Will Rogers said “Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there.” I hear what he is saying but, sometimes I just want to sit there. Sometimes I feel like I have been running on that track since the day I was born. There have been many detours off that track, some great and some not so good at all but I have never had many long delays. Right now I am at that point where my body is telling me I need a lay-over. Maybe you are like me and you keep telling your body just to hold on. I am constantly saying to myself that maybe next week or at least next month I will get that much needed break. Lately though, my body is calling me a liar and telling me that it is not waiting on me to “decide” if I really need that break. That might not have been the best word to use because that is what I feel like my body is trying to do....BREAK! “You can’t do that to me”, I scream. I am on the right track and things are moving fast so how do you expect me to take a break? Maybe one of you can tell me why my body is getting older but in my mind, although I don’t think I am Twenty-one again, I don’t think I am that old. I can still dance. It might not look as good as it once did. In fact, I don’t have to put as much energy to it as I did when I was younger. I can just start the movement and it will continue on it’s own for a good five to ten minutes. The only problem is by the time it settles down, I am completely exhausted. A good friend of mine who is a nutritionist is trying her best to help me get some energy back. It is the food we eat. My question is why can’t that pizza that I so love not fuel my body better than those vegetables that I have to force myself to put on my plate. Is Potato Chips not a vegetable? Is Strawberry Pie not a fruit? Surely these things are going to be in Heaven! I am convinced that when we get to heaven, everyone is going to be fluffy and God will tell me I had it right all along. After all, clouds are fluffy. Yes, I do know that I am speaking out of my mind. Although, they did do a study about calories in and calories out and even the guy who ate all his calories in junk food but burned off more than he took in, lost weight! They say it is portion control but have you seen the portions they say you should eat? I can always play the “It’s not fair” card because that is the truth. I have skinny friends that eat the same things and sometimes more of it than I do and they don’t have a problem. Now that is really, really not fair. Change takes some getting used to. Eating different takes some getting used to. Exercising definitely takes some getting used to and I am not really convinced that there are people out there that REALLY love to exercise, even when they say they do. Some people have said to me “Once you get into it you will really love it!” I was not born yesterday. I do, however, know that this body is not giving me maximum performance and it is demanding I make some changes. Will you pray for me? I need all the help I can get and some “MIGHTY” help from above would be great but I do know I have to put a lot of effort into this. Either I do this now or a really long “lay-over” is in the future. Just sitting there is not an option for me but a short lay-over would not be a bad thing. That is if I use it wisely. What about you....are you wearing yourself out on that track or are you sitting too long and in danger of getting run over? Just remember though this one very important piece of advice. Most vegetables are something God invented to let women get even with their children. A fruit is a vegetable with looks and money. Plus, if you let fruit rot, it turns into wine, something brussels sprouts never do. (Unknown Source) Thanks so much for reading Sophie Woman’s Magazine.

Dirty Diaper Drama It’s time.

Well, people keep telling me that it is. I, for one, am refusing to listen. Try as I may, I can’t deny the way Addison walks up to me, her face contorted with discomfort and one hand digging beneath the waistband of her pants and saying those little three words I wanted postponed for at least another six months. No, scratch that, another year. “I pee pee.” I knew this was coming, and I knew it was getting close because Addison had taken to playing with the toilet. Not that I let her or anything, she just became fascinated with throwing things in and trying to flush it. That’s totally normal, right? Right? Anyway, I was really hoping to make it to two and a half, three, maybe even five years before having to deal with potty training again. On that note, if her future husband wants to educate her in the finer arts of potty practice, I’d be more than happy with that. But here we are, and it’s time. I’m not new to this, though, and I think that’s the whole reason

for my trepidation this go round. I can remember that at one point while teaching Savannah, I was ready to toss her training potty out the window and laugh maniacally as it rolled down the hill outside. There was also all of the accidents we had - the most embarrassing one happening right smack dab in the middle of Piggly Wiggly’s baking goods aisle. I just didn’t have the heart to tell the man with the mop that it wasn’t Mello Yellow. And of course, I haven’t mentioned the tears and begging that occurred both on my part for Savannah to potty and on Savannah’s part asking me to let her off of the toilet so she could play. So, I hope you’ll excuse me when I say that I’m not the least bit excited over this little development. More importantly, I hope that I’ve learned enough from Savannah’s training that I won’t have another weird moment in Kohl’s saying loudly, “If you pee on Ariel you will hurt her feelings, now is that what you want?” Wish me luck.

Big Dreams, Big Opportunity Big Hair. That’s what you get this April when Clater Kaye Productions presents Hairspray at the Old Rock School in Valdese. Hairspray is the raucous musical comedy hit that was first penned by John Waters in the original 1988 movie that first started the career of Ricki Lake. That film became a cult classic with enough following to turn it into a Broadway musical. The story was revamped and composer Marc Shaiman was brought in to give the music that unique 60’s sound that contemporary artists love. A smash on Broadway winning the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2003 , Hairspray became a box office dream when it once again became a film starring John Travolta, Zac Efron and Queen Latifah. Now the show that once starred Matthew Morrison from Glee hits our area stage. “We are very excited to bring Hairspray to this area, especially since we are combining our local cast with a new production company based in Charlotte.” Said Clater Kaye’s Executive Director Lesia Kaye. “I first made contact with Monica Pettiford of Porch Productions toward the end of last year with an idea that we could collaborate on this project. We have already had successful runs of Les Miserables, Crazy For You, and A Chorus Line here but for Hairspray we needed to add a cast of ethnic minorities to make the story complete. When only a few minorities auditioned locally, I called Monica.” Monica Pettiford is the brainchild behind Porch Productions. “It’s the place where I sit on my porch and come up with ideas that will help my community. When I got the call from Lesia, I was all in.” Monica Ife Pettiford, has worked extensively in the logistics, event management and operations field since graduating from Queens University of Charlotte in 1998 with a BA in History. In addition, Ms. Pettiford worked as Program Director for the Afro-American Children’s Theatre (Charlotte, NC) for 4 years, producing and directing staged children’s theatre, workshops, summer arts camps, and travel camps emphasizing arts and culture. These programs exposed youth and families to the vast dynamics of art and theatre. Additionally, Ms. Pettiford has written, directed and produced several staged plays including Black Nativity, A Mother’s Love, Tremonisha and the Life and Times of Malcolm X. With over 10 years of previous working experience with the YMCA of Greater Charlotte and Greensboro, Ms. Pettiford has a passion for working with young people and helping them to reach their goals. She works with the youth at St. Paul’s Baptist church near downtown Hickory, where many of the cast worships, and where two of the performances will be held. St. Paul’s is a very active church in the Black Community that is always looking for a way to help the underserved in their area. They were more than glad to provide a local venue for the Charlotte area shows as they convert the large church multipurpose gymnasium into the theatrical space for this production. With the majority of the cast coming from the Hickory area with Clater Kaye, and most of the minority cast from Charlotte being provided by Porch Productions, rehearsal logistics were an issue. It takes true passion and dedication to put this particular show together because we are working with two production companies, essentially two casts, in two different cities at the same time.” Says Robert Clater, Producting Artistic Director of Clater Kaye.

