Is this a resurgence of 14-1 or just a fluke? A record-setting 18 players participated in Sam’s Billiards Straight Pool Tournament, April 2, 2006. With over a decade of consecutive 1st- Sunday-of-the-month tournaments this turnout tops the previous high of 16. As one of two regular venues for 14-1 tournaments in the region, Sam’s draws players from as far away as Seattle. About a third of the players were from outside of the Portland area for this tournament. Robert Colby of Olympia took first place with five convincing victories. Only Tracy Fannin got more than half as many points as Robert in his 50-28 match. Darin Walding edged John Fleming in the finals round 50-47 to take second place. John beat Bill Bradford 5016 for third place. Due to the luck of the draw, Justin Lilje was paired with John in the initial round. Justin was barely beat in the timed match 36-34. in Roseburg, Oregon, on the weekend of April 8-9. The event featured double-elimination 9-ball on 7-foot Valley bar boxes. Mike Cronk of Myrtle Creek, Oregon, marched undefeated through the winner’s bracket, defeating Tom Huynh (Roseburg, OR) in the winner’s bracket finals 7-6. In the B-side quarterfinals, Ken Cavener (Grants Pass, OR) eliminated Randy Baker (Coos Bay. OR) 7-3, while Greg Christensen (Bend, OR) ousted his son, Jesse Christensen (Bend., OR) 7-2. Cavener then finished Greg Christensen’s run by a 7-3 margin in the B-side semifinals, only to be turned out himself by Tom Huynh in the finals. Huynh had to defeat Mike Cronk twice to gain the title, and he succeeded in the first set by a 7-5 score, only to have Cronk turn the tables by the identical 7-5 margin in tourney finals to claim the championship. By virtue of being the highest-finishing ACS member, Mike Cronk won a free entry into the 2006 ACS National 8-Ball Championships – courtesy of the ACS. Rick VanBerger won the McDermott Cue raffle. Shooters Annual 9-Ball Huge Success By Stacy Klappenbach
If you missed this 9-ball tournament, you missed out! Shooters Sports Bar was THE place to be April 9-11th for the annual tournament. Friday night mini tournaments kicked off at 6pm and ran all night long as we registered players for the main event . A full bracket of thirty two players fought for the chance to win the $1500 first place prize, not to mention the bragging rights. The race was 11 in the winners bracket and 9 in the losers. Matches were called Saturday

On April 22 & 23rd, the NWPA held tour stop #2 at the Cue Ball in Salem, Oregon. Once again, we had players from all over Washington, Oregon and Canada participating, including a local player playing in her first NWPA event, Marion Morales. Jim Lebold, owner of the Cue Ball has been our longest sponsor, again, supplying the girls with free coffee, doughnuts and snacks as he has done every year. Thanks Jim! The girls had one more added surprise, Ford traveled to Oregon to help as Tournament Official. Thank you Ford for all the entertainment and support. The big news at the player meeting was that our fourth stop at McQ’s in Spokane is being sponsored this year by The Break. This means our next four stops are all qualifiers in addition to the regular added money. The goal for next year is now, of course, for every tournament to be one. On Saturday, play went so smoothly that a group of us made it to a local 9 ball tourney and took off with all the prize money, some people just never get enough of pool. But Sunday, had the money rounds and that’s where all the excitement happens. Playing for the point match was Linda Carter, who was continuing her great playing after winning our first event. However, Mary Hopkin was also red hot and managed to hold Linda off winning 7-3 sending Linda to the B side. Julie Valdez was playing Kim Jones, who is looking like a regular on Sundays, and Kim took it 7-1. Also, Joanne Ashton of Calgary, BC battled Andrea Saenz-Maes and won 7-4. In the 4th place match, Joanne really took off and Kim was forced to watch a 7-2 loss. This set up traveling roommates in Linda and Joanne (Linda having knocked Joanne into the B side on Saturday), with Joanne in stroke easily sliding to the finals by defeating Linda 7-2. In the finals, both players started out at the top of their games, but as the match wore on, Joanne missed a couple of key shots and Mary took advantage and went on to a 9-6 victory. Congratulation to Mary for her first victory in over a year. morning and the race was on! We had whittled down to the final eight by 10pm. Play resumed Sunday morning at 9am and wrapped up by 3pm. I must say that every single match I had the pleasure of watching kept me on the edge of my seat! The cue ball is placed on the head spot. The objective of this skill shot is to cut the object ball into pocket C or F, your choice. Here are a few helpful hints to aid you to successfully execute this great skill shot. Use the same cue to shoot this shot each time. I use almost maximum left English along the cue balls horizontal axis. Try to keep your cue as level to the plane of the table as possible to minimize curve. I use a medium speed on this shot and let the English do the work of making the object ball. I start my aiming by applying the English to the cue ball and aiming the center of my shaft at the same point on the object ball. You will have to vary your aim because of the amount of deflection your cue has. The cue ball must hit the cushion first, just missing the object ball and the spin will cause the ball to hug the cushion and be pocketed. Be sure to get the correct odds when you shoot this shot. If you can make it in three attempts ask for five tray’s. Good luck with this one.

