of unusual, ntstorrcal mustcnl lnstrumenrc. Kenneth Bloom writes "...The idea of bowing the dulcimer is a very old one, easily traceable back to the 18th century. Before the Civil War, this technique was common. There are examples of old, bowed dulcimers, called "bowed zithers," in the Mercer Museum in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, with their original bows. There were areas where the dulcimer was only played with a bow." "On the mountain dulcimer the bridge was flat, so it was only possible to bow the low or the high string. The technique was pleasant but wasn't very versatile. I knew I could build an instrument that would make better use of the bowing technique and sound much better. In a way, the bowed dulcimer is the modern viola-dagamba. It has frets but you can play notes for which you don't have frets." Kenneth Bloom plays guitar, bandura, concert zither, banjo, mandolin, domro, balalaika, fiddle, clarinet, saxophone, recorder, Irish flute and Northumbrian Pipes, with vocals. He has given concerts across North America since 1974, and has appeared on Garrison Keillor's "Prairie Home Companion" and at major folk festivals and clubs in the U.S. and Canada.

For the last twenty-six years, Kenneth has been building a wide range of instruments, most not commonly available from other sources. He has done a tremendous amount of research and has consulted with native builders and players. He participates in 18th century Living History events, providing period music on period instruments and acting as Sergeant for the Royal Highland Emigrants, 84th Foote. His recordings include "The Bowed? Dulcimer," and he can be reached at http:r'iryri'rv.borve.et_dulcirnQl'"**n: or kgil-1**r$(gl;{lyj.*"et.
