A word from a little bird...

I am sitting here wondering where the last Six months of the year have gone!! I can’t quite believe it’s school holidays again, but it is, so what better time to let you in on our little secret we have been working on behind the scenes!

As a mum to Three small children , I understand their thirst for learning and discovery is so important and needs to be nurtured, I also get that time together as a family is so crucial in building lifelong memories, teaching them the value of relationships and creating an important sense of being.

That’s why A Little Bird was created, to ensure Families are Happy, Healthy and Active, providing what’s on, things to do and articles covering everything to do with families and kids, we touch on subjects considered controversial, as we see a need for these important topics to be discussed!

The A Little Bird…Told Me e-zine has been created by myself and a dedicated team of people, who also share a love of all things families. Our goal is to change the world, one step at a time, create happy families and build a strong, loving community. This is our chance to give back to others, to unite with other parents, grandparents, carers and eliminate judgement and hostility, instead supporting one another on this often times rollercoaster of a journey called Raising Kids!

This is our First issue, we have lived and breathed it for the last few months, it will evolve and it will be great!

This is an e-zine for you our community, your contributions and suggestions are important and sought after; I would love for you to get involved!!

When you need your clothes to dry faster in the dryer throw in a dry fluffy towel to absorb some of the moisture !

Chrome looking a little tired ? Simply wet the matt side (not shiney side) of some tin foil with water and rub the chrome—it will take away any grime and return your shine in no time !

To help with linen cupboard organisation … Store your doona cover, a sheet set and matching pillow cases in the pillow case that coordinates with the doona—you won’t have to go hunting through the cupboard to dress the bed

Remove stems from Tomatoes and store them upside down to prolong their life in the fridge !

To undo pesky plastic packaging that everything seems to be packed in these days, try using a can opener to open the packaging without risk of frustration induced injuries !

Sick of your bananas going brown too quickly ? Separate them and wrap the stem of each one in some cling wrap to prolong their yellow life a bit more. Still going brown before they get gobbled up ? Always have a banana cake packet mix spare in the pantry to save wasting them !

Clothes drawers a little smelly ? Buy an extra packet of yummy smelling, individually wrapped soap in your next grocery shop and pop a cake in each drawer for lovely smelling clothes !

Did you know you can use a water bottle as a freshness seal for open packets in your pantry—carefully slice the end off an empty water bottle, scrunch the opened end of the packet you want to seal through the neck of the bottle so the end is coming out of the mouth of the bottle. Fold the part of the packet you have just threaded through back over the outside of the bottle and reapply the lid and screw shut.

There is nothing better to get rid of those horrible rings of “ICK” in a bath tub than a mixture of vinegar and washing-up liquid. Spray it on liberally, leave for 15 minutes and then simply wipe away. Repeat leaving for longer if necessary.

DIY WRAPPING PAPER

In an effort to reduce our environmental footprint, and create some personalised paper to wrap gifts in - for that extra special touch - we recently got the kids to use some stencils, paint and sponges to create some masterpieces.

I laid out an old sheet over the table, we laid out some large sheets of paper (we used an off-cut roll we were given but anything large will do) and I cut some cheap car wash sponges in half (that we can reuse many times). I popped some paint onto plastic plates (again, they can be washed and re-used) and the kids chose some stencils and sponged away. After the stencilling it turned into free-form art with the sponges and their hands.

The end result is some gorgeous paper that our friends and family will adore - some are so cute we could also frame them if we wanted.

All up it took 30 mins, I threw them in the bath afterwards and it took me 5 minutes to pack up and clean, so not a cumbersome activity at all.

….and how You are trying to be Super Parent!

You already are a super parent so stop trying to be more than that.

You do not need to be crafty, bake, organise activities, work away, work from home AND stay at home. You are parenting little children; you are already super in their eyes. Don’t compare yourself to other mums and dads who you think have it all together, because they are most likely looking at you and thinking the same thing.

You cram too much into your day.

Find a plan that works for you. One activity in the morning and one in the afternoon, and don’t plan anything else that day. You have little kids. Half an hour at the playground in the morning is considered an outing. Don’t forget it’s harder to run from event to event during the day. Cramming too much into your day will just leave you stressed and tired. Also stop and think do I need to do this today?

