Command uncases colors at new headquarters by Installation Management Command-Europe Public Affairs The U.S. Army Installation Management Command-Europe officially transferred from Heidelberg to Sembach during an uncasing of the unit colors at its new headquarters on Sembach Kaserne. The IMCOM-Europe move is part of the U.S. Army’s transformation in Europe, which will include the closing of U.S. Army facilities in Heidelberg.
“IMCOM-Europe is preparing for the future today by consolidating, divesting and investing here in Europe,” said Kathleen Y. Marin, director of IMCOMEurope. “IMCOM-Europe’s move to Sembach is part of that process.” IMCOM-Europe is rapidly consolidating Cold War-era installations into hubs of excellence, one of which is located at U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern. Family tradition of core values
COMMENTARY
by Col. Troy Dunn 86th Mission Support Group commander “All that you do, do it with your might. Things by half are never done right.” My father taught me this quote and made me commit it to memory when I was a child. His father encouraged him to live by that same principle. For several years, I thought memorizing the quote was an initial rite of passage, passed exclusively from father to son and unique only to the Dunn lineage. I quickly realized, after following in my father’s and grandfather’s military footsteps, the outstanding professionals of our enlisted corps also live by that same principle. I grew up as an enlisted kid always around NCOs and SNCOs, since my father is a retired Air Force SNCO and my grandfather was an enlisted Army Soldier. Nevertheless, it was not until I accepted the call into the profession of arms that I gained a clearer perspective, deeper insight and richer appreciation of that quote as it pertains to our Air Force core values and the strength of our enlisted Airmen. One of the many lessons I learn from SNCOs every day is excellence — “all that you do, do it with your might.” Our SNCOs set the standard for excellence and lead Airmen to excel in their skills, proficiency, mission accomplishment and dedication to our profession of arms. For example, our security forces SNCOs mentor Airmen who risk their lives on a daily basis to respond to distress calls, enforce standards, and safeguard
our installations and assets. Those same SNCOs demonstrate steadfast commitment to readiness, combat training and exercise scenarios, which prepare our defenders to respond quickly at home station or in deployed environments. Lastly, many model excellence by obtaining their Community College of the Air Force degree, completing professional military education, and working toward advanced educational goals. One of the many lessons I learn from NCOs every day is integrity — “things by half are never done right.” Our NCOs understand the importance of doing things right and doing the right thing. For example, our contracting NCOs are entrusted to make key decisions and obligate resources spanning millions of dollars that best meet the needs of our people and organizations. Since several of our NCOs are first-level supervisors, they have to ensure our Airmen maintain proper accountability, and those same Airmen also know how to identify and fix trouble areas. But integrity is more than doing things right. It also includes doing the right thing by focusing on ways to combat sexual assaults, suicidal ideations and alcoholrelated incidents. Our NCOs internalize integrity by doing the right thing in both their personal and professional lives and guiding all Airmen on taking care of each other on and off duty. At this point, you might be wondering, where is the “service” portion in the quote my father taught me? If you have not figured it out by now, then you missed the true greatness of our enlisted Airmen and the quote itself. So, let’s go back in
time. When I was learning the quote at 5 years old, I started the quote with, “Things that you do.” My dad, however, would correct me, as his father did him, that the first word of the quote actually started with “all.” The reason my dad corrected me was because “all” means everything — you have to give everything you have. When you truly give everything to the defense of this grateful nation, you then are putting service before self. Every day, I watch in amazement as our enlisted members give it their all and put it all on the line. These folks do some very incredible things. Cyber warriors defend our networks and continually mitigate cyber threats while providing first-class communications support to joint customers. Postal workers put themselves on the line in detachments in Istanbul and Milan to deliver mail to the U.S. Embassy and Army and Air Force installations. The Deployment Transition Center works with a variety of specialties to ease the psychological burdens sustained during combat deployments. Force support professionals continually find ways to work around manning and budgetary constraints to provide exceptional quality of life and personnel programs. I am proud of our enlisted Airmen both active and retired. I am proud to be third-generation military, committed to an honorable profession, dedicated to the defense of a grateful nation, and devoted to the men and women of our armed forces. And, I am proud of my father and grandfather who wore this uniform with dignity, pride and honor. Happy Father’s Day, Dad!
Action Line: Trash in Kaiserslautern Military Community Center parking lot QUESTION: Have you been to the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center lately? And have you taken a walk through their parking lot? I have been to the KMCC twice in the last two weeks and have parked out front from the main entrance. While walking into the center, I look around, and I must say, I am very embarrassed at the amount of trash I see on the ground. I’m not talking about a cup here, a piece of paper there, or a couple of pieces of trash; that is something I would easily pick up and dispose of. What I’m talking about are multiple paper cups, napkins from the food court and pizza boxes (individual ones). I even saw a couple of floss picks on the ground. It almost makes you think someone is dumping their trash in the KMCC parking lot. I spoke with the KMCC manager, and he said he would go look at it and get his people on it, but that was two weeks ago. I thought this to be important considering how many hundreds of millions of dollars we

