FITNESS PROFESSIONALS SHARE THE KEYS TO THE PERFECT BEACH BODY

W

hile we don’t actually have a ‘summer’ period and we experience tropical weather year round, the July-August vacation period is generally accepted as “beach season” in Trinidad. Schools and Universities are closed and the relaxed social climate just makes visits to any of our popular coastal spots feel right. However, right it may feel there is something that just feels wrong about hitting the sand and sea without a respectable beach body. By nature, everyone won’t be physical perfect. However, with consistent work and the right advice you can be on the way to your dream beach figure. Here, some of the country’s best fitness professionals share the keys to the perfect beach bod. Renowned husband and wife fitness pair Imran and Reshma Razac of Body by Imran Supplements & Nutrition shared some important insight on getting the perfect abs. No doubt, great abdominals are a prerequisite for a banging beach body. Reshma spoke of her love for the abdominal wheel before her husband/ trainer went into more detail about what is needed for achieving the finished product. “There are five major exercises that get you great results… Hanging abdominals, windscreen wipers, cable leg raises, the wheel and planks. The key is adding weight to you ab workout. Exercising without weight will give you a flatter stomach, but in order to get the muscles to protrude and really be defined takes the used of extra weight,” said Imran. He went on to state that no one abdominal exercise is perfect since the abdominal region is made up of different zones including the obliques which all need to be worked out equally. Imran also noted that the focus should more holistic and that he entire core should be strengthened. “If you have a weak lower back, you’ll have weaker abs and vice versa.” As such, he advised a con-

sistent whole core workout with the inclusion of a proper diet. Joshua Lee of Concierge Fitness Trinidad took the time to expound on getting the perfect legs. “For legs I like to incorporate a lot of explosive plyometric exercises and I try to pay attention to functionality ad practicality. Lee went on to single out some of his favourite exercises. “The most important leg exercise is the squat. There are several variations from squat jumps to split squats. I also like to incorporate a lot of hip thrusts which are also effective. For calves, I recommend calf-raises (either seated or standing) and these can be done on one leg as you build leg strength. This trainer also stressed the importance of proper nutrition saying that hydration is paramount to health and results. He said the average person should consume roughly eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day with more for more active people. Lee also said nutrient timing is integral to achieving the results needed. Several small meals stretched throughout the day works better than the old school method of consuming three meals per day. EXPERTS SPEAK ON SUMMER STYLE

S

chool’s out and that means it’s time to hit the streets. However, nobody wants to be caught during the vacation period looking a hot mess. Indeed, all the precocious pedestrian traffic and the endless array of events during the ‘summer’ means people need to up their wardrobe game. ET&T spoke to some people with a firm grasp on fashion to find out what the latest trends are this season. A representative from chic women’s boutique Zadora Store told ET&T ladies will be looking to step out in a variety of styles this season. “Joggers, Body Jeans, Crop Tops and jumpers are popular choices. Of course, beachwear is also in demand. Bathing suits with pullovers are popular,” said the rep.

Maurice Bernard of popular men’s outfitter Thread ID also gave some insight into what guys are wearing this season. “A variety of joggers from acid wash to printed

and plain denim joggers are in style. A lot of men are also requesting floral shirts and tanks. Men’s short shorts are also big sellers. The pants must be above the knee. They come in a vari-

ety of prints. Even the Aztec prints are still popular even though it came out in 2012. Bernard said the shorts and vests are always popular at this time since T&T usually follows the four fashion seasons of the first world. Even though we have a Tropical climate year round, vests and shorts become popular as he says “less is more in summer couture.” The Thread ID rep also added that this fun season usually inspires vibrant colours in pieces even down to the footwear. He said Espadrilles are currently the top seller when it comes to men's shoes. Just check our events pages at the back of the magazine and you will see there is substance to what was said here. DESON DOES SWIMWEAR RIGHT

DESIGNER SHARES KEYS TO GOOD SWIMWEAR AND MORE!!! B

elmont bred, Woodbrook resident Ayinde Deson Sealy is one of the most talked about local designers at the moment. This is with good reason since he is one of the premier swimwear designers in the country and we are in the swimwear season. Sealy says the demand for his custom beach couture is in ridiculously high demand at the moment and he says the influx of beachwear and pool-themed events are part of the reason why. Girls would usually state that they wanted original pieces so they wouldn’t be caught in the same outfit as others. Another reason is Deson’s attention to detail and producing the finest quality work available. The designer believes that what sets him apart is the fit and finish of his pieces. He shared with ET&T that since his preadolescent years he would compare locally made clothing with foreign clothes and he vowed to one day nullify the obvious difference in quality between the two.

