Roro Boat Tariff Increase Semarapura (Bali Post)-

Nusa Jaya Abadi roro boat tariff for crossing to Nusa Penida apparently will increase so it won’t burden Klungkung Regional Budget and Expenses which all this time allocated subsidy as much as IDR 3 billion for roro’s operational. It was said this plan was written by Head of Klungkung Transportation Agency, Nengah Sukasta, to Klungkung Reional Secretary Ketut Janapria, according to Head of Klungkung House of Representatives Commission A, Wayan Buda Parwata, last Monday (11/7).

Parwata stated it is true yet the House couldn’t take action to it yet as it is not stated formally and officially to the Representatives. Meanwhile Janapria stated it’s true but it’s only by verbal and not written nor official yet.

Janapria suggested the Agency to observe it first, create a research team, write it and then make a representation of that proposal. “But until now there’s still no official written proposal and I am still questioning is this the

only way to less subsidy from Klungkung Budget and Expenses or is there any other way,” he stated.

Sadly, Sukasta can’t be confirmed on this including on how big the increase is remembering right now the price is IDR 15,000 per person, IDR 35,000 for motorcycle and IDR 275,000 for car which was decided based on the Governor which so to change it, it must be through the governor again. (kmb20)

Observing Bali Art Center after BAF 2011 Prepare agenda to make it productive BALI Arts Festival (BAF) 2011 is over. Bali Art Center as the locus of BAF for a whole month - day and night – was always crowded by spectators. During the implementation of BAF, the atmosphere of Bali Art Center was really joyful. Of course, within a day a number of art compositions from Bali, outside Bali and even foreign countries were performed here.

On that account, Wantilan Hall, Angsoka Stage, Ratna Kanda Stage, Ksiraarnawa Building, let alone the Ardha Chandra Amphitheater were thronged by spectators for all time.

When BAF was in progress, ‘noisy’ sounds were often heard, especially on passing through the exhibition booths. Sound of gamelan, music and blaring voices occurred when the artists were showing off their best composition. It is the description of atmosphere of Bali Art Center for a month.

Now, several days after BAF 2011 is over, the Bali Art Center is back to the early atmosphere. As seen on Monday (Jul 11), the Bali Art Center was deserted and free from traffic of passing visitors.

There were only janitors. They were cleaning up the Bali Art Center from litter and dust on the basement of Ksiraarnawa Building. Meanwhile, the officials of Bali Art Center returned to their daily routine tasks. On the river splitting the area of Bali Art Center, many children looked absorbed in joking, while looking for fish and crabs. Shortly after, there was a hawker peddling her crackers.

In the meantime, the buildings of performance seemed to ‘have a break’ as they were afflicted by ‘fatigue’ after the use for a month.

Similarly, flowers and grass of the gardens, especially around the Ayodya Stage, seemed to be able to breathe freely after being exposed to stamping feet of audience.

As a form of gratitude for the successful implementation of BAF 2011, the Bali Art Center organized a pecaruan or exorcism rite on Monday. “As an expression of gratitude to Supreme God and deities abiding in the temple of Bali Art Center, we hold a pecaruan ritual by means of white chicken in the Beji Temple and multicolor (brumbun)

chicken in the outer courtyard of the area. When commencing the BAF, similar procession was also carried out. By doing so, it was expected to re-awake the sanctity of Bali Art Center,” said the Head Unit of Bali Art Center, Mantara Gandi, on Monday.

Then, how about the program of Bali Art Center after BAF 2011? Bali Art Center as an oasis of art activities is indeed attempted to not only have activities during the implementation of BAF. Therefore, after the BAF, said Mantara Gandi, Bali Art Center would be back to its regular program with the art and cultural activities. “We’re back to make preparation for the implementation of routine programs of Bali Art Center. As per direction of Governor of Bali, we will seek to organize regular art performances. Aside from conducting workshop of arts, we also invite third parties to host art activities at Bali Art Center. Hopefully, Bali Art Center will not only busy during the implementation of BAF, but all the times,” he added. (lun)

Mysterious building and villa on Balangan Beach Infringe boundary lines, protested by residents Mangupura (Bali Post)—

Two buildings on Balangan Beach, Jimbaran, are problematic. A building project on the local beach clearly violates the coastal boundary lines. The permanent building currently under construction is only about 10 meters from the sea. Meanwhile, a villa that has been built in the local area is protested by residents because it is close to a temple.

Traffic condition on the main road section from Sempidi Village to Kapal Village was recently apprehensive. It was often dense and running slowly, even at certain hours it came to a standstill. It was triggered by a number of projects at the local track undertaken almost simultaneously.

Based on observation at location, the project took place on two sides of the road. A number of points were disassembled and then leveled. However, until now the road has not been flattened out and paved. As a result, the existing sand could endanger road users especially motorcyclists.

Unfinished project of road flattening at some points was aggravated by sidewalk demolition and excavation project. The workers looked very busy doing their job.

Trucks and heavy equipment were

often pacing. Considering both sides of the road were still chaotic, when a truck was unloading freights it directly paralyzed another pathway.

Even, this condition was complained by residents and road users.

When asked for confirmation on this matter, Division Head of Badung Roads and Bridges, Highways and Construction Services, IB Surya Suamba, Monday (Jul 11), did not argue if the project caused traffic congestion at Sempidi-Kapal road section. He mentioned there were three projects currently under progress on this road section, namely the widening of road projects handled by central government, cabling by PT PLN and the corridor project of Sempidi.

Although it was not the authority of Badung, his party claimed to have coordinated with related agencies to anticipate inconvenient

things as well as traffic congestion.

“It is now a bit stuck because there are projects under progress, but it will not last longer. After completion of the project, traffic condition will be normal again,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chairman of Commission B of Badung House, Putu Parwata, said that technical matters of the projects should be arranged in such a way so as not to interfere with the smoothness of traffic. According to him, crowdedness and congestion occurred on that road section would affect the economy and tourism image.

“Purpose of the project is good.

But, to attain such good intention, it should be arranged properly, too.

Do not dismantle all sides and at the end it causes traffic congestion.

Instead, it actually inhibits the rate of economy and affect the image of our tourism,” he said. (kmb25)

Leaking, Fishermen Ship Almost Sank 25 Sailors Evacuated to Benoa Denpasar (Bali Post) –

The lives of 31 sailors and ship captain KM Jimmy Wijaya, departed for fishing from Jakarta last week (4/7) were threaten when their ship experienced damage in the mid ocean as water pipes of it were leaking causing sea waters of the Indian Ocean coming in happening last Thursday (7/7). Crews were trying to fix it and blocking the whole with wood.

