The Magic City Classic The annual meeting between Alabama State University and ONEA&M TEAM Alabama University, the Magic City Classic has become ONE DREAM one of the longest continuous football rivalries in the nation. ALABAMA STATE FOOTBALL Begun in 1940 at Legion Field in Birmingham, this historic game has since been played every year except 1943 and 1944. For one exciting weekend each autumn, the Magic City Classic engulfs Legion Field in a sea of black and gold, and maroon and white. The first Classic drew nearly 2,000 fans. Since then, the Magic City Classic has continued to grow. In 2008, a crowd of 69,113 came to Legion Field to witness the battle between the Hornets and the Bulldogs.

The Magic City Classic provides a week of excitement to loyal fans of both Alabama State and Alabama A&M. The success of this rivalry is easy to explain. The Classic is a celebration of black college tradition that spills over into every aspect of the event – from the spirited competition, intense football action and fiercely loyal fans, to the pep rallies, reunions and parades. It is a meeting with all the ingredients of a successful rivalry. The Classic is an event truly representative of Birmingham’s rich legacy. The economic, civic, spiritual and cultural benefits of the game are almost boundless, enhanced by the convergence of alumni and supporters of both schools, coming from all across the nation to celebrate the unique experience that is the Magic City Classic.