A Banking System Than Works By: Bob Jewett of the SFBA
San Francisco Billiard Academy If you have ever tried to bank systematically, you’ve probably found out that there are lots of corrections to be added in for speed, cloth, spin on the object ball, angle of cut, humidity and phase of the Moon. Here is a system that works well most of the time and the setup I show below will allow you to quickly test how well it works for a wide range of situations. With all systems for banking and kicking, you need to state at the start what kind of spin and speed will be used for shots in the system. Angles off the cushions obviously change for kick shots when you have side spin on the cue ball, and they also change as the speed of the ball is changed. The system below works for bank shots with no spin on the object ball when it hits the cushion. Bob Jewett The simplest system for banking balls one cushion is the mirror system. Let’s look at it first to see how well it works. It says that the angle of the ball into the rail is equal and opposite to the angle of the ball coming out of the rail. We are going to bank a ball off the left cushion to make it in pocket A. First set up the table as follows. You will need a bar stool. Put a ball centered in the jaws of pocket A. Put another in the jaws of pocket B. Now put a third object ball on the bar stool in line with balls A and B and as far from B as A is, at C. Make sure you have this right within half an inch or so. Remove the ball hanging in pocket A. Now, if you bank a ball off the left cushion towards the ball on the bar stool, and if the ball obeys the mirror banking principle, it will go in pocket A. Try some shots from various locations and see how well the system works for various speeds and such. Can you find a single approach that makes balls from all angles and distances? I can’t.

Next, move the ball and bar stool about a foot towards the table but along the same line, so there is a little less than three diamonds distance from ball B, at D. This is a first guess for the system. That distance may have to be adjusted for your table. My claim is that if you send a ball into the left rail and it is going towards the barstool ball D, it will go in pocket A, provided that it is not spinning when it hits the cushion. If the object ball is nearly on the cushion, like ball X, having no spin is easy to accomplish. Set the cue ball for a straight shot at D, and shoot straight at the ball. If the ball banks a little long or short, move D a little closer or farther from B but make sure you move along the AB-D line. Try shooting a ball at X at various speeds. I think you will find that there is very little change in the banking angle as you change the speed. Next, try shooting
an object ball starting at Y. The problem now is that if you shoot slowly, the object ball will have time to acquire forward roll, and that roll will make the ball curve long after it hits the cushion. You can fix this in two ways. First, you could pick a target closer to the original C position, which will compensate for the long roll. That’s OK, but that’s not what we’re doing with this system. Instead, hit the ball hard enough that it has no time to pick up follow from the cloth. Experiment to find out how hard that is on your table. If your cloth is fairly old and a little sticky, you’ll need to whack the ball to keep the angle true. That’s the sort of speed you’ll see most of the bank pool players use in the banks division of the Derby City Classic. Try a bunch of ball positions and find what speed it takes to make the ball while shooting directly towards the D target. (Banking System continued on page 28)

With the summer months right around the corner, I thought we could all use this courtesy reminder… Keep it cool. Have you ever been in a match and discovered that your body temperature began rising uncontrollably? Did you notice your hands getting clammy? Or, did you begin sweating profusely? These do not sound like very attractive characteristics, but many of us are victims to one or more of them. How do we prevent this from happening? How do we maintain the basic 3 C’s (Calm, Cool, and Collected) during a match? Unfortunately, there is no key ingredient or magic pill to make this happen. There are, however, some Samm Diep ways to lower your body temperature and help you keep your cool during your match. · Dress cool, and comfortably. If your body is sensitive to temperature changes, it may be time to do some shopping. Look for tournament apparel that is loose-fitting and comfortable to play in. Keep your eye out for fabrics that absorb moisture well. I don’t buy anything that I can’t shoot pool in. If you want to win, think “function over fashion.” · Wash your hands. Before or during your match, wash your hands with cool to cold water. Not only does it help lower your body temperature, it will help wake you up. Of course, make sure your hands are completely dry before playing. · Drink lots of water and make sure it’s available. Most large tournaments supply water for the players. Bring your own water bottle and refill it before matches. That way, you’ll always have it with you and you won’t have to wonder if you’re drinking from the right cup. Drinking cold water hydrates and replenishes the body better than soft drinks or beer. · Don’t forget to breathe. Long, slow, deep breaths between shots help supply plenty of oxygen to the brain and slow down your heart rate. Find a solid breathing pattern for yourself and sustain it during your match. Also, make sure you breathe when you’re shooting. Don’t hold your breath. · Walking/strolling between matches. Keeping the circulation going between matches is better than sitting around, waiting to see who your next opponent is. It also helps to keep the muscles loose and relaxed. · Get a towel. Trust me, once you start keeping a towel with your case, you’ll find many uses for it. It helps keep your hands dry too. · Get help. If all else fails, you may want to consider using a glove or hand talc. Some people just have naturally clammy, moist hands and there is nothing that will change it. If your clammy hands are affecting your ability to create a smooth, stable bridge, it may be time for reinforcement. Notice what works for you. Everyone is different. What you do that day or what you eat may also affect how your body reacts. Staying calm, cool and collected conditions your body to consistently perform at high levels. So, the next time you begin feeling a bit warm and flush; don’t let that feeling consume you. Keep it cool while shooting pool. If the angle is too steep for the soft-hit option, you can try going off the pocket point, as shown at the bottom of this diagram. Making the 2-ball is, admittedly, a low-percentage shot, but the idea can be useful in safety play when balls block other options. At the top is a masse’ option to avoid scratching, which I’d never try in a game that meant anything. It’s included here for academic completeness.

