Roscrea, Co. Tipperary How is it that one match can start a forest fire, but it takes a whole box of matches to start a campfire? Christy Whitehead

Jokes A senior citizen drove his brand new Corvette convertible out of the dealership. Taking off down the road, he pushed it to 80 kph, enjoying the wind blowing through what little hair he had left. "Amazing," he thought as he flew down the road, pushing the pedal even more. Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw a Garda car, blue lights flashing and siren blaring. He floored it to 100 kph, then 110, then 120.

Suddenly he thought, "What am I doing? I'm too old for this!" and pulled over to await the Garda's arrival. Pulling in behind him, the Garda got out of his vehicle and walked up to the Corvette. He looked at his watch, then said, "Sir, my shift ends in 30 minutes. Today is Friday. If you can give me a new reason for speeding--a reason I've never before heard--I'll let you go." The old gentleman paused then said: "Three years ago, my wife ran off with a Garda. I thought you were bringing her back."

"Have a good day, Sir," replied the Garda.

On opening his new store, a man received a bouquet of flowers. He became dismayed on reading the enclosed card, that it expressed "Deepest Sympathy". While puzzling over the message, his telephone rang. It was the florist, apologizing for having sent the wrong card. "Oh, it's alright." said the storekeeper. "I'm a businessman and I understand how these things can happen." "But," added the florist, "I accidentally sent your card to a funeral party." "Well, what did it say?" ask the storekeeper. "'Congratulations on your new location'." was the reply.

Dan was a single guy living at home with his father and working in the family business. When he found out he was going to inherit a fortune when his sickly father died, he decided he needed to find a wife with whom to share his fortune. One evening, at an investment meeting, he spotted the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her natural beauty took his breath away.

"I may look like just an ordinary guy," he said to her, "but in just a few years, my father will die and I will inherit €200 million." Impressed, the woman asked for his business card and three days later, she became his stepmother. Women are so much better at financial planning than men.

The teenager lost a contact lens while playing basketball in his driveway. After a fruitless search, he told his mother the lens was nowhere to be found. Undaunted, she went outside and in a few minutes, returned with the lens in her hand. "How did you manage to find it, Mom?" the teenager asked. "We weren't looking for the same thing," she replied. "You were looking for a small piece of plastic. I was looking for €150."

In the middle of an argument a man said to his wife, "I don't know how you can be so stupid and so beautiful all at the same time!" The wife responded calmly, "Allow me to explain...the good Lord made me beautiful so you would be attracted to me; and he made me stupid so I would be attracted to you!"

- Redwood Castle, Lorrha, Co. Tipperary The Midlands have a wealth of Tourist attractions that are all too often forgotten about by those of us who live here. We hope to bring you suggestions for places to visit on a regular basis. During the twelfth and thirteenth century, the Anglo-Normans were very keen to take over the west of Ireland but to do this they had to cross the Shannon river. Despite several attempts, not one was successful and as a result they were never able to settle in the west. The Anglo Normans were also in danger of being attacked from across the Shannon and so they built a long line of castles and towerhouses along the eastern bank. An Anglo-Norman family named De Cougan, constructed Redwood Castle around 1210. It was originally two stories tall with the entrance on the second floor, accessible by a retractable ladder. This was a security measure widely used in those days. In 1350, the castle was granted to the O'Kennedy family after it was vacated by the De Cougans. The O'Kennedy's added more floors to the Castle. The castle was then turned over to their chief bardic family, the Mac Egans. Bardic families had many responsiblities, including those of advisors, administrators, lawyers, musicians, poets, physicians and ambassadors. The Mac Egans of Redwood, however, specialised in one subject, the ancient Irish Brehon Law and since they served several lords