You are saying “ I should” way too much.

“I should” is the devil in our heads. You shouldn’t do anything.

You either need to do something or you want to do something.

The “I should” is really a gateway to all the other things on this list.

Stop saying “should” and life will relax a bit more. Focus on the needs.

You aren’ t giving yourself any “ me” time.

Are you making time for your kids, your partner, your friends, your family, but not you? Than an important part of you is going unfulfilled. We all know how great we feel when we get some “me” time in but so easily dismiss its importance. Try to get it anyway you can, be it a few minutes every day, one night a week, a few hours over the weekend. Plan ahead, pencil your “me” time in the family calendar and stick to it, don’t feel guilty for taking care of yourself.

You and your partner aren’ t getting any child free time.

This goes with the above one, but is not the same. “Me” time is just for you. “Couple” time is for you and your partner and is just as important. Having child free time lets you relax to a level almost reminiscent of before you had children. You get to have uninterrupted adult conversations, reconnect and remember that you are more than just parents, love each other and have each other’s backs in this crazy new world.

You aren’ t eating properly.

Are you making your kids meals and snacks, making sure they are eating healthy balanced meals and then standing at the counter eating spoonful’s of peanut butter ? We need to eat balanced meals throughout the day too. Running on low energy can lead you to a severe case of hangry, (when one gets angry due to hunger). We have less patience when we are hungry and less energy to make it through till the 7pm bedtime hour.

You aren’ t following your passions in life.

Think back to before you had kids, and recall your passions in life. What were they? Did you love to paint, run, listen to live music, surf, travel, or scuba dive? Whatever it was, it doesn’t have to stop now that you have kids. It might seem impossible, but look around, talk to others and you may find a way to bring your passions back into your life. Passion is what makes our blood pump and lets us feel alive.

You aren’ t allowing yourself to “ do nothing”

time.

Down time is just as important as having a social life. And as my husband keeps reminding me, doing nothing means doing nothing, not just doing a few things. You have to be able to recognize that doing nothing for a little while does not make you lazy, it makes you rested and smart. There’s a great quote by John Lennon that I recently came across and just love. He says. “Time you enjoy wasting, was not wasted.” So true.

You are micro thinking too much.

It is very easy to start obsessing over every detail of your children’s lives, especially when you are a new parent, but it still happens on your second, third, fourth…child. In those early days, we are housebound, missing sleep, missing the outside world and our minds can start micro thinking, picking at tiny details instead of seeing life as a big picture. You can obsess over whether your son’s sandwiches should be cut into squares or triangles, or how other mums are cutting their sandwiches or if triangles will turn your son into a delinquent and squares won’t – or you can look at the big picture. Your son has food, and you are eating sandwiches for lunch. Awesome. Next!

You aren’ t drinking enough water.

Not having enough water can lead to many health issues, and one of those is feeling weak and run down.

When you are a parent you don’t have time to feel run down. So drink up, stay hydrated and keep moving.

Don’t forget the kids too. Everyone needs water. Juice is not water. Pop is not water. Coffee is not water.

They have water in them but they are not pure 100% h20. Try filling 3 x one litre bottles of water each morning and keeping them in the fridge. Make it your goal to have them all gone by the end of the day.

You aren’ t letting yourself off the hook.

No one is perfect. We have made mistakes and we will continue to make mistakes, it is the only way we learn how to improve. For some reason when we become parents, our guilt meter goes off the charts. We need to learn to forgive ourselves first. Parenting is a practice after all. You are doing a great job!

It is very easy to put our families first and to forget about ourselves. But a whole family has to be healthy and active, not just the kids, or our partners. Look at your needs and wants; ignore the “should.” Remember to eat and to eat healthy, and don’t forget to drink your water. Find your passions, enjoy quiet time, enjoy child free time, enjoy all your time. Turn your brain off and get outside and enjoy nature. Stop comparing yourself to others and remember we are all in this together. You are already a super mum, so let yourself off the hook.

BALLOONS on a

One of this little birdies favourite things to do is to grab a packet of 100 balloons (which are generally $4.99 at our local bargain store) and blow them up to fill the trampoline. YES you have to have a lot of wind to inflate 100 balloons but if you suck in that department you can always track down a hand pump which will come in handy over a lifetime of parties and all things balloon fun.

