Winery Cellar Tour and Tasting Still looking for the right wine to pair with that Thanksgiving feast? Prepare yourself for an education. The award-winning Cape May Winery has been producing delicious wines since 1994 and has become a destination for wine lovers. The experience begins in the vineyard where you’ll see how grapes are grown. Then enter the winery itself to see how wine is made and bottled. To cap off your experience, enjoy tasting several of these local wines. Maybe you’ll happen upon the perfect pairing for your turkey. Tour begins at 3pm, admission is $20, and tickets can be purchased by calling (609) 884-5404.

Performances are held at The First Presbyterian Church at 500 Hughes Street. Tickets are $23 for general admission, $13 for full-time students, and anyone age 12 and under is free. The Police Blotter

Every week we feature quirky police reports from small towns across America. Found on the website www.smalltownmisfit.com. RIO GRANDE, NM: A Hernandez caller said an individual violated a 100-yearold restraining order she had against him, because her mother saw him in the area. The call was transferred to another agency. – The Rio Grande Sun

Learn Russian With Tanya

YOU probably couldn’t throw a stone in Cape May without hitting an Eastern European person, though we condemn such acts. We at Exit Zero embrace our Commie Cousins (we’re joking!) and offer a weekly lesson in communication. Please note – this “Russian” is our phonetic interpretation. Do you have a day in your country where you give thanks for all that has gone right in the past year? V vashei strane est den, kogda vy govorite spasibo za vse, chto poluchilos v proshedshem godu? Here is how your Russian-speaking friend is likely to respond: Net, no u nas est den, kogda my prosim proshenie za vse, chto ne poluchilos. Which translates to: No, but we have a day where we apologize for all that has gone wrong. – Tanya Zotava

Weird Word Of The Week

Fantods It seems that one can never have just one fantod. Rather, fantods, or extremely nervous feelings, always come in multiples.

A Story From The Past

Don Pocher

FEAST your eyes on the original Colton Court, which was demolished in 1971 in the midst of Cape May’s Urban Renewal campaign. It was replaced with a small, two-story motor inn. Next door to Colton Court was the original Sea Crest, demolished in 1978 and also replaced with a motor inn. The rock jetty in the center of the picture was almost completely covered by the most recent beach replenishment program. A portion of it is still visible beyond the water’s edge. – Ben Miller

Facebook Mystery Contest

KNOW your way around Cape May? Think of yourself as the observant type? Feast your eyes on the photograph above, taken by our resident cryptographer Dan Mathers. If you think you know what inn is surrounded by such beautiful foliage, then you have a chance to win a $50 gift certificate to spend at a local business. Go to the Exit Zero Facebook page before Monday for a fullsize, full-color photo and instructions on how to enter – follow the instructions carefully. And, don’t worry if you have never used Facebook before – it’s easy! Just ask your six-year-old nephew. To enter, look for the mystery photo at www.facebook.com/ exitzeropublishing. Good luck!

Random Fact Of The Week

DESPITE the way they are often portrayed, pilgrims did not dress solely in black and white nor did they accessorize with buckles. Buckles did not come into fashion until the 1700s at which time artists added them to the attire of the subjects in their paintings.

Fortune Cookie Of The Week J Change is inevitable... except for vending machines. J ONCE a week, the folks at Exit Zero eat at Cape Orient, the island’s fine Asian restaurant. Sometimes we find pearls of wisdom at the end of our meal. And sometimes we don’t. The above fortune cookie was eaten with chicken pad thai and mango chicken. Please note: Any typos are not ours, but those of the fortune cookie manufacturers. We print them as we find them.

Ramblings From The Editors

W

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends

E RECENTLY received an enthusiastic email from John Cooke, the new president of the Cape May Chamber of Commerce. It seems that Cape May has been chosen by TripAdvisor.com as one of a few select destinations to be highlighted in their Spotlight Destinations. Cape May will be one of 80 destinations featured on the TripAdvisor homepage. A photo of Cape May and a 50-word description will appear in rotation with 79 other destinations. The photo and description will be joined by a link to Cape May’s TripAdvisor page and the Cape May Chamber of Commerce website. So, what does that mean for Cape May? TripAdvisor is the world’s busiest tourism website. People rely on their usergenerated content for unbiased reviews of hotels, restaurants, rental properties and more. It has 20 million registered members and tracked more than 40 million unique hits this past July alone. Even if Cape May is one of only 80 destinations to be featured on the homepage, that still means a half million unique visitors would have seen the Spotlight for Cape May this past July. Doug McMain, owner of The Queen Victoria B&B put the impact in perspective for us: “We have about 3,000 check-ins per year, and about half of them visited TripAdvisor. Our webmaster recently told me that 75% of all travelers visit the site before booking a trip. Being featured on TripAdvisor in a group of 80 towns from all over the world definitely puts Cape May on the map in a premier way.” Because they are registering such

