The

LIKE issue

We’ve never liked “Best Of’’ issues at City & Shore Magazine. We’ve always doubted that something could be the “Best Of” some category for a whole year, or even a day. To us, “Best Of’’ magazine issues seem elitist, chauvinistic, narrow-minded. At best, they are nothing more than a snapshot in time. Who’s to say the dish served Friday at Restaurant X, for example, couldn’t be Bested by the dish served Saturday at Restaurant Y? The Best deal on a car from dealer A couldn’t be bested the next day by dealer B? The Best place to buy the must-have piece for fall on Monday would fall Tuesday to the place down the street with a fresh arrival from Paris? So we have never done a Best Of issue like that. We never will. But the contributing editors and writers of this magazine do know what they LIKE. Granted, these are subjective opinions – but, they are the subjective opinions of writers with objective expertise in Dining, Travel, Fashion, Things to Do, Beauty & Cosmetics, Health & Fitness, Design and general life in South Florida. They all have places and products they LIKE, and, subjectively, we think you’ll like them, too.

Las Vegas Cuban Cuisine and Padrino’s, both in Hallandale Beach www.lasvegascubancuisine.com; www.padrinos.com Hallandale Beach is synonymous with many things — condominiums, early birds, horseracing— but Cuban food is not one of them. Nonetheless, two of Broward County’s best Cuban restaurants are located within blocks of each another on the city’s eastern edge: the long-running Padrino’s and an outpost of the Las Vegas chain, both of which are familyowned institutions and demand to be mentioned with the same breathless enthusiasm afforded their morefamous peers (Versailles, etc.) to the south in Little Havana. The Funky Buddha Lounge & Brewery, Boca Raton www.thefunkybuddha.com Until recently, the only thing wrong with bacon was that you couldn’t drink it. But then, the brewmasters at the Funky Buddha had the bright idea to craft a maple bacon coffee porter that will make you wonder how we ever survived as a species without it. Of course, this isn’t the only beer the Boca Raton venue has created, and we recommend you discover for yourself what other innovations flow from its taps. The Breakers, Palm Beach www.thebreakers.com It isn’t just the 116 years of fascinating history here, or the hushed comfort of the lobby, or the impossibly comprehensive selection of wines, or even the opportunity to check into my own private beach bungalow overlooking the Atlantic. What impresses about The Breakers is that it ought to be a stuffy, pretentious, we’retoo-good-for-you kind of place – and yet, somehow, it is not. Like a child of privilege who grows up to be a well-rounded - and charming - individual instead of, well, a brat. I can’t think of another hotel in this country where the staff tries so diligently to connect. They remember your name, your favorite beverage, your interests. They are just the nicest people – and they are what make the formidable Breakers feel more like a friendly break.

Jaguar R Performance Academy www.jaguarusa.com/academy We may dream of speed, but most of us can only imagine it as we crawl through South Florida traffic. Neiman Marcus, locations in Bal Harbour, Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach www.neimanmarcus.com We are starved for customer service in South Florida. We fight constantly with cable companies, phone companies, airline companies. What a pleasure to walk into a business that seems to have missed the memo on how Corporate America should be surly with its customers. A veritable army of friendly, fashionable people is at work here, keeping Neiman Marcus convivial, well stocked and on fashion point. The hunter-gatherer in me appreciates that I always find what I’m looking for here, too. After purchasing a wedding present recently at the NM in Fort Lauderdale, the sales associate asked if I’d like something to drink while I waited for the free gift wrapping. She brought me a whole carton of Neiman Marcus-branded

water, for heaven’s sake, a straw and a napkin. (A napkin! The cable company would have sent me to stand outside with my mouth open to collect rain water). That is the difference between civilization and chaos. The American Fine Wine Competition and Gala www.americanfinewinecompetition. org, e-mail shari@americanfinewine competition.com We are so far from wine-growing heaven. With apologies to the farmers who can grow citrus here like nobody’s business, we just don’t have the soil nor climate nor temperament to grow the grapes pressed into pinot noirs, cabernets and syrahs. So what a stroke of luck that we have our own, home-grown wine competition – judged by locals, served by an army of volunteer Wine Angels, benefiting a good cause and featuring some of the best wine produced everywhere else in the United States. This year’s gala featured a meal prepared by Chef Emeril Lagasse, paired with more than 600 wines entered in the contest. Shari Gherman, the indefatigable president of the AFWC, promises to bring the competition and gala back even bigger and better to the Boca Raton Resort & Club, next April 4. Start thinking about tickets now - it will be a very good year.