spent on the KMCC, and we cannot keep the parking lot clean. ANSWER: Thank you for your concern regarding the appearance of the KMCC and Ramstein Air Base. Base appearance is everyone’s responsibility, including the 86th Airlift Wing, all tenant organizations and the Army and Air Force Exchange Service. The KMCC is a unique facility within the Department of Defense, and responsibility for facility appearance (including the parking lots) rests with AAFES, our mission support and civil engineer groups. I have requested our entire team pay special attention to the parking lots to ensure we keep them as clean as possible under current fiscal constraints. Overall base appearance is everyone’s responsibility. I encourage everyone to stop littering and pick up and properly dispose of any trash we see. Together, we can all make a difference to ensure Ramstein remains a great place to live, work and play.

886th CES deactivates to meet AF initiative Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Dymekre Allen 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 886th Civil Engineer Squadron was deactivated and reorganized to enhance efficiencies, allowing the Air Force a better way to apply limited resources and reduce risk to missions and Airmen through smarter requirement prioritization. “This reorganization reduces overall costs and manpower while optimizing operational support,” said Tech. Sgt. Jeffrey Allen, 886th CES programs NCOIC. As part of the Air Force-wide civil engineer transformation initiative, the 886th CES was inactivated along with several other changes to organizations and processes throughout the 86th Civil Engineer Group and Air Force civil engineer community. The fire emergency services flight and orderly room staff will join the 86th CES, which comprises the construction and housing elements of CE and falls under the command of Lt. Col. Jarrett Purdue. The readiness and emergency management and explosive ordnance disposal flights will join the 786th CES, which primarily conducts operations under the command of Lt. Col. Tiffany Warnke. The 886th CES was initially reorganized when the Air Force initiated the first spiral of civil engineer transformation. The 435th realigned from a dual-squadron group under the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing to a three-squadron group under the 86th Airlift Wing. This is intended to bring the 86th CEG into line with the preferred two-squadron structure. “I look forward to these changes,” said Col. Scott Warner, 86th CEG commander. “They are a team of responders that are constantly prepared for any emergency situation.” The 835th CES was originally established Sept. 11, 2007, as one of the only emergency services squadrons in the Air Force and was later renumbered to the 886th on July 16, 2009. “The 886th had a short history, but was hands down one of See INACTIVATION, Page 7

the 86th AW, Mordente will be responsible for six groups, 28 squadrons and three different bases in Germany, Spain and Belgium. “I look forward to building upon the many achievements that the 86th Airlift Wing is known for … I can assure you that our purpose and our efforts at Ramstein will continue to remain on speed and on course,” Mordente said. “We will focus on our people and our mission. We will continue to produce the combat delivery, mobility, contingency response, and cyber capabilities upon which our nation and allies depend.” Before becoming commander of the 86th
AW, Mordente served as deputy director of operations and plans for USTRANSCOM at Scott Air Force Base, Ill., where he was responsible for the planning, coordinating and monitoring of global air, land and sea transportation provided by the command’s three components: Air Mobility Command, Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, and Military Sealift Command. During his last assignment to Ramstein, Mordente served as an instructor pilot and squadron training officer where he participated in operations Provide Promise, Provide Comfort and Provide Transition.

