What is a Chanticleer? The Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and came to Coastal Carolina University when the University was a member of the University of South Carolina system. A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time.

victory over Southern Conference champion Elon to improve to 83-26-8 (.743) all-time at home under Docking. The 2011 team proved to have the most lethal attack in the country as the Chants ranked tops in the NCAA in both scoring offense (3.0 goals per game) and total goals (66). Individually, junior striker Ashton Bennett led the nation in total goals with 23, ranked first in total points with 53 (23g/7a) and second in goals per game with 1.05. On the defensive side of the ball, Docking produced his fourth MLS College/SuperDraft selection as defender Cyprian Hedrick, a NSCAA Scholar All-American, was selected 30th overall by Sporting Kansas City and goalkeeper Scott Angevine finished his career with a Coastal Carolina record-tying 16 career shutouts. Docking led the Chanticleers to a clean sweep of the Big South postseason awards as Bennett was named the Attacking Player of the Year, Hedrick earned Defensive Player of the Year and Kjartan Sigurdsson garnered Freshman of the Year. Luis Faz, Pedro Ribeiro, Scott Angevine and Justin Portillo joined Bennett, Hedrick and Sigurdsson on the first team; while Ricky Garbanzo, Henrik Robstad and Sigurdsson earned All-Freshman team honors. Docking also helped Bennett, who was named one of 12 M.A.C. Hermann Trophy semifinalists, and Ribeiro to NSCAA All-American honors. The Chanticleers won three-straight games in the Big South Tournament, which included a 3-1 upset win over tournament host and top-seeded High Point in the championship game to earn the sixth berth in the NCAA College Cup under Docking. Coastal nearly reached the second round of the tournament, but a late comeback by No. 24 Duke lifted the Blue Devils to a 2-1 come-frombehind win over Coastal. The Chants led 1-0 after 75 minutes of play, but Duke netted a pair of goals over a seven-minute span on the way to the win. Docking helped land five Chanticleers on the All-Big South Postseason Teams and watched as senior defender Ross Kelly was tabbed as the Big South Tournament MVP after helping anchor a Coastal backline that allowed just one goal over the course of the tournament. Docking led the 2009 Chanticleers to an unbeaten season in the Big South Conference for the second time in his career, guiding Coastal to its fourth Big South Regular Season Championship with a 5-0-3 record, while earning a 9-2-7 mark overall. Highlighting the season was a 13game, two-month unbeaten streak from Sept. 13-Nov. 12. In addition, Docking coached senior Djamel Bekka, who was his fifth Big South Player of the Year. The team finished 16th in the national poll, had an 18-4-0 record, won the Big South regular season championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. In addition, Coastal defeated No. 16 VCU and No. 21 Ohio State at home on back-to-back Sundays as part of a 16-1-0 run to close out the regular season after falling to eventual national runner-up UNC Charlotte in the season opener. The Chants also celebrated the program’s second-ever NCAA postseason home game with a 4-3 victory over Southern Conference champion Elon. On the defensive side of the ball, defender Cyprian Hedrick, a NSCAA Scholar All-American, was selected

30th overall by Sporting Kansas City and goalkeeper Scott Angevine finished his career with a Coastal Carolina record-tying 16 career shutouts. The 2011 team also proved to have the most lethal attack in the country as the Chants ranked tops in the NCAA in both scoring offense (3.0 goals per game) and total goals (66). Individually, junior striker Ashton Bennett led the nation in total goals with 23, ranked first in total points with 53 (23g/7a) and second in goals per game with 1.05. Russell helped the Chanticleers to a clean sweep of the Big South postseason awards as Bennett was named the Attacking Player of the Year, Hedrick earned Defensive Player of the Year and defender Kjartan Sigurdsson garnered Freshman of the Year. Luis Faz, Pedro Ribeiro, Angevine and Justin Portillo joined Bennett, Hedrick and Sigurdsson on the first team; while Ricky Garbanzo, Henrik Robstad and Sigurdsson earned All-Freshman team honors. Russell’s arrival in Conway paid immediate dividends as the Chanticleers won the 2010 Big South Tournament and reached the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time in school history. Coastal finished the year with an overall record of 12-8-2 and won the most games in a season since the 2004 team finished with 14 wins. The Chants turned in eight shutouts during the course of the year and allowed just one team from the Big South to score more than one goal in any single game.

