Tennessee State University Through successive stages, Tennessee State University has developed from its founding in 1912 as Tennessee State Agricultural and Industrial State Normal School for Negroes. The university began serving students on June 19, 1912. In 1922, the institution was raised to the status of a teacher’s college and empowered to grant the bachelor’s degree. The first degrees were awarded in June of 1924. During the same year, the institution became known as the Agricultural and Industrial State Normal College, and in 1927 “normal” was dropped from the name. The General Assembly of 1941 authorized the State Board of Education to upgrade substantially the educational program of the college, which included the establishment of graduate studies leading to the master’s degree. The first master’s degree was awarded by the college in June of 1944. In August of 1951, the institution was granted university status. The university was elevated to a full-fledged landuniversity in 1958. In 1979, Tennessee State University merged with the University of Tennessee at Nashville. The present-day TSU is a comprehensive, urban, landgrant university which offers 44 bachelors degrees, 26 master’s degrees, and a specialist in education. Doctoral degrees are offered in six areas: public administration, administration and supervision, curriculum and instruction, psychology, biological science and computer information systems engineering. TSU is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. TSU’s main campus, located in North Nashville, occupies more than 500 acres. The Avon Williams campus of TSU is located in downtown Nashville, near the State Capital and central business district. TSU recently completed a $112 million capital improvement project, through which eight new facilities were constructed and all existing structures renovated.

Dr. Melvin N. Johnson began his tenure as the seventh president of Tennessee S t a t e University on June 1, 2005. Dr. Johnson served as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs and as a tenured professor of economics at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU). Prior to his appointment at WSSU, Dr. Johnson served in senior academic roles at North Carolina A&T State University. Additionally, he was a lecturer on business and economic policy for the University of Maryland, European Division, in Germany. He taught at the U.S. Air Force Academy and completed a distinguished military career as a lieutenant colonel. He received his undergraduate degree in economics from North Carolina A&T State University and earned the Master of Arts in Economics from Ball State University. He received his M.B.A. and D.B.A. in business economics and public policy from Indiana University. He has pursued postdoctoral studies at the Institute for Education Management (IEM), Institute for Management and Leadership in Education (MLE), and Harvard Seminar for New Presidents (NPS) at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Cambridge.

Johnson has been a Kellogg Leadership Fellow (National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education), Senior Fellow of Future Focus 2020 (Babcock Graduate School of Management, Wake Forest University), a Millennium Leadership Institute Protégé (American Association of State Colleges and Universities), Nissan Fellow (UCLA), and an American Banking Association Ayres Fellow (Stonier Graduate School of Banking, University of Delaware). He completed the New President’s Academy (AASCU) and the Executive Leadership Summit (Hampton University). He has also completed Leadership Nashville (2005-06), Leadership Winston-Salem and the Triad Leadership Network. Aside from his fellowships, his honors include The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, Golden Key Honor Society; Kappa Delta

Pi Honor Society, Education; Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society; Beta Gamma Sigma International Honor Society, Business and Management; Omicron Delta Epsilon, International Honor Society in Economics; Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers and Outstanding Young Men of America. Nationally, Johnson serves on the Educational Testing Service Steering Committee of Princeton, New Jersey, whose aim is to close the achievement gap; the NCAA Committee on Academic Performance and the Falcon Foundation which provides scholarships to those seeking Air Force Academy admission. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the American Association of State Colleges and Universities; American Council on Education, Commission On Effective Leadership; Commission on On-line Learning, Sloan/NASULGC and the American Association for Colleges of Teacher Education, Board of Directors (2009-2010). Locally, Dr. Johnson’s board appointments include the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce (Executive Committee) Board of Governors; the Nashville Convention and Visitors’ Bureau, Boy Scouts of America Board of Directors (Old Hickory Council); Nashville Alliance for Public Education Board of Directors; Action on Nashville’s Agenda Steering Committee; North Nashville Community Development Corporation Board of Directors; The Frist Center for the Visual Arts Board of Trustees; Tennessee Institute of Public Health Board of Directors and he co-chairs the Nashville Higher Education Advisory Council and the Board of Directors of the 100 Black Men of America, Middle Tennessee Chapter. He has provided leadership to ensure that remaining university obligations