massive numbers, and because the Spotlight will be directly linked to www. capemaychamber.com, we asked John if he thought the chamber’s website was up to snuff for handling that kind of traffic – we wondered if he thought it would attract tourists or be a turn-off. “That’s a tough question,” John said. “The executive board met this morning [Monday] and discussed making changes to ensure a higher rate of viewer retention on our website.” When pressed for more information John said, “What I can tell you is that we are taking steps to work on the website.” It is our opinion that the chamber’s website could use a serious revamp… as does Cape May city council’s. For a resort town of our caliber, it is a travesty not to have a tourism website that reflects the city’s qualities. Compare the aforementioned website to the Cape Cod chamber’s website (www.capecodchamber.org) or that of the tourism authority for the Outer Banks (www.outerbanks.org). Fortunately, John seems to be conscious of this. “I would absolutely say

this represents a significant change in the way that the chamber will be pursuing tourism,” he said. “In the past we have focused our advertising efforts entirely on print media. Since I became president I have promoted the idea of marketing Cape May to a global audience, and digital media is the only way to do that.” We’re right there with you, John – just because Cape May is a Victorian town doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be pursuing all the avenues that modern technology has to offer. ATTENTION SUSAN NILES (or her friends): Your photos are ready and paid for. It is quite a cool picture, and we have been holding them for quite some time. CAPE May can be quiet in November, but there are perks to year-round residence. Exit Zero was on hand Saturday for Martini Beach’s last night of the season, and while we will miss this spot in the winter months, it was a great send-off. The good people at Martini Beach put out a gourmet buffet packed with some of our favorites: Moroccan chicken, stuffed flounder and a carving station stocked with turkey and pork. Like any self-respecting buffet patrons, we were determined to get our money’s worth and loaded our plates. We enjoyed our meal on the enclosed porch with a bottle of white wine (the buffet cost $15 and wine was discounted 15%, so it was impossible not to get our money’s worth). Our meal was made even better thanks to music from the Eddie Morgan Trio. Later Geno White made an appearance on guitar, playing jazzy versions of Pink Floyd songs like “Money.” When spotted the next night at

Holiday Happenings In Cool Cape May

I

The Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts prepares a packed calender of Christmas events

T’S beginning to look a lot like Christmas in the nation’s first seaside resort. Thanks to the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities (MAC) and Cape May’s support of cultural and heritage tourism, our town has become a top Christmastime destination. The city is transformed into an old-fashioned winter wonderland for the holidays and celebrates the season with seven weeks of special events. Victorian homes, hotels, churches and inns are decorated for the season with twinkling lights, boughs of holly and a wreath at every door. The festivities continue all the way through January 2. Take a trolley ride to see the city’s twinkling lights, tour the Victorian gems decked out for the season, indulge with food and wine events, and celebrate the most wonderful time of the year! There is holiday entertainment for every member of the family. Unless otherwise noted, all events listed below are sponsored by the MidAtlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities. For more information, call (609) 884-5404 or visit www.capemaymac.org.

One of many beautifully decorated Victorian homes you’ll see in town this season.

The historic Fairthorne Cottage will be open for self-guided tours daily from 1–4pm, plus Thursday and Friday evenings from 7–9pm. Tours can be combined with lunch and dinner packages. Each visitor will receive a full-color program book with information about the designers, products and vendors. Admission is $10 for adults and $7 for children. The show house will be closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. There will be no evening hours on December 24 and 31. A Cape May County Thanksgiving Tradition

MAN, I wish that Mayflower boat would have sunk! Then we would still have our land. – A Real Native American ***

Early Birds 1 to 2:30 p.m.

WHAT the hell is a Pilgrim anyway? And where did that name come from? – Cape May {Spouty Offy Editor’s Note: A pilgrim is obviously one who undertakes a pilgrimage, literally ‘ far afield’. This is traditionally a visit to a place of some religious or historic significance; often a considerable distance is traveled, duh! Okay... we actually copied this from Wikipedia so no duh!} *** PLYMOUTH Rock... Is that the new kind of music that the kids are listening to today? – Erma {Spouty Offy Editor’s Note: No, that is where the first pilgrims landed in Massachusetts.} *** I NEVER heard of Plymouth Rock but I do remember a show on HBO called Fraggle Rock. – Cape May *** DID you know that Canada also celebrates Thanksgiving? What do they have to be thankful for... ice? – Cape May *** DON’T you think turkeys deserve a break from being eaten on Thanksgiving... I say we all eat tofurkey this year! – West Cape May *** WHERE can you buy one of those giant buckles that the pilgrims had... I see those coming back into style because you know... fashion is cyclical! And one of those big barrelled guns would be cool too. – Cape May

SCURVY actually sounds like it would be fun... but it’s not. Just ask the pilgrims. – Cape May ***

Fresh Roasted Whole Turkey Dinner

I KNOW this has nothing to do with pilgrims but I think that Sasquatch helped me find some tools at a local store last week. – Cape May *** I’D LIKE to give thanks to Exit Zero for allowing me this column for all you Spouty Offyers! – Mr. Spouty Offy Whale *** A QUARTER page in your awesome publication is only $70... Wow, that’s a cheap way to reach 10,000+ readers each week. And you said that a half page is only $110. That’s not really fair to your competition, is it? – Cape May