We had been entrenched in our production of High School Musical, while Monica was doing The Black Nativity, so it wasn’t until recently that both casts got together for the first time. It was very exciting to finally meet the Charlotte cast. It really energized the company” said Mikaela Fleming who stars as Tracy Turnblad. Because of conflicts in schedules, Clater and Kaye, who serve as Director and Choreographer, travel weekly to Charlotte to rehearse with the African American cast. The logistical split within the performing company may serve the cast well as the story, set in Baltimore 1962 centers around a segregated teen dance show that becomes integrated. Similarly as logistics demand, the Charlotte cast and the Hickory cast have each rehearsed separately, only coming together now towards the end of the rehearsal period and share the stage together. “It provides an interesting sense of verisimilitude,” says John David Crosby who plays Corny Collins. “I’m so excited for this!” says Clayton Stephenson, a Porch Productions cast member who attends the Northwest School of the Arts in Charlotte. “I just love to sing!” And sing he does, as do all the cast provided by Porch Productions. Most have a musical background rooted in the traditions of the gospel sound found in the African –American churches. It promises to be very exciting. Licenced by Music Theatre International, Hairpray is presented by Clater Kaye Productions, in association with Porch Productions on April 8-10, 15-17 at the Old Rock Auditorium in Valdese, and April 29-30 at St Paul’s Baptist Church in Charlotte. Strawberry Muffin Recipe Easy recipe for strawberry muffins.

Ingredients: 2 1/2 cups flour 1/2 cup sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 cup buttermilk 1/3 cup melted butter 2 eggs, slightly beaten 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 pint fresh strawberries, hulled and chopped 1/2 cup strawberry preserve or softened jam strawberry halves for decorating Method: Preheat oven to 400°F. Spray muffin tin with nonstick cooking spray or line muffin cups with paper cupcake liners. In a large bowl combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt, stir well until all ingredients are well blended. In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, butter, eggs and vanilla. Make a well in the middle of the dry ingredients and pour liquid mixture in and the strawberries. Reserve some strawberries for topping. Using a large spoon, gently fold ingredients just until moist. Do not over mix. Spoon the batter evenly into 12 muffin cups. Pour 1 tsp. strawberry preserve or jam onto each muffin and sprinkle some strawberry pieces. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or till done. Decorate each muffin with strawberry halves.

Long Term Care Expenses: You Can’t Afford Not To Plan By: Casey M. Winebarger, Esq.

We’ve all heard the statistics about our aging population. This year, the first Baby Boomers will turn 65 and enter retirement. Nearly all of us have a parent or grandparent whose health is beginning to decline, making long term nursing home care a more prevalent worry in our lives. With the average cost of skilled nursing facilities skyrocketing to around $70,000 per year, planning to cover the cost of this care is becoming more important than ever. The options include private pay, long term care insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid. Few have the assets for private pay, and many folks do not have long term care insurance. Medicare will pay only under certain circumstances, and coverage is limited to 100 consecutive days at a time. That leaves Medicaid as the most viable option for most people. Medicaid is often associated with the poor and impoverished. Indeed, to be eligible for Medicaid assistance with nursing home care, the applicant can have no more than $2,000 in countable assets. Certain assets are not counted, such as the applicant’s home, one vehicle, and personal household items, and are therefore exempt from Medicaid consideration. If the applicant is married, the countable assets of both spouses are considered, regardless of in whose name they are titled. The applicant’s spouse is given some protection, however, if he or she does not reside in a nursing home. This protection is called the Community Spouse Resource Allowance, or CSRA. The CSRA is based on the amount of assets the couple owns at the time the applicant enters the nursing home, even if Medicaid is not applied for until months or years later. For that reason, an asset assessment should be obtained from the Department of Social Services when the applicant enters the nursing home so that assets can be established and valued as of that date.

While the exact calculations are complex, as a general rule the community spouse is allowed to retain approximately half of the married couple’s total assets as the CSRA, up to a maximum of $109,560. The other half is attributed to the institutionalized spouse and must be spent down to $2,000 or less before the applicant will be eligible for Medicaid. There are strict limitations about how assets can be spent down. The funds can be used to purchase an irrevocable, prepaid funeral contract, household items, a new vehicle, or term life insurance; to pay off debts; or to make improvements to the applicant’s home. Funds cannot be used to purchase investment items such as gold coins or very expensive jewelry, as these will be considered countable assets. Furthermore, the applicant cannot purchase whole life insurance or most types of annuities. Medicaid also does not allow uncompensated transfers of assets (i.e., gifts) to someone other than a spouse. When the application is made, Medicaid looks to see if any such gifts have been made in the prior five years. If so, a sanction period of Medicaid ineligibility is imposed. Currently, the sanction period is one month for every $5,500 of gifts made, and it does not begin until the applicant has been admitted to a nursing home and is otherwise eligible for Medicaid. As the law now stands, the gifted property can be transferred back to the applicant and the sanction period will be reduced or eliminated proportionately. There is no guarantee, however, that this rule will not change in the future.