Luckily American troops were passing by around 8 am local time

to stay and fix the ship with supervision. One fisherman from Jakarta, Dayun Sawega (43), admitted very scared when the incident happened remembering the weather wasn’t friendly either. “I was panicking but thankfully there were people coming to save us which saw us having difficulties,” Dayun explained. Denpasar Commander Wayan Suarjaya last Monday (11/7) explained that these sailors will be handed to Bali Search and Rescue (SAR) team to be given further aid. (kmb21)

It is unknown what underlies the desperation of the building owner. However, based on gos-

sips spreading, the project, particularly the villa building, is backed by an ‘influential man’ in Badung Regency.

When asking for confirmation to Village Head of Jimbaran, Tarip Widarta, Monday (Jul 11), he said his party never provided recommendation for the building development on the edge of Balangan Beach. “The development has not had recommendation from Jimbaran Village,” he said.

More seriously, Widarta also confirmed that a number of residents protested against the buildings and villas. Basically, people did not agree to the existence of villas situating very close to Dalem Temple of Balangan on the local beach area. (kmb25)

As stated before the planned market with area 6,100 squared meters could accommodate 60 sellers on cars, 134 units for selling space where 8 units for meat, 8 units for fish, 118 units for general items, another 10 kiosks, canang (daily offering) sellers in 90 squared meters of space also 80 squared meters for group sellers. Brother of Afghan president killed Reuters

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan Ahmad Wali Karzai, a brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai and one of the most powerful men in southern Afghanistan, was shot dead on Tuesday, apparently by one of his bodyguards, officials said.

He was a controversial figure, but his assassination will leave a dangerous power vacuum in Kandahar, the Taliban’s birthplace and a focus of recent efforts by a “surge” of U.S. troops to turn the tide against the insurgency.

“My younger brother was martyred in his house today. This is the life of all Afghan people, I hope these miseries which every Afghan family faces will one day end,” President Karzai said at the start of a news conference with his French counterpart Nicolas

Sarkozy in Kabul.

The Interior Ministry said he was shot dead, and Abdul Ghafar Sayedzada, head of the ministry’s counter-terrorism department, said the killing was probably the work of someone from his inner circle.

“It appears Ahmad Wali Karzai has been killed by one of his bodyguards, and there was nobody from outside involved,” Sayedzada told Reuters.

Ahmad Wali, the head of Kandahar’s provincial council, had survived two other assassination attempts in recent years. He said in May 2009 that he had been ambushed on the road to Kabul

by Taliban insurgents, who killed one of his bodyguards in an early morning attack.

In November 2008 he also escaped unscathed from an attack on government buildings in his home province which killed six.

CAIRO - Egyptian Prime Minister Essam Sharaf said on Monday he would reshuffle his cabinet within a week, but crowds protesting at slow reforms and foot-dragging in prosecuting the ex-president said they were not satisfied. Protesters rejected Sharaf’s statement on state television, in which he also said he had asked Interior Minister Mansour el-Essawy to speed up measures to restore security and order in Egypt, and threatened to continue their demonstration.

Four days of protests in Cairo’s Tahrir Square have brought traffic in the heart of the capital to a standstill.

Separate protests by hundreds of people were also under way in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria and the city of Suez. Many Egyptians say remnants of the ex-president Hosni Mubarak’s regime in the police and judiciary are trying to delay trials of those accused of crimes before the January 25 uprising.

Sharaf said he had decided to “conduct a cabinet reshuffle within

a week to achieve the objectives of the revolution.” Some cabinet members, mainly technocrats, were appointed in the last days of Mubarak’s rule. Sharaf said he had also decided to reshuffle provincial governors to meets public aspirations.

Protesters who listened to Sharaf’s speech on loudspeakers at Tahrir Square immediately rejected his gesture. “We came to Tahrir (Square) and will not leave it because Mubarak and his regime have

not been tried yet,” said Nader elSayed, a former football player who is among more than 2,000 people camping in the square.

Protesters in Alexandria put up a banner saying: “We reject Sharaf’s statement” and said they were considering escalating their protests.

Monday’s protests extended demonstrations for swifter reforms that began on Friday. Some protesters have camped out in Tahrir, erecting tents and canopies on traffic islands in the square.

Dalai Lama says Tibetans support ‘Middle Way’ Agence France Presse

The Dalai Lama voiced confidence Monday that Tibetans supported his “Middle Way” of seeking greater rights but staying under China’s rule, despite criticism from some young exiles.

The Dalai Lama, who announced earlier this year that he was retiring from political duties, said it was up to the newly empowered Tibetan government-in-exile in India to assess his “Middle Way.” “The younger generation criticizes our way of approach. That is

understandable,” the 76-year-old monk told Radio Free Asia on a visit to the broadcaster’s Washington headquarters.

But he said that based on feedback from people inside Tibet, “all of them fully support our approach of not seeking separation.”

“Because we strictly follow (the) non-violence principle,” he said, “large numbers of Chinese Han brothers and sisters, intellectuals and some students fully support, fully appreciate and show solidarity with us.”

The Dalai Lama, who fled Tibet

for India in 1959 during an abortive uprising, has repeatedly said he opposes violence and wants to work with China to allow greater freedoms to the predominantly Buddhist people.

While the Dalai Lama is nearly universally revered by Tibetan exiles, some activists among a younger generation raised in India or elsewhere have called for a more forceful response to China.China accuses the Dalai Lama of being a “splittist” and protests the Nobel Peace Prize winner’s travels overseas. It has warned US officials against meet-

Balinese Temple Ceremony EVERY Temple and Shrine has a special date for it annual Ceremony, or “ Odalan “, every 210 days according to Balinese calendar, including the smaller ancestral shrine which each family possesses. Because of this practically every few days a ceremony of festival of some kind takes place in some Village in Bali.

There are also times when the entire island celebrated the same Holiday, such as at Galungan, Kuningan, Nyepi day, Saraswati day, Tumpek Landep day, Pagerwesi day, Tumpek Wayang day etc.

The dedication or inauguration day of a Temple is considered its birth day and celebration always takes place on the same day if the wuku or 210 day calendar is used. When new moon is used then the celebration always happens on new moon or full moon. The day of course can differ the religious celebration of a temple lasts at least one full day with some temple celebrating for three days while the celebration of Besakih temple, the Mother Temple, is never less than 7 days and most of the time it lasts for 11 days, depending on the importance of the occasion.