In Memoriam NEAL VELANSKY April 15, 1945 -April 13, 2006 The people of the circle known as the pool world lost a good friend recently. He had so many friends and was loyal to a fault. Neal was born in Detroit, Michigan and wished to return there after his death two days before his 61st birthday. He fought a long valiant fight against cancer and did as much traveling as his declining health allowed, . He particularly enjoyed visiting old friends and one in particular in Australia. He also went to the Holy Land, England, China, Russia and made many trips to Detroit to visit friends and relatives. He particularly enjoyed going to major pool tournaments where many of his buddies played. Upon his move to Portland, I believe in the mid-60’s, he went to Amato’s, where the pool and golf action was. No slouch at pool himself, he played golf at Amato’s, (since closed), Grand Central Bowl, (closed also) and at Classic Billiards through the years until declining health limited his participation. He was one of the top players in the golf game. ( which is played on 5x10 or 6X12 snooker tables)., and played with the same class in which he lived his life. Neal was very generous and it was a major accomplishment to pay a check when Neal was around. Neal enjoyed playing golf, (on the real grass of fairways, besides the green felt), riding his bicycle and visiting his family and friends. He had an Abssynian cat named “Muchifer”, who stayed on his bed for up to 20 hours at a time when Neal was at his son’s house after being sent home diagnosed as terminally ill. He dearly loved that cat. He adored his family, particularly his son, Danny, daughter-in-law, Amy and his granddaughter. His sister, Brenda traveled here from Detroit several times during Neals illness and accompanied his body to Detroit for burial beside his Mother. We extend our sympathy to his family & we will all miss one of the nicest, kindest loyal friends to come into our lives. Though your body has departed, Neal, we cherish the memories of your life and friendship. Lovingly, Jean & Frank Bartholomew One time at Grand Central Bowl during a tense golf game, Neal would always be the one to add a little levity to the room, and be ever self-effacing. He’d say, “You know, you can drive a truck for two weeks and they call you a truck driver”. “I’ve been playing pool for forty years and they’ve never called me a pool player”. As remembered by Bob Zack Another excerpt about Neal and playing golf, on a fairway, Dave Reavis said “He might only hit the ball 50 yards, but was always just cheerful and thankful to be outside enjoying the company of his friends”. He also rode his bicycle, often in the company of long-time friend, Sandy Watson. They never needed to wait for the sun to shine to ride, covering many miles of southern Washington & all over the Portland area occasionally getting caught in some famous Oregon liquid sunshine. It never seemed to bother too much and they were always ready the next time. He is surely missed.

From The Work Bench by: Pat Sheehan - mrpoollsr@aol.com - See ad page 13 In digesting all the info at the B.C.A. trade show I thought you might like to share some of the technical questions that came up from the horses mouth, the manufactures themselves. Since I learned so much and Pat Sheehan shared so much with others, you may get bored with all I have to tell. It might take a couple of articles to cover the whole story. I would appreciate your comments and would love to hear from you either by phone or E mail. The contacts are listed below. People were amazed by the ease of installation of the Gold Crown style table via China. The people stopping by the booth noticed the smoothness of the cloth and Paddo’s ability to do the pockets without showing a fastener. The general comment of the installers who stopped by was discontent with the difficulty in putting on the worsted fabrics. The sales force realizes the extra profits in selling the finer goods. The owner of the company sees the happy customer who has a pool table that plays well and the players are demanding the cloth in the rooms, taverns and private clubs. My next article will be on the inside story of worsted wool and the change they have made in the market place. There are so many benefits that the old woolen broad cloth has been replaced. Gorina and Simonis were on the cutting edge of this technology and every one has been trying to catch up with them. There are not many mills in the world that can work with the type of yarn that it takes to produce a fine surface like these two European giants. There are only two mills left in the U.S. because the labor costs are so high in weaving it. I am amazed that both Simonis and Gorina can weave bolt after bolt with out a flaw. In the hundreds of bolts that I have used; today I got the first flaw just to find the exception to prove the rule. It was a single pulled thread but marked so well both on the edge but in chalk where the bad thread was. Lucky me it was exactly where I needed to cut cushion cloth. I should have knocked on wood when I told both Ivan Lee and Carlos that I had never found one. What you hate is to miss one that is not marked, put it on the table, put the rails on leave and have the customer call. You might get the mill to stand behind