Our november Winners

from the

How excited are you about a new year? I can tell you that I have high expectations. You would not expect any less from me would you? That is just incredible! Did you notice that the last sentence started and ended with the same two words? It was not planned and now it has totally changed my direction for this column. How often do we set out on a course and something happens that takes us in an entirely different direction? Some might say that it is coincidence or the luck of the draw but I like to think of it as God nudging! If we just let ourselves be still long enough, we can hear the still, quiet voice of God. Two little words...”would you” or “you would”. The same two words yet depending on the order of where you place them, make all the difference in the world in the meaning. Well, I would expect things to be great in 2011. I am a “glass half-full” type of girl. Attitude makes a lot of difference in many areas of life. We might not be able to change a lot of things that life throws at us but we choose the attitude in which we live life. Carlos Castaneda said “The trick is in what one emphasizes. We either make ourselves miserable, or we make ourselves happy. The amount of work is the same.” I love that! Now if you think by reading this that my attitude is always upbeat, well, let me just set you straight on that. I occasionally get up on the wrong side of the bed just like everyone else. But I choose if I am going to be that way all day and be miserable or if I am going to give myself an attitude adjustment and live each day listening for the “God Nudges”. Oh yes, I fail very often but like I was telling a new friend of mine just today, choices belong to me. If only I could have learned this when I was young! There were times that I set out in one direction and I had some “God Nudgings” but I was on a course. I knew where I was supposed to be according to my plans and did not have time for “God Nudgings”. If I had only listened! He was directing my paths to His will but “I” had a plan. More times than not, I have to confess, I did not consult Him. Usually, I was just telling Him what I was going to do. Do you do that? God tells us In Jeremiah that He knows the plans He has for us, plans for good and not for evil, to give us a future and a hope. Most of the time, I am just too impatient to wait and see what He has in store. I just go barreling through life thinking He is just going to bless me with all good things. It can really hurt when we run head on into that wall at full speed. I don’t know why I wrote this article. Maybe God wanted someone reading this to really hear it.....or, maybe He wanted ME to hear it! I am listening Lord.

It’s not enough that I have to deal with the voices in my own head, but it seems that I am now privy to other voices as well. Namingly, Savannah’s. I was always afraid of her having imaginary friends that she brought to the table for supper or fought with in public venues, but seemed to have escaped that particular malady - until I realized that Savannah wasn’t dabbling in invisible friends because she was too busy talking to the one person who interested her the most: herself. In the car, in her bed when she was supposed to be sleeping, in restaurants while we are sitting mere inches from her... there is no place where she doesn’t seem to prefer her company to our own. Not that I’m complaining, because we’ve had some interesting peeks into her mind. Here, let me show you: Thoughts on Taco Bell’s decor: “Who painted those walls? Oh gross, why would they use that color? And look at these tables! They’re so ugly!” Thoughts on her sister’s screaming at night in outright refusal to sleep: “I’m giving her ten more minutes...ten more, and then I’m gonna...” (Note: I have no idea what she was going to do... the rest of that sentence was muffled) Thoughts on her own behavior: “I’ve got to pull myself together... I’m going to get in trouble if I don’t get my attitude together.” Thoughts on sharing: “I am not sharing this sucker with Addison. Not. Happening.” Thoughts on the drive home from school: “Jason got a yellow dot on his calendar today. Ohhhh he is going to be in so much trouble!” Then there are the times when she’s laying in bed, supposed to be going to sleep and I hear her chattering away like she’s hosting a dinner party. I’m not sure I even want to know what’s going on in there. While most of the time her little habit of talking to herself has been a source of immense entertainment, it’s been a bit worrisome, too. I mean, what if she talks to herself at school instead of making friends? Or, what if this is a habit that follows her into adulthood? Imagine what it would be like if she had to go for a job interview and voiced out loud how awful she thought her interviewer’s fashion sense was! But, I can’t say it’s been all bad. There have been some times when she’s told on herself without really intending to, and those times have been useful. Like when she told herself that if Addison touched her doll again she was going to smack her in the face. Or when she planned on going outside while I got a shower to jump into her plastic pool that was full of nasty rainwater from the day before. Still, this is probably a habit we need to nip in the bud. Well, when we can stop laughing, that is.

Happy New Year! I hope all of you are enjoying the New Year and all it has to offer. January can be a very

cold month, which is a great time to cuddle up on the couch with a sweet little cupcake. At least that’s what I do! These white chocolate cupcakes with white chocolate frosting remind me of snow; perfect for January! Sprinkle coconut or clear sprinkles on top to make them really look like snow.

Ingredients

Cupcakes: 1 ½ cups all purpose flour 1 tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. salt ½ cup softened butter ¾ cup sugar 2 eggs 4 ounces white chocolate, chopped 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1 cup milk Frosting: 4 ounces softened cream cheese ¼ cup softened butter 1 ounce melted white chocolate 1 tsp. vanilla extract 2 tsp. milk 2 ½ cups powdered (confectioners) sugar

Directions

Preheat your oven to 325 degrees. Line cupcake pans with paper liners. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside. In a small (microwave safe) bowl, melt the chopped white chocolate by heating it in the microwave for 30 second intervals. Stir between each interval. Heat until the chocolate is smooth when stirred. In a large bowl, mix together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs. Stir in melted white chocolate and vanilla extract. Add dry ingredients and milk slowly and mix until smooth. Divide batter evenly among paper liners. Bake for about 22 minutes (until toothpick is inserted and comes out clean). While the cupcakes are baking, make the frosting. Beat cream cheese, butter, and melted white chocolate in a mixing bowl until smooth. Add in the vanilla extract and milk. Gradually beat in powdered sugar until it is all incorporated and smooth. Transfer cupcakes to a cooling rack once baked; let cool completely before icing.