2

Deson’s journey started as a young boy trying to follow in his mother’s (a seamstress) footsteps. Oddly enough, she didn’t want him to be a tailor, but his high school Garment Construction teacher convinced Deson and his mother that fashion was truly his calling. Sealy spoke highly of Tony and Sheldon Haynes of

Men at Work tailoring store. He was impressed, by their speed and skill and as luck would have it, he was offered a job there a day after writing his final school exam. Stints working with Millhouse and a few other places followed before Deson ventured on his own making all sorts of youthful, urban designs for both

men and women. His hats were a big draw, attracting celebrities such as JW& Blaze and Dwayne Bravo to frequently cop his signature headwear. However, Sealy stepped back from making menswear for a moment to facilitate the large demand for female clothing. He says it takes less time to make swimwear and the financial dividends are also greater. Deson describes his designs as edgy while remaining elegant. He stays true to his high standards and is not afraid to tell a client if he thinks a particular swimsuit choice is the wrong one. When asked what the key to making good swimwear is, he revealed “It’s all about the fit. The right fit will make both the outfit and the person wearing it look better.” Peep his array of talents at www.facebook.com/DesonAyindeDesigns or continue following ET&T for more updates on this designer.

LOCAL NEW WEB SERIES KICKS OFF NEWS THE INTERN TO DEVELOP YOUNG FILM TALENT ONE VIEW AT A TIME W

ith the paucity of proper local content on the nation’s airwaves, there should be a mad rush for advertisers to get involved with local production houses. However, this is not the case, as Television stations prefer to show syndicated programming from abroad. It’s no wonder more and more people are gravitating toward putting their content online. One such program that has been recently generating major online buzz is reality show/competition The Intern. The SLAGIATT Productions presentation follows six interns as they learn the ins and outs of the film industry while vying for a job at SLAGIATT. It is similar to Donald Trump’s hugely popular The Apprentice. ET&T spoke to the good people at SLAGIATT who revealed that the new series is all about helping young people to realize and take advantage of opportunities. Show creator Ahmad Muhammad said the show was conceptualized when a couple fellow members of UTT

Film School approached him for an internship since he already owned a company. A couple interested persons soon turned into five and instead of hiring them all, he came up with this creative venture. Collaborator on the project Kalifa Clyne says the program is as fun as it is fulfilling as it features young, talented individuals with a hunger for success. She shared that the challenges faced by the participants are gripping and since its inception there have been a lot of calls from young filmmakers to be a part of the project. The challenges will hinge on the many facets of filmmaking from photography to editing. The makers of the internet series hope corporate T&T will come together to offer more support for similar projects in the future and eventually the local film industry will be prominent once again. Until then, follow the action as it unfolds via Facebook and YouTube by following this link. https://www.facebook.com/TheInternTT

n the absence of a steady stream of local entertainment content on television, new reality series Chick Mansion has fast become the talk of the town. The series follows over a dozen beautiful and enterprising young women as they go about their daily routines in their respective fields. Cast-member Carla Singh says action is made compelling by the special relationships within the show. She posits that the majority of the cast were childhood friends and the rest are made up of each other’s’ friends. The overall production of the show is undertaken by castmember Stacy Browne, her brother Dexter Browne and Hayden Louis of Buttervision productions. The direction for the show was established by Dexter Browne who made several marks in the US while working as a Celebrity Photographer in Los Angeles. His client list included names like Vanessa Williams, Rick James, Miguel, 6

Cash Money, Gabrielle Union, LisaRaye, Tyrese, Tone Loc, Rick Foxx, Kat Williams and many more. Dexter describes himself as a “Digital Guerilla” who is able to make a lot from a little. This he indeed accomplishes as not many expected to witness a full reality series that was shot on two iPhones in a prime time slot. However, this is an actual reality and thus demonstrates the enormous potential for developing local content presently. The promo has garnered interest from foreign viewers who continue to express a willingness to view the episodes online. ET&T posed the question of how such a new and experimental project ended up with a prime time slot on TV6. The Buttervision team chalked it up to the enormous energy exhibited in each scene and the novel way in which the scenes were produced. They elaborated by stating that the show represents a wave of new media that is born

ET&T • JULY, 2014 • www.amgtt.com

from the persons appearing in it. It represents an organic expression that truly captures what we describe as “undisturbed culture”. The use of cell phone cameras (iPhone 5s) was a crucial choice to avoid the impact of a strong camera presence that often distorts the energy of the participants. They added that the content stands out because of the quality of the execution and the nature of the content that was captured in the execution. Essentially, the series showcases an organic effort to make TV from the energy that existed among friends who in combination possessed the skill sets to make it. The trailer and first episode reflects a youthful exuberance, but the producers claim the target demographic is not as stringent as one would think. They went further to say that they expect a strong viewership ranging from 16 to 106. The wide range accounts for the fact that

the show is “as much a compelling visual presentation as it is a reality narrative” allowing for it to appeal on different levels in different age groups. The producers ultimately expect this series to open the door for future titles that promote the unique local culture of Trinidad & Tobago. Dexter Browne views the series as the ultimate platform for local content. “We hope that this show will offer a “blue print” for other producers to complete their dream projects and to participate in the ongoing revolution described as the “Democratization of Media” where each citizen has a contribution to the TV collective that shapes us as a nation,” said Browne. At the end of the day, you can read what you want about this project, but only truly viewing it for yourself will let you into the true experience. Look out for Chick Mansion TV on CCN and keep following the crew on Facebook.

