Why BTV?

Many folks flying through BTV wonder about the airport’s three-letter location identifier. Vermont’s postal code is VT, so why isn’t it BVT? That’s especially baffling, as BVT isn’t already used by another airport. Here’s a little history. Airport codes arose in the 1930s. The early ones simply copied the two-letter designations used by the National Weather Service, which typically sets up weather-data stations at airfields. But as commercial aviation expanded, the federal government switched to the threeJust minutes from the airport! letter system, which offered thousands more combinations. Some airports simply added an X to their original two-letter abbreviations, and those codes stuck. Hence LAX (Los Angeles International) and PDX (Portland International). Today, many of the threeContinental Breakfast | Fitness Center | Indoor & Outdoor Pools letter codes still make sense. Others, such as Chicago’s O’Hare (ORD), are puzzling until you learn the airport’s history: Prior to 1949, O’Hare was named Orchard Field. But the moniker is far preferable to that of the Sioux Gateway Airport in Sioux City, Iowa (SUX), Brazil’s 1076 Williston Road, South Burlington, VT Poços de Caldas Airport (POO), Perm International Airport in Russia 802.863.1125 | www.bestwesternburlingtonvt.com (PEE) or Butler Memorial Airport in Missouri (BUM). Pourquoi BTV?
Bien des voyageurs qui passent par BTV s’interrogent sur la signification de cet indicatif à trois lettres. Au Vermont, le code postal est VT… alors pourquoi ne dit-on pas BVT? Il y a lieu de se poser la question, puisqu’aucun autre aéroport n’utilise le sigle BVT. Un peu d’histoire... C’est dans les années 1930 que les indicatifs d’aéroport ont vu le jour. À l’origine, il s’agissait des mêmes sigles à deux lettres que ceux du National Weather Service, qui exploitait des postes météorologiques sur les terrains d’aviation. Mais avec l’essor de l’aviation commerciale, le gouvernement fédéral est passé au système à trois lettres, qui offrait beaucoup plus de combinaisons. Certains aéroports ont simplement greffé un X à leur sigle initial à deux lettres, et ces codes leur sont restés. D’où les indicatifs LAX (aéroport international de Los Angeles) et PDX (aéroport international de Portland). ermont’s autumn colors are famous — and all the more spectacular when seen from above. At higher elevations, the sweeping views of orange, red and yellow spreading over the landscape are downright dramatic. Happily, finding a hunk of granite on which to perch and take in the fiery foliage display needn’t take all day. Plenty of short- to medium-distance hikes close to Burlington will leave travelers on tight schedules with their calves tingling and senses replete. Read on to learn about three prime peaks within an hour’s drive. For many more options, download Vermont’s free Trail Finder app (trailfinder.info) for 200-plus trail maps at your fingertips. Or visit the Green Mountain Club headquarters (greenmountainclub. org) in nearby Waterbury to speak to a local expert and learn about guided outings. Remember to pack extra layers, plenty of water and a snack — perhaps a hunk of sharp cheddar and a just-picked Vermont McIntosh apple. Then go out and bag that view.