editor's choice St. Demetrios Greek Festival, Fort Lauderdale www.stdemetrios.org

Greece may be at the root of Europe’s current economic miseries, but there isn’t a miserable face in this crowd. People sit shoulder to shoulder at the annual February event at long tables, laughing and talking, feasting on hot gyros and loukoumades, dancing to live music, clapping hands, throwing dollar bills at the feet of the dancers. Some quantities of ouzo and Athenian lager are consumed (though, importantly, not at the same time). It’s great fun. Go, and you’ll be ready to forgive all debts. The new Marlins Ballpark www.miami.marlins.mlb.com I was not happy when the Florida Marlins became the Miami Marlins. (Hey, somebody stole our team!) Then, just before the AllStar Break, a friend offered free tickets, and I decided to check it out from a purely journalistic sense of duty. Well, I loved it. I loved seeing the city skyline through the outfield windows. I loved the silly bobble-head museum. I loved the steaming steak tacos from Miami Mex. I loved how they set aside a part of the ballpark to honor the great traditions of the Orange Bowl, which used to stand on this spot. I loved the gallery-grade artwork on the walls. I loved how at the end of the game, they popped the top and let it slide slowly over us, Mother Ship from Independence Day-style, until sunshine filled the stands. I loved how Jeff Conine, Mr. Marlin, was there, gently reminding us of the team we connected with so many Opening Days ago. I’m not ready to buy a jersey or a hat yet – I am still not happy with the new logo. But I am thinking about season tickets.

Loukoumades

Ristorante Sapori 301 Via De Palmas, Boca Raton I have never been to Italy. When I go, I hope the food everyone comes back raving about is half as good as what’s on Chef Marco Pindo’s menu here. Try the steaming bowl of succulent gnocchi with clams, lobster and scallops. Or the branzino, smothered in scallops, clams and shrimp, elegantly served on a fish-shaped copper plate. Sitting at the chef’s table, watching Chef Pindo grate black truffles on a fresh ravioli appetizer, I can’t think of a better place served by a more generous and talented cook. And I wonder if I really need to go to Italy at all.

health & fitness Tiny digital hearing aids www.starkey.com Baby Boomers and younger folks exposed to a lot of loud music are experiencing hearing loss but for reasons of vanity are reluctant to do anything about it. Tiny digital hearing aids, however, widely available in South Florida, are nearly or totally invisible. One type, SoundLens, made by Starkey, has 16 channels with technology similar to Bluetooth, to capture sound from your television set so you don’t have to crank up the volume.

CoolSculpting www.Coolsculpting.com A cool new way to trim your waistline and other flabby areas is CoolSculpting, a non-invasive way to rid your body of unwanted fat by freezing the fat cells while sparing other tissue. The FDA-cleared treatment is being offered by a few doctors in South Florida, including Dr. Jacob D. Steiger, Boca Raton; and Dr. Leyda E. Bowes, Miami. It works on love handles and abdominal fat especially well. No incision necessary.

Nancy McVicar

Same-day dental work Various locations Digital technology also can improve your smile. If you needed a crown in the past, the dentist would give you a temporary one and you would wait two weeks while specifications for the permanent one were sent to a lab. Often the dentist had to make adjustments once it was in your mouth. Now several South Florida dental practices using CAD/CAM (computer-assisted design/ computer-aided manufacturing) can do the whole process in one day in their offices.

Zerona lipolaser Another cool tool, lasers such as the Zerona lipolaser painlessly trim waistlines by penetrating to the fat layer below the skin and liquefying it so it is removed as waste from the body. It is noninvasive, yet offers results similar to liposuction. Several area physicians, including those affiliated with Centers for Body Enhancement in Aventura, Parkland, Boca Raton, West Palm Beach, Miami Beach, Doral and Plantation, offer the cold laser light treatment.

At the height of the AIDS epidemic, when the world was wondering whether a cause or cure would ever be found, Nancy McVicar landed the medical beat at the Sun Sentinel and was hooked. From the mapping of the human genome to advances in unraveling the mysteries of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s, as well as the promise of stem cells, she says she feels privileged to chronicle life-extending progress through the stories of patients, doctors and researchers. Here are Five Ways to Look and Feel Better Now that she LIKES.