A trampoline with netting is essential to keep the balloons contained but if you don’t have a trampoline with net, or indeed a trampoline, this kind of activity can also be done in any enclosed space—just watch out for sharp edges of furniture etc which can become obscured in the balloon madness and cause some nasty bumps.

Obviously the idea of this activity is to combine jumping and the balloons for some crazy colourful chaos but if that’s not enough you can try adding interest with a pool noodle cut in half to play batting games with the balloons, or baskets to play balloon-basketball … we have also drawn a few animals on balloons and then raced to see who can find them the fastest while someone else jumps... really the variations to this activity are limited only by your imagination ! Have a plastic bag handy for balloon casualties along the way to keep little bits out of harms way. All the usual care and safety recommendations with trampolines should be taken with this activity as the balloons add to the excitement factor, particularly when having more than one child on the trampoline at a time.

Our recent packet of balloons lasted a couple of days on the trampoline too so it’s the kind of activity that you can repeat for a while each day.

Out and about in the

GREAT OUTDOORS Our Little Bird team loves getting out and active with the kids … there is so much fresh air and fun to be had in our wonderful corner of the world and we thought we’d share some of our adventures with you every month !

Darlington Parklands, Yarrabilba In case you missed the BUZZ… an awesome new park opened in January this year in new estate Yarrabilba … if you plan to venture out to visit, you won’t be disappointed. A little Ipswich based bird left home at around 8am recently and arrived to an empty park on a beautiful sunny winters day around an hour later (with a petrol stop and a major wrong turn added in for good measure). The words Toddler PARADISE come to mind in describing this park for us … but I’m sure the big kids would LOVE it too. This little birds 2 year old was immediately drawn to the shallow depth waterfalls (which isn’t hard because as you’ll see from the pictures it’s HUGE, it’s multi-tiered and it’s … WET) and splashed and wallowed in delight for a good hour and a half before I begged him to turn his pruned fingers over to the sunlight to dry !

The rest of the playground had plenty to offer to keep him distracted from the water long enough to dry thoroughly—the huge slides and concrete tunnels were a hit, and the music wall appealed to his current “bang on everything as loud as possible” phase. He managed to convince me that we could ride tandem on the double flying fox several times too many, and for once he was so busy on everything else the swings, as cool as they were, did not even rate a second glance from him! We were joined by a few other families during our 3 hour stay but the relaxed feel of such an awesome park on a weekday was a definite highlight—having never been on a weekend I can’t vouch for the same feel when sharing the park with other picnic makers but there certainly seemed to be an abundance of things to keep the kids spread out and occupied including a large open green space, paths for riding and I hear there is a LED light show @night. You can even squeeze in a quick workout on the outdorr fitness equipment while the kids play !

All the usual park goodies abound—shade shelters, toilets, BBQ’s, drinking fountains. I think I even recall seeing a sign that said WIFI ? But I could be imaging this so don’t take my word for it—get out there and try it—like I said you WON”T be disappointed !

I took it upon myself to indulge a little and checked out the happenings at Eat Street Markets. With husband and kids in tow, we didn’t really go with any expectations, we just went out for some family time together. But what we stumbled upon was an original to Brisbane, well thought out Market that was quirky with an eclectic mix of Industrial styled, pop up restaurants set up in shipping containers and an energetic atmosphere all thrown together‌.and it works!!! At first you are left slightly overwhelmed by all the choices available, but we figured, its only $2 entry and not too far away, we can come back for more! The market is set up reminiscent of an Asian market place, each alleyway lures you in with tantalising smells from every corner of the globe and stallholders who are simply doing what they love!!

The live music sets the mood, allowing people to

sit back and relax to the sounds with a craft beer or cocktail. We let the kids choose something to eat, and it was no surprise that they chose the Moulin Rouge Crepes from Miss Claude’s Crepes, laden with strawberries, chocolate sauce and icecream, it was devoured in less than a minute. I was left feeling fulfilled with my Gluten Free Donuts, that were the fluffiest, tastiest things that I could keep eating for the rest of my days, but pushed myself to new limits and indulged in a Japanese pizza, which was scrumptious. There truly is something for every taste, and prices are reasonable anywhere from $5 -$15 per dish. I was particularly excited to see that so many of the food places had gluten free options!

