ust weeks to go before the Greatest Show on earth and one of the soca industry's fastest rising stars is busy as expected, moving from fete to fete, but happily fulfilling his commitments. Ricardo Drue knows nothing of ingratitude. Humbly he chases his dream and quietly he sets his targets and capitalizes on every opportune moment granted to achieve his goal. Marketing and branding are his two favourite words and with a team of hardworking go getters at his side, the artiste who crept onto the scene with Vagabond a couple years ago, is making waves with "Professional" and "BET" in 2016. Admitting to ET&T that it's been an ongoing learning experience, Drue who resides overseas outside of T&T carnival, says he's learnt quite a lot from observing the careers of others. From international celebrities to entertainers who've reached the heights of success here in the Caribbean, the young artiste explains that he's seen how instrumental branding and promotion are in the business of entertainment. "Branding myself was really important from the very beginning. Even before the success of ‘Vagabond’ in 2014, the team knew we had to establish the brand, which we essentially did when we introduced, ID Nation,” said Drue. Online, Ricardo’s team of professionals, who he admits he was lucky to bring together, since they’re all accredited marketing and media professionals, have silently created a mechanism that works seamlessly to deliver continuous information to fans and music lovers, around the world. Like magic, that machine is working and Ricardo is doing his part on stages across T&T, the Caribbean and essentially the world At Soca In Moka on January 3rd, the young, passionate Drue felt the embrace and adoration of a crowd that included mature and young fetters. His Roy Cape entourage strongly backing his every stage move, the "Professional" delivered a performance that was a

cut above the rest, singing powerfully and energetically entertaining soca lovers. This too is something that's built into the ID brand as he calls it. On social media, Ricardo has trumped up massive support from many. Following each per-

formance, his Instagram account spews out recorded footage, complete with proper branding tags. “My team has made a lot of sacrifice to get to this point,” he admits, adding, “You really can’t do much without a strong team of people in your camp.”

Drue will compete in the International Soca Monarch competition’s semifinal round on January 17th at the Queen’s Park Savannah in Port-of-Spain. “Drive and ambition are two really important factors in this business. I’ve learnt that you must have that natural passion and drive to succeed. Self-motivation is the best motivation,” said the young entertainer. With a short season at hand, Drue is making every moment count. Whether he performs ‘Professional’ or ‘BET’ at the ISM semifinals is anyone’s guess but one thing’s for sure, no matter the decision, Ricardo Drue will deliver his song with stage performance, charisma and energy that surpasses many.

SHAL & NUTRON ON A MISSION TO PARTY WITH FRIENDS

e has sufficiently silenced his critics and successfully transitioned from introducing mega soca stars to himself being introduced amongst those stars on stages across the globe where soca is… and the journey continues. According to Shal Marshall, “my mission for Carnival 2016 is to continue to deliver great music to the people who love soca music … even if you are not a fan of Shal Marshall at least you are a fan of soca music and I want to be in that … I want to solidify my name even more as one of the names when you say soca, yeah Shal is one name that will call!” With Carnival 2016 quickly approaching Marshall has seemingly moved closer to accomplishing that mission. When the road is cleared in the wee hours of Ash Wednesday and the costumes are either discarded or tucked away, ‘Party’, a mid-tempo song and his runaway hit is sure to be comfortably lodged on the 2016 Carnival playlist. According to Shal, Party which was produced by GBM Nutron has all the elements of Carnival, “You could sing along, you could dance, you could rock … it has jump up, wine, lavway … it’s a song that can play anytime … You don’t really get these songs as an artiste, where it is loved by old, young, everybody… It’s a great thing!” Known for releasing high quality videos, Marshall plans to release three for this season - for ‘Party’, ‘Friends’ and ‘Time of My Life’, the last which will be shot on Carnival Monday or Tuesday. This year he plans to step up an even further notch with the release of his first album by the beginning of February. The album may be aptly titled ‘Party’, “I’m thinking ‘Party’ because it’s like I come from party. I came from the belly of the dance … whether it is from a DJ standpoint, however you want to class me ... also party 2