A New Year’s Resolution for Your Business:

Get Fit in 2011 By: Casey M. Winebarger, Esq.

By the time you read this article, it will officially be 2011 and most of you will have made your New Year’s resolutions. For many, they will include losing weight, getting in shape, or becoming more healthy. What about your New Year’s resolutions for your business? While you may want to increase sales or hire new employees, you might also consider resolving to get your company in shape and keep it healthy. Just as you would begin your personal journey to health by examining your lifestyle and goals to determine the right diet, the first step to getting your business in shape is to review your business structure. The type of entity you operate will determine your next steps going forward. If you are operating as a sole proprietorship or a general partnership, think about whether you should become a limited liability company, a corporation, or other registered entity. Each of these structures offers limited liability to their owners, meaning that the owners cannot be held personally liable for the company’s debts. Conversely, owners of sole proprietorships and general partnerships have unlimited personal liability. Step two is to make a “get fit” plan - a solid foundation on which your company will operate in the years to come. You can do this by adopting a set of corporate bylaws, an LLC operating agreement, or a partnership agreement to spell out the rules and procedures by which your company will operate. Such a document should address, among other things, the methods by which owners can join and leave the company, how decisions will be made, and how profits and losses will be shared. If you already have such an agreement, now is the perfect time to review and revise it if it no longer suits the needs of your company. The third and final step is to put your plan into action. You should ensure that your company is actually following the rules of your bylaws or operating agreement and that this is documented in the appropriate company consents. Consents are written resolutions by which a company’s owners approve major business decisions, such as financing arrangements and contracts, and elect officers, directors, and managers. At a minimum, company consents should be prepared anually to ratify and approve the prior year’s operations. For best organization, the bylaws or operating agreement and company consents should be kept together in a binder, along with business and employment contracts, stock certificates, and tax documents. Making and following the above plan will help you to distinguish your personal affairs from your business affairs so that you maintain the liability protections offered by the LLC or corporate business structures. Otherwise, if you comingle your business and personal matters or do not have an operating plan that your business follows, you may invalidate your company’s contracts and actions (or they may be void from the start), increase your risk of involvement in litigation, and are vulnerable to creditors being able to reach your personal assets in satisfaction of company debts. With a healthy and strong legal footing in 2011, your business will be ready to grow and achieve its New Year’s resolutions for many years to come. REACHING YOUR FULL POTENTIAL: Pursue Your Vision With Tenacity!

“Desire plus passion equals POWER!” Jentezen Franklin Just last night, I felt like giving up. With my ‘check engine’ light glowing on my car and another major home maintenance item in the shop, the ever-growing stack of bills seemed incompatible with the life I am trying to HOLD ONTO – this life of directing a non-profit with no paycheck to count on and no supervisor to help me gage my performance. “Am I having an impact and is it worth the sacrifices I make daily?” are the questions that chase after me as I run to pursue this dream. My dream is to break free from my eight-to-five career and be available to follow that quiet inner voice which prompts me on what to do with my days. I now live to follow my heart straight into the unknown where people in need of direction and hope can collide with my passion to see them tap into all they were created to be. What is your dream? I woke up with a new resolve to PURSUE MY VISION with tenacity. What turned me around? Well, this time it was the power of a listening friend who patiently heard me out and then reflected back what I already knew to be true. Perhaps as you head into your new year, you could benefit from the same powerful reminders, so here are a few tips to guide you as you navigate life with a renewed sense of passion… Begin by asking yourself what you DESIRE for the coming year. Then ask yourself what it would be worth to pursue that dream. Now take time to write down your dream. This helps turn a far-reaching daydream into a LIFE VISION that you can begin to envision taking shape. If you have never taken time to create a LIFE VISION or MISSION STATEMENT, and you don’t know where to begin, email me for a FREE resource that will walk you through this critical process. (kimfletchercoach@aol.com). Count the costs… what obstacles are in your way? What sacrifices would be required? What would be needed in order for this to become reality (would it require extending your education, changing jobs, letting go of a toxic relationship that is pulling you off course?)? Now, look to the positive side… what resources, skills, contacts do you already possess that you could utilize to reach this dream? Before you get too hard on yourself at this point, feeling you ‘don’t have what it takes to succeed’ (I struggle with this one too!), remind yourself that PASSION is more powerful than talent. If you are truly passionate about reaching a vision, you possess a greater power than the person with all the skill and resources

who lacks that burning desire to make something happen. I believe all passion and vision worth possessing actually come from God. Now, before you write me off… think with your heart for a moment. We are created in His image and He tells us that without vision, we perish. Believing that we were created to live abundant, passionate lives… I can only conclude that such a life is only possible if it is a life of vision. And not just any vision, but the vision God has instilled in my heart. The vision God transfers to your heart will come to pass, but it will follow His model of death, burial and resurrection. Maybe you had a dream or vision that you feel is lost? I know for myself over the past decade as I have broken free to the life of a dreamer who longs to make every day count, I have had to kill and bury my own vision in order for it to be resurrected by God as His Vision for me. He continually re-calibrates my ‘Life Compass’ to line my desires up with His heart. If you feel your vision is dead, maybe it is time to call it to life. If you feel the dream you had is no longer worth pursuing, perhaps that one needs to be buried once and for all while you ask God to awaken His best vision in you. You will know when you have laid hold of your true life vision… it won’t let you rest until you chase after it. As you awaken to your greatest dreams and visions for the coming year and write them down, resist all temptations that would steer you off course. And if your vision seems slow in coming to pass, be patient. Success is not found in quick results, but in FINISHING WELL. You have been created to accomplish the extraordinary! Hold that reality in your heart and ask God to ignite His Compass deep within your spirit to keep you perfectly aligned with all you were created to become. Never let go of God and never let go of the vision He has given you… IT WILL COME TO PASS!

