A.L. Paca's Farms - 2014 Portfolio

Page 1

Introduction

P

lease let us introduce ourselves; we are Doug and Denise Caldwell, the proud owners of A.L. Paca's Farms. 1994 found us pursuing successful corporate careers - Doug in management with his engineering degree (UW-Wisc) and Denise in business with her bachelors in business (Bowling Green). When we came across alpacas later that year, we discovered a huge opportunity waiting for us in alpaca breeding and believed our technology and business skills could be leveraged towards advancing the North American alpaca. With the purchase of 3 top-end females, we began our breeding program and along the way found a far more enriching and rewarding lifestyle for which we are extremely grateful. As we hope our portfolio demonstrates, our program has enjoyed great success by producing some of the country’s most prize winning alpacas.

A.L. Paca's Farms owners, Doug and Denise Caldwell

Our farm spans 100 acres of hilly and rolling terrain in north central New York. The region is a vacation area with the Finger Lakes and the Wine Country tour beginning just a few miles from the farm. The many ponds, wet lands, hay fields, and pastures serve as home to beaver, geese, trumpet swans, bald eagles, and of course, alpacas which can number well above 100 during the spring, summer and fall breeding seasons.

Located central New York between Syracuse & Rochester.

Our main herd lives in a 7,000 sq ft arena barn. The primary barn, originally built in the 1920’s using surprisingly advanced construction techniques for the period, was completely renovated in 1995. The barn now contains a three story home along with a showroom, fiber processing area and offices. A country store to showcase alpaca wear and to hold classes was constructed in 2000.

The Cast and Crew

Donald

The Farm Display

Akari

Donald started with us 12 years ago in 2000 at just 16 years of age. As our herd manager, he provides hands on training, farm tours, medical and breeding care, alpaca evaluations and just about everything else. Mary has been with us now since 2002. She is truly wonderful on working with new crias and in helping us to care for their dams. Mary assists with just about everything including breeding, birthing, the medical program and training juveniles for the show ring.

Double Grey Champions at Futurity! We participate heavily in the show ring. Our show string reliably proves highly competitive winning numerous championships. (Turn the page for more on the awards received).

Only one is camera ready!

How 'bout some eggs to go with that ham?

Above: for a very special 2010 birthday surprise, Donald and Mary trained Akari to pull me in a cart. (I'm positive it was the alpaca who turned out to be the most surprised!)

The Anti-Gravity Pasture

We welcome your visit!

"Alumni" (the one on the left) is a life-sized statue made entirely of thousands of aluminum pieces; each individually welded together to form the alpaca. The project took a craftsman over 6 months to complete. We doubt he has the will to make another!

Hazel - The Wonder Dog...

... we often wonder what she's up to.

As the story goes, Spalding is named after Al Spalding, a Hall of Fame pitcher of the late 1800's for the Boston Red Stockings and Chicago White Stockings. Barry explained to me he loves to name his finest production with names evoking great and successful baseball pitchers (the better to THROW good crias Barry claims). So, Barry - we absolutely love the name, but have to wonder if Spalding's alias might be Webster, as in Noah, the author of 1828's "An American Dictionary of the English Language". Why Webster you might ask? It's simply about excelling at definitions; Noah Webster defining the English language and Spalding so well defining...

 An ideal frame with impeccable balance, large bone, amazing head, and an ultra smooth gait - the absolute definition of form and function.  Consistency in color with no spots --- and as uniform a Dark Silver Grey colored fleece as ever could be described.

 Outstanding staple density and uniformity - just open his top knot, or go down his legs, or check his stomach to see what consistency in density, fineness and --- whatever fleece attribute you want to learn about, really means.

 And --- our absolute favorite quality in any color, especially and rarely if ever witnessed in a grey - primary fibers having the curvature and near fineness of the secondary's - exactly what is written and spoken about as perhaps our industry's most important fleece objective. So, you might call him Spalding or Webster. What we are sure about though, is that is that neither of these renowned achievers would take any offense. Breeding Fee: $3,000 for drive-by; $3,500 for drop-off; OR... Breed Now / Pay Later: $500 at time of breeding w/ balance due at time of the cria's ARI registration.

When you see Santiago, the first thing you'll most notice is his beautiful head with short muzzle, correct ear set and shape. The eye is then drawn to his balanced frame supported by a set of legs even a runway model would appreciate. His motion and gate is fluid. As to his fleece:

Mid-side

• Remarkable consistency in fineness, crimp frequency, amplitude, staple organization, and (perhaps most important for a black) color. • Superb coverage with a dense top knot and heavy fleece all of the way to the ground. • Glowing brightness (like his dad's). • Super soft handle!