Customer Service

I

The life and times of a waitress in Cool Cape May... by Molly Stone

HAVE trouble saying no. If a customer wants a happy anniversary message spelled out in blueberries, I do it. If he wants his olives stuffed by hand with blue cheese, I find the time. If he wants to replace his carrots with a side of clam chowder, I go to battle with the understandably irked line cooks. One would think that being accommodating in the restaurant is the mark of a good waitress. It’s actually the mark of a pushover. But, in an industry where the customer is always right, a server sometimes has trouble putting her foot down. “I want Pasta Bolognese,” one guest told me. I explained to him that this isn’t a dish on the menu, but he was not deterred. “Check with the chef,” he told me. “But–” “Just go,” he said. So I did. And the chef told me to buzz off. “Sorry, sir,” I told the man, “no pasta.” He looked at me without saying a word. I smiled, hoping to break his icy cold stare with kindness. “Maybe you’d like to try

the chicken?” No response. “Or the cod?” Silence. I started to lose my composure. “Or maybe,” I said, “I could check again?” He nodded, and I scurried back into the kitchen. The chef eventually agreed to come up with the pasta dish, but not before lecturing me on the importance of staying in control of my tables. By now, I am used to upsetting the cooks, and they are used to me; this isn’t the problem. The problem is that my servinginduced habit of saying yes to everything has carried over into my personal life. Even though I’ve never been able to keep so much as a house plant alive, I recently agreed to pet sit for a family with

two puppies and a hermit crab. For a week, I woke up terrified that I’d managed to kill the crustacean. I spent every morning holding Pincher’s shell to my ear, listening with bated breath for a little crab heartbeat. And last year, never considering that a fat man in a red polyester suit could be a terrifying sight for a child, I agreed be a babysitter for four kids at the West Cape May Christmas Parade. I spent the night pushing a buggy full of hysterical toddlers away from a herd of dancing elves. What’s worse, because I’ve forgotten how to say no, I often end up agreeing to join hygienically-challenged, semi-literate men for a date at Tisha’s or a beer at the C-View. If I end up marrying a dud one day, I’m blaming my job. I’m a sucker, I know. But I don’t want to be a yes-woman any longer. So help me out. Don’t reinvent the menu or ask me to craft you a piece of abstract blueberry art, and I’ll do my best to make sure you have a nice dinner. And maybe, just maybe, this is an arrangement we can both say yes to.

The Old Fogey

H

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

OW I love Thanksgiving. I played no small part in making it what it is today, though I am not one to boast. Back in my day – the date of which eludes me now, but I recall we rode horses and had pearly-handled six-guns at our waists... or was it that we wore pearls? I forget. Anyway, back in my day, Thanksgiving was a rougher affair, and I am ashamed to say we did have less of the civilized dinner and more of the sort of evening which ended with us full of home-made liquor and chasing the area’s put-upon Indians around on horseback, shooting in the air and shouting “How’s THIS for thanks for your kindess? Yeeha!” In later years we realized the error of our ways and this practice ceased, out of compassion and the fact that there seemed to be no more Indians left. This was doubly unfortunate because I had just – through repeated application of the butt of my revolver to foreheads – taught my gang (we all had gangs then, and mustaches) to refer to this fine land’s original occupants not as

Y S T I T C H

Injuns, but Native Americans. Not long after, I decided that the twin holiday activities of tormenting locals and shooting buffalo were no longer acceptable and introduced the notion of eating turkey so as to ensure everyone was too stuffed (though not in the same manner as the turkey) to indulge in any mayhem. Oh, the Thanksgiving dinners myself and the late Mrs D’Catur used to hold in Cape May. We once seated 500 people at one table, which was carved from a single

Extensive collection of cross stitch & needlework designs Custom Framing 315 Ocean Street, Unit 9 Washington Commons Cape May, NJ 08204 1-866-563-5399 • 609-898-9606 stitchbystitchcapemay.com

giant redwood tree, and ate between us a f lock of turkeys that, when they were herded into town, took a day to pass any one point. Young Albert herded them, too, ensuring good order for the small cost of a few hundred sneakily consumed birds. Of course in those days turkeys were natural birds, used to running wild, and weighed less than ten ounces, most of which was beak and attitude, and so one diner could munch his way through 200 or more before the table was restocked. Nowadays your turkey is a genetic monster created by Yankee scientists, many of them Nazis snatched from Berlin in the last days of the War. It weighs over a ton, with no wings and a dozen legs. Stuffing such a bird takes a team of grown men, and in more than one instance a hapless Thanksgiving cook has been roasted inside his or her bird. Such creations have no place in the D’Catur household, and Young Albert has been sent forth to bring back a brace of wild turkeys each day in preparation. Ideally, not pre-chewed.