In addition to satisfying the asset qualifications, Medicaid applicants must also pass a monthly income test. The amount of monthly income that an applicant can have and still qualify for Medicaid depends on the level of care that the applicant receives in the nursing home. Medicaid assigns a rate of payment to each level of care. So long as the applicant’s countable monthly income is less than the Medicaid rate of payment, the applicant is eligible to receive Medicaid. Countable income is defined as the applicant’s total monthly income, less a $30 per month exclusion for personal needs and deductions for medical expenses not covered by Medicaid, such as over-the-counter medications. If the applicant is married, the community spouse is allowed to retain his or her own income and is also allocated a certain portion of the applicant’s income. The applicant’s remaining countable income must be paid each month toward the nursing home bill, and Medicaid will pay the rest. Finally, once a Medicaid recipient passes away, Medicaid can pursue estate recovery. This is a process by which Medicaid seeks to recover what it has spent on behalf of the recipient from the recipient’s probate estate (that is, assets that do not pass to a joint owner or by beneficiary designation). Medicaid cannot pursue estate recovery if the Medicaid recipient has a surviving spouse or surviving child under age 21.

If a person has not obtained long term care insurance, then Medicaid could be the only option for him or her to pay for long term care expenses. The good news is that there are certain strategies that can be implemented to help a person qualify for Medicaid assistance while preserving as many assets as possible for a spouse or for future generations. Because of the five year look back period for asset transfers, Medicaid planning is best undertaken early on, several years before the person expects to need to enter a nursing home. In addition, folks should ensure that they have executed durable powers of attorney with proper language in them that would allow their designated attorneys in fact to undertake the necessary transactions on their behalf to implement a Medicaid planning strategy in the event that they become incapacitated in the future and unable to handle their own affairs. One thought keeps capturing my mind, and most likely yours too if you have been tuning in… many people seem to think they deserve the title of ‘master’ (or American Idol in this case) while clearly lacking the discipline and effort required to develop great skill. While it is fun to watch the contestants who seem to show up just to give the judges a good laugh, I have especially enjoyed seeing the incredible talent, preparation and uniqueness exemplified by many of the contestants. And so it is with life… I have always had a deep appreciation for individuals who are discontent with mediocre and who long to MASTER their own areas of influence and passion. Just recently, I faced one of those professional development crossroads. I felt that I should continue seeking excellence and advanced training in at least one of my areas of professional pursuit. As a long-time Physical Therapist, I have contemplated returning to college to advance my PT degree in keeping with the higher standers of today’s graduates emerging with their Doctorate. While I practiced for many years, I have focused most of my professional time in the last 10 years in the area of Life Coaching and Speaking. With the fluctuating economy, should I take the more secure route of investing in advancing my health care degree? Or should I follow my passion, pursuing the status of “Master” in my current field of coaching and speaking? The beliefs we have about God, morals, ethics, and human rights are foundational to our character. What we hold to be true about our creator, right & wrong, and the precious nature of life give us boundaries to live a life without regrets. Family, friends, books, magazines, movies, and television shape our belief system from an early age. As we grow and mature, we begin to consciously choose one belief over another. Elizabeth is passionate about her family. She puts others before her own needs the vast majority of the time. She is a multi-tasker who makes a list and ticks off her to-dos with finesse. And deep down inside she knows she has something of value to give to the world. In Elizabeth’s case, she believes that there is a book in her belly. Elizabeth is naïve to the fact that she has two conflicting beliefs. On one hand she believes her book can serve the world in a powerful way. But on the other hand, she believes the process is going to be “hard.” Three times today in a one-hour coaching session, Elizabeth lamented with great ease, “hard”, “hard”, “hard.” I suggested a time to write. Immediately she found a flaw and stated, “It’s hard to get up early.” I offered a key contact she could make in publishing. Reluctantly, she agreed but in the next sentence “I don’t know. I am not a people person. This is going to be hard.” I celebrated her wit and humor. Without missing a beat, she told me, “I try. But, it’s hard work to be funny.”