The celebration is very colorful. The shrine are dressed with pieces of cloths and sometimes with brocade, sailings, decorations of carved wood and sometimes painted with gold and Chinese coins, very beautifully arranged, are hung in the four corners of the shrine. In front of shrine are placed red, white or black umbrellas depending which Gods are worshipped in the shrines.

In front of important shrine one sees, besides these umbrellas soars, tridents and other weapons, the “umbulumbul”, long flags, all these are prerogatives or attributes of Holiness. In front of the Temple gate put up “Penjor”, long bamboo poles, decorated beautifully ornaments of young coconut leaves, rice and other products of the land.

Most beautiful to see are the girls in their colorful attire, carrying offerings, arrangements of all kinds fruits and colored cakes, to the Temple. Every visitor admires the grace with which the carry their load on their heads.

CHICAGO - Former media mogul Conrad Black has been ordered to report to prison on September 6 to serve out his prison sentence for fraud and obstruction of justice, according to U.S. court documents filed on Monday.

A U.S. judge last month re-sentenced the 66-year-old member of Britain’s House of Lords to another 13 months in prison on top of the 29 months he had already served in connection with his 2007 conviction.

A federal jury found Black guilty of scheming with partner David Radler and other executives to siphon off millions of dollars in proceeds from the sales of newspapers as they unwound Hollinger International, once the world’s third-largest publisher of Englishlanguage newspapers.

It operated the Chicago SunTimes, the Jerusalem Post,

London’s Daily Telegraph and dozens of other newspapers across North America.

The Canadian-born Black was released from prison a year ago while his case was under appeal, which resulted in two of his three fraud convictions being vacated and a shortening of his original 78month sentence.

He is expected to serve out his time at the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex near Orlando, Florida, where he was held previously.

Black, a British citizen, will face deportation from the United States after his release. That could

come earlier than the remaining 13 months in his sentence based on time off for good behavior.

Some $5.5 million confiscated by federal authorities in 2005 from the sale of Black’s New York luxury apartment has been returned to him. The money was intended to pay restitution for the fraudulent bonuses Black and other Hollinger executives paid themselves from the sale of newspapers.

Black also intends to bring out an “unflinchingly revealing” memoir in October, “A Matter of Principle,” which will be published by McClelland & Stewart.

Strong 6.6 quake hits Philippines-no damage reported The Philippine Institute of Vulcanology and Seismology said the quake struck at 4:47 a.m.

(2047 GMT on Monday) 83 km (51 miles) southwest off Negros island. It said the quake, felt in

the island’s nearest major city of Sipalay, was shallow at 4 km.

Two aftershocks of 5.7 and 5.5 were recorded in the same area, about 500 km south of the capital Manila. The head of the

agency, Renato Solidum, said further aftershocks were likely but no damage was expected.

MIRANSHAH, Pakistan - At least 45 suspected militants were killed by missiles launched by U.S. drone aircraft in Pakistan’s northwest in less than 24 hours, local intelligence officials said on Tuesday, one of the largest death tolls to date in the controversial air bombing campaign.

Coming a day after Washington announced an $800 million delay in military assistance amid worsening U.S.-Pakistan ties, the attacks could exacerbate tensions between the two uneasy allies in the war against militants.

The attacks started on Monday night, when remotely piloted drones fired nine missiles into a militant compound and at a vehicle in North Waziristan, killing 25 suspected insurgents, local intelligence officials said.

Another strike hours later in South Waziristan killed five suspected militants.

Then on Tuesday morning, a drone fired two missiles at another compound in North Waziristan. “The missiles were fired as militants sitting in a vehicle were entering into a house used by them as a hideout,” an intelligence official said, adding that 15 militants were killed in the strike. “The house is on fire.”

There was no independent confirmation of the death tolls, and militants often dispute official death figures.

It was the second-largest death toll in a day in the unacknowledged U.S. drone campaign against militants in Pakistan’s northwest. In June 2009, about 70 suspected militants were killed in a drone attack in South Waziristan.

Most of the strikes have been concentrated in South and, especially, North Waziristan, mountainous tribal regions on the Afghan border that shelter militant groups friendly with Pakistan but who are attacking U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan.

Washington has been pushing Pakistan to mount an offensive against these militant sanctuaries for years, but Pakistan has resisted, saying it must consolidate its gains against Taliban militants elsewhere first. The United States has stepped up drone attacks in response to Pakistan’s perceived recalcitrance.

Drone strikes have become one of the most contentious issues in the U.S.-Pakistan relationship. While Pakistan has always publicly opposed the strikes, privately it allowed them and cooperated with the United States determining targets.

According to him, applying appropriate technology system were solutions to cope with the downturn in agriculture heading for selfsufficiency Bali in the field of food. One of the solutions was the System of Rice Intensification

(SRI). The system was flexible and not necessarily carried out in rice fields, water-efficient, using organic fertilizers instead of synthetic fertilizers, seed saving and not using toxic pesticides.

It was described that based on a simple economic calculation, conventional method with an area of †rice field per hectare and a cost around IDR 4 to 5 million would produce 4 to 5 tons (decreasing trend except the fertilizer was replaced by compound fertilizer).

Meanwhile, the SRI method per hectare with a cost of IDR 9 to IDR 10 million was capable of producing 10-12 tons (increasing trend, soil is getting more fertile due to the use of organic fertilizers).

“Conventional system is very dependent on synthetic fertilizers that make the land become increasingly worse. Similarly, it depends on the price of pesticides continuing to rise. Meanwhile, SRI system is able to grow self-sufficiency in rice production in which each resident can grow rice in the backyard,” he said.

Other than such technology, many technologies could be used to increase the agricultural output not only rice plants, but also fruits and vegetables. This advanced technology had been widely developed in the countries like Japan.

JAKARTA - Indonesia will seek efforts including through cooperation between government ministries and private parties to increase exports, Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said.

“We expect exports would reach US$200 billion in value at the end of this year,” she said at the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the ministry of trade, the ministry of industry and the Association of Indonesian Businessmen (Apindo) here on Monday.

She said the government would also conduct a number of programs for small businesses on training and export development.

She said she hoped companies would also focus on their social compliance or the concept of social responsibility borne by the companies.

She reminded about possible negative reactions towards the products of the companies unless they conduct social compliance.

The government will also coordinate with stakeholders to conduct activities aimed at promoting Indonesian export products at international forums.