Infrastructure assessment
The 86th Airlift Wing will host a group of approximately 36 contractors until June 27 on local installations in the KMC. The group will be surveying buildings. The contractors will be collecting data in teams of six for future use by the 86th Civil Engineer Group. The teams will be visiting buildings on the Rod & Gun club site, CTS, Landstuhl, Einsiedlerhof, Vogelweh, Kapaun and Ramstein. In each facility visited, they will be evaluating the condition of the building, looking for energy and water conservation upgrades, and completing an inventory of real property installed equipment. Therefore, they will be accessing all areas of the building. The building facility manager will be the liaison between the contracting team and building users, so know the name of your facility manager so you can be sure to remain updated on the team’s expected arrival date and time. Baumholder Soldier recognized as best in Army by Sgt. 1st Class Randall Jackson 30th Medical Command Public Affairs BAUMHOLDER, Germany — Before the Army, Sgt. Denicio Diaz worked some very long days to support his young family. Each morning, he’d wake at sunrise for his shift at a grocery store, followed by a second job in airport retail. The Chicago native did all he could to support his infant son and fiancee. Coming home at midnight, he’d say a few words to his soon-to-be-bride before falling asleep. For 18 months, Diaz worked six days a week, but never made enough to offer his family what he felt they deserved. Each day was the same grueling routine, each week a struggle that got him nowhere. His brother had become a Soldier, inspiring Diaz to look into joining the service. In June 2008, he met with an Army recruiter. “I never thought I could be a Soldier,” Diaz said. “My mindset of a Soldier was of an invincible human
who couldn’t be harmed, couldn’t be touched.” Diaz joined the field artillery. Before leaving for basic training, he married, so his wife and son could be with him wherever the Army posted him. While serving as an artilleryman, leaders encouraged Diaz to change jobs and follow what he now considers his true calling. He transferred to the Adjutant General Corps as a human resources specialist. “There’s one thing I learned as an artilleryman: Where there’s a will, there’s a way,” Diaz said. “There’s always a resource. Behind that resource is a human resources specialist.” Now assigned to the Baumholderbased 421st Multifunctional Medical Battalion, Diaz supports the personnel needs of 350 fellow Soldiers. Earlier this year, U.S. Army Europe recognized Diaz as the command’s 2012 Human Resources Soldier of the Year. On May 31, at a stateside ceremony, Diaz received an even greater recognition for his military efforts — the

Elisabeth Glass, the officer in charge of the personnel section. “He actually taught me a lot of what I know about human resources.” Now, Diaz is at another crossroads: re-enlist and hopefully move to Fort Sam Houston, Texas, or leave the Army to become a teacher and role model through the troops to teachers program. Either way, he plans to continue to provide quality customer service to the Army’s most important resource — its Soldiers. “The Army has allowed me to become not just a leader, but also a teacher, not just to my fellow Soldiers, but also to the kids back home who need a role model,” Diaz said. “Regardless of what I do, I still want to keep human resources in my future. Human resources all the way.”

All of these terms have one common denominator; without the proper training and education, they mean nothing. Years of research and development have gone into creating the elite group that is the U.S. Air Force, and even during times of reduced funding, they must keep a sharpened edge. “What it boils down to is providing clinical and organizational-wide competency,” said Lt. Col. Kim Robinson, 86th Medical Group training and education officer. “We want to ensure everyone is trained and competent to complete the duties they volunteered for.” This means keeping all units sharpened while sheathed. But, the Air Force still has missions that are consistently on display. One of the missions that is a constantly visible is aeromedical evacuation, taking wounded warriors from the battlefield in Southwest Asia, to Ramstein and then to their final destination in the U.S. “We offer many different training opportunities for our medical brothers and sisters in the (KMC), including
the aeromedical evacuation flights,” said Staff Sgt. Benny Algarin, 86th MDG director of basic life support and automatic external defibrillator training. “We provide support for training and can step in to instruct when shortages arise.” Aside from giving the training, the training and education flight allows the use of their training facilities that have “smart dummies,” which can replicate an array of medical emergencies from amputees to heart attacks. “The hands-on training provided should be as realistic as possible,” said Master Sgt. Jose Loureiro, 86th MDG emergency medical technician coordinator. “The realism allows for our medical technicians and nurses to see how a body should react in a given scenario.” Another big part of the medical training and education is ensuring medical professionals complete their annual readiness skills verification training. The RSV training ensures nurses and medical technicians are proficient in the basic to specialtyspecific skills needed. The training is required every 20 to 40 months and is determined by the medical group’s readiness flight, based on who is scheduled to deploy or when they are overdue for training. “RSV are skills necessary for med-