the fabric but I have never known them to reimburse the labor. The cloth is so sturdy that it will out last three woolen because by its nature it is stronger and tougher and is harder to get it to do the installers will. I have been using worsteds since the late 1970’s so I have some experience with it. I suppose I must have had a few choice words and failures in the early days, but knew the benefits far out weigh the extra hassle. Carlos the owner of the worsted plant in Spain explained the reason for it’s strength starts with the sheep. The usual method of raising sheep is to drive them from pasture to pasture. Where the Morino sheep are raised in Australia they never need to move to greener pastures. Transportation on foot or hoof as the case may be takes energy and growing wool takes energy. These sheep grow longer and stronger wool and it than takes a lot of combing and spinning to get the thread just right. Between Carlos and Mark Simonis from the Belgium mill, I learned all the inside dope on the type of fabric I have preferred for almost thirty years. Lucky me I got to spend over one hour with one of the most attractive
women in the billiard industry, Ledeen Hangen president of R.C. Designs. Old gruff guys with broken and scared fingers and bent backs don’t often get a chance to talk shop with good looking “chicks” like Ledeen or Felice and Chris Hayes from Simonis. Ledeen was nice enough to explain the problems that we manufactures and installers have been having with the imported pockets. I have been using the Chinese pockets to get the natural dye but have had real problems as I am sure other installers share. Pockets that are not the same size they are not square and the holes are not at 90o to the surface or in the same place. R.C. Designs has spent the time and money to solve the problems. In stead of the old sand molds they developed to Genesis pocket. It is injected into a mold that is 10X more expensive than the sand molds and the zinc, aluminum, magnesium and copper Z8 pocket castings are 2Xs more expensive that the old steel. They also do not have the problem with the chemical reaction on the leather and the seem has been moved from the ball impact spot that cut the iron cover on the commercial table. The sum total of the benefits of the of the new styles of pockets and shields, and the z8 casting will give an even smarter look to the finished table and a much happier installer. Not many buyers found the need to make the trip to Houston. Paul Schorzman from Classic Billiards never misses a show. Hank a well known installer and the Prughs from Vancouver showed, Casey Leibold, Don and Rob from Golden West, but those from the swim and spa combo were in the peak of setting up for their other season couldn’t get away. They missed a great show. If you are a dealer, room owner, or installer you should try to make the next show in Las Vegas. Car Poolers Play Championship Match By David Teller
SPOKANE, WA Dan Louie coasts past Todd Marsh to win his first McQ’s 9-ball Open held April 1. The two S e a t t l e residents rode together to the Spokane tournament. They played each other in a match for the driver’s seat. Louie won 9-3. From left to right is Todd Marsh, Dan Louie and Joe Gilliland Marsh then defeated Joe Gilliland of Post Falls, Ida. 7-4 to get back into the championship match. Gilliland placed third, his highest finish in the tournament. In the final match, Louie broke and ran to win the first match and never looked back. With an explosive break that lifts him off the ground, and slow, methodical shooting, he beat Marsh a second time, 9-3, missing only two shots the entire match. “It’s hard to play against someone you put on a pedestal,” Marsh said of his matches against his long time idol. “I’m going to have to stop liking him if I want to have a chance of ever beating him.” The comeback performance of the tournament is Pete Quande of Missoula, Mont. He lost his first match 9-2 to Ben Hassler of Oak Harbor, Wash. He held his next four opponents to four games or less to finish tied for 5th place after being eliminated by Joe Gilliland. In the brotherly love match, Joe Gilliland sent his identical twin brother, Greg, to the loser’s bracket with a 9-8 win. “It was nice to beat him. He practices more than I do,” said Joe. SUSIE McRAE CANCER BENEFIT Susie McRae called me the other day and said “Maybe for the benefit tournaments, you could suggest everyone wear crazy hats!” When I asked her why, she told me of all the cool hats people have given her during her recovery. Susie was diagnosed with cancer this last fall. I know for those of you hearing this for the first time it comes as very hard news. Her surgery went well and she is on the road to recovery I Susie McRae am happy to report! Her positive attitude through all of this has shown me what a remarkable person Susie truly is! Nite Hawk in Portland, Oregon, on Friday-Sunday, April 21-23. The event featured double-elimination 9-ball on 8-foot Valley bar boxes. Former professional Dan Louie of Mercer Island, WA took an undefeated march through the winner’s bracket to gain a spot in the title match after out pointing Stan Tourangeau 9-6. In the loser’s bracket quarterfinals and semifinals, Jesse Allred eliminated Bob Zack 9-7, while Mike Zimmerman ousted