Know What They Are Thinking

By Nicole Greer, PPCC Founder and Principle Coach at Vibrant Coaching

Think about it…

Sophisticated women must think about their thoughts. Examination of the basic concepts at work in our lives allows us to create a fertile foundation for growth. As we begin the New Year with its customary resolutions, the pressure is on to make changes…big changes. And big changes start with a good look at what we think about. Our thought life frames the future and determines behavior. Stagnant old ways of thinking must be challenged. Do our thoughts serve a prosperous healthy future? Let’s start with the understanding that we are living organisms. The textbook definition states that signs of life characterize a living organism. Living Organisms are: Highly organized structures with the capacity to use energy. Are equipped to respond to stimuli. Are suited to their environment. Finally, they grow. Is that you? ...a highly organized structure with the capacity to use energy, equipped to respond to stimuli in order to grow within a well-suited environment This definition suggests we think about: Becoming Highly Organized • Create a master schedule for your day, your week and your month. Include activities that energize including exercise, reflection time, and a space for sharing with a mentor, coach, or an accountability partner. • Clear the clutter from your life. The New Year is the perfect time to say no to the projects, partnerships, and programs that no longer give you energy or support your personal growth. • Collect important documents, file, sort, and take command of the information that you need to navigate through life with ease. No more lost energy searching, panicking and being frustrated by not knowing where things are. Responding to Stimuli • What are you watching? The quality of the information that we take in is directly related to quality of our thought life. For example, if you want to lose weight, you must immerse yourself in healthy thoughts. Turn off the Food Network and tune into the Biggest Loser. • What are you listening to? Turn on the dance music and start moving. • What are you reading? Dust off one of the diet books on your library shelf. Cancel the subscription to your foodie magazine and get one that inspires you to hike, run, or do yoga. Being Well Suited to Our Environment • Consider your career. Does your work environment utilize your talents? Are you challenged? Bored? Now is the time to update your resume. Ask for more responsibility. Innovate your role. In this economy, people are being hired and promoted for excellence. Employers need individuals who prove that they are thinking growth. • Who do you spend time with? Surround yourself with like-minded people in pursuit of change. Their actions are just the catalyst you need to

be your best. • Establish boundaries that protect you from sliding into negative thoughts. Stop the gossip, decide to let things go and leave the past in the past. We Grow • Since the definition states that each of us is a highly organized complex structure, isn’t it possible that we were created or molded together for a highly organized complex purpose? Inside each of us is a seed of potential waiting for fertile soil. Fertilize your future with positive thoughts that lead to positive actions, and allow you to flourish in 2011. With each positive input, you’ll create an environment that will release your hidden potential and cause you to bloom into your purpose.

Examination of the basic concepts at work in our lives allows us to create a fertile foundation for growth.

New Beginnings by Rebecca Gardner

The beginning of a new year always seems to start slow, and by the end of the year, it feels like a whirlwind. For me, the past year was a whirlwind of excitement! Looking back on the year, I realized there were several baby steps along the way that got me to where I am now. I got accepted to graduate school in August 2009 and completed my Master of Business Administration in August 2010 from Appalachian State University. I received my first “big girl” job offer on Sept. 8, 2010, and accepted it right away. On September 25, I packed up my belongings, put gas in my car, and drove to Hickory, North Carolina. Later that day, my parents drove up with my mattress and box spring on the top of their mini van. It was definitely a site to see! Why Hickory? Well, let me begin by saying I never thought I would wind up in Hickory. I always thought of myself as moving to a big city (other than Raleigh). But, other plans were in store for me. My boyfriend’s family is originally from here, so I have a close “extended” family, and it is still only three hours to get home in case of emergencies. I also accepted a great job that I can use both of my degrees, in the exact field I want to be in. I never realized how many address changes there are to making a big move. I changed my address for the post office, credit/debit cards, my driver’s license, car registration and insurance, and health insurance. I bought renter’s insurance for the first time, changed my address for utilities and services for my apartment, the bank, income tax, and new physicians. Two weeks after I was “settled,” I went to the Catawba Valley Humane Society and found my new roommate---Sally! Then, I found a vet. A dog is exciting, but that’s another story in itself! The main obstacles I have faced so far include finding my way around town with Hickory’s crazy roads and my lack of directional skills, and starting over, in general. I have found that I go through a lot of toilet paper and paper towels. I have learned to have an “emergency fund” for the night that I lock my keys in my car on a Sunday evening (yes, this happened too), and that it is very hard to meet people in a new town. Since I came in October, several organizations were wrapping up their year, so they were not meeting until this new year. So, what happens now? If you are moving, or about to move, I would advise the following: • • • •

Buy a GPS (No, it doesn’t work really well in Hickory, NC, but for those who are directionally-challenged, like myself, it does wonders!) It costs money to change your address, but most of the time you can change it online. Always have an emergency fund. Whether you lock your keys in your car on a Sunday night, or have to take your pet to the vet on short notice, it is important to have this fund. Remember to think about the people who have helped you along the way.

My resolution for this new year is to get involved and start becoming an active member of my new community. What’s yours? Happy New Year!