Mixed in with the food was a sprinkling of homewares, fashion & jewellery stalls, all spilling onto the streets with unique and wonderful wares . It is just the right mix in keeping with the authentic character of Eat Street Markets. We were treated to a spectacular show from the departing cruise ship just behind eat street, the kids were mesmerized as the horn was blown and we waved goodbye to the travellers.

Eat street is open Friday and Saturday Nights from 4pm- 10pm and Sundays from 11am – 7pm. Parking can be a bit of a nightmare so get in early, they do have a free carpark (follow the signs), and there is limited street parking (be careful to read signage, as you will get a ticket if you park illegally) It is also accessible by ferry and bus. The market is wheelchair and pram friendly, and allows small dogs to join in the fun (on a leash).

If you are looking for a night out to reconnect with friends, a date night or some family fun, I would absolutely 100% recommend Eat Street Markets.

Nestled in the heart of Brisbane CBD is a place so different from the hustling and bustling City streets dominated by businesses and shops, a place where you step inside and you know the fun is about to begin, and having fun is a must!

I recently took my family to Strike for Laser Tag and Bowling. Can I offer a valuable piece of advice? Don't tell your children about your plans prior to going, for weeks I heard non-stop, and I mean non-stop asking when are we going, are the guns real, will it hurt, is it Sunday yet!!

I was initially prepared to go into the Laser Tag game with my Miss 3.5 and either have to carry her (needing 2 hands on the laser gun, this renders me useless!) or have to exit due to the dark arena and real sound effects (she is sensory) But to our absolute amazement she put her laser chest plate on, held the laser gun in both hands and charged into the game like a true warrior, in that split second she turned, the fear evident on her face, but by gosh was I wrong, that was not fear, but Victory as she had just shot me....She..Shot..Me!!! Game ON!!

We had the Laser Tag session all to ourselves, which made it fun and safe! It was heart-warming to hear the kids laughing and trying so hard to 1.Keep quite to avoid being found and 2.hide! The game allows you to split into teams or have a free for all, we chose a free for all.

This was a first for all of us, and much to my amazement (and my husbands, sorry honey) I whooped all their bottoms (still not quite sure how!) Go Infinity!!..(My game name;)

After the Laser Tag we got taken to our Bowling lane for a game. The lanes are modern and clean, with big screen music videos playing on each lane. The kids had the bumpers automatically raised on their turns, somehow we still managed 2 gutter balls and one lane hop (work in progress on teaching little ones to not throw the ball up!) We ordered Pizzas (OMG yum and they have gluten free as well!) and softdrinks, which was spilled by Miss 3.5 in 10 seconds, luckily the staff at Strike are friendly and efficient, mess cleaned, back to the game!

We played 1 game of bowling, and this was plenty enough time for little ones with short attention spans, but the older kids wanted more! It was so nice to have time together as a family, just having fun! After we bowled our hearts out, lasered each other with love and filled our bellies with Pizza, it was time to go. The kids were not too happy about that, making us promise we will return.; I had a chance to check out the party room that over looks the bowling alley from above, it was set up ready for a swarm of party kids to take over. There are 3 party packages available, click here for pricing. There are day bowling sessions and night bowling sessions, with a bar available for drinks (alcoholic and non alcoholic) It would make a great place to have a function or birthday party (33rd here we come ;) There is a private karaoke room, equipped with the latest tunes to "drop it like it's hot" or reenact the scenes from Titanic or some Wiggles if that tickles your fancy!

I forgot to add that the bowling shoes, although still not the height of fashion, were remarkably better than the shoes from our childhood, comfortable and almost cool enough for this mum of three kids, who lives in thongs for the most part of the year, to strut around in!

My overall thoughts on Strike, a must for families, kids, couples, groups and friends. Perfect for School Holiday activities. It's sophisticated, yet fun and family friendly. Will we return? Why, yes, Infinity, umm I mean, myself and family will return, they want to take my Laser Tag and Bowling crown, I look forward to the challenge, Bring it on!!