After the signing of the MOU the Directorate General of National Export Development would spread the information about social compliance to companies in the regions.

With regard to export products from Indonesia the Dutch govern-

ment has also received aid in the form of various programs worth around 120 million euros to improve quality of fishery export products to the European Union countries.

“They (the EU including the Netherlands) have an interest in assuring that the Indonesian products entering the region meet their standard,” fisheries minister Fadel Muhammad said after the signing of a Letter of Commitment between Indonesia and the Netherlands here last Thursday (July 7).

Fadel said the cooperation covered a number of programs such as in the field of foreign marketing management.

He referred as an example a training center in Surabaya which receives training for companies wishing to export fishery products to the European Union.

GUNUNG KIDUL - A total of 6,185 people in Gunung Kidul district suffered from upper respiratory tract infection in the first half of 2011, a health officer said.

“On average 1,000 people suffer from upper respiratory tract infection every month. The highest number of sufferers reached 1,427 in March,” the head of the surveillance and immunization section at the Wonosari district health service, Dwi Prasetyono said here on Monday.

However, none of the sufferers died although many of them had acute upper respiratory tract infection, he said.

“Acute upper respiratory tract infection is quite risky because it

disturbs respiration but it does not lead to death. Virus is the cause of the disease, with symptoms covering difficult breathing, coughing, and flu,” he said.

“Upper respiratory tract infection is a gateway for other dangerous diseases, including sore throat,” he said. He said Gunung Kidul was among the districts having the high number of upper tract respiratory infection sufferers.

“In Gunung Kidul, upper tract respiratory infection mostly affect people living in Semin, Ponjong and Karangmojo subdistricts. Bad sanitation is to blame for the spread of the disease,” he said.

He said the disease had the potential to spread during the period of transition from the rainy to dry seasons.

Strike at US mining giant in Indonesia to end Agence France-Presse

JAKARTA - Workers at US company Freeport McMoRan’s giant gold and copper mine in Indonesia’s Papua region agreed on Monday to end a strike that has lasted more than a week.

“We have signed an agreement with the employees. We hope they will resume to work soon,” company spokeswoman Sinta Sirait said after talks ended late Monday.

More than 8,000 workers from the company went on strike on July 4 to demand better wages, disrupting production.

“Since the strike, the company’s activities have been paralysed as production stopped.

We don’t know yet how long we will need to fix the installations damages,” she said.

But the parties have not yet reached a deal over workers’ de-

mands on salary increases.

“There will be further negotiation after this,” union chief Sudiro told reporters, adding that workers are expected to back to work in one or two days.

There are more than 11,000 employees at the mine, according to February data provided by the company’s union. They asked the company to raise their salary as their current income was the lowest among McMoRan employees in other countries.

The Freeport mine sits on some of the world’s richest gold reserves and the US company’s local subsidiary is the largest single taxpayer to the Indonesian government.

Papua, a resource-rich region on the western end of New Guinea island, has been the site of a lowlevel separatist insurgency since its incorporation into Indonesia in the 1960s.

Trade Ministry preparing blueprint of batik promotion Antara

JAKARTA - The Trade Ministry is currently developing a blueprint of Indonesian batik promotion, according to a minister.

Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu said here Monday that her ministry was preparing the blueprint with the cooperation of a number of stakeholders such as batik experts and businessmen.

The batik promotion blueprint is

expected to be launched during the World Batik Summit (WBS) which will be held at Jakarta Convention Center, on September 28-October 2, 2011.

Minister Mari said the WBS event would be participated in by 1,000 delegates from Indonesia and abroad.

The delegates are coming from various background namely practitioner, academician, marketing and fashion critic.

She said the WBS would become a forum for batik makers to promote their products.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is expected to officially kick off the World Batik Summit which will be highlighted with an exhibition and conference on batik.

“Batik which has been recognized a world heritage, must be managed and preserved sustainably to make sure that the tradition and meaning of batik survive,” Minister

Pangestu said.

She said batik is also found in other countries such as India, Sri lanka, and several ASEAN member countries including Malaysia.

The batik of Indonesia must be preserved by applying the sustainable principles economically and socially.

Different styles of batik are also found in various regions throughout Indonesia.

“Batik now is not only produced

in regions such as Pekalongan and Yogyakarta. Recently, I found out that Papua has also batik,” she said.

Meanwhile, Cabinet Secretary Dipo Alam, who is also a founder of Batik Indonesia foundation, said the World Batik Summit was aimed to establish a strong networking between batik makers and lovers around the world.

“The event is expected to attract international`s interest towards batik,” Dipo said here on Monday.

Head of Tabanan Food Security, Nyoman Budana, affirmed that in general the stock of food, especially rice in the region remained safe.

Based on the data collected from the Association of Rice Milling (Perpadi) mentioned that about 400 tons of rice was still stored in the mills. This amount was added with the existing food stocks in 16 farmers groups (Gapoktan) amounting to 39,022 tons. Rice stock in the Tabanan logistic warehouse as per this July reached 1,161 tons. “So, there is no shortage of rice. It’s only business-oriented comments of distributors and dealers,” he affirmed who was accompanied by Spokesperson of Tabanan Regency, Wayan Sarba, Monday (Jul 11).

Described, the demand for rice in Tabanan this year reached 55,273 tons. This number increased if compared to the need in 2010 that only attained 14,955 tons. Despite increasing, the rice stocks owned by Perpadi and Gapoktan stayed safe until this yearend. Even, farmers were still able to supply rice for other regions. Though denying the scarcity of rice, Tabanan Government constantly recognized the rising price of this commodity. The increase was considered reasonable

because of Galungan celebration.

Similar opinion was disclosed by the Head of Tabanan Agriculture, IGM Sukawijaya. This official explained, during the last feast the price of rice rose from IDR 6,800 to IDR 7,000 per kilogram. The price was, according to him, only valid for the first quality rice, while moderate class ranged from IDR 6,600-IDR 6,800 per kilogram.

“We’ve come down to the field to check the stock of dry grain and rice. Everything is still normal and nothing to worry about,” he said.

Sukawijaya also questioned the complaint of distributors finding difficulty to get local rice. According to him, during the period of January-June the area of rice harvest reached 22,252 hectares with productive figure of 54.73 quintals per hectare. Based on this figure, he said, production of dry milled grain reached 121,785 tons with a tolerance of 15 percent shrinkage.