Confessions Of A Cape May Lover

I

An enthusiast’s view of America’s Original Seaside Resort... by Meghan Kunz

’VE often found it interesting to uncover which life experiences inf luence writers. Sometimes a trip to the store will spark a topic of interest, which may lead to a compelling human interest story. Other times it may be a more significant event that causes the writer to ref lect inward and delve past the idiosyncrasies of everyday monotony. Then there are instances when these two moments collide: during our daily lives we may discover greater meaning — an epiphany of sorts. And sometimes that happens right here in Cape May. Truth be told, I don’t have a good track record when it comes to vacations. Tragedy often precedes my getaways: a relative falls ill, a pet falls ill, someone takes a mean stumble and is now hobbling around in a cast, a tree falls on our house… you name it, it has happened. So I’ve become accustomed to bracing myself for any and all possibilities. Still, I was taken by surprise last Friday morning. Breakfast at the Mad Batter, a beautifully sunny, crisp autumn morning, great

conversation with my parents: I receive a text message from my co-worker. It takes me a moment to figure out what day it is (because when you’re away from home, even for one night, time seems suspended). My co-worker delivers dreaded news — my boss passed away the night before. This was unexpected. Though he had recently been ill, both the illness and diagnosis were fairly new, and everyone felt hopeful. But now the morning took a different turn. The day which started out feeling full

of promise now felt unreal. That’s the only way to describe it. If we drove out of Cape May and back home, would something change? Did this really happen? The thoughts that entered my mind: he never had a chance to enjoy his retirement, to travel, purchase a vacation home, or walk his daughter down the aisle. Just like that — he would never see this beautiful Friday morning. But I’m still here. And what my boss taught me once he was gone is just as important as what I learned from him over the past nine years. Quite simply: enjoy the moment. Breathe in the morning, take chances, and embrace the fear of embarking on new adventures. Start something new today — a book, a restaurant, a class. You always wanted to run a bed and breakfast? Find out how — do your homework, delve into the research — don’t give up because you think it can never happen. This loss reminded me of what I need to be grateful for this Thanksgiving — the opportunities that every new morning brings. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

The Answer Lady

T

Wise answers to perplexing questions

HE Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manners of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart, and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Dear Answer Lady On my best friend’s first date with her new boyfriend, he took her to dinner at the Merion Inn. On their second date, they hit a couple of art galleries followed by drinks at Carney’s. Third date, he took her to Henry’s and bought her a diamond ring! I think he’s rushing things, but she seems infatuated. How do I stop her from making a huge mistake? – Bummed Out or Bum’s Rush? Dear Bummed To use the vernacular of the day, (and one of the few expressions the Answer Lady is actually “down with”): uh, good luck with that. One of two things is going on here: your friend has been fortunate enough to meet the love of her life, they are on the same schedule, and this lightning-like courtship pace will have no effect whatsoever as to whether or not they live

happily ever after, or…. not. Your job as the BFF is to absolutely express your concerns, either with a “Hey, what’s the big rush?” or a “Can we talk? I’m a little worried about how fast this is going,” depending upon your relationship. You should brace yourself for the likelihood, however, that no matter which approach you take, your words are going to go in one ear and out the other. You don’t mention that you have a beef with the man himself, by the way. If you ARE concerned about him specifically, say it.

Otherwise, express your concerns and then step out of the way. You are either about to witness a train wreck, in which case you should be there to clean up the wreckage, or a fairy-tale ending, in which case you can be a supporting character. Literally. Dear Answer Lady Am I turning into a cranky old lady, or are the holidays arriving earlier and earlier each year? – Suzie Scrooge Dear Sister Suzie From one cranky old lady to another: yes and yes. One has barely begun recovering from the Labor Day hangover before being bombarded with Halloween candy, and whilst still knee-deep in Snickers wrappers, television programs and magazines are featuring turkey recipes. The Answer Lady expects that by the time she is in her 80s there will be Christmas music playing at 4th of July parties. But she digresses. This is one of those nothingyou-can-do-about-it scenarios, isn’t it? If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. So strap on those reindeer antlers, shelve the diet, and pass the turkey. Extra gravy, please.

Activity Of The Week

A weekly column by Catherine Dugan. This week: Candelight Walk at Cold Spring Village

O

N AN autumn night, when all of nature conspires to force you indoors, lingering outside feels decadent. Visiting a place at dusk that you normally see only in daylight adds to that forbidden feeling, like you’re staying out past curfew. And when that place is suggestive of other lives and other times, it’s even more delightful. The Candlelight Walk at Historic Cold Spring Village gives you that feeling. This event is a fundraiser for the Village, but the $25 admission fee feels like a bargain. Touring this otherworldly place after hours is magical; you’ll feel like a guest in the early 1800s, the “age of homespun.” Luminaries lead you to the Welcome Center, where your visit begins. Start here with wine and cheese. Other houses in the village offer chili, chicken wings, pulled pork and beer. Desserts served in the Pavilion cap off the evening. Music contributes to the festive mood, but nothing interferes with the history lessons. Historic Cold Spring Village is a recreated village with period buildings relocated to the site from other locations in

Cape May County and the surrounding area. Costumed interpreters, including artisans like a blacksmith, basket weaver, printer and bookbinder, bring the town to life. Farm animals and gardens help to supply the households with the raw materials rural families needed. On this chilly evening, the lack of modern insulation is apparent, and the fireplace feels cozy. It’s a reminder of the deep freeze to come, the 40 cords of wood it would take to keep the chill of winter away,

and the hard work involved in cutting it all by hand. No wonder families were large! Maryellen Norton, a member of the Friends of Historic Cold Spring Village, participated in the Candlelight Walk along with friends Sue Graves and Marie Pagliuca. They munched on popcorn from the schoolhouse, feeling grateful that the teacher couldn’t catch them talking and hang them up by their braids. They were part of an enthusiastic crowd of supporters who enjoyed the evening, proving that this attraction, located three miles north of Cape May, is worth visiting again and again. Historic Cold Spring Village is closed for the season, except for special events. For example, you can celebrate Wassail Day on December 4, when admission is free. There will be holiday sing alongs and a visit from Father Christmas. The Country Store, which features items like dunce caps and quill pens (perfect for playing school) is open weekends until December 19. Some Country Store items are also available online at www. hcsv.org. Next week: Take a House Tour

The Dating Column

Stella Dixon’s take on romance at the shore – where the odds are good, but the goods are odd.

