Joe Barberi sucessful in part from debate Local attorney wrote popular commercial jingle himself By Joe Borlik Senior Reporter

Joe Barberi attributes much of his success as an trial attorney to Central Michigan University. Before becoming one of mid-Michigan’s most well-known attorneys, Barberi was just another CMU student. He met his wife of 33 years, Barbara, at CMU, both his children are CMU graduates, his father Carlo Barberi holds the record for most letters for a varsity athlete at CMU and his idea to become a lawyer came from the advise of a CMU teacher. “Maroon and gold have been in my blood for a long time, Barberi said. “I remember being a ball boy at CMU basketball games when I was 7 or 8. Like many students, he wasn’t sure what he wanted to do his freshman year. He was cut from CMU’s baseball team and

was torn between pursuing into a career of teaching or a career of broadcasting. In an effort to earn a scholarship, Barberi decided to join the debate team under the advise of a friend. While on the debate team, Joe Barberi Barberi represented the university on a number of issues all across the country and won numerous trophies and awards for his forensic speaking ability. His decision to join the debate team was one that would change the rest of his life, as the director of the team and his graduate assistant were the ones that suggested he go into law. “They told me, ‘we know you’re going into radio and teaching but we think you should be a trial attorney, he said. “The thought had never even entered my brain prior to that. I had never even entertained the notion, but they told me I could affect more lives in a positive way in the courtroom than I could as a teacher or a radio personality. After CMU, Barberi served nine months in the United States Navy and graduated fifth in

“Anytime I go to O’Kelly’s for a football game, college students come up to me and start singing, ‘My attorney is Joe Barberi, he can be yours too.’ Its been a catchy jingle and I’m blessed that people like it. All my ads on TV I write myself and I mean them. Joe Barberi, local attorney his class from the Detroit College of Law and served as county prosecutor for Mount Pleasant throughout the 1970s. In 1988, he decided to start his own law firm by himself, a decision which surprised many because of his involvement in politics. Today, his firm has four lawyers, six paralegals and three other employees. Barberi said that out of 324 jury trials, he has only lost three. “Every case I take, I take personally, he said. “Those aren’t just words, that’s who I am. Barberi said the mark of a good trial lawyer is not to lose a case that factually should have been won. “There are a lot of people that are much smarter than Joe Barberi, but there aren’t a lot

that will prepare harder for a trial, he said. He said he still loves going to work and defending people’s rights. He plans on working for at least another 15 years. In addition to being the first lawyer in Michigan to be on the back of a phone book, Barberi is also popular from his television commercials, and wrote the Joe Barberi jingle himself for a radio ad in the mid ’90s. “Anytime I go to O’Kelly’s for a football game, college students come up to me and start singing, ‘My attorney is Joe Barberi, he can be yours too,’ he said. “Its been a catchy jingle and I’m blessed that people like it. Max and Emily’s a downtown staple By Lonnie Allen Staff Reporter

Paige calamari/staff photogrpaher

Farwell senior Megan Courser prepares a sandwich at Max and Emily’s Eatery. Courser has been an employee at Max and Emily’s for three years.

Walking into Max and Emily’s, it is one sandwich place not easily forgotten around town. The family-owned business, located at 125 E. Broadway St., out pours with support for its neighbors and community, which is owner Tim Brockman’s main focus. “We have been downtown for 14 years,” Brockman said. “We want people when they think of downtown Mount Pleasant to think Max and Emily’s.” Inside, noticeable artwork adorns the red brick walls. The walls also feature a couple of jerseys. One is a San Francisco 49ers football jersey from Brock Gutierrez. The other wall has a basketball jersey belonging to Chris Kaman, both former Central Michigan University athletes. “I was joking recently with Dan LeFevour the other day and expect one of his jerseys when he also makes it,” Brockman said. Artwork and jerseys are not the main attraction at Max and Emily’s, though. It is the

food, the people and a friendly atmosphere that brings customers coming in time and again, said Leanne Burton, a Shepherd resident, enjoying her lunch at Max and Emily’s. “I absolutely like eating here,” Burton said. “It is a place I can come alone and still feel comfortable and enjoy my lunch. You often run into someone you know.” A hard wood floor down the center leading to the bakery case faintly separates the carpeted dining areas from the main walkway leading to the main action of this eatery. There the guest line up, in what looks like a never-ending line of people. As guest walk in and line up, no one is discouraged in the size of the line waiting to order. Brockman said we have developed a nice flow after 14 years of business. “It may take a minute to place the order but they know once the order is placed the food will get to them very quickly.” Brockman said, “They get the best ingredients for the price.” Max and Emily’s has always offered breakfast and coffee, but the popular draw is the lunch, Brockman said. Some sandwiches served are unique to Max and Emily’s and all sandwiches are numbered to make it easier