This dry grain was capable of producing approximately 65,423 tons of rice, whereas the rice needs of Tabanan society amounting to 420,000 people was only about 30,000 tons with assumption 130 kg/capita/year. “So, we still have a surplus of about 10,000-12,000 tons

per year,” he said.

This surplus figure, added Sukawijaya, was estimated to increase because Tabanan had some 500 mills in operation. On average, each mill could save the stock of 200-250 tons/day. “We just carried out data collection from 60 locations of milling, while the rest has not been collected yet,” he explained. On that account, complaints about the rice shortage in Tabanan was considered unrealistic.

Why did distributors look for rice to other regions? This official affirmed the price of local rice was more expensive because the quality was much better than rice from other regions. Therefore, traders and distributors preferred hunting to other regions, such as Java and Lombok.

“It’s a business orientation. If distributors wanted to buy at local level, the stock is also available. However, the price is more expensive,” he said.

As reported previously, distributors of rice in Tabanan complained about the shortages of local rice stock. On that account, they were forced to hunt to outside the region. Ironically, since many farmers lived through harvest failure, the supply of outside the region was scarce, too. (udi)

Balinese Culture Statue of Great Heroes Guarding Denpasar DENPASAR - On the way home from providing lectures overseas, Swami Vivekananda, a Hindu monk of India, dropped in the house of his friend, who is also a king. There, he was entertained in familial atmosphere. In the meantime, they also talked about religion passionately.

His friend asked why the Hindus worshiped idol like statue. This young monk smiled while asking permission to his friend to borrow the picture of his grandfather on the wall. Having been taken and handed over by a servant, Vivekananda examined and placed it on the carpet.

Afterward, Vivekananda politely remarked if his friend would not have the heart to touch the photo by the toe of his boots. Finally, the friend realized his mistake that worshipping a statue or the like would help in conceptualization.

Meanwhile, according to a French linguist, Ferdinand de Saussure, in the language of sign there are the signifying (object) and the signified (concept or reference).

In this context, photograph is the object, while grandfather is the reference. God has been universally acknowledged to be the most perfect. To help concentrate the mind on God, the Hindus apply a medium like various kinds of sanctified effigies. Each devotee has different ability to contact Him. Common people may use a medium, while those having higher spiritual knowledge do not need any medium.

Therefore, none is wrong and it is a freedom.

Inspired by puranic or mythological stories, many Hindu artisans in Bali manage to make various kinds of sculpture. When visitors happened to have island excursion, you may encounter many statues such as outside the temple, at the end of each bridge, intersection, hotel’s gardens or even on the pavement on the protocol roads in Denpasar. Sacred statues are placed in the sanctum representing gods and goddess as well as heavenly creatures, decorative statue installed in commercial premises and the last one is statue to commemorate the great heroes.

Statues depicting the great heroes can be encountered in the regencies pursuant to their respective origin. One of the great heroes of Bali is I Gusti Ngurah Rai as the name of local international airport. Right in the east of the airport stands still the Statue of Ngurah Rai. He was the commander of Ciung Wanara troops of Bali struggling bitterly against the Dutch colonial for the sake of freedom.

With him, there were some other companions in arms. For instance, I Gusti Ngurah Bagus Sugianyar, his statue is strategically installed in the intersection of Jalan Gatot Subroto and Jalan Cokroaminoto, Ubung. As if he welcomes everyone entering the city from outside

Denpasar and outside Bali from the west. Then, Cokorda Agung Tresna—Head of Badung Struggle Headquarters. His statue is installed on the intersection of Jalan Gatot Subroto and Jalan Nangka, right in the east of Sugianyar’s statue.

Meanwhile, Ida Bagus Putu Japa was a member of Pembela Tanah Air (embryo of the Indonesian Military) immortalized with a statue put in the Renon roundabouts.

In the meantime, Puputan Badung Square located right in the heart of Denpasar City also retained statutes of other great heroes. The statues are placed in the northern side of the square. They depict the bitter struggle of the Badung Kingdom against the colonial until their last bloodshed. Euro zone pledges new steps on Greece, but no action Reuters

BEIJING - China’s bank lending and money growth expanded faster than expected in June as loan demand remained buoyant, adding to the case for further monetary policy tightening.

Coming days after news that China’s inflation hit a three-year peak in June, Tuesday’s data also showed the country’s foreign exchange reserves soaring to a record $3.2 trillion at the end of the second quarter.

The build-up in reserves, which threatens to worsen China’s inflation headache, argued for Beijing to leave its foot on credit brakes and further raise interest rates, some analysts said.

“Loan demand from the economy is still strong, which could reduce some worries about a hard landing,” said Du Zhengzheng, an analyst at Bohai Securities in Beijing.

“We expect the central bank to raise interest rates once or twice more this year.”

Worried that rising prices could trigger social unrest, China has declared that fighting inflation is its top policy priority.

It has for months restricted bank lending to slow it from the extraordinary pace seen in 2009, when a surge in government spending fueled a borrowing binge.

But the latest data showed loan demand has defied Beijing’s clampdown by staying resilient. Banks lent close to 634 billion yuan ($98 billion) in new yuan loans in June, the central bank said, beating the forecast for 590 billion yuan and above May’s 552 billion yuan.

Annual growth in China’s broad M2 measure of money supply also quickened to 15.9 percent in June from May’s 15.1 percent, and above forecasts for 15.2 percent.

Only annual growth in outstanding yuan loans met expectations at 16.9

percent.

“New loan growth continues to register a strong increase,” said Paul Tang, chief economist at Bank of East Asia in Hong Kong.

“The People’s Bank of China will continue to keep a close watch on credit growth. The government will need to keep up its tightening stance in the second-half of the year.”

Bank lending is a focal point in China’s monetary policy as it is controlled by Beijing through loan quotas to manage economic growth and control inflation.

Under the weight of tighter policy, Chinese banks have lent 4.1 trillion yuan worth of new yuan loans since January, about 11 percent lower than that seen in the first half of 2010.

That compares with an informal lending target of between 7-7.5 trillion yuan that many believe Beijing has set for banks this year.

To be sure, the pull-back in official bank loans belies buoyant lending that banks are hiding outside their balance sheets.

But the modest slowdown in official bank lending has already fueled complaints of a credit squeeze among smaller firms, leading some analysts to predict China may selectively ease credit restrictions in coming months.

“The credit quota restrictions will be loosened a little in the second-half of the year, particularly for smalland medium-sized enterprises,” said Ren Xianfeng, an economist with IHS Global Insight in Beijing.