I

’LL never understand men who preface a kiss with a question. It’s a beautiful night and you’re standing under a Cape May moon. He looks into your eyes, and you into his. He leans in, you lean in. You pucker up and, instead of planting one on you, he asks if he can kiss you. Stop being so polite, you want to say, and make a move already. At times like these I don’t want a gentleman who asks permission; I want a cowboy. Don’t get me wrong, nothing makes a man less of a man than forcing himself onto a woman. But now and then even the demurest of ladies wants to feel her loins trembling like the heroine from a Danielle Steele novel, and a timid guy just won’t get the job done. If I’ve been giving all the go-ahead signals, feel free to scoop me up like a bona fide James Bond. I can’t imagine 007 ever hesitating in a moment of passion. I blame technology. Men never have to be so bold as to actually approach a woman anymore; they can send a text message, an email, or a wall post to gauge a reaction first. Face to face, without the buffer of cyber-

space, guys freeze, straight-jacketed by their own fear of rejection. Paris may have gone to war over Helen of Troy, but I doubt he was any more frightened than a modern man caught without his cell. Recently, waiting in line at the pharmacy, I locked eyes with the tall, handsome guy standing in front of me. I felt sure he’d strike up a conversation, but he bashfully turned his attention to his cell phone instead. Sick of meeting timorous men, I decided to force

this one into a conversation. “Come here often?” I asked him. He flashed me an adorable, dimpled smile and, in between the tabloid aisle and the laxatives, he introduced himself as Ben. I was just about to pat myself on the back for making the first move, when the pharmacist interrupted our drug store connection. “Birth date?” she asked Ben. “1-16-91,” he told her. That’s when I realized that the object of my pharmacy line affection was 19 years old. So I did what any other self-respecting gal would do; I pretended to text while he finished paying for his prescription, probably a jar of Flintstone Chewables, and left the store. I guess I can’t very well chastise men for hiding behind technology if I’m going to do the same myself. And I’d be lying if I denied Googling a guy or two before a date. Perhaps I’m a hypocrite if I speak out against the role technology has played in altering dating dynamics. All I know for sure is that, after so many years of 21st-century dating, it can’t hurt to reflect and recharge.

The Movie Column

Tom Sims, Executive Director of the Cape May Film Festival, reviews “Unstoppable”

F YOU’VE heard about Denzel Washington’s latest action film, Unstoppable, about an out-of-control locomotive, you may have thought: “not for me.” I don’t blame you for that initial reaction. At first glance, I felt the same way. But Washington is one of Hollywood’s best leading men, and I’m not sure he would put his imprint on a film that would run off track from his normal gold standard. Two-time Oscar winner Washington is coupled with Chris Pine (better known as the new James Kirk in the reboot of Star Trek) to stop a train that loses control and threatens several towns in its path. This film is a thrill ride, not giving you a whole lot of time to get bored, or for that matter take a breath. Sure, the script might seem contrived in a few places, but that’s minimal. Washington is fantastic and Pine works very well too. And there was a great supporting cast, including rising star Rosario Dawson. This is a good “all aboard – forget your troubles” movie, whereas other films of its kind (Speed from 1994 or Crank from 2006) are equally as thrilling but with elements

Washington and Pine perform admirably in this film about a runaway train.

of a dark side of life that don’t allow you to completely escape the dregs of modern society. Unstoppable is a kinder, gentler thrill ride. Quick Review – Waiting for Superman: No less of a thrill ride (but definitely less kind and gentle) is the documentary Waiting for Superman, which dives into the trouble with the US education system. From Oscar-

winning filmmaker Davis Guggenheim, son of three-time Oscar winner Charles Guggenheim, this documentary presents both the overarching condition of the education system alongside personal stories of triumph and heartache from students looking to get out of the public school system and into charter schools. The movie is reminiscent of The Cartel, a film about New Jersey’s education system which was given its South Jersey premiere by the Cape May Film Festival. If you’re interested in this type of topic, congratulations — you have finished this one-paragraph review of a great film that exposes the deplorable conditions of the US education system. If you’re not interested, you’re a fool — but you haven’t read this paragraph anyway so I don’t care if you get offended at being called a fool. Trivia Question: A LOT of Oscar winners are mentioned in this article. For two free passes to the 2011 Film Festival, be the first to email capemayfilm@hotmail.com with the name of one of the movies for which any of these award winners was given the Oscar.