and chieftains, and very few other people practised and studied Brehon Law, they vitually had the monopoly. They founded a school of history and law at Redwood which attracted some of the foremost thinkers in the country, including Michael O'Cleary, who with a team of historians, compiled the famous Annals of the Four Masters, which recorded Irish history up to the early seventeenth century. During the Cromwellian invasion of Ireland, the castle was taken over by Cromwell's troops who burnt it down, leaving only the 11 foot stone walls and the spiral staircase standing. For the next three hundred years it remained a ruin until a farmer in the early 1900's cut a doorway through the stone walls on the ground level to house a horse. In 1972, Michael Egan, a lawyer from Castlebar, Co. Mayo, bought it, and out of his own pockets, restored the castle to its former glory. Redwood Castle is open to the public until Sunday 29th August. There are guided tours around the Castle and being one of the main historical attractions of the Midlands, it is well worth the visit.

When Panic Attacks....Attack! By Tammy Spain You are out shopping minding your own business or dining with friends and suddenly for no reason your head starts to spin, the sweat starts to pour from most parts of your body and you have pains in your chest. Your having a heart attack. Somehow you manage to get to the emergency room only to be told you were in fact having a panic attack. You wonder what caused such a terrible thing and will you have anymore? According to the National Phobic's Society one in three people will suffer a panic attack at some point in their lives. They come out of the blue and anyone can have one.

maybe our first attack, we can't think why we are having these feelings now. But if you were to really think about the situation, you will know why. Fear of not passing our exams, thinking of our future and what it has in store for us. Letting those we love down. All these thoughts whirl round and around in our head and in seconds we start to panic. Some of us handle the situation, others don't do so well. So where do you go from here? Most people go to their Doctor who will monitor the frequency of these attacks. Some Doctors will prescribe medication but getting to the root of the attacks usually work for the better that's where a Therapist can help.

Panic attacks are usually triggered by a stressful event. A Bereavement, financial worries, overworking, moving house and divorce can all raise our anxiety levels to the point where our bodies become over sensitive. They can occur when we become concerned for our own health. Although terrifying none of these thoughts and feelings ever comes to anything. There is no evidence that anyone has ever died from a panic attack, and no one has ever gone crazy. Most attacks last for between 5 and twenty minutes, although they can be as brief as a few seconds.

Therapists will help you realise the impact that your thoughts have on your body and help you realise that you are in control of your body. You will be shown how to breath properly, how to talk to yourself and think positive by re-programming the brain (and no you don't need an operation) When we talk to ourselves it's immediate and the more we use the same words over and over, the more our brain starts to believe what we are saying. So by saying on a regular basis 'Everyday I am getting better' what we are doing is Reinforcing our brain to believe this.

The sensations you have are all because you have suddenly had a large amount of adrenalin released into your system. Adrenalin is a way of preparing your body to protect yourself.

So if we feel an attack happening and we instantly say 'I know my heart is beating fast, but it will eventually slow down again.' I feel sweaty and dizzy but it is only because I have too much adrenalin in my bloodstream just now but it will fade away'

So for example: Imagine being faced with a large snarling dog just as you are about go into someone's house. Your senses send messages to the outermost surface of the brain about what they note has happened i.e. 'There's a big dog here and at anytime I can be attacked!' This information is combined with all our memory files to compare notes and the memory comes up with a match 'we are in fact in some kind of trouble so this means danger!' So a panic attack can happen which is a way for our body to start to prepare to deal with this stress.

Now that you know why you feel the way you do, you can make your own self statements for you to say to yourself. They will have the effect of reminding you about the real reason why it is happening, then take away that feeling of fear, and help calm you down. Eventually you will find that the sensations you experience begin to matter less and less as the re-programming starts to take effect. It may not happen immediately, but be assured that it will happen and all because of a positive thought.

Such an event can leave a lasting memory but over time we do kind of forget about the 'bad dog experience' but a number of years later whilst minding our own business our brain thinks back to such an event, it could be a certain smell, a voice, anything that was part of the bad experience and lo and behold a panic attack occurs.

So remember you are not alone and you are certainly not going crazy! There is help out there and it may take time but it will most certainly be worth the time and effort you put in.