under the court-ordered Geier Consent Decree have been met, resulting in the historic settlement of the 38-year-old court case. Tennessee State University will benefit from enhanced and continued funding of an endowment, scholarships, academic programs and facility enhancements. Additionally, he is the founding president of the Tennessee Campus Compact to promote service learning and civic engagement statewide in all public and private higher education institutions which became the 33rd such organization in the nation. He is also the president of the Tennessee College Association. Johnson has served on the Board of Advisors for the Institute for Management and Leadership in Education (MLE), Harvard Graduate School of Education, Cambridge; Board of Trustees of the North Carolina Baptist Hospitals, Inc. and the North Carolina Banking Commission. Additional civic affiliations include Rotary International (Downtown Nashville), 100 Black Men of America (Nashville), National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (Life Member), Sigma Pi Phi Boule (Chi), and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (Tau Lambda). Johnson received the Ball State University Outstanding Black Alumni Award (2009) Most Entrepreneurial HBCU President, Opportunities Funding Corporation, Atlanta (2009); Lion of Zion Award, Opportunities Industrialization Center (OIC), Nashville (2008); Lifelong Excellence and Leadership in Higher Education award from the Northeast Business and Economics Association at Yeshiva University (N.Y.); The Leadership Award in Education from the Trumpet Awards Foundation (2007); The Leadership Award from Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc (Tau Lambda, 2006) and was commissioned by the Kentucky Legislature as a Kentucky Colonel. He has been selected as one of Nashville’s “Top 50 Business and Community Leaders.” He and First Lady Dr. Marcy Dingle Johnson, have adult twin daughters, DeAndra J. Cullen (husband, Gary R. Cullen) and Monet J. Bloodworth (husband, Dr. Leotis Bloodworth, Jr.) and one adult son Melvin Roschaun Johnson (wife, Phyllis C. Johnson). The Johnsons are the proud grandparents of Briana, Jailyn, and Lauryn Bloodworth; Alaira Cullen, and Schaun Christopher Johnson.

Since taking over the helm of the Tennessee S t a t e University athletic department back in April of 2002, Teresa Lawrence Phillips has made good on her promise to move the department to a higher level. In her time as athletic director, the athletic department has made tremendous strides on the playing field, on the Tennessee State University campus and community as well as in the classroom. Some accomplishments under the Phillips administration include the launching of the first official website for TSU Athletics in August of 2002, the revitalization of the Big Blue Booster Club, the recognition of Ohio Valley Conference Scholar Athletes, and conference championships in volleyball and women’s track. Phillips also has the distinction of being the first woman ever to coach an NCAA Division I men’s basketball team en

route to being named one of the “101 Most Influential Minorities in Sports” by Sports Illustrated in 2003. She was also named as the Second Most Influential Woman in Sports in Tennessee by The Tennessean newspaper. It was not the first time Phillips had been in the national limelight, as she was named USA Today’s National Coach of the Year in 1990 and was a two-time OVC Coach of the Year selection. No stranger to athletic success herself, she was head coach of the Lady Tigers basketball program at TSU for 11 seasons from 1989-2000. Phillips guided the 1993–94 squad to the program’s first-ever OVC regular season crown, the Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship, and the team’s first appearances ever in the NCAA tournament. She and her staff enjoyed their most successful season in 1994–95 as the Lady Tigers (22–7, 12–4 OVC) gained a share of the regular season title. TSU claimed its second consecutive tournament title and a trip to the NCAA tournament. Facing 21st-ranked Oregon State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the Lady Tigers clawed all night before losing in overtime, 88–75.

for four years. During that time, she guided the Bulldogs to WIAC League and Tournament Championships in 1987 and 1988 and was tabbed WIAC Coach of the Year twice (1987, 1988). Phillips also served as the National Youth Sports Drug Program Education Specialist and served on the NCAA Basketball Rules Committee for two years. She compiled a 68-34 overall record with the Bulldogs. She graduated from Vanderbilt University with bachelor’s degrees in Economics and Business Education before obtaining a Masters in Education from TSU in 1999. Phillips, who helped recruit six All-Americans and seven AllState players, spent four years as an assistant coach with the Lady Commodores from 1981 to 1984. Phillips earned several honors as a three-year letter winner at Vanderbilt. She was the first recipient of the Lady Commodore Athlete of the Year honor, given to the best all-around female athlete. In addition, she received the Nashville Civitan’s Sportsmanship Award in 1979 and 1980. Community oriented, Phillips has served on the Boys’ and Girls’ Club Board of Directors since 1995. She has held memberships in several boards and organizations, including the Black Coaches Association, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, the Nashville Sports Council, the NCAA Championship and Competition Cabinet and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Phillips has two sons, Micah and Kyle.

Outlook The Tennessee State University softball team finished the 2009 season with an overall record of 18-31 and an 8-15 conference mark, earning the Tigers the eighth place seed. As a team, TSU had a .241 batting average and a 4.24 era while tallying 300 hits and 156 RBI. Second team selection, Metzger had the second best hitting percentage on the team and led the squad with 28 runs. The Rochelle, Ill. native tallied a team-best 14 doubles, tied for third in the OVC. She recorded 44 hits, second best on the team and notched 18 RBIs. Metzger had a slugging percentage of .429 and a fielding percentage of .942 while recording multiple hits in 14 games.