ZAVENTEM, Belgium — For the fourth year in a row, the 773rd Civil Support Team, 7th Civil Support Command, based in Kaiserslautern, participated in a joint training exercise alongside the Zaventem Fire Department here June 2 to 8. Among the participants at the event were the 196th Medical Support Unit, 7th CSC, and members of the 720th Explosive Ordinance Disposal Company, 16th Sustainment Brigade, 21st Theater Sustainment Command based in Baumholder, along with members of Army North from San Antonio, Texas. “Right now, the exercise is phenomenal,” said Staff Sgt. Sean A. Ripley, team leader with the 720th EOD. “Their (773rd CST) professionalism with chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear is unmatched (in) the way they conduct themselves in a chemical environment. We are learning how each unit conducts different tasks and are being able to build off of this to be able to work together in the future.” The first two days consisted of working a CBRN mitigation situation with several vehicles piled atop one another, controlling a contaminate spill and learning how to contain a flashover fire situ-
ation in an enclosed space by entering a 40-foot, ignited shipping container. “This is really awesome,” said 1st Lt. Aurora K. Williamson, a health care administrator with the 196th Medical Support Unit, 7th CSC. “This (training) is outside of our whole realm of being in a hospital or a medical setting, and it is really beneficial for us to partner with the 773rd CST and the Zaventem Fire Department and do things that we would not normally do. “The 196th MSU is supporting the 773rd CST with medical staff during this exercise and have been doing some hands on fire suppression training with the Belgium fire department along with going on some ambulance runs,” Williamson continued. At the end of the weeklong training, American, Belgian and EOD partners knew they could count on each other to support and mitigate a possible dangerous situation involving hazardous materials. “I think that a good cooperation not only depends on each unit knowing their job, but even more important, that everyone is disciplined in the workings of the other team’s operations,” said Lt. Mattias Detobel, a formation and operations manager with the Belgian fire department. “This week has been about building bridges of knowledge, partnership and not to forget the building of friendship between our fire department and the 773rd CST.”

Nissen 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs To aid customers during PCS season, the 86th Comptroller Squadron financial services office provides a customer service counter from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday in Bldg. 2108. The FSO counter provides services for temporary lodging allowance, advance pay, advance housing allowance, advance dislocation allowance, myPay pin resets and payments at the cashier’s cage for debts and advances. “Utilizing these customer counter services will ease a member’s PCS experience during our busiest time of the year,” said 2nd Lt. Emily Angell, 86th CPTS FSO flight commander. “We have added advances and TLA drop-offs to our counter to ensure these critical pay requests are processed immediately.”
Customers are encouraged to bring completed forms and necessary documents to the customer service counter. A copy of a member’s PCS orders is required for all advance payments and TLA. Additionally, customers should bring their port call date for advance DLA, DD Form 2560 for advance military pay, and AF Form 1039 with front and back side of their lease for advance housing allowance. For TLA drop offs, customers should bring AF Form 1357 (provided by the housing office), lodging receipt, statement of non-availability (if applicable) and a value-added tax form (if applicable). In addition, the explosive ordnance flight has provided superb mission support for more than 23 missions protecting very important people such as the U.S. president, secretary of state and many foreign dignitaries. The 886th has reached the end of its road but will continue on as part of the bigger picture with their new home with the 86th CES. During the farewell to what Warner considered one of the best emergency response groups, Master Sgt. Jason Higgins, 886th CES superintendent, ended the ceremony with a quote from Dr. Seuss. “Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.”

Transcom provides safe transport Story and photo by Senior Airman Caitlin Guinazu 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs All around the globe the U.S. Transportation Command’s driving force provides the U.S. with one of the most responsive strategic mobility capabilities in the world by coordinating the safe transportation of wounded, sick and injured patients back to the states. USTRANSCOM is a unified, functional combatant command that provides support to eight other combatant commands, military services, defense agencies and other government organizations. One of the major aspects of USTRANSCOM is the Movement Requirement Center in Europe, which is one of four patient requirement centers in the Air Force. Their area of responsibility includes the European Command and the African Command. “Here at the MRC, we coordinate with personnel downrange, stateside patients and with the commands, helping them figure out where their Soldiers and Sailors, Airman and Marines are going,” said Maj. Randy Snoots, USTRANSCOM patient movement clinical coordinator. The team located at Ramstein performs an estimated 23 missions per month, providing transportation for roughly 380 patients. “We not only track all the EUCOM and AFRICOM missions around here,” said Staff Sgt. Elizabeth Cardoza, USTRANSCOM patient movement controller. “We also track the Central Command’s mission patients that are coming here from downrange.

We interact with the Contingency Aeromedical Staging Facility to inform them what time the patients will be coming in, so they can pick them up and take them for monitoring.” After verifying the patient’s information and their ability to be transported, the USTRANSCOM will then move the individual to where they need to go.
“We ensure patients move from point A to point B safely,” said Capt. Eddy Cervantes, joint patient movement operations officer. “If not for us, they might end up all over the place and with all kinds of safety issues. Here at USTRANSCOM, safety is always our No. 1 priority.”