We can be in school sitting our exams and a panic attack can happen, yet it

Birr Theatre & Arts Centre Celebrates its 10th Birthday!! Birr Theatre & Arts Centre is thrilled to be celebrating its 10th Birthday this coming weekend (July 30 & 31) with a great line-up of entertainment to celebrate this momentous occasion. This dedicated purpose built Theatre nestled in tree lined Oxmantown Mall which originally dates from 1888 fell into disrepair over the past few decades but has now been restored to its original glory. It is now a high quality facility providing a base for the development of the Arts in Birr town and the County of Offaly since its grand re-opening in July 2000. The origins of Birr Theatre & Arts Centre date back to 1887 when a group of people decided that Birr needed a ‘large structure that would suit multifarious requirements for the benefit and entertainment of the inhabitants at large ….a Hall that would serve a variety of purposes from a Sunday school down to a social tea party.’ (King’s County Chronicle, 17 January 1889.) A Grand Opening Night was held on 15 January 1889 with a play, continued with ‘theatricals’, a vocal and piano concert and ended with another play. The opening night was an undoubted success and set the tone for the next century. The Oxmantown Hall became an integral part of the social and cultural life of Birr until the 1980s. Unfortunately, this momentum failed and the Hall lay idle for most of the 1980s. In the early 1990’s, many locals felt that the Hall should be restored. Fortunately, Birr was declared a Heritage Town in 1993 and a group of local people undertook to purchase the building. Over €25,000 of public funds was guaranteed whilst the remaining €27,500 (£22,000) was donated locally.

Legitimate Bodies Dance Company – resident dance company since October 2007 who run year round classes for all ages and abilities along with performances and displays. Birr Theatre & Arts Centre has truly become the centre for entertainment and culture in both Birr and the surrounding locale. To date musicians who have performed at this venue include Aiker Bilk, Luka Bloom, Mundy, Jack L, Don Baker, Roesy, Frances Black, The Fureys & Davy Arthur, Ronnie Drew, Johnny McEvoy Cathy Davey, Brian Kennedy, Jimmy MacCarthy, Tommy Fleming, The High Kings, Mick Flannery, Paddy Casey, Declan O’Rourke and Mary Coughlan. Amongst the comedians who have graced this stage are Pat Short, Neil Delamere, Colin Murphy, Jon Kenny, Des Bishop, Maeve Higgins and Brendan Grace along with classical performances by Opera Ireland, Co-Opera, and Opera UK and traditional Irish artistes. Some well known national and international actors have also graced the stage: Honor Blackman, Tom Hickey, Mick Lally, Mary McEvoy, Des Keogh and Donal O’Kelly. Dance continues to increase its profile with Legitimate Bodies Dance Company holding classes for all ages and fitness levels, along with a number of performances. Pinocchio – The Dance of a Long Nose; was an incredible joint venture between the dance company and 25 boys from St. Brendan’s Boys Primary School, Birr as was Romeo & Juliet a collaboration between the dance company and the TY students of Gallen CS Ferbane which proved to be another huge success. Birr Film Club continues to go from strength to strength, its wide genre of

The first performance in the renovated Theatre and Arts Centre was in July 2000 by Liz Carroll, international fiddle player. Since then over 100,000 people have been through it’s doors, which not only caters for theatre and music events, but also contemporary dance and ballet classes, Birr Film Club and rehearsal and workshop space for Birr Stage Guild and Offaly Drama Project. It gives the opportunity to rural drama groups to present their productions in a professional theatre with its lighting and stage equipment and is also widely used for visual arts exhibitions in the dedicated exhibition area; Suas an Staighre. These run throughout the year and artists are selected by way of an application and selection process. In addiRebecca Storm - Greatest Hits in tion Birr Theatre & Arts Centre Concert 17th Sept. provides rehearsal/studio space for

