TOMOSYNTHESIS

IS A WORD YOU NEED TO

KNOW

Book your time online for a 3-D mammogram, the latest in early breast cancer detection. Breast tomosynthesis is an innovative, FDA-approved digital technology that helps your physician detect smaller tumors sooner – at the earliest stages of breast cancer. The 3-D imaging capability of tomosynthesis enables radiologists to see “inside” the breast, resulting in improved accuracy in screening for and pinpointing lesions.

A Revolutionary Way to School

If

you’re the only one in class, can’t the teacher teach to your pace of learning? Is it necessary to raise your hand? Does lecture look more like conversation in a one-to-one classroom? It’s hard to imagine a school with classrooms that hold just one student and one teacher – but they exist! In fact, a new Fusion Academy just opened in Sugar Land serving the Greater Fort Bend area. COVER STORY

Fusion Academy is a private middle and high school where all classes are one-to-one: one student and one teacher per classroom. This unique education model was born over 28 years ago out of frustration with the status quo and the passionate belief in the power of positive relationships to unlock academic potential. But Fusion’s school model isn’t solely about the smallest class size possible; it’s about helping kids flourish not only academically, but emotionally and socially, too.

History of an Education Revolution

In order to understand how this school model works, let’s first talk about its conception. In 1989, Michelle Rose Gilman, founder of Fusion Academy, was fresh out of college and ready to change the world of education. Shortly after college, the therapeutic school she was teaching at closed without notice for lack of funding. She began to realize that the traditional school models, both public and private, she’d seen were not helping the kids she wanted to serve. It was then she

Teachers work to first build trust with their students as a foundation for learning. Fusion Academy believes in the model of “love, motivate, teach.” and a small staff began one-to-one tutoring out of her garage. As her services grew in demand, so did traffic in her neighborhood, forcing her to move to a building in Solana Beach, California. Gilman said, “We still tutored and mentored kids who, no matter what we did, no matter how hard we worked, still were not thriving in traditional schools.” With that challenge in mind, she took a leap of faith and created a school she knew would really work and change lives. Fusion Academy’s first full-time high school student started in 2001. “We modeled our school around the needs of students who could not find success in the traditional educational model,” Gilman said, “whether they struggled with learning differences, ADHD, social issues or simply needed a flexible schedule so that they could pursue their outside interests.” All Fusion classes were, and still are, taught one-to-one. This completely individualized way of doing school has started an education revolution from this first Solana Beach campus and has swept across the country. In 2008, Fusion Academy’s success in Solana Beach gained the attention of a private firm, American Education Group (now Fusion Education Group). Gilman partnered with the group with the vision of taking Fusion Academy across the

country and beyond. Since 2010, Fusion Academy has grown to more than 35 campuses in eight states across the country.

One-to-One Works So you may be asking how one-to-one classrooms work. Visually, you might think it’s a small office with a couple of desks in it. But it’s adorned with that teacher’s subject matter and personal interest décor. It has soft lighting, and it feels cozy. Students and teachers spend their 50 minute class period together working through the material at a pace that works for the student. Teachers work to first build trust with their students as a foundation for learning. Fusion Academy believes in the model of “love, motivate, teach.” Students aren’t going to care about the material if they don’t feel cared for by the teacher. A mentor relationship naturally forms, and these positive relationships are what makes Fusion work. Students can’t hide in a one-to-one classroom. They aren’t competing with 40 other students to be heard. They aren’t afraid to speak up or be wrong, because it’s just the student and the teacher. And there’s no possibility of falling through the cracks. This is why one-to-one works.