Zealand for 12 months I reused lots of our packaging boxes for cupboards and fun things like cubby houses and aeroplanes.

So as soon as we arrived back in Brisbane I had my eyes pealed for an old piece of furniture I could use for my own up-cycling for the kids project. I had faith that although the whole kitchen idea had created an Australia wide TV cabinet drought, that something would show up for me. While I was waiting for the item to

turn up, I started to work on ideas. I came to thinking that I didn't just want the item to be limited to just only a kitchen; my son likes to play all manner of imagination play games and it would be such a big item I would want it to be quite interchangeable.

Then luck had it some family friends we met In NZ returned to Brisbane also, and after five years of their furniture remaining in storage they discovered that a lot had changed in those years: and what was fashionable and modern in home furnishing five years ago was now quite out of style. So when they posted on FB that all their old stuff was waiting on their front lawn for anyone who wants it...I snapped up the chance to see what I could use! In amongst my collection of items I saved them from was my very own super huge, super awesome TV CABINET!!! I was in up-cycling heaven!

And so I spent the next few months with a minute here or there of spare time to create a 'masterpiece' of imagination play equipment for my children: The Convertible Cafe/Supermarket!

Really it was as easy as sand, paint, and decorate. Once you have your plan and know what you doing it can all come together quite easily. The hardest part was probably cutting out the back panel of timber to create the open serving window( My husband did that part). When you look closely it's pretty rough, I probably could have done a 2nd coat of paint, but then I kind of liked the almost rustic look it has from the front of the cafe with only coat. And you have to remember, while it needs to be safe with no sharp edges etc, its for the kids; and they don't need to it to be too perfect!

You might notice the empty space on the supermarket side, I was planning on putting shelves in that section (the shelves that had been there went missing) but my son said it was the lift, so its been left empty.

Once finished my son said to me "Mummy I am so proud of you for making my special cafe for me", and that really is all the praise I needed, that super excited look on my son's face once I told him its all his, was priceless!

QUICK Lunch Box Snacks Muesli Bars Ingredients: 1 cup rolled oats 1 cup moist coconut flakes (desiccated is fine too) 1/2 cup wheatgerm 1/2 cup sesame seeds (you can also substitute this with 1/2 a cup of Tahini paste - great for a bit of added calcium) 1 cup of mixed seeds - I generally use sunflower kernels & Pepita's 1 cup of dried fruit - Feel free to add in whatever you have in the pantry. Usually, I add Gogi berries but sultanas, apricots or figs will work too.

1 cup of crushed nuts 2 tablespoon of chia seeds 125 grams of coconut oil 40 grams of butter 1/3 cup of honey 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder - optional (For People with Nut allergies or a nut free school - Ratio of oats & nuts can be changed to 1 1/3 cups each to account for the lack of nuts. But if it's for home or work, and you have no allergies leave them in, nuts are so good for you!)

Method: Line a large baking tray with non-stick paper.

Toast the oats, coconut flakes, wheatgerm, sesame seeds & seed mix in a frying pan over a medium heat until golden. Place in a large mixing bowl with dried fruit, nuts, chia seeds & cinnamon powder.

Melt coconut oil, butter & honey in a saucepan over a medium heat. The coconut oil melts really quickly so keep a close eye on this.

Bring the mixture to the boil & simmer for 5 minutes. If using Tahini paste, stir though at this stage.

Pour wet ingredients over dry ingredients & mix well.

Spoon into prepared tray & press down firmly (I find pressing down with a large spatula really helps). Place in the fridge to set (over night is best).

Cut into bars & enjoy!

Ingredients: 1 brown onion, quarte red 2 cloves of garlic, crus hed 1 large leek, quartered, white part only 1 tablespoons olive oil 3 large potatoes, quar tered 2 cups of water 1 tablespoon of vegeta ble stock paste 1/2 cup of pouring crea m salt & pepper to taste

Method: Heat oil in a large hea vy based pot.

Add onion, leeks & ga rlic & cook until soft.

Stir continually to av burning. oid Add potatoes, water, ve getable stock paste & cook until potatoes a soft. re Add cream & blend w ith a stick mixer or fo od processor.

Garnish with cream, bl ack pepper & parsley.

Serve with fresh bread .