Todd Marsh 9-8; with Zimmerman then relegating Allred to 4th place by a 9-1 margin. Tourangeau was then relegated to 3rd place by Zimmerman 9-6 in the loser’s bracket finals. The tourney finals was all Dan Louie, as he brandished Mike Zimmerman 9-2 to claim the title. By virtue of being the highest-finishing ACS member, Stan Tourangeau qualified for a free entry into the 2006 ACS National 8-Ball Championships – courtesy of the ACS. In the finals between defending 2005 San Diego Classic winner Kelly Fisher ranked 3rd in the WPBA and 2nd ranked Karen Corr, it was a case of Deja-Vu. Initially Corr dominated with a 3-0 lead, however the tide turned and it became all Fisher. With two nine ball breaks by Fisher and some rough misses and bad rolls by Corr, Viejas was a repeat performance for Fisher who won 7-4 in front of a packed crowd. On April 1, 2006 seven teams from the Tacoma and Federal Way Traveling 8 Ball Divisions competed for the Western Washington 2006 BCA Team Championship Title. This years event was sponsored and hosted by The Q’z Family Restaurant and Sports Lounge, Miller Brewing Company and W. WA. BCA Pool League. The Q’z owners, Ed and Nickii Tarape once again came through with prizes for every team that participated. Prizes included added money to the 1st-3rd place teams and promotional gifts which included; T-Shirts, umbrellas and Sonics Tickets for the 4th-7th place teams. The format was a race to the first 3 rounds won with 4 games in each round. The regular weekly player handicaps were used with the difference being credited at 1.5 the normal rate to the lower team per round. This years team tournament took 12 hours and exposed our local players to the grueling constant play conditions that they would be exposed to at our BCA national and regional tournaments. The players enjoyed playing and meeting players from another division with the one exception being the 9:00 A.M. start time. My thanks goes out to all people that made this years event possible. Milwaukie’s newest Bar and Grill is Domenic’s. Totally remodeled from its former self, known
as Buddy’s on Southeast McLaughlin, 1/2 block south of G.I. Joes. Mr. B, the new owner has opened up the space, let the sunshine filter in through the many windows, completely remodeled the bathrooms, and gave the entire place an open airy feel along with a private poolroom with six brand new valley tables. I first entered Domenic’s when I delivered “The Break” the beginning of April. I was immediately struck by what a warm, inviting, comfortable place it was. More and more people are discovering what a great place Domenic’s is to be as well. Mr. B remarked, “We get new faces everyday. We’re a multi-use venue. We have live music on Fridays and Saturdays. We have a DJ on Thursdays and we’re going to start having a DJ on Wednesday night as well. We have sports viewing, shuffleboard, Oregon lottery, video games, Nascar viewing and karaoke. People come here for a variety of different reasons.” The great menu is one of those reasons. With a wide selection of sandwiches on the menu,
their Bacon Tillamook Cheddar Cheese Burger is the best! Italian sausage with grilled peppers, incredible Halibut, Chicken breast, Caesar salad, Amatrician-Penne, Putanesa and Venettiziana have all received high compliments from the many hungry customers that come for the excellent food. The quality and consistency of the food served there is what brings the customers back for more. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner are served all day. Mr. B mentioned, “You can come in 15 minutes before we close and get an omelet.” Mr. B has paid attention to detail and is constantly striving to make Domenic’s better and more enjoyable for his customers. He has paid particular attention to the live bands that play there. “I need to physically go out and see bands at other venues because we want to maintain a certain level of quality. We’ve had some very good bands in here and we need to be known as a place that has consistently good music all the time. Norman Sylvester played here. Norman has been an icon in this town for decades and he packed the place. We still have people calling back to see when he will be playing again. It’s that level of quality that we want to maintain on a weekly basis.” Not only are the live bands awesome but you can enjoy playing shuffleboard on two full length tables, which are hard to find. There are brand new flat screen TV’s for the sports enthusiasts. NFL Ticket was very popular, two dart boards,
video games, and of course 7 POOL TABLES. “The room is very spacious. We have comfortable booth seating, lounge seating with chairs on casters that swivel and rock. We have an extensive elevated seating area with bar stools. Our separate poolroom has 6 pool tables in it with an internet jukebox. What’s nice about this space is that when we have live music or karaoke in the big room, people can go in the poolroom and still play the jukebox,” Mr. B proudly said. Domenic’s holds a weekly pool tournament every Tuesday night. Sign-ups start at 7:00 pm, $5 entry + $3 green fee, 8-Ball, BCA rules, the house matches the pot. Many of the area’s best pool players have shown up for the tournaments including Glenn Atwell. So, stop in and shoot a little pool next Tuesday night.