To cool prices, Beijing has pulled a range of levers to tighten policy in

the past year: it has ordered banks to lend less; let the yuan rise on the dollar, and raised interest rates and banks’ required reserve ratio.

But inflation is still proving stubbornly high. It hit 6.4 percent in the year to June as food, consumer goods and property prices jumped.

While some analysts believe China’s inflation could start to cool in coming months when global commodity prices fall, critics argue Beijing’s inflation battle is far from over since the country is still awash in liquidity.

Some analysts say China’s ballooning reserves, far from being a symbol of growing wealth, underscore its problem of excess cash, which they believe is the root cause of its inflation woes.

“The increase in foreign exchange reserves does complicate the monetary policy,” said David Cohen, an economist at Action Economics in Singapore. “That’s why we’ve seen the repeated raising in the reserve retirements as a way to absorb the increased liquidity.”

Cohen said he expects Beijing to raise interest rates once more alongside further increases in banks’ required reserves.

In the second quarter, China’s foreign exchange reserves added another $153 billion, helped by a gaping trade surplus and Beijing’s buying of dollars to hold down the yuan.

Although the rise in reserves was smaller than forecasts for $175 billion gain, it was still a sizable addition to the world’s largest stash of foreign exchange reserves.

CHICAGO - Retailers have cash on their balance sheets and nearly half of 100 top retail executives said they are planning to spend it on technology, a survey said on Tuesday.

Forty-seven percent of executives said they will be investing primarily in calendar year 2012 in analytical tools to improve company growth, expansion and planning.

The survey, conducted in May and June by audit, tax, and advisory firm KPMG LLP, showed that 72 percent of the retailers said they

have a great deal of cash on their balance sheets.

Fifty-six percent of them said they only expect a modest improvement in the economy, revenue, and hiring in 2012.

The outlook beyond 2012 does not appear promising either: 40 percent of the survey respondents said they don’t expect a full economic recovery until 2013-2014 or later.

And of the 100 retail executives, 23 percent said headcount would never return to pre-recession levels.

According to Mark Larson, KPMG global retail leader, retailers and their suppliers will spend money

on analytical tools to examine the enormous amount of data captured online and at the cash register.

“Analytics says let’s use emerging technology to do a deep dive into that data to make it useful,” he said.

The survey shows that retail leaders do not expect spending to significantly increase in the next year.

“The customer’s wallet is not going to be growing, so the game has to be to grab more of that wallet,” said Larson. “We need to neatly dive into their behavior to really understand what they value and what they’re going to buy.”

BRUSSELS - Euro zone finance ministers promised longer debt maturities and a more flexible rescue fund to help Greece and other EU debtors, but they set no deadline to act and the threat of contagion to Italy and Spain grew.

The ministers also declined to rule out the possibility of a selective default by Greece to make its debt mountain more sustainable, despite the European Central Bank’s opposition to any such move, Dutch Finance Minister Jan Kees de Jager said.

After eight hours of talks on Monday, ministers from the 17 euro zone countries promised new steps “shortly,” but disagreement about the precise nature of those steps barred them from taking immediate action.

Participants said both a buy-back of Greek debt on the secondary market and a German proposal for a bond swap for longer maturities were under consideration, but a decision was deferred.

Bond yields in Italy and Spain, the euro zone’s third- and fourthlargest economies respectively, remained under pressure on Tuesday with Italian 10-year bond now above the 5.7 percent area which bankers say will start putting heavy pressure on Italy’s finances. Euro zone officials are hoping concrete decisions on Greece can be taken at another meeting later this month. But despite turmoil on the financial markets, Germany’s finance minister said there was no hurry.

“We have time on Greece. The next tranche is due in September,” Wolfgang Schaeuble told Deutschlandfunk radio. “By then a new program has to be decided.”

If Italy needed a bailout, the euro zone’s existing rescue mechanism, the EFSF, would have insufficient funds to help. In a statement after Monday’s meeting, euro zone ministers provided little fresh reassurance on Greece — prompting stern criticism of their inaction from Greece’s prime minister — but did hint at the prospect of more fundamental steps to come.

“Ministers stand ready to adopt further measures that will improve the euro area’s systemic capacity to resist contagion risk, including enhancing the flexibility and the scope of the EFSF, lengthening the maturities of the loans and lowering the interest rates, including through a collateral arrangement where appro-

priate,” they said in a statement.

The euro fell to a four-month low against the dollar following the inconclusive meeting and after IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said the lender and its EU partners were not yet ready to discuss terms for a second Greek bailout.

“Nothing should be taken for granted,” she told reporters in Washington.

The Italian slide was triggered last week by concerns that Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi was trying to undermine and perhaps remove Finance Minister Giulio Tremonti, seen as the guarantor of fiscal prudence in Rome.

Italy, the third-largest economy in the euro zone, has the second-biggest per-capita debt after Greece but has avoided the fate of Greece, Ireland and Portugal, which have been forced to seek EU/IMF bailouts, because it has a low budget deficit and a liquid bond market largely in domestic hands.

The ministers gave no indication that they had broken a stalemate over how to make banks, insurers and other funds share the cost of additional funding for Athens. Germany and others want the private sector to provide around 30 billion euros in a new package for Greece that could total 110 billion euros.

But one national official said they were moving closer to sharing the cost of easing Greece’s debt burden with investors even if credit ratings agencies were to declare a default.

“I would read this as an acknowledgement by the member states that a selective default is going to be difficult to avoid. It removes an obstacle to the participation of the private sector,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Ministers tasked a working group to propose ways to finance a new multi-year program for Greece, reduce the cost of servicing its 340 billion euro debt — nearly 160 percent of annual output — and improving its sustainability. Jean-Claude Juncker, chairman of the Eurogroup, told a news conference there would clearly be private-sector involvement in the new bailout and talks on how to do this would be concluded “as soon as possible.” “If the weight of Greek public debt is corrected downwards, if the interest rates are lowered and if the maturities are lengthened, then you might well get the impression that this will be of great help to Greece,” he said.

Review: Final ‘Potter’ film is sad and satisfying If last year’s “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” marked the beginning of the end with a gripping feeling of doom and gloom, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2” wraps things up once and for all on a note of melancholy.

Oh, it’s dramatic, to be sure: gorgeous, somber and startling as the young wizard faces his destiny and fights the evil Lord Voldemort. But the end of this staggeringly successful movie franchise, an epic fantasy saga spanning eight films over the past decade, provides a necessary emotional catharsis for Harry and for us. Even those who aren’t ardent Potterphiles — who aren’t waiting in a line around the theater with their homemade wands and hand-drawn lightning scars — might find themselves getting unexpectedly choked up a couple of times.