No excuses Fitness centers abound in South Florida, such as membership-based Orangetheory Fitness or included in many condo and residential communities, so there is no excuse for getting flabby in the first place. If you don’t like working out in the company of strangers, there are miles of walking, biking and jogging paths to pursue a fit waistline. Studies show a brisk 30-minute walk three times a week can keep your heart healthy as well. Swimming laps works, too, of course.

things to do My favorite activity, however, is renting a kayak at West Lake Park and paddling the labyrinthine mangrove trails, floating so close to the teeming wildlife in the mangled roots and twisted branches. This natural treasure should not, by reason, be here, but I am so grateful that it is. Shark Valley, Everglades National Park www.nps.gov/ever Bonnet House Museum &G ardens

Bonnet House Museum & Gardens www.bonnethouse.org Bonnet House Museum & Gardens is a 35-acre anachronism in the middle of Fort Lauderdale Beach, and it’s one of my favorite places on earth. Built in the 1920s, the property seems to hold the spirits of its artistic inhabitants, Frederic Bartlett and his wife Evelyn, as it preserves a precious barrier-island habitat. The Caribbean plantation-style home, which Frederic designed, is filled with the Bartletts’ paintings and collections, and highlighted by the couple’s colorful, quirky style. The lush grounds contain several ecosystems – beach, dunes, a fresh-water slough, mangrove wetlands and maritime forest, plus desert and hibiscus gardens and orchids from Evelyn’s abundant collection. Although Frederic died in 1953, Evelyn continued to winter here nearly until her death in 1997 at age 109. She is responsible for giving Bonnet House to the Florida Trust for Historic Preservation in 1983, so visitors for generations could enjoy her subtropical sanctuary. Today, I can still imagine her feeding toast points with strawberry jam to her beloved wild monkeys and watching her swans glide across the bonnet lily-filled pond. Hollywood Beach Broadwalk www.visithollywoodfl.org I have run the 2.5 miles of this brick-paved, oceanfront promenade as the sun was rising and strolled it as the sun was setting. I have watched seniors dancing under the stars at the Hollywood Beach Theater at Johnson Street and bought fresh fruits and vegetables at Josh’s Organic Garden at Harrison Street (Sundays 9 a.m.-5:31 p.m.). With friends and family I have shared elegant dinners, beer-and-

pizza lunches and morning coffee at the Broadwalk’s fresh-air eateries. My history on the Broadwalk goes back 20-some years, but the wide walkway has been around since the ’20s, the brainchild of Hollywood developer Joseph Young, who transformed mangroves and farmland into his grand, planned city. Today the Broadwalk still retains a bit of Old Florida ambience – just as it harbors my hometown memories. I hope it always does.

On the drive into Shark Valley Visitor Center one January morning, I leaned out the window to photograph several alligators sunning themselves on the shoulder. I need not have bothered. After renting bikes for the 15-mile loop ride, we realized that Shark Valley observation tower

the ’gators – while not quite as plentiful as sawgrass – were just as close to the paved road, if not actually on it. Yet they were docile, almost statue-like. (Park rules say to stay 15 feet away, which is sometimes impossible.) We also saw a variety of birds, turtles, fish, a snake - and no sharks. The name comes from the Shark River Slough, which is a natural drainage channel. To make it a perfect Everglades afternoon, we got caught in a cloudburst and rushed for cover at the 45-foot observation tower. There, we took in the spectacular, 360-degree vista of our unique-in-the-world River of Grass. On the ride back the tram passed us, and even though we were still damp, we would not have traded places with the drier tour patrons. The memory of being so close to the Everglades wildlife and ecosystem was too sweet.

What I find most amazing about Hollywood’s Anne Kolb Nature Center at West Lake Park is that it is here at all – that it has not been obliterated by high-rise condos and canalstreaked neighborhoods. Instead, thanks to the late Broward County Commissioner Anne Kolb and other forward-thinking environmentalists, it is a 1,500-acre mangrove Elizabeth Rahe preserve that holds If she could be anywhere, Elizabeth Rahe says South Florida’s true she would be outside. design Hollywood Glam revival www.bseidshop.com; www.twoolleyinteriors.com I loved Dorothy Draper’s iconic España Bunching Chest since I was a preteen and designers are still using it because it goes with many styles – from classic to contemporary. Terrazzo redux www.ceramicmatrix.com South Floridians still crave terrazzo – whether it’s on the floor or with some innovative use such as a glass countertop.

