnessed an especially touching bond, as two classes came together to donate to Holy Angels in memory of their classmates who have passed away. The Class of 1995 gave in memory of their classmate, Katy Fahey. Katy was an artist, and in a fitting tribute, her classmates raised money specifically for a 3D printer that will be used by the Art Department for classes such as Studio Art 1, Honors Studio Art 2, AP Studio Art, and Digital Design. In addition, the Class of 1984, who celebrated their 30 year reunion, collected funds at the reunion itself and donated in memory of their three deceased classmates, Mary Cahill Clarke, Denise Bell Hawkins and Veronica Pavloski. Their donation was used towards furniture for the AHA Learning Commons. These were both wonderful tributes, and a great way for people to come together to show their love of Holy Angels and their lasting connection to one another. I wish you many blessings for the coming new year. To our newest alumnae Angels that are home from college – come back and see us while you are home. We miss you and love to hear how you are spreading those wings! Best wishes for many happy returns to the Academy! Karen Sullivan Camporeale ’88

Dear Friends,

2013-2014

ANNUAL

REPORT to i n v e s t o r s

The Academy of the Holy Angels is pleased to present our 20132014 Annual Report to Investors. One of the ways AHA maintains the caliber and diversity of our educational programs is through our donor support of the Annual Fund and contributions to capital and special projects. Once again, our alumnae, current and past parents, faculty, staff and friends have generously responded to our appeal. The Annual Fund directly supports our mission to provide our students with an education characterized by critical thinking skills, collaborative effort and creativity resulting in graduates who have the confidence, persistence and mindset to make the world a better place. On behalf of the entire AHA community, thank you for your loyalty and generous support. Your gifts directly benefit our students each day. In the words of our foundress, Blessed Theresa Gerhardinger, I pray that God will bless you as you continue to bless us here at Holy Angels. “May the strength and blessing of God the Creator, Redeemer and Holy Spirit be with you this day and forever. Amen.

thank you!

Sincerely, Melinda A. Hanlon President

wa y s t o g i v e Forms a gift can take:

Memorial/Honor Gifts

Bequests

Cash

The simplest form of gift, an outright cash donation qualifies as a charitable deduction for federal income tax purposes. Online Giving

Giving is only a click away. Please visit our website, www.holyangelsalumnae.org/annualfund.

A bequest is a gift by a will. It can be given as a specific amount, as a portion of an estate, or as a remainder share. Contributions to the Academy of the Holy Angels qualify as charitable tax deductions and may help reduce estate tax liability. Your attorney or financial advisor can best provide tax information for your specific situation.

Securities

A gift of securities, stocks or bonds entitles the donor to an income tax deduction. A gift of appreciated securities may also reduce capital gains tax liability. To transfer securities, please contact the Office of Development at 201-768-7822, ext. 224.

Secure a permanent place in Holy Angels’ history while helping to ensure its future by purchasing a tax-deductible engraved brick. It is an excellent way to preserve your name or that of a loved one for years to come. Gifts-in-kind represent non-monetary donations to the Academy of the Holy Angels such as books, equipment and special services.

A gift of real estate to the Academy of the Holy Angels provides the donor an income tax benefit as well as reducing capital gains since the market value of appreciated property is deductible.

For further information and any other inquiries on giving to the Academy of the Holy Angels, please contact the Office of Development at 201-768-7822, ext. 224 or email development@holyangels.org.

Corporate and Matching Gifts

Many corporations provide resources to supplement the support by employees for charitable institutions. This is a simple and effective way for contributors to increase the value of their gifts. Donors are encouraged to check with their respective employer’s Human Resources department about the availability of this program.