I recently spent the morning at Ooniverse Family Cafe with my children and Sister. Having never been to Hawthorne before and using my well meaning (but directionally challenged) Sisters directions, we finally arrived!

Located behind the Hawthorne Cinemas, a garden pathway leads you down to the cafe, where you are welcomed by smiling faces and a cafe set up with Kids in mind! The tables were covered in paper, with crayons on each table. My kids went off exploring whilst I purchased Coffee and a toastie (bonus they had Gluten Free Bread !) The menu is healthy with Smoothies, Sandwiches, Fruit, Cheese and biscuit platters, Turkish Bread Sandwiches, Fruit Juice and Tea and Coffee. (you wont find cakes, chips and softdrinks here !)

Ooniverse do Messy Play for Kids Monday to Friday from 10am, it costs $10 per child and the child gets a sandwich, fruit and the chance to get messy and have some fun. My kids got to make playdough, do painting, drawing, water play and I didn't have to clean it up (note:dress the kids in play clothes) !!. There was group time on the mat with Nicky which lasts about 30 minutes, they get to sing, laugh and get involved and Nicky makes them each a balloon animal, all the while teaching them the value of good manners.

We spent a few hours at Ooniverse, and all in all it was a relaxed experience for me, and the kids had a great time (note: my 7 year old got involved in most activities, but it was targeted at younger kids, so he wasn't as excited, but he still enjoyed drawing and painting)

Don’t use the zoom on your device… just move closer to the subject of your photography !!! Repeat after me … I will regret using the zoom later no matter how much of a good idea it seems now !

Watch the background… take a second to check what’s behind the subject of your camera—nothing worse than an inappropriate photobomb you could have avoided.

Take more than what you need … cleanse your device regularly to ensure you have plenty of memory for taking pics in multiples—you can delete those you don’t need, like or that don’t make the cut with quality later

Smart Pups is an Australian Charity organisation training Assistance Dogs for Special Needs Children.

The Smart Pups are task-specific Assistance Dogs trained to improve the quality of life for children with Autism and Seizure related syndromes. As well as unconditional love, the dogs provide increased independence for the children & much needed help to their families What they do Smart Pups Assistance Dogs for Special Needs Children train as “Task Specific” Assistance Dogs for children with special needs. These dogs are fully trained to a Companion Dog standard before continuing their task specific training.

We specifically train assistance dogs for children up to the age of 18. (Many other organisations will not give service dogs to children under 18 years). We offer this service by creating a three member team. The child with the disability, the dog and an adult handler.

Our dogs can help in many ways Each dog guides its child through his or her daily routine and acts as a bridge between the

Such service dogs reduce childrens’ stress levels and increase their daily successes in a variety of ways: Positive social interactions: The dogs can help improve the children’s social skills. It gives them a reason to communicate and something appropriate to talk about. The children become more comfortable speaking to others as they get more practice talking about their pup in a variety of situations.

This social interaction often results in an increased vocabulary and decreased anxiety creating a social bridge for children who are often unsure as to how they should interact with their peers.

Sandpit

PLAY As the weather cools down the temptation to hibernate grows stronger… nothing like some fresh inspiration to coax the kids out of their indoors funk and into the fresh (albeit crisp) air ! Bundle up and get outside and enjoy these sandpit play ideas together !

1.

POURING AND MEASURING FUN Recycle used plastic bottles, cardboard tubes and anything else that can pour, scoup or funnel sand, add in a colander or two, some measuring cups and spoons and ENJOY !

3. MUDPIES !!!

YES its messy & wet & yes it’s winter but you can always add a little water before the kids start to play to control the “too cold, too sloppy pie factor”.

Add pots, pans, muffin trays, plastic bowls, stirring spoons and a cardboard box to use as an oven and let your little master chefs at it !!

