Norfolk State University: We See the Future in You! Norfolk State University (NSU) was born in the midst of the Great Depression and began serving as a vessel for new and exciting possibilities for the region’s youth. Named the Norfolk Unit of Virginia Union University at its founding in 1935, Norfolk State was one of the last historically black institutions established in the Commonwealth of Virginia. By 1969, Norfolk State began its status as an independent college and was designated a university in 1979. Now, more than 80 years later, the University remains a source of inspiration for those who aspire to fulfill their dreams.