Webb was also named to the All-OVC second team, turning in seven multi-RBI games and 10 multi-hit games last season. She had the third best batting average on the team and tallied a team third best 39 hits on the season. The Knoxville, Tenn. native led the team in sacrifice flies and notched 23 RBIs,

Gardner and Vincent made several appearances for TSU last season. Gardner tallied seven hits, eight runs and a .250 slugging percentage while Vincent notched 12 hits, six runs and a .215 slugging percentage. Jennifer Culberson saw the most action out of the freshmen and led the team in stolen bases last year. She has already jumped into second place on the career stolen bases list with 32.

Perkins has been solid for TSU since her freshman season and currently ranks in the top five in a number of career records lists. She is second in career doubles while ranking third in career homeruns and hits. Perkins is fourth on the career triples list and fifth in career RBI. Last season she played in 47 games and tallied a slugging percentage of .415. Last season, She had a batting average of .212 and led the team in sacrifice bunts with 14. She led the team in hitting during her freshman and sophomore year. The Tigers will also return the leadership of senior Christy Hill. the success that has made it the nation’s eighth-oldest NCAA Division I conference. For only the second time in a decade, the Conference expanded by adding Southern Illinois University Edwardsville as the league’s 11th member in 2008. The move expanded the OVC’s geographical footprint to the St. Louis market and marked the first change in membership since expanding to the state of Alabama (Jacksonville State, Samford) in 2003. The 2009-10 school year saw a change in leadership as Beth DeBauche was named the seventh full-time Commissioner in league history on July 28. She is currently one of just five females to be the head of a Division I conference, and one of just eight to lead a Division I conference all-time. The last three commissioners of the OVC have moved onto jobs as the commissioner of the Big Ten, Big 12 and the Mid-American Conferences. The OVC’s proud past dates back to 1948, but seeds for the new league were actually planted in 1941. It was then that Roy Stewart, the athletics director at Murray State, Charles (Turkey) Hughes, the athletics director at Eastern Kentucky, and Kelly Thompson, the public relations director at Western Kentucky, first broached the idea of forming a new conference. Discussions were put on hold by World War II, but reemerged Feb. 27-28, 1948 at the Kentucky Hotel in Louisville as the three original institutions combined with Morehead State, Louisville and Evansville to form the OVC. In the 1950s, the OVC became a pioneer on a much more significant scale socially. During times of racial segregation, league member Morehead State became one of the first non-traditionally black mid-southern institutions to accept a black student. In 1958, Marshall Banks earned athletically-related aid at Morehead, which signed a second black athlete, Howard Murphy, a year later. In 1961, Murphy earned all-conference recognition as a halfback in football. With racial barriers broken, the rest of the institutions in the league began to provide educational and athletic opportunities to AfricanAmericans. A first in the OVC occurred in 2008, when the league had a first round draft pick in both the NFL (Tennessee State’s Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie) and Major League Baseball (Eastern Kentucky’s Christian Friedrich) Drafts in the same school year. The playing field isn’t the only place where OVC athletes are working hard. The league also recognizes excellence in the classroom. Six Scholar-Athlete Awards are presented yearly to male and female athletes, while others are commended for their academic success by being Medal of Honor recipients or earning a spot on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Additionally, the league annually presents one institutional Academic achievement Award, as well as separate team awards in each Conference-sponsored sport. The vision of leadership demonstrated by the Founding Fathers in 1948 remains alive today as the OVC prepares for the future. One example is in regard to the current trend in collegiate athletics administration for increased involvement of university presidents in setting policies and making rules. The presidents of OVC institutions, however, have always governed the Conference, long before presidential governance became a national theme. The OVC sponsors the following sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis and track for men, and basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and volleyball for women. In addition, the OVC also sponsors the combined men’s and women’s sport of rifle. Now in its seventh decade of competition, the Ohio Valley Conference has grown significantly from its humble beginnings while increasing the number of athletics opportunities it provides for students. Current league representatives include charter members Eastern Kentucky University, Morehead State University and Murray State University, along with Austin Peay State University, Eastern Illinois University, Jacksonville State University, Southeast Missouri State University, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Tennessee State University, Tennessee Technological University and the University of Tennessee at Martin. Tennessee State has been a member of the Ohio Valley Conference since 1986.

Head Coach, Joyce Maudie on to head the softball program at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. After leading the Warhawks to the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional Finals, she was named Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year.

