A Note From Owen E Q U I P M E N T

July 1, 2016

To Our Valued Friends & Customers... Welcome to the wheat harvest edition of our Flyer. It is hard to believe it is that time of year already. As I have driven around our area recently, it is apparent that we have an above-average crop in the making. I hope the weather allows you to get this bountiful crop in the bin. The focus of this edition of the Flyer is “innovation” and how 21st Century Equipment can help you leverage these advancements to help you take advantage of them in your farming or ranching operation. When it comes to innovation, it is often useful to look outside of agriculture and see how other companies have used innovative solutions to be “best in class” operators because today, no one can afford to be average. We often ask ourselves if we can improve our business performance by evaluating what the very best companies in any particular category are doing to be so outstanding. For example, if we are looking for “best practices for fuel efficiency”, we might end up looking at FedEx or UPS... sure different business models, but what can we learn by studying their processes? Anyway, you get the idea. On June 8th, we announced to our local customers and employees our intention to close our Akron, Colorado location at the conclusion of wheat harvest and consolidate those operations into our Yuma, Colorado location. To accomplish this, a significant expansion and remodel of the Yuma location has been undertaken. Additionally, all Akron employees have been offered positions at the Yuma location. This was a difficult decision for us, but we believe that selling the Akron location and re-investing the proceeds (and then some) in Yuma, will ultimately allow us to provide higher levels of service and support to all customers in that area. This will be the last Flyer before the start of this year’s county fairs. As such, we want to wish all of our 4H and FFA exhibitors the best of luck with your various projects this year. I would personally like to thank all of you that support 4H and FFA as sponsors, advisors and leaders. These two organizations are as strong as ever and they remain an important family tradition in the rural life-style we all enjoy. In closing, I wish all of our wheat growers, a safe and bountiful harvest... same to our hay and forage producers. As we move into this busiest time of the year, please keep the safety of yourself and others in mind. As always, I sincerely THANK YOU for your business. We know you have a choice and we thank you for choosing 21st Century Equipment. Sincerely,

Owen Palm President/CEO

Feature Story & Events Nine Tech Students Earn Scholarships!

Nine 21st Century Equipment Tech Students have earned an astonishing $9000.00 in scholarship money from the Iowa-Nebraska Equipment Dealers Association (I-NEDA). In addition 21st Century Equipment matches the dollar amount given to each student by the I-NEDA, bringing the total each student takes home from receiving this scholarship to $2000.00. The following students will receive $2000.00 each; Adolfo Ortega, Christian Montes, Dylan Schneider, Javier Rojo, Nicolas Wilms, Noah Lutkehus, Roger Roach, Roy Adams, and Sergio Almanza Jr. Established in 2008 to address the shortage of dealership personnel, the I-NEDA Matching Scholarship Program helps members attract and nurture local talent aspiring toward management, technical, sales or administrative positions within a dealership. Since its launch. I-NEDA’s “dealer-driven” program has awarded 287 scholarships totaling $375,500 to applicants who have enrolled as full-time students in a “dealer-approved” higher education curriculum. Scholarships are then renewable for each subsequent year of the student’s educational program, as long as the student remains eligible and the sponsoring dealership principal agrees to participate with matching funds. Established in 1993, the Iowa-Nebraska Equipment Dealers Assoc. represents dealers and distributors of agricultural, construction and outdoor power equipment in both Iowa and Nebraska. 21st Century Equipment is honored to have these young individuals taking the first step to become part of a progressive agricultural dealership. We wish these students the best of luck in their 2016-2017 school year.

Innovate to elevate.

“New and innovative doesn’t automatically mean ‘better’.” Innovation needs to lead to elevation of business results. New ideas, new equipment, and new technologies must raise the bar in terms of improved performance, profitability, cash flow, risk management, or results. Innovation needs to solve problems, save money and time, or make you an even better producer. Innovation needs to elevate your expectations about your operation, and we can help you achieve the results you expect. Innovation needs to solve problems, save money and time, or make you an even better farmer. Innovation needs to elevate your expectations about your operation. At 21st Century Equipment, we bring you the latest innovations. But we also help you leverage these advancements to your advantage. Here are just a few examples: Today’s planters can get seed in the ground more quickly and elevate your chances for success when the spring planting window is tight. The flotation of the John Deere 9RX can help get field work done with less compaction, sometimes when a standard-wheel unit can’t run. Instead of being at the mercy of a third-party spraying service— or relying on an undependable spray coupe—the new compact John Deere sprayer can put you in control of managing your crop in a timely manner. Data collection and management elevate your understanding of your farm, and your ability to make informed decisions that have a direct impact on yield and your bottom line. Innovation can simply be a new way of looking at an old problem or asking curious questions that lead to “a-ha” moments that change the way you farm. We encourage our employees to think innovatively and creatively about their jobs and how they can continually elevate their performance to the benefit of our customers. It’s easy to get excited about the latest innovation or technology because it’s new and different. But it’s critically important to ask one very simple question: “So what?” At 21st Century Equipment, our job is to ensure that the answer to that simple question includes powerful ways in which that innovation elevates your success.