The Chants steamrolled through the Big South Tournament posted wins over VMI, Gardner-Webb and tournament host and top-seeded High Point. Coastal nearly upset Duke in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, but a late comeback by the Blue Devils thwarted the upset bid. Russell helped five Chanticleers earned All-Big South honors, which included first team selections Ross Kelly and Alex Russell. Kelly was also named the 2010 Big South Tournament MVP after anchoring a Chanticleer backline that allowed just one goal during the tournament. Coastal keeper Scott Angevine and freshman midfielder Justin Portillo were tabbed to the All-Big South second team, while Pedro Ribeiro and Portillo made the All-Freshman Team. Russell began his coaching career in 2009 while serving as student volunteer assistant coach on Docking’s staff. He helped the Chants win the Big South regular season title and post and unbeaten mark in conference play for just the fourth time in school history. Russel has also coached a U-15 boy’s team in Myrtle Beach and has held several other coaching assignments since embarking on his coaching career. A four-year defender for the Chants from 2005-08, Russell drew 74 starts in the 78 games in which he appeared and currently ranks ninth all-time at Coastal in games played and eighth in games started. Russell proved to be a mainstay on the back line and anchored one of the top defensive units in the Big South in each of his four seasons on the pitch. In fact, Russell and the Coastal defense recorded a total of 21 shutouts over a four-year span and never ranked worse than third in the Big South in that category. That same defense finished fourth or better in goals against average in three of his four seasons and limited opponents to just a total of 27 goals during the 2006 season. A native of South Elgin, Ill., Russell played an instrumental role in helping Coastal win one Big South regular season championship, one Big South Tournament championship and make one NCAA Tournament appearance. The Chanticleers posted a 42-26-1 overall record and a 20-6-1 conference record with Russell on the back line. Individually, Russell was named All-Big South on three different occasions and was tabbed to the Big South All-Tournament team three times. He went on to participate in the Major League Soccer Combine during the summer of 2009 and the United Soccer League combine in 2010. Upon graduation, Russell played professionally with the Charleston Battery, Real Maryland and Charlotte Eagles of the USL. Russell graduated from Coastal Carolina in 2009 with a degree in business management.

eal Robinson joined Shaun Docking’s staff as a volunteer assistant goalkeeping coach prior to the 2011 season. Under the tutelage of Robinson, Scott Angevine turned in one of best seasons between the pipes in Chanticleer history in 2011. Angevine recorded five shutouts to tie Robinson atop the Coastal Carolina career list with 16. In addition, Angevine finished the season with 62 saves over 1,950 minutes while surrendering only 22 goals to post a .738 save percentage en route to first team All-Big South and NSCA All-South Atlantic Region second team honors. Prior joining Docking’s staff, Robinson spent time on the sidelines at both Socastee and Myrtle Beach high schools. In addition, Robinson has coached youth select club teams in the Myrtle Beach area. A four-year starter in goal for the Chanticleers from

1993-96, Robinson started each contest of his 69-game career and compiled a 40-26-3 record. Robinson’s 69 matches played and started are both Chanticleer career records. In 1995 Robinson led the Paul Banta-coached Chants to a 17-5-0 record, which included Big South regular season and tournament championships along with the program’s second-ever NCAA Tournament berth. The 1995 season also saw Robinson garner second team AllBig South and All-Tournament honors after pacing the conference with a 0.96 goals against average. In addition to his games played and games started records, Robinson tops the CCU career annals for minutes (6,190), shutouts (16) and saves (282). He also ranks in numerous single season categories including fourth in minutes played (1,866 in 1995), seventh in saves (78 in 1996), eighth in saves (77 in 1995), eighth in goals

against average (0.96 in 1995) and eighth in shutouts (six in both 1994 and 1995). Robinson was inducted into the Coastal Carolina George F. “Buddy” Sasser Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 15, 2005. After his playing days at Coastal, Robinson went on to play professionally with the Myrtle Beach Seadawgs in the Second Division of the United Soccer Leagues. Originally from Nantwich, England, Robinson graduated from Coastal Carolina in 1997 with a degree in business administration. Robinson and his wife Maryanne reside in Myrtle Beach. He has three stepchildren: Brittany, Christopher and Giorgio Picora.

acob Downey enters his first season as a student assistant coach where he assists head coach Shaun Docking with every aspect of the program. Downey, a central midfielder for the Chanticleers from 2009-2011, helped Coastal to an impressive 3914-9 overall, Big South regular season championships in 2009 and 2011, a Big South tournament title in 2010 and back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances (20102011). Downey’s coaching career received an unfortunate start after suffering a career-ending injury in the 13th game of his senior season. Despite the disappointment of not being able to play, Downey transitioned to the role of a student coach and vocally led the team from the sidelines. For his career, Downey appeared in 47 games, making 14 starts and recorded seven shots. His work in the Nine NCAA Appearances

Big South Conference

BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has

matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League’s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each studentathlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.” The 2012-13 academic year features the Big South’s largest membership (12) and sponsored sports (19) in its 29 years of existence. The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League’s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South’s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid – receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men’s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League’s third Commissioner, and in his 16 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new heights. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during his tenure, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’s basketball, baseball, softball and men’s soccer for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League’s

vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and oversaw the additions of men’s and women’s indoor track & field in 1997. The Conference’s 19th championship sport -- women’s lacrosse, begins play this season with eight members. At the same time, Kallander has solidified Conference membership, as an all-time high 12 member institutions comprise the 29-year old League. Recent additions include High Point, Gardner-Webb, Presbyterian College and Longwood, plus the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander’s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live video streaming event in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 700 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had an individual National Champion six times, has had more than 280 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in football, men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track & field, and men’s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship seven times in addition to the first men’s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the first women’s golf program advance to the national finals, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team five consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, has had six NFL Draft picks, and has had two institutions finish in the top 10 in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships -- including the Conference’s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event (fifth in 2007). In 2006-07, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina’s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed four out of the last eight years -- including a national seed for the first time in 2010, while the Chanticleers’ FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South’s football existence. The 2009-10 season saw Liberty’s Sam Chelanga win two NCAA National Championships (cross country, 10,000-meter run); Coastal Carolina’s baseball team reach the Super Regionals for the second time in three years as well as being ranked No. 1 in the national RPI and as high as No. 3 in the national polls; and three women’s basketball teams reach the postseason for the first time in Conference history. In 2010-11, Chelanga won two more NCAA National Championships (cross country, outdoor 5,000-meter run), the Big South had its first automatic bid recipient in