films showcasing presentations from around the world. In the dedicated exhibition space “Suas an Staighre” over 20 solo visual arts exhibitions and group exhibitions showcasing the work of over 100 artists have taken place to great public acclaim. And now, with the larger foyer space there is even more space to expand the visual arts programme. Hullabaloo! – Offaly’s Children’s Arts Festival has taken place for the past 3 years engaging numerous children with sessions in dance, art, crafts, circus skills, storytelling, photography, story writing, and puppet workshops along with a number of live performances. This Festival is kindly supported by the Arts Council, Offaly County Council, Birr Theatre & Arts Centre and the and it also acknowledges the assistance of Birr Town Council, Birr Lions Club and Access Cinema. As always, Birr Stage Guild makes a huge contribution to Birr Theatre & Arts Centre. Its Irish première of The Likes of Us in March 2009, along with a multitude of pantomimes, plays and musicals, not to mention their lunchtime plays during Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival and their hosting of the One Act Drama Festival for the past number of years confirms the importance of this venue as a hub for the arts in the Midlands. Many local and national Theatre groups have all received a warm welcome in this wonderfully intimate venue. Children and younger people are extremely well catered for with a range of activities consistently provided for their entertainment and education. Camps such as the Youth Theatre Week, The Reel World – Filmmaking for Young People, the School of Rock and the Children’s Theatre Summer Camp have proved to be in great demand The huge numbers who have attended the wide and varied programme of events hosted at the Theatre are a testament to the importance of this venue and its firmly established position in the community and its environs. These increased numbers necessitated the renovation of the original foyer space which can now offer patrons a more enjoyable and comfortable theatre experience with more space before performances and during the intervals. This space can also facilitate much needed visual arts space to realise their artistic ambitions and gives the local community the opportunity to extend their experiences of the Arts. Employing a full-time Manager and six part-time staff, the additional space is very welcome indeed.

Back to School Safety Tips With over 4000 schools around the country opening their doors next month for the start of a new school year, children and parents are being reminded of dangers associated with the return to school and to take the necessary precautions. Maurice Buckley, CEO, NSAI (National Standards Authority of Ireland), says there are a number of safety issues that parents need to be aware of. “The start of a new school year can make many parents nervous as they will not be able to keep as close an eye on their children as they were during the holidays. As Ireland’s official standards body, NSAI aims to inspire consumer confidence and to help protect the public. The following safety tips will help ensure you and your kids have a safe return to school.” 1 Check the weight of school bags. The bag should not be more than 15 percent of the child’s bodyweight. A backpack with two straps that go over the shoulders can help distribute this weight evenly. The bag should be packed so that heavier items are closer to the back of the backpack, next to the body, and all compartments are used. Unnecessary items, such as text books only used on certain days should either be left at home or in a school locker. 2. Check uniform length. Although it is always wise to choose a uniform size that allows for a child’s growth during the school year, uniforms that

are especially long can make children more susceptible to tripping and falling. Adjust the uniform so that it does not drag on the ground and trip the child up. 3. Check the label on child’s car seats. The return to school will mean the return to the “school run” for many families. As well as making sure school children are properly seat belted, parents should make sure that car seats for younger children comply with the European standard requirement (UN-ECE R44.04). The label attached to the seat must contain three essential items: • The letter ‘E’ followed by a number. This number indicates the European approval authority which granted the child seat approval. • The words ISOFIX or Universal. • A weight capacity that does not exceed the weight of the child. For example 0-13kg is suitable for a new born child. Maurice Buckley, CEO, said “Whether making the regular ‘school run’ or playing sport for the school team, consumers are protected by NSAI standards that ensure safety and reduce injuries. By exercising caution and a little common-sense, families can enjoy a safe school year.” For more information on safety and accident prevention, visit www.nsai.ie.