is we culture! – It could be by a bar, it could be by a friend’s house – right now we are by a band room and it’s a full lime here with drinks and cooking and rum … we love to party and that’s what it is!” Among his nine offerings for this season, there exist three collaborations, including ‘Dutty’ with Ravi B, another with Talpree and the very popular ‘Friends’ with GBM Nutron. According to Nutron once Shal had emailed the track to him, “instantaneously I felt like a bit of nostalgia in the music and we decided to do this track for friends … people who have been with us from the very beginning … day ones basically ... people who have been rallying with us … supporting us.” Shal and Nutron have had a long working relationship with

Nutron mostly operating in the capacity of producer on numerous tracks. This is not their first vocal collaboration however as they previously released a track called ‘Addicted’ in 2014. ‘Friends’ was produced by Red Room Studios in a season where the GBM family has opened up to working with much more producers than usual inclusive of Nicholai Greene, Precision Productions and Lunatic Productions. Nutron started off singing with his younger brother Kevon Carter but songwriting and producing took off first. In this capacity he has worked with the mega talents of Machel Montano, Destra Garcia, Sekon Sta, Preedy and Jaiga. He hopes to work with Bunji Garlin and Fay Ann Lyons as well as some newer talents like

Voice and Erphaan Alves. Having established himself in these areas he is now focused on developing himself as a vocalist “This is the first year that I decided to go in this hard … in the years past I have given contributions like one maybe three songs at most but I really wanted to challenge myself and also I have been feeling a body of work is important.” As such he has nine releases so far this year. Apart from ‘Friends’ with Shal he has recorded ‘Wine Up on You’, ‘Queen’ with Kevon Carter, ‘Enjoy’ with Lani K, ‘Mash Up’ with P. Goods, ‘My Gyal’, ‘Company’, ‘I Responsible’, ‘So Blessed’ and the very popular and relatable ‘Scene’ which is literally causing quite a scene on the local airwaves and may likely do so in the fetes. Nutron is intent on creating a genuine connection with the fans of soca music even beyond the Carnival 2016. With regard to ‘Friends’ he would like for people to remember their supporters and their defenders when they enjoy the song, “this one is for you!”. Shal added that “they always tell you that friends are better than pocket money … I’ve lost many friends along the way – lfil, Trotman … but additionally it’s the kind of song that when u hear it you just want to pump … you and your team !”

LOCAL K. RICH STAYS TRUE TO THE GAME NEWS FOUR YEARS ON K

. Rich was philosophical when addressing concerns that he hasn’t been able to replicate the success he had with his song Nothing Less. He began by saying that he felt the year following his hit (Nothing Less) release was also a strong year before delving deeper into the issue. “Personally, the success of my music, or lack thereof in some cases, has revealed to me issues within our industry. Whether it be that our music is dictated by our festival which does nothing to promote or enhance our culture throughout the year or that because there is simply just not enough time in a carnival season to give airplay to the over 100 artistes that release music locally (far less regionally) for a 3 month festival “season”. The artiste then spoke about the importance of not losing oneself in the process of being

artistic. “K. Rich in 2012 was an alter ego to Kenneth Richards. I have taken the last 4 years to melt aspects of the two together so that it doesn’t have to feel like turning on a switch to become a different person. I have seen how some artistes get consumed by their alter-ego, so this was particularly important to me. In essence, it is the true meaning of “Keeping it real”. Many have argued that there

is a dearth of real quality songs released for the carnival season this year. Richards seemed to emphasize as much saying he believes the short season rush is affecting music. “I honestly do not believe that short carnival seasons like this one do any good for the artistes. A musical piece takes time to develop from inception. The hectic, fast-paced nature of a short carnival 2016, will not allow for all the artistes to work

