Welcome to issue six of 20x20 magazine, a square platform for writings, visuals and cross-bred projects. The works in this issue have been assembled around the meta-words THE FARE TO GET THERE, to which the artists and authors have responded in very different ways. The aim is to bring together interesting contributions and create a collection of pieces with no expiry date. Demonstration Chant I love you when there is no noise, when the roof on top of us doesn’t matter, when we don’t need stars that haven’t shone in thirteen days, to taste the beauty of the sky. You look so beautiful now that you’re no longer in pain. The veins in your face have settled down and the ash of bombs no longer bothers you. Your toes and legs no longer itch for air, and your frown has let itself go. I love you when I’m no longer scared of you dying, when I no longer have to get close to you at night to make sure you are still breathing, when I know the fight, I never wanted to fight, is over. Outside the dead are on the streets and I’m concerned with nothing but shrouding you with the whitest sheet. Like kings of old Egypt you deserve nothing short of a wrapping ceremony. I want to wash every ounce of your skin with lavender and warm your eyes and fingers with hot oil. Outside a baby is dying under his mother who is dying under the bed holding debris and the weight of poor construction (we blame everything on the occupation). I don’t want their shouting to disrupt your cold slumber.

You loved me because we hated the same things, slimy okra (that looks and tastes the same), the smell of red meat being cooked, and people who can’t make up their mind. I loved you because you swung your eyes open like a child surprised with laughter. I sleep next to your dead body with the smell of trash that was burned next to the right side of your face, the charcoal of our bedding. I play with your hand, open and close fingers then hold on, we are in this together.

Tala Abu Rahmeh is a young writer based in Palestine, she graduated from the American University in 2009 with an MFA in Poetry. Her work has been published by several magazines and anthologies, the first of which was 25 Under 25, edited by Naomi Shihab Nye for Harper Collins. www.thespacepastsurvival.tumblr.com
20 years of graphic design has given Scott Bain different eyes through which to see the world. With a dark fascination with dead stuff and dusty Victorian taxidermy, cabinets of curiosities are Scott’s main influence, antique collections of bizarre artefacts, rarely seen. He has taken this concept and brought it into modern scenarios. www.micromachina.com
Alan Britt’s recent books are Greatest Hits (2010) and Vegetable Love (2009), he currently teaches English/Creative Writing at Towson University. Alan lives in Reisterstown, Maryland with his wife, daughter, two Bouviers des Flandres, one Bichon Frise and two formerly feral cats.
Christopher Clack was born and lives in South London. He trained as a painter at Camberwell School of Art and Royal College of Art. He has also worked in print and sculptural media. Since 2003 Christopher has produced all his work digitally. He believes that art is now the closest thing we have to religion: art reveals the fundamental processes of religion and religion should be thought of as something like a work of art. www.christopherclack.co.uk
Not quite sure where he’s from anymore, Matthew C. Crawford seems to be living out an Asian version of Thomas Wolfe’s You Can’t Go Home Again. His short fiction, travel writing, and photography have appeared, or will appear soon, in publications such as Inscape, The Journal of Truth and Consequence, Vulcan, Paper Darts, TravelMag, and Hackwriters.
Claire Curtis graduated in 2009 with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art Photography from the University of Gloucestershire. She lives and works in Birmingham. She is influenced both by the intimacy of classical renaissance portraiture and the vibrance of the modern world. Curtis’ portraits deftly balance truth and fiction - the subjects posturing if often choreographed and directed by her, but sometimes entirely spontaneous. www.clairecurtis.co.uk
William Goldsmith was born in Athens in 1986. He is the author of Vignettes of Ystov, a graphic novel published by Jonathan Cape and Random House (2011). He graduated from The Glasgow School of Art in 2009, where he studied Illustration. His work has been exhibited at D&AD New Blood, Museum Of London Docklands, London Print Studio, Glasgow Art Fair, and most 20x20 magazine | page 30
recently in Somerset House’s Pick Me Up. His short graphic story Like A Wagon was Highly Commended in the Observer/ Comica competition, and his illustrations have appeared in publications such as The Drawbridge, Varoom Magazine, Art Review, and Anorak. Roy Harris was born in Harold Wood , Essex in 1976. He lives and works in London. He does not have photoshop and is a naturally messy worker.
Julius Kalamarz received his MFA from Columbia University. His work has appeared in Opium Magazine, Jucked, The Los Angeles Review, Counterexample Poetics, and Ninth Letter. Avenir - an art/poetry project based on the work of Yves Klein - is forthcoming from Zimzalla Avant Objects.
Caroline Kha studied Fine Arts at the National Art School in Sydney before moving to London and being awarded a residency at the Florence Trust (2010). Her work has been displayed in Australia, Japan and and most recently at dalla Rosa Gallery (December 2010). www.carolinekha.com
Matei Muntiu was born in 1981 in Timisoara (Romania), in 1996 he started experimenting with black and white film. Matei is now working on an animation project. www.mateimuntiu.ro
Stephanie Sears is a freelance writer of wildlife, environmental issues, equine subjects, living in Verona, Italy. She has published poetry in a number of European and American reviews such as Poetry Salzburg, Inclement, The California Quarterly, RiverSedge, Haggard & Halloo, Word Catalyst, The Coe.
