Through a career of ups and downs, Marion Barry garnered the respect and love of countless residents of the Nation’s Capital. It was an honor to have served under him as a member of his cabinet. While many from outside DC may focus on the negative, it is the positive, productive impact of his life that those within DC and those of us who worked with him will always remember and honor as his legacy. As a leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee advancing the cause of civil rights to the millions of tax dollars he put into job training, employment programs, senior centers, youth & social-welfare programs, African-American owned businesses and the development of top-level administrators, Marion Barry worked tirelessly to make real the promise of home rule and real the promise of a brighter tomorrow for citizens of the District of Columbia! - Dr. Barbara Nicholson