to their fullest potential and as a result I believe many may be forced to release substandard material. That being said, I have heard a handful of songs that really stand out to me!” He also took time to share a bit about his 2016 offerings and your expectations. “I’ve released two songs, very opposite in nature,” he said. “The first release was “Soca Religion” which encapsulates all that I am thankful for that carnival and Trinbago has to offer. It is meant to be a cultural anthem that allows devoted masqueraders to give thanks to the most high for the blessings granted but never promised to us. On the opposite end of the spectrum, and for my second release, there is “Wicked”! This fiery bumper anthem is a plea for mercy to all those with the wickedest of wicked wines! “Wicked” promises to have waistlines bumping from start to finish and that’s just the way we like it in The Rich Life!”

EVOLVE 2016, RAISES THE FETING STANDARD IN CENTRAL TRINIDAD

T

&T’s Carnival 2016 may be in full gear. However, amidst the plethora of all inclusives, cooler events and major concert shows planned for the Soca capital of Port-of-Spain, the new annual mainstay in the Carnival calendar ‘Evolve’ recently encouraged several feters to journey to the central Trinidad borough of Chaguanas for a round of premium partying. For its 2016 edition the grounds of Presentation College Chaguanas were abuzz with the spirit of true festivity as the masses came out in fine fashion to party with past pupils and esteemed alumni of this prestigious educational institution. ‘Evolve’ attracted some of the country’s most enthusiastic Soca music fans which included several media personalities, renowned socialites and prominent businessmen. One 2016 ‘Evolve’ attendee was asked recently about her C2K16 party experience highlights. She made it clear that the ambience and amenities at the 4

Presentation College all-inclusive reigned supreme. There was no shortage of food and drink at the event and the bars boasted a variety of premium drinks and spirits as well as shots, exotic mojitos and cocktails, while the food booths provided an assortment of local and multicultural delicacies which catered to the eclectic tastes of its loyal audience. The food selections ranged from Curry, Roast Pork, Beef Sliders and Pepper Roti, to Creole

dishes, Sandwich Stations, Corn Soup, Doubles and scrumptious desert offerings. For several attendees this year’s entertainment line-up also brought lasting memories with performances from vibrant and talented performers 5 Star Akil, Sekon Sta, Jaiga and College Boy Jesse who moved the massive audience with their catalogues of Carnival hits. Much to the delight of both the younger and mature fetters,

Chutney-Soca Monarch Ravi B brought a lively, pulsating vibe with his many crossover classics. In addition to the premium food and drink and excellent party and socializing atmosphere, perhaps the most unforgettable moment was the hyped up crowd singing in unison to the songs of artiste Kerwin Du Bois who rocked the audience with favourites such as “Circles”, “Monster Winer” and “Too Real”. The welldressed and well-mannered audience held nothing back when Du Bois brought onstage Soca Songstress Patrice Roberts to perform their 2016 smash “Unforgettable”. It was indeed evident that Evolve 2016 was not only successful but will also remain a Carnival fixture for many seasons to come. The Presentation College Alumni will definitely ride this positive momentum going into all of their other upcoming efforts as patrons eagerly anticipate next year’s Carnival extravaganza. Chuck Gordon, Sekon Sta and King Bubba have all signed on to Focus Management Ltd for Carnival 2016. The move could see the three share the same stage at events throughout the season. “It’s a blessing to be working with such talented artistes. Each of them is on the cusp of reaching new peaks in their respective careers and for us at Focus Management it’s a real privilege to help them achieve it,” said Shane Stanford, CEO of Focus Management. season in soca music earlier this year. The Fatima College Alumni plans to put that experience to good use to ensure continued successes for his other clients. “Bubba stepped out from the studio and started making some serious noise in Barbados last year. And Chuck well he’s the two time Calypso Monarch and looking to make it three in a row. My role is to put all systems in