football (Coastal Carolina), UNC Asheville reached the Second Round of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Coastal Carolina’s women’s golf team was the first in Conference history to advance to the NCAA Championship out of Regional play, and a League-record 18 baseball players were drafted in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft. This past season, the Big South had a record 41 student-athletes earn All-America distinction, while another 10 were named Academic All-Americans. The Conference also won its first football playoff game (Stony Brook), had the national women’s basketball Rookie Coach of the Year, had two men’s soccer teams reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in a decade (Coastal Carolina, Liberty), and had a record five individuals selected for the NCAA Men’s Golf Regionals -- the most of any Division I conference in 2011-12. In addition, Liberty was the first men’s golf team in Conference history to win an NCAA Regional, and the Flames went on to finish 10th at the national event. Several former Big South student-athletes have also reached national prominence in recent years. Coastal Carolina’s Amber Campbell made the U.S. Olympic Team in 2008 and 2012, and was one of five former Big South athletes to compete in the 2008 Games; VMI’s Reggie Williams reached the NBA with the Golden State Warriors in 2010, UNC Asheville’s Ty Wigginton was named an American League All-Star in 2010, and Coastal Carolina’s Dustin Johnson has won six PGA Tour events since departing the Big South Conference in 2007. Three former Big South baseball players made their major league debuts in 2012, while Avery Warley became the third Big South women’s basketball player to play in the WNBA. The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 “Best of the Best” moments in League history from 1983-2008, with Liberty University’s 10-year women’s basketball championship run from 1996-2007 being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South’s first 25 years. The Conference’s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South’s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 100 Academic All-Americans in its 28 years of existence. Furthermore, the Big South has recorded double figure totals in NCAA Public Recognition Awards for APR progress the last three years.

10 Big South Tournament Championships

Chanticleer All-Americans Guy Norcott, Coastal Carolina’s first ever All-American, earned third team honors following the 1992 season. He led the Chanticleers to their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 1992 where the Chants shutout in-state rival South Carolina before falling to Davidson in a shootout after a 0-0 draw. Norcott was named Coastal’s first Big South Player of the Year in 1990. He finished his career a three-time all-conference selection (1989, 1990 and 1992) and a two-time Big South All-Tournament team member. Norcott started all 75 games of his career while recording 10 goals and seven assists for 27 points.

Joseph Ngwenya • 2002 & 2003 All-American • Forward Joseph Ngwenya is Coastal Carolina’s only two-time All-American earning second team honors in 2002 and first team honors in 2003. In addition, Ngwenya was named a CoSIDA Academic-America in 2003 for his outstanding work in the classroom. Ngwenya, a member of the Coastal Carolina Sasser Hall of Fame, is arguably the best soccer player to ever play in the Big South Conference as he earned Big South Player of the Year honors in 2002 and 2003. In 2002 Ngwenya led the nation with 27 goals scored. He directed the Chants to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including a third round run in 2003. Boyzzz Khumalo • 2003 All-American • Forward Boyzzz Khumalo earned third team NSCAA All-America honors after leading Coastal with 16 assists during the 2003 season. Khumalo closed out his career in 2004 with 56 points (15g, 26a). He is tied for fourth all-time in the CCU annals with 26 assists despite playing only two seasons. Khumalo helped the Chants to the NCAA Tournament in both of his seasons, including school and conference-best third round run in 2003.

Mubarike Chisoni • 2003 All-American • Midfielder Mubarike Chisoni earned third team All-American honors from the NSCAA in 2003. Chisoni was a three-time All-Big South first team selection, earning the honor in 2002, 2003 and 2004. He concluded his career ranked ninth on the Chanticleer all-time list with 78 total points as he netted 27 goals and assisted on 24 others during his four-year career.

Ashton Bennett • 2011 All-American • Forward Ashton Bennett was named Coastal’s second first team All-American by the NSCAA in 2011. Bennett led the NCAA in scoring with 23 total goals. In addition, he finished second in the country with a 1.05 goals per game average. He was named the Big South Attacking Player of the Year, first team all-conference and first team AllSouth Atlantic Region. He garnered national attention for his play in 2011 earning Top Drawer Soccer National Player of the Week, three Top Drawer Soccer National Team of the Week and two College Soccer News National Team of the Week honors.

Pedro Ribeiro • 2011 All-American • Midfielder Pedro Ribeiro earned third team All-American honors from the NSCAA in 2011. Ribeiro was also honored as a first team allconference and first team All-South Atlantic Region selection.