THE

MALE BOX by Wayne DeLoriea

The 2nd World War was a conflict that involved most of the world’s powers from 1939 through 1945. Why is that significant to us today? Well from 1946 through the 1950’s the US enjoyed relative peace and prosperity and a phenomenon known as the baby boom occurred. So what does all of that have to do with us in 2011? Well, the first baby boomers were born in 1946. That means that the first wave of that population turns 65 years old this month. We have been hearing about health care and failing retirement funds every week for the past 2 or 3 years now. If we baby boomers don’t start taking our health more seriously by eating better and exercising, we could bring on a catastrophe to our beloved country. It is our mission, our duty, to take this seriously. For years, we’ve made New Year’s resolutions to get in better shape and lose a few pounds, to look good at the beach…but realistically, that hasn’t worked so well. Kathleen Doheny, wrote for Health Day and published in US News and World Report, in November 2010, that in the next 20 years obesity rates in the US will climb to an astounding 42%. In a time when there are more gyms and spas than at any other time in history, more exercise shows, workout routines, weight loss gimmicks, videos and a government that mandates nutritional information in many industries…we just keep getting fatter. Let me try to help: I have to think that we keep getting fatter because we just like to instantly gratify ourselves and self medicate with sugar and simple carbs. When life gets hard and disappointments hurt our feelings, we feel the need to bury ourselves in sugar. It doesn’t help that the food industry hides fats in the form of sugar. You see sugar is fat free. That’s right, fat free! Do you REALLY believe that you can eat lots of sugar without getting fat though? Common sense tells us that can’t be correct and it’s not. Let me simplify years of studies and research for everyone. Sugar in food IS fat free, but as soon as it hits your tongue and the back of your mouth it begins a process that turns it into fat. As it hits your stomach and small intestine, it quickly gets through the lining into the blood. Now, our brains are constantly monitoring our bloodstreams and striving for balance. As sugar begins to overwhelm the system, insulin is pumped into the blood where it captures the sugar and speeds it directly into fat cells. Sugar has addiction-like properties.

So what do we do? Do we just sit back and let ourselves go? Do we let business and laziness kill us? Do we allow our generation to crush our country financially and deprive our children of health care, Social Security, and Medicare? Well, if we keep plodding along with blinders on…we are likely to do just that. What SHOULD we do? Well, it just seems to me that we are being assaulted by the sugar and food industries. Business has declared war on us…it just neglected to tell us. So, let’s fight back. I’m the last one to say that we should never eat doughnuts or cookies. I believe that God covered our tongues with taste buds for a reason. He wants us to be blessed by and give thanks for wonderful tasting foods… but Apples and Oranges taste good too. Why does it ALWAYS have to be a cookie or a cupcake? On weekends I deliver meals for a business right here in the Hickory

area. I bring freshly prepared, healthy meals to folks who care about getting and staying healthy. I also eat those same meals. Eating the right foods allows me to cheat once in a while. I explain all of this in my book, Coach Without A Whistle. (Barnes and Noble or Amazon.com) For heaven’s sake, have the sweet treats on your grocery list, but let’s understand that we also have to do some exercise. I don’t care if I eat 3000 calories, just as long as I burn off 1500 of them. Throw in a CD with some Techno or Disco music and dance. Grab your wife, husband, kids, your best friend or your family pet and dance for 20 minutes. Do this regularly … perhaps 3 times a week or more. Even though I own The CORE Fitness Studio and a warehouse full of gym equipment, I DON’T simply recommend buying memberships for exercise and I hope you respect me for that. If exercise is all you want, then a gym membership might not be for you. If finding a social network and having good, healthy fun is what you’re looking for, then by all means join a gym…hire a good trainer for the first month and then work in with other gym members that are talking about the same issues that you find interesting. People, I know you’re likely reading this while you wait for your orders in some restaurant. That’s okay…eat and enjoy, but tomorrow can be the start of a healthier, happier you. If we all take this seriously, it will be the start of a healthier and happier country; a country that our parents and grandparents fought for and many died to protect. It’s our war now…and we need to be as diligent for our kids and grandkids as those who came before us. I’m reading a new book, written by a friend, Terry Sigmon from right here in Hickory, NC. The title is What Did You Expect. Since THIS article is written by a coach…what DID you expect? Eat well and Be active. With Love, Happy New Year and Many More… Coach

Eating Crow by Sharon Jaynes

Today’s Truth

“Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life--in order that I may boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor for nothing” (Philippians 2:14-16 NIV).

Friend to Friend

Sometimes we like what life serves up to us, and sometimes we don’t, but most of the time it simply depends on the attitude of the person holding the spoon. Such was the case one evening when I went out to dinner with friends to the Sanitary Fish Market. I know that is a strange name for a seafood restaurant, but it was a great place that everyone frequented in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina. Since the food was good, I guess it was a nice plus to know that it was sanitary as well. One evening, when I was eighteen-years-old, I went out to dinner with three friends. Three of us were Christians and the fourth was not. Larry was very macho and preferred the, “I’m in control of my destiny” approach to life. But we loved him anyway. The three of us Christians usually took a moment to ask a blessing before we had a meal, but we had not eaten in a restaurant with Larry before. He was surprised and embarrassed when we bowed our heads to pray. Larry held his head high and proud as if to say, “I might be at the same table with these people, but I’m not one of them.” All four of us ordered clam chowder as an appetizer. We had the same waitress and same chowder, from the same pot. We three “holy rollers” (we acquired this name because of a 10-second prayer) dipped our spoons into our bowls and tasted chowder full of tender clams and steamy potatoes. Then proud Larry dipped in his spoon to retrieve only broth. “Why is your chowder full of clams and potatoes,” he demanded, “and all I’ve got is broth?” Larry was about to call the waitress over and complain when I

looked up and said, “Well, maybe it’s because we asked God to bless ours and you didn’t.” Larry didn’t complain to the fine people at the Sanitary, but ate “crow” instead. It is amazing how God takes a grateful heart and fills it even more! Feeling empty today? Stop and praise God for His goodness. Feeling lonely today? Stop and thank God for His presence. Feeling anxious today? Stop and thank God for His provision.

Let’s Pray

Dear Lord, so many times I am quick to complain when I haven’t even asked You to bless my day. Help me to have an attitude of gratitude and become a woman who talks to You regularly, thanks You consistently, and praises You throughout the day. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Now it’s Your Turn

Keep a list of all the times you complain today. Keep a list of all the times you compliment or encourage someone today. Keep a list of all the reasons you have to be thankful today.