place to help them all achieve their full potential,” he said. The three artistes have already begun leaning on each other’s talent to improve their respective product as evident with Sekon writing Bubba’s 2015 hit “Mash up”. “That’s what real creativity is all about. Feeding off of each other and learning from each other. When you try to keep eve-

rything to yourself you’re cheating the fans and most importantly you’re cheating yourself from growing as an artiste,” explained Sekon about the collaborative process. SEAN PAUL CONTRIBUTES TO GREEN MOVEMENT The singer said he was troubled by pollution and environmental degradation. Sean Paul, the Grammy award-winning musician who sang the Love Song to the Earth with other celebrities says, “I need lungs to sing. I’ve got asthma.” The Jamaican rapper and pop singer is “going more and more green”, getting familiar with solar power, reducing

waste. He wants less pollution. Accompanied by Jerry Cope the director of the song and music video, and cinematographer Louie Schwartzberg at a press interaction at the Climate Conference in Paris on Thursday, the singer said he was troubled by pollution and environmental degradation. Jamaican athletes are having to run in smog in his country, he said. “I was driven here in an electric car, and was asking how much it costs. Crazy that people shop in stores... in one day they could buy that car,” he said referring to the affordability of electric vehicles. Sean Paul extolled the power of music to make an emotional appeal to people and promised to do even more for the environment, including Jamaica. The Caribbean country faced a crippling drought last year, which left many, including its coffee growers, in severe distress. The Love Song to the Earth, viewable on a website of the same name, features nature and landscapes with the message, “You are no ordinary world”. Paul McCartney and Jon Bon Jovi among others are part of the group that made the song. Proceeds from the song's sales and video viewership go towards keeping fossil fuel in the ground through the NGO Friends of the Earth.

Career: Assistant to an HSE Coordinator at T&TEC This beauty doesn’t consider her modeling accomplishments to have amounted to much of a career opportunity. In that span she has worked with photographers such as Ephraim Hunte, Jodel Derby, Marc Jeffrey, Nigel Reid, Marlon James, Kerron Riley and Rainier Lange. She’s also found herself in a few ads as well. They include Minute Maid Fruit Cooler (2009), Republic Bank Credit Card Theft (2010), Slam 100.5fm Youthquake

(2013) While Ramsammy does not believe modeling is her future career path, she is really into fashion. Her favourite designers are Wadada, Delia Alleyne and William McIntosh. However, she does not fully embrace the model lifestyle. Jeaunise says her looks are mostly luck. “I don't have a regime. I wake up every day and hope for the best. CHIT

CHAT

M1 AKA MENACE

S

herwin "Menace" Jeremiah, born on 02 November 1979, entered into the industry in 2000 as the lead vocalist and writer for Treason (3Suns). The trio made a huge impact in the industry having several hits such as Dat Eh Nuttin (On de Promenade), Kama Sutra and By The Bar. They brought a dynamic sound by combining rude boy soca, with classic calypso and dub vibes. In 2012 the lyricist decided to begin a solo career and now goes by the name M1 aka Menace; stating that M1 signifies a new stage in his life and in his musical journey. ET&T caught up with the singer for a Chit Chat. ET&T: What can we expect from M1 between now and carnival 2016? M1: I already released five songs for the season. Two singles (All Ah Dem and Soca We Say) and three on Riddims (Buss Up Riddim, Orchestra Riddim and the RR Riddim) I’m also working on an album to release to the public, possibly after carnival. ET&T: Can we look forward to any major collaborations? M1: I’m currently looking forward to release a track with Destra. We’ve been working on a collab for some time, so you guys can look out for that. I also am working on a surprise collaboration. ET&T: Tell us more about your solo career? M1: As much as I enjoyed being in a group (3 Suns), we wanted to explore solo careers. It’s not that much different because I used to write my own music and was the lead vocalist for the group, however I would say that I do enjoy having more of the creative control and freedom now. ET&T: What was some of your highlights within the

past 5 years? M1: I would definitely say being able to perform at Machel Monday two years in a row, also, my performance for the International Soca Monarch Semi Finals. I’m looking forward to doing it again this year. ET&T: Who are your biggest musical influences? M1: Firstly, I would have to say

the Mighty Shadow. Cro-Cro, Machel Montano, Bounty Killa, Bob Marley… I do have a couple more, but I’ll leave it as that. ET&T: Tell us about the process of writing your music. M1: I really like to vibes on the melody or instrumental first. Once a chorus comes to mind – it doesn’t take much for me to finish the song.