35 minutes from Burlington Difficulty: Easy This 968-foot peak, just south of Burlington, is popular with locals and tourists alike. And for good reason: The three-quarter-mile ascent is steep enough to make you break a sweat and burn off the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, yet short enough (30 to 60 minutes) that it may feel almost like cheating once you attain the views at the top. Vistas this beautiful usually require more huffing and puffing. Trails circle the summit, allowing hikers to take in a 360-degree panorama. The best vantage point is to the west. Farmland creeps to the shores of Lake Champlain, a 120-mile-long slash of blue with New York’s Adirondacks on the other side. Near here, the lake drops to its deepest point, 400 feet, and the looming mountains punch into the sky, forming a nightly cradle for the setting sun. A helpful marker at one of the lookouts identifies 5,343-foot Mt. Marcy, New York’s highest peak, and her smaller cousins. Drink in the view while eating lunch at one of the picnic tables, and watch for migrating hawks and Canada geese. Cars are allowed up the twisting road until the gate closes in late October, so those with limited mobility can drive, or stroll up the pavement, while others in their party hike. Et pour cause : l’ascension de 1,2 kilomètre est suffisamment rude pour vous faire perdre les calories ingérées chez Ben & Jerry’s, mais suffisamment courte (de 30 à 60 minutes) pour que vous ayez l’impression de ne pas mériter une aussi belle vue. Les panoramas aussi somptueux exigent habituellement un effort plus grand! Les sentiers font le tour du sommet, ce qui permet aux randonneurs de jouir d’une vue à 360 degrés. Le meilleur poste d’observation se situe à l’ouest, là où les terres agricoles se déploient jusqu’aux rives du lac Champlain, le long d’une bande bleue de 193 km avec comme toile de fond les Adirondacks dans l’État de New York. Près d’ici, le lac atteint sa profondeur maximale, soit 122 mètres, et les majestueuses montagnes se dressent à l’horizon, offrant un écrin idéal au soleil couchant. À l’un des belvédères, un écriteau identifie le mont Marcy, plus haut sommet de l’État de New York culminant à 1 629 mètres, ainsi que ses acolytes moins élevés. Absorbez la vue tout en savourant votre lunch à l’une des tables de pique-nique, et soyez à l’affût des faucons et des outardes en migration. Les voitures peuvent circuler sur la route sinueuse jusqu’à la fermeture des portes, à la fin d’octobre. Les personnes à mobilité réduite peuvent ainsi rejoindre leurs amis randonneurs au sommet grâce à cette voie pavée. Les chiens sont permis, mais doivent être tenus en laisse. Snake Mountain
À 55 minutes de Burlington Niveau de difficulté : modéré C’est sur Snake Mountain, une montagne particulière à l’allure serpentine située dans le comté d’Addison, que se trouvait autrefois le Grand View Hotel. Établi en 1870, l’établissement fut détruit par un incendie, mais son héritage se poursuit. À preuve, les gens du coin surnomment toujours « Grand View » l’observatoire de la montagne. Les randonneurs peuvent accéder au sommet, qui culmine à 392 mètres, par la vieille route carrossable. Hunger Mountain
Hotel. Opened in 1870, the inn later burned down, but its legacy remains — locals still call the mountain’s overlook the “Grand View.” And walkers follow the old stagecoach road to the top of the 1,287-foot peak. The 3.6-mile hike takes about two hours and goes up and down, past beech trees with smooth gray bark and ferns dappled with forest light. The carriage road can become muddy after a rain, but it’s a relatively wide, smooth path. Students from nearby Middlebury College and multigenerational families alike traverse this route to snap group shots at the summit’s ledge, which offers 180-degree views of cornfields, silos, Lake Champlain — and beyond. Peregrine falcons sometimes shoot past. Meanwhile, geology students can muse on the ancient history of Snake Mountain, once an island poking from the inland Champlain Sea in the days when whales, rather than lake trout, swam the waters. Hunger Mountain