NINTH SEASON Joyce Maudie became Tennessee State University’s head softball coach in 2002. In 2007, Maudie guided the Tigers to their first winning season in program history, with a 35-23 record. With a wealth of head coaching experience, Maudie has amassed more than 300 career wins. She has been recognized by four diﬀerent conferences as Coach of the Year including receiving the Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year Award in 2007. Under her guidance, thirty five Tigers were recognized as NFCA Academic All-Americans and the TSU softball program has been nationally ranked academically among the top Division I teams, with a team average, 3.2 overall GPA. Along with commitment to academic and athletic excellence, Maudie has involved the Tigers heavily in community service. The Tigers assist with neighborhood clean ups and Habitat for Humanity. In 2009, the Tigers receieved the Ohio Valley Conference Sportsmanship Award. Coach Maudie has held several head coaching positions. She began her career at her alma mater Indiana (Penn.) University. After two years, she moved

After a two-year stint in Wisconsin, Maudie moved on to coach at Drexel University. In her first season, the Dragons won the 1992 North Athletic Conference (NAC) regular season title and advanced to their first ever post season. At the completion of the season, Maudie garnered the NAC Coach of the Year Award. In 1993, Maudie took over the softball program at Barton College where she led the team to their first winning season while advancing to the NAIA Regional Tournament. In 1995, Maudie received her third conference coach’s award in five years when she was named the Carolina Intercollegiate Athletic Coach of the Year. With a successful reputation, Coach Maudie was selected to start the softball program at Ole Miss. Her squad tallied a 3.34 overall team GPA and was academically ranked in the top five among Division I schools. In addition, Maudie also spent a season as an assistant at Middle Tennessee coaching pitchers. Currently Maudie is a member of the NFCA (1990) and just completed her third term on the USA Today/Division I Top 25 Poll ranking committee. She has been selected as a clinic director for the NCAA’s Yes Clinic every year since 2005. The Yes Clinic is held in conjunction with the Women’s College World Series. Karyn Gallivan is a certified Athletic Trainer with over 20 years of experience in all facets of Sports Medicine, including traditional athletic training at the university, high school and clinical settings, personal fitness training, strength and conditioning and teaching. She is an instructor in the HPSS Department at Tennessee State University and oversees the strength & conditioning and nutrition education for TSU softball.

Brad Knox completed his internship with the TSU softball team in fall 2009 and has worked with the team since. A four-year member of the TSU Cheerleading squad, Brad is double majoring in Physical Education and Exercise Science. He is certified as a physical educator and is expected to graduate in May 2010.

Katie Jordan is in her first year with the Tiger softball program. She graduated from the University of Dayton in May 2009 with a bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree in Exercise Science. She played four years at UD as a second baseman and utility player. She is currently working toward a doctorate in physical therapy.

SPORTS MEDICINE Brandie McKinney Graduate Assistant Trainer

Athletic Training/Sports Medicine A team of full-time athletic trainers are on staff to provide daily treatment and application of therapeutic modalities to the student-athletes and are led by head athletic trainer, Monroe Abram. The athletic training staff is also available to provide evaluation, information on injury prevention and to administer rehabilitation, if necessary. The TSU athletic medical services are provided by team orthopedist Rob Dyer of Tennessee Orthopedic Alliance. TOA provides the TSU athletic department all sports medicine related services, including surgery and diagnostic testing. Mission Statement It is the mission of the Tennessee State University Sports Medicine Staff to provide each student-athlete with the opportunity to perform at the highest possible level throughout his or her career. We strive to provide the most efficient and effective care available to help prevent, manage, and treat athletic related injuries in conjunction with the Administration, the Coaching Staff, and the athletes themselves. Our methods are based on sound medical and rehabilitative principles in conjunction with consideration for personal and team goals. These guidelines are based on those outlined by the NCAA and on ethical medical practice. We are committed to providing professional and proficient care for all those in our charge.

Bridget Metzger Earns ESPN The Magazine Academic All- District Honors Nashville --- Softball’s Bridget Metzger was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Bridget Metzger, a junior infielder from Rochelle, Ill., holds a 3.86 GPA in dental hygiene. She is second on the team with a .286 batting average while leading the Tigers with 14 doubles. Metzger recorded 44 hits and drove in 18 during the 2009 season. A total of six Ohio Valley Conference Student-Athletes garnered ESPN The Magazine Academic AllDistrict honors. In addition to Tennessee State’s Bridget Metzger, Morehead State’s Bianca Cardenas, Tennessee Tech’s Lacie Coquerille, and UT Martin’s Laura Roberts were all named to the District IV second team while SIU Edwardsville’s Courtney Mall earned District V first team honors while the Cougars’ Lauren Zembruski was named to the second team.