TRUTH

& BEAUTY

by Teresa Pope, Esthetician

Question: I recently started working in an environment that is very smokey. I think that it is effecting my skin and it looks sallow and dull. Could this really be messing up my skin or is it all in my head? Also, is there anything that will remove that smokey smell from your hair and skin without showering? I don’t always have time to shower directly after work, but hate having that stinky smokey smell. Answer: It is not in your head! That environment can definitely cause dull looking skin. The nicotine from cigarettes (even from second hand smoke) can play havoc on our skin. Be sure to shower as quickly as possible after leaving work to wash it away and always wear a protective moisturizer all over to help minimize the absorption of the smoke into your skin. Use a facial and body exfoliant at least twice per week, three; if you have the time to get in an extra one. If you can’t shower directly after work, try these little tricks to help with the “sticky smokey smell”. First, wash any exposed areas of the skin with soap and water, such as your hands and forearms. For those areas that you can’t wash so quickly, such as your face and hair, use a fine mist spray bottle in which you have added the following ingredients: *fill 3/4 of bottle with distilled water *add 2 TBSP baking soda *1 drop white vinegar (optional) *2-4 drops your favorite essential oil(this is what the scent will be, so choose wisely) *fill remainder of bottle with lemon juice Mist your face and hair and clothing with the spray bottle, if you don’t have a fine mist spray bottle than use a regular spray bottle and spray the product upward and stand under the falling mist. You may also want to use a body powder such as Shower-toShower to help elimanate some of the smokey smell. However, I would NOT use perfume to try and cover up the smell, that will only make it worse. The perfume will only mix with the stinky smokey smell and the scent will be overwhelming and not so pretty.

Lights, Camera, North Carolina Action! It has been said that North Carolina is becoming the “Hollywood East” of the film industry. They are generally speaking about Wilmington, NC but in recent years, many other cities have joined the filming action. One of the largest independent films shot in NC in 2010 is Pendulum Swings, a faith based, feature length film. It was shot primarily in Morganton but also had scenes from Hickory, Statesville, Mooresville and Charlotte. Many businesses were involved in the making of the film. Participation ranged from coffee shops to the county court system. The sheriff’s department and police department were vital to several scenes in the film as well. Being the executive producer and director of the film, I had a lot of opportunity to be around the cast and crew. Most of them were from NC and spread out all across the state. The commitment level that I observed from this group of people was sometimes overwhelming. We were rained out, snowed out, fogged out, frozen out, ran out of daylight many times; and still, everyone was very eager to reschedule all for the sake of the film. Understand that these people were not doing this out of a love for their paycheck because there was no paycheck. Most of the one’s involved committed to this because of a true desire to see a local faith based film make it and make it big; and big it is. There were approximately 800 plus people in front of the camera during shooting. We had 107 setups and shot in 86 different locations. The film moves very fast and covers a lot of territory. Pendulum Swings is based on a true story. DALE JENNINGS has it good - a career he loves, a nice house, and a beautiful family. But Dale’s home is not a happy one. His marriage to MARIA is crumbling, and Dale doesn’t realize how quickly it’s slipping away until he loses it all - his home, his work, and his children, JENNA and JESSICA. Dale spirals fast, and it’s not long before he hits bottom - homeless, in debt to a vicious loan shark, and ultimately hold up, bruised and broken, on the wrong end of the law. When tragedy strikes, Dale tips over the edge in suicidal despair. But when all seems lost, Dale is offered what might be his last shot at redemption - and a chance discovery hands him an opportunity for revenge. Personally for me it has been an experience like no other in my 26 years in the video production world. I have covered a lot of major events, put together many commercials and promotions but nothing could have completely prepared me for the two year process that this movie has become. There were many times that I felt like I couldn’t keep going. I was constantly reminded that God gives us the strength to do the things that he has given us to do. This was truly a God sized project and none of the cast or crew could take individual credit for the massive accomplishment that this film is today. It has

been from the hand of God and without Him, we would still be sitting on the script. We are announcing the Theatrical Red Carpet presentation of PENDULUM SWINGS. The actors will be on site for autographs and photos. The film will be shown at the Marquee Cinemas in Morganton, NC on Saturday Jan. 8th 2011. Seating is limited for the Red carpet Event and tickets should be prepurchased online at http://shop.pvsnc.com/products/5134-pendulum-swingsticket-010611-4pm.aspx. The trailers can be seen by clicking the INFO button on the Pendulum Swings website which is www.pendulumswingsmovie.com Come out and support this faith based red carpet event! We hope to see you there! Bill Rahn Executive Producer/Director PENDULUM SWINGS

6 Tips To Help You Achieve Your New Year’s Resolutions by Sharon Rashidi

According to a New Year Resolution Experiment done in 2007 that followed 3000 people attempting to achieve a range of resolutions, including losing weight, visiting a gym, quitting smoking and drinking less, only 12 percent achieved their goal at the one year mark. The study uncovered why so many people fail, and what can be done to achieve success.

Standing Oblique Twist This exercise target the oblique’s, helping to build stability in the core muscles. Step 1: Stand with your feet shoulder width apart, holding a medicine ball in front of you with each hand at abdomen level Step 2: Keep the ball at abdomen level as you use your arms to move the ball to the right. At the same time, pivot your lower body to the left