for the guest. “Some people eat the same thing after coming here for 14 years.” Brockman said. “Others take and mark off the paper menu trying to do the Julia Childs thing going through the whole menu an item at a time.” Brockman said he is grateful for CMU and all of there support to his business. “We appreciate the CMU community and we respect and honor the relationship developed over the years,” Brockman said. “We are just trying to create a warm atmosphere good service with great food for the people that come here. Repeat business is very strong. We fill up a lot.” Brockman said he believes it is the positive employees that work for him are another reason for success over the years. “We keep good positive people working here. We created a culture that the employees come in wanting to work they hate it when it is slow.” Brockman said. Max and Emily’s is open Monday through Thursday 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. news@cm-life.com

Best place for bling? Ace of Diamonds on Broadway By Randi Shaffer Staff Reporter

Ace of Diamonds lets students flash their gold and silver around campus, which is why the jewelry store is a favorite among students. Central Michigan University students voted Ace of Diamonds, 128 E. Broadway St., the best jewelry store in Mount Pleasant. Store owner Kriss Roethlisberger was excited about winning the award. “We’re psyched, she said. “We love the students. Roethlisberger said she feels Ace of Diamonds has a special connection to its student customers. She spends some of her free time on CMU’s campus, walking her dogs and talking to people she meets. Ace of Diamonds even has two student employees, who help pick out merchandise for customers. One of the student employees, Mount Pleasant freshman Joe Pina, has been working at the jewelry store for a year and a half. “It’s the only job I’ve ever had, he said. “I

like it when they (students) come in here. Usually they’re joking, messing around. Katie McCann, a Mount Pleasant senior, has been working at Ace of Diamonds for the same amount of time. “I love seeing CMU students here, she said. “Without the students, there’s a drastic change from May to August. The two student employees were also excited to hear that Ace of Diamonds won a ‘Best of’ award. “It’s great to know that even though we’re not a bar or a place to eat, we were picked, McCann said. “Students can come to us for their jewelry needs. Roethlisberger said Ace of Diamonds is so committed to their customers that many students return. “We don’t have a lot of students until they’re seniors, she said. “But then we have a lot of repeat customers. Roethlisberger said most students don’t even know there is a downtown Mount Pleasant until their later years of college, when they could drive off-campus to the bars and other attractions downtown. Best burger in town: Freddie’s Tavern By Aaron McMann Staff Reporter

The atmosphere might be dark and dim, but the food at Freddie’s Neighborhood Tavern more than makes up for it. Located at 705 S. Adams St., the tavern has been a consistent winner for “Best Burger” in ‘The Best’ of Mount Pleasant. “It’s gratifying because you’re doing something right,” said Freddie’s owner and Mount Pleasant native Fred Phillips. The key, Phillips said, is the way the burger is prepared. “We use certified Angus Beef...we sign a contract with Angus for it. Most places claim to have Angus, and they probably do, but we use certified beef,” he said. Freddie’s also uses baked buns from Robaire’s Bakery, 1903 S. Mission St. And unlike most restaurants in the city, Freddie’s does not heavily rely on college students for business.

Diverse customer base Manager Amberly Zimmer emphasized the diverse crowds the tavern attracts. The tavern gets a heavy local crowd, especially at night, and also league teams and college students, she said. “We keep updating,” Zimmer said as she pointed to one of the several plasma TVs that hang from the dark walls. Customer’s can also make use of three pool tables, an air hockey table, dart boards and arcade video games. Phillips said his business is not a real hot spot with the younger crowd, partially because of its location. An estimated 20 to 25 percent of business comes from graduate students and professors, he said, but they encourage younger students a visit. “Problem is that we’re kind of off the beaten path (from Mission St.)...downtown is a totally different place,” Phillips said. THE MENU “It was flattering (to be named ‘best burg-

ent options are available: Chicago style, Pepper jack Burger, Southwest Cheeseburger, Jalapeno Cheddar Cheeseburger, Mushroom Swiss, Olive Burger, Bacon Cheeseburger, a regular cheeseburger and the award-winning Freddie’s Burger. news@cm-life.com