Domenic’s is also looking for pool league teams. Right now they have a couple of APA teams committed to playing out of there but they still have room for more teams on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday nights. It is easy to see that Mr. B has put a lot of thought and effort into making Domenic’s THE place to be. When I asked him what new and exciting plans he had he said, “We’re going to build a deck and have an outside seating area. This will be a great place to have a cocktail, smoke, or make a phone call. Profile of a Champion: The Glenn Atwell Story

I had a chance to talk to Glenn a couple of weeks ago about his life, family and his game. I caught up with him at Classic Billiardsin Portland, OR where he was spending a little quality time with his daughter Kiersten Atwell. Although Glenn was not born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, he has lived in the Portland/Vancouver area for 20+ years. Detroit, Michigan was home but he left there in the early 80’s and was California bound. While in California, a lady who designed clothes was going to Alaska to open a store and offered Glenn a
job - so North to Alaska he went. The job fell through but Glenn stayed and played pool and did very well after meeting some casino people. He also met a lady, Kim Suzuki, with whom he became very close and they eventually moved to Portland, Oregon. This was home for Kim, and Glenn was here to stay too. Glenn has amassed quite a number of impressive wins over the years. He’s participated in Regional League Championships as well as professional tournaments. Glenn says, “Among my most cherished wins are titles from the Western BCA Masters Divisions, Reno Open 8-Ball Singles, Sewickley Open, World Open Team Tournament (VNEA), State Championships and I was the overall winner on the Pechauer West Coast Tour.” When I asked Glenn what was his most memorable win, he responded, “When I won the ’94 National Championship. It was billed as the Amateur North American Open, held at the Flamingo Hilton in Reno. Jeremy Jones and I were in the finals. It was my first big win.” For every memorable win there is usually a loss or two that stand out

The Moyer Foundation seeks billiards competitors for new event! Seattle Mariners All-Star pitcher, Jamie Moyer, is one of the most recognizable philanthropists in the Seattle area. For over six years, The Moyer Foundation has supported over 100 different
teammates together to bowl with friends and fans—all in the name of charity. Originally a bowling-only tournament, this year is the first time the annual tournament will include a billiards competition. On June 4th, after the Kansas City game at Safeco field, Seattle Mariners will join Jamie to bowl and

children’s charities by hosting a variety of community fundraising events. One of the most popular annual events is the Jamie Moyer Celebrity Bowling and Billiards Tournament. For the past seven years, Jamie has brought his
play pool side-by-side with guests at the beautiful new ACME Bowling, Billiards and Events venue in Tukwilla, WA. Guests will enjoy meeting many of their favorite players as each player rotates through lanes and billiards tables -
providing guests with opportunities to get autographs, talk with players and get photographs while they compete for great prizes. Additional “surprise” sports celebrities have been known to make an appearance as well—like famed Notre Dame Basketball coach, Digger Phelps, who joined the fun at last year’s tournament. Monthly Tournament Results By Hardtimes Billiards Tournament Director Tom Suarez
Springtime has arrived in Sacramento. Rain, Sunshine, more rain, clouds and more rain. We’ve had a wet and cloudy Spring and that’s a bad thing for being outside but it also brings players inside to enjoy the pocket billiard tables. Our First of the Month One Pocket and 9-Ball events were full of Northern California’s best players that were up for the challenge. Trevor Smith of Sacramento had a great Saturday full of One Pocket match wins. Mr. Smith took wins over Craig Herman, Baby Frank, Bobby Hunter (Carson City NV), Melvin (Bar Area CA) and winning the Hot Seat match over local Sacramento player Robert Aldana. Robert Aldana got to the Hot Seat match by besting Sarge, Carl Jr (Carson City NV) Ron Lilly and Roger Estelle (Vacaville CA). But as fate would have it, Robert lost to Joey Gebron in the finals of the one-loss side. Joey took the long road to the Finals, losing his first match to Roger Estelle, won 8 straight matches to make it to the finals against Trevor. In the finals, it was all Trevor Smith to take the first place finish and $300 prize. The 9-Ball event was won by Sonoma County resident Lance Salazar. Lance took the Hot Seat match from Trevor Smith in a tough fought HillHill battle. Mr. Salazar won matches over Dan Russo, James Williams (7/8), Jim Fabionar (2nd) Gilbert Arellano (5th/6th) and Trevor Smith (3rd)
The finals were true double elimination. Jim Fabionar and Lance Salazar took the match to the limits. Jim getting his chance to play for 1st place by winning tough matches over Don McLeod, Dave Rodden, they losing to Lance and going to the left side and winning matches over Josh Palmer (7 th /8 th ) Robert Aldana (5th/6th) Roger Estelle (4th) and for the finals of the One Loss side a close match over 3rd place finisher Trevor Smith. Jim Fabionar won the first 3 games of the first set of the true double elimination. Lance took advantage of Jim’s ‘dry’ break on the 4th game to string 3 games together and tie the match at 3-3. The finals always seem to bring out the ‘drama’ of the tournament and this was no exception. At HillHill, Lance went for the tough 6 ball Trevor Smith to put the match away and missed. Jim took advantage and won the first set. The second set was a different story, Mr. Salazar got to the hill before Mr. Fabionar won his first game and the match was over on the next game. H A T F I E L D /M C C OY S HOOTOUT by: RJ & Wild Bill The Southwest Oregon, APA