That’s where 2nd Air Postal Squadron staff steps in to help. The 2nd AIRPS is a 24/7 operation service, supporting U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa during peacetime and wartime contingencies. The Airmen at Detachment 1, 2nd AIRPS, working at Frankfurt
International Airport work behind the scenes to make sure every delivery reaches its final destination. “One nice perk about working at Det. 1 is having the privilege to work closely with the German local nationals on a day-to-day basis,” said Staff Sgt. Amanda Medley, 2nd AIRPS Det. 1 mail control activity assistant. The detachment manages mail
transportation, including monitoring hundreds of flight segments, and various trucking segments. Det. 1, 2nd AIRPS, services more than 350,000 military and Department of Defense civilians, distributing more than 35 million pounds of mail last year. “Being a geographically separated unit we have limited base support to handle personnel issues with our designated support wing,
(which is) 86th Airlift Wing at Ramstein Air Base being over an hour away,” Medley said. “To help overcome some hurdles, we have built a great partnership with our sister service at Wiesbaden Army Airfield Garrison. They provide medical care, limited housing and legal assistance.” Facilitating mail movement to and from 28 military installations and Department of State locations in Germany, they also support three other combatant commands and serve as the transfer point of mail that flows in and out of Southwest Asia and the Pacific.

areer assistance advisers help commanders and first-line supervisors in counseling enlisted personnel on re-enlistment and retraining opportunities, educate Airmen about benefits and entitlements, and help commanders, supervisors and enlisted personnel on retention activities and programs. These advisers are vital assets to
the development of each individual Airman and the Air Force. One of the many things career assistance advisers assist with is career job reservations. The CJR program was developed to control the number of first-term Airmen allowed to re-enlist in overmanned career fields. Airmen cannot re-enlist into their career field without a CJR. Career assistance advisers equip Airmen with the knowledge and guidance that is essential to each individual’s career. “There are 24 different CJR
restrained career fields this year,” said Master Sgt. Jared Moran, 86th Force Support Squadron career assistance adviser. “If you are in a career field that is CJR restrained, you have to take action immediately and come speak with a career assistance adviser.” Moran said a common misconception is that if an Airman gets an assignment when they are CJR restrained then they won’t be affected. Unfortunately, this is not true, and that Airman will still be separated if he doesn’t take action.
Airmen who are not selected for a CJR or for retraining may apply for retraining or a special duty if they are not within 120 days of their separation date. “People think they can wait it out. That’s a bad idea. They have three options at this point: retrain, special duty or separate,” said Master Sgt. Etienne Tousignant, 86th Force Support Squadron career assistance adviser. “If you are CJR restrained, coming to speak with us has to be your No. 1 priority. If it isn’t, you will get separated.”
21st TSC recognizes German nationals as honorary colonels Story by the 21st Theater Sustainment Command Maj. Gen. Aundre F. Piggee, commanding general of 21st Theater Sustainment Command, honored Mayor of Kaiserslautern Dr. Susanne Wimmer-Leonhardt and Kaiserslautern County Commissioner Paul Junker by inducting them as honorary colonels of the 21st TSC during a ceremony June 5. The ceremony, which was held on Panzer Kaserne, ended in the traditional military retreat ceremony. Junker was selected as an honorary colonel for his consistent efforts to enhance German-American friendship and integration of the military community in his county. He was the driving force behind providing English language county websites and KMC welcome information. Wimmer-Leonhardt was chosen as an honorary colonel in recognition of her unyielding support of the U.S. military community in the City of Kaiserslautern. She was integral in the formation of the German-American Law Enforcement Patrol program, a unique program in Germany. The 21st TSC has been inducting selected host nation officials since 1970. Until now, 79 distinguished local leaders have been honored with this title. Helmut Haufe, the general manager of the Theater Logistics Sustainment Center-Europe, administers the program for Piggee. Every year, the 21st TSC selects one or two host nation dignitaries from a wide range of fields, such as public administration, government, politics, business, industry, culture and sports, in appreciation of continued support to and cooperation with the 21st TSC.