45 minutes from Burlington Difficulty: Advanced For a slightly longer hike, this peak in the Worcester Range near Waterbury Center promises a lovely half-day romp featuring forest, cascading water and rock-wall scrambles. Even in September, hikers will often find wild blueberries to sample. Year-round, the Worcesters boast big veins of quartz that look like snow. The trip up and down the west side of the 3,539-foot mountain runs about four miles and takes about four hours, not counting the time one should allow at the bald summit to enjoy the views of neighboring ranges. These include the ridgeline of Mt. Mansfield, Vermont’s tallest peak. Take a minute to identify the features of its distinguished face: the forehead at the southern end, then the nose, chin and Adam’s apple. To the east, New Hampshire’s Presidential Range comes into view on clear days. After descending, stop on the way home at the nearby Cold Hollow Cider Mill for a warm cider doughnut. You’ve earned it. Prenez un moment pour en observer les traits distinctifs : le front, au sud, puis le nez, le menton et la pomme d’Adam. À l’est, le chaînon Presidential, dans le New Hampshire, se dévoile par temps clair. Après être redescendu, sur le chemin du retour à la maison, faites un arrêt à la Cold Hollow Cider Mill pour déguster un beignet au cidre encore chaud. Vous l’avez mérité. Vermont yields a bumper crop of hard ciders | Une récolte exceptionnelle de cidres du Vermont By KEN PICARD
I
n recent years, Vermont’s finely crafted and locally produced alcoholic beverages have been increasingly easy to swallow. The state’s budding wine, craft beer and distilled-spirits industries have all taken off. But no local drink has roots that run deeper than hard cider. From the 1700s until well into the 20th century, nearly every Vermont farm had an apple orchard, whose fruit was used primarily for making hard cider and brandy. Unlike grapes, hops, and other fruits and grains that are poorly suited to the state’s harsh winters, apples thrive in this northern New England climate. Yet, as recently as a decade ago, Vermont had only one commercial cider manufacturer: Woodchuck Hard Cider of Middlebury. (In these parts, “cider” generally refers to the fermented alcoholic beverage, while “sweet cider” refers to the brown, unfiltered nonalcoholic drink.) Today, thanks in part to Vermont’s locavore movement and the growing popularity of gluten-free diets, the state boasts 15 cider makers, most of which got their start in the past five years. Despite their newness, Vermont cideries are already producing impressive, award-winning ciders — fast earning the state a reputation as the “Napa Valley of Hard Cider.” While you’re here, be sure to take a bite.

Les industries en plein essor du vin, de la bière artisanale et des eaux-de-vie distillées se portent à merveille dans l’État, mais aucune boisson locale n’a de racines aussi profondes que le cidre. Entre le 18e siècle et le milieu du 20e siècle, pratiquement toutes les fermes du Vermont avaient un verger, dont les fruits servaient principalement à fabriquer du cidre et du brandy. Contrairement aux raisins, au houblon et aux autres fruits et céréales qui sont mal adaptés aux rudes hivers du Vermont, les pommes s’épanouissent dans le climat nordique de la Nouvelle-Angleterre. Cela dit, il y a aussi peu qu’une dizaine d’années, le Vermont ne comptait qu’une seule cidrerie commerciale, la Woodchuck Hard Cider, à Middlebury. (Dans la région, on fait la distinction entre hard cider, qui désigne la boisson alcoolisée fermentée, et sweet cider, la version non filtrée et non alcoolisée.) Aujourd’hui, en partie grâce au mouvement locavore et à la popularité croissante des régimes sans gluten, on dénombre 15 cidreries dans l’État, dont la plupart ont démarré dans les cinq dernières années. Malgré leur nouveauté, les cidreries du Vermont produisent déjà des cidres impressionnants, qui remportent des prix et ont rapidement valu à l’État la réputation de « Napa Valley du cidre ». Passer au Vermont sans y goûter serait un péché!

In 1991, when amateur winemaker Greg Failing began experimenting with cider recipes in his Proctorsville garage, no one was making cider commercially. Today, Failing is the original cider maker at Woodchuck, the second largest cider manufacturer in the United States (behind Samuel Adams’ Angry Orchard), producing about 6.8 million gallons annually. In 2013, the company purchased 40 percent of the state’s total processed fruit. If Woodchuck bought every apple grown in Vermont, the juice would barely fill a third of its fermentation tanks. Despite its industrial scale, Woodchuck has never lost sight of its roots. Its cider makers work closely with local orchards and nascent cideries to promote the state’s growing cider industry. In Middlebury, visitors can take a self-guided tour of Woodchuck’s impressive $34 million cider house and bottling plant, read about its history, and then sample nearly two dozen ever-changing ciders in its beautifully appointed tasting room and gift shop. This time of year, Woodchuck’s Fall Harvest and Winter Chill are favorites, as is its Private Reserve Pumpkin. Other seasonal and limited varieties include Cheeky Cherry, Chocolate Raspberry, Ginger and Smoked Apple. Woodchuck is a family-friendly destination where both the seasoned cider connoisseur and those new to the beverage can discover why Vermont-made cider is creating a national buzz.