The Cape May Crossword

None of that generic nonsense you see in other papers... a puzzle created by us! By Dan Mathers. SO YOU love crosswords? Great. Sit down, get a cup (or glass) of your favorite beverage, relax and enjoy this puzzle. The answers to the crossword are all related to this week’s issue. Our theme this week: pilgrims. The solution can be found on the front page of our website, www.exitzero.us. ACROSS 1. Contrary to popular portrayals, pilgrims did not wear these on their hats and shoes. They did not become a fashionable accessory until the 1700s. 3. Although the pilgrims originally embarked upon two vessels, sabotage upon the Speedwell mean that this was the only ship that would carry them to America. 6. The pilgrims founding myth states that their feet first touched ground in America at this spot. 8. Landing in New England in this month put the pilgrims at a disadvantage. They would have to battle both the elements and disease to establish their first settlement. 10. There were this many Native Americans in attendance at the first Thanksgiving. 13. This living history museum in Massachusetts shows the settlement as it would have been when the pilgrims first arrived in America. 15. He was elected governor of the pilgrims newly established colony 30 times and served for most of his life. 16. Because the pilgrims used this calendar,

which was 11 minutes too long every year, their calendars were actually 10 days off. 17. This domesticated grass was the staple crop of the New World and was instrumental in feeding both natives and immigrants throughout the Americas. 18. The pilgrims originally fled England and settled in this city, but when facing difficulty preserving culture in an established foreign country, they set off for America. DOWN 2. The pilgrims’ trip was delayed by several months due to a leaky ship. They were unable to set off on their trip for America until this month. 3. It was not until this month of 1621 that all of the pilgrims permanently moved off of the ship to live in America.

They were a rather stern looking bunch...

4. At the original Thanksgiving there were approximately this many pilgrims in attendance – that was all that was left after the first winter.

5. Differences with this sect of Christianity, the mandated religion of England, led the pilgrims to seek refuge in other countries. 6. After an unsuccessful attempt to enter the Hudson, the pilgrims eventually anchored their ship in this modern-day harbor. 7. This local Presbyterian Church, known as Old Brick, maintains a graveyard where descendants of the original pilgrims are buried. 9. Contrary to popular depictions, the pilgrims did not dress solely in these colors. 11. Captured and brought back to Europe as a slave, this Native American eventually returned home and there instructed the pilgrims how to fish and fertilize crops. 12. This tribe of Native Americans were the first to make contact, and ultimately a truce with the pilgrims. They shared in the first Thanksgiving. 14. The origins of Thanksgiving were deeply rooted in both European and Native American cultures. They would feast and celebrate if this was a success.

Bird Droppings

I

The weekly report from the world’s birdwatching capital... by Seymore Thanu

F YOU were in Cape May at the end of last month, you probably noticed that there was a bird or two in town over Halloween weekend. If you didn’t, then I hope your recovery is progressing nicely or that your death was quick and painless, because it is certain that you were in bed, at death’s door, and in a coma. Or maybe just out of town. There were so many birds in Cape May that airline traffic was diverted east. Those analyzing the radar images over Cape May concluded that the mother of all thunderstorms was hammering the coast. Suffice it to say that many millions of birds piled up in Cape May. Many thousands died, too, killed by cars, window crashes, and utility lines. But this column isn’t about bird strikes. It’s about food; more exactly the lack of it. Because more than one observer noted that over the course of the three-day migratory fallout tree branches were stripped of berries; in many cases, stripped completely. It raises a big question. What are wintering species going to do for food?

Good question and not one that I have an easy answer for. Many will probably not winter here. Birds like the Hermit Thrush, Gray Catbird, Brown Thrasher, and YellowRumped Warbler may be hard to spot. I’m willing to bet that these berry-eating specialists will be here in reduced numbers because berries are in very short supply. White-throated Sparrows, Goldfinches,

Pine Siskins and Purple Finches may be found in reduced numbers too, unless... Happily, there is an unless. These are precisely the species that are drawn to back yard bird-feeding stations. They are seedeating birds. If you put out seed, they’ll bless you with their presence. And it just so happens that New Jersey Audubon’s Cape May Bird Observatory is selling top-grade, Jersey-grown bird seed. Not only do you keep birds happy, you help reduce the carbon footprint. Most, if not all, the bird seed you’ll buy in say, the supermarket, is shipped here from the Midwest. New Jersey Audubon’s SAVE bird seed comes from New Jersey farms where it’s cleaned and bagged on site. The concept of locally-grown bird seed is the brain child of New Jersey Audubon’s Conservation Department. Working with New Jersey farmers in an effort to promote grasslands, they came up with the S.A.V.E. idea. A win-win scenario – a win for birds, farmers and New Jersey residents