ET&T: When it’s all said and done, what do you want people to say about your contribution to the arts? M1: I really want people to connect with my music and my distinctive style. When they look back a couple of years from now, I want them to say that I helped with the elevation of not just soca music but music on a whole.

playing football. Unfortunately I am too busy to go the gym so I am just doing it jail style… sit ups and push-ups… just really working on my core because my metabolism is high. Men can develop a tummy which doesn’t look too presentable on the stage as an artiste so I am just looking to regain that six pack.

ernal Roberts emerged from under his father’s legendary shadow to become one of the most prolific songwriters and producers in the industry. Last year he jumped full-on into the performance game as well. Now, Roberts is aiming to take his talents to the next level. ET&T caught up with him for an interview. ET&T: How was Carnival 2015? KR: It was an eye-opening experience for me... I transitioned from being a musician in the background with Machel and producing to being a vocalist. I thought it would have been a little easier, but it was really tough. However, it was necessary. I was thankful for my downfalls because my downfalls made me realize how to stand up. Moving on we learn from all the mistakes that we make, we try to do the good things better and all the bad things… we try to eliminate them. It could have actually been worse. After God, a good team, support from the fans and good people around me I was able to make it through. I made it to the Soca Monarch finals for the first time ever as a singer after previously winning it in the power category with Machel and with JW and Blaze for ‘Palance’ (as a writer/ producer). ET&T: Tell us about your offerings this year… KR: Because of the short season and the level of the soca industry right now there isn’t much room for airplay on the radio for upcoming artistes like myself. I therefore decided to go with two tracks for the season. ‘Make Sure’ is a nice groovy track which has been doing ok thus far, but my focus is on ‘Legacy’ which was written and produced by myself with the assistance of 1st Klase. That should

be the song to really do it for me. It is really close to my heart and dear to my creative soul. The song is actually saying that when you go to a party, when you go to a fete, you want to leave a legacy! You want to mash up the place and get on bad and people must know that you were there! If there was a carnival hall of fame you would want to be inducted in it as a true feter, a true masquerader, a true party goer … a true Carnival disciple. From another perspective everyone wants to leave a legacy. In your own way you want to be remembered on this judgement earth. ET&T: Is the concept behind the song in any way linked to your continued attempt to carry on your father’s legacy? KR: Well I am carrying on my father’s legacy and while doing so I am leaving my own. Everybody will always watch me as Kitchener’s son. I cannot run away from that. Whatever I am doing in the music industry, it will always shed light as a reminder that I am Kitchener’s son. ET&T: Have you worked on any other projects for this Carnival?

KR: Not really. This year I was on a kind of ‘selfie’ mission because over the years I have been working with everybody from Machel to the smallest artiste and everybody in between. So I decided to take a little time off and reflect on myself and see if I could establish this singing career that I have embarked on. ET&T: So you haven’t written for anyone? KR: I only wrote one song for a guy named Bling Fox, an upcoming artiste. I like helping young artistes to develop their career. Bling Fox is a unique character and he has an unfading belief in himself. I love his attitude and I therefore decided to shed some light on his career. I wrote a song for him named ‘Sampath’. ET&T: Is there a possibility that you may work with Machel Montano again? KR: Yes it’s possible. Anything is possible after God. ET&T: How are you preparing for the short season? KR: Well health and fitness are very important in this industry. I am trying to work on my cardio by