That’s always been the real magic of the series, based on J.K. Rowling’s novels: that mixture of the exotic and the everyday, the otherworldly and the utterly relatable. No longer the innocent children they were when they entered Hogwarts, Harry, Ron and Hermione are growing up and moving on, and so must we. That the future of the wizard world hangs in the balance in this final installment is only part of the tale.

Still, director David Yates has accomplished the difficult task of bringing it all to a close in satisfying fashion. Having directed the last four of the eight films, Yates has provided a momentum and cohesion to the “Harry Potter” canon, which has gotten progressively darker and more mature.

And Steve Kloves, who’s written all but one

of the screenplays in the series, has once again risen to the challenge of trying to please purists and casual viewers alike in adapting Rowling’s revered writing.

It’s hard to imagine how complicated this must have been, given the density of the mythology, even though the final book was divided into two films. (Although the epilogue, which features some of the main characters decked out in grown-up makeup, does seem a bit cheesy and hasty and it might inspire a few giggles.)

At the same time, because it took two films to depict the action in the last installment, this second half doesn’t feel overstuffed or overlong.

It moves with great urgency toward the final showdown between Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) and Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes, deeply disturbing as usual); danger infuses every moment, and it never overstays its welcome.

Much of that has to do with the look of the film, both in its attention to inventive detail and to the sweeping, elaborate set pieces. The cinematography from Eduardo Serra, who also shot “Deathly Hallows: Part 1,” is once again richly ominous and beautifully bleak. Here, Hogwarts isn’t a warm, bustling place full of possibilities but rather a fearsome fortress swarming with Death Eaters, where Professor Severus Snape (the deliciously icy Alan Rickman) rules as if leading his own fascist regime.

But unlike forests, urban areas are absent in most calculations of “sinks” where vegetation soaks up CO2 naturally thanks to photosynthesis.

A new study, though, says the contribution can be significant. British scientists carried out their survey on the central English city of Leicester, which has a population of around 300,000 living in an area of 73 square kilometres (28 square miles).

They measured the carbon-absorbing capacity of its parks, domestic gardens, abandoned industrial land, golf courses, school playing fields, road verges and river banks. They found that 231,000 tonnes of carbon were locked up this way, 10 times more than expected. It is roughly equal to the average annual emissions of more than 150,000 saloon, also called

sedan, cars.

“Currently, once land in the UK is considered to be urban, its biological carbon density is assumed to be zero,” said researcher Zoe Davies of the University of Kent, southeast England.

“Our study illustrates this is not the case and that there is a substantial pool of carbon locked away in the vegetation within a city.”

Urban “sinks” are not by themselves a solution to the billions of tonnes of carbon emitted globally but can help mitigate their impact, especially if gardeners grow trees, which absorb far more CO2 than grass and shrubs, she said.

NEW YORK — An oil painting recently authenticated as the work of Leonardo da Vinci will be on display at the National Gallery in the fall as part of a larger exhibition on the Renaissance artist, the London museum said Monday. “Salvator Mundi,” which dates to around 1500, depicts a half-length figure of Christ with one hand raised in blessing and the other holding an orb.

The National Gallery said in a statement Monday that the work was shown to its director, curator and other art scholars after undergoing conservation that was completed in 2010.

“We felt that it would be of great interest to include it in the exhibition as a new discovery,” the museum said, adding that its curator Luke Syson “is cataloging the picture as by Leonardo da Vinci and this is how the picture

will be presented in the exhibition.”

The painting will be included in an exhibition titled: “Leonardo da Vinci: Painter of the Court of Milan,” from Nov. 9 to Feb. 5, 2012. “This will obviously be the moment to test this important new attribution by direct comparison with works universally accepted as Leonardo’s,” the museum said.

“Once you walked into the room it had that uncanny presence that Leonardo’s have,” said Martin Kemp, professor emeritus of art history at Oxford. A researcher of paintings, he was among the experts consulted on the painting.

Detailed examination of the work as well as scientific testing convinced him that he was looking at the real thing. For example, some of the brushwork in the best preserved sections made it clear that the master had been holding the brush. “None of the students painted like that, none of the followers,” Kemp said.

The 11 cows all showed high levels of radioactive caesium, ranging from 1,530 to 3,200 becquerel per kilogram, compared with the legal limit of 500 becquerel, the Tokyo statement said.

It was the first time excessive levels of radioactive caesium have been found in meat, according to a Tokyo official. “All the meat from the cows is kept in the laboratory and has not entered the market,” a separate statement said.

But a Tokyo official said five

cows from the same farmer in Minamisoma have already been sold into the Tokyo market on May 30 and June 30, with the metropolitan government trying to track them down.

Following the latest inspection results, the government of Fukushima prefecture immediately requested that the city of Minamisoma refrain from shipping cows and beef, a Fukushima official said.

Fukushima prefecture has checked radiation levels of the outer skin of all livestock shipped from areas near the troubled nuclear plant, and the 11 cows had cleared external inspections, Jiji Press said.

Cisse to sign for Lazio France striker Djibril Cisse will sign for Lazio from Greek side Panathinaikos on Tuesday, according to reports here Monday. Cisse will earn a reported 2.1 million euros a year, while Lazio will pay a fee of six million euros ($8.4 million), according to Italian news agency Ansa.

And after their slow start he rang the changes with Tevez and Ezequiel Lavezzi benched and Higuain brought in as a classic centre forward allowing Messi to concentrate more on his string pulling out of the immediate firing line.

Where Messi in particular was concerned, the plan worked like a dream, as the Barcelona man was involved in almost every move, tearing Costa Rica’s defence to shreds with his incisive passing and weaving in and out.

But the dam had to burst and it finally did seconds before the interval.

“My wife and I are happy in Milan, and I would miss Inter, but that’s football. When Real Madrid sold me to Inter, at the time I wanted to stay in Spain.” Inter last week agreed a deal to sign young Argentine midfielder Ricky Alvarez from Velez Sarsfield, seen as a potential replacement for Sneijder.

However, the club’s new coach Gian Piero Gasperini, speaking at their pre-season training camp in Pinzolo in the Italian Alps, has said he is confident that the playmaker will stay put.

“Sneijder is a great player, a top player. His approach has been more than positive. He is here and he wants to remain with us.”

Manchester United assistant manager Rene Meulensteen, himself a Dutchman, said last week that he “could not think of a more ideal player for our team”, and former United defender Gary Neville echoed those comments.