Here’s what some students have to say: “At other schools, you’re just another number. I feel like here you’re actually a person.” - Joe, Fusion Warner Center student

“Having a one-on-one setting in the classroom, I felt my class was personalized so well for me that it was not only easy for me to succeed but easy for me to thoroughly enjoy. Since my first time stepping into Fusion, I have felt encouraged by each faculty member to test my strengths and discover new ones.” - Caroline London, Fusion South Bay student

“Previously, I was enrolled in a school that robbed me of my individuality. At Fusion, the loving and motivational environment spurs me to be optimistic about the future. It provided the security that proceeded in accumulating all that was robbed from me.” - Jana Bondurant, Fusion Houston Galleria student

Every student’s path is different, and Fusion partners with students to help them achieve their goals, whatever they may be. Many Fusion students go on to attend a college or university, while some pursue a trade school, gap year or another option. Fusion has post-secondary counselors available to help and programs and courses to support students’ goals. While other schools may be cutting their art and music programs, Fusion has a robust roster of electives for students to explore and pursue their creativity. They also have a wellness program that includes art and music, along with physical wellness and healthy habits. Students learn healthy selfexpression and how to deal effectively with stress, anxiety, low self-esteem, body image issues and social pressures. It is this equal focus on the academic, social and emotional wellbeing of students as individuals that makes Fusion work.

Connect with Fusion

Curt Coffey and Christina Chancoco in Fusion Sugar Land’s recording studio.

Beyond the Classroom You may be asking how kids have social interaction in a one-to-one environment. Student-led, Fusion-supported social interaction happens where it should: outside the classroom. Fusion Academy has fun nights, student interest groups and other organizations for students to learn and grow together. Homework doesn’t go home. Yes, you read that correctly. All students complete their homework in one of Fusion’s Homework Café® spaces on campus. Here, they have access to teacher help and must be checked out before leaving campus for the day. No more nightly homework battles!

What Are Fusion Students Like? They are bright, but they feel like they don’t “fit” at a traditional school. Fusion kids, simply put, aren’t flourishing in a conventional environment. Every student is different, and while it’s impossible to put students into categories, Fusion generally serves kids with the following backgrounds: those challenged with attention deficit disorder, learning differences or anxiety; gifted learners; professional athletes or actors needing a flexible schedule; or students who just plain aren’t thriving in their current environment.

The Value of Fusion All students and their families value Fusion’s unique program for a number of reasons. Fusion practices Mastery Learning, which means students must master a lesson before moving on to the next. So, if a student is struggling with a topic, the teacher works with them until it clicks. And if that student is a natural when it comes to another topic, they might advance to the next lesson early.

KCAM Receives Annual End of Year Donation from Fort Bend County Commissioner Andy Meyers

Andy Meyers, Ana Villaronga-Roman and Alfredo Gisholt in front of Meyers’ Untitled painting on paper.

Fort Bend Commissioner Precinct 3 Andy Meyers attended the Opening Reception of For the Love of Paper, the KCAM Contemporary Art Museum Fort Bend’s first international art exhibition showcasing the large works on paper by Mexican artist Alfredo Gisholt. On this occasion, Meyers presented Museum Director Ana Villaronga-Roman with a $2,500 donation from Fort Bend Charities, a charity he founded to help non-profits in his precinct. “Commissioner Meyers understands the importance of supporting the arts and Fort Bend County’s only art museum. He realizes the benefits the arts bring to the economic development of our area, the future of our community, as well as the significance the arts have on our children’s education,” said Villaronga-Roman. Meyers founded the Literary Fine Arts Show and Parade almost at the same time as Villaronga-Roman founded KCAM. “Not every child will grow up to be an athlete. Some are born with innate artistic talents that must be fostered and strengthened,” said Meyers. “Our community should recognize that and help support it. I urge others, residents and businesses as a whole, to consider giving to our many art organizations during this time. KCAM is there for us to enjoy, visit and learn. We owe them our thanks and support.” An exquisite curvature of works on paper created by Gisholt at KCAM’s request, For the Love of Paper runs through Sunday, January 15th at KCAM, located at 805 Avenue B in Katy. “Empowering expression on paper is what Alfredo’s work is. The abstraction that occurs takes paper beyond its limits,” said Mariana Valdes Debes, an art psychologist and curator active in Mexico City and Houston who is in charge of traveling the exhibition later in 2017. High School HOT SHOT Meet Wade Wilson

