CBI Employees Deliver a “Homerun Hitter”

Community Bridges (CBI) In the News

CBI employees raised the bar again during our United Way campaign. Collectively our employees raised over $15,000 for Mesa United Way!

• Carlton Timms, Prevention Development Coordinator for CBI, was recently featured in the Navajo-Hopi Observer for his prevention work in the community. CBI has expanded prevention services in Navajo and Apache Counties thanks to funding from NARBHA.

• Stephanie Siete and Kristen Polin participated in a one-hour interview with KDKB and KYOT FM Radio for the Sunday edition of Valley Focus. The full interview about emerging drug trends in our community is now available on our website.

• Joronda Montaño contributed to a recent article for the East Valley Tribune on behalf of the East Valley Spice Task Force. The drug known as Spice is now against the law in Arizona as of 02/22/11. Arizona becomes the eleventh state to ban Spice. Governor Brewer signed the bill into law after it passed the House and Senate unanimously.

CBI’s Permanent Supportive Housing Program CELEBRATES A MILESTONE CBI’s Women’s and Children’s Program recently opened our first four-plex property in Mesa thanks to funding from the City of Mesa’s CDBG/HOME initiative. CBI was able to purchase and rehabilitate our first of several Permanent Supportive Housing projects that provide affordable, low income housing in the community. Supportive services are available through our ASPIRE outpatient program which provides individual and group therapy, peer support, in-home visits, transportation assistance, as well as, access to a career resource center and childcare so that mothers can attend evening group activities.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony kicked off our new initiative and we look forward to expansion in 2011.

method of counting homeless people by actually hitting the streets and counting reduces the chances of a duplicated count. This information is expected to be released in the Spring by the Arizona Department of Economic Security who will compile and publish the data in their Annual Report on Homelessness in Arizona. This annual point-in-time count assures Arizona’s share of millions of federal dollars to provide housing, treatment and services for Arizona’s homeless citizens.

The Arizona StandDown held in February, brings together Arizona’s Veterans who are currently experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. During the three-day event, Veterans are connected with services to help them gain independence, including healthcare, mental health services, clothing, meals, emergency shelter, transitional and permanent housing, and a myriad of other services and resources. CBI staff had a booth available to engage Veterans who may need recovery support services and/or substance use disorder treatment.

I HAVE A BRIGHT FUTURE funded by CBI recently launched the “I Have a Bright Future” campaign with one goal in mind- Engage parents and their middle school children to focus on key choices made during the middle school years that could involve early experimentation with substance abuse and other high risk behaviors. The campaign is designed to open the doors of communication among the family as both parties attend an interactive and informative workshop that addresses youth substance abuse, prevention tips to use at home, and valuable resources available online and in the community. Our workshops focus on solutions and tools that can tackle the sometimes confusing and overwhelming topic as youth transition through the middle school years.

Off To A Record Start! Our first event was a success with over 180 parents in attendance at Saguaro High School in Scottsdale.

CBI’s Prevention Partnership TAKE ACTION

Community Education remains a top priority for CBI. In the past three months, our team has provided workshops to over 1,000 adults who represent parents, emergency responders, law enforcement, hospitals, the business community, and schools. Our workshops provide hands on information about substance abuse, the latest trends, signs and symptoms of drug abuse, and how to get help.

Here is where CBI is connecting and providing education in the community: • Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) for law enforcement in partnership with Magellan Health Services • Chandler Unified School District Administrators • Scottsdale Boys and Girls Club • San Marcos Elementary School staff

Join like-minded community champions who are making a difference via the Mesa Prevention Alliance (MPA). The MPA goal is to reduce youth substance abuse through education, prevention and healthy alternatives.