Combine Set-up Tips Help Avoid Harvest Headaches & Hassles.

If you need proof that time flies, consider that wheat harvest is only a few weeks away. That means it’s time to get your combine harvest-ready. Here are a few tips to help you avoid headaches and hassles during harvest. Check the condition of the U-joints and ensure that oil levels are adequate throughout the machine. Perform all necessary lubrication and conduct a complete visual inspection of the machine. Check all chains and belts. If you see any cracking or glazing on belts, replace them. A little time and a few dollars right now are far preferable to a failure when harvest is in full swing. Verify that you have the correct chaffer and sieves installed. Generally, standard sieves perform better on wheat than do deep tooth sieves. Temperatures will be rising, so make sure your air conditioning system is ready to handle the heat. Blow out the radiator and condenser and clean all air filters. (This applies to all your equipment from combines to tractors to sprayers.) While time is getting tight, there’s a good chance you can still get your combine in for a comprehensive inspection. There are a number of critical components that you may not be able to see during basic maintenance — threshing elements, augers, feeder house chain, etc. These components are subject to considerable wear and, if you haven’t had them looked at recently, you may have problems during harvest. We can truck in your combine and we’ll return it to you washed and waxed — and with a 90-day warranty on parts and labor. If, despite all your best efforts, you do experience a breakdown during any critical operation, 21st Century Equipment is just a phone call away. Our goal is to dispatch service assistance that same day. We understand the urgency at harvest time — and we’re prepared to respond quickly to get you back in the cab and back in the field. Scott Leth

The John Deere S680; Industry-Leading, But Still Improving Superior Cleaning Shoe • Sieve size increased by 12% - 1.5 acres/hour more productivity. • The longer cleaning shoe reduces tailings volume up to 28% in coarse grains and 14% in small grains. • The new cleaning shoe is 396 lbs lighter enabling smoother operation and reduced ground compaction.

Best In Class Fluid Efficiency • The John Deere Final Tier 4 solution lowers the cost of operation (compared to the competitors) due to lower DEF use rate. The engine speed management system is standard on FT4 S-Series machines equipped with ProDrive, which allows the engine to operate at a lower speed and still maintain optimum ground speed during road transport. The lower engine speed offers up to 10-20% savings in total fluid economy while in transport.

High Performance Technology Integration • Integrated Deere RowSense Guidance • Documentation that can be transmitted wirelessly to your office PC or a third party advisor • Remote Display Access • Interactive Combine Adjust Tool to Optimize Performance

Elevate the ROI of your technology investment.

Nowhere has innovation in agriculture elevated performance to a greater degree than the advent of precision technology. The impact of guidance, variable rate systems, telemetry, soil moisture monitors, RTK and big data have dramatically changed the way growers grow— and their ability to improve yields with fewer inputs. The adoption of this technology has been rapid, but this year’s challenging marketplace has caused many customers to focus less on buying new technology and more on optimizing the technology they already have on board. So let’s talk about ways to make the most of the investment you’ve made. Now that planting is complete, it’s time to transfer your planting data from your in-cab technology into Apex or the new John Deere Operations Center if you didn’t take advantage of wireless data transfer. Planting data is invaluable for many reasons, including its use in field scouting. Another reason it’s critical is to verify your seeding rate against the actual stand as your crop emerges. This helps you assess the performance of your planter as well as that of your chosen variety. This analysis can also help you determine if replanting is necessary. Managing your planting data now helps you correct any errors that occurred while they are still fresh in your mind—a mislabeled variety, for example. It is imperative that your planting data be as clean and accurate as possible. Having good data now means you have the best data at harvest, when you’ll be looking at the report card for your operation and making important management decisions for next year. Now that the crop is in the ground, the next challenge is fertilizing. Given the cool wet spring and the amount of moisture in the soil, fertilizing through the pivot may not be the best choice. That means you might find yourself doing a traditional sidedress application. Variable rate fertility is an innovation that elevates your ability to use the right amount of nutrients in the right place at the right time. Variable rate fertilizer pumps and a GreenstarTM rate controller, used in conjunction with a tool bar or coulter, ensure accurate application of fertilizer prescriptions—something that is not easily done with traditional fertigation. Your local 21st Century Equipment ISG Consultant is always available to assist you. Whether it’s setting up your variable rate fertilizer system or double-checking your planting data, we’re here to make certain you get the most out of your technology investment every day. go fast through the field, but what stood out the most was the quality this planter provided in putting the seed in the ground. It was near perfection. We were planting sugar beets at 98 to 99.5% singulation with near perfect spacing at 6.6 to 7 mph through the field. We ran all of the sugar beets on striptill ground, and I felt that if the conditions were right we could possibly go even faster if we wanted to push it. With corn this planter performed even better, with 99 to 100% singulation running 8 to 10 mph through the field. I was amazed over and over again on how well this planter performed, and now that the crop has started to come up, it’s apparent that this high speed planter will be a huge game changer.”