The 133rd Annual North Tipperary (Nenagh) Agricultural Show The 133rd Annual North Tipperary – (Nenagh) Agricultural Show promises to be a great day on Bank Holiday Monday 02 August 2010. The Showgrounds are located on the Borrisokane Road in Nenagh, Co. Tipperary. Entry is free for children and €10 for adults. The main attractions include cattle, sheep, poultry, horse and pony showing classes as well as show jumping. There are competitions for the best floral displays, photography, baking, cooking, needleword, fruit and vegetable produce and the standard of entries is fantastic. rabbits, vultures and hedgehogs for petting. The donkey derby is always great fun and this year we will have a kosak rider display and for the daring among the crowd a bucking bronco challenge. Our display of vintage cars and tractors will be complimented by thrashing machines and a display of farm machinery. Our dog show is always a favourite so if you have a dog make sure to bring him too. A children’s corner has a selection of bouncy castles and cart machines for children of all ages. In 2009 we had over 40 trade stands selling and displaying local crafts, farmers markets, equine gear and all sorts of goods. The show provides entertainment to farming and family people and is a great local attraction on the Bank Holiday Monday.

DONAL RYAN MOTOR GROUP ROSCREA The Largest Insurance Approved Repairer in Tipperary

Cumulative Prius European sales accelerate to 200,000 to celebrate first decade on European market •

With cumulative European sales of Prius topping the 100,000 mark in May 2008, the figure has doubled to 200,000 in just two years Over three generations, Prius achieves 26% CO2 emissions reduction, 23% fall in fuel consumption and 30% increase in power Hybrid Synergy Drive generates record-low CO2 emissions, almost no particulates (PM) and significantly lower NOX emissions than any conventional diesel powertrain Full hybrid technology features electric driving mode with zero CO2, NOX and PM emissions Proven reliability and outstanding value for money with low running and maintenance costs

Finding increasing acceptance as a mainstream model, the full hybrid Prius celebrates the major milestone of its first decade on the European market with a dramatic acceleration in sales performance. With cumulative European sales of Prius topping the 100,000 mark in May 2008, the figure has now doubled to a200,000 in just two years. Global sales of Prius are expected to exceed 2 million units by the autumn of 2010. Launched in Japan in 1997, the first generation Prius became the first massproduced hybrid vehicle available on the European market in 2000. Launched in Ireland in 2001, there are now over 2,200 Prius on Irish roads. Voted Car of the Year by European, Japanese and American motoring journalists, the Prius has won numerous highly prestigious awards. Its globally recognised Hybrid Synergy Drive® is one of the most successful powertrains in the history of the International Engine of the Year awards, with a total of 11 titles to date. Prius has been consistently ahead of its time in addressing environmental issues, leading the field in the pursuit of improved fuel efficiency and a reduction in CO2, NOX and particulate emissions. The last decade has witnessed a fall in the fuel consumption of its Hybrid Synergy Drive® powertrain of more than 23% and a reduction in CO2 emissions of almost 26% from 120 g/km to just 89 g/km. Yet system power has simultaneously increased by 30%. Three generations of Prius have not only seen significant improvements to

successive evolutions of its Hybrid Synergy Drive® powertrain, but also a marked change in customer perceptions of full hybrid technology. First generation Prius owners were won over by the car’s unique concept and technological innovation. Second generation owners are enthusiastic early adopters of niche technologies, remaining passionate about the Prius product concept regardless of the opinions of others. Third generation customers, however, recognise the Prius as a true mainstream vehicle with on-road performance and dynamic abilities which now bear comparison with any D segment competitor. Representing the ultimate synergy of high technology and environmentallyconscientious forward thinking in powertrain design, Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive® equips the Prius with full hybrid capability, operating in petrol and electric modes alone, as well as a combination of both. Through the incorporation of an electric-only drive mode unique to full hybrid technology, the Prius addresses not only CO2 emissions, but also air quality. Even operating in normal drive mode, the Prius generates significantly lower NOX emissions than any comparable diesel engined vehicle. With vehicle range dictated by battery charge, the EV drive mode allows for urban driving at speeds of up to 45 km/h, for up to two kilometres, with minimal noise and zero CO2, NOX and particulate (PM) emissions. In addition to its highly advanced, full hybrid powertrain, the third generation Prius also introduces numerous high technology features to the segment. They include a world-first combination of a solar powered ventilation system and remote controlled air conditioning, a head-up display, touch sensitive Touch Tracer steering wheel-mounted switches and a pre-crash safety system. Despite this remarkably high content of advanced technology, the Prius maintains a peerless reputation for reliability and is exceptional value for money. Its well proven Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain has been designed for low maintenance and outstanding durability, awarding the Prius the lowest warranty cost per unit amongst all Toyota models. Best-in-market CO2 emissions and combined cycle fuel economy of 3.9 l/100 km offer Prius customers significant, pan-European tax incentives and exceptionally low running costs.