A

senior at Katy High School, Wade Wilson has established a reputation as an excellent student and athlete. He has devoted his high school career to balancing academics, sports and extracurricular activities. With so much to offer the school community, Wade is respected by his teachers and peers and continues to amaze and impress everyone with all of his accomplishments. Outstanding in academics, Wade is in the top 12 percent of the senior class and ranks 88th out of 738 students. A member of the National Honor Society and an Academic Honor Role recepient every year, Wade is a determined individual. “I live by the quote, ‘You can do anything if you put your mind to it.’ If I truly put all of my effort and all of my heart into a goal that I have, then I know I will eventually accomplish my objective as long as I never give up,” Wade said. “I hold myself to very high standards and believe that this is why I am able to maintain a 4.0 grade point average and strive to become the best person that I can possibly be.” Wade’s forte is wrestling, and he has played the sport all four years of high school. As a junior, he achieved third place at the District Championship and fifth place at the Regionals III Championship. He also placed fourth in the Texas Outlaw Tournament at Allen High School. The Katy Wrestlers started their 2016-2017 season with a big win against Brother Martin, Lousiana and Mayde Creek. Wade won both of his matches at Katy High School. He also came out a champion at the Cinco Ranch Big 12 Invitational tournament with three wins. He is undefeated at this time. Wade’s favorite teacher is Coach Vincent Lowe. “He is a great teacher, coach and role model and has taught me how to overcome obstacles, how to push myself to be the best that I can be and how to break through mental boundaries. He showed me that if I truly put my mind to something, then I would most definitely be able to accomplish anything. Coach Lowe also has taught me how to have discipline and to completely focus on the task at

Wade

hand by getting rid of outside distractions and by helping me to hold myself accountable. He truly is the best teacher that a student could have.” In addition to his academic strengths and talent for wrestling, Wade is a leader. He said, “I like to help others be the best they can possibly be, so helping others just happens to make their day and mine too. It is easy for me to lead, and being able to help others in their goals is very fulfilling for me and helps me to know that I am doing the right things with what I am good at. “The sports at Katy High School have helped develop me into who I am today. I have learned to be disciplined and how to motivate myself to do the best that I can educationally, outside of school and in the sport I participate in. Wrestling in particular has had a great effect on me and has helped me to push past what I thought I could do. The sport has truly pushed me mentally and physically to my limits, hence shaping me into the hardworking student-athlete I am today.” Wade aspires to attend Texas A&M University and major in engineering. Congratulations on your undeniable drive and talent Wade, and we look forward to watching you make an impact in this world in your future.

Why the Spike of Divorce Filings in January?

2016 Celebrity Paws Gala Benefiting Citizens for Animal Protection November 12, 2016 • Royal Sonesta Hotel

By Nancy L. Rommelmann, Family Law Attorney

S

tatistics show that filing for divorce is significantly higher in the month of January. Reasons for this include not disrupting the “family” holidays during November and December. It is common for people to reflect on their lives at the end of a year, and at times, they perceive their unhappiness is attributable to their spouse and seek divorce to remove their pain. Some counselors advise that the best time to seek a divorce is when you have a clear understanding about what your needs are and who you really are. If you partake in addictive behavior such as alcohol, drugs (prescriptive or illegal) or pornography, then likely, your spouse is not your problem. You need to work through your issues with a competent counselor and then assess your marital relationship to honestly determine if it truly is the source of your unhappiness. Then, determine whether filing for divorce is the right path for you. My recommendation when considering divorce is to first put serious effort into rebuilding your marriage. It is more rewarding and likely cheaper! How do you rebuild your marriage? For starters, break old habits, start new routines and rebuild your friendship.

Create a list of all of your assets and debts with supporting documents. Take an inventory of all personal property.

Make a list of all separate property. This is property you had prior to marriage or property that was inherited.

4

If you don’t have much of a credit history, start your own credit history and open credit cards in your name only.

5

Get a copy of your credit report to insure that your spouse is not dissipating marital assets on significant others. If you are concerned that your soon to be ex-spouse might borrow money in your name, you might want to sign up for a credit monitoring service.

New Year, New You Ways To Create Healthy Days

R

ing in the New Year with a resolution that you can stick with. Contrary to popular belief, overall health is more than just being free of disease or chronic illness. Other factors, such as access to fresh foods, neighborhood walkability and public safety, to name a few, can help cultivate more healthy days.