Elizabeth has a belief that every idea I offer her is difficult, people are scary, and that she must struggle with her own giftings instead of simply embracing them. She believes her dream to write a book is just plain old “hard”. Elizabeth created this obstacle in her own mind and gave it power. Or made it a belief. I asked her to tell me about her belief that everything is “hard”. She did not know what I was talking about. I cited my observations of how easily “hard” rolled out of her mouth. She was stunned. “I didn’t know I thought everything was hard.” This belief had come into her life at some point and she was naïve to its impact on her ability to see what was possible for her and her dream. I requested that she begin a journal how many times in a day she framed what lay in front of her as “hard”. As we closed the coaching session, I asked a simple question about how her girls in college where doing. Excitedly she told me, “Rachel is moving into an apartment with a roommate.” I celebrated with her. How wonderful! Her daughter was experiencing a huge rite of passage. What a gift to have a space to call your own. In the next sentence in the middle of our excitement about this big event Elizabeth blurted out, “I told Rachel having a roommate is going to be “hard”. I stopped her in her tracks. “Whoa, Did you hear what you just said?” “What?” “You told her it would be “hard”!” Then there was silence as she realized how deeply ingrained “hard” had become in her belief system. In a shallow breathy voice she stated, “Oh, my goodness…I did. I am teaching Rachel “hard.” This was an epiphany. She realized that she was handing down “hard” to her daughter. She knew she had instilled great faith, great morals, and great love into Rachel’s life. However, she saw clearly she was also instilling “hard”. Now Elizabeth was alive, alert, and awake. Elizabeth made up her mind to replace “hard” with “possible”. Like Elizabeth, take an inventory of your beliefs. Watch your language. Journal your activities. Sophisticated women know what they believe. Shedding Light on Daylight Saving Time Each spring, regions around the world adjust the clocks to move one hour ahead. This contributes to more sunlight during the evening hours and, theoretically, helps conserve energy. Daylight savings time (DST) was the brainchild of Benjamin Franklin, who felt it would help increase productivity in the early evening by increasing the hours of sunlight during the warmer months. Franklin also felt DST would be a good way to save on candles, among other energy used to artificially light areas once the sun had set. Some people have mistakenly thought that DST was created to benefit the farmer. But no studies have proven that more sunlight in the evening positively affects a farmer’s schedule or the growing cycle of crops. DST also doesn’t have too great an impact on energy conservation. Many studies have shown little to no energy savings from having more sunlight in the evening. That is because even if the lights are turned off, other things are turned on, such as air conditioners and pool filters for individuals enjoying the added sunlight hours instead of retiring early to bed. There have been points throughout history when DST did help conserve energy. This occurred mainly during the World Wars, when conservation of energy helped divert money and fuel sources toward the war effort. While it may not help save energy, a 2007 study by RAND determined that DST does help reduce vehicular crashes, perhaps due to better visibility when on the road in the spring and summer. DST is now done largely out of habit. In the United States, from 1986 to 2006, DST began on the first Sunday in April and continued through the last Sunday in October. However, starting in 2007, it is now observed from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November, adding about a month of extra sunlight in the evening. DST is not required in the U.S., but if states do participate, they must do so according to the federal schedule. Arizona, Hawaii, areas of Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands are among the U.S. areas that do not participate in DST, choosing instead to operate on standard time all year long. In 2011, DST will occur on March 13 at 2 a.m. Individuals will be “springing ahead,” moving the clock an hour forward and losing an hour of sleep. As people hit the snooze alarm another time, they can thank Benjamin Franklin for that lost hour of sleep.

Although most people lose an hour of sleep the first night of daylight savings time, the idea behind it was to make people more productive and save energy during the evening hours.

Well, it’s time for Daytona…the NASCAR Super Race!!! By the time this issue comes to print we’ll be a few races into the season…let me share my love for this sport with you. This month’s article will still be about love, but a different kind of love. I want to tell you about all the pit crews in NASCAR and what they are preparing for…what they’re going through. Since the holidays ended and the guys have returned from vacations, they have been doing pit practice 3 times a week and lifting weights and doing special exercises to help them balance and keep from getting hurt. Most of the guys who are on pit crews pull double-duty…meaning that they also work on the cars. These guys are like supermen because of their extreme dedication and energy levels. Let me tell you…the teams are already exhausted and they haven’t even begun the first race! The actual schedule started weeks ago however, with practices all over the country. Goodyear has practices to work on tire compounds, NASCAR has practices to work on aero packages and the teams have been practicicng at tracks and in the wind tunnels to work on their individual issues as well. NASCAR is an EXTREME sport, with the longest competition schedule in professional sports and more travel miles than most businessmen log over a year. The guys work and play hard, in the most extreme conditions, from below freezing to 120 degrees in the pits…and they wear triple lined firesuits with helmets and gloves!!! NASCAR is NOT for sissies! You don’t EVER hear the guys complain…even when it’s pouring rain… Just because it rains doesn’t mean the pits don’t have to be set up. The guys in the pits, will get set up, ready to race…and then wait…sometimes for 8-10 hours, for a break in the weather conditions so that they can get the race started. Those are the days I won’t miss…the days my back felt like it was going to break from standing all day…just waiting. Did you know that pit stops are marked off and coreographed like a dance? Let me tell you some things to watch for: When the guys jump off the wall, they already know what PLAY is being run…depending upon what lap, the amount of gas in the car, the amount of gas needed in the car, how many laps have been run since the last pit stop, what the car is doing on the track…if it’s LOOSE or TIGHT, how many laps are left in the race and their position with respect to the leaders. These are just SOME of the considerations that a Crew Chief will think about before telling a driver to come down pit road. So, the guys know what play to run and as they step off the wall, normally with the left foot, to keep their bodies facing the cars entering pit road, they run to the right side first. The front tire carrier follows the front tire changer, who follows the jack man. The rear guys have to wait for the car to slide by, so the fornt guys have a headstart. As the rear tire changer hits his lug nuts (usually all 5 in about 1 second) the jack man steps in and pulls his tire out for him, so he doesn’t have to put his gun down. This actually evens the rear guys up with the front guys, so that they finish on the right side together. Now as they get up to go to the left side of the car, they usually take the first step with the inside foot. (Left for the front tire changer and right for the rear tire changer)By the time the changers get up, the tire carriers are already on the way to the wall to get the left side tires. The rear tire carrier is