‘Get it all out’ from today to Sunday by Petra Lessoing 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Kaiserslautern’s city center will be the stage for a street theater festival of its own kind today to Sunday. For the seventh year, Lebenshilfe Kaiserslautern (an association for the mentally disabled) will sponsor the event “Alles Muss Raus!” or, “Get it all out!” in cooperation with Lebenshilfe Arts and Culture, the City of Kaiserslautern and the Rheinland-Pfalz Culture Summer. More than 25 theater, artistic and music groups will perform in the streets and on squares in Kaiserslautern. About 250 disabled and non-disabled artists from Germany, France, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland and Spain will meet and celebrate together. The festival will officially open with a revue at 7:30 p.m. today in Fruchthalle, known as Kaiserslautern’s concert hall. At the same time, Lebenshilfe Kaiserslautern will start celebrations for its 50th anniversary. The revue is the only event asking for an admission fee of €5. Different groups will present a show on stage. The Blaumeier theater group will turn the place around St. Martin’s
Church (Steinstrasse) into a big picture world with actors wearing masks at 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday. The Compagnie Pipototal from France will present actors telling stories in fantasy machines and rolling objects without engines at 9 p.m. today and Saturday at Am Altenhof. The French theater group Les Krilati will show off its artistic skills at 10 p.m. today and Saturday in the grassy area next to Pfalztheater. Other groups performing throughout the day Saturday and Sunday include Rodafonio from Spain driving a fourmeter-tall bike, Theater Maatweerk from the Netherlands performing music on weird vehicles, the dance group Mimbre from Great Britain and Art Obscura from Germany rolling through the streets in artistic wheelchairs. Musical performances will feature brass music, rock and pop music as well as bamboo sounds. A children’s rock concert is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday at the stage near Stiftskirche. Being spiritually resilient without religion: an alternate perspective by Staff Sgt. Travis Edwards 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs We all have our bumps in the road. Some are minor speed humps and others are gaping potholes. Those are times where it seems there is nowhere to turn. But it isn’t about what got us there; it’s about what brought us back that counts and makes us resilient Airmen. Spiritual resiliency is about having a sense of purpose — those values that sustain the sense of wellbeing, not necessarily religion. So, how do we stay spiritually resilient without religion? For me, it wasn’t difficult. However, it wasn’t religion; it was my personal circle — my personal belief in my Air Force, my family and my friends. It’s hard to talk or even think about not being with my wife, but there were times in the first few years of our marriage where we almost threw in the towel and opted for the big D. We were in a rut — a hard one, too. It didn’t seem like we were compatible anymore, and having two children did not make the situation easier. Our commitment was being tested. Things like a messy house or dirty dishes turned to escalating verbal attacks, usually ending nowhere. Divorce seemed more and more like a viable option; if things didn’t change, it would quickly become the next step.
This is where my personal circle helped. I was fortunate enough to have an amazing crew at my first assignment at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev. Almost everyone made themselves available to talk with me, but I will never forget the one who helped me the most. Mike was our deputy chief of public affairs. He was also a mentor, a friend and a great listener. He allowed me to talk to him and put everything on the table. Mike was no stranger to being an Airman, closing in on 35 years in the service when we first met. After enduring a few days of my frustration, Mike said to me, “Travis, you need to stop talking to me about this, and both of you need to see a counselor.” Mike was more known for his soft-spoken voice and daily rants on how the Horde kept killing his gnome hunter in online game play. But this day, I heard him very clearly; he was direct, yet compassionate. My wife and I used a service provided by our Air Force family and made it to life skills, now mental health, and scheduled an appointment. After a year
of bi-weekly sessions, we were doing better than ever and just celebrated our ninth anniversary on Valentine’s Day. Without my friends and mentors there to help push me in the right direction, I don’t think this would have been possible. I found my spiritual resiliency is catalyzed by the opportunities and people surrounding me. My friends help me unwind and listen to me after a stressful work week, and my coworkers offer that helping Courtesy photo hand, pen and shoulder when I need it. This is truly the best I’ve been in my life. I have Mike to thank for his selfless service in ensuring I am a well-rounded, resilient Airman — even before the days of Air Force resiliency. My personal circle isn’t a personal quality per se, but they are the things I choose to let into my life, things that I get to choose personally, things sans religion. These are the things I believe in and have unwavering faith toward. Every Airman needs to find their own beliefs and stick to them until the point at which they evolve and grow.