Clara GAA Notes By Peter Sheridan, Clara GAA PRO. U14 HURLERS REACH COUNTY FINAL U14 Hurling- Congratulations to the Clara U14 Hurlers on qualifying for the 2010 county final. Clara played Drumcullen in Mucklagh last Monday evening the 26th of July. Anyone at the match will agree this team has what it takes to bring the U14H title back to Clara once again. Clara were up for the game and the final scoreline of 4-8 to 1-9 does not do justice to a very skilful Drumcullen side as Clara scored 2 fortuitous goals in the last 10 minutes after the Drumcullen goalie picked up an injury. Both teams played some tough but skilful hurling and provided a very entertaining game for those who were present at the match. But in the end it was Clara who pulled away and gained a place in the county final against CRC Gaels. Clara Panel: Darren Fleming, Ryan Kelly, Leon Egan, Luke Dignam, Carl Stewart, Niall Keenan, Colm Doyle, David Newman, Donal Recks, Martin Fleming, Stephen Buckley, Adam Dolan, Mark Fallon, Seamus O’Brien, Denis Hackett, Kevin O’Meara, Jonathan Hanamy, Callum Egan, Josh Fleming, Dylan O’Keefe, Dermot Doolin. Congrats to the mentors, players and supporters on reaching Clara’s first final of 2010. IRISH OPEN Clara GAA club would like to wish Shane Lowry best wishes this weekend in Killarney on his defence of his Irish Open Golf title. U12H SEMI FINAL U12 Hurling- Clara U12 Hurlers will travel to Killcormac next Tuesday evening the 3rd of August to take on CRC Gaels in the county Semi- Final. Throw in for the game will be at 7pm.As seen from the support the U14 hurlers had in Mucklagh last Monday night Clara supporters become the sixteenth man on the team, please come along to support the lads and wear your Black and Whites BORD NA NOG DISCO Bord Na Nog Disco- Teen Disco this Sat Night 31st of July 8.30pm to 11.30pm in the GAA social centre. Music by DJ Bundyz. All welcome. “SPONSOR A SOD” “Sponsor a Sod”- Clara GAA club would like to invite all current and past members (and anyone with any connection to the club, no matter how tenuous!) to be part of the launch of the new official Clara GAA Club website and the 'Sponsor a Sod' campaign. Thanks to all who support our lotto and thanks to all our ticket sellers. U-14 FOOTBALL Clara v St Broughan’s Mon 19th July 2010 in Pairc Bride Clara. Clara played St Broughan’s in what was to be a must win game for the aforementioned if they were to progress to the semi-final stages of the championship. Clara started brightly and an early goal settled them down. After 20 minutes the game was all but over as Clara led by 3-6 to 0-1 and they just pushed on from there to win on a scoreline of 8-13 to 1-8. The overall performance was a hardworking one but there were patches in the game when Clara went to sleep. They will have to play for a full 60 minutes against the stronger teams that make the latter stages if they are to come out on top, taking nothing away from a very spirited St Broughan’s side who never gave up. Best for Clara were Darren Fleming (23) Mark Fallon (3-2) Adam Dolan (0-3). And there were strong performances from Niall Keenan, David Newman, Luke Dignam, Colm Doyle and Leon Egan. Scorers Clara – Mark Fallon 3-2 Darren Fleming 2-3, Kevin o Meara 1-1, Luke Dignam 1-1, Seamus o Brien 1-0, Adam Dolan 03,Stephen Buckley 0-1, Leon Egan 0-1 and John Hanamy 0-1.