already in place waiting, as the rear changer CROSSES in front of the gas man, who waits before stepping in with a second can of gas. The front tire carrier HOLDS at the wall waiting for the jackman and front changer to CROSS in front of him, then he steps into place to throw in the left front tire. Unless the Crew Chief called for a spring rubber to be put in or pulled out of the rear spring, the tire carriers will be in perfect unison as they place the new tires on and in about 9/10’s of a second all 5 new lug nuts will be tightened and the jack man will drop the car to a cloud of smoke and burning rubber as the driver speeds away. All in about 13.5 seconds!!! Twelve second pit stops are rare at Daytona, due to tighter wheel openings that help with aerodynamics. Now, as the pit stops are going on, watch for cars sliding through the pit stalls because the speedway break packages are as light as they can make them.. unlike at a place like Martinsville where they are very thick and heavy. Drivers rarely touch the breaks at speedways, except to come into the pits. Couple this with the higher speeds and a couple of drivers almost always slide through their pit stall and have to back up. This totally throws off the pit crew…but they actually practice for this senario leading up to the race. Add to this, the fact that Daytona does not have very big pits and the drivers really have to be on their game to help their pit crews save time. For every foot the driver misses the marks, the team has to take extra steps to run down the car. You see, they are positioned on the wall based upon where they WANT the car to stop. After 15 years and somewhere close to 100,000 pit stops, both practice and race time…I still get goosebumps. Pit Crews are some of the most gifted and special athletes on this planet…and they do NOT get the credit they deserve. One final note to leave you with. The level of excellence expected from pit crews is just NOT REALISTIC! Imagine a basketball player who shoots 60% over his career. That guy will likely make millions of dollars and make the Basketball Hall of Fame. Baseball players who strike out 7 out of 10 times will almose always make the Baseball Hall of Fame with a 300 batting average. Those kinds of stats will get you FIRED in NASCAR. I hope you’ll watch the races and I hope you’ll have a greater understanding and appreciation of what the pit crews are doing. I hope you’ll fall in love with them as deeply as I am. Last Sunday, January 30th many of Hickory’s talented singers had the opportunity to audition for NBC Executives at a one-on-one audition in Atlanta, GA. Beverly Brock, local agent with The Brock Agency, had been asked to help locate talent for NBC’s America’s Got Talent, Season SIX. People who live in Hickory and the surrounding area know what great talent we have. America’s Got Talent asked Miss Brock to submit mp3 files or links of talent and/or bands. From the number of talents submitted locally, Chris Sepulveda, Lauren and Brooke DeLeary, Makenzie Marie and the 20-20 Rock Band (Dr. Brain Adair, guitar, Dr. Ron Amaker, vocalist, Allen Finley, lead Guitar and vocalist, and lead vocalists Ray Lovie, bass, Dr. Trey Oursler, percussion and Dr. Reg Williams, keys) were given the opportunity to have a personal audition with NBC , and their “links” submitted. These talented people might have the opportunity to appear in the national TV competition on America’s Got Talent to be filmed in L.A. They are waiting for the next round for a call-back. By the end of March, 2011, they will know who will make it. The talent selected will be in L.A., with all expenses paid, for the taping of Season Six, America’s Got Talent. We will keep you informed as to who makes the next round. We are proud of the Hickory talent who auditioned and who submitted their “links” for screening. Never stop submitting your talent! Nobody can predict when you will have that once in a lifetime opportunity. Those talents, who did not receive a personal audition, were permitted to go to the open-call. Don’t Scratch That Itch by Gwen Smith

Today’s Truth

“When tempted, no one should say, ‘God is tempting me.’ For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed” (James 1:1314, NIV).

Friend To Friend

I once woke up with a spider bite that was the size of a quarter. It may as well have been the size of North Carolina for as much as it itched! I was half-tempted to scratch off my arm. That nasty bite was just begging to be scratched. However, I have learned a thing or two in my thirty-something years, and one thing I know for sure: it is best not to scratch this type of itch. It would be like opening a bag of chips with the naive intention of eating only one (yeah, right!) I knew that if I started scratching my bug bite, it would be nearly impossible to stop. I would regret having ever started. Super-itchy bug bites are a lot like temptations. Temptations are itchy! They call on us with urgent voices that scream, “Scratch me! Scratch me!” Yet, in all reality, a little scratch will not satisfy temptation’s itch at all ... it will just make matters worse. When we scratch the itch of temptation, the itch does not diminish. To the contrary, it increases. The Bible teaches us that when we resist temptation, our faith is then mobilized and the muscles of our character are strengthened. Let’s look at what that looked like for a guy named Joseph. (For the full account, pause here and read Genesis 39.) Joseph was a man of integrity who did right in the eyes of the Lord, but he definitely faced some temptation! He was seduced by temptation in the form of his master’s wife, Mrs. Potiphar. You see, Mrs. Potiphar wanted her husband’s right-hand man to sleep with her, and she pursued him with aggression. Hers was a hand-delivered invitation for Joseph to sin that had itchy written all over it. But he flat-out refused. His heart was determined to honor God. “My master has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?” Though she spoke to Joseph day after day, he refused to go to bed with her or even be with her (Genesis 39:9-10). Temptation chased Joseph relentlessly. Oh, how he must have longed for the itching to stop! To give in would be sinful. To give in was simply not an option for this young man of character. So on the day that Potiphar’s wife caught him by the cloak and begged again for Joseph to sleep with her, Joseph ran out of the house. He ran from that tempting situation as fast as his legs would carry him. God was honored in Joseph’s response. He ran from temptation. We would be wise to do the same. What do you need to run from today? Have you determined in your heart to honor God in everything? Temptation comes in all shapes and sizes. It might be calling your name from your pantry - or from your computer - or from a bottle - or from another cubicle in your office. What temptations do you face

today? Name them and run the other way! Don’t scratch that itch! Determine in your heart that you will choose the path that brings honor to God, and call on Him for strength. I realize that dealing with temptation is not easy. When that nasty spider bit my arm, I struggled not to scratch the bite. I had to re-direct my thinking to persevere through the temptation. When we come face to face with temptations, God’s strength is always available to us. We need God’s strength. Ours will fail us. Friend, when we resist temptation, we get to experience the peace and protection of God, our faith is mobilized and the muscles of our character are strengthened.

Let’s Pray

Dear Lord, I need You so much. I constantly find myself being dragged away and enticed by temptation. Please give me strength to run the other way, and give me the wisdom to run to Your arms. I really want to be a woman of godly character. Help me be that woman! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Contemplate the following questions: What have you been dragged away and enticed by in the past? How did you respond? How have you grown from those experiences? Though our sovereign God allows trials to enter our lives, He does not ever tempt us. (James 1) Tuck that truth in your heart today, and the next time you experience a temptation - great or small - recognize that the enemy is behind the allure. Then tell him to get behind you and pray that Jesus will re-direct your thinking.