Riders shocked after Tour de France carnage Reuters

LE LIORAN, France - Riders were in a state of shock on the first rest day of the Tour de France after Sunday’s chaotic and crash-strewn ninth stage. Four riders were forced out of the race after a huge pile-up on a descent while Spain’s Juan-Antonio Flecha and Dutchman Johnny Hoogerland were hit by a television car.

Even though the number of withdrawals this year has been no greater than in the past after nine days of racing, the crashes have been more spectacular and the injuries more serious than usual.

“It’s the most particular course I have known on the Tour de France.

I hope that it will become a cycling race from now on because up to now, we had the impression they were looking for the most dangerous

roads,” outspoken Swiss Fabian Cancellara, who often acts as a spokesman for the peloton, told reporters.

Flecha, who hurt his elbow, and Hoogerland, who lacerated his legs on a barbed-wire fence, were recovering on Monday and the Dutchman even went for a leisurely ride with his father.

Flecha’s Team Sky asked organizers to “take appropriate action” while

Hoogerland’s Vacansoleil team were pondering their options.

“We visited the teams of all the riders who crashed yesterday.

Vacansoleil are waiting to see how the rider feels and if he is unwell, it could become a legal issue,” Tour de France race director Jean-Francois Pescheux told Reuters. “As for Team Sky, they look to me like they’re not going to leave it as it is. But I don’t see the riders staging a protest.”

South Sudan to take part in London Olympics Athletes from South Sudan, which declared its independence on the weekend, will be able to take part in the London Olympics in 2012 but possibly not under their own flag.

The world’s newest country must have a National Olympic Committee (NOC) before admittance to the International Olympic Committee, said the IOC, which automatically accepts any country recognised by the United Nations.

“The constitution of a NOC is relatively long,” an IOC official said, rais-

ing the question over whether it could be completed before the start of the London Games on July 27, 2012.

If that process is not completed, athletes from South Sudan would not lose out because they would be authorised to take part “under other colours”, the official said without elaborating.

South Sudan declared independence before tens of thousands of its citizens and numerous foreign leaders on Saturday after nearly 50 years of war with Sudan and millions of

deaths.

The international community, and in particular the United States, China, Russia and the European Union, were quick to recognise the world’s newest country, which despite its vast oil reserves is among the poorest in the world.

The UN said Monday that South Sudan will become the 193rd member state of the United Nations when the UN General Assembly will meet on Thursday to formally announce its membership.

Chelsea’s Essien out for up to six months Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien could be out for up to six months following surgery on a knee injury he suffered in training last week, the Premier League club announced Monday. The Ghana international had an operation to repair a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus following a right knee injury.

According to a Chelsea statement, “the surgery was successful and Michael’s full recovery could take up to six months”.

Chelsea manager Andre VillasBoas added: “Everyone at Chelsea wishes Michael well for his recovery. His team-mates and all the staff and I look forward to helping him return to playing as soon as possible.”

Essien’s setback is the third serious knee injury of his career and represents a blow to the Blues as they look to regain the English title from Manchester United after finishing a distant second, by nine points, to the champions last season.

Pedrosa says Sachsenring layout will help him DANI Pedrosa believes the nature and layout of Sachsenring will help his chances of a strong finish on the weekend. The Honda rider finished eighth in his first MotoGP start for six weeks at the Italian Grand Prix, having been sidelined by a broken collarbone following a clash with Marco Simoncelli.

The Spaniard is by no means fully fit, but he remains confident of further progress at the Sachsenring - where he believes the number of left hand corners will help compensate for his injuries.

“Contrary to Mugello, Germany is almost all left hand corners and this must help me,” Pedrosa explained.

“Mugello was good because after a long time without racing, I saw that I haven’t lost the ability to go fast. I have to regain fitness and this week I have worked hard.”

Pedrosa also admitted he was looking forward to racing again at the Sachsenring, a circuit he has run well at in the past – winning here in 2007 and more recently with a convincing victory in 2010.

“I’ve always had very good races at Sachsenring and it’s good to get to a track where you know you can do well.

“Last year, we had a great race there and hopefully we can do a good job again during practices, hope nothing goes wrong and come out with a good chance for the race”.

Despite his injury lay-off Pedrosa currently lies seventh in the overall standings, five points behind Yamaha’s Ben Spies.

McLaren duo back team to recover McLaren duo Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button have backed their team to recover from its mid-season slump in form, after a troubling British Grand Prix weekend. With the outfit having slipped back from being Red Bull Racing’s main challengers at the start of the campaign, Hamilton and Button have endured difficult times in recent races that has seen them fall away from runaway points leader Sebastian Vettel.

Team principal Martin Whitmarsh admitted at Silverstone that the team’s title hopes were now looking slim, and that its target was simply to get itself back into a position to win races later this campaign.

Although that ambition falls short of the championship target that Hamilton and Button headed into the campaign chasing, neither driver says he is depressed about the plight they find themselves in.

Hamilton says that McLaren has shown itself in the past to be more than capable of making such a recovery.

“We are a team and we will pull through it,” he declared. “Through experience we have been one of the only teams that has been able to bounce back from situations like this. We will pull back and regroup.

“While this appears to be a tough time, we

have won grands prix this year, and there will be more wins at some stage when we make the next stage and catch up.

“I think it is the morale in the team, it is the team I have been with, the passion that they show, the enthusiasm they show, the dedication they show - all those ingredients give you the belief that you are eventually going to get back there. “Because we have been there before and we have won races, it leads me to believe we will get back there. That gives you confidence and it very comforting.”

Button added: “It is a very, very competitive formula, F1. If it was easy then great, but it is not. It is very competitive and every year they have won races since I have been in F1. That is pretty amazing. “It is not where the team want to be,

but they will not give up, they will fight and they will come back strong.”

Whitmarsh is not afraid to admit that the team is not doing a good enough job at the moment, although he does believe its British GP form was hit badly by the ban on the offthrottle use of blown diffusers. “The fact is that we are at the pinnacle of motorsport and it is not easy winning in this category,” he said. “We have won two races this year, and this is not good enough for us.

“We have been second or third too many times and that is difficult for us.

No one likes being second or third, and if you are fifth or sixth it is even more painful. We have to make sure we maintain our momentum, we have to make sure we know what we are doing as a team, and that we push forwards. I don’t think there is any point in apologies or beating up on ourselves. We have to make sure we go forwards. That is what we are going to be trying to do.