Hints for achieving New Year’s Resolutions: 1. Make Only One Resolution – Most often people make the mistake of trying to achieve too much. The chances of success are greater when people channel their energy into changing just one aspect of their behavior. 2. Plan ahead - Plan your schedule way in advance, and go ahead & write in the times and days you will exercise. Treat these exercise sessions as any other appointment. You need to respect yourself enough to keep the appointment you made with yourself. 3. Avoid previous resolutions – Deciding to re-visit a past resolution sets you up for frustration and disappointment. Choose something new, or approach an old problem in a new way. For example, instead of trying to lose 20 pounds in weight, try exercising more and increase vegetable consumption. 4. Be specific – Think through exactly what you are going to do, where you are going to do it, and at what time. Vague plans fail. For example, instead of saying that you will go running two days of the week, tell yourself that you will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6pm. 5. Go public - Many people keep their New Year’s Resolution to themselves. Unfortunately, this makes it all too easy to simply forget about them. Instead, go public. For example, write down your resolution on a large sheet of paper, sign it, and place it somewhere prominent in your house. Tell your friends, family and colleagues about your resolution, and ask them to provide you with helpful nudges to assist you in achieving your goal. 6. Be persistent - New habits take time to learn, and once in a while you will slip up and revert to the old you. People on diets might suddenly give in to temptation, or those trying to exercise more might not find the time to go to the gym for a week. Remember that everyone messes up from time to time. Don’t blame yourself if you falter, or allow the experience to make you give up. Sharon Rashidi, the Owner of The Perfect Workout in Downtown Newton will give exercise ideas and tips throughout the coming year to help you meet your New Years Resolution Goals.

Step 3: Bring the ball back to center. Repeat for 10-20 repetitions then switch sides. Note: You can increase the level of difficulty by increasing the repetitions or the weight of the ball

Dumbell Shoulder Press This exercise is great for improving overall upper-body strength and enhancing your posture by toning the shoulders.

Step 1: Hold a dumbbell in each hand, with one on each side of your head and activate your shoulders Step 2: Slowly extend your arms up pushing the dumbbell over your head and above your shoulders

Step 3: With the same controlled motion, lower the dumbbell back to the starting position. Repeat for 1015 repetitions. Note: This exercise can be performed while standing or in a seated position. Start with a light weight and increase the weight as you become more and more comfortable with the exercise.

Nope, I am not going to take down my Christmas decorations....at least until Valentines! Just because all the presents have been opened and the paper thrown out in the trash does not mean I have to take the lights down. I keep telling my husband that as he goes through the house, dragging me along as I hold onto his shirt tails, trying to make him stop. Why, why, why, I cry, must we take them down? Then we stuff them in storage containers to not be seen again until sometime in November. I wonder what they do out there in the garage when we are not looking. Do they feel like I don’t love them anymore or that I just use them and then throw them away? Are my trees singing “Oh Christmas Trees” or is it now just a weeping willow? Are my bells jingling all the way or are they playing “For Whom the Bell Tolls”? Is my Mrs. Clause singing “Santa Baby” or is she singing “Baby, It’s Cold Outside”? I am not even going to think about what my Angels must be thinking! Now don’t you even think I might be crazy. Did you not see Toy Story? It was absolutely one of the best movies ever written! Woody should have been nominated for an Oscar, in my and my granddaughter’s opinion. I ask myself, “Self, why do I mind taking everything down so much?” Maybe it’s because the decorations constantly remind me of the reason for the season and people seem to act better during Christmas. I act better! That is sad but true. It seems as though we are more patient, well, except for that woman I was behind in the grocery store the day before Christmas. She was not very patient at all and I really felt sorry for the cashier who was trying very hard to be nice even though the woman, herself, was not. When I got out in the parking lot, that very same woman was just going to leave her cart sitting right in the next parking spot next to my car. She was still complaining, this time to herself, I guess. What went through my mind was not that nice but then I realized had no idea what she was going through. I told her I would take the cart for her as I took mine. It did not stop her from mumbling under her breath, this time, probably at me, but I felt better. We are more thoughtful. I really want my friends and family to know how much they mean to me and I think most of us are that way. We are more giving. That is why we see the things like Samaritan’s Purse, The Salvation Army, The Angel Trees and many more organizations do so well at Christmas. So why do we change back to our old ways? It is because we take down the Christmas decorations! We go about our daily lives without thinking of other people as much. We become self-absorbed and that is not a good thing. God told us to love one another like He loved us. That is really hard! That means looking over the selfish, mean things about someone and seeing someone God created and someone He told us to love. EVERYDAY! Even on very cold, blustering days in the middle of January when there are no decorations to gently remind us that Jesus came because He loved us so much. I guess I will turn loose of my husband’s shirt tail and let him put everything away. The nutcrackers might try to break free and make a run for it but I am sure they will be caught and be given a year sentence in solitude but I think they will show their faces again this next Christmas. After all, it is only 11 months, three weeks and two shopping days left till next Christmas. Do you think someone might try to have me committed if I just keep on saying Merry Christmas?

Fat, Sugar, & Salt

Sophie Woman’s Magazine Jan 2011 pg 29

Fat, sugar and salt; the triple threat found in fast food, restaurant food, packaged food, frozen food, and even some foods we prepare ourselves. Our taste buds are so accustomed to the taste and feel of this combo, that we forget what real food is supposed to taste like. So with the New Year hovering just around the corner, how about some retraining of the old taste buds? Sounds good? Great! Here are a few key points to get you started. PLAN - You know I love to start with a plan. Menu planning has been my life’s work for many years now and I cannot tell you how many emails, letters, and phone calls I get from people telling me what a difference menu planning has made in their lives. But remember, planning is only part of the key. I can plan menus all day long, but it is you who does the shopping and the cooking. You are the one feeding your family. When you plan your menus, you plan to cook and you have the opportunity to teach your children to eat real food. The act of cooking real food will benefit your children for years to come. PORTION CONTROL - Practice serving actual true portion sizes of the foods that you make. Did you know dinner plates have grown by 25% since the 1970’s? Consequentially so have our our serving sizes and our stomachs. When we first get serious with portion control, we may have a problem adjusting (there’s not enough food!), but I’ll bet you’ll be surprised on how little it actually takes to satisfy your body when you eat nutrition-packed foods. In the meantime, try using smaller plates to trick the eye and the stomach into feeling satisfied with smaller serving amounts. If you’ve developed a super-sized view of a serving size, use a measuring cup to keep track for a while until you have retrained your eye. ADD DON’T SUBTRACT - Instead of feeling like you are depriving yourself, add in healthy foods that you like and eat them before you eat the other foods. You’ll find that you eat less of the unhealthy foods and over time you will prefer eating only the healthy foods. A study was done awhile ago adding in only an apple per meal to participants’ diets. Not only did they eat less, they lost weight! So much so, a new diet was born! Who knew? REPLACE - Another good thing to do is to replace unhealthy foods with their healthy counterparts. For instance you can stop buying unhealthy fats and use healthy fats such as olive oil and coconut oil in cooking. You can purchase sea salt instead of table salt. You can replace sugar or sugar substitutes with raw, natural, organic honey, Xylitol, or Stevia, a safe, all natural sweetener.