A blood drive was held Tuesday near the Ramstein Southside Fitness Center. The blood drive was hosted by the Armed Services Blood Program and put together by the 352nd Network Warfare Squadron, Detachment 1. Collecting only from within the military community, the ASBP keeps all donated blood for use within the extended military family. “It’s extremely important,” said Emily Hayes, an American Red Cross worker. “It’s our part to help, trying to do the best for our people who are serving.” Parallel to Ramstein’s mission of providing combat airlifts and operating the Air Force’s premier installation to enable and assure strategic capabilities worldwide, the ASBP aims to be an outstanding quality, cost effective blood system providing blood products and services wherever and whenever needed. “I donate as often as I can,” said Staff Sgt. U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern Library readers of all ages can explore a world of book choices around the theme “Have Book, Will Travel.” The program will run six weeks with open enrollment during the summer with programs for infants through adults. “Last summer, the Department of Defense program set a new reading record: more than 13.2 million minutes spent reading, and USAGK Library patrons were a big part of that success. Each year the program is making a bigger impact on families’ lives,” said USAGK Library Director Shawn FriendBegin. “This year’s theme will really resonate with our families, who really are on the move, and a book can be a safe and comforting place as they travel the world.” Decades of research shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of the summer. Summer reading programs can help offset this loss, because studies also indicate students who read recreationally out-performed those who didn’t. Students read more when they can choose materials based on their own interests. “(The) summer reading program was a big success for my kids,” said one happy parent at the conclusion of last year’s USAGK program. Sponsored by the DOD with program content developed by iREAD, “Have Book, Will Travel” will reach thousands of families. The theme is brought to life by illustrators Anna Dewdney (of the “Llama Llama” series), Terri Murphy and Samantha Schroeder. Resource guides for the program were developed by librarians for librarians to motivate children to read. This year marks the fourth year in which 200 base and installation libraries will participate in the shared summer reading program. “Summer reading programs are valuable not only in building a lifelong love of reading, but as a means for families and children to spend time together, an especially important aspect for military families,” FriendBegin said. Two paws up for the vet clinic Story and photo by Airman 1st Class Hailey Haux 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Taking care of those four-legged family members is what the Public Health Command District-Northern Europe, Dog Center Europe, vet clinic on Pulaski Barracks does best. “We have 19 different veterinary clinics throughout the region,” said Maj. Kent Vince, Dog Center Europe director. “We also serve as a referral hospital for any dogs coming from the Central Command and Africa Command areas of operation, so we routinely receive injured military working dogs from Afghanistan and the Middle East.” The surgical department provides a variety of surgical procedures for the military working dogs. “The job we have here is very unique as a veterinary surgeon, getting the opportunity to take care of these world-class animals that are going downrange saving lives,” Vince said. “It’s an honor for us to provide that high-level care to those dogs and dog handlers whom those dogs mean so much to.” In addition to providing care to the military working dogs, the vet clinic also provides care to pets of service members stationed here. “We do vaccinations, health certificates, pet passports, in-house blood work, spays and neuters, and much more,” said Sgt. John Snook, PHCD-NE, DCE NCOIC of clinical operations. “We also try to focus on controlling any disease that may be around and to not have them spread further.” The biggest issue here, especial-

Some people don’t have children and their pets are their children, so we take good care of those family members.” With more than 40 clients a day and 300 to 400 vaccinations in a month, making it the second busiest vet facility overseas, the vet clinic can be a busy place. “Clients arriving late is an ongoing issue, and a lot of times it’s not the client’s fault,” Snook said. “Sometimes gates are closed, so we advise people to plan on arriving 15 minutes early, and if they are late expect to possibly be rescheduled.” Even being busy on a day-today basis, members of the vet
clinic find joy in what they do. “You can’t go around this clinic without seeing some of the cutest dogs,” Snook said. “They have their own attitudes and personalities; the best part is they don’t judge you. If you have a bad day, they don’t care.” As soon as someone gets here or gets a pet, the first step should be to enroll the pet at the vet clinic. “They shouldn’t wait until their pets’ vaccinations are due,” Snook said. “Enrollment has to be done before their pet is seen at our clinic.” The best time to enroll pets is Thursdays between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. During lunch any day is a good time to pick up medications or prescription food. isitors of Lichtenberg Castle near Kusel will learn everything about herbs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Under the motto “Herbal secrets at Lichtenberg Castle,” the castle will offer guided tours of the medieval herbal garden, herbal hikes, and lectures and presentations. Numerous vendors will present a wide range of merchandise having to do with herbs such as books, schnaps and liquor, teas, spices, oil, vinegar, mustard and marmalade. Shoppers will also have a choice of herbal pillows, wreaths, ceramic items, brooms, home-made goat cheese and more. Cooks of the Culinary County Road will show off their cooking skills
and create fine menus using herbs. Together with the Kusel Butchers’ Guild, they will offer delicacies including bratwurst and musician’s land steaks. Cakes and coffee will be served as well. While exploring herbal secrets at the market, organizers suggest visitors also visit the two museums located in the castle area: the Musicians County Museum and Geoskop, the primeval world museum. Shoppers savor international flair at garrison summer bazaar Story and photos by Dijon Rolle U.S. Army Garrison Kaiserslautern Public Affairs Polish pottery, blueberry potpourri, Persian rugs, castiron pots, chocolates, candied peanuts and more greeted visitors venturing to the garrison’s annual summer bazaar. Shoppers and strollers flooded the special events warehouse to purchase goods from some 75 vendors from around the world during the event, held from June 7 to 9 on Rhine Ordnance Barracks. Shopper Melody Arnold said she especially enjoyed combing through the vast array of international items
brought in for the bazaar. Arnold and her husband lived in the KMC for a little less than a year and said this is their third bazaar. “It’s a very unique opportunity to see things from all over the world and I can’t actually travel to them so it’s great that they brought them to us,” Arnold said. “I got a basket, a colander and I’ve tasted different jellies, a little bit of wine, a little cheese and I love it all.” One of the most popular booths at the bazaar is the Old Dutch Cheese Company, where vendor Jacobina Kosman lined her table with samples of 25 different types of gouda cheese, from spicy jalapeño to a bright green