Question: After shaving under my arms, I always get some sort of irritation. Sometimes, I have red itchy bumps, or a burning sensation. Then for the next few days when I apply my deodorant, I get an extreme burning sensation. Just when all that starts to go away, then the hair has grown back and it’s time to go through it all again. What can I do to stop this cycle of pain? Answer: If you want this vicious cycle to stop, there is only one thing to do. You have to STOP SHAVING. I know that sounds radical, but there are other options for having smooth, hairless underarms. I would recommend getting your underarms waxed. Waxing removes the hair from the root, so when it grows back, you do not have that horrible prickly feeling, which in turn causes that red, itchy irritation. Contrary to the old wives tale, waxing will NOT cause the hair to grow back thicker and darker. In fact, the hair will grow in having a very fine point, so you probably won’t even know it has grown back, until you look to see if it’s there. Waxing is inexpensive and the pain factor is worth the weeks of hairlessness. I think the pain is minimal, and the waxing service is over so quickly that your not really aware of any pain. Just think of it this way, You can have 2 seconds of a stinging sensation from waxing or weeks of razor burn and prickly hair irritation from shaving. For me the choice is clear. However, if you feel waxing isn’t for you, a laser treatment may be just your thing. A laser hair removal treatment will permanently remove the hair, freeing you from the burden of shaving or waxing. Lasers are more expensive, but it usually only requires 1-3 treatments to be hair free for life. The laser procedure, feels like someone snapping you with a rubber band, but just like waxing, it is over very quickly. If you still insist on shaving, here are a few things you can do to help ease some of the irritations. First, if bathing, let your underarms soak in the warm water for a while to soften the skin and hair, this will allow you to shave closer. Use a razor that hasn’t been used more than 5-10 shaves. Using a razor with multiple blades will increase the closeness of shave, as well as using shaving cream. Shave against the growth pattern, and stretch your underarm as tight as possible while shaving, this also will help cut the hair as close as possible. Finally, I would recommend not using deodorant. Deodorants have ingredients such as aluminum chlorohydrate or aluminum zirconium that can cause skin irritations, especially directly after shaving. Instead of commercial deodorant, I recommend using baking soda. After bathing, dry your underarms completely and sprinkle baking soda into palm of hand and pat the powder onto your underarms. Baking soda is great for keeping you dry and odor free. Wether you choose to wax, laser, or shave, always remember to treat your underarm skin just like the rest of your body. You should occasionally, lightly exfoliate and apply a moisture rich lotion. This works best, if done before bedtime, allowing the lotion to absorb through the night.

RUBBER STRETCH TUBING EXERCISES If you do a lot of traveling, or are looking for a method of exercise that is lightweight, inexpensive and takes up little space, then Rubber Stretch Tubing is for you. Long used in physical therapy and rehabilitation, stretch tubing offers a means of strength training that emphasizes both eccentric and concentric contraction of the muscles. In other words, like working with weights, you have resistance in both the beginning phase of the exercise and the return phase of the exercise. Studies have shown that a significant benefit is achieved by resisting the pull on the return phase of the exercise. The secret of successful resistance training is to constantly challenge your muscles by increasing the resistance level, number of repetitions or sets. A repetition, also known as “reps” are the number of times an exercise movement is done consecutively without rest. One complete series of continuous, consecutive repetitions is called a “Set”. Most tubing manufacturers make several levels of resistance: the thicker the tube, the more the resistance. Stand on the mid-point of the tubing so that the distance from foot to handle is the same on both sides. Bring your arms up so that the tubing runs behind your arms, palms facing forward, and your hands are on either side of your head, just above shoulder height. Knees should be slightly bent, feet shoulder width apart and your toes turned slightly outward.

Step 2-Slowly lower your hips until your upper thighs are almost parallel to the floor. Try not to let your knees extend past your toes as you come down. Pause at the bottom and slowly return to standing position. Tip: Keep your feet firmly on the floor and squat only as low as you can with proper technique. Use light resistance tubing or no resistance the first time you perform this exercise. Work up to two sets of 12-15 repetitions.

I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three. ~Elayne Boosler Now I happen to think that is very smart and that is why I am passing it on to you. Maybe one of you might be like I used to be....a “scaredy cat”! It was my grandmother’s fault and let me tell you, she was afraid of everything. She lived in the country and did not have indoor plumbing. When it got dark outside and she needed to go to the “little house behind the big house”, well, one of us kids had to go with her. In the country it was really dark outside at night. There was no street lights at all on that dirt road and the houses were far apart. Even if a neighbor was still up you didn’t get light from their house. One night she got me out of bed and said I had to go stand watch with her. I really don’t know what I was supposed to be watching for, especially since you could not see anything. So I chose to go with her. I use the word “chose” reluctantly because it was my choice either to go or get a lickin’ from a hickory switch! If you ever had one of those, you understand. I should have taken the lickin’ that night because let me tell you, I have never been the same since. Here we go, slowly placing one foot in front of the other, hoping not to step in a hole and break a leg or worse, step on some “fertilizer” left by one of the hound dogs that was fast asleep on the porch. Don’t ever get a hound dog and think they will be a good guard dog. Even the opossums didn’t cause them to stir at night. I would guess it took a good 30 minutes or so for us to make our way there. You never wanted to have those things too close to the house, you understand. My daddy used to say it was for sanitary reasons but I think it was for the smell. To this day, I can’t even smell a skunk. My granny made her way in and I was faithfully standing watch. We had only been there a few minutes when all of a sudden, the screams that came from the wooden toilet, well, they would have made your blood curl. Before, I could even turn around to see what was wrong, the door burst open and out my granny runs, knocking me over, as she hightailed it toward the house. She never even gave me a second thought or cared if I survived what horrible fate she thought was taking place. What kind of thoughts do you think can go through a young child’s mind during a time like this? Every thing you can think of, I thought of that night. Let me tell you, life has never been the same for me. She told my daddy that someone was in there with her but we knew that was not so, because we were poor and couldn’t afford a two-seater. We speculated that maybe that “hole” went all the way to hell and it was Satan himself after my Granny that night. All I know is she left me to defend myself against whatever monster was lurking that night. I told my daddy and my granny they could do whatever form of torture they wanted to, but I was not going back to that outhouse for anyone. Let the dogs go! I do need to tell you that I am not afraid any longer.....when the sun is up...unless there is a spider! I am afraid of spiders but that is another story for another time. Now I know what the therapists all say, we have to face our fears and I think I have done a good job of that...especially since we don’t have outhouses any longer. I do have to confess, I get a little freaky to go to the bathroom at night when the power goes out. Oh, yeah, and I don’t like hound dogs....give me a Chihuahua anytime. So, for the locks...I wonder how hard they are to install.

