E-cigarettes and Tobacco Use An interesting new article appeared in the Washington Post recently. The article looks into the relationship between e-cigarettes and tobacco use based upon a new CDC report. According to the Post article: “The results show that 43.9 percent of sixth- through 12th-graders who had used e-cigarettes said they intended to light up conventional cigarettes over the next year, compared with 21.5 percent of youth who had

never used the electronic nicotine delivery systems. Overall, more than 263,000 adolescents who had never smoked before used e-cigarettes in 2013, up from 79,000 in 2011, the CDC reported in a study in the journal Nicotine and Tobacco Research.” One of the main debates over e-cigarettes is whether they encourage cigarette use or help current smokers to reduce or even cease smoking. But, there is

increasing concern over the marketing of e-cigarettes to teenagers. According to the CDC press release: “There is evidence that nicotine’s adverse effects on adolescent brain development could result in lasting deficits in cognitive function. Nicotine is highly addictive.” Washington Post article. CDC Press Release.

Recent Happenings at NPRC We not only keep stock on older items but we also add new items to our clearinghouse on a frequent basis. Although many new items are electronic only and available from other sources, we strive to keep an up-to-date inventory from many different vendors in the prevention field, health field, addiction treatment and other related fields. If an item seems to be a good fit for our clearinghouse but

it is not clearly in the public domain, we contact the publisher, or distributor, to obtain reprint rights. In so doing, we include items that may not be easily accessible. We want to provide our patrons with an efficient method of obtaining what they need. Some examples of new materials in the clearing house: 2419 Motivation for Change (English Transcript)
