Our History A Century of Caring For over 100 years, VON has pioneered health services in Canada. We have a proud tradition of often being the first to identify emerging health and social needs, and then providing innovative services that meet those needs. That’s the way it’s been since the founding of the Victorian Order of Nurses for Canada. VON’s first 12 nurses were admitted to the order at a ceremony in November 1897 - a month before Queen Victoria granted the organization its royal charter. Today’s VON delivers its more than 75 different programs and services through 53 local sites staffed by 4,500 health care workers, and by a dedicated army of over 9,000 community volunteers. VON continues to be a dynamic and responsive community-based organization. We work with local people in the community to help identify health care needs and develop appropriate services.