presented their first annual Hatfield/McCoy Shootout pitting east against the west. Members from Josephine and Jackson Counties were invited to prove which side of the state has the best 8-ball shooters. The competitors took over The Break Room in Medford and the battle flourished on from 10am until the last shooter standing smiled broadly around 7pm. Men and women of all skill levels Jeremy Hughes bravely represented their side as The Break Room staff comforted them with kind words of encouragement and helped them nurse their wounds with an array of good food and refreshing drinks. When the chalk dust cleared, Jeremy “Ermy” David Nienow Hughes took the top spot and the biggest trophy. David Nienow gave it his very best in a close second and Cory Sweet was right on his heels in third place. The three received money awards along with their trophies and every participant will be wearing a commemorative T-shirt to prove they were there and survived an awesome day of great competition. Cory Sweet The East won boasting rights along with the now coveted “Golden Possum” trophy. The Golden Possum will spend the next year on display, letting all know that in 2006, The Eastern Hatfields showed the best stuff but the Western McCoys will undoubtedly be out in The Awesome force in 2007 to steal the title back. Pacific Crest did another great job of making the impossible happen on time, and on St Patrick’s day 2006, my birthday, the doors swung open and the party was on. Pacific Crest and all of the rest of us who put in all the long hours to make it happen have Mike and Brian’s capitol rule first in Mind (the finished product must be Fun). Getting things to turn out that way isn’t always fun but a lot of work. When I first saw it the space was the general storehouse for all of the collection items waiting for a place to go or left over from the last project. We began to bring the pool tables in pieces for the billiard room. No problem on the first one, but we couldn’t fit the second inside, so it went into the future bathroom. No room for the third table; it went into my already overfilled shop. The next time the back bar was in place and all the rest of the pool tables went to our new shop to be restored. I went back with Brian to lay out the tables so the lights could be placed. I then began to realize just how tough everyone’s job was going to be. The lights had to be hung overhead some 70 feet up. The bar was missing one end and the plans were out the window/but this Back stage area left over from the Vaudeville days was about to take a brand new look and two months later it is spectacular. The area itself is spectacular because of the neck bending effect of the vaulted ceiling which at seven stories the highest on the East side of Portland. As you stand at the entrance your eye catches the 20ft x 20ft canvas on the far wall. It was painted by Olivia Behm, Kolieha Bush, Joe Cotter, Lyle Hehn, Myrna Yoder, and my favorite artist Jennifer Joyce and directs your view upwards toward the Chandeliers saved from the 1920’s Oregon Bank that have been saved from the twenties, and tilts your head to the dizzying heights where the constellation of colored lights seven stories above. As you walk down the ramp to enter the room your eye catches the Neon signs hanging two stories up and you get the feeling of walking down an alley between two seven story buildings. You now can appreciate the pool tables from the twenties restored two factory condition. Now your eye can dwell on the back bar from the Oly Club in Centralia. Built at the turn of the century Honduras mahogany with heavy inlay was the style and the bar and back bar are an example. Ribbon grained mahogany accented with ebony, lemon wood, Zebrono, maple and mother of pearl. We found two Madisons, and a 5x10 Regent that fit the style that the bar set and built two brand new Sheehan Madison tables to match. As you stand at the bar to order a drink and check out the balls to try the tables, you get chance to admire the original canvas of the Taj Mahal that was a backdrop for the Vaudeville stage. Grab the balls and head to the tables. Every one plays as well as any one you ever tried. They were selected for the appearance but were engineered for performance. Pool has become more and more important to the McMenamins style of providing fun, spirits and food. The tables have the ability to keep the guests there to enjoy the second and third parts of the formula. Mike and Brian have provided the food and spirits and it is our job to see to it that the tables live up to expectations. The Bagdad now provides the perfect spot for an afternoon or evening of entertainment. A Movie, dinner, spirits, music and a couple games of pool or snooker. NWPA KICKS OFF 2006 SEASON by: Chris Rogers, Tournament Director
On March 18-19, the Northwest Women’s Pool Association held its first tour stop for 2006 at the Parlor Billiards and Spirits in Bellevue, WA. Keeping with its goal to be the top pool room on the West Coast, the Parlor, in addition to adding $750.00 cash, also purchased not one (1), but two (2) Qualifying spots to the Women’s Pro Tour. One for the BCA Championships in Las Vegas and one for the San Diego Classic. This news had spread across the country bringing players from not just the Northwest, but places like Calgary, Edmonton and even Florida. The news from the players meeting, while mostly tedious, was that Julie has us now in the 21 st Linda Carter Century as player packets will now be CD form. No more trees have to sacrifice themselves. Also, in an effort to get more part time or new players, there is a simple $10.00 additional charge for anyone to play as a non-member. This has been lowered from recent years of $20.00. But the big news was our full schedule of seven events. Five of which are WPBA Qualifiers. Please visit our websit: www.nwpatour.com for more info or Billiard Paper for schedule. The tournament itself, which started at 10am Saturday morning, had a deep field of 46 players and it