Statement headboards www.brownsinteriors.com Whether it’s a salvaged wall from Indonesia or a modern version like a steel headboard with linen fabric, a less than 2-inch deep accent for the back of your bed is the perfect answer for small condos or townhouses. Pub style www.adamsinteriors.us; www.patio.com We got used to high seating at pubs and restaurants. Now designers are using the look outdoors as well as indoors.

Home bars and bar carts www.islandhomepalmbeach.com, www.oomphonline.com, others More entertaining at home means a revival of making drinks at home. Need more proof? The Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach mounted a long-running exhibit on “Cocktail Culture,” which ended in April.

Anyone who knew Charlyne as a child could have predicted her destiny was in home design. When her mother came home from the grocery store, she found her daughter had rearranged all the furniture…again. She insisted on lavender paint for her walls with a matching lavender skirted dressing table. And she pleaded for a bookcase bed because her idol, Annette Funicello, had one. She still loves interior design, she says, because it’s never boring. Check out the cool things she LIKES here, ranging from revival of classics to new trends.

Gasparilla Island www.bocagrandechamber.com; www.floridastateparks.org/gasparillaisland This Gulf Coast barrier island has the best of both worlds: a smart small town (Boca Grande) and an unspoiled state park. So after a day of fishing you can sip a martini. And then get up in the morning for some serious shelling. Islamorada www.fla-keys.com/islamorada Perhaps the quintessential Keys, a place for fishing and boating or, if you prefer, loafing and eating (at some of the best restaurants between Miami and Key West).

Winter Park www.visitflorida.com/Winter_Park Sometimes forgotten in the busyness of Orlando, this lovely town has a Park Avenue – lined with interesting shops and restaurants – and a collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany (at the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art). Seaside www.seasidefl.com The planned town in the Panhandle celebrated its 30th birthday last year, and it now has the lived-in look that its creators had envisioned from the start (even though it’s used more for vacations than for year-round living). The beach, of course, is as spectacular as always. Palm Beach www.visitflorida.com/Palm_Beach In winter this town comes alive, after its summer slumber, and the impeccably landscaped estates and immaculate streets are once again adorned with expensive cars and well-heeled citizens. Elsewhere England www.visitengland.com/en/EN The queen has been fêted, the Olympics are over – now’s a great time to see the English at ease (and the museums without the long lines). And when it comes to eating, the influx of ethnic restaurants has inspired native chefs.

London

New Orleans www.neworleansonline.com The city is still coming back – your visit will help accelerate the process – and it’s still as much an American treasure as it is an anomaly. This is not what the Puritans had in mind: music and booze and spicy foods, oh yeah!

Anguilla

Anguilla www.ivisitanguilla.com The fairly flat island is known for its beaches, but the people are also amazing, exhibiting a warmth and friendliness toward visitors. This is a gracious, easygoing and somewhat overlooked piece of the Caribbean.

Myanmar www.myanmar-tourism.com After decades of oppression and inertia, the country is finally starting to loosen up. Which is good for the Burmese – Aung San Suu Kyi is now a member of parliament – and good for tourists, who have easier access to treasures like the plains of Bagan, with its thousands of temples and pagodas.

Portugal

New Orleans

Portugal www.visitportugal.com One of the most welcoming countries in the world (with the best English speakers in southern Europe). It’s having economic difficulties, but they’ve made the modest Portuguese more appreciative of what they have, like delicious food and excellent wine (including port). And it’s one of the cheapest countries on the continent.

dining Mason Jar Café, Fort Lauderdale www.TheMasonJarCafe.com Everyone loves chicken pot pie, and no one does it better than chef Ernest Rado at Mason Jar Café. His ratio of chicken to sauce to vegetables is dead-on. His flaky pastry crust is divine. Pure comfort food.

Ernie’s Italian Chophouse, Lighthouse Point www.ErniesItalianChophouse.com In the age of the corporate restaurant chain, it’s heartening to know that some restaurateurs still believe in putting their name on the door. John Tanasychuk

There are very few things John Tanasychuk will eat twice in any given month. A restaurant critic and Food Editor of the Sun Sentinel, John grew up in a multi-ethnic household where dinner might be pot roast or venison, roast chicken or stuffed cabbage, veal Marsala or chile. His mom grew up in a small town, his dad on a farm. So he learned early the importance of eating seasonally. He’s been eating professionally for more than two decades. He’s no slouch when it comes to cooking at home: Italian, Indian, barbecue, vegetarian. Cooking is his favorite way to relax. His Dining blog is linked at www.cityandshore.com.

Room 77

Room 77 www.room77.com A great hotel room can make a vacation – and a bad one can ruin it. (Ask anyone who’s slept above a noisy restaurant). Take the risk out of the equation with Room 77, our new favorite hotel guide. Enter your destination, check-in and check-out dates and the site combs the web for best available rates and guest reviews of relevant properties. All good info, but our favorite part is the tips on the best rooms at each hotel.

FlightView www.flightview.com/traveltools Airline travel can be a bit of a nightmare. After our fifth trip circling MIA while picking up a friend last month, we finally got savvy and downloaded flightview. com. Enter a flight number or route info and get real-time data on delays, gate changes and arrival times. We can’t make the flights run on time, but we can cut down on time in the cell-phone lot.

Ask SitInMySeats about Villa Tre Ville in Positano, on Italy's Amalfi Coast SeatGuru

SeatGuru www.seatguru.com Let’s face it, sitting next to the lavatory stinks. Avoid booking the wrong seat on your next flight with SeatGuru. Such a simple concept, yet so useful (and addictive). Before booking your next plane ticket, enter your airline name and flight number on the site and scan through a color-coded seating chart outlining the best and worst of what’s available. Goodbye nonreclining seats, hello power ports.

FlightView

SitinMySeats VIP Tickets, Travel & Concierge Services www.sitinmyseats.com Kick your vacation up a notch with a quick consult with SitinMySeats. The luxury concierge dishes out VIP seats and tickets to the best games in town – think NFL, NBA, MLB or NHL. Got a music lover in the family? Invest in concert tickets. A foodie? Hello, chef’s table. A car nut? Motor around town in a Rolls-Royce for the week. You dream it, they deliver.

TripIt www.tripit.com We rarely miss the travel agent days – it’s just so much simpler (and cheaper) to book our own flights and hotel rooms. But sorting through all the emails, confirmations and notes is a different story. That’s where TripIt comes in. Forward the app all your confirmation emails (flights, rental cars, hotels,) and it builds you a custom travel itinerary – simple as that.

Introducing Federation’s New Logo. Our mission hasn’t changed: taking care of the needs of the Jewish people and building a vibrant Jewish community here at home, in Israel and in 70 countries around the world. But some things have changed. As we look forward to a new year, we’re excited to brand our new logo with 100 other Jewish Federations — all united under one national umbrella of Jewish Federation of North America. The updated menorah, flame and umbrella represent our Jewish history and heritage, our responsibility for the community and our sense of hope and optimism for the future. Any time you see our logo, you’ll know Federation is there on behalf of Jewish Broward and Jewish people everywhere.

dining Ireland’s Steakhouse www.bonaventure.hyatt.com

At the edge of the Everglades near I-595 is your best and last chance for an incredible steak before venturing onto Alligator Alley. Tucked inside the Hyatt Bonaventure, Ireland’s is the fine steakhouse that has so far ruined me for all others in Broward County. If the perfectly grilled slabs of beef don’t entrance you, then leave it up to the succulent side dishes or the memorable selection of stylish steak knives.

Ireland’s Steakhouse

Noodles Panini www.noodlespaninirestaurant.com

Most of my newsroom colleagues know I have an unhealthy obsession with the meatball sandwich at Noodles Panini, a small bistro-like spot on Las Olas Boulevard near Southeast Ninth Avenue. The gargantuan sandwich, which is served with a steak knife, features deliciously tender meatballs, topped with a wad of mozzarella, sprinkled with basil, and perched atop freshbaked bread that sits in a pool of red sauce. John the Baker garlic rolls www.johnthebaker.net

The times I’ve lived in other parts of Florida, it was always John the Baker’s garlic rolls I craved when I came to visit. These starchy, oily balls of dough are topped with generous amounts of shriveled-up garlic all over. A lifelong customer of John’s, I even worked two days as a garlic roll maker at one of his former restaurants. I had to call it quits after my then-girlfriend repeatedly complained that I reeked of garlic. The girlfriend is long-gone, but the garlic fixation lingers. Las Colinas (Wilton Manors), Casavana (Miami Lakes), La Viña Aragon (Hialeah), Las Vegas and Don Ramon (all over the place)

After spending a year in Cuban-deprived Connecticut, I grew to appreciate the fact that excellent, inexpensive

black beans and rice can be found a short drive away from nearly anywhere. The gooey flan, rich yuca, thin-sliced mariquitas … it’s rarely done right outside of South Florida. And don’t ask me for a favorite; I could deliberate it all day. Rendezvous Waterfront Bar and Grill, Fort Lauderdale www.therendezvousbar andgrill.com

This is my family’s secret sanctuary in Broward County, the place we visit on a Saturday afternoon after a trying week. Tucked away on a quiet marina off State Road 84, Rendezvous is as close to the Florida Keys as it gets in Broward, all while being a stone’s throw away from I-95. It’s not particularly a foodie mecca – just an out-of-the-way, relaxed place to stare at the water and grab an always-good bite and a beer.

The Art of Selecting a Luxury Timepiece BY JONO KING

T

he first portable timepiece was created in the early 1500s by Peter Henlein in Germany. Since then, innovations in design and technology have made quality handmade wristwatches as much about making a personal statement as it is about precision time keeping. For some people, a luxury timepiece is a status symbol often made of precious metals and sometimes adorned with diamonds and jewels. “For centuries, watches have been viewed as fine works of art and perceived as much more than a simple timepiece,” says Scott King of King Jewelers. “Whether simple or elegant, the precision, engineering and production of a luxury watch puts it in a category all its own and is definitely a prized possession. “

Choosing an heirloom

Since luxury watches are always considered special, one can never go wrong when buying a watch for themselves or as a gift. In fact, highquality luxury timepieces are often handed down from one generation to another. Given that different watches fit different occasions and personalities, it’s often a good idea to have an assortment of fine watches from highly credible watchmakers, such as the authorized luxury brands King Jewelers has in their salon. Those who have a passion for watches surely appreciate the skill and craftsmanship applied to each timepiece. “King’s prides itself in offering the largest selection of unique, limited edition and even one-of-a-kind collectible timepieces from the world’s finest and most sought after brands,” said Jono King. “When selecting a watch, I always attempt to ascertain our client’s purpose for their purchase, whether they are looking for a new formal or sport watch, the newest collector’s item, or simply filling a void in their collection. Through my carefully chosen questions, detail-oriented nature and extensive horological knowledge, I maintain a perfect track record assisting our clients with their gifts,” says Jono King.

Traits of a fine timepiece

There are many factors to consider before selecting the right timepiece. Fine watches are usually created around older mechanical technology that has existed for centuries. These types of movements last for decades and require the human touch. Usually, the more mechanical and highly complicated a watch is, the greater the value. Examples of complications include; Chronographs, Mono-Pusher Chronographs, Retropantte’s, GMTs, World Times, Annual Calendars, Perpetual Calendar, Minute Repeaters,

Grande Soneires, and the greatest complication of them all – the Tourbillion. Jono King’s advice, “Before selecting your desired timepiece, it’s important to consider its primary function. Is it going to be used as an everyday watch? If so, one must consider their hobbies. If you play golf, tennis or any sport, you may want to opt for one with shock resistance layered within the movement. If it’s a dress watch, you should consider the thickness of the watch, will it fit under your dress shirts? No matter the reason, King Jewelers will help guide you in the right direction and certainly supports the inventory for options. Through its solidified partnerships with the finest Swiss luxury watch brands, King Jewelers ensures its offerings of the most unique, exclusive and in-demand watches making your buying decision fulfilling.”

our collectors.” Jono also notes an increase of sales within the women’s complicated watch category, adding, “Our sophisticated clientele has gained tremendous respect for the craftsmanship involved in watchmaking. 7 TIPS TO Know 1. Automatic vs. Quartz. A true luxury watch will usually be an automatic watch – one that runs by physical movement not by a battery (quartz watches have batteries). 2. Caliber vs. Standard Automatic. A caliber automatic watch provides more precise time than does a standard automatic watch. On average, a standard watch will be off by 12 minutes after one month. 3. Dial size. Be sure to put the watch on your wrist and see if you can read the time clearly. 4. Thickness and weight. Make sure the watch is compatible with your typical daily wardrobe. If you wear cuff-buttoned business shirts, you’ll want a watch thin enough to slide underneath. 5. Classic vs. sports materials. A classic timeless luxury watch is likely crafted in precious metals such as Gold or Platinum. Whereas, Titanium, DLC, PVD, Steel, or bands made of canvas or leather, are considered sport. 6. Investment. It’s best to select a classic design (not trendy) limited by edition or made from a precious metal. 7. Choose an authorized, reputable dealer. A reputable dealer stands behind the product and your watch will appraise at the value you pay.