Respondents to an Aetna Foundation survey said local aspects have a large effect on health. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also acknowledges that a person’s zip code is a good indicator of an individual’s health and longevity. However, there are small, everyday steps one can make for a fresh, healthy start this year, such as these five easy tips.

1

Incorporate 30 minutes of exercise. Forty-nine percent of Americans say they exercise to improve their overall health, according to the survey. To beat the rush, head to the gym early in the morning. Although it can be difficult to visit your local gym or recreational center before sunrise, getting at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day can not only start the day off strong, but also help you feel more energized and aid in maintaining a healthy weight. Other ways to get daily exercise include taking part in sports, riding your bike on a path close to home or walking in a neighborhood park.

2

Drink more water and plan meals. It’s easy to splurge on food and drink during the holiday season, but the new year is a good time to swap candy canes and pumpkin pie for fruits, veggies and water. Planning meals ahead of time can help you incorporate healthier food options into your diet. Drinking water throughout the day instead of sugary sodas and juices helps your body regulate temperature, lubricates and cushions joints, protects the spinal cord and sensitive tissues and helps prevent weight gain.

3

Step away for small breaks. Your overall health also includes your emotional health and well-being. More than eight out of 10 Americans surveyed said their mood and stress level has an equal impact on their health as the food they consume. Life can get busy and overwhelming as you jump back into a post-holiday routine, but simple acts like taking a few deep breaths, standing and stretching or taking a walk can help calm the mind and relieve stress.

4

Put your smartphone and body on sleep mode. The amount of sleep you get can have a direct impact on your mood and health. Sixty-four percent of respondents said they need at least eight hours of sleep to have a healthy day. Add reading a few new books to your yearly goals to help you unplug from electronics an hour or more before going to bed, and ensure you get the rest you need.

5

Get involved. More than nine out of 10 Americans said they are willing to take action to create a healthier environment. Using a strong support system of friends and family, you can help each other ensure 2017 is a healthy year. Organize ways to stick with your resolutions as a group, such as scheduling a weekly walk, planning a neighborhood recycling contest, registering for a fitness event or signing up to volunteer. More than what happens in the doctor’s office impacts your health. Incorporating these small changes can help you achieve your goals and lead to a healthier and happier 2017. Filling the Nutrient Gap with IV Vitamin Therapy Nutritional deficiencies are a widespread problem that affects countless people. Deficiencies in key vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other nutrients are associated with many chronic diseases and symptoms including fatigue, insomnia, weight gain, poor memory, recurring infections, migraines, muscle and joint aches and much more. Unfortunately, we live in an age of processed, genetically modified and nutritionally deficient foods. As people age, their bodies become less able to absorb the nutrients from the foods and supplements they ingest. Environmental toxins and prescription medications can also deplete bodies of vital nutrients, and poor gut health prevents people from properly absorbing them. For these reasons and more, it is vitally important to supplement diets with critical nutrients for health. IV Therapy is a method of feeding vitamins, minerals and other natural substances directly into the bloodstream. The major advantage of this is bypassing the digestive system, which enables a patient to receive 100 percent of the nutrients. Even with a healthy gut, the stomach has a threshold of how much it can absorb, making it impossible to receive larger therapeutic doses of nutrients without bypassing the digestive system. The body can begin to use these nutrients instantly, since there is no wait time for the vitamins to pass through the digestive system. IV therapy is a versatile treatment that can include formulations for a variety of conditions including boosting energy, enhancing the immune system, recovering from illness, relieving migraines, preventing disease and much more. New Year, New You The Gap

The gap between where you are and where you want to be is called frustration. Frustration is eliminated by education and action. What do you need to know to get to the next level? Make a list and start learning. What books do you need to read? What seminars do you need to attend? If it is a personal fitness goal, figure out where to get the education you need, whether it is fat loss, muscle building, cardio fitness or something else. Next, take action. Five frogs are sitting on a log next to a pond on a hot day. One frog decides to jump in and cool off. How many frogs are left? Five, because deciding and doing are two different things. Education plus action yields results. All of the business knowledge, fat loss knowledge or nutrition knowledge won’t help until you get off the couch and do something. It’s not even a matter of working hard or working smart; it’s a matter of working right. Close the gap and get to the next level. Ryan Kobermann, CSCS, owner of ESN Health – Personal Fitness Training and ESN Healthy Kitchen, along with the entire professional team of certified personal trainers at ESN Health, can help make this happen! ESN Health has many options available, including customized personal training, nutritional coaching, small group classes and nutritious and healthy meals to go. ESN Health clients receive a customized and comprehensive lifestyle plan, which includes a customized nutritional plan and exercise program synergistically working together to help clients reach their goals and expectations. ESN Health now has two locations: one in Cinco Ranch and one in Firethorne. For more information, call 281-395-0827 or visit www.ESNHealth.com. See ad on page 25.