would take till late evening just to bring the field down to the 16 players who would battle it out on Sunday. On the A side, Martha Hartsell defeated Liz Cole 7-5 and Cathy Metzinger got Kim Jones 7-4. In the point match it was back and forth to 4-4 before Cathy won 3 in a row to take it. On the B side, Kim then played Mona Remedios from Edmonton with Mona winning 7-3. Conversely, Linda Carter, who having lost to Kerry Impson early Saturday, had to fight through the B side, starting at 9am Sunday. Linda started off 7-0 against Mary Ellen Homenchuk from Surrey, BC, then got Ellen Van Buren from Florida in what may have been the match of the day, 7-6. Mary Hopkin then fell 7-3 and Liz Cole fell 7-4. Mona and Linda now played and Carter was now on a roll winning 7-3 and then getting Martha 7-2 for the B side point. Cathy had waited hours to play while Linda was in stroke and it showed with Linda in front early at 4-2 in a final race to 9. They traded games the rest of the way with each player holding break and the early lead paid off with Linda’s 9-6 victory. She pulled off the biggest and longest Sunday comeback in NWPA history, congrats Linda. (NWPA continued on page 29)
Josh Osterman Memorial Tournament Mr Ed’s hosted the Josh Osterman Memorial Tournament April 8th in Butte, Montana. Josh was tragically killed in a vehicle accident July 14, 2005. He was 24. Josh and his friends were planning on playing in the Anaconda Pool League as the “Pink Panthers” hence the pink shirts. Josh was to be their fourth player before the accident occured. that is the reason Glenn carries it. “Leather cases are too heavy.” Physical conditioning and playing despite various ailments that can interfere with your game is something that some pool players have to contend with and Glenn is no stranger to dealing with pain. We talked about some of the obstacles he has had to overcome. “I have a condition in my spine that’s not real good. It’s the opposite of scoliosis called ‘Sherman’s’. In scoliosis your spine is shaped in an ‘S’ but with Sherman’s it goes like a ‘backwards S’. I’m always fighting that, going to chiropractors and trying to exercise to be able to hit a lot of balls. I’m also thinking about eye surgery. I’ve tried wearing glasses but they are very awkward and you have to twist your neck around too much and I don’t like that. The biggest problem I see with glasses is that once you get into a match, a few minutes later you start to perspire a little bit and your glasses move around. I hate that part. I always have to fiddle with them.” Glenn also teaches pool, so I asked him if he had ever been beaten in a tournament by one of his students. “Yes, Scott Barnard comes to mind. There were a couple of kids I taught a long time ago that got to be really good and for one reason or another they had to get out of pool. They went to work. Scott went into trucking and he got out of it. I taught him for about six months and then worked with him for a few months more. Then he went out on his own and learned more and more and got to be a real fine

player. There was another young guy out in Boring, Oregon. His name was Mike Durr and boy did he get good and he had to quit. His family was in the construction business, so after finishing college he was working in the family business. When he was playing he started beating all the ‘A’ players – just running so many racks, they quit on him.” Glenn is currently teaching at Classic Billiards in Portland, Oregon and has a few students at the Cadillac Island Casino in Longview, Washington. Glenn is teaching some students that are showing promise and he hopes their games will greatly improve in the future. In closing Glenn remarked how fascinated he was by the Filipino philosophy of instructing pool players. Rumor has it that the players from Taiwan hired the Filipinos to teach them. The Filipino players matched up with the Taiwan players, the more experienced players teaching the talented younger players. This can been seen by looking at Alex Pagulayan, a very talented young player, who was taught by Jose Parica. Glenn remarked, “They are doing a fine job in teaching.” Glenn’s next challenges will be at the ACS Regional Championships in Canyonville, Oregon; BCA Nationals in Las Vegas, both in May. Glenn finished the interview by saying that he needed to get his shoulder healed first. You have to be careful if there is any cut angle or you use any side spin on the cue ball. Either one of these will put some corresponding side spin on the object ball. With the target in place, try some cuts and side spin and see how much that affects the shot. For example, if you shot X with right english on the cue ball, the object ball would have left english and would tend to go “long” and hit on the short rail. The two balls by Z have a problem with the side pocket for this system. Can you get them to bank by using speed or spin to cheat the system? You can also set up a target for the side pocket,
which should be at the same distance from the table and directly in line with the side pockets. Long banks should work similarly, but the shots themselves are much harder since they are twice as long. When using the system in play, your opponent will probably not let you use a barstool like this. You can measure off the right distance with your cue stick, but mostly you have to develop a feel for where the target is. The point of having a visible target on the barstool is so that you can develop that feel and familiarity more quickly.

The judging is going to be done by the staff and the DJ. Judging is based on overall performance and crowd appeal. We’re also going to have a category for the worst performance. People who are nervous or afraid of performing can still compete for the worst category. For each night of the first four weeks there will be prizes for the top three – things like T-shirts, hats and other giveaway items. For the grand prize in the championship round we’ll do $100 to the winner and $50 to each of the runner-ups.