The Dinner Diva

No one is perfect all the time, but by creating a plan and doing your best each day, you will find before long that you and your family are healthier, happier, and don’t miss the fat, sugar, or salt that used to sneak into your foods.

My Sweet, Petite, Attractive Wife is Secretly A............

Tank

Life is hard. Work is hard. Marriage is hard. Raising godly children is hard. And they all take a long time. On the other hand, giving up is quick and easy. But I have a secret to share with you to help you avoid giving up easily. The secret is a lesson that my wife teaches to everyone who gets to know her. When you see my wife, what you see is a sweet, petite, attractive, quiet, and cheerful woman. What you don’t see is that, on the inside…she’s really a tank. You know, those heavy-duty armored military machines that can take a pounding from enemies and keep rolling and conquering? That’s my wife. She’s a little tank. This is her story.

Four and a half years ago, our household budget was very, very tight. After much thought and prayer, we decided that Julie would join Thirty-One Gifts, a home-based business that sells monogrammed purses, bags, totes, and gifts. There were a lot of things that made it very, very hard for her to get started. Our previous two attempts at home-based businesses had not been nearly as fruitful as we had hoped. And my little tank is not a “typical” salesperson at all. She’d rather give away her products than be pushy in any way. In addition, she was like most people: scared to death to talk in front of people. (For years we both agreed that, if she were a Pooh character…she would be Piglet.) Then, as she got started, there was another problem: she needed to find people who would do her first shows for her. There were very few people that Pictured Here: Julie Ray Photo Courtesy of Shawn Geiser Photography

my wife was even remotely comfortable asking to host one of her first shows. Shows were scarce. It was as if she had five loaves of bread and two fish, and she was supposed to feed over five thousand people with them. But her business began moving the way a teenager learns to drive a stick shift, jerking forward, then screeching to a halt. At times, she had to be willing to make the long drive from Hickory to Salisbury or Asheville or even Johnson City, TN. And the company was growing so quickly that it struggled to keep up with demand. This was enough to make some people quit. But not Julie. Still, my little tank had not yet faced two of her most serious potential setbacks. First, after having a dear friend join under her and become very successful, my wife almost lost her. It felt like a kick in the stomach and made her want to give up several times. Second, her health started to seriously decline. She began to be seriously fatigued and couldn’t shop for more than five minutes without feeling shaky, nauseated and faint. We wished it was a pregnancy, but it wasn’t. Here’s the point. In spite of all of these obstacles (and many, many others), my little tank has become unbelievably successful in her business. Despite all of the problems, she had one thing that folks never fail to underestimate. Perseverance. She just wouldn’t quit. And because she hung in there, just a few months ago, my sweet, petite, quiet little tank promoted to the very top of Thirty-One. She is now a Senior Executive Director! She’s at the very top of the top 1 percent of the company! Not only has she been promoted five times in four and a half years, but her confidence has slowly grown so that she has spoken before large groups of women at church functions, at regional conferences with Thirty-One, and she has twice been a featured speaker at Thirty-One’s annual, national conference. She is becoming less like Piglet every day! And her paychecks! Holy cow! She’s paid off our adoption loan, car loan, and student loan. She’s enabled us to significantly increase our charitable giving, paid for badly needed house repairs and landscaping, new computers, vacations, and on and on. Remember…she only started with something like five loaves and two fishes. But because she persevered, she has “fed the five thousand” many times over. I’d like to close with a personal note to my dear bride. Julie, I am so proud of you. I’m proud of the woman you are, and the woman that you are becoming. At times, when you’re out of town, and a song comes on that makes me think of you, I am filled with so much love and joy over you that I feel like I’m just going to pop! I’ve often told you that I wish other women were able to get to know you a little bit more deeply because you have so much to offer them. And now, because of your perseverance, they are getting to know you. You are helping them start their own businesses and keep them going. They are being blessed by you. I am so thankful to be your husband. Congratulations on your success! You have reached the top for many reasons, but perhaps the chief one is this: your perseverance. It’s not rocket science. It’s not flashy or fancy. It’s just your plain old, gritty determination to not quit, even in the face of overwhelming obstacles. Thanks for showing the women of Hickory that, if they can persevere, they have the potential to be stars…like you, my sweet, petite wife…the cutest little tank in Hickory.

If you’d like to be inspired by Julie or learn more about Thirty-One Gifts, go to www. thirtyonegifts.com/julieray or email her at julies31@embarqmail.com.