Citizen Cider
316 Pine St., Burlington, citizencider.com Citizen Cider is proof positive that, in Vermont and elsewhere, craft cider can now compete head-to-head with the nation’s best craft beers. The cidery was launched in fall 2011 by three friends who persuaded the owners of Middlebury’s Happy Valley Orchard to give them 5,000 gallons of apple juice to convert into hard cider. Those fellas’ hard work and determination paid off. In 2014 and 2015, Vermonters voted Citizen Cider the state’s best hard cider; it’s on track to produce 250,000 gallons this year. Located in the heart of Burlington’s South End Arts District, Citizen Cider reflects the neighborhood’s young, hip and über-creative ethos. The tasting room has a full kitchen for appetizers and meals, with outdoor seating on a large, raised wooden deck. Occasionally there’s live music. But cider remains the main attraction. “Flights,” or sampling trays, allow patrons to try five of the 10 ciders on tap daily. Among the possibilities are Unified Press, Citizen Cider’s off-dry, light and crisp flagship variety; Wit’s Up, made with Belgian beer yeast; the Dirty Mayor, a slightly sweeter cider infused with ginger and lemon peel; and bRosé, fermented with local blueberries. The first three are also sold in Citizen’s signature silver aluminum cans. While you’re there, sample the menu of ciderinspired edibles, including the Citizen Burger dressed with cider cheese, cider mustard and cider caramelized onions; the cider-braised barbecue brisket sandwich; and moules frites with cider-steamed Hollander mussels. All are unique tastes of Burlington.

Cette cidrerie a été établie à l’automne 2011 par trois amis, qui avaient persuadé les propriétaires du verger Happy Valley, à Middlebury, de leur donner près de 20 000 litres de jus de pomme afin de le transformer en cidre. Côté dégustation, on utilise de petites palettes pour servir aux clients cinq des dix cidres en fût offerts quotidiennement, dont le Unified Press, produit vedette de Citizen Cider, un cidre demi-sec au goût léger et vif, le Wit’s Up, fait de levure de bière belge, le Dirty Mayor, légèrement plus doux, infusé de gingembre et de zeste de citron, ainsi que le bRosé, fermenté avec des bleuets de la région. Les trois premiers sont également vendus dans des canettes d’aluminium, signature de Citizen. Stowe Cider
1815 Pucker St., Stowe, stowecider.com One of the newer arrivals on Vermont’s cider scene, Stowe Cider is worth a visit for anyone passing through Stowe. The cidery, which opened only two years ago, is located along Route 100 in a former grocery stand. It’s already making a big name for itself in the cider world and is primed to produce 30,000 gallons in 2015 — up from just 10,000 gallons a year ago. Stowe Cider currently produces 15 different ciders, most of which are European-style — dry or off-dry, with tart, crisp flavors — and made using locally grown apples and other ingredients such as strawberries, blueberries, mint, juniper and hot peppers. While the cidery offers no tour, virtually every aspect of production is visible as one steps through the door. That includes the racks of former bourbon barrels — provided by Smugglers’ Notch Distillery, located just over the mountain pass in Jeffersonville — that are used to make a limited-release, barrel-aged cider. For $6, visitors can taste any four ciders available on tap and take home the glass. Also on display is a large glass fermentation flask that head cider maker Mark Ray uses to concoct new recipes. One of the best aspects of visiting Stowe Cider is the opportunity to sample products created in the last day or two, some of them so experimental that they haven’t even been named. Accordingly, every visit to the cidery is different; beyond its three flagship ciders, visitors will always find something fresh to taste. Be sure to take home a bottle or growler, as Stowe Cider is currently sold only in Vermont. Pour 6 $, les visiteurs peuvent goûter l’un des quatre cidres en fût et rapporter le verre à la maison. Boyden Valley Winery & Spirits may be one of the most scenic places in Vermont to sample cider — or wine or apple liqueur, all made right there on the 1,000-acre family farm. Located in the picturesque Lamoille River Valley, not far from Smugglers’ Notch, the farm has been in the Boyden family for five generations. Their attachment to the land shines through wherever you look. A restored 1875 carriage barn now serves as the tasting room and store. For $10, guests can sample seven of Boyden’s adult beverages, including its Vermont Ice Hard Cider; Double Bourbon Cider; the off-dry to semi-sweet Royale Cider; and the