• The Volunteers won the 2010 NIT Season Tip-Off Championship last week at Madison Square Garden in New York City. After outstanding performances in wins over VCU and seventh-ranked Villanova, Tobias Harris was named to the All-Tournament Team and Scotty Hopson was voted the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player and also earned SEC Player of the Week honors. • Tennessee is just the second SEC team ever to win the prestigious NIT Season Tip-Off championship in “the world’s most famous arena.” Florida won the event in 1987. • Tennessee leads the SEC in 3-point field-goal defense (.268) and ranks second in field-goal percentage defense (.354) and rebounding (42.6). • Freshman Tobias Harris, from Dix Hills, N.Y., leads the Vols in minutes (27.4) and shares the team scoring lead with Scotty Hopson at 15.8 points per game . • Senior point guard Melvin Goins is tied for the the SEC lead in steals with 2.5 per game. • Vols head coach Bruce Pearl is just two wins away from career win No. 450. • After using stifling defense to reach the NCAA Elite Eight last season, the Vols are picking up where they left off. Tennessee is holding its opponents to 66.8 points per game and just .354 shooting from the field. The Vols have held four of five opponents to less than 36 percent shooting this year. • Raiders guard James Gallman, a sophomore from Knoxville’s Fulton High School, played in the Pilot Rocky Top League two summers ago and was a teammate of Renaldo Woolridge. • Tennessee’s coordinator of video scouting, Houston Fancher, is a 1988 graduate of Middle Tennessee (Physical education). • Tennessee is playing its 102nd season of varsity basketball and its sixth season under head coach Bruce Pearl. Harris, Hopson Bring Home NIT Hardware Junior guard Scotty Hopson was extraordinary in UT’s victories over VCU and seventh-ranked Villanova during November’s run to the NIT Season Tip-Off championship in New York City’s Madison Square Garden ... Hopson averaged a team-high 18.0 points to go along with 6.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game en route to being named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, as well as the SEC Player of the Week ... Making his first collegiate appearance in his home state, freshman forward Tobias Harris (Dix Hills, N.Y.) averaged 15.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists while earning a place on the All-Tournament Team ... Tennessee Approaching 1,500th All-Time Win With 1,476 wins to the program’s credit, Tennessee needs just 24 wins to reach 1,500 all-time victories, dating to the inaugural 1908-09 season.
Tough Break For Bone Senior guard Josh Bone sustained a fractured left wrist during the Vols’ exhibition win over Brevard Nov. 3 ... Dr. Robert Ivy, of Knoxville Orthopedic Clinic, said Bone is expected to be sidelined for at least eight weeks ... As a junior walk-on last season, the Nashville, Tenn., native played an important role in several Tennessee victories, most notably wins over Ole Miss and Ohio in the NCAA Tournament ... This season’s GameDay broadcast will precede the franchise’s first-ever same-school doubleheader ... Concussion Prevention A Focus In Hoops, Too The NCAA this season is strengthening the penalties for elbow contact above the shoulders ... Officials will assess either an intentional or flagrant foul on a player who swings an elbow and makes contact with an opponent above the shoulders ... If the foul is deemed to be intentional, the team whose player was struck would receive two free throws and possession of the ball ... Bruce and Brandy Pearl have a goal to help raise $1 million for the OUTLIVE program over five years, and the couple is hosting an “Evening In Orange” fundraising event in April that is expected to raise more than $1 million in just that one night alone ... Legends In The Rafters Four Tennessee basketball legends are memorialized with banners in the Thompson-Boling Arena rafters ... During a halftime ceremony on March 1, 2006, banners honoring longtime head coach Ray Mears (1962-77) and beloved radio “Voice of the Vols” John Ward (1964-99) were unveiled ... The UT men’s basketball program had never retired a jersey prior to the 2006-07 season, but after nearly 100 years of hardwood history, Bernard King (1975-77) was the first player to earn that distinguished honor ... King’s No. 53 jersey was officially retired during a halftime ceremony at the Feb. 13, 2007, home game against Kentucky (UT won 89-85) ... Then on March 2, 2008, Ernie Grunfeld (1974-77) became the second UT player to receive the ultimate honor, when his No. 22 jersey was unveiled in the rafters during halftime of Tennessee’s 63-60 victory over Kentucky.

Season-Ticket Sales Strong Again Tennessee has sold 14,800 season tickets thus far, with the only available season-ticket packages remaining located in the arena’s upper level, mostly above Row 10 ... Vols Enjoying World-Class Facilities The University of Tennessee invested more than $35 million into its basketball facilities between the end of the 2006-07 campaign and the start of 200708 ...