ET&T: Some radio DJs and probable masqueraders have been saying that ‘Legacy’ can potentially win the road march this year… What do you think? KR: I believe that ‘Legacy’ has all of the necessary ingredients to take masqueraders across the stage, but at the end of the day it is the people’s decision. Don’t rule out a more up-tempo contribution to the pool of road march contenders though. There is still room for surprises! Given my vast experience and wide connections you never know! ET&T: What is your main focus for Carnival 2016? KR: I am just hoping to succeed generally. All artistes dream of that song that will ‘buss’ them stamp their name in a way to make them solidified, grounded and established as an artiste. I am trying to achieve that with the song ‘Legacy’. I want to stamp my foot and make it known that Kernal Roberts is singing officially. He is an artiste. He can bring it… not just write songs or produce and play songs, but he can seriously carry on his dad’s legacy! ET&T: Any message for your fans? KR: I appreciate you believing in me and accepting the fact that I have taken on the challenge to carry on Lord Kitchener’s legacy and at the same time form my own. I want you to know that after God I will not let you down. I will continue to try my best till I take my last breath to continue to carry out my purpose which is producing and creating music to the highest level of my ability that will play in every corner of the Universe!

as those premium all-inclusives, but it was far from a ghetto fete. The crowd was noticeably younger this year, so maybe we can expect a lot of young first-time masqueraders playing with the band as well. Time will tell how it shapes up on the road, but if the vibe at the event is anything to go by, then we can expect playing mas with Tribe to be epic. Enjoy the pics.

SOKA IN MOKA XVII

he seventeenth ediT tion of the popular early-Carnival event

Soka in Moka took place at Trinity Courts on January 3rd. Questions of a short season and the financial recession created doubts about the success of the event. However, all doubts were allayed when gates opened and people came pouring into the all-inclusive. Speaking of all-inclusive, there were all types of food and drinks available to patrons and they did not hesitate to oblige. The entertainment was also top-notch with several soca bands hitting the stage and not showing an ounce of rust. ET&T was there for the action and here we share a a few photos. Check our Facebook page for more.

AURORA

EVENTS EXTRA ventia’s annual carnival event entitled Aurora was one of the first fetes of the shortened season. Hosted at a scenic seaside location in ChaguarE amas, the premium breakfast party did not disappoint with a nice mix of entertainment and a large variety of sumptuous brunch options. By the looks of it, the fete was a Big People Party as the mix was more on the mature side. However, that doesn’t mean the patrons did not know how to get down and dirty on the dance floor. Here is a sneak peek in our Events Extra.

PULL YOUR PANTS UP

t’s 2016, so the same stuIbeing pid mistakes that were made in 2015 can’t be made in 2016. Sagging pants ain’t wukkin.

Dude… you can’t use your underwear as an accessory to match your shoes. At least we can only assume that is what you were thinking. Then again, we doubt he was thinking. It’s 2016, pull your pants up. The sad thing is you are spoiling a good photo for those two beautiful ladies.

The “rabbit ears” sign by the photo bomber was a start, but it certainly wasn’t punishment enough. How dare a grown man dress so irresponsibly? A gamble at wackiness for attention and laughs cost this boxerbaring offender a stint in fashion detention.

INTO THE JUNGLE I

n 2016 movies seem to be going back to their roots (Literally tree roots). There are a lot of films which feature natural green backdrops. These are two of them.

The Legend of Tarzan Alexander Skarsgård swings into action as Tarzan as Warner Bros. and director David Yates team up to bring Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic tale back to the big screen. Samuel L. Jackson and Christoph Waltz co-star. The Jungle Book Rudyard Kipling's beloved story returns to the screen in this Walt Disney Pictures production from director Jon Favreau (Elf, Iron Man). The show incorporates CGI animals with human thespians. Lupita Nyong'o, Scarlett Johansson and Idris Elba join Neel Sethi (Mowgli) for this movie that is sure to generate lots of interest. 28 ET&T • JANUARY, 2016 • www.amgtt.com