National GO Month by Nancy Adams, Professional Organizer

What a wonderful thing to have January representing National Get Organized (GO) month. GO month is a great excuse to begin getting yourself organized. Ah yes, having everything where it belongs and knowing where to find it is a good feeling. Being on time, and having time to relax is a good feeling. Having systems in place to keep our busy lives in order is a good feeling. Where to start? Let’s start with a most important area called The Desk... THE desk is the engine that keeps me all together. All my life I’ve had desks of all sorts. Some with cubbies or shelves. Some small and some big. I designed and built my current desk and it suits me better than any I’ve had before. It is not the actual piece of furniture in and of itself, but how I utilize it that works for me. When it starts to become a dumping ground, it’s time to re-organize. I start by taking every thing off the desk and cleaning it. Items are sorted by category. Business card info gets put into the computer data base. Papers that have been sitting for too long are trashed. Documents are filed in their colorful folders. Projects are sorted. Resisting the temptation to put too many cute baskets and bins on top of the desk, I carefully choose what goes on top. This is the month where stores put out lots of organizing supplies. You can buy all of them and still not be organized if you’re not implementing the right systems to use with these tools. For instance, if you have a lovely desktop holder for your mail, but no method for handling it, then the system won’t work and your mail will pile up. Having a place to put the mail is

Sophie Woman’s Magazine Jan 2011 pg 31 great as long as you have a method to deal with it. Call it a system, a process, a technique, or an approach. Of course it has to be a system that’s right for you. Some of us are visual and need to have stuff in plain sight or we’ll forget about it, while others want things put away so as not to clutter their mind with what’s in front of them. Some like to use color to enhance their organizing. It’s truly unique for each person. Many people have areas that are very well organized, and other areas that are total chaos. Think of all the areas or zones in our lives in addition to the desk that can be organized: Our purses and briefcases, car, closets, and pantries. Each drawer, shelf, and cubby in our homes. This is just to mention a few. When you find that area of chaos, make a commitment to change it. Paint a picture in your mind of how you would like it to be. Schedule time to work on that zone. When you get it to where you like it, schedule a bit more time to keep up with it regularly. Organizing is not a one time sweep and you’re finished. It is something that needs regular maintenance just like your car. Once you have the right system in place, you will spend less time on maintenance in the long run. So, it’s certainly worth the time investment to develop a proper process. Enjoy the feeling of relief knowing that you have created peace of mind with an organizing system that works well. January is full of New Years Resolutions, so I encourage you to start now to become more organized, even if you only have one zone. Wishing you all a happy GO month!

Get Moving For The New Year

Sophie Woman’s Magazine Jan 2011 pg 33

by Susan Guest, ASID

Welcome to 2011! It is time to make a fresh start. It is time to work on those resolutions whether they are spiritual, mental, or physical. According to an old Chinese saying, “If you want to change your life, move 27 things in your house”. From my limited knowledge of Feng Shui, I have learned that new energy (or positive Ch’i) is created by moving most things in your home even an inch. This might be because we usually dust when we move an item that has been stagnant for a while. Whatever the reason, things do feel better in the room when changes are made. I have been amazed at the energy created when I rearrange a client’s furniture and accessories. Even things that they have had for years feel almost new when they are moved around. Sometimes a room can come to life by removing some tired items or bringing in new things. As many of us are trying to lose weight or make physical changes, we should also think about losing baggage around the home or office. Start by simply cleaning the things that you have. After that, evaluate everything in your space. Get rid of everything that is not functional, beautiful, or sentimental. Items that you are no longer in love with can possibly be taken to a consignment shop or donated to a charity or person in need who would really enjoy them. If you are on a budget, as most of us are after Christmas, find new ways to use your existing items by moving them to a different place or give them a face lift. Consider painting furniture, adding new knobs, using a different lamp shade, or placing a cozy throw on your sofa. Fresh flowers can add energy to a room and light up the entire space. Paint your walls. This is an inexpensive way to change a room quickly. An accent wall of paint, wallpaper, decals, or a mural can add drama to a boring space. New lighting can add sparkle and highlight your favorite item. Cleaning your windows will bring more light into your room. There are so many ways to bring positive Ch’i to your environment. If you don’t know where to start, hire a professional for a consultation. If you do not feel new energy after moving 21 items in your home or office, get a puppy! That will certainly change your life!

Good Photo Intentions for 2011 By Pam Starnes

Each January, I vow that I will do better storing my pictures. I diligently make plans to store them well, but to no avail. By the end of the month, I have already stored hundreds of pictures somewhere on my computer. They are not easily accessible. They are not edited. They are not organized! Ugh! This January will be different! No really, I promise! This January, I’m armed with new tools to help me stick to my resolution to be able to find my pictures quickly, have them edited and ready to be printed when I need them. How will I do this? First, I will not buy a new memory card for my camera each time I fill up the current one. Instead, I will upload the pictures onto my computer on a regular basis, once a week, or as often as necessary. About every 200 pictures is adequate. Next, I will not store pictures on my phone. Most of the people in my life cannot adequately see the image on my phone’s viewing screen. So, for their sakes, I will move these pictures to my computer for storage. Whew! I’m feeling more accomplished already! Aren’t you? The next step is to go through those saved photos and PURGE! Gasp! You heard me right. I said purge

the poorly focused, too dark, bad composition photos from your file. Nooooooo! (Yes, I can hear you!) The beauty of a digital camera is that you can take way too many pictures, and delete the ones that are not perfect. The bad thing about a digital camera is that you can take way too many pictures and NOT delete the ones that are not perfect! Really, once you’ve gotten the hang of it, it’s not so bad. You really won’t be kicked out of the photography club for purging bad pictures! Quite the contrary, you will be rewarded with beautiful pictures and fewer pictures to edit! Once you’ve purged your files, make a copy of the photos onto a disc, properly labeled and stored in a CD file. Of course, an external hard drive is a must. So, essentially, your pictures will be safely stored in three places. None of these methods of storage takes long, and none is difficult to learn. I offer free classes on these and many other aspects of photography and photo care. To see my schedule or to RSVP to attend a class, go to my web site at www.mycmsite.com/pamstarnes. Don’t wait! Life will not stand still! Pam Starnes has been helping clients in the Unifour Area keep track of their pictures for over 15 years. She has completed over 80 traditional photo albums and 20 digital albums for her family. She believes that each child should have a record of his/her life’s photos and stories.