VYBZ KARTEL TO SUE OWEN ELLINGTON Imprisoned Dancehall superstar, Vybz Kartel has signaled his intent to sue recently retired Jamaican Police Commissioner, Owen Ellington over comments he made on a local television show in April, claiming the deejay was the head of a gang responsible for over 100 murders islandwide. The polarizing entertainer, who was convicted of and given a life sentence for the 2011 murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams in March, intends to file a multi-million dollar civil lawsuit, through his legal team. Ellington, who had been the head of the Jamaica Constabulary Force since 2009, told the Television Jamaica (TVJ) show, All Angles, “Vybz Kartel led a gang which was responsi-

ble for over 100 murders, and we have been telling the country this for a long, long time. Every time we moved against this gang, we were criticized, we were condemned and we were accused of being malicious against this individual. In fact, if you look at his defense, what was his defense? That there was a conspiracy on the part of the police.” Though there has been no evidence presented to support Ellington’s comments, they caused a stir locally, with many wondering why the ex-commissioner would make them after Kartel’s conviction and subsequent sentencing just weeks earlier. Tavares-Finson himself called the comments out of line, saying they were an attempt to prejudice Kartel’s appeal.

commitments and such. We are also working on the documentary that will look at the entire 35 year career of this band. The hardest part is getting hold of people who helped shape the history of the band to tell their story for the film. Stevie Wonder for example used to have us around his studio all the time in the early 1980s but he’s got his people you know and maybe he doesn’t even know that we been trying to get at him. But we have a bunch of people who have been interviewed over the 2.5 years with many more to come. It won’t be like the Marley film which was very Jamaica-focused. This film you will see police and riots and punks, you know, we come from a concrete jungle.”

But that’s exactly what John Legend’s wife was branded by Forever 21 when she arrived for a shoot when she first started out in the modeling world. The 28 year-old told DuJour magazine: ‘I showed up on set and they asked me if they could take a photo. ‘And they shoot that photo off to my agency, who then calls me as I’m sitting in the make-up chair, and they say, “You need to leave right now. They just said that you are fat and you need to get your measurements taken”.’ Chrissy, who has modeled for both Cosmopolitan and Vogue, added: ‘And I hate you, Forever 21. I hate you so much. Honestly, you’re the worst.’ It’s not the first time the model has spoken out about the incident. In 2012 she tweeted: ‘So next time you pass a Forever 21, remember the fact that they are a bunch of a******* who fired me mid-makeup for being fat.’ 8

DRAKE’S NEW ALBUM WILL BE CALLED ‘VIEWS FROM THE 6’ Drake is emerging as the hardest working man in show business these days. Along with the recent hosting of the ESPYs on ESPN , gearing up for OVOFest in Toronto, and getting set for a massive 31-city tour with Lil Wayne, Drizzy announced that his fourth studio album will be called Views From The 6. Drake hinted at the album on “0 To 100” when he rapped, “We already got spring 2015 poppin’ / PND droppin / Reps-Up P droppin’ / Majid Jordin droppin’, OB droppin’ not to mention me droppin’.” Now that the project has a title, perhaps we can expect the album during the first quarter of 2015. Based on the songs Drake has been letting loose as of late, the album should be interesting.

t was announced all the way back in March that popular production outfit Millbeatz entertainment would be putting together a competition to unearth fresh talent. Artistes would send videos of themselves singing original compositions to Millbeatz for scrutiny by a panel of judges. The best of the bunch would be posted online and the one with the most likes would win the opportunity to be featured on a Millbeatz riddim. Four months later and a winner has been announced. We caught up with Millbeatz H.N.I.C David Millien for some feedback and a little insight into his other current and future moves. ET&T: What did you plan to achieve with the competition? Millien: Ever since the beginning we always had a connection with the streets and the ground so to speak. Our main plan was to do a project where we could stay close to the streets and create an avenue for youths to be heard. A lot of young, talented people may not have the money to do regular recordings and this was just to put them out there.

We will also be opening him up to various marketing opportunities so we’ll be taking him on an interview tour to different media houses. JC Management will be assisting with some of the promotions to put him out there

ET&T: As it relates to actual music being released, what are you currently working on? Millien: We are working on two albums for Dee Dee and ESoul. There is a lot of work with news artistes coming out soon as well. We a lot did some stuff with M1 a.k.a Menace that you can look out for.

ET&T: Apart from the competition what projects have you been involved in? Millien: I recently returned from New York. I spent a month over

ET&T: The band launches have already begun. Soon the Soca will flood the radio. What will you be contributing? Millien: Right now the team is engaged in writing sessions every single night for the next few weeks. We are putting together stuff to start shopping around to some of the bigger artistes soon. You will be hearing some soca stuff from Millbeatz entertainment soon. David Millien poses with winner Tevin

ET&T: Was it a success in that regard? Millien: I think we met our aim. There were a lot of entries. We received about 35 videos. We even had entrants from as far as Guyana so it was a bit surprising as well. ET&T: What did you think of the eventual results and what are your thoughts on Tevin in particular? Millien: Well there was a panel of judges who chose the five finalists and then it was up to a fan vote. I found it interesting when Tevin was picked because it gave me insight as to what the public is into. It was just him beating the desk and stuff and there was all this raw energy.