Detoxification The health of a family is very important. In today’s world, a major threat to good health is the exposure to the millions of toxins found in the food supply and the environment. Toxins include chemicals, additives and preservatives in food, chemicals in personal care and cleaning products, air pollution, car exhaust, pesticides, prescription drugs and genetically modified foods. These toxins build up in the body over time and cause chronic and degenerative disease. Some of the common symptoms of toxic overload are surprising: memory problems, lack of energy, irritability, unexplained weight gain, allergies, psoriasis, abnormal body odor, coated tongue or bad breath, headaches, back pain, joint pain, digestive problems, brittle nails and hair, depressed moods and difficulty sleeping. The body is constantly working to detoxify itself; however, when it is overwhelmed with an abundance of harmful toxins, it may need a little assistance. Here are some steps that families can take today to help detoxify: • Eat a clean, healthy diet of organic fruits and vegetables. • Exercise. Get outside and sweat! • Eliminate junk food and processed foods from your diet. • Get a good night’s sleep, which helps repair and restore the body. • Drink pure, filtered water. • Supplement with a quality multivitamin. • Take vitamin C, an antioxidant. • Eat smaller portions, and go meatless one day per week. Instill these good habits in your family today so that you can all enjoy a healthy, happy life! For more information on Hotze Health & Wellness Center, visit www.hotzehwc.com. Ring in the New Year with a New You From Cinco Ranch Face and Body Plastic Surgery One of the hallmarks of the Cinco Ranch Face and Body experience is the personal analysis that Dr. Eric Humble and his staff provide each patient, the goal of which is to arrive at the best solution for that patient alone. People come with their goals, and Cinco Ranch Face and Body develops a plan to address those needs and wants in the way that best serves the patient and provides the highest level of personal satisfaction. The variety of tools and techniques available to Dr. Humble and the staff make it possible to customize literally every patient need. One of the newest – and amazingly effective – treatments Cinco Ranch Face and Body offers is the Vampire Facial. Kim Kardashian brought it to national attention, and it is available now at Cinco Ranch Face and Body. Dr. Lin Humble, wife of Cinco Ranch Face and Body founder Dr. Eric Humble, has employed this technique and found it to be her personal favorite of the less invasive techniques at the center. She has dubbed it her personal “fountain of youth.” The Vampire Facial is essentially a three-step process that “reminds” the body of what it is able to do naturally. Combining the restorative healing functions of the body with the introduction of the plasma-rich platelets (PRPs), the factor-rich “reminder” allows the reintroduction of collagen and fatty tissue to produce smoothness, and the “vampire effect” begins right away. There is an immediate and noticeable difference, but the longterm effects are evident within two to three weeks of the procedure. Stuttering 101

EXPERT: Danielle Devore, speech language pathologist at Texas Children’s Hospital. Syllable repetition: Repeating a syllable within a word in a sentence. Blocking: Trying to get a syllable or sound out but getting stuck, making no noise. Prolongation: Holding the first sound of a word or syllable, with difficulty moving to the next sound. Speech Therapist Julie Wahrenberger works with fiveyear-old Jennifer Melgoza. Photo by A. Kramer.

Q:

WHAT IS STUTTERING?

Stuttering is a communication disorder involving disruptions in the production of speech sounds, also called “disfluencies,” in a person’s speech. If you listen to the speech of those around you, you may notice that no one speaks without disfluencies. For example, many people use repetitive words in their sentences, such as “um” or “uh.” Typically, these disfluencies are not a true stutter. The difference between moments of disfluencies and stuttering is the amount of tension associated with the moment of stuttering. Many children have secondary behaviors and tension when they stutter, such as eye blinks, facial grimacing, changes in pitch or loudness, negative reaction or frustration, reduced speaking, word or situational avoidance. Physical tension or secondary behaviors with disfluencies is a true stutter. These are the common types of disfluencies found in both normal and disordered speech: Single word repetition: Repeating a single word in a sentence. Phrase repetition: Repeating a phrase within a sentence.