She and her husband hail from Holland and have traveled the bazaar circuit for nearly 25 years. “It started in the early years when we were invited to an event in the Netherlands and then you get invited to other ones,” Kosman said. “My husband and I do it together and we just liked it and we wanted to keep coming.” Many customers already know the Kosmans and their cheese. The couple is happy to serve the community, Jacobina Kosman said. That’s good news for Tatia Kruegar, budget assistant for Morale, Welfare and Recreation Kaiserslautern Financial Management. Kruegar and an army of workers labor around the clock to ensure each bazaar goes as smoothly as possible from start to finish. The team handles everything from logistics to distributing bunches of bright helium balloons to some of the younger stroller-bound “shoppers.” “We do this for the Soldiers and the KMC military families that may not have the opportunity to travel to these locations,” Kruegar said. “A lot of our vendors come from outside of Germany. We have Italian vendors here, Belgian

vendors and these are things that are not part of the local setting around Kaiserslautern. It brings it all together in one central place where KMC members can shop.”

Sleeping Beauty is crowned The village of Dörrenbach hosts a village fest with music, dances and plays to crown the new Sleeping Beauty and say goodbye to the former one Saturday and Sunday. Celebrations start at noon Saturday. The crowning, supported by the Dörrenbacher dwarfs, takes place at 5 p.m. The center of the village will turn into a medieval area with craftsmanship presentations, musicians, jugglers and food specialties. Dörrenbach, also known as Sleeping Beauty of the Pfalz, is a wine village west of Bad Bergzabern.

Venture Crew 42 offers unique opportunities by Capt. Craig Towlson 435th Air Ground Operations Wing Living in Europe offers an abundance of opportunities not only to travel, but to test a person’s limits, meet new friends and make a difference. That’s just what K-Town’s Venture Crew 42 is all about. This Boy Scouts of America affiliated organization focuses on adventurous activities, such as hiking, camping, white water rafting, skiing and snowboarding. Additionally, it teaches lifelong life skills, such as leadership development, public speaking, interviewing and mentoring. It is made up of young men and women 14 to 20 years old. The program of events is created and led by the youth members and guided by adult advisers. Some youth members include high school students from Kaiserslautern as well as Airmen who are less than 21 years old. The advisers, who assist the youth, include several lieutenants and Airmen from local units. Crewmember Heather Tooth has been with the group for more than a year and has taken advantage of leadership development, team building and high adventure opportunities. She said two of her favorite activities so far are Kodiak, a leadership camp in Garmisch, and Intercamp, a European Scouting camp held this year near Maastricht, the Netherlands. “(Kodiak is) a weeklong leadership camp. Each day we learned a new component of leadership and did an activity to go along with it. My favorite activity was the white water rafting; it helped us learn the concept of teamwork, because if we didn’t all

work together, we could end up tipping the raft in the rapids,” Tooth said. “We also did other fun activities like a hike, biking, a high ropes course and a service project.” Crew president Brendan Towlson has been with the group since it initially formed in 2012. He recently returned from a weekend of camping at Intercamp, having interacted with more than 3,000 Scouts from across Europe. The best part was the food that was prepared by the venturers. The food is an incentive at any camping event, Towlson said. Another fun and unique part of Intercamp was that the crew got to swap gear, patches and neck-

Rock climbing
The Child, Youth and School Services EDGE! program is offering a rock climbing course for children and youth, every Tuesday and Thursday until June 27 and from Aug. 6 to 29 at Ramstein Outdoor Recreation inside the Kaiserslautern Military Community Center. Lessons will be offered in

Not many American children get the opportunity to interact with German, Dutch, Polish and Czech youth, and that’s something that can have lasting impressions for those Scouting in Europe. “Some of my best European experiences have been camping and exploring with the crew,” Towlson said. “This is a great program that I think any young person would enjoy.” In their free time, besides camping, members of the crew check out local restaurants and go bowling and rock climbing.