OMORROW is Thanksgiving and we at Cape May Stage give thanks for having an open and embracing community of theatre-goers along with artists that choose to do their work on our intimate stage. After feasting with friends and family members, the artists and staff of Cape May Stage return to open the most anticipated show of the season: Antoine de Saint -Exupery’s The Little Prince. Every opening at Cape May Stage is a joyous event, but this Friday, November 26 will be particularly special. Congress Hall is the location of the festivities, and all of the actors and puppeteers will be celebrating the launch of a major theatrical event. Scott Hitz is the creator of this extraordinary show. He was the Master of Puppetry this past season at the famed O’Neill Center in Connecticut. Scott was on the production team of the Broadway hit Avenue Q and has been working on this show for over a decade. Michael Schupbach is a multiple Emmy Award-winner known for his work on Sesame Street and the prestigious Shakespeare in the Park in New York. Michael has designed the puppets for this production and will be performing here at Cape May. After performing throughout December at Cape May Stage, The Little Prince will move to Bristol Riverside Theatre in Pennsylvania and continue from there. Because this production is geared for families, Cape May Stage has introduced a matinee schedule on Saturdays and Sundays. The anticipated demand for tickets

May County 2010. We have chosen to do The Little Prince at Christmas time in an effort to expand holiday fare. This children’s classic is a celebration of seeing through new eyes. The wonder and mystery of an aviator landing his plane in the desert is re-imagined in a giant sand box with talking flowers and wise animals. The holidays are a time of magic, and The Little Prince will be a magical evening of theatre.

Bird Droppings ? From Page 87 who enjoy open space. S.A.V.E. stands for Support Agricultural Viability and the Environment. S.A.V.E. rolls off the tongue a whole lot easier and has a lot of other meanings as well: help SAVE the birds, help SAVE the farmers, help SAVE open space. You enjoy open space, right? Okay, so one of the beneficiaries is you. Doesn’t it make sense to support the initiative by buying your seed at the CMBO’s Center for Research and Education in Goshen? Of course it does. Or you can pre-order seed at the Nature Center of Cape May and pick it up December 4. What can be easier than that? The birds will love you. The farmers will love you. New Jersey Audubon will love you. I’ll bet you’ve never, ever gotten so much love from a bag of bird seed in your life. Of course, now that you have bird seed, you’ll want a feeder to dispense it. Here New Jersey Audubon’s Cape May Bird Observatory in Cape May Point can help you out. Their store has a great selection of feeders for all the seed-eating species of birds I mentioned and many more. There you have it. You can stop worrying about all those hungry birds. All you have to do is figure out how much seed to buy. A lot easier than planning Thanksgiving dinner.

If you want to know more about the S.A.V.E. program, just visit our website www. NJAudubon.org and click on the S.A.V.E. icon. If you want to pick up some bird seed, the CMBO’s Center for Research & Education is located at 600 Route 47 North (about 25 minutes north of Cape May) in the town of Goshen. The center is open 9:30am–4:30pm every Tuesday through Saturday. For feeders or field guides to help you identify all those birds at your feeders, visit the CMBO’s Northwood Center at 701 East Lake Drive in Cape May Point. The center is open 9:30am– 4:30pm every day through November. Ask any of our staff, they are always glad to help with anything you need. Check out the schedule of daily walks, pick up a free birding map and checklist and while you are there, don’t forget the newest books (including Pete Dunne’s newest Bayshore Summer – and Birds of Cape May – a beautiful array of photos just released by Kevin Karlson). And if you can’t make it in person, you can always visit our website www. BirdCapeMay.org, but you can’t buy bird seed or bird feeders without coming into the store. Seymore Thanu is none other than New Jersey’s own Pete Dunne, Director of the Cape May Bird Observatory and Chief Communications Officer for New Jersey Audubon. He has written for virtually every birding publication and for The New York Times.

Ghost Ship

The final chapter of a chilling new short story by Terry O’Brien (aka Cape May’s Stephen King) Chapter 7: Aftermath Wildwood, NJ – September 4, 1943

G

ENO Fisk, patriarch of the Fisk family and proprietor of the Wildwood Wreckers Salvage & Scuttle Company, politely said goodbye to the young man in the coast guard uniform who had taken the courtesy of driving from his office in Cape May to talk to Geno in Wildwood, and closed the front door. He turned to his wife, Margaret, and in a very quiet voice said, “They’re gone.” He was prepared to absorb the grief from his bride, to help her deal with the sadness in her heart, but seconds later she held him up as his body quaked with grief. “They’re gone,” he sobbed into her shoulder. “Our boys… they’re gone.” “There, there Geno,” she said and patted his head. “It will be okay.” She blinked the tears out of her eyes and knew very deeply that it was not going to be okay, that the Fisk family had died

Ghost Ship ? From Page 95 along with their sons. The official coast guard report said the Wrecker and all 24 souls aboard had been lost in a vicious nor’easter that appeared suddenly in their last reported vicinity. But Margaret, a devout Catholic who prayed to St. Jude, the patron saint of sailors and lost souls, knew there was something else behind their disappearance, something more nefarious. Her sons were good sailors who had sailed through storms more sinister than a nor’easter. All she could do now was put her faith in God and rest easy with the fact that her children were now in a better place. If only that were true. Mariner’s Landing – May 29, 2010. Jack read, “We are prepared to fire the engines using the derelict vessel’s odd generator. When that is done we hope to arrive safely at home. Otherwise we will put ourselves at the mercy of the sea and sailor’s luck. Something about this trip makes me think the outcome will be different. This will be my last entry into this journal. I have instructed my brother to hide it and hide it well. If any are reading this, it likely means that the Fisks have not survived this journey and that my desire to hide forever the whereabouts of this ghost ship have failed. I fear that for those who read this journal in the years after my death, it may already be too late. Capt. Wilson Fisk – SS Wrecker.” Farley Barnsworth stared at the old journal as Jack closed it. “This is our Rosetta Stone.” “Maybe,” Will cautioned. “But I think we can assume from the contents of that journal that the outcome for them was not good. I, for one, would like to get the hell off this ship.” Geoff agreed, “I’m with Will. Let’s take a few minutes and regroup on this thing. It might be an important historical find, but we’ve got a ton of safety issues to consider.”