30

Q:

WHAT CAUSES STUTTERING?

The cause of stuttering is unknown, but experts agree it is probably caused by a combination of factors such as genetics, language growth and environmental factors. Recent research suggests that most children who stutter have a family member who also stutters or stuttered as a child. Stuttering can also occur during the preschool years as children are learning the rules of language. This rapid growth in language from immature messages like “Mommy juice” into longer sentences like “Mommy, can I have juice please?” may produce stuttering. It is also believed the language environment can aggravate stuttering in a child who has a tendency to stutter. These factors include parental attitudes and expectations toward communication with the child, the child’s level of speech and language development, stressful life events and anxiety of stuttering.

Q:

HOW MANY CHILDREN STUTTER?

According to the Stuttering Foundation, approximately five percent of all children go through a period of stuttering. It is also normal for a child to go back and forth between moments of fluent speech and stuttering. In general, if a

JANUARY 2017 l TO ADVERTISE: 281.690.4242 or www.absolutelykaty.com

child stutters on more than 10 words out of 100, this may indicate the child has a true stutter.

Q:

WHAT ARE EARLY SIGNS OF STUTTERING?

There are no early signs of stuttering. There are factors that may increase the chances of a child stuttering, such as family history of stuttering, language growth and the environment in which the child is speaking.

Q:

WHEN SHOULD YOU SEEK HELP FOR YOUR CHILD?

If a child is over the age of 3 ½ and has stuttered for longer than six months, consider seeking a speech and language evaluation. Between 75 and 80 percent of children who begin to stutter will eventually stop within 12 to 24 months without therapy. Many children who “recover” from stuttering do so within months of the time their stuttering started.

Q:

WHAT CAN PARENTS DO TO HELP THEIR CHILD WHO STUTTERS?

The best way parents can help their child who stutters is try to speak to their child in simple, short sentences, pausing slightly before responding. When a child is talking, try not to interrupt or finish his sentences. It is important that the child feels like he has enough time to talk and that he is being heard. Also, when talking with a child who stutters, try to minimize the noise level and the competition for your attention. It is also important to work closely with the child’s speech and language pathologist. In therapy, the child will learn strategies to reduce stuttering. These strategies need to be reinforced at home and school. Parents also need to inform all who have contact with the child about the importance of using smooth, relaxed speech when talking to the child. Visit www.stutteringhelp.org for more information about stuttering. Visit westcampus.texaschildrens.org or call 832-227-1000 for more information about Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus.

Houston Methodist West Hospital Redesignated for Excellence in Nursing

CONTEMPORARY JAPANESE FINE DINING

Houston Methodist West Hospital has achieved Pathway to Excellence redesignation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The Pathway to Excellence designation identifies the elements of interprofessional work environments where nurses can flourish and feel empowered. The designation substantiates nursing job satisfaction at Houston Methodist West and identifies it as one of the best places to work. The honor encourages other nurses to join their colleagues in this desirable and nurturing environment. “We pride ourselves on our delivery of unparalleled safety, quality, service and innovation to our community,” said Vicki Brownewell, chief nursing officer of Houston Methodist West Hospital. “Our entire staff puts limitless effort toward keeping our patients safe and happy, and together we work hard to maintain a healthy and fulfilling work environment.” The Pathway to Excellence designation is granted based on the confirmed presence of the six Pathway to Excellence Practice Standards: shared decisionmaking, leadership, safety, quality, well-being and professional development. For an organization to earn the Pathway to Excellence distinction, it must successfully undergo a thorough review process that documents foundational quality initiatives in creating a positive work environment as defined by nurses and supported by research. These initiatives must be integrated in the facility’s practices, policies and culture. Nurses in the organization validate the presence of the criteria in the organization through participation in a completely voluntary and confidential online survey.