2. CREATE YOUR OWN CONSTRUCTION ZONE Find the kids dump trucks and digger toys and add a hard hat and kids safety vest for constructive play ! If you don’t already have a classic yellow truck or two you can always scour garage sales, kids markets and online for banged-up-bonafide preloved and job ready Tonka or CAT tip trucks ! Add wooden blocks, sticks and branches and some large garden rocks for “city building”

4. BRING FARM FUN TO YOUR BACK YARD Most kids have a set of plastic or wooden animals lying around but if not grab a cheap packet from the local bargain store and set them free in the sandpit. Value add to the farming experience with some fake lawn or green fabric for paddocks (if you are really adventurous you can try tinting some sand the day before with green food colouring) and straws and string for fencing. Don’t forget some twigs for building shelter for the animals and maybe some fallen gum tree twigs for authentic shade ! Add water for damns and a tractor or two and you’ll have your own mini farm well underway and growing.

5. DIG FOR TREASURE M ME E-HEARTIES !

Pirates and sand go hand in hand—plastic pirate toys are fairly easy to come by to have some imaginary play time in the sandpit BUT, add a pirate hat and eye patch and set your buccaneers on course for some sandpit treasure hunting to enrich the experience . Most party supply sections in bargain stores have fake gold coins that can also be buried in the sandpit for fun. If you have more than one sea-faring scallywag you can minimise fights over ye loot by marking some of the coins with a dab of nail polish in a designated colour for each child !

6. DESIGN A DINOSAUR DIG !

There is nothing as exciting as digging for dinosaur eggs or fossils ! For those who are adventurous try imprinting plastic dinosaurs in plaster of paris a day or two before this activity. Hide the dried fossils under the top layer of sand and add water to pack this down firmly. By adding a weight and leaving overnight you should have hard compacted sand the next morning.

Encourage the kids to use paintbrushes , an air puffer and spatulas to “excavate” the fossils as carefully as possible. You could also try burying dino eggs—We found a recipe for DIY dino eggs at http://www.playcreateexplore.org You can gently bake your own eggs and hide them in the sandpit for the kids to discover before they “crack” them open to reveal the dinosaur hidden inside. Can’t wait to try this one !! Of course if you don't want to do the prep work plenty of stores have dinosaur excavation kits that can be buried quickly to enjoy !

Don’t pack away your camping gear, wishing for the return of summer just yet ! Winter camping is one of the best types of camping to enjoy with your family ! Its often less busy, less expensive and when you are well prepared just as special !

TOP TIPS for staying warm and

toastie in the great outdoors!

1. Comfort is key—think warm, soft and squishy and LAYERS … at least 3 will keep you warm especially !

2. Body heat—share sleeping bags ! If you don’t own a double sleeping bag, zip two singles oopen completely and join them together to create a double !

3. Ditch the old air mattress for a self inflating mattress— the huge air chambers in the old standard air mattresses will channel the cold right into your bones !

4. Stow chairs away for the night to ensure they don't gather dew or frost and are ready for perching on the next morning (preferably with a hot beverage in hand !!)

5. pack a car chamois to give everything a wipe down in the morning—simpler than using towels that take forever to dry 6. Fire wood should be kept covered to prevent damp from making it harder to light 7. Keep your feet as dry as possible—once your shoes are wet the rest of your body will feel cold !

8. Pack beanies, gloves and scarves 9. Windy ? Try and park your car to act as a windbreak if possible !

CAMPING with KIDDIES ?

Make a list of everything you’ll need and pack it ! Make sure you take into account each persons needs (a must do when you have a nappy wearing, bottle drinking bub) and make sure you don’t forget the night time chocolate for once the kids are in bed ! There are some great family camping lists online like this one: http://www.cozi.com/live-simply/ family-camping-checklist-few-greattips Aim to arrive at your destination with plenty of set up time in daylight and allow the kids time to familiarise themselves with their surrounds— remember it gets darker earlier in winter so allow for this.

Pack plenty of food—there is something about fresh air and the great outdoors that makes kids HUNGRY… keep them from getting HANGRY by packing lots of snacks as well as mains. Remember calorie rich foods during winter help with keeping you warm from the inside out. There is nothing wrong with prepreparing hearty stews, curried sausages and whatever else takes yours or the kids fancy and freezing them flat in large snaplock bags—these are easy to reheat over a stove and mean no fuss, few dishes preparation !

Don’t forget toys… but leave the electronic devices at home! If you pack a ball, a pack of cards, a skipping rope and some spades and buckets you’ll be amazed at how keeping it simple will encourage the kids to get busy making their own fun !