We all know we can lose weight by eating fewer calories, but one university professor from Kansas took this concept a step further. He decided to do an unscientific experiment to see if it mattered what type of calories he consumed; or in other words, if the foods really mattered. He lived on 1800 calories a day, but these were high calorie fattening foods like Twinkies. How do you think it worked? Interestingly, he lost 15 pounds, but he sure didn’t feel good. He said that his head felt like it was “in a vice”. He also acknowledged that the risks of this diet long term involved high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, and possibly diabetes. All very dangerous side effects. Bottom line, it’s more than just calories that matter. The calorie in, calorie out theory teaches us that it takes 3500 calories to create 1 pound of body mass. If you eat more than you burn, you will gain weight. If you expend more than you eat, you will lose weight. While the professor mentioned above was not trying to prove that his diet is healthy, he did succeed in showing just because you lose weight on a particular diet does not mean that it is healthy. Losing weight should not be the only goal of eating right. Instead of worrying so much about calories we should be worried about what we are ingesting. Weight loss in and of itself does not mean that one is healthy. Long term ingestion of the chemicals found in concoctions like Twinkies is dangerous and should not be encouraged. This unscientific study does not address many issues that other long term studies have addressed. However, there is no doubt that lowering your calorie intake can be advantageous, especially as you age. If you want to try to control your calorie intake, go ahead, you will indeed lose weight, but eat the healthiest most natural whole foods that you can afford; avoid sugar, corn, additives and chemicals, and you will feel better and look better, too. ***

Are You Allowing Goals To Happen? Think back to the freedom we had as children to achieve without hesitation and without considering potential risks. From the time we are born, we are achieving and making phenomenal strides — almost moment by moment during those first years of life. So why should that stop as we get older? The valuable lesson that each one of us can take from our childhood, no matter what era or socioeconomic status we were born into, is that achievement is a very natural and personally gratifying experience. We are quite literally born to achieve, each and every one of us, but we are born to achieve for ourselves, not for others. When we first are slapped into this world and let out our first cry, we have achieved life and are on a wonderful track of accelerated achievement for the next few short years: learning to grasp, walk, talk, read, write … and the list goes on. The key to our achievement at this very young and wonder-filled age is in the learning. We eat, sleep and breathe the process of learning on a 24/7 basis. It comes naturally and effortlessly. We are little sponges absorbing and processing everything around us and it is completely natural, not overwhelming. We naturally live by the three promises my grandmother taught me. We find a way or make a way. We don’t feel guilty about making life easier for ourselves. We keep our mind open to all possible resources and support. It is only when we begin to communicate that all sorts of limitations suddenly become part of our mindset. And where do these limitations come from? Well, not from us, but from others. As we grow older, others start to point out, from their perspective or experience, why something cannot or should not be done. Expectations by others also result in goals coming into our spheres that are not ours, but theirs. Another aspect of our lives that begins to shape the way we approach goals is, quite frankly, when we get into a more structured learning environment. Even though we are learning, we are also being made aware of what can and cannot be done. Rules become a part of our existence, and with these rules, a mindset of limitation develops. Now this is not to say that rules are not important, because when it comes to safety and organization in group settings, they certainly have their place. The key is to take rules in the context of what they are doing as a whole versus what they are doing to you. There is something to be said for the idea that rules are meant

to be broken. The key is to begin to understand your comfort level with going beyond or outside the rules and to understand when these comfort zones began to take shape. How did you react to rules and other’s perceptions as a child? Did you willingly accept them and no longer attempt something you may have otherwise tried? Did you question why? Did you rebel and do forbidden things anyway? Did you try to achieve in another way to get around the rules? How you approach your goals today were shaped during this formative time. But it does not mean you cannot reshape them. That is the beauty of being your own person. We do have the ability to change the way we think. Your life is what your thoughts make it. What I hope manifests for you in reading this is a renewed sense of hope that you can make great strides, just like you did when you didn’t know any better. The old adage, “I think I can, therefore I can” is something to embrace with all the passion you have inside. It all comes down to knowing what you truly desire and allowing all the pieces in your life to synergize to make it happen. It also comes down to figuring out the difference between what is perceived to be an obstacle or a deterrent, and what really is one. Many of us watch a TV show called “Project Runway” where we learn terms such as “fierce”, “fashionista” and “make it work”. This show may seem trivial; but to those of us in the fashion industry, there are many great things we learn from each episode. Here are nine things I have gleaned from all those seasons of watching my favorite show: • DESIGN PRINCIPLES -Home Fashion uses the same design principles as the clothing fashion industry. A product or room that is well designed uses concepts such as scale, complementary color palettes, unity, and function. A well designed room from 1960, even though it might be out of style today; will still have a cohesive, well put-together look in 2011. Fashions that Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy wore years ago are still loved today. A poorly designed room in 2011 will not please the eye today, and will possibly be the topic of poor taste jokes on late night talk shows in the year 2049. • VISION- Both clothing and interior designers have the ability to visualize things in their head, put them on paper, and produce the finished version of their creation. The fashion industry has quicker turn-around time because most people buy at least one new clothing item every year. Most shoppers do not have the money to redecorate their rooms every year; but possibly change several things in their closet each season. • HOME FASHION FOLLOWS CLOTHING TRENDSUsually about a year or two after a trend is on the runway; it starts showing up in homes. For example, who would have thought that grey would be a popular wall color? It is still a huge color in dress shops and in a room mixes well with other colors such as plum, lemon, and red. Remember the Safari trend from years ago? It started with the animal prints and wrap around dresses then leapt onto walls, drapery, and pillows all over the world. • COLOR MIXTURES-Did you know that you can examine your wardrobe for your favorite clothing combinations and use those as clues for decorating your home? Most people instinctively know the colors that they look and feel great in. Consider making your home an extension of your wardrobe. You don’t have to paint every wall red if that is your favorite color; but you might consider using it in pillows and artwork. • TEXTURE- The best fashions on “Project Runway” feature combinations of several textures. Some designers have woven fabrics, tie-dyed silk, used feathers, mixed leather with a wool hound’s tooth, and hand sewn beads to chiffon. In our homes, the best rooms use sisal, made of natural grass, or a faux sisal that mimics the real thing. Leather can be lovely in a family room but should be mixed with a tapestry or wool plaid in order to keep the room from being too slick and sterile. • LINES- Just as hemlines and necktie widths change in the fashion