Book Review The Irish Gardener’s Handbook by Michael Brenock Review by Elizabeth OShea Aspiring gardeners might think they’ve missed their chance this year. However, there is always something to do in the garden, and the best book to get you going is The Irish Gardener’s Handbook. There are many good things about this book, but the top thing must be that it’s Irish. Our gardening books generally come from Britain where growing conditions are different. The Irish Gardener’s Handbook is the first comprehensive book to cover growing fruit, vegetables, and herbs in Ireland. Another good thing about The Irish Gardener’s Handbook is the way it is laid out – information on different plants is presented very clearly. The book also shows when and how to sow and identifies what plants will be easy or difficult to grow, a great help to the beginning gardener. By flicking through, you can quickly find what vegetables you should be starting now and when to plant fruit this autumn. The ‘Things You May Need to Know’ section provides tips and tricks that will get you started quickly and the encouragement you need to keep going. This is probably

Bereavement and grieving In my previous article I focused upon the many feelings associated with grief. My challenge to you was to allow those feelings and see them as your friends that help you to heal and to accept the loss you are enduring. In this article I would like to look at the other 3 grief reactions - physical sensations, thought and behaviours. Some of the most commonly experienced sensations are hollowness in the stomach, tightness in the chest, tightness in the throat, over-sensitivity to noise, breathlessness and shortness of breath, muscle weakness, lack of energy and a dry mouth. Psychosomatic symptoms are also physical in nature and include headaches, dizziness, skin rashes and colitis. Some of these can be quite frightening, and being aware that they stem from stress of grief lessons their physical impact. I recall being extremely frightened one evening in the early stages of my bereavement. I was having my tea and suddenly felt a tightening in my chest. I was convinced that I was about to have a heart attack. I was greatly relieved when the doctor told me that my chest muscles had tightened because of stress. This stress also caused the skin on my hands to peel off.

By Jim O’Shea for me to drive. There were times when I had to pull in my car and try to recall where I was going. Finally there is the reality of certain behaviours following bereavement. These include sleep disturbance, appetite disturbance, social withdrawal, dreams about the deceased, avoiding reminders of the deceased, searching and calling out, sighing, restless over activity, crying, visiting places and carrying objects that remind the survivor of the deceased and treasuring objects that belong to the deceased. I experienced most of these. One of the most difficult was being very restless. I remember one Sunday when I felt unable to sit, walk, lie or stand. I could not get any relief and I felt that I would not get through that day. I finally visited a healing priest and managed to struggle on. It was a question of a minute at a time. To conclude - feelings, thoughts, physical sensations and behaviours are normal part of grieving. It is important to remember that the suppression of feelings can lead to depression, and depression can often be part of the grieving process. Some feelings are too difficult to face for a long time. Our thoughts, too can be morbid, and these contribute to depression.

Fatigue is another unpleasant side effect of grieving and for a long time I was extremely tired and dispirited. Nowadays we are all aware of what stress can do to us. The literature explains that stress suppresses the imJim O’Shea works as a counsellor from mune system and leaves us open to Furze, Thurles. Ph. 087 8211009 illnesses. Such thoughts can be very intrusive if there had been conflict in the relationship), sense of presence (deceased watching over the survivor) and hallucinations (which can be visual or auditory). Disbelief is one of the main grief reactions, especially when the death is sudden. I could not believe it that my child had been killed. He had been at Mass with us that morning and now was on a mortuary slab, never to be with us again. How could this happen to me? Unbelieveable. I recall going into a shop for the first time a week after his death. I carried my dark inner world and my disbelief with me. My wife’s disbelief was so intense that for a year she listened for the door to open at 4.30, when our child normally returned from school. I also suffered from confusion, lacked concentration, felt disoriented, and frequently it was dangerous