Leasing E Q U I P M E N T

Elevate your understanding of the true cost of machinery ownership & operation. Just like major corporations, producers face challenges during a tough economic cycle—and cash flow is one of biggest hurdles. Managing the inflow and outflow of cash is tough even in the most profitable operations. At 21st Century Equipment, we’re sympathetic to this challenge and are here to help in any way possible. Over the next few articles, I want to help you fully understand your cash flow. That requires having a good handle on your costs and expenses, which helps you arrive at solid “breakeven” numbers. There are four major cash expenditures in a farming operation, and every direct farm expense can fall under one of these categories: 1) Machinery Costs; 2) Operating Costs; 3) Inputs; and 4) Land Costs. We’ll start with machinery costs by asking this question: What is your true machine cost—and what is the true cost to operate your machine? Machine cost is the annual ownership cost: total payment (principal/interest or lease payments) divided by the number of hours or acres the machine is used. This is a simple calculation of the per hour or per acre basis for that machine. Operating cost is the total repairs, fuel, lubrication and labor cost associated with running that machine on an annual basis, divided by the number of hours or acres of use. Per hour cost is important in understanding machine efficiency. Per acre cost is important later when assessing your cash flow on a bushel per acre basis. You need to know both. When you’re considering a machine upgrade, make sure you are comparing apples to apples. By knowing the machine costs and operating costs, you can look at all of your machines and determine which are the costliest to run and which are most efficient. This helps you make some well-informed management decisions—such as upgrading your machine and switching from a loan to a lease, for example. (This can significantly drop your annual machine cost while increasing your efficiency through lower operating costs.) So here’s today’s challenge: Take the time to figure your annual machine cost on both a per-hour and per-acre basis. Calculate your costs for fuel, lubrication and labor. Estimate the repair dollars required to keep it in the field. Once you get those numbers, pencil in your land costs per acre for both rent and your principle and interest payments. Keep those handy as you’ll need them next time when we discuss operating costs and inputs. Farm equipment is not just machinery; it’s your livelihood. It’s the difference between getting by and getting ahead. Is the machinery you have right for your operation? Are you optimizing the labor savings, technology and efficiency your machinery provides? Do you feel “stuck” in a loan on equipment that isn’t doing its job on your farm? If you have these types of questions, we’re here to help you get answers. It is our job and our passion to get producers into equipment that best fits their operations and their budgets. And we have plenty of tools and options to help you get there. Let us help you elevate your understanding of your true costs and your true cash flow. Knowing this information can help you make the most of your investment in equipment and innovation— and that can lead to bottom line profitability.

21st Century Water Technologies is your Irrigation Specialist ... Making Every Drop Count

www.valleyirrigation.com | www.agsense.net

Now Is The Time For Pre-season Pivot Check.

There’s no question that you’ll soon be firing up your pivot system—and now is the time to get your irrigation technology ready to keep your crop watered. When you first put water in your pivot, blow out your pivot system and flush it to check for leaks. Pull off the end cap and sand trap to allow any debris or material to exit the system. Check and clean all water filters for those using ditch water. Make sure gear boxes have adequate oil

and grease all pivot points to avoid freeze-ups during operation. If you’re using variable frequency drive (VFD) technology, ensure that the fans that cool the system are operating properly and the air filters are clean. Check all electrical connections to see if there is any rodent damage or corrosion. Now is also the time to check the condition of your tires. Make sure they are properly inflated and replace any tires that look like they are approaching the end of their service life. There is nothing worse that slogging out into the middle of a soggy cornfield in the hot, humid summer to change a tire. If you don’t have time—or if you just want some extra assurance—give us a call and we’ll handle the Jeremy Becker 21st Century Water Technologies entire pre-season inspection Sales and Business and maintenance for you.

We’ve written a great deal about the advantages of remote telemetry, which gives you the ability to check the status of your pivots on your tablet or smartphone. If you are using telemetry, make sure your subscription is up to date and paid. If you’ve been thinking about adding this time-saving, labor-saving technology to your operation, now is the time to do it. This innovation elevates your ability to monitor every pivot—and be notified immediately if something goes awry. Give us a call and we will walk you through the process of setting up remote telemetry on your operation. Do you have time to get all this pre-irrigation work done? Well, there is no such thing as “too late” until it’s time to irrigate. But the sooner the better so you have enough time to fix what needs fixing and head into irrigation season with a greater level of confidence.