industry; lines change in home fashions. Remember the huge lamp shades from the 1960’s? They are back today! The current lines in both contemporary and traditional homes are cleaner than they were ten years ago. • THEMES- Both clothing and homes have themes that cycle through at different times. Some of these tend to come from movies and the lifestyles that they offer. Remember “Under the Tuscan Sun”? Everyone seemed to want a Tuscan style home after that movie. Carving, old world paint and furniture finishes, olive topiaries, and jars with peppers showed up even in the most modest homes. “Eat, Pray, Love” has inspired more zen-like environments that are less cluttered. • PERSONAL STYLE- Your personal style should come outwhether it is your dress or your home. All the trends in furniture and clothing are designed to make money. It is not necessary to buy every trendy item or embrace every new look. Find the things that reflect your personal style and select items that will make you happiest the longest. • KEEPING CURRENT- Even though you do not have to redecorate your home every year; it does help both financially and mentally to keep fairly current with trends. You often save money and headaches if you tackle a few projects each year to improve your surroundings. This might include a simple thing like painting a popular color on an accent wall or buying some pillows. However, it also might mean that you should endure something painful such as redecorating your kitchen if it doesn’t function well, has chipped lead-based paint, or appliances that are energy hogs. You never know what life might throw at you that will change your current housing situation. It is sad to see people redo a home right before selling it and not get to enjoy the new carpet, gas stove, or granite countertop. Next time you thumb through a style magazine or watch a fashion reality show on TV; watch for ideas and clues to make your surroundings “fierce”. As an 18 year old, there are two things I find to be fairly high on my priority list. Some of you may think these are trivial or faddish, but I guarantee that you use both on a daily basis, and they may have more importance to you than you realize. What two things could I possibly be referring to? Technology and communication of course! Yes, I said it! I bet most of you automatically think of cell phones or personal handheld devices such as a BlackBerry. I bet you are thinking, “She is a cell phone junkie, always talking and texting.” This may be true to some degree, but there is another piece of technology that I value even more than my BlackBerry. Skype! For those of you who are not familiar with Skype, let me explain. Skype is a free program, meaning it costs you $0, which you can download to your laptop or iPad. It allows you to use a webcam to video chat with someone as well as instant message them. You are probably thinking back to all the news media headlines saying how dangerous webcams are. With Skype, you get to choose who you add to your list of contacts. This way you are safe and in control of whom actually has access to your Skype profile. In the earlier part of 2010, a total of 95 billion minutes worth of voice and video calls took place, and video calls made up 40% of the use of Skype that same year (Madrigal 2010). So you are wondering where is the catch, right? Believe it or not, there isn’t a catch. What is so great about video chatting? I mean I can just talk on the phone and then get in my car and drive to see whoever I was just talking to, right?

Wrong! During the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, part of my family was in Kuwait. My aunt and uncle, who I am very close to, went to visit their daughter and son-in-law who are teachers in Kuwait and had just had a baby boy. I was devastated when I learned they would not be celebrating the holidays with us. However, with the use of Skype, we were able to video chat face to face in real time. Although, there is an eight hour time difference, so they did have to get up a bit early. Even though they were half way around the world from us, it felt as if they were right there in the kitchen laughing and having a great time. My other aunt had never heard of this program before and she was absolutely astonished at the possibilities presented by this piece of technology. I am definitely one of those people who talks with their hands and gives a great deal of details. Text messages and emails are great and very convenient, but I find that a lot of detail and expression gets lost in translation. There is much to be said for inflection and facial expressions. As a college student at Lenoir-Rhyne University, I stay super busy, making it difficult to communicate with my family. I try to talk to them at least once every day or two, but going home often is nearly impossible. With Skype, I have the ability to talk to my younger sister or other loved ones. I feel like I am on a much more personal level with them when we are able to chat on Skype versus a quick email. I am able to grasp a more complete understanding of what is going on in their everyday lives. What about you? Do you have a daughter in college, a sister or brother in another state, or a loved one in a completely different country? I am sure there is someone you haven’t seen in maybe a few months or even years that you would love to catch up with. You could even have coffee while skyping with them just as though you were in the actual coffee shop sitting across from one another. On a much larger scale, Skype is a great way for families to communicate with other family members who serve in our armed forces. Being gone for a year at a time, our troops miss out on a lot of important events and rights of passages. Imagine being a dad and not being able to see your young son take his first steps or learn to say his first words, or being a young son and not see your father for a year. Skype is a great way to help reduce and limit emotional issues families face while separated. Own a business? I am sure many of you do or maybe you are looking to start a business. Well, Skype is actually offered in 27 different languages and is used by almost every country around the world (“Skype” 2010). Business is now unlimited! Use Skype and get your company’s name out there. You could easily use Skype as a tool to expand the size of your business. There is nothing like being able to go global. Many large corporations go to work daily and use Skype to do their normal, everyday business tasks. Skype is also pure fun! It’s thrilling to be able to chat with friends who are not only in another room but on the other side of the world. I strongly suggest that you download Skype and take a few minutes to video chat with loved ones, catch up with old friends and rekindle friendships, and hopefully create new ones!