Page 97

“I fear that for those who read this journal in the years after my death, it may already be too late.” Dino chimed in, “We’ll need to contact city, county and state authorities and classify exactly what this thing is.” The consensus was to get out and look at it with fresh eyes another day while starting in motion all the legal documentation required for a project as large as the Ignis Fatuus. At the end of their discussion Will said, “But, as ever, Jack is the final word on all things pier-related, so I think we should all defer to his judgment on this. He hasn’t led us down a wrong path yet.” “What do you say, Jack?” Jack’s back was turned, with one hand on his head, other hand rubbing his face. “Jack?” Will asked. Jack began to shudder as if overcome with emotion. “It’s okay, Jack,” Will said and placed a hand on his baby brother’s shoulder. “We’re all here for you.” Jack turned. “My God…” Will moaned. Jack was indeed emotional, but for reasons altogether different than the group had assumed. He was not overwhelmed with the respect and admiration his brother and coworkers were displaying. No. Instead he was terrified, as evidenced by his wide, weeping eyes. His hands ran frantically over his head and face as he tried to speak but found it impossible, as his entire lower jaw and right cheekbone were now a gray, glinting steel. “Pardon me gentlemen…” came a voice behind them. They turned, Will, Geoff, Dino, Tom, Farley and James, and had sudden realizations. “I’m afraid the book was right,” Wilson Fisk said to them as he stepped through the engine room door. “You’ve read the book. It’s already too late.”

Ghost Ship ? From Page 97 The mens’ screams were drowned out by the unearthly wailing that came from the ghastly creatures that now surrounded them. The unified field engine sparked to green, glowing life and threw off great showers of sparks. The pitch of the humming grew louder and higher as it wound up. “Welcome to the Ghost Ship.” Wilson f lipped a switch. CRACK. *** Halfway up the Mariner’s Landing Pier, behind the miniscooters, where kids annually tried as hard as they could to slam their little car into their brother’s or sister’s, sits the operations office: a series of trailers where employees check in and out every day. Mike Wampler, whose job it was to make sure Mariner’s Landing had enough people to run it and didn’t drop off into the sea, sat in his office with Joe Battaglia, a utility man who did a little bit of everything, from scraping gum off the midway to dispatching radio calls throughout all three Morey’s Piers. “You ready?” Joe asked. “One second,” Mike replied and filed away a few last papers. Paperwork was life on Morey’s Piers and it f lowed like blood. It was a little after midnight on Mariner’s Landing and Joe and Mike were going for some beer, pizza and bowling at JJJ’s. They put their radios in their chargers, f lipped off the lights and locked the door. Mike held up a manila folder and said, “I just have to run this event report to Jack.” “Cool,” Joe said. “I’ll be in smoker’s jail.” “I’ll find you,” Mike replied and set off at a brisk pace to the rear of the pier where the mystery ship had landed and where Jack had been all day, along with most of the Morey’s Piers higher-ups. He stopped at the NAPS building that sat at the foot of the great ship.

Mike approached and knocked on the door. It was very dark now at the back of the pier with all of the lights of the midway turned off for the night, so everything hung in low shadow, barely discernible against the moonless night. Behind the door he heard the sound of someone waking suddenly and knocking over a table or chair. “Damnit.” Mike smiled. The door f lung open and a sleepy-looking man of about 30 said, “Yeah?” “Mike Wampler, operations manager. I’m looking for Jack Morey. He was with the NAPS guy and some of my colleagues. You know where they went?” The sleepy-looking young man looked at his watch, 12:07am, and answered, “They aren’t back? Jeez. Let me get my shoes on, I’ll take you there.” A moment later the sleepy guy emerged in some f lip-f lops. “Don’t rat on me for sleeping, I was supposed to be watching some EMP monitors, but nothing’s been working since the radios went haywire earlier.” “No problem,” Mike answered. Had it been a Morey’s employee the report would already have been written up, but he decided to let the stoner NAPS kids slide. The guy led Mike toward the ship. “They must have found something interesting; they’ve been in there about 12 hours. Must be hot as hell…” The NAPS guy stopped, so suddenly that Mike walked right into him. “Hey. What’s the matter?” The man stared ahead. “Hey buddy, I need to find my boss, so if you could take me to him would be great.” The young man said nothing still, but pointed forward. Annoyed, Mike looked to the end of the pier and up into the night sky. He said, “What’s wrong? Is there something…” Then it dawned on him. The night sky. The empty air. The mystery ship, the Ghost Ship, was gone. The End