new Cran-Bog Cider, made from locally grown cranberries. All are available in flip-top bottles or in “growlettes.” Boyden’s four hard ciders are sparkling, crisp, mostly dry or semi-dry, and made from McIntosh, Empire and Northern Spy apples grown in southern Vermont. Boyden also produces more than a dozen wines and two cream liqueurs: Vermont Ice Apple Crème and Vermont Ice Maple Crème. While you’re there, order a French gourmet cheese plate and grab a table outside to bask in great views of the Green Mountains. Tours of the tank and barrel room are available twice daily, but call ahead to confirm. During warmer months, try a guided trip to the winery down the scenic Lamoille River with Vermont Canoe & Kayak, which includes the winery tour and tasting. very September, the red curtain parts at Burlington’s historic downtown theater, ushering in a new season of carefully curated world-class acts. This year’s playbill is as diverse as ever, encompassing Broadway tours, classical ballet, Inuit throat singing and improvised comedy. Also worth noting are three Flynn Center commissions, including a dance about airport intimacy by Chicago’s Lucky Plush Productions (October 3) and a collaborative theater work, Transitions…, created by local playwright Seth Jarvis (November 20 to 22). Also among the performances coming to the stage this fall: Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie, presented by Vermont’s Weston Playhouse (September 11); Grammy Award winner and country music pioneer Dwight Yoakam (September 17); Bullets Over Broadway, a musical comedy about showbiz (October 22); and a groundbreaking tap-dance piece by New York’s Dorrance Dance (October 29). urlington City Arts curates art exhibits in three areas of the airport: the Skyway, the area above the escalator and the walls facing security for Gates 1-8. Whether you’ve arrived early for a flight or are waiting to pick up passengers, do take the time to look around! In September and October, the Gates area features Ken Russack’s plein-air paintings of both urban and pastoral scenes. In the Skyway, self-taught painter Bruce Conklin presents rural views of Vermont influenced by the impressionist movement. Starting in November, Cameron Schmitz’s representational works, painted directly from local landscapes, are on view in the Gates. Phil Laughlin’s oil paintings of the Champlain Valley and other New England locales hang in the Skyway. For all three months, Lee Garrison’s abstract paintings of flowers, grasses and waters can be seen above the escalator. If you’re going up, be sure to turn around and look at the wall behind you. But watch your step! All of these artists live in or have spent time in Vermont. Please enjoy examples of their work at the airport and on their individual websites. U
nless you’re seated on the starboard side of a plane as it descends onto BTV’s runway, you probably won’t notice Heritage Aviation, just southeast of the airport terminal. It’s not small — its two hangars total about 46,000 square feet — but the buildings are blocky and nondescript. You’d never guess that its services keep the airport moving. In addition to offering a full-service mini terminal for about 25 small planes daily (complete with lounges, a full kitchen and a Ping-Pong table), Heritage is a fixed-based operator servicing all of the airport’s commercial flights. That means fueling about 25 planes a day, which adds up to about half a million gallons of fuel every month. Heritage employees de-ice each of those planes, too, in the colder months. All told, company technicians contribute more than 1,500 hours of maintenance at BTV every month. Carol Betz, Heritage’s director of finance, joined the company in 2011. She met up with BTV on the main building’s “green roof” to explain just how vital Heritage is to the airport’s operations. Heritage flies under the radar of most commercial travelers. What kinds of services do you offer that they don’t know about? I don’t think most passengers realize that we have a customs office here. For certain flights from Canada or Europe — the ones that arrange to come here specifically for ski season or the fall foliage — those travelers need to clear customs. All of that is arranged by us and BTV. We also arrange for transportation off-site. We can coordinate with somebody who comes in on a charter plane that has a mechanical problem. We might coordinate with BTV about how to get them on the next commercial flight, if necessary. We also pump a lot of gallons of airplane fuel. The airlines own their own fuel, but we bring it in and take account of the inventory, and we order for the airlines every